Surprised to see such little FA presence so far this week. Hopefully it changes quickly or things might get out of hand.

I hear you. I jumped on this morning at 9am CST and we were outmanned on 3 of the 4 maps.

I am considering that the Team Dolyak ([DOLY]) mini guild will have flashyak mobs throughout the match. Once I get the guild bank going we can distribute party foods and ruminant tonics to all members, and announce meeting times and places through the Message of the Day.

I can’t wait to see a group of enemies suddenly turn into Dolyaks and stampede around.

I want to get a call to defend Bay, Hills or Garrison because it is under attack and then when I peek over the walls there is a gigantic herd of Dolyaks that have us penned in. Hoofageddon!

As far as I understand it: There is no truce in EB. EB is a free for all.

As for staying out of each others borderlands and pushing on TC’s…thats the truce.

This is how any truce to take down a #1 server should work. It’s about forcing TC to cover more ground and spread themselves out. This allows FA and CD to defend their own BL’s against any TC incursion with near equal numbers as opposed to splitting their forces to fight off TC plus a CD or FA incursion. If we can maintain this set up, all three servers should have a lot of fun and #1 will be up for grabs.

The opposite is true for me. I keep tying an anchor around it and tossing into the BL lake with a hardy good riddance but it just keeps on popping back up. I’m currently in court trying to get a restraining order put on the kitten thing so I can go on and live my life without the kitten thing.

I had a fun fight with a Thief today. The entire fight took place on one of the bridges and maybe I would have had a chance if I ran a trap build but I doubt it. At least I survived long enough to get 3 barrages off not that it mattered because I was spamming tab the rest of the time and didn’t come up with a target once. Not one time in in a little over a minute of fighting was I able to target the Thief. Kind of hard to win a fight that way.

This particular thief must not be too good. Most thieves put my ranger down and I can only get barrage off once. I wish I had been recording it as it probably looked funny as heck with me tumbling and running about with the briefest flickers of something there but then not there. I must have looked like a crazy man running away from a swarm of bees that no one can see.

I was in WvW yesterday and near our spawn ran into 5-6 players chasing a thief. I got involved and the thief turned around. I died 3 times and came back and they got a couple adds but their numbers stayed around 4-5 until the last push. “We” ultimately won the fight. Told the thief, who didn’t die once, I didn’t do much and his response was and I am paraphrasing: You kept them entertained, soaked up their damage, and provided a little damage in return. So you see we are the pet class, just for other players.

Well if there are not some real fixes for Rangers on 12/14 then I’ll be moving on. It’s a fun game and I think we’ve been patient even though some have been immature in how they voice their displeasure. At the end of the day, a company either respects their customers or they don’t. I personally don’t waste time on those that don’t.

Well said Sorrow and I understand that mentality completely but I think what we are saying is the ultimate goal isn’t to win or be the number one server. Great if it happens but not the goal. The goal is to have fun because really nothing is at stake unlike in poker. I really lose nothing if I lose and I win nothing if I win so I’m doing this to have fun.

In order for me, and I think a good number of people on FA, we need to go out and fight the toughest we can find at the moment. If it’s a 2v1 defense, great. If it’s going into #1 servers BL and taking a keep, that’s great too. If it’s 25 v40 open field battle, I sure as heck hope I’m in the group of 25.

Just to comment about FA’s defenses vs YB’s defenses again, this is not the first time we’ve had basically this same exact picture these past few weeks. We (Tarnished Coast) have trouble taking anything from Yak’s borderlands because their defenses are strong/off-putting. You guys are easy mode in comparison.

I’m not trying to talk smack here. I’m trying to get you guys to play better defense so that we’re challenged. You guys are 8th place, Fort Aspenwood. We might not have a ton of servers but that’s still the top ten. Have a little more pride in your defenses.

You want a challenge.
You don’t think FA is a challenge.
You think YB is a challenge.
So you continue to focus your attacks on FA.
Nice logic right there.

