Old vs New Trait System, Viability.

Hello all, Sages here with a rather different type of post.

I wanted to give my input on some thing that has been largely talked about between me and several of my long time gw2 pals, I alone have been playing gw2 for about 12.6k hours and this has been a post i’ve been wanting to make for a long while.

In the Links below You will find the current trait system implemented into gw2 before HoT and the old trait system before HoT:

Old Gw2 Trait System:
http://imgur.com/rNcKiWZ

New Gw2 Trait System:
http://imgur.com/9VnXiC1

The trait system from HoT itself has a few issues in which i would like to point out compared to the old one:

  1. The current trait system while attempting to be a bit more linear causes less build diversity and thus less enjoyable game play for some like myself who would prefer to have a more unique setup in general.
  2. While the old trait system did have the flaw of giving us 300 of two different stats within each trait line, the new system was not needed to improve it. a simple removal of said stats from the trait line and a gear re-balance would have sufficed.
  3. The new HoT trait system removed the need for the skillpoints to be obtained around the world and instead are now obtainable while leveling, though this might be convenient.. It doesn’t exactly make for a unique experience compared to other MMO’s. Personally i would have liked it if they added proofs of heroics to WvW for those types of players but had kept the original idea of having to earn what you got for others.
  4. The new trait system also removed the ability to obtain traits through world events or other means like temples and such, this was a big upset to some one like myself because back then players would do bosses just to obtain a trait and it made for a more enjoyable experience.
  5. The current trait system does not allow for certain traits to work well with others, when there was more availability back then. players were able to find traits that might work perfectly with another instead of like now when some of the traits kind of.. overlap eachother or make little to no sense in being in the same trait line.

Now with all this in mind, there is some viability to the new system as if to not look down upon the hard work of the devs for do not get me wrong, your efforts in making gw2 as amazing as it is now have not gone unnoticed:

  1. The new trait system does make it easier for newer players to understand.
  2. The change to the way skillpoints are obtained save a massive amount of time.
  3. The removal of stats from the trait system really does help define what type of build a player is running.
  4. The removal of the need to use gold to obtain traits was a very nice addition and saves gold for alot of players.
  5. The current trait system did remove the old 5 trait lines we used to have and makes it much easier to build certain builds the right way, since we now only have to worry about 3 trait lines with 3 traits per tier it makes it quicker than before to get what we need to get going.

Now for my suggestions on how to improve upon things, this is going to be just a shot in the dark as it were and some might not like the idea but these are just opinions so keep that in mind:

  1. While keeping the current elite specializations in game, try reverting the old trait systems back to the way they once were while locking the elite traits/utility skills behind HoT bosses like.. the some of the champs in verdant brink for example.
  2. The removal of the 300 of two types of stats within the trait line was a step in the right direction, keep those stats to the gear. This is some thing i personally felt should have been done from the beginning, well done there.
  3. While reverting the trait system back to the way it used to be, remove the need for gold and instead leave it optional to either buy traits/skills with skillpoints/proofs of heroics or if players so choose, defeat champs in WvW or PvE to obtain them.
  4. Allow for the stacking of certain traits within a trait line since some traits actually do work very well with one another but are unable to be selected since in the same tier another trait is also needed.
  5. Put some of the traits/skills behind certain types of content like dungeons/raids/zone events, this will revitalize some of the old content that has since kinda fallen behind and faded away.

I love your game Anet and i know lots of others do to, we want whats best for gw2 and at the end of the day. We will support you, but please remember to not stop listening to the communities feedback. While some of us might not be here to help, alot of us are.

Thanks for reading,

WvW Desert & Alpine Borderlands Concept.

