Well as you probably know, thief does not have any party healing skills, actually scratch that shadow refuge heals a little bit but nothing truly noteworthy.
So how does a thief heal then? Place a ranger or 2 with a thief who has shortbow and you have a amazing source of heals. Ranger puts down their regen field (not sure what it’s called I never played ranger) and a thief spamming cluster bombs on it can heal 8-12k hp(about 1.5k hp per cluster bomb as a area heal, so anyone close to the field gets healed) in about 5-7 seconds. Tack on some initiative regen traits and utilities and he can heal even more. Those numbers were observed by me as a thief who doesn’t use any healing attributes, either a zerk or a cond build doing this.
So in short a thief alone is a bad healer, but a thief who knows how to capitalize shortbows potential with a ranger is a awesome healer.
No, that’ on the party. Not me.
How many times did everyone try to suicide through? Did you change your skills to help you get passed or just keep your normal ones on? Did nobody think " if we keep dying running why don’t we kill them?" or “Yo sneaky kitten thief who got passed, cmere and stealth all of us in 1 magical click so we can run through”
Anywho, hopefully you got some ideas now for next time you try.
AC really isn’t that hard.. I’ve done p2 a couple times with guild and that’s it, but the other day I joined a random pug group for p1 compiled of the less wanted classes generally(thief necro ranger), we beat p1 easily, then p2, then p3. No Skype interaction, no knowledge about the pugs playstyles etc etc etc… I’d guesstimate it took us 1.5-2 hours for all 3 paths. Which I would say is a decent time, I’ve spent longer having a tough time in arah path X and cof path 3 before.
This dungeon doesn’t need to be nerfed it’s fine and fun.
A lol moment for me was when you said : " I shouldn’t need to worry about running from the Waypoint to the Howler King without dying. I never worried about that before." Answer to your problem : kill the adds. No one has any right to complain about dying from a waypoint to anywhere because they didn’t take the time to kill the adds, that’s all on you.
I wonder who ever came up with the idea to let the thief be able to avoid damage while stealthed makes no sense to me, why not make it so they cant dodge or evade ground target AoE’s like marks and stuff atm thiefs are always hidden and high dps tbh they dont even need armor lol
Is this a joke?
The thief takes ALL damage while stealthed.
Not from mobs or non aoe attacks. This is the only game that allows stealthers to be able to stealth during combat. It’s a bad mechanic.
That is because it stops aggro… So any single target dps will not hurt the thief as he does not have aggro. Just like a necro using fear, not fair he can not get hurt while they run away? But wait, they come back and attack him right? Same for thief now… Or a Mesmer using clones to migrate the aggro. Or a guardian pushing all the mobs away from him? Or or or… I think you get the point. Take away stealth if you must but all those other class mechanics go with it
Just because I can, you’re 100% wrong this is the only game with a stealth mechanic for combat, I know of a game where stealth reigns over everything and its 100% perma because the devs in that game are kitten.
Tried doing the acolytes part in cof p1… Oh boy is this change rough.
Kill 2 acolytes have 2-6 mobs aggro on you, stealth and run far away to safety and when I say far I mean roughly 2x or more of aggro distance minimum, unstealth and bam all those mobs come running at you instantly. Have to use every stealth skill just for 1 round of acolytes to keep aggro off. This effects glass builds pretty hard regardless of how good you are.
kitten adapting this is just stupid… Mobs regening because of stealth was never a issue unless you’re dumb and expect a monster to stay at 10% health while you hide for 30 seconds. It made sense the way they regened before.
But I guess common sense ain’t so common anymore.
/end rant
I’m not here to change your mind or debate with you. I’m here to show others how to best farm path 1 of CoF.
The information is out there, you can do the research if you’d like to but really I don’t care if you believe me or continue to think that D/D matches pistol whip spam.
