Well the major upside is that the vast majority of the game’s population is too casual or too ignorant to notice or care about the problems that average forum-goers like to point out.
My advice is to walk away from here… and never return.
Just curious is all. Pretty much my entire guild is hyped up about it. I figured I’d try it once it goes F2P, or if there’s ever a trial edition released, or whatever.
So is the hype around Wildstar warranted, or what? The last I saw this much hype about an MMO, it was for Guild Wars 2. Hell, I feel like the Wildstar hype has surpassed GW2’s.
By the way, if a mod decides to delete this, could you at least be professional about it and point me to the correct off-topic forum on this site where we are free to discuss non-GW2 related things? Thanks.
You’re playing the wrong game if you don’t want to be pigeon-holed into one style of play. The only style of play in GW2 is kitten y-DPS. If you don’t play full on damage, you’re doing it wrong.
And people talk trash about the holy trinity. Pft. As if Arena Net fashioned something more interesting. Spoiler: They didn’t.
But if you insist, play Warrior or Guardian.
Well this sounds.. disappointing. I wonder how much of the playerbase actually wants the game to go in this direction, and if Arena Net even cares. Fan service is such an overlooked factor in games like this, and sometimes I wonder if Arena Net is too stubborn and would rather make the game that THEY want.
It’s even more depressing when you compare it to other MMO developers: the FFXIV ARR team practically played career Russian Roulette when they shut down the original game and rebuilt it into the beast it is now (already 1.5+million new accounts since re-release and over 325,000 simultaneous logins, even though digital sales were halted for over a week). And this is not a new game, it’s a game that died and came back to life… that’s dedication to fans and to the franchise if I ever saw it.
Hell, even Bioware/EA is adding 12v12 space combat in their next free digital expansion.
Why can’t Arena Net get off their high horse and do something the fans will love? I don’t care if it’s some vague as kitten trailer of a dragon that says ‘coming Winter 2014’, at least there will be something to look forward to..
Thanks for the link, I’ve browsed through that exact wiki page before but I was hoping to extract from the community some way that this all ties into the overarching plot, assuming it’s still one of the Elder Dragon threat that forced Tyrians to ally with each other.
So I haven’t played in a while, and I’m trying to get back into the game, realizing that I’ve missed a lot of the story.
Basically, I left after the first part of Living Story (refugees) and know they now reside in Southsun?
What of the Elder Dragons and such? Trahearne?
Consortium, Fractals of the Mists, any of the lore been explained for that? I thought it really intriguing.
Just wanting a basic outline of the lore following the fall of Zhaitan and how it all strings together so far, thanks!

Don’t worry, there is no big diference in Exotic vs Ascended, just play the game and you will easly earn Ascended trinkets.
About WvW ranks, they mean anything, as if you play in a server that outnumbers your opponent a lot and you can only pvd, that server will have players with huge ranks, as WXP experience(mostly) comes from capping towers/keeps.
Thanks for the reply. Can I earn Ascended gear doing WvW, and if so, is it a viable method to earn it? I never was too impressed with Fractals enough to farm it over and over.
Been away from the game for a long time, going on a year, so I’ve not been in the swing of things.
The deal is, I haven’t played since before Ascended gear, WvW ranks, etc.
Is it the standard now for WvWers to be decked out in Ascended gear, have high WvW ranks, etc, and do they pose a huge advantage to ‘new’ WvWers?
I guess what I’m asking is, has a huge WvW treadmill been erected since I’ve been gone that all WvWers are expected to climb in order to be competitive?
Just trying to decide if I should bother reinstalling the game and jumping back in. Thanks.
I remember the days when I was new to MMOs and everything felt so.. big. And I was filled with absolute wonder, and I just wanted to run around and around and see everything.
Remember that sense of wonder?? That’s what I love about GW2 and that’s what they do right
Even though lots of people have given up on GW2 and returned to games like SWTOR, Rift, WoW, or moved on to newer shinier games like FFXIV: A Realm Reborn (which actually looks quite amazing..), what do you love about GW2 that keeps you around?
For me it’s the accessibility and the easiness that is GW2:
-There are no complicated mechanics, nothing in the game is really threatening and everything can be breezed through by the most casual / unskilled players (probably like me LOL)
-It’s hard to get lost in the world, which is great! I used to always get lost in the big complicated worlds of SWG, Lotro, Rift, you name it, but GW2 made it really easy and streamlined in that you can literally warp to so many different places in any map. There’s no need to wander around aimlessly in a big endless world!
-To add on that, I love GW2’s focus on instanced content! The world feels like it’s still changing when you go into that instance into a new zone knowing that it will be gone in 2 weeks and replaced by another new zone which will be gone 2 weeks after that. The game is ever changing and all we have to do is walk into the instance instead of wandering around the world!
So what do you love about GW2 that keeps you here??
This game isnt about complicated raids but more about zerg farming and making your character look pretty with new dyes etc
Well you should be rewarded! Ascended gear is where it’s at
Do jumping puzzles together or grind together
that’s content
Farming is fun
Maybe they should change it :P
Grinding is the essence of GW2, I think it’s fun because I can do it and watch TV at the same time :P
Very interesting
It has always been this way from the beginning!