The map selection would look something like this:

<Core Tyria Mist War>
___________________________

[Eternal Battlegrounds]
[Dragonbrand Alpine Borderlands]
[Yaks Bend Alpine Borderlands]
[Blackgate Alpine Borderlands]
[Obsidian Sanctum]
___________________________

<Heart Of Thorns Mist War>
___________________________

[Eternal Jungle Battlegrounds] (Work in progress)
[Dragonbrand Desert Borderlands]
[Yaks Bend Desert Borderlands]
[Blackgate Desert Borderlands]
[Granite Sanctum]
___________________________

Edge of the Mists:
___________________________
[Enter Edge of the Mists]
___________________________

PPT Changes:
Castle: 17.5 vs the current 35
Keep: 12.5 vs the current 25
Tower: 5 vs the current 10
Camp: 2.5 vs the current 5
___________________________
Player kill to PPT change:
Each player contributes 1 point to the current server score.
___________________________

Note: All of this is just a idea for Anet, a player concept not their own. Changes like this would allow for a wider array of choices for what maps to go on, eliminating the current high qeues on higher tier servers and also keeping a more balanced PPT ratio there still so that not one map is worth more than the other.

Those who look at the current Alpine borderlands and dont like them would have the option to go to the desert borderlands instead of being forced to stay alpine and vice versa, allowing for the complete removal of a map rotation system.

Uuuh, how about -not- bringing the desert borderlands back at all and putting them on their own separate qeue instead? so that way there is no rotation and instead of 4 maps to play on, design another version of EB to go along with the desert stuff and make it 8 maps to choose from?

Congratulations to DB.

Well no denying the champ train, but there was a time champ bags only dropped in dungeons and stuff. the champ train ruined the starter zones, thats true. back when the champs didn’t reward anything but EXP and a challenging experience is what im speaking of. there is no need to remove them.

It’s not the quick leveling i am after, it’s the ability to actually enjoy the game again. back when we had champion events in the starter zones where we had a good 10 to 15 players killing them at once. it was alive, it was awesome, and quite frankly.. it was the best leveling experience i had back when the story wasn’t staggered, zone events were actually fun, and skills could be unlocked early so you could get to understand the rotation and try new stuff out.

Now i have to wait till level 10 just to experience the story, i am handed all my skills as i level which makes it feel.. not rewarding at all, and the zone events just.. aren’t fun like they were.

the idea that gw2 modeling itself to be a WoW annex and actually becoming a Gw2 killer is ironic eh ?

While i wish it wasn’t and they would actually do something, we just have to accept it.

Sages.3496

Hello all, just figured i’d put a small rant out here. not unusual for me :P

Reasons why i wont level:

#1. Story Quest Staggering: It was better when we had a story quest per level, giving us incentive to find out the next part of the story. (Even though its complete trash, but still.)

#2. Streamlined Starter Zones Removing Zone Events: A few of the good zones i really enjoyed had alot of their unique events removed, like the fire shaman in lake ferritas outside the black citadel.

#3. Skills Unlocked Per Level: Once upon a time Gw2 was not another WoW clone and did things differently, you had to earn everything you obtained down to each little skill book. it felt rewarding and less like you were handed everything, which i won’t do anymore.

#4. EotM Nerfing: While this might not be a big thing for most, EotM was a kitten good place to level for quite a long time then they nerfed the EXP by 25-30% and the levels started becoming once again. a endless grind, one that just isn’t fun anymore. I personally have not entered EotM in a long while and will not from here on out.

#5. Endless Grinding of Hearts to Level: This is some thing i have argued endlessly, Heart grinding to level just isn’t fun after a while. it gets way to repetitive and some thing needs to be done to help there.

#6. Tomes of Knowledge: Here is a subject i know is going to get a few people upset, but let me try to not do so here. I do believe tomes are just killing the leveling experience because players can just sit around and do nothing while obtaining tomes from their monthly to level if they really wanted to.

And this brings me to my last bit of the rant.

#7. Leveling Via Crafting: Lets get this out of the way shall we? Leveling via Crafting is one of the most effective ways to level if you have the money, but also one of the most boring ways. If this is what i have to resort to just to get to 80 without having to endlessly bash my head against the wall doing hearts or grinding out EotM and getting bag farmed. then some thing needs to change.

While i do not believe Anet intended to make things this way, unfortunately it has turned out that way. Largely due to the changes they have made since that September 2014 feature pack.

Hey all, i noticed all the mantras a mesmer has are in the utility slots and the healing slot. well i had a idea for a elite mesmer mantra.