I have a fairly open mind, is there something so wrong about defending the main point of your post? What’s the point of claiming “X is the best” if you can’t explain why you feel “X is better then Y”. Although I disagree with sword being the best dps it would be nice to hear some points as to WHY it is besides “it just is”. I did my own research and came to the conclusion after seeing the numbers d/d was far better for single target dps. Sorry for “stepping on your toes” I was just hoping for a little elaboration since you clearly say sword is superior and took the time to make a 2 page post based on it, because I simply don’t see it…Maybe I’m wrong. Don’t worry about it bro, the internets was made for claiming things you don’t need to back up.
@wasabi
I would continue to throw out points about pistol whip vs d/d, but you made such a great rebuttal there’s literally nothing more I can say.
You must be 100% right and changed my mind forever.
/end sarcasm.
The only problem I have with this build is that d/d is superior to damage then sword is so if you were to come up with some kind of “exceed warrior dps” for p1 build sword wouldn’t be it. I bought a sword to try and get into the headspace of all the thieves I heard saying sword has the best dps, but truth is, after about 10+ attempts on controller for p1 I could never do it as fast as when I used d/d(I used this as my benchmark because it’s strictly solo so it’s easy to compare the two speeds). Even threw in assassins signet with sword which I never use with d/d and couldn’t do it in the same time. Sword is great for it’s aoe damage but in p1 the only time that is taken into account is in the first part with the two turrets, the rest is pure single target dps so you can’t truly capitalize on the swords dps since the goal of p1 is single target dps. It’s my opinion the high base damage on sword leads people to believe it does more dps but the speed d/d hits is more dps in the long run against a single target. God kitten I said dps too much.
My disagreeing aside great post wasabi, thief can definitely match warriors dps, it just takes more skill than the average thief has to survive having 10-13k hp in p1.
Spread the word, let the world know
Yeah, you’re right. This build sucks. I’m drunk.
Nothing like creating a build intoxicated…
Running a glass thief I still like deathblossom, it might not be as useful as with a condition build but I like using it in a crowd to damage multiple people at once (guess you could say the only d/d aoe). Use it to jump out of a enemy combo field that was thrown on me, with this skill you can both evade the effects of the field and get out of it all with 1 skill positioned properly. A good emergency evade, it’s amusing to spam deathblossom in a crowd and see “evade” pop up countless times during the animation knowing all those evades would have probably killed me.
As for dancing dagger… This skill frustrates me a lot because I tend to accidently press 4 and go “kitten stop wasting initiative”. Only use is if someone is running away on the verge or death. It has it’s use but more situational then all the other skills imo. A cripple is nice to have but I barely ever need it to begin with.
“oh what’s that, you need to use death blossom to AoE bleed your enemies? i’m sorry, the battles take place on tiny bridges, so either you risk falling off and spending the entire battle dead on the bottom of the pit, or you ignore your condition spec and spend the battle spamming backstab”
a lot of areas in the game hate death blossom (and its completely unsafe leap over enemies) already, but at least i could respawn. no such thing in dungeons, and having so many battles and events focusing on tiny bridges make it kind of annoying for thieves.
Sounds like you don’t know how death blossom works. I can death blossom over and over in a cof brazier without kicking the controller dude or death blossom on any bridge/cliff without falling off, it’s called l2p and position yourself.
Also don’t say they hate d/d thieves, not every thief who runs d/d is a condition build who spams death blossom over and over (which isn’t the build you should bring to "speed runs / speed farming groups)normal runs sure.
I run d/d glass cannon and do a ton of dmg with backstab every 5 seconds and a fast regular attack, death blossom I only use if my endurance runs out during the last boss which helps me evade without needing endurance.
Cof hates you, not D/D thieves, please don’t lump me in with you.
The way I see it, and I see this for many dungeons not just fotm. A lot of thieves go glass cannon builds for high dps while they still don’t know how to dodge / predict the enemies.
That being said same thing could go for any class, but thieves generally have a lot lower stock survivability stats ( yes I said stats not skills/utilities) which makes them die uber fast with not a lot of forgiveness for errors.