This is true but this is a good thing. GW2 is meant to be for casuals / beginners / less-skilled players than say, SWTOR, which has really complicated mechanics and difficult bosses
There is no endgame, there is only THE game!
do some jumping puzzles or farm zergs
Why would they get rid of it? It is amazing
Well more and more people are leaving to return to SWTOR, Rift, and play FFXIV, so hopefully only the dedicated casual GW2 lovers will remain before long
I am really not sure I follow :/
GW2 is designed to be easy and accessible, not complicated
Appealing to casuals isn’t a bad thing
Negativity comes from people having too big of expectations from GW2 :/ they want it to be a hardcore challenge like SWTOR/Rift/WoW etc so they raise their expectations so high. GW2 is meant to be mindless fun, and it is FUN!
GW2 community is the best because GW2 is the best
Great discussions guys! Keep it up
I <3 GW2!
Zergs are fun though
how can you deny what GW2 gameplay is all about? Go play SWTOR or WoW if you want complicated mechanics with micro-management. This is a new era for MMOs, this is Gw2.
Yes, GW2 is meant for casuals. I’ve said before, hardcore MMO players will find more satisfaction from games like WoW, Neocron 2, SWTOR, Rift…
GW2 is meant for a casual playerbase and this is good
Hmmm :/ I still don’t get why people feel this way
YES it is! How do people not realize this yet?
Bump, more suggestions!
how can we make this game as successful as WoW and SWTOR??
GW2 PVE is supposed to be easy, it’s a game for casuals like you know, people who don’t have time to dedicate to a hardcore PvE game like SWTOR or WoW or Rift, GW2 is designed to be easy, anyone who says no is lying! But this is a good thing!
Yes it is, and that’s a great thing! Because people that this game appeals to (Casuals) have lower expectations, so ANET doesn’t have to worry too much as opposed to say Blizzard and Bioware who make games more suited to people looking for a challenge / hardcore type game
Of course! Who could disagree with that? Arena Net made the claim themselves, they aren’t Blizzard, they would never lie to us
Interesting thread, but who can deny that GW2 is the perfect MMO? :/ change your expectations!
I agree, all the little things anet give us is amazing! Best devs ever <3
lol if you want huge expansions that pop out of nowhere suddenly, go play another game. the living story is amazing and perfect.. nothing like it, that’s what makes GW2 perfect and unique, you never know what new invasion/farm/achievements are coming
Yes! No other MMO does this, so that’s why I always say Arenanet is the perfect company… everything they do is awesome, I can’t believe I ever played other mmos!
Stop hating on farming! It is the essence of Gw2 and it is easy to understand unlike complicated raid mechanics in other games.. repetition like farming is familiar and a good thing as more and more is implemented, Arena Net are geniuses!!!
Bump! Thanks for the responses!
Guild Wars 2 is awesome, obviously, but let’s face it. There are still those ‘other’ MMOs out there. The popular ones like World of Warcraft, Star Wars: The Old Republic, and Rift all have more players and bring in more money than Guild Wars 2 and have fiercely loyal playerbases, so they are obviously doing something very right on their end!
So what ideas from other MMOs would you like to see implemented into GW2 in some fashion?
NOTE: This is not meant to be a suggestion post, simply a discussion on what fantasies you have of Guild Wars 2 :P
My choice: More customizable looks! WoW has Transmogrification, SWTOR has endless choices of adaptive gear, and Rift has their wardrobe function. I would love more options to customize my look in Guild Wars 2, especially because a lot of the sets are recycled with different stats and not much else.
Have fun!
Thanks for the reply
I’m happy this post is getting so much support, more people need to see it and understand!!
“Janes Blonde” has been my favorite
I’m always up for more playstyles! I forgot where I read it, but in an old interview they did mention wanting to introduce new weapons to professions
I definitely agree!! Gw2 is meant to be like a big 3D chatroom, i have said this time and time again. Hardcore players who need to be ‘challenged’ go back to WoW / Star Wars please! As long as I can run around looking pretty and chat with friends in town, I am happy
also look at all the content there is, so many zones to farm and jumping puzzles, achievements… people are just used to massive content additions and expansions from other more successful/popular MMOs (WoW, SWTOR) that they don’t get what GW2 is all about! Hanging out with friends!!
i think it is so crazy that people get bored in this game! There are literally so many zones to farm/zerg around… people are spoiled by games like WoW/Rift/SWTOR.. those games are for hardcore/skilled/serious players who want to progress/etc, but it’s clear that nobody who loves GW2 cares about that! Just have fun with your friends is what I say
Well it’s obvious that GW2 is meant to be a very easy MMO for very very casual players (like myself) who don’t want to worry about complicated mechanics/combat/stats, it is very easy for me to excel and have fun and never press more than 3 to 4 buttons, which I think is great becaus nobody is judging me for not following proper mechanics/rotations etcetra.
I got tired in other MMOs where I was forced to concentrate on fights and bosses and one mistake would wipe everyone, that was really stressful! So that’s why GW2 really appeals to the gamers who are either 1) not able to put full concentration into their computer screens when they are gaming, and 2) are not very skilled gamers. I definitely fall into those categories, hehe
My 2 cents, have fun
PS. I think that GW2 really innovated the MMO genre by making it accessible to less skilled (younger, elder, handicapped, or less experienced, etc) people. Before, MMOs were more appealing to ‘hardcore’ players, but GW2 really changed that.. I love it
