I’d like to know as well…
I see some people here have similar issues but one more post can’t hurt to get their attention. =P
I can’t log in at all actually. I get to the character selection screen then when I log on a character I get an error after about 30 seconds that says, “connection error”

You get two max from each living story season 2 episode.
I listed a minimum of 8
I was just listing ones that are pretty achievable if you set your mind to it.
So you get 16 points from the Living Story 2 that new/returning players have to pay an extra $20 for. That’s such bullkitten. If you release it as free content you shouldn’t slap a price tag on it at a later date. It’s not even the amount of money, it’s the fact that it was once free and now they force new/returning players to pay extra for content that was originally designed to be free. Scumbag tactics. kitten this.

The legenday silverwastes bosses are worth 1 point each, plus one for killing all 4
lion’s arch exterminator is worth one
completing the Tequatl cheevos is worth 1 (on top of 1 from your first Tequatl kill.)
A bunch of the Fractal achievements are worth 1
They arn’t supposed to be super easy kitten that you rack up on like day 4 of the expansion
That is only 6 points you listed. Most of those I’ve already got within my 15 total. And they’re the “easy” ones. How the hell do people have over 60? I went through the available achievements and they don’t even come close to being 60. The Living Story and other content you have to spend more money on to unlock must give a lot more than people are saying. It doesn’t add up.

Weird, I’m a PvP player that spent 80% time in PvP, and I still got 46 mastery points when HoT landed. How come you only have 8? :O. Did you do the personal story?
Personal story gets you barely any points, maybe like 6, but probably less. You might have spent 20% in non-PvP but to get 46 points I’m sure you’ve played for thousands of hours, so that 20% in PvE is probably a lot. I don’t think 46 points is even close to being possible in PvP.
Btw, it seems that 100% map completion only gets you 1 point. “Been there, Done that” = 1 point. Unreal.

I’ve been stuck at 8 total Mastery Points for a while now (started with 15 total) despite fully completing several different maps + getting achievements + killing world bosses + doing daily achievements. I don’t even think I’ve got a single Mastery Point in Tyria since HoT launched.
It says (verbatim), “Complete content and achievements and find places of power in Central Tyria to get Mastery points.” Well obviously I’ve found places of power because I’ve finished both Caledon Forest and Plains of Ashford (among others) 100% which both have “places of power” and I haven’t gained a single Mastery Point. I mention those two over a boatload of other stuff I’ve done because they both have “places of power” where you commune and then use Quartz Crystals afterwards; 0 points gained.
So either the description is wrong or I am bugged. What the hell.

Never listened to this guy but he does seem to have recaps of every chapter. It is a couple hours long in total so it’s not what you are really looking for unless you get popcorn and watch it at 1.5x speed until he hits the cinematics or anything that looked interesting.

Problem is you are going to either have edited together cinematics or long point by point discussion.
Here’s the playlist of cinematics from Living Story releases from ArenaNet themselves.

Hmm, alright I’ll take a look at some of these. I figured it would be a lot easier than it is to find a well put together summary considering the expansion just came out…oh well
I’ll give up after this attempt
Wait what happened? Did we find out we’re worse than originally anticipated in the expansion?
Anyone? Hmm, figured others would be interested
Wow, was packed on EU. Weird.
Guess everyone’s grinding their elite specs first?
Wouldn’t they all have to grind their elite specs in Heart of Maguima?
I watched the in game video that seems to only recap Living Story 1 and it was like less than 2 minutes long so I doubt that really gave me enough information.
I’ve heard that Woodenpotatoes has a good recap on every bit of lore up until HoT but I couldn’t find any such video. He has tonnnnss of videos so I may have missed it.
I’m wondering if anyone has a direct link to some well produced youtube videos that will get me caught up to speed on pretty much everything related to the HoT storyline.
PS – Also, I’m probably not going to spend RL $ on content(living story 2) that was originally designed to be free.