Thieves are very valuable if the thief knows his class and how to help. Sadly many don’t.
Fuinir is spot on Undeadkemea.
Unless every single person in your party decides “hey the thief stealthed us, let’s stop attacking and let the boss reset like a buncha idiots” a boss will never reset due to stealth mechanics.
I use both those skills over and over on bosses, SR is great because everyone gets a short period of health regen for every hit.
If the boss you are fighting resets because you used this skill your teammates are not paying attention properly. I’ve never had a boss reset mid fight due to these skills.
If it continues to be a problem I suggest backstabbing right away after you stealth that way the boss will never regen as aggro is continued…
This game was made by a company in America, not Nigeria, not Rome.
Boohoo this word is in landmarks around the world… so is kitten island and kittening Austria and kitten, but as you can see those are blocked, I wonder why?
Not sure why I even replied and continue to reply, I guess I find someone grasping at straws out of frustration for this particular situation amusing…
Google ReeferKeeper and you’ll see nothing but products for aquariums. But I accepted what the name relates to and changed my name without being a baby aboot it when they said I can’t use it anymore after it was used for a month +.
Ignorance isn’t bliss.
Niger does breach the rules, you yourself said it “might hint toward or resemble a racial slur”. The latin word for dark/black object is precisely what started the racial slurs and you could say was the first racial slur used before it was changed.
I had a name ReeferKeeper which I was banned and forced to change, sure it might resemble a street term for a certain drug but in the end the ReeferKeeper is something used to keep my aquarium in check or where I keep all my reef records! hahaha….
Just come up with a new name you won’t win this battle of hidden meanings especially the way yours is tied to a racial slur.
@Sylvers your right it’s not so much a bad thing, just cramped my style on controller for cof and making it take longer, and usually that’s one of the only reasons a thief gets into a “farming” party lol.
if this is the only reason for a thief in the farming party, why dont they just ask for 1 human with hounds? no need thief then
Please re-read what I said and don’t take it out of context… ONE of the only reasons… not the only reason. There is other reasons a thief is valuable.
Hounds are not a good replacement for TG on controller. But as for asking for 1 human class for hounds I assume you have no idea how fast a thief can down controller, most classes can’t compare to the speed. Placing hounds on a random class and deeming it as fast as a thief is just silly.
So tested the swinging at your target away from them (having them targeted of course), thieves don’t attack unless you make physical contact with your target one way or another.
Lose a little initiative but CnD start works well to lose the aggro.
@Sylvers your right it’s not so much a bad thing, just cramped my style on controller for cof and making it take longer, and usually that’s one of the only reasons a thief gets into a “farming” party lol.
Probably helps a lot outside cof when you actually want them to follow you instead of wondering off attacking a useless monster instead of your intended target.
I didn’t even think of the necro AI, you’re probably right in they share the same kind of AI as minions/pets.
Cheers for the tips! I’ll give them a shot once I get on.
Elite Skill : Thief Guild : No more auto-attacks.
I noticed this doing my regular cof runs on the control. Usually popped TG stealthed us and ran in without a worry for flamethrower because the thieves would aggro him for me and pull him half out of the room. But now the thieves run right past him, past me (they follow you very attentively now), leaving me with the aggro. They don’t attack anything now unless you hit it. Maybe this is as the skill was intended but I did enjoy the way it was before patch.
Time for new tactics on control.
This isn’t a QQ or rage thread, Even if I think its bullkitten :P. Just pointing out a change they didn’t put in the notes… Which I believe should have been.
So don’t expect your thieves to take aggro for you on their own will anymore!
Weak sauce… I was a happy Guild Wars 2 player thinking “yay I didn’t finish my monthly yet”… Now I can go back to being a sad Guild Wars 2 player
Bumped so people know!
Thieves have a trait which gets rid of 1 condition when you stealth and every 3 seconds in stealth.
“Shadow Arts IV – Remove 1 condition for every 3 seconds of stealth.”
