I think something akin to when Dyes used to drop. It was usually just some common dye you already had, but there was a chance for something really cool. And I was always excited to open (identify) the dye.

Not Dyes, but a bag/chest/something that had a random chance for something desirable. Desirable things being different things to different players, of course.

But, yes, the Level-up rewards are one of my favorite parts of the NPE. =)

Oh man, I didn’t think about dyes!? A chance at a random dye would be cool as heck!

…doesn’t the game give those when you volunteer to switch maps now? :P

Yeah. Something small would be nice. It would just make leveling up more fun at max level.

The reward is one Obsidian Shard.

I know the new leveling system is under much controversy, but I want to talk about a very specific part of it. The level up rewards.

I am a huge fan of this, as well as all my friends who’ve been playing. The new rewards are great and add a ton of excitement to your level up. Sometimes they are not the best, sometimes they are excellent, but either way it makes leveling up extra rewarding and is a huge improvement in my opinion.

However, one thing I feel this has left is a sense of disappointment on max level characters for us. While playing on 80s, others are excited upon leveling as they get something new, but my 80 simply levels up without any real celebration.

I’m guessing the devs felt that continuing the level up rewards at 80 would be too much and give players too much loot, affecting the economy, but I can’t help wish max levels still got some sort of reward system.

What if it was a reduced version of the the rewards. Still giving the skill point, but also adding a small extra item or something? Maybe a coin bag and/or a loot bag. Maybe an occasional rare quality item, or an ectoplasm. Maybe with a very rare chance of an exotic item? Something enough to add a level of excitement for an 80 when they level, but not enough to throw economy way out of balance?

Perhaps I’m alone in this thought, but I figured I’d ask here to see what others thought. Perhaps there’s a great reason this could/should not happen I’m unaware, or maybe it’ll be a good forum to discuss that the devs will appreciate the feedback about.

Gas Mask Skin - dye changes hair color

I’ve found a graphical issue with the Gas Mask Skin. When dying the “glass” portion, it changes the color of my Charr’s beard which pokes out of the bottom.

(see attached image)

I don’t know if this is just Charrs or other races. Perhaps someone (Norn with beard maybe?) can test this as well?

Ideally it would be nice if my Charr beard did not poke through the skin at all, but if we can’t have that, it would be nice if the mask color did not affect character hair.

Thanks for your excellent post, Trouvo. If you are indeed from [Fun], I hope you and others realize that DH does not have ill will towards the guild in general. Please understand that most (if not all) the frustration is towards a particular person or so.

I, and I expect DH in general, is thrilled having you guys fight beside us on the battlefield. We encourage you guys to join the WvW channels in TS. Although it can often be filled with witty banter, if you use the appropriate channel I’m sure other non-[Fun] players will join your Zerg and follow.

Let’s hope we can end the bickering on the forums and focus on the matchup. This has been a great battle with lots of fun fights. KN especially seems like they don’t want to tgo without a serious fight!

I’m posting for my friend who can not log in at this time.

My friend purchased the game through a brick and mortar store, but has since discarded the box (and CD key along with it). After a break from GW2 he’s coming back, but can’t remember his password and is unable to reset it due to it requiring the CD key which he no longer has.

The Fighting Hylek is a guild that was started with about 15 friends, and friends of friends.

We were all adults with jobs, or school, some families even. We tended to play at a more casual level and found it hard to have even 5 on at a time for dungeons or other things.

Recently we’ve started recruiting, looking for more people like us. We don’t care what level you are, or how new to the game you are. We are looking for friendly mature players, who play more in the evenings (after work/school) and don’t mind that were not a hard-core guild. We have a 24/7 Teamspeak 3 server for those who like voice chat. About the only thing we DON’T want are elitist jerks. We want the members to have fun, and be willing to share knowledge and teach newbies (which we welcome)

We have increased the guild to about 40 members so far, but are looking for more. Over the coming weeks we will monitor and see who fits and try to create a fun and relaxed environment for those like us with life outside the game.

I can’t guarantee the guild is perfect, or without flaws at the moment, but I’m looking for like minded people to help us shape it into something fun.

In the end I took a mishmash of items from crafted, cultural, TP-bought, and low level skins to make something I liked the look of.

For the most part I really enjoyed this week. However I was really frustrated with the achievements.