Mantra of Overload.
Meditate, cast a spell that will damage your target and four surrounding targets.
Damage: 1200
Number of Targets: 5
Radius: 300
Range: 1,200
End Effect: Chaos Storm.
Additional effects: Caster receives two random conditions and suffers mental overload.
Mental Overload: Caster is stunned for 1/2 second and unable to cast the remaining charge for 90 seconds.

Just poke a mod, they’ll get to it eventually. also, as for a dye that would go along with it.. there is a dye page on the wiki with every dye in the game on it if you’re in need of assistance there.

The huge open world events from Season 1 were amazing, I loved them so much and I think they’re really what made me fall in love with this game. (I would love to see a better video recap of Season 1 at least in the story journal also!)

I can understand why they moved to small story instances in Season 2, it makes it so they can be replayed and they can have the chapters available in the gem store later for those who missed them… obviously they can’t bring back the big open world parts from Season 1 like that, it wouldn’t work out.

I would love to see a mix of both of those in Season 3. Give us the story instances like in Season 2, but on occasion throw in some big world event like Season 1 had that’s a lot of fun for everyone. Asking for that is… well asking for a lot, I get it, but I would love to see that if it was ever possible.

Absolutely, a mix would be a great way to do it too. we could have the best of both worlds for it, instanced and open world. giving people the opportunity to experience what LS1 was all about as well as having permanent content like LS2.

Hey all, Sages here.
Looking back on Living World Season 1 where scarlet attacked lions arch, i remember the huge battles we had against the Molten Alliance, Aetherblades, and the Toxic Alliance. The impact it had on the world was seen throughout Tyria not just in Lions Arch, after the fight with Scarlets minions and the death of Scarlet herself. Lions Arch was left in ruin.

I would like to see Living World Season 3 return to the idea that events actually impact Tyria instead of this map meta thing we see going on in the HoT maps where you do the event and it resets, I am asking for permanent change. Change that makes the players actually feel like their efforts made a difference weather it be in a good or bad way.

If we failed to defend some thing, make it known. Make the consequences obvious, for example. The large scale destruction of Lions Arch and the awakening of a new elder dragon.

If we succeed, make that known as well. If we stand up against a enemy that threatens all of Tyria and we beat them, force them to retreat and perhaps even have some of them defect to our side. but do so with caution as it could be a way to set up even more future events.

These are the types of things i would like to see happen again in GW2, things that made the game unique when they did happen. As it made the world actually feel like things were effecting it when they did happen.

Hope You all leave positive suggestions and even positive criticism for my suggestion.
Thanks,
Sages.3496

Not sure it’s an honor but nice to meet you. Again I’m logged in that amount of time, I’m not playing for all of it. How many achievement points do you have (or do you bother with them?).

Dear Anet,
I just wanted to give my apologies for how much i doubted your game for quite some time, the changes that came with HoT made for a realy amazing change to the game. ive had alot of bad things to say since your NPE change if people look back at my posts, but for once you deserve some praise.

The new class Revenant is exactly what i was hoping for, its fun, it brings in names gw1, and allows for set of class mechanics i’d not seen in gw2 before. my favorite legends are Glint and Shiro, one amazing damage combination.

The elite specializations for each class maybe a slight bit OP atm, but they are sure as hell fun. the reaper has some amazing animations, #4 in the reaper shroud makes for some awesome screenshots tbh.

Masteries made for a change in the game, giving us something to strive for that helps us with the new maps and obtaining new sets of gear. i’m quite happy with how these masteries came into play and how long it takes to obtain them, it feels as if we actually have to earn something now.

Harder PvE content made for quite the nice touch to the new maps, people before were asking for new content and you delivered. for quite some time now, others have been mentioning how endgame was lacking. now it feels like there is so much more to do.

Encouraging build variety was one thing i was super happy about, now its not all about that condition damage or zerker gear. things need variation and this change may very well be my most favorite.

New WvW maps added new tactics and surprising fights, i had not expected these maps to be so good but i am pleasantly surprised.

All in all, keep up the good work. for once, i’ve not alot of bad to say.. only thing is the crashes can be a bit annoying, but i’ve seen the improvements and fixes to certain things so i am definitely sure you will fix those issues in due time.

A few questions regarding the forum

Sages.3496

To directly address Gaile Gray in The ArenaNet Forum Communications team, i would ask a few questions:

#1: Will the players ever get a chance to type directly to the devs and give our input on things happening in game?