Yes I can understand awarding people that have played the game for a while but I think it is very bad to penalize newer players when doing so.
Especially when the feature they are penalizing new players with is lore content that directly affects the storyline of the new expansion. Buying an expansion and not knowing what is going on with the story, then finding out you need to pay more $ to learn about the story is just bad design.
Hopefully there is something on youtube that can get people up to speed but the fact that you’re forced to use a third party is pretty ridiculous.
I don;t get your complaint, it’s basically " I don’t know the back story because I didn’t play the living world story so now I should just skip the entire storyline" Do some research and look it up, You’ll be missing out in my opinion if you just skip through every single thing.
I mean, why do I have to pay for this now as a newer player when everyone else got it for free? I just don’t understand that.
For the love of god. Ok so I have to go on youtube to watch Living Story 1, then pay for Living Story 2, then I’ll be caught up?
I heard the living story stuff was originally free? Why the hell did they start charging for it later? God kitten it. Really frustrating
I bought GW2 and didn’t feel like spending more $ for the Living World storyline so I might as well just skip every cut scene and story involved in this expansion since I’ll be totally lost right?
I did the storyline from 1-80, then after that is the Living World 1 storyline that costs more RL $. Then after that is when the Heart of Thorns storyline takes place?
I’m totally lost so far after starting the expansion in Silverwastes with characters I don’t even know. I just think it’s bullkitten that I paid money for an expansion and I know nothing about the lore since I was supposed to pay more RL $ for previous storylines.
Soooo I take it I should just skip all the lore involved in Heart of Thorns? Looks like it
Ravion Hawk, it would have been awesome had we got one point per character. I have 26 with 100% and 10 at 99% waiting for HoT before I finish them. But I got to thinking. I enjoy leveling alts and doing map completion. Would spend several hours a day on that pretty much every day. However there are people who don’t enjoy that yet they spend as much time doing dungeons or whatever. Since there are people who put in equal or more time than I, their time is no less valuable. So if I was rewarded for my time they should be as well. I can see why anet made this call.
Ayrilana, thank you for the response.
26 characters with 100% map completion? Good lord
Imo, yes, with some reservations depending on how people like to play.
If you prefer to level by doing map completion, then do what’s fun for you. But if you have level 80s and don’t have map completion then I would wait. The reason is the Mastery lines. Exp to a level 80 now is wasted. After the expansion, exp to a level 80 progresses a mastery line, and doing map completions can give a fair amount of exp.
Yea, I was going to do it on my level 80 main. I will hold off. I’m glad I asked, thanks
I was going to crank out some map completion from the core pre-HoT maps until release and I heard from a few people that it would be better to wait until HoT releases so I can get exp towards masteries/elite specializations/etc. while doing them
Is this true? Would I benefit more from map completion from the vanilla maps after HoT releases?
What most people do is taking 3 valk / 3 berserk on armor and the rest berserker. What happens is that you have a 15-16k lifepool and a bit less crit chance. It kinda imitates marauder amulett and normally your crit chance is still at least 45% which is enough.
Which 3 pieces of Valk do they take? Since Chest, Pants, Helm have higher stats than Gloves, Boots, Shoulders…
Also do you mean most Thieves get 3 pieces of Valk armor and every single other slot is Berserkers? Including weapons, earrings, amulet, rings, backpiece…and the underwater gear?
I cannot get Exotic Berserker or Valkyrie accessories. I don’t think they exist…cannot find any.
I have these on me but I made them myself from Jewelcrafting, so that’s one way to get them.
If you have Laurels lying around, you can also purchase the Ascended versions from the Laurel vendor.
I have 400 Jewelcrafting…what are they called?
The Berserker is a Ruby Orichalcum and the Valk is Beryl Orichalcum.
Oh, actually these are on the TP for about 5g right now. Not that bad. I must have been searching the wrong thing.
Side note, I just got a Grizzlemouth’s Weapons Chest (Ascended chest) randomly from ranking up in WvW. How rare is that? And how much gold/time would it have cost me to craft, lol. So random. Rabid doesn’t seem too good for Thief though

Sorry, I use D/P and Shortbow in WvW right now. I want to start with that since it seems to be the most well rounded.
I cannot get Exotic Berserker or Valkyrie accessories. I don’t think they exist…cannot find any. I think I can buy Exotic Soldier’s trinkets/accessories but I think it would cost like 300k Karma. Anyone know if you’ll be able to get trinkets a different way in HoT next week?
Also which food/utility consumables? Furious Sharpening Stone does not seem to be available on the TP at all.
Another question…how do you guys buff your movement speed? It seems that no one really uses Signet of Shadows as a Thief in WvW. Not having 25% movement speed seems like a big deal as a melee.
(edited by Showbiz.9725)
I think I’m in the same spot as you OP.
What armor, weapons, sigils, runes do we need in order to be more than viable? Right now I have full exotic with rare accessories since I can’t find zerk/Valk accessories. I want to get the best gear I can have pre-ascended so if I die in a 1v1 I know it’s my fault and not my gear. I hate how annoying it is to track down gear from like 10 different methods just to WvW properly without a gear disadvantage. Metabattle is not up to date anymore.
Can anyone make a list of the best pre-ascended gear you can possibly have and how to obtain it?
Edit – not to mention WvW abilities and ranks where a new player is further screwed by that applied fortitude crap. I don’t know why I even bother to try WvW as a thief new player, so many kitten disadvantages before you even step foot in combat.
Sorry for hijacking and going on a rant. I might just make this into a new thread lol

