It was assumed that if acquiring was any easier then everybody would get it and wear it ALL THE TIME.
Yeah, that’s the reasoning behind how dumb every requirement is nowadays.

It doesn’t even work with Outfits, and it’d look fugly on races that need shoulder-piece. (Charr) to look normal.

So it’s not like everyone would use them, which seem to be the trend of those selfish rich people’s arguments lately that everything need to be gated behind a large gold sink to keep the prestige.

Kinda like real life society. Trickle down economics has come to GW2. Enjoyment shall be granted only to those on the mountain of gold.

Some people seem to confuse tedium with difficulty these days.

No, it isn’t hard to earn drinks, or use drinks. It drops from presents at a reliable rate and presents come in decent amounts.

However, the problem here is that the number of ways to get presents is restricted to a specific set of actions. Most of which get rapidly stale or are full of annoying bugs/aspects right now, like joining a closing map or not being able to get into a map at all.

Additionally people are stressing because there is no official word on how long this event is running for this year and they don’t want to miss out. If it is 4 weeks, then sure, people could space the grinding out a bit more so they don’t have to put their nose to the grindstone as much.

Honestly having everything controlled by the TP as a fix-all measure is just placing power in the hands of the goldhounds. I honestly doubt the drinks or presents are going to get any cheaper before the event ends as there is a veritable hoard of flippers milking this for all its worth.

Visual Nerfs + Buffing Legendary Visuals

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Thagyr.4136

Make your minds up. Either the game is too flashy or it isn’t flashy enough. Why make such little effort in nerfing Elementalist visuals with generic copy-pasted (All Auras are colored ‘eggs’ now with minimal effects) or reduced versions of their previous spells (Fireball now fire-golfball), while buffing the visual noise of old legendaries?

I’m sure the legendary owners are happy, but until everyone has a legendary then visual effects in this game are becoming rapidly primitive and do not lend a sense of ‘power’ to the player at all. Guild Wars 2 has had a sense of art style for 3 years and you are replacing some of the most distinct aspects of that with such uninspired effects.

Give players a slider. One for their own visuals and one for other player visuals. Let us choose, rather than be affected by some blanket vision for Raids or Esports or whatever you are trying to cater to because I just can’t understand it. If it is Raids, then buff the Bosses animations to overpower player effects rather than nerf our stuff. If it is Esports, consider the fact that Esports come with an audience, and making your game visually bland isn’t in your best interest.

Visual nerfs [Merged]

This is a pure example of putting the cart before the horse Anet. All for raids.

Some of the spell effect nerfs made a little bit of sense. Having ground effects last exactly as long as they do their thing is a good change, as it allows people to grasp the duration of their effects.

Then there are other things like turning fireball into a golfball sized projectile that does splash damage far larger than it’s ‘feel’ indicates. Or turning orbital strike into a puff of a lightning bolt.

I get that this was an attempt to reduce the amount of visual clutter in preparation for raids. But I want to say that THIS IS A MISTAKE. If player visuals are causing visual interference with raid bosses or any enemy NPC effects then you BUFF their effects, don’t tune down players effects to suit it. This is game that isn’t about the NPCs, and appealing visuals is important to players here.

Take FFXIV. That game has some of the most over-exaggerated player spells out there right now. Some of them are so flashy that they practically cause the screen to white out from the explosion. It hasn’t harmed players when they go up against some of the bosses because the bosses are simply larger than any player and have appropriate spell effects or tells to match them.

These are raid bosses. They are big, flashy and threatening in every sense with spell effects that match and overpower anything a single player can throw out constantly.

Vale Guardian as an example is a failure of applying these ideas. Many of its effects are subtle, quiet and tiny. Many times over I’ve heard people say they can’t even see them sometimes and start dodging based on timing rather than visuals in the case of the teleport ability. The lightning bolt is well telegraphed. The Seekers are frequently lost because of their size since a Charr standing on one can cover it completely and the red ring that designates its radius is so thin that people can barely see it, even after all the visual nerfs to players.

These are just my thoughts from raiding in other games. It really shouldn’t fall to players to compensate for a raid boss. Either through nerfing our visual skills, or having the boss have abilities so lost in the visual mess that a mere 10 players can generate. Buff the enemy visuals to overpower a players visuals.

And while you are at it, why not introduce a colorblind mode or at the very least get off this obsession with red and green.