Specifically the fact that only some of the event achievements counted towards the title. I missed the chance to go in the dungeon and that is the only thing I am missing. I have 5 fully completed achievements but only 4 count! This really makes me angry since there’s NO indication that the other achievements wouldn’t count! If I had known that beforehand I would have made a huge effort to go to the dungeon, but I just assumed it was ok to miss since I had other achievements finished!

Very frustrated.

@OP – don’t get too excited. This is what I did last patch as I expected them to fix some ranger issues surely, and we were 100% overlooked.

I know they said they were going to be in the next patch, but based on history I would advise you to not get your hopes up.

once they drop cast time for ranger pets so they actually assist in our kills, our class is going to run the show.

Well they keep lowering the player’s damage each patch it seems, so maybe by the time they fix the pets we’ll be right back in line with everyone else.

I doubt it’s taking health off of you. When you are downed you will slowly lose health if you are not using your #4 skill to regenerate.

The #3 downed skill for rangers though is buggy as heck. It only works about 25% of the time. But THANK GOODNESS they took the time to patch non-ranger pets from reviving you! That was KILLING the game, forget the fact that your class-specific downed skill does nothing most of the time.

Thanks for the link but that was done against a regular mob, not a pet. Although the AI may be similar (or exactly the same for all I know) I figured it was more definitive to use an actual ranger’s pet vs this moving Golem for a good video to show to Arenanet. Not that they don’t already know, but this needs more attention.

@Strongfort actually the most effective pet against moving does are devourers and spiders because they’re ranged and as such have no issue shooting the npc, it’s only the Melee ones that have issues… And canines do pretty well too because against slow targets pets have little issue hitting, and canines have 2 leaps, 1 knocks down 1 cripples…

Actually the other day I tested all pet types against this Golem, and the birds seemed to get the most hits in – though I did not do any calculations, or record the numbers.

The spiders and devourers still missed many of their ranged shots, and the dogs (my personal favorite for sPvP) miss most of their leaps still. Probably the majority of the pets hit about the same amount, and it’s all way to low to be effective.

Oh thanks, I did not find that when looking around. The golem nowadays stops much less often than he does in that video too.

Yeah, the bird hits the most often over all other pets due to it having both swiftness and a 300 range on it’s basic attack. Birds are the most effective DPS on moving targets at the moment.

If anyone else knows of more videos of pets vs this moving golem please post them while we wait for someone to make a few videos to show the current state.

For those of you who have not tried this I recommend you go to the Mists and try it. It’s very shocking when you really see how rarely pets hit a moving target – even the ranged pets.

Can someone who has a recording setup (fraps or something) please do me a favor?

Can you please go to the Heart of the Mists, and head west to the one Golem that is running around the pillar. Then record some video showing what ranger pet’s are like attacking a moving target.

Please show melee (at least, ranged ones too if you want) vs this Golem so we can have some videos on how rarely the pet attacks the moving targets.

If you want to get fancy with it you could do a version with the 30% pet movement speed trait and compare the 2 – as it’s still pretty terrible with that trait.

Preface: this is my own ideas, not everyone has to agree with them.

Over the last week or so we’ve all seen a lot of turmoil over the ranger profession. A few good aspects are being taken away, and now we’re all faced with primarily poor functions and skills that are making many of us frustrated and uninterested in our original profession.

It’s clear that Arenanet doesn’t put a high priority on these issues, but regardless, I thought I’d post some changes I’d personally like to see that would help the class’s gameplay style to be “more fun”


I’d like to see a better synergy with Ranger and Pet as I feel it’s the Ranger’s pet that makes them a unique profession. If the change in Shortbow attack speed has to occur, then the pet’s need to account for more DPS than they do at the moment. Currently it’s too easy for moving targets to simply avoid the majority of pet’s damage and this should not be the case.
Here’s what I’d like to see in the patch notes:

  • Pets can now move while attacking. This includes both pet-controlled attacks and their special F2 ability
  • Pets base movement speed has been increased by 30%. The trait “Agility Training” now increases pet’s attack speed by 10%
  • Pets now have a base 10% evade chance. Adding points into the beastmastery tree will increase this up to a maximum of 25% chance.
  • Pet’s active F2 ability will now cancel any other attack in progress and start casting immediately.
  • Pets can now be swapped outside of combat without the 20 second cooldown. Instead pet’s F2 abilities will not complete their cooldown period when swapped away and will still be counting down while the pet is not active.