#2: Are the communications between forum moderators and the players hostile enough to warrent a lack of communication?

#3: How do you see the guild wars 2 community now from what it was at the launch?

#4: Does voicing our opinions on things being changed in game mean we are against Anet and therefore deserve to have our posts removed?

And #5: On the note of posts being removed, since i am asking you these questions not out of spite or anger. but more out of wanting to genuinely know the truth, will this post be removed for addressing a Anet staff or for unneeded hostility?

I know you want an answer from Gaile, however the likelihood of any dev, not just Gaile, is low. It’s not because of bad reasons. I’ts just unreasonable to expect a dev response every time one is asked because there are so few of them and so many of us. Plus we have no idea what other responsibilities he may have. So that statement pretty much answers your first question.

To your second question, it does not really make any sense. The moderators do not actually speak to us. Their job is not to respond to threads but to monitor them to make sure that the conversation in the threads do not become out of hand. A prime example of this is a mod closed a thread about some guy who was complaining that you now need a PAX pass to go see Anet when before you did not need one. The guy was blaming Anet, stating they were purposely locking people out. The mod explained that the need for a PAX pass was not Anet’s decision, but one made by PAX. The mod then closed the thread because needlessly bashing anyone, not just Anet, is against the rules. Of course he opens another thread about it and I’m sure it was closed not too long after that for breaking the rules.

I can not answer number 3.

As to 4, absolutely not. Go look on the GW2 HoT forums. There are a few complaint threads that have been up there, and every now and again the DragonHunter name feedback thread tends to pop up on the front page every now and again. Right now it is not, but I’m sure in another week or two it will be back on the front. It’s not that negative feedback is bad, it’s how you give that feedback. If you come on the forums saying “Ugh this <x> is stupid. Anyone who likes <x>is stupid. Anet is an kitten for changing to <x>” then yea that is not how you give good feedback. It would seem like we need some kind of thread that demonstrates how to give good feedback, and then have someone sticky the thread so that it is always on the front page for everyone to see when they come to the forums. /sarcasm

To question 5, I don’t think so. As long as the conversation remains positive, and not resort to name calling, it should stay. Now will a dev respond to it? Highly unlikely. Does that mean that Anet does not listen to the community and ignores us? No. It just means that the staff can’t always respond to people and still expect to get their own jobs done.

+1 on input here, this is the type of constructive critisizm i was hoping for.

A few questions regarding the forum

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Sages.3496

Answers to your questions, even though I’m not Gaile.

1. No. Players will not get a chance to interact directly with devs. Considering there are hundreds of thousands of players, and not as many devs, that would be completely unworkable and unreaslistic. Forums are how you communicate with devs, unless you’re lucky enough to meet one at a con or something.

2. I don’t really understand the question. Forum moderators don’t generally communicate. Are you asking if the conflict between forum moderators and the playerbase is affected how devs communicate? I find that unlikely.

3. Gaile would have to answer that one herself.

4. There are enough negative posts that remain up for long periods of time to make this comment at the very least disingenuous. Posts are removed for many reasons, and disagreeing with Anet isn’t usually one of them. However, unconstructive posts or posts that are offensive in some way are sometimes removed yes.

5. This post, in my opinion, absolutely should be removed. It’s misleading, unnecessarily confrontational and just adding a line like this is combative. If I were a mod, I’d remove it immediately.

I will state as i did in the post, no hostilities intended in this. which includes that last line.

You can state anything you want, but it doesn’t stop the post from coming off as aggressive and belligerent. If you slap someone and say it’s not aggressive, it doesn’t mean you didn’t slap them.

For one thing, you’re implying posts are removed strictly because they’re negative. That’s misleading and, in fact, accusing, since most people would see that as a negative thing. But it doesn’t take into account the number of negative threads that are completely non-constructive, or just outright rude.

So yes, you can say that you’re not being aggressive, but saying is not the same thing as doing.

I wont argue points of views with you or how people may percieve things, in which case you seem to have percieved what i was asking as a way to instigate. so, i don’t think there is a point in continuing this.