HOPE step IV Problems: Succeeding at Failing

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Thagyr.4136

I pose a question. How do you convince any player who is out leveling their Tyria masterys to NOT complete an event?

Answer is, either bribery or you don’t. And gold isn’t even enough sometimes in some cases.

Frostgorge Sound: A Champion Icebrood Quaggan near Leopards Valley. Only spawns if you fail the event to save the Quaggan from a group of Svanir, which consists of 1 veteran and 2 regular mobs. A single player, either out of ignorance, spite or just needing of experience can prevent this from failing without much problem.

Malchor’s Leap: Champion Risen Wraith in the Cathedral of Eternal Radiance. Has a 50/50 chance of appearing in an event as the Risen try to take back Union waypoint. This requires that nobody kills the Risen Priestess of Lyssa, or nobody defend the Aetheric interuptor to re-contest the temple. Hard time convincing an entire map full of XP farmers to not complete a major meta-event. The people I know who have managed this part of the collection all claim to have done it on maps that were in the process of closing down due to lack of players.

Why did it not pick a Wraith in Cursed Shore. There’s a whole bunch of Champion Wraiths down there both around succeeding and failing events.

I understand Nevermore crafters have their own fair share of this issue as well. Just in different areas.

It’s been 2 years now and this fellow’s escort event is still bugged. Most maps I see him on he never moves from the tower that you find him at. He just stands there. If he does happen to find his feet and move away to do the event he often bugs out there instead and finds a nice place to stand motionless.

This is a big problem as a number of people crafting HOPE require the Branded Devourer Queen, which is the end boss of this event. This is an unfair blocking of progress that is out of players hands to solve. Honestly I am a bit peeved that the decision was made to attach an item to this event without fixing it in the first place.

He doesn’t walk in a random direction. He is targeting a player who he will walk over, knock down, hover over and then kill instantly if not interrupted. In fact he goes into a completely different stance when he does it so you don’t even need to see the break bar.

PUGs will learn. No need to nerf something that is perfectly doable. They’ve learnt to do things like Dragon Stand well enough and that has its own share of mechanics.

All the attacks the frogs do are telegraphed to the max, and once you get stealth detection from nuhoch they lose one of their more annoying traits.

I don’t understand how other people here complain about the frog dagger attacks. They literally take 3 seconds to sheath their bow to pull their daggers, then they BEELINE towards you by running. No teleporting or anything. Just plain ol’run.

Sure, if ignoring all these signs and they somehow hit you with their opening stun then you are in for a bad time. But we have stunbreaks. Hit one and take 3 steps to the left or right and the frog will just continue standing there flailing away at the air in front of him. Stunbreaks are useful in HoT cause of the abundance of knockdowns, stuns, dazes and launches.

Not rocket science.

They have several melee attacks, and if you are a melee character there is no telegraph on what attack they are about to do (which is my main complaint).

Also, right now, Nuhoch stealth detection doesn’t seem to function properly/consistently. The frogs are still able to break targeting with their smoke bomb, and they aren’t always made visible while stealthed.

If you keep them at range, then sure, bladedancers can’t really do very much to you, but not every prof/spec has an effective ranged playstyle and if a mob really wants to chase you down (like the champ for the hero point) there’s not all that much you can do to stop it.

I feel like putting a charge-up telegraph into the attack animation for their stun chain would be fair.

Nice to see we’re back to insulting each other again. Please continue, let’s see this “award winning community” in action.

I’m not sure that there’s a nice way to say, “you might just not actually be very good at this game”
I don’t mind sugar coating but i think it’s less essential than getting the point across.

Funny, doesn’t sound like a skill problem to me, just more like mobs spamming cheesy abilities that don’t sound fun. But then again fun is subjective. So is difficulty, but whatever floats your boat.

You’re right, they are subjective. Most people would agree, though, that boredom is not fun, and most i think would likewise agree that un-engaging gameplay creates boredom. Difficulty may not automagically generate engagement, but it’s difficult to be engaged by combat which requires no attention whatsoever.

Personally, i find the new enemies much more engaging and therefore fun. Some – liek the bladedancers, as mentioned above – have attacks which are very difficult to dodge and have extreme consequences for failure, which i do not enjoy so much, but removing the difficult mechanics entirely won’t make them more fun – it’ll just make them boring, instead of annoying.

A “nice” way would be to offer useful advice, as other players have done, which would be constructive, rather than counterproductive.

Insulting other players gets no point across other than illustrating the shortcomings of those who do it.