FA is quite frankly spread too thin at this point. It’s difficult to maintain defenses when man power, supply, and siege is needed everywhere. I’m not complaining, since I’d much rather be in our shoes than yours. I love having a challenge, it’s fun. Contrary to what you want believe, your words and the actions by your server tell me you do not.

I don’t think that you understand how it works. As long as we’re able to constantly flip FA in the Eternal Battlegrounds and FABL, YB isn’t a serious threat to us (anywhere). Having the easy meal (FA) means that we can focus more on defense.

There is a door that must be opened. It is locked. You have the key. Do you use the key, or do you kick it down? Obviously you will use the key because it is the logical course of action. The door that we’re opening is points, and FA is our key.

We’re asking you to take our keys away.

You can keep the keys. We play to have fun and it’s way more fun to kick down doors than it is to use the keys.

Score update – 3:10pm EST

That was a heck of a 3 way battle for FA’s keep in EB! Lot of fun guys.

I don’t comment on these treads often but I must ask…….what the hell happened to Fort Aspenwood?! How did the expected 2nd place server get eliminated from the map?

TC focused on FA Saturday and today and YB smartly stayed out of their way picking up the FA points that TC wasn’t attacking. FA doesn’t have the population to fight on that many fronts at once. Smart move on both their parts strategically and no this doesn’t mean there is a 2v1 alliance. Just taking advantage of the opportunity that is there.

TC must have been wanting for targets because once they had FABL green, some of them jumped to YBBL and we started to see some green there as well. There wasn’t any action on YBBL really until FABL went green.

But good news FA! It looks like if you guys continue to implode in 3rd place—and CD keeps the dominating T4 score—then you guys may switch places! Then you can get your turn face-rolling that tier next week—since I am pretty sure you guys would easily dominate both EBay and Mag.

That’s not good news. I’d rather lose fighting a “strong” opponent than win fighting a “weak” one. Again just a matter of play styles.

It is not a contradiction. We are winning because we eat FA, as they are an easy meal. Please stop giving us an easy meal so that we actually feel hungry and consider taking on YB. There’s no point going into Yak’s borderland when there’s easy meals over in FABL and EB.

You won’t go wrong with any of the Tier 3 servers as all three are filled with tough competitors. I’m on FA myself and we just lost a guild to TC so you could help rebalance the playing field if you come to FA. TC is definitely tough competition with probably a little better coverage overall and strong strategic focus. YB is probably a little smaller than FA but are tough determined fighters. Good luck wherever you land!

hmm oh well if we get matched up again..and get bored might aswell all meet at smc for a day and have a dance party plus campfire , cakes foodfight and brawling….oh and have a silent minute for the 41 golems that died to yaks oil.

Dance party? I’m thinking Thunderdome Party. Big circle of players and two men enter, one man leaves type stuff. Longest match of the night of course would be when two thieves enter because the combatants won’t be able to target each other..:)

I prefer a match like this 100 times more than one where FA is just wiping out their opponents. I don’t have a problem with losing the points game as long as we are competitive in the fights.

As for defensive coverage, we need to look at it as zone based(east and west). You really only need 1 guy in a tower or keep to let the server know when it is being attacked for sure, where and roughly how many. That person then would call in the force responsible for defending that side of the map.

I think the dynamics of this match are simply that FA initiates more fights than either other server, and thus gets counter attacked more too.

TC and YB seem to have more methodical similar styles, and as a YBer, TC usually defends what they have, and have great coverage, so you really have to plan to make advances vs them. FA seem to zerg around more, going for things like quick map takeovers. This is good for short gain, but they can often be taken back quickly as well as their locust swarm moves on and they don’t defend/upgrade as they go.

So true. It does seem like FA is 100% offense all the time. No desire to consolidate and let the enemy come to you.