Made a similar post at the same time, lol
It will be great , indeed. I will be doing all of the Halloween stuff first. Then will jump into the expansion after Halloween is over. I am in no hurry with the expansion. I will enjoy it at my own pace.
BUT YAY HALLOWEEN. I have my costume on in game and ready to go!
Your philosophy is good only issue is that HoT is going to be like an old western land grab. There will be new markets and things opening up and opportunities that open and close in those first few weeks. In the same boat, love the Halloween event but wish it had started earlier this year to allow people to relax and enjoy both versus having to choose between them. But, it is what it is. Good gaming to you!
^ definitely this
It’s not necessarily about being overwhelmed I guess. Just more of not wanting to miss out on one major event because you’re doing the other, lol. I guess it’s true HoT wont be going anywhere, but I’m sure there are daily rewards in HoT that I won’t want to miss out on either
I just started playing the game a couple weeks ago, I am level 80 and enjoying the game a lot. In each MMO I play Halloween is my favorite event of the year. Why have they decided to begin Halloween and release their first major expansion on the same exact day? This can only be a negative thing.
New players like myself are going to be overwhelmed by the fact that there are two major events taking place literally at the exact same time. They also have nothing to do with one another. Whether I do the Halloween stuff first or skip it and head straight to HoT I’m going to feel like I’m missing out.
I know it isn’t really a huge deal (kind of is for me). I just do not understand how anyone thought this was a good idea?

Yeah I price check every rare, anything above about 42s I sell and get the guaranteed ecto value. Stuff up at 60-70s can be sold and that money used to buy 2-3 rares for a potential 0-9 ecto.
As I was forging hundreds of greens I actually started setting aside all the GS/staves to forge specifically to get rares of teh same type.
A bit tedious and makes managing the space more complicated but turned out at least a little more profitable.
The time you spend looking up the TP, buying more rares to salvage, using mystic forge etc could also be more time running SW, etc. I tend to just salvage my green items too since the mystic toilet seems to be a hindrance more than anything else heh
D/D is best against single targets, P/P is only vs single targets. S/P and SB is best against groups of enemies.
Is D/D definitely better than P/P vs single targets in a perfect scenario? I was mostly curious about this. After the Pistol buffs, D/D still wins?
The horrendous: World Completion.
So World Completion. First off, here’s some ideas for improvements.
1. Hearts could have red rings on the map, marking their effective zones.
2. The mini map could have the same level of detail as the world map.
THIS. Also I think unlocking WP’s via some sort of item could be nice
Yea the Staff animations and abilities are what I don’t find appealing at all. Do most think it will really replace other weapons for PvP? Meh
For any staff build you can think of you can replace the staff with S/D and immediately become much more effective.
Hmm, interesting. If this is true does ANet know about it? Seems pretty ridiculous that their new feature is inferior to old builds…
Looks cool I just find the P/P playstyle and rotation VERY boring. Like the most boring build in the game, sadly…
After the balance patch increased P/P damage I was curious which weapons to use for open world PvE (Silverwastes), Dungeons, Fractals, Raids (HoT), etc.
I assume everything on Metabattle is outdated at this point. By the way, how frequently do the Metabattle builds get updated? It’s been a couple weeks now since the balance patch and they are all the same…
Thanks
Just speculating, but if you want a class where you wont be kicked out of super serious meta dungeon runs for not buying HOT, eles and guards seem like a good choice.
Oh I’m definitely buying HoT. I was really just curious if all Thieves/Ele’s would have to play their Elite specs for high end content/PvP in order to get the most out of their characters
The dodge changes and the crippling of our acrobatics traitline almost ensure DD will be used by most if not all thieves, as for the staff weapon, i dont see it being used outside of PvP