We spent the first part of the thread explaining how to beat these enemies. If you still have difficulty doing so when you understand the mechanics, the best advice i can give you is “learn to play better”.
I’m sorry if you take offense from the insinuation that you are not already a good player, but you have to understand that there are bad players out there, and if explanations fail, the best advice we have to offer is “get better”

I stated I play a Knight scrapper which is primarily melee, albeit more focused on defense. I still solo champions within the 10 minutes allowed barring a few annoying ones like Mushroom Queen in Tangled Depths.

The Frog smokebomb doesn’t stealth them, which is funny I know, instead it acts like a teleport. I’ve never seen them hit me from somewhere I couldn’t see them since acquiring the mastery.

What I implied about the frogs simpler approach in attacking is that they are very straightfoward and it isn’t about keeping away. They get locked into their combo animation very easily and as long as you don’t sit in front of them for the entire duration they are largely useless. If you know you are going to fight bladedancers without support then equip a stunbreak for emergencies, since it’s the first and third attacks in their chain that stun. Otherwise dodge the minute you meet face to face, chances are they would have tried to attack you the second they reached you (which is a constant for ALL enemy AIs), and by then you are already behind or beside them from the dodge.

Basically the entire Frog attack is deadly when failed, but easily punished.

If you are out of dodges, then move away from them. Use cripples, immobs, chills, blinds, blocks, all that stuff to stall for time. Not all melee classes have a ranged option sure, but sure as hell most of them have a way to cripple or move away quickly. And again, stunbreaks. If you have trouble avoiding something then equip defensive abilities until you can.

question, do you run full zerker gear?

Zerker isn’t the problem, it’s a symptom.

If you don’t play zerker, mobs take 5x+ longer to kill and that’s 5x time longer to shadowstep, stun, blind, instagib you. You can’t outheal or outlast it, and since some of the mobs (frogs) spend 90% of the fight immune, stealthed, shadowstepping to range, or stunlocking/fumbling you, you’re in for a bad time.

Pretty much this – your best bet is to use some blind/block/invunerability and dps the HoT mobs down before they get a chance to be HoT mobs.

I really don’t know how people in non-zerk gear are doing in the jungle.

I’m running around as a Knight scrapper and I can solo most of the Champs in the jungle if given enough time. All the attacks the frogs do are telegraphed to the max, and once you get stealth detection from nuhoch they lose one of their more annoying traits. I know a guy who is running around in Soldiers and he has no issue with anything on the maps.

Difficulty has different opinions. Some gamers are in the belief that time = difficulty, others are in the belief that something that takes great skill to beat = difficulty.

I also wouldn’t call them entitled, as we are all players here and everyone is entitled to their own opinion about what is fun. You see them clashing all the time on the forums. Many don’t want the ‘entire’ game to hold their hand, they just want it to be reasonable within their expectations. Many expectations were shattered when they couldn’t start off in their elite spec at the beginning, unlike the betas. Similarly were those who thought precursor crafting was the gateway to a cheaper legendary.

It’s all about perspectives. I think some adventures are too difficult because my Australian latency adds up quickly in a time trial where every second counts. But that’s my opinion and it isn’t the same as others. I don’t think that’s entitled or me crying, just stating the facts of my situation.

Heck it was stated they gave up their own chance to escape in order to give some Pact soldiers a chance.

While sad it shouldn’t lessen your admiration for these characters and I’m sure the writers love the fact that you appreciate them so.

I can assert that the RNG isn’t as bad as it seems. I ran with a fellow scrapper guildie since HoT launch and we both nabbed the Chak part in Tangled Depths within a few minutes of meeting the bugs for the first time, and we both got the Mark II golem part when we did the boss on the first go.

Also funny that you should use MOBAs as a comparison. Since I am fairly sure a few of the more popular ones gate their characters behind some form of currency wall. You can earn them sure, but its the same situation for new players that you mentioned. They go in and get their butt kicked by a hero they haven’t got access to (yet).

The Sneak Gyro doesn’t aggro stuff in PvE. Had this thing run into the face of several un-engaged mobs in SW and they ignored it completely. Additionally the stealth it provides stacks just like Shadow Refuge, so after sitting in ones field long enough you have 12 seconds of stealth afterwards, longer if you have two gyros.

Only problem I have with it is that it has the mind of a toddler. Wanders off the first chance it gets and can’t keep up at a run. It’s a great situational tool.