I also wish there was not anonymity. I have had some fun fights with TC and YB and wish I knew who these fine opponents were. I’m an unguilded charr ranger with a raven/lynx Lb/Sb set up that can be found running around solo at times. Maybe some day Anet will let me be just a little more competitive but I like to think I provide a tough fight to everyone except those nasty thieves..:) … and on rare occasion even those thieves if I can manage to keep some distance.

pretty sure Anet already said that Ascended gear will be attainable outside of FotM, and specifically mentioned WvW…….

If they were going to allow it into WvW then it should have been available thru WvW on day one. Put it in for Badges or Karma or whatever but make it available to those of us who will not run dungeons.

Someone on FA has to explain this one to me. On TC BL we had been fighting for a foothold and succeeded and finally pushed through capturing the west keep. During this time YB was doing the same thing in the east and had captured the east keep. So do we keep the pressure on TC and go for Sunny or maybe Garrison. Nope. We swim the lake and attack the east keep. I don’t get it. TC is having to split forces to deal with attacks on the east and west side but we decide to let up and help them out on the east side against YB. Makes no sense whatsoever. I don’t believe in 2v1 alliances because I like a good free for all but when the other guy is helping you out, why go all the way to the other side of the map to stop them?

Is Ranger a DPS class or not?

As a Ranger, and one that doesn’t use traps, I have determined that I have only one option when jumped by a thief: Alt-F4. Unfortunately I’m dead before I can hit that “skill”.. …and no I’m not a glass cannon with hp of 22k.

Agreed Gnat that one of our weaknesses is patience. We tend to want to run around on the offense 100% of the time without fortifying positions with upgrades and siege. Also amazed how many times I will see a keep trying to be upgraded but the adjacent supply camps are still not upgraded to deliver double supplies.

I don’t know why people get mad at being night cap’d. If anyone should be mad it is the ones doing the night capping against minimal forces that should be mad. If you were logging into WvW which would you rather see: a) two or three equal populations battling it out(essentially what we had at reset last night) or b) one server just rolling over minimal population with no resistance. I’ll take what we had last night (NA time) every single time over steamrolling small resistance and NPC’s. I don’t care about the score, but I do care about having fun and I’m not the one Anet is letting down. If last night was any indication, I am looking forward to this weeks battles while I am on.

Good decision to remove them due to their vulnerability to hacks. I’m not a big fan of the bonus to begin with but it’s that much more of a problem due to the cheating.

If you did bring it back I’d like to see a twist on what some have previously suggested. I agree that the effect needs to be tied with holding something permanently but I would suggest making it a tower/keep where the orb currently starts. It’s the hardest spot to hold for the other servers so it would mean consistent effort by servers to maintain a 3-0-0 advantage. Maybe flip garrison and current northern supply camp.

I assume we won’t have to wait for the next big patch but that this will be rolled out asap since other classes got buffed. You can’t improve a bunch of classes and leave Rangers hanging out there for weeks with nothing, but I would like to hear that confirmed by someone at Anet.

The pop issue is an is what it is kind of thing. No one is at fault. Enjoyed fighting DH and SoR tonight but I will say that there are no ques except for EB when I logged at 7:45 CST. The drop off on SF could be opponent fatigue, just WvW fatigue after last week’s epic push to win or any number of other things. I wouldn’t mind being the fly in the ointment and see SoR and DH battle it out this week with SF focusing on whoever is leading.

Two matches a week. Friday-Sunday match. Monday-Thursday match. Heck run two different ladders for matching servers as a strong weekend server may be very weak during the week.

Cut my teeth in Shadowbane. Played Eve but not much more than 6 months worth. PotBS was probably my favorite in terms of tactics on multiple levels. I’ve never played WoW either. I’m actually not a sPvPer and haven’t done a match yet although I imagine I will get around to it eventually. Enjoying WvW too much right now to waste what time I have to play on anything but WvW.

