I think we will see a lot less competition in the upcoming Jebro tourney because of it. And that is a shame, both for the players and the fate of the pvp scene.

By a lot less competition he means no competition.

Now that this patch hit the only teams playing in the NA region will be abjured and a collection of players who likely were asking for tips on how to hit platinum last season. It will not be a spectator event.

Everyone who took part in this balance patch at Arena Net is so incredibly disconnected from even remotely competitive PvP that it’s comical. It’s not even worth posting any perspective or analysis of the patch because the patch alone is evidence that everyone part of the balance team is a brain dead slug not even capable of absorbing that information.

Revert this patch or burn your paychecks balance team. you didn’t do anything but ruin.

there’s so many words that can be put here to explain why ranked is terrible right now but it’s not even worth writing because THERE IS NO WAY that people are even remotely unaware of how bad it is. This is the LOWEST of the low as far as match quality has ever been EVER in guild wars 2 solo queue or recent duo implementation history.

I KNOW that nobody is going to respond to this and god knows if it will even be read. If this was like 2 years ago I would put a lot of work into this post and identify all the problems individually and suggest possible solutions. THAT TIME IS GONE. So I rage type this because whatever.

This doesn’t make sense thematically.

In a similar vain though, I like the idea of dual wielding two-handed weapons as a new specialization for melee classes such as warrior, guardian, or ranger. Possibly at the expense of losing your other weapon set. This would be especially interesting on Warrior since it would allow them to spec out of discipline in the next expansion allowing for some neat combinations. I know the chances of this happening are essentially nil but I would like to state that I think it would be nifty.

If you want a competitive solo arena:

1) Remove duo q option. Solo only for less segregation and more accurate ladder placement

2) In game voice. This game is kitten without a proper communication. Also players in the high end will just join channel in ts together the second they get teamed which gives greater advantage to said team (which is usually already stacked). Having in game voice will level the playing field significantly and allow for a higher level of coordinated play.

3) Put in barrier to entry rating on matches. I haven’t been on in awhile but it was the case WAY too often that severely under qualified individuals would randomly show up in matches. Doesn’t matter if the average rating per team is close, these people simply ruin match quality independently.

As far as match manipulation goes in THEORY if a player is consistently throwing games their rating will just drop into oblivion and they will cease to show up in your matches. As of now I don’t understand exactly why this wouldn’t happen.

Lets say that X player is having Y player throw every game he gets on enemy team, and for simplicity let’s say that this is a perfect world and X player wins 100% of his matches while Y player wins 50% (since he had to throw the 50% of the time he was on enemy team). It would seem that these two individuals rating would diverge rather quickly, therefore ruining their system after some brief trolling at the expense of Y players rating being in the gutter.

This could possibly be nullified by player Y farming rating again in an attempt to get back into player x’s game to throw again, farm again, rinse and repeat. However, if what you’re experiencing is genuine and consistent match manipulation, I would be inclined to believe that matchmaking is simply garbage (Or they’re mega rich and paying other players off repeatedly ala the snuffles legacy). This could probably be attributed to the serious scarcity of a competitive player base.

In the mean time don’t take this KITTEN so seriously. You (the players) are the only people who give this system any worth. The amount of drama I’ve heard about the new ranked queue since it’s release is comical. There is no consequence to an inaccurate skill rating other than vain labor on anets part, and if everyone is aware of the systems flaws at the end of the day it means nothing.

Wait for 5v5 and then kitten at eachother.

Now everyone quit crying.

This matters ALOT! I am personally disgusted and outraged with this players down right egregious and flippant behavior in respect to the misuse and abuse of this highly competitive system. I personally DEMAND that this gentleman be reprimanded for his actions so that we can all start taking ranked queue seriously again.

Necro is in a good spot balance wise. Some people don’t like the idea of necro being a nuke class that requires support, but it fills an interesting niche. Necro can be incredibly challenging to deal with when it is combined with a support. It is a monster in even fights with ele and when spite necro outnumbers fights it is almost impossible to stall the node.

Necros weaknesses are being vulnerable to outnumbers/power bursts (with moa especially) but i feel like this is mostly fair. If necro proves to be too weak in competitive i feel like it would be better to tone down the classes that are best at pressuring/ccing necro into a position where it’s difficult for them to get their damage off without positioning mistakes (thief, mesmer, guardian, rev).

Skyhammer Jump Pad Cooldown

You need to add an internal cooldown to the jump pads on skyhammer. Right now it’s way too rewarding for classes like necromancer and guardian to jump pad, hop down, and jump pad again over and over again to avoid being melee’d. A cooldown of 10 to 15 seconds would be appropriate. If you are unable to complete this in a reasonable amount of time the map should be removed from the ranked rotation.