That screenshot displays 10 mins left. Of course OG or the side with the most players is gonna own like 99% of everything – why? Because around the 20 min left mark a lot of people leave because they run out of stuff to cap or they get bored.

Please show me a map screenshot that’s exactly the same yet with 2 HOURS left, THEN you can complain about being bag farmed.

Call like 10 guildies/friends in, clad in real wvw gear and go bag hunt the uplvl infested ‘monster’ sized zergs? You’ll be surprised how easy it is to steamroll over them.

So i would like to say this, this is not the first thread in which something like this has been brought up but there are alot of points to be had here i’m hoping people will understand.

Arenanet dare i say their name on the forums because we all know how they respond to players trying to help the game succeed, you need to balance the maps properly and make it so there is a even amount of players on each side regardless of what server players come from.

I come from piken square and this week we are on blue, which stands no chance against green which has easily 5 players if not more to each blue player, as if this were not unfair enough. looking at the map i am linking, this is a direct result of bagtraining against the side with less players.

Those who believe bagtraining is a good thing, look at this map as a result of your actions and tell me. is it such a good thing? now you have nothing to cap, no players to kill, and absolutely nothing to do. if you complain about such, it is your own fault. Points to OG

Please feel free to flame me, feel free to post negative comments on this thread. but remember, this is not my fault, this is your own.

This thread is pointless, it doesn’t offer any constructive suggestions or anything of the sort. Just cause you say you “played” (think you just left the game running a lot of the time) for 10k hours doesn’t mean you know what’s good for the game and what isn’t. GW2 is in an amazing place right now, it’s going places, growing, evolving. Could it do that faster, sure, but some thing when pushed and rushed can go terribly wrong. All you did by posting this is complain about the things you seem to not like. But if you ask me, you’re completely burnt out from playing. If that 10k hours played is true, you spent more than 413 full days in the game. That’s crazy and unhealthy.

Yep, just because i have a opinion about the old systems in gw2 being better means im wrong. remember the champion shawman in lake ferretas in the charr starting area? thats gone.

Not to sound snotty, but how is your post any different from posts in that thread? You’re not saying anything here that wasn’t already said by (many) other people in other threads before theirs were also pulled into the merged thread.

I understand what you are saying, im not saying my post is any different. but anet has a habbit of not realy paying atention to those who liked the base game. they just do what they wish, when they wish. its been proved before with things like the gem exchange.

Anet, hear me out.

Pretty sure there’s a massive thread somewhere you can post in, no need to create a new one… of course search functionality and all that so here: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/NPE-Feedback-Merged-Please-read-1st-post

like the inability to unlock skills when we wanted to

I don’t understand this one. I’ve played since early release. You never used to be able to unlock skills whenever you wanted to. You still needed to use skill points to unlock skills, your utility and elite skills were level gated. Your weapon swap was level gated. Your traits were level gated. Heck even weapon skills had to be physically unlocked on each weapon.

I really don’t know what game you were playing where you could unlock skills whenever you wanted to, because it certainly wasn’t GW2.

When infact it was, weapon skills more specificaly, also note the actual utilities used to be unlocked at i believe it was levels 5, 10, 15, and the elite skill at level 30 with the traits being level 10.

Tbh i opened myself up for alot of critisism here, i know that. but after spending 9,920 or so hours in the game, i have to take a stand against anet and say.. things need to go back to the way they were, this is becoming another generic mmo.

If you really played that much, you played more than 10 hours EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. SINCE. RELEASE. ON AVERAGE.

I am just baffled that’s… just. What… how can? I mean what do you do in your life? This is not healthy, nor funny…

Yeah.. look at this. very few have the ability to actually claim they have done so, but i can.

So my question to the general population of these forums, do you see how the changes on gw2 are changing it to be something it wasn’t originaly? or for that matter, are we trying to settle for a lesser quality game just because we paid $60 for it?

I wasn’t complaining, I just can’t understand why people think that the new fabulous traits system came with the NPE.

Edit: And it should change with HoT/shortly before HoT – anet is aware of the issues – and expect this thread to be merged with the already existing NPE thread.

Because both Trait 2.0 and NPE came from the China client. It’s just Trait 2.0 was easier/quicker to port so we got that sooner than waiting for the more unified client which was when we got the NPE.