I don’t solo PvP either in WvW unless forced to. I like working in groups of 5-30ish. I didn’t say I want personal competition either. I want competition but on the scale I mentioned and all those fights are about tactics. Strategy is what keep/tower/camp to take and when to take it. Tactics is how you take it and the buffs allow for those buffed to not bare the full brunt of bad tactical choices due to stat enhancements over their opponents. If you have 3 orbs and you squeaked out a victory in a hard fought 30v30 running engagement, then the real questions is would you have won without the buffs or did they save you from the better tactical decisions of your opponents.

I play to compete. I don’t do PvE or crafting. Nor do I care that my server is in third although my goal is to change that through my competing. I don’t care that maps all green when I jump on although I will do everything I can to change that too. I would WvW if there were no points! I’m a journey over destination guy thus winning isn’t really that important to me either. I could die 30 times and win once but as long as the fights I am in are not whitewashes but competitive tactical fights then I am one happy camper.

I can’t stand the Orbs because they automatically give one side an advantage for no good reason( in my person opinion of course) thus tilting the competition when I come across other players either solo or in groups into one sides favor. I really don’t care if the Orbs were taken after 10 hour long sieges or 15 minute nightcaps. I really just want them gone. I wouldn’t care one lick if they enhanced PvE or crafting but when it impacts the competition when players face off against other players then I think it is detrimental to the game.

I was using hyperbole. I realize the bonuses are not as dramatic as my analogy but they are nothing to sneeze at either. 15% more hit points+ gains from 150 more in Vitality probably means a guys stays up long enough to get 1-2 shots off that someone on the other side wouldn’t get off plus he is hitting harder. Now multiply that affect over 50 players confronting an equal number of unbuffed opponents. They’re pumping out a lot more damage over the course of an engagement because they last longer and hit harder.

Every time I think about the orbs I just shake my head at the game designer who thought this was a good idea. Here’s my baseball analogy:

Team1 has the lead after the first inning so they get 4 outs now instead of 3. Team 1 has the lead after 2 innings so they now get 5 outs instead of 3. Team 1 has the lead after 3 innings so they now get 6 outs instead of 3.

At this point said game designer decided that given any more benefit to Team 1 ,who was not just already winning but pulling away even for some strange reason, that any more buffs to them would imbalance the game to the point that Team 2 & 3 just wouldn’t be able to compete. You think?

I’ve been in some back and forth battles with a server that had all 3 orbs and all I could think was how bad would we be mopping the floor with them in this battle if their guys were dropping that much quicker.

I hope they adjust range on trebs to require them to be much closer. You should not be able to hit another tower/keep from a treb built in a nearby tower/keep. Force servers to defend their trebs in the open field and give defenders a chance to sortie out to destroy them without having to lay siege.

Simple solution. Dump or modify the current structure that determines opponents to include matching servers based on similar WvW population over a 24 hour period. If certain servers have large populations during “off hours” then match them up. If they don’t track the actual data which I would be surprised if they didn’t then they can make some good guesses. I’m quite certain that they could look at the maps at midnight and then again at 7am and see certain servers controlling 90-100% of the map that they didn’t at midnight. Match those servers up.

I would imagine to some degree that the server domination has to do with population disparities over 24 hour time period. They should be able to figure out which servers are winning because of that and be able to match those servers against each other. If they don’t they will see a spiraling effecting as fewer and fewer players on the smaller servers even bother to do WvW thus exacerbating the problem even more.

The SF/SoR/AF contest has been a lot of fun during peak hours and want to tip my hat to our opponents on AF and SoR. Well fought, intense back and forth and both servers have earned my respect for what that is worth. I’m concerned about the night capping issue and the clear advantage goes to AF on that front but it’s not their fault that that imbalance exists. Look forward to battling it out the rest of the week!

One more thing, when servers are rematched they should use population trends in the criteria for matching servers. In other words, servers that show a strong tendency to have higher pops at “night” should be matched to fight each other. 3 servers that show similar weak night populations should be matched.

Why have them at all? I see zero purpose to them so just eliminate them altogether. We already have incentives for taking keeps so it’s not like we need more incentive to wage sieges.