Seeing damage reduction on surge makes sense given it’s unavoidable nature. But making a drastic change like 50% and 33% on precision strike given how much of the sword kit IS precision strike is haphazard to say the least, given the fact that no other classes are being modified nearly as aggressively.

As stated numerous times rev has been dominating power roaming builds in all mid-high-top tier level play. It doesn’t take long for players to learn energy management and excel against all other potential power roaming specs (thief, mesmer, warrior) that others has practiced for years. Let’s face it, power rev was always the de facto go to build when you need mobility and direct damage. Why do you think all other classes’ meta is either bunker, bruiser or condi build for an entire year? Thief? Please, most thieves still disengage whenever the fight starts and you don’t really see them in top tier due to how easily good rev can kill them. Dragonhunters? Just play it in mid tier and you’ll see how helpless it can be after DH burn initial CDs.

At the high end it’s already been theorized that thief in combination with mesmer would be the optimal comp (hence 55 dragons picking up sindrener, but im like 99% positive you ddin’t know about that among other things). Rev beating thief? It’s actually well understood that thief dominates the rev in that matchup. You making that statement actually invalidates the rest of what you wrote given the fact you don’t even have basic matchup and role understanding.

Don’t come on the forums and pretend you know anything when you clearly don’t.

What are you trying to accomplish? Are you trying to actually ‘balance’ the game? “Shaking things up” is a discouraging term to hear from a balance team.

Dear lord, you’re so melodramatic.. revenant damage is still going to be the highest consistant power dps.

SotM needed a nerf. A med/low CD with 1s evade, and chain CD, and you wanted it to keep doing up to upwards of 15k damage, with all that utility??

And sword #2, a spammable nuke that can easily do 8k+ damage… Come on, how could you possibly post here (and everywhere else on the forums) expecting people to take you seriously?

If you really practice the class as much as you claim, you will find a way to be effective with the changes.

This update featured very directed changes with PvP specifically being the target, to herald in the new season and shake things up a bit. It’s not a full balance update and not all professions are being covered at this time.
Does this update substitute for a full balance update? No. We’ll still be doing game-wide balance updates in the future, in which case you’ll probably see a full spectrum of changes.

Since season 2 things have been going pretty good. Gentle nerfs to overtuned classes and buffs to guardian/warrior/thief to bring them into viability. However, the last 2 patches you have completely kitten the bed. Nerfing the living hell out of druid condi clear/sustain and now completely axing revenant damage WITHOUT EVEN SEEING what the metagame is since the last lan.

Not to mention you announced season 5 yet THERE IS STILL NO TEAMS because you guys REFUSE to mention anything about the competitive scene/lans/cash prizing for god knows what reason. And even if there was a confirmed event people have no idea what comps to practice because you randomly just delete classes/builds from the meta game. Why hasn’t mesmer been touched as much as druid/rev>!?!?!? Honestly wtf.

It’s moves like this that make people lose faith in this game. shoutouts to everyone who put time and effort into this game to be let down. Shout outs to all the people rolling the dice trying to figure out what class to practice.

There absolutely needs to be a competitive scene outside of ESL on this game (the status of which is currently questionable, anyway.) Otherwise, ESL just stagnates, and everyone just stops giving a kitten .

This last couple months, I literally watched several new teams form and start scrimming regularly and entering AG just because of ToL – it really doesn’t take that much to invigorate the pvp community, we just need something to work towards. With AG ending and a ranked season incoming where teams literally won’t even be allowed to queue together ranked, it’s not looking great.

Time to step up Anet, pvp isn’t fueled by a handful of teams getting a big payout, it’s driven by competition your players can actually participate in.

This. ^^^ I would add that there needs to be something PvE players can reasonably participate in.

With the stacked matches of s2 and s3, PvE players should have been in favored matches at least some of the time if there MMR was set high enough coming in.

I don’t know why that didn’t work out. I suspect it was at least partly experienced players farming on free accounts. Another big factor, imo, was teams on voice.

Yeah solo queue needs to be fixed with Season 5.

Season 2 was basically just get your MMR high enough and then win every game for the rest of the season. Season 3 was reasonably close to 50/50 matchmaking but basically came down to who had the most kittened players. If you want to understand the feeling imagine going into unranked and being able to consistently 1v2 the enemy team but still losing. Not fun….

The skill gap in queues is actually WAY OUT OF HAND! So out of hand that it’s a problem that should have been fixed in a matter of a couple of weeks, not ignore for months.

However, I’m confident arena net is aware of the problems with the previous seasons and I ask that you keep this thread on topic. We already know what needs to happen in season 5, we just need to know when it’s coming.