Devs mentioned that Trait 3.0 will be out before HoT.

HoT’s trait point system seems like they are removing the idea of the vendor.. which i couldnt agree more with if that is the case.

Honestly Jana i expect my word to not be taken seriously and the post to be lost in the NPE thread as you said it would be merged.

Yes it was interesting that as soon as it was released GW2 sharply started changin direction.

One of the things that ‘wowed’ me was the awesome art work and style given to the game. It really is gorgeous…

Then Adventure Box came out… which was really popular… but just completely out of touch with the rest of the game.

Soon WvW was full of 8 bit explosion stomps…

Sadly Anet has shown no sign at all of maintaining thier original mannifesto… they always look for the easiest way to generate excitement then use it to cash-in.

Which to be fair, it is a business, and its here to make money… but I still wish that they were more concerned with making a great game over a ‘people pleasing – give the next gimmick’ type game.

Exactly, i 100% agree with you there. Myst you have my respect.

Ive spoken on this issue countless times.. but i cannot stress this enough, gw2 was a amazing game before feature pack 2. the NPE caused a huge amount of changes, like the inability to unlock skills when we wanted to, the removal of alot of fun content in the starting zone, a duty finder type pvp qeue system, the removal of underwater combat in pvp, stories unlocking every 10 levels, and now the trait system.. this never was a thing even one year into gw2’s release, im not bashing on anything you’re doing. im just saying its bothering me to see these changes are impacting the game to such a degree that it goes against its original design.

The NPE has it’s goods and bads and as I have been “training” alot of new players they handle the NPE pretty well and as long as I shut up and not talk about wardrobe and salvaging stuff to get luck and unluck skins before they hit specific levels they will not get confused. I try to asnwer their questions and the rest is up to them to learn and new players do level quick and learns quick and even some players get to much information to quick even with the ultra babysitting NPE so I have to help explain stuff even clearer to them.

Try to play the game as the Veteran you are and let the new players play the game as new players and let them complain about the NPE. So again the only bad part about all this as a veteran leveling a new character is that we have to buy or search for every darn trait and this is not NPE and will get a fix.

Well, if it would affect only new players I could shut my mouth, but sadly it doesn’t. It also affects veterans alike and then everyone is affected, not only when it comes to get traits. As someone has said, using the whole leveling process as a huge boring tutorial is silly and wrong (actually, what tutorial? Like telling players about underwater combat with only pointing the mini map? Tutorial requires practice, not only floating popups). And this ties with my next point…

Basically what I’m saying as a new player is that I don’t know the old system so this one now is just fine.

Firstly, welcome to Guild Wars 2 kindofabuzz. Glad you are enjoying the game.

However, that’s what makes me curious. What would you think about it if you knew or heard about how it was before? If you could choose, what one would you prefer?

It’s hard to tell if the changes were a good decision or not if what is taken in account is only opinions from new players who didn’t deal with the previous way. From what I see a few new players would see it fine because despite all it’s still better than others games out there, but it doesn’t mean the changes were well done. That’s why I wonder if their opinion would be different if they knew how it was before (but learning about it through unbiased way though).

P.S.: @ Sages: I don’t think you should worry that much. I don’t see how your post is bad enough to deserve an infraction, I don’t think you made so direct attack, I see it as a good criticism actually. I have seen similar posts around here and they stayed fine (still published), but who I am to say anything, it’s up to mods anyway.

XD well anet seems to hate me based on the amount of times i spoke out against them.

As a new player I can speak for other new players. We have no idea what you’re talking about.

he’s talking about the leveling ,skills, and trait unlock system we have now, it was different before same for feeding cows now to dance for them in Queensdale, Heart quest.

In some ways.. yes, but in others its much more than just the cows lol

yeah i know, just that one just irks me haha

I would hope the Devs and forums moderators would take into account, this isnt the first time i have atempted to speak up against what they are doing and after having spent 9860+ hours in this game, earning 13500+ AP (i dont go after AP i just earn it), and spending over $1000 on it that they would listen.

I hear ya and know how you feel, it does makes me wonder who exactly they listen too on many of these changes they make.

Somehow i feel the infraction point already >.>