Spirits are too unpredictable and are dying too easily. This is causing the Ranger to be less supportive that they should be.
Here’s what I’d like to see in the patch notes:

  • Spirits have had their HPs increased significantly
  • Spirits now give flat bonuses when out
    Frost Spirit: Causes nearby allies to chill on attack. 5second cooldown. Activate: Spirit explodes in a icy blast chilling all nearby enemies.
    Stone Spirit: Applies a 2-second Protection to all nearby allies. 5second cooldown. Activate: Spirit shatters into dust inflicting weakness to all nearby enemies.
    Sun Spirit: Causes nearby allies to burn on attack. 5second cooldown. Activate: Spirit explodes into flame blinding all nearby allies.
    Storm Spirit: Applies a 2-second Vigor to all nearby allies. 5second cooldown. Activate: Spirit releases a stormy blast dazing all nearby enemies.

Signets for rangers are not up to par with other professions and should also provide benefit for the Ranger as well as pet. All passive effects of signets should be increased to match other profession’s benefits. Signet of Stone, for example, only gives 35 toughness and should be giving 90.
Here’s what I’d like to see in the patch notes:

  • Signet of Stone – 60 second cooldown. Active effect now applies a 10 second protection to Ranger and pet.
  • Signet of the Wild – 60 second cooldown. Passive healing increased slightly. Active effect now applies a 10 second stability to Ranger and pet.
  • Signet of the Hunt – 60 sec cooldown. Passive now increases run speed to 25%. Active effect now applies 3 stacks of might for 20 seconds to Ranger and pet.
    (signet values changed based on feedback – post your own list on this thread!)

The Pet utility skills don’t seem to be worth using other than Protect Me (which needs to absorb conditions perhaps). It feels like they were all thought of, created, and pushed out over a weekend and it shows in how poorly they function now.
Here’s what I’d like to see in the patch notes:

  • “Search and Rescue” – Increased the revive speed, and the pet will now attempt to revive the nearest player until the player has revived, dies, or the pet dies.
  • “Sick ’Em!” – Increased the run speed and and damage increase of this skill.
  • “Guard” – Sends the pet running to the ground target location, and the applies a AOE knockback around the pet. This skill is meant to use to push people off of a location.

Other changes/fixes:

  • Arrow projectile speed has been increased slightly
  • Arrows no longer give the “Out of Range” message when the target turns sharply

Ranger SB Nerf: Not 40 milliseconds

Since the nerf I’ve pretty much lost all interest in my ranger. I wanted to love the class.

Pets are too unpredictable, missing attacks too often, moving too slowly, and dying too easily.
Longbow was nerfed too much to make it viable and gets [obstructed] against moving targets.
Spirits are terrible, and (other than elite) give us the worst support in the game.
Our signets are appalling requiring 30 trait points to make them affect ourselves, with less benefits than other professions.

The list goes on, and on – but this latest shortbow change was the straw that broke the ranger’s back. Not only was it not needed (as longbow needed a buff instead), but it was so poorly orchestrated that the whole ordeal has tarnished Arenanet’s name. It’s just downright insulting and offensive that they claimed it was an animation fix, and then have given such poor communication about the bugs and obvious side effects on the profession’s viability after this change.

I’ve tried a ranged thief, and warrior, and they both do ranged damage better, but are no more fun that my inept ranger. I’m afraid this will be the end of my short lived GW2 adventure, and it makes me sad.

I hope a rework to the other skills of the short-bow is coming out soon to compensate as well better fit your ideal vision of what the weapon should be. As Oldgrimm stated, the signet to give pet invulnerability works if traited fully in the Marksmanship line – however that stinks that it requires such a deep investment to get.

However, as a ranger I think it’s expected that the majority of our panic button is non-existent since we start fights from range. Maybe if were were in fact the masters of ranged, and not out-shined by most any other class for range damage we might all be ok with that.

madmilitia, I was referring to being in the Heart of the Mists – this is the sPvP staging area where everyone is 80 with full exotic gear. When I do a power+crit setup I end up with ~2300+ power and ~40 extra crit damage. Even with that I can’t get my rapid fire to total 8K on the heavy target golems. Perhaps it’s due to their extra armor – I don’t even bother testing numbers on the smaller golems.

I’m not even sure how you get 4k… When I test in sPvP Heart of the Mists on the large training dummies with full power setup, I can’t get much more than a 1500 crit on an autoattack…

How to change the shortbow skills?

I would say a minor adjustment to some of the skills could really benefit this weapon.