Because of this trait your idea won’t work.
I rarely talk kitten about anet but… After I spent a buncha gold on exotics to change through mystic forge solely for keys and a few salvage kits, just to find the kitten is disabled afterwards AND now this guy saying keys being taken out… She was disabled but the recipe wasn’t? That’s bull kitten good kitten job anet.
At least give me enough time to get some lube next time anet. sigh…
Curious on what you all think is a more valuable dpser in a speed run party. Lately I’ve been seeing many lfg adds only asking for strictly warrior dps builds, even if its a party of 3 warriors 1 Mesmer, or 1 person starting a party who isn’t a warrior(Always a good laugh that one). I got pure dps thief and get rejected a few times because I am not a warrior. Or seen people join my party to get vote kicked over n over until a warrior shows up.
(Same for Mesmer but that much is understandable if your party doesn’t already have one lol)
Personally I would take thief over a warrior simply because I find thief brings more to the table then a warrior in versatility/dps. But keep in mind I also have a biased opinion and don’t know warriors in and out like thief because I never liked playing warrior so I have not leveled one and played it XXX hours like my thief. I’ve only seen warriors doing great dps (Which I don’t find anymore damaging then my thieves dmg) or run a banner/shout build for nice buffs. Only say cof because it’s the dungeon I do most often, can’t speak for other dungeon speed runners but perhaps it’s the same?
So that’s why I’m asking…
Are warriors just that good at dpsing and I don’t see it?
What do warriors bring to the table, what makes them shine so bright?
What do you think the best dpser for speed runs are?
In that case, I see that more as an “art-form” than anything. That’s like those crazy people who practice the art of Parkour running. Sure you get from A to B a little faster than the average jogger, but I think it’s more of a flashy way to get around, and usually pretty risky if you’re not careful at what you’re doing.
“Parkour” has had influence on military dating back to pre-ww1. It is the basis of many training courses as well. Just thought I’d throw that out there since you said they are crazy people and it’s mostly flash. At least you called it art Cheers!
ON TOPIC- It is pretty funny how long it takes to get a group who is willing to kill everything. But when you do it’s well worth it, personally I hate skipping monsters in fotm because I have gotten so many great drops from trash mobs and so much trash from bosses most of the time I’d rather just kill the trash mobs. Dredge map for example, everyone wants to run away and let them despawn. I want to kill them all and get as many miner bags I can, uhh… LODESTONES anyone?! Yeah that’s right, it’s rare but you can get lodestones from those bags and I have a few times!! Fotm is different from any other dungeon I’ve run (I haven’t done them all) in the sense the trash mobs are actually worth killing and drop consistently decent drops. 90% of the exotics I’ve ever dropped in a dungeon came from fotm trash mobs, not bosses, but mobs like harpys and dredge miners.
Would be nice if more people wanted to kill everything, yeah I understand not everyone has a whole extra “5 or 10” minutes to tack on their busy life to kill the extra mobs in a map, but it’s worth it. I’ve only been doin “kill everything” runs because I need to restack up on vials and goo to upgrade rings. These kinds of runs take 30min longer to get together then a normal one but I cant stand seeing potential vial drops left in the dust during a run because the group doesn’t want to kill anything but maw. And like someone else said, if you decide to stay back and kill stuff, or take a stand and say hey lets kill these. You’re likely to get booted and say goodbye to whatever you contributed so far(time and or effort). Makes sense from their pov if you hold the group back, but it sucks.
p.s merry mother kittening christmas everyone
Am I the only one who noticed downstate 2# does not always work? I’m talking strictly pvp, I try to time my 2# skills when I’m down according to the person stomping me, by that I mean timing it to go off last second before I get stomped. But when I do this I’ve seen the skill be used, and not interrupt the person stomping me. (And no the times I’m talking about do not involve some kind of “invuln” or stability skill I watch closely to the buffs). It seems to only happen when they are high mid air, which makes me use my skill earlier then I would like to due to thinking it’ll fail if I don’t. It does not happen everytime but enough to make me irritated.