Why is DH not competitive at esl level?

m00’bs perspective on the topic:

The main issue with guard at top level is that it can’t kill bunkers (druid engi ele retri rev). A rule of thumb for guard is the longer the fight takes the worse it is for the guard. This forces the guard to take a matchup that is fighting a dps (invo rev mes necro thief) in order to have any good targets. Taking the current meta comp from worlds (ele rev mes druid necro), if guard + support was vs ele + anything but mes, it’s a bad matchup. That’s because ele can force fights to last too long that makes guard use its cds and is not able to kill anything quick enough. The only way to counter this is by putting the guard with another high dps class that can mostly take care of itself, aka invo rev. What that allows is the guard to provide basic support, CC, and damage while the rev goes ham vs anything. Fights are always short with another high DPS basically making it a good matchup. The problem with this is it forces either 1) both sustain to be together or 2) other fights don’t have enough damage to kill anything resulting in either stalemates or eventually losses. 90% of the time in high tier pvp you don’t want the two sustain together. It’s especially bad in the current meta since you can’t force 3 node games due to portals. Furthermore if you were going to group the invo rev and DH together it forces your team to basically RELY on that matchup to be won. We did this during worlds and we won our initial matchups until Denial decided to just let ROM run away from our 2v1 and not equalize with rotations. So basically when ROM saw rev+DH he just kited until one of them left, because the guard doesn’t have enough pressure to quickly kill something off node (or ever tbh). Since that was neutralized the only other way to use guard was to teamfight it with invo rev, support and necro or mes. Our comp had a thief for stupid reasons so we couldn’t test that, but I assume that it would actually work.

TBH the reason you don’t see guard in ESL games is because players don’t know how to properly manage cds throughout the dozens of situations that you might face in PVP. I do think its viable but nobody knows that because I’m on a not-so-good team with a not-so-good comp. Maybe one day I’ll convince people its worth running but we’ll see.

Like if you would have told me these guys were ruby 2 seasons ago i would laugh in your face because it’s so pitiful. What happened to the matchmaking to allow such inexperienced players into legend? These are not even outliers, you could take a random sample of legend players and hotjoiners and there would be almost no difference.

This is the worst season yet. The matches seem to be closer but the queue times in the NA region for high legend are consistently over an hour. Also the level of play in Diamond/Low Legend is INSANELY LOW. Like WAYYY lower than it should ever be in an even remotely competitive system.

Most of my friends go to alt accounts just so they can actually play the game, some even have more than 1 alt because they get to legend then the game is unplayable again.

If i were anet i would fix legend queues ASAP this is a huge problem and this season is a joke to majority of the player base.

I don’t think you understand. Pip ranges within a given division are a factor this season when queuing. What I am requesting is that they change matchmaking ONLY within legendary to completely ignore pip ranges and create a match with any legend players and just try to balance the MMR on each team to be as close as possible (which is already how it works, just ignore pip ranges)

Shield is by far the best offhand weapon warrior has right now. I would say leave shield as is and change the functionality of offhand axe, sword, and mace (which are all terrible).

Queue Times

I don’t want to beat a dead horse but we’re a good few weeks into the season now and the queue times are still absolutely ludicrous. Consistently 30+ minutes even on prime time despite many many people reaching legend. I don’t remember this being as much of a problem in season 2.

Balance is awful. Build diversity is awful. Ridiculous changes patch to patch completely removing builds and or classes from the meta. Condition builds still being brain dead and far too rewarding; this is on top of double dipping for offensive or defensive stats vs. power based specs.

You can pretty much roll any class right now other than possibly ele and be incredibly effective. Worst case scenario 7 out of 8 proffs are viable at the highest tier which is not bad at all. Especially when you look at a game like Overwatch, which taking the esports scene by storm, only seeing about 12 out of its 22 professions being regularly picked at the high end of play (~54%). Balance is in a pretty good place in my opinion.

I do like the game, this post was made because i fail to see the reason why the game
refuses to grow despite having a generous prize pool and an easily accessible scene. Talented gamers can pick this game up and likely be playing at the pro league level within a few months given the appropriate circumstances. Conquest is a challenging and engaging game mode when playing 5v5 with comms. Yet here we are.

What is going wrong?

Enjoying Capricorn, fast queue pops, queuing outside mists, and faster pace killing in casual play. Compared to last patch, the casual game is 200% more fun even without a ranked season.

If you wanna be negative, yeah, MMOs are dying from the minute they’ve launched but the timing on this post is weird

Talking mostly about the competitive scene. I’ve spent an awful lot of time on twitch lately and the there seems to be a serious lack viewers and quality content creators compared to even a few months ago. Not to mention the scene in general is the same ~30 people it’s been for months.