“I’m not looking for an answer like, “No, you should play what you like to play, there is no best spec.””
So you basically only want an answer that say: Yes they will replace the old ones?
Reading comprehension: F
He wants to know whether or not the new specs will have an impact on (read: replace) the old meta builds, without having the thread cluttered with a discussion about meta itself.Imho this will depend on the game mode, since for example the druid will be a strong contender in pvp situations (especially in the WvW melee train) while i doubt that the class will have an impact in the old zerker dungeons.
Scrapper however is a strict upgrade imho and will replace the old engi.
For daredevil it is impossible to tell since anet wants to implement significant changes up to release.
Thank you for your helpful responses guys =). I have an Ele and a Thief and I don’t really like the way Daredevil is looking and I was hoping I wouldn’t be pigeonholed into playing that specific playstyle once it’s available (if it outshines the other specs).
(edited by Showbiz.9725)
I’m not looking for an answer like, “No, you should play what you like to play, there is no best spec.”
I’m simply curious if most of the new elite specs for classes will replace the old ones? Will you technically suffer in viability (no matter how small) if you ignore the new specs and play the exact build you’re playing in live right now?
Thanks

If you’ve got any more questions, I’d be happy to help.
Hey! I’ve actually watched a few of your videos, the one where you basically perma stealth around with your Thief partner was awesome. I was watching that one last night, heh.
Thanks for the tip about mixing Berserkers/Valkyrie. I’m going to have to find out where I can get exotic Valkyrie gear. I may have to craft it since I don’t see it available through any other means.
I’m curious how effective a Thief can be in Exotic gear? I don’t think I’ll have ascended for quite some time, it seems like a bit of a grind.
So my plan was to buy a full set of exotic gear on my Thief now that I’m level 80 but I’m stuck on which set to buy. I am leaning towards the Mist Walker set (Badges of Honor) because I read on Metabattle that it is ideal for WvW. However I think everything on Metabattle is from before the balance patch last week so I’m here to make sure I don’t waste 1300 Badges of Honor on the wrong gear.
I would really be interested in small scale WvW and ideally roaming around solo (if that’s even possible as a Thief).
I’d also like to try dungeons/fractals with this set if possible, but ideally for PvP. This is why I was leaning towards full Berserker since Metabattle says it’s the best for dungeons and WvW.
Finally, I was going to buy a dagger, pistol, shortbow first. Then a second dagger eventually for D/D in dungeons, does that sound right?
Thanks for any information.
(edited by Showbiz.9725)
Thanks for the info, helped for sure. Glad I’m not the only one who felt they took too long for the rewards…well most of them
Hey guys, someone on here said they run Teq and other bosses on more than 1 character? I thought you can only really benefit from killing a World Boss with 1 character per account?
The last few days I’ve been doing all the world bosses but it takes around 3 hours including downtime.
I’m curious which World Bosses are the best to do every day? Wouldn’t it actually be better to do Silverwastes instead of doing World Bosses at all? I feel like 3 hours spent in SW vs 3 hours doing world bosses would result in a lot more profit if you do SW. I’m kind of curious why there seem to be so many people that try and do every single world boss every day. I must be missing something?
Also, which world bosses can drop Ascended and Exotic gear?
Thanks
Thanks for the responses. I should have clarified that I’m lvl 61 right now. I’ll probably take Artificing on this character (Elementalist) since I could make an Ascended Staff if they end up being the best choice for HoT PvE content.
Weaponsmithing costs like 2x more so I’m going to hold off on that for now. I’m assuming getting gold at 80 is a lot easier too so I’m not too worried about that.
I’m playing an Elementalist and I’m interested in doing WvW and PvE once I hit lvl 80. sPvP as well but I assume that doesn’t matter since none of your gear applies.
I just maxed out Cooking and I still have my Item Booster running so I figured I’d max out a second crafting skill while it’s still running.
I have enough gold to max out either Artificing or Jewelcrafting but I’m not really sure which would make more sense as an Elementalist with my goals at lvl 80.
If anyone can tell me which of those skills would be more practical to take as an Ele please let me know why. I also enjoy D/D more than Staff but I’m going to be using whatever weapons work best at 80 regardless.
Thanks
Actually I think he already ran away before the picture was taken. Looks like we were photoshopped in the background afterwards
Good video I guess but ughhh…I really hope P/P doesn’t actually become a thing. Looks like the most dull and boring playstyle in the entire game.
Made a Thief to be a fast, shadow dwelling, melee assaulting, pressuring, backstabbing aggressor. Not a “hold #3” and run around outside of fights….guy
Yea, I’m curious how significant the nerfs were to the other classes today. Are the nerfs on the other classes strong enough to the point where Thief can actually 1v1 them? Specifically Ele, Mesmer?
Or is a Mesmer still basically a better thief?