I’m pretty fine for the whole pulling towards me deal, it’s funny doing it to someone currently using his burst set up. The simple fact it stops 1 person from stomping is “alright” with me. But when you compare this to the other class downstates its very under powered in usefulness for group situations or losing aggro against a monster in pve.
Would love to see perhaps a triple shot pull instead of a single, that would be great. (although I am certainly not thinking about pve lmao) so that’ll never happen :P
Take a look at this build : https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/engineer/The-TANKCAT-build-Prybar-some-faces/page/3#post949380
I recently started using this build after experimenting alot with engi, It’s 100% awesomeness. Once you get used to switching between the kit and using your shield you will be kicking alot of kitten The build itself doesn’t have the “best” power output but the sheer survivability makes it easy enough to kill people non stop.
This build also makes BS thieves a cakewalk imo.
Thank you tankcat! I love spvp and before watching your vid awhile back I was trying every condition based, rifle based, crit based build I could think of. I put my own flavor on this build (just a few dif traits/runes[spvp free runes rock]) and it kicks kitten hardcore. Nothing like watching a thief press 22222 just to find out you put your block up and his initiative was wasted for nothing, RETREAT! I’m generally always in the top 5 of the list with this build. I just wish the confuse damage was the same as in wvw :P but that would be too OP of course with this build! haha
I’ve also gotten into a habit of shouting “Tiny dunk!” every odd time I elixer stomp someone…. It’s just great
I can almost see the haters… “Stupid tiny dunk engis!!!”
Still trying to get a “Giant dunk!” in but it’s very hard
Cheers bud!
(edited by ReeferKeeper.1865)
Spvp? Pve? WvW?
What kind of builds are you looking for bud.
Would not bother me at all, in spvp. My current build has nothing to do with stealth surprisingly lol.
But in pve…. It would kitten me over big time. No more condition removal(my main source for removing conditions), bonus hp regen, helping someone downed lose aggro before they die fully, and worst of all no quick burst 5 bleed stacking pistol shots
And no more harvesting with 10 monsters around me while I laugh at them as I mine a rich ore vain without worry lmao
I wouldn’t like losing stealth :/
so the fotm is now ll1pdawayti… LOL
This problem does suck though, I even seen 1 person dc at last boss so they couldn’t get daily chest + boss chest
Fix please!
I still see people advertising for level 1-10, so yes.
that’s pretty much it, might take a little time to find a group but It’s far from impossible.
If looking in-game becomes to long try gw2lfg.com, helped me get parties going 10x faster then spamming in game many times.
@ Vasham, careful what you say to a zealot, we have knives. hahaha… jokes jokes.
Well I wrote a long post, then decided to make it short and sweet.
Comparisons never end well.
The system is the same concept as “story mode” dungeons. Get to “B” by beating “A” then forget about “A”.They just taken it to a much higher degree for the hardcore players in my opinion. No reason to think this game is “in danger” because of this.
Fractals is not a fail.
If people aren’t willing to do lower level fractals with you thats because they are selfish. I’ve done plenty runs I don’t need to to help out guildies on lower levels or just because no one on my current level is available for a group, so I join a low level group. Call me crazy but I’ve also noticed drop rates suck kitten at higher levels, level 1-5 was the best drops I’ve ever got(forget about pink kitten).
In most cases failure in this game is by bad players that don’t listen and learn.