1. Slow the attack a little, increase it’s per-arrow damage and make the bleed either work from any direction, or if still flanking-only, the duration should be increased.
2. Poison duration should be increased, perhaps a bit more damage per shot – this skill is actually pretty good if you use it point blank on a single target right now.
3. Increase the swiftness duration a bit to either 4 or 5 seconds.
4. Leave as is.
5. Leave as is.

The longbow on the other hand needs a 10% damage increase on skill 1 &2, and needs the [obstructed] issue fixed ASAP.

Anyway even if you want to keep the 40ms nerf, and that would be a bad choice…. at least fix our attack speed under the buff which is supposed to make us attack 2 times faster.

Your entire post is quite valid and true (I snipped most of it for length). I agree with your assessment completely.

I think the worst part of this whole ordeal is the fact that they used the facade of it being done to “fix an animation glitch”. It’s just downright rude and disrespectful of their customers.

Kincaidia.3192, will you also fraps some Longbow action in sPvP showing how moving targets cause [obstructed] constantly? That needs more attention as it makes the LB useless for damage purposes in sPvP.

Ranger does not mean someone who uses ranged weapons.

It refers to someone who travels or roams over large swaths of territory.

In GW2 is does indeed mean ranged. As above posters have already said “Unparalleled archers, rangers are capable of bringing down foes from a distance with their bows.” -according to Arenanet themselves.

In WvW last week I saw a solo Thief (not near any of his team-mates) running around re-stealthing so fast that he never became visible. You’d see the swirls at his feet, and he’s be in stealth again. He did this for many minutes until the 2-3 of us just left instead of chasing him around. It was stupid.

If we’re going to slow the auto-attack speed, I think it’s high time we remove the flanking requirement for the bleeds. Warrior rifle, engineer pistol, thief pistol – all have bleeds on the AUTO-ATTACK that require no flanking, and all but the Engi’s have longer durations than the Shortbow!

remove that requirement from the shortbow and fix the QZ speed issue and I personally would be ok with where the SB is at now.

Took a couple of days to get debugging in on this. It is in fact a 40ms difference which equates to about 7% less damage when spamming 1. We made this change because it was creating some animation bugs to leave it where it was. It was also encouraging just spamming 1 which isn’t the most fun gameplay. If our data shows shortly that shortbow is now not effective we can certainly address that, but would do so by improving other skills on that weapon rather than by reintroducing the spam on 1 and the bugs that it was creating.

The 1 key is the only move that does real damage on the SB! The rest are control moves! You need increase the damage on the other moves to compensate if you’re going to use “fix animation glitch” as a pathetic excuse for nerfing the weapon’s only real DPS source. It’s not our fault you guys made the 1-key the main damaging method – we’re stuck with what we have. Rework the skills, add more damage, anything – but don’t just flat out reduce the move that’s the entire purpose of the weaponset.

I still cant believe a nerf was even on the cards for Rangers.

Agreed. Especially with the LB still being so poor – I figured that would get buffed long before they nerfed our only decent ranged option.

So there is NO OTHER spec you can rock in pvp?

As a truly “ranged” weapon for the “ranger” – yes.

The Longbow was fine during beta, and they kept fiddling with it. Then they reduced it’s damage across the board right at the end of beta making it very pathetic due to it’s attack speed. Not to mention moving targets cause “obstructed” on your shots (no joke).

Axe is a shorter range weapon, and is poor in damage against a single target. It bounces to 3 targets when possible, and is where the weapon shines. Its good bleed move requires you to be point blank to get the most out of, so it might as well be a melee weapon.

The shortbow was the number 1 weapon for condition builds, but even then it had it’s problems. Unlike the warrior gun, or engy pistol, we have to be behind the target to get a bleed to stack (they can get it from anywhere).

However, the SB was not without other faults. Yes it fires fast, and with haste was a machine gun for a few seconds – but it hits for very low damage per shot making Confusion and Retaliation the SB-Ranger’s mortal enemy causing us to kill ourselves super quickly if we didn’t notice fast enough or amidst the chaos.

Now with ~10% speed reduction, the shortbow does even worse at it’s main function (flanking weapon). Not only does it’s direct damage do ~10% less, but we now stack bleeds ~10% slower. Shortbow’s main function has been reduced by ~20% damage – and that’s not accounting for the bug with the haste (not firing 2X faster now).

It was the last ranged option that was not sub-par, and now they all are. Rangers are being forced to Melee contradictory to their class title.