Well said Drew. +1
So much understandable hate for RNG… I like it though, yeah I’ve gone through 5 straight runs of nothing but greens, no rings… nothing. Oh well npc those and still make 30-60s a run still decent for someone like me. Then do 1 run and get 2 exos, buncha cores, and a few rares poof 8.5g woohoo HUGE boost to my funds, never happened again… haha
I see why people are mad about not getting rings but… this dungeon has only been out for a few weeks now?! Cmon, some things shouldn’t just be handed to you in no time at all, I like not knowing when or what I’ll get instead of “I need to get X tokens so I can buy X item”. That just makes me feel like “Ok do this dungeon 20 times, then I got what I want and I won’t be doing it again, why bother when I got the best thing from it”. And then you get more pug groups who want to do “Speed runs”, skip everything possible, do everything as fast as possible, then repeat. That’s not fun for me. Plus this dungeon is tons of fun
The reason I like RNG is because it DOESN’T effect chests. So I don’t need to buy gems to get the same chance as some person with tons of money to blow using mf boosters and crap all day long. Then the one thing I don’t like about RNG is worrying aboot how many people will run with full mf gears and suck kitten doing it, yeah some people can run mf and still pull their weight but a lot can’t, and if they didn’t they would be a lot more effective to the party.
Edit : I realized RNG does effect chests… What I meant was You can’t buy higher RNG from chests, everyone has equal good or bad opportunity from them.
So here’s to a apposite opinion on RNG, I like it
(edited by ReeferKeeper.1865)
Step 1 : Completely reload game
Step 2: Get disconnected
Step 3: Reload again
Step 4: Enter dungeon – SUCCESS
CITIZENS!……
Yeah… uh, Whats up with new dungeon portal?
@shukran
Meh… maybe later I’ll post my build, but right now I can’t be assed to go through it all in text format. So maybe another thief will kindly put your denial to rest before I do. I’m not the only thief I seen running this kind of build, but I am one of the few I think :P
And like I said I’m constantly switching it around as I play so it would be hard to go through each skill and why or when I use it… That last post was a long one for me to begin with, I don’t wanna post 5 pages worth!
Well I find this build alot better then bs build for my personal play style, No I don’t fill up skillbar with all venoms because like you said that isn’t a smart move. I’ve won many 1v1 with this build based on bleed damage and poison. Even a 3 vs 1 where I took down 1 of three then died, but still it wasn’t like I creeped up and killed that 1 person in 2 seconds using burst then got roflstomped in the same 2 seconds. It’s all about how you play the build I guess.
As for your thoughts on the hp you get from venom leaching, tack on the passive where you get hp for every single hit you do, the trait to gain hp for every initiative skill you use, and you gain a pretty decent amount. Only downfall is when you get really low hp your healing skill doesn’t heal enough to save your kitten So your screwed then.
I won’t bother explaining anymore of my traits or skills I use because I constantly switch my skills around in a battle depending who I’m about to run into or how I want to fight, as I think everyone should. But I survive a lot better and do just as well fighting people with my condition based.
I was just trying to prove thief is not only 2 builds based on burst and more burst. Those are just the easiest + most popular.
Thief have 2 way of being. glass canon or less glass canon.
The point is.. Thief without super burst have no way on winning a skilled player.
Coming from a thief who has not played a “glass cannon build” for a long time, You’re dead wrong. Thief isn’t only super burst damage, that’s just the easy, and when I say easy I mean EASY build for killing people. There is other builds….1 Example – Venom hp leaching build, you can hold your own in pretty much any situation.
Think outside the instagib burst damage box.
I didn’t know so many people playing this MMO would rather jump ship from a great game because of a new and improved gear… I understand many of the points made… But I still don’t get it.
It’s not super super important to me to have the best of the best, but I happen to get a full exotic set which is the best so far… I was actually a little disappointed at how easy it was to obtain. I got the same gear almost every level 80 has who didn’t just hit 80 yay? I don’t see people saying LFGM with ascended gear only anytime soon, People don’t even say that about exotic gear or could probably point out that dude using a rare set instead of exotic. Guild wars “life” will go on weather you get this set or not.
Well to each his own I ain’t trying to bash y’all who are horrified for more tiers of gear even if I did a bit? I’m just flustered about how much rage a new rare armor is creating.
I welcome this new armor, maybe I won’t once it shows up but I have no idea what it will be or how hard it will be to get. Which intrigues me.
Bring it on!