I goofed around in the SW pacman area for ages with the wolves running past both me and the gyro. I love it.

But yeah, my only peeve is that it’s like a toddler. Can’t run fast, can’t jump and often gets distracted by things and wanders off.

Archeage is right up your alley OP. The only peaceful places you can find are the non-war zones (which are minimal) and zones that get peace for 1 hour.

Outside of that you can get killed by the enemy faction, your own faction and NPCs who are all out to steal your hard-earned trade items, which are typically the only way to effectively make gold in the game. They can steal your boat, your tractor, your car and kill your donkey/mount if they feel so inclined. The only way to ensure you get ahead is buying land to farm on, and even then you compete with players for limited space, and once you have land you have to pay taxes or lose it, which you can buy with gold (which fuels the murder merry-go-round as stated).

You might as well call it ’Don’t Trust Anyone – The Game’. And unsurprisingly it has the most vile and vitriol spewing community I’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing.

I enjoy GW2 because it encourages players to work together. If I get downed in a fight in the open world, I can be assured that often players will risk life and limb to bring me back so I can return the favor. Heck NPCs do it too. It is just the kind of game it is.

  • 12:30pm – 2:30pm

^That.

It’s hilarious that people are complaining about time zones when EU and NA/SA actually got the fairer share of allocated time. If you’re in Australia (or Asia in general) and want to participate in the beta, it’s either no sleep or collide with work hours.

Eh, more of the usual for us down here. We have massive companies claiming World Wide releases or participation and even then Australia is rarely on the list sometimes.

I kind of understand where they are coming from though. They want to be there to observe and potentially fix major issues, and as such must conform to their work hours. This is a test more than anything. 2 hour blocks sounds like they are testing the stability a bit with enough breaks in between to potentially resolve them.

Zergs out of control?

Thagyr.4136

I think people have stopped discussing strategies in chat now is simply because people have done the same bosses a million times already. Even in Silverwastes pretty much every class with a reflect goes to the middle lane during the assault out of pure habit. Still, there is plenty of communication when stuff goes bad and people respond to it. That is what I like, but it is typically only in that instance when people talk.

We have megaservers which allows players to always have people in a zone, which is great. As a result we also have zergs. Personally I’d just like open world events to take this into account and make zergs spread out as part of the mechanic, rather than nerf the zerg mentality (which will never happen). It looks bad on the older bosses since they can’t really do much against a zerg and the rewards (in particular the chance for precursors at the present) is too much to pass up.

I’m surprised when I don’t see them out and about for any given point in time. Whatever prestige you think they have was dead and gone after the first year or so since the game arrived.

Legendary acquisition is a long-term project for the game to get a nice weapon skin. They jump through all the hoops to get the Gifts needed for each one the same as many others. The only thing that players could not earn was the precursor, which relied on their luck as well as the luck of others to acquire. It was the odd one out in a tedious and long chain of gathering/exploration and dungeon farming. So they add a few more hoops to jump through to get a precursor and take the luck (and player greed) out of the project a little. I don’t see the problem.

I’d be happy for more queues over the week as a TC player. We have queues around the score reset for a day or two then it dies off, after which we get beat back down by the other two servers since we barely have a night population while JQ never seems to sleep >_>

Stealing and Murder (criminality)

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

I don’t see any mindless killing in Guild Wars. Half the time we are defending settlements, saving individuals, fixing problems or fighting dragon minions who are bent on destroying everything. Every person is part of this effort, which is why in the open world people are able to rezz every player and most allied NPCs they come across.

If you want to see a system like this though I recommend giving Archeage a go. Whole system runs on trade, and there are entire guilds dedicated to being criminals to the point that some servers have more criminals then ‘guards’ (law abiding players) on their own faction. Why is this? Because it allows them to steal and kill both their own people as well as the enemy faction. Double the profit, and they can just pass off their gains to a guildy before having their character thrown in jail to serve out ‘justice’. It gets to the point entire city hubs are covered in gankers just for kittens and giggles.

If you are into that kinda stuff it really is hells playground. I wouldn’t want to see it here though. Interesting isn’t a word I’d use to describe the kind of community this type of gameplay brings.

What Legendaries Are You Hoping For?

I’m sure that a toy pistol would be considered ‘legendary’ due to its actual lethal uses despite its appearance, but it doesn’t make an impressive image. It looks more like a holiday item or something awarded from birthdays.

I want a pistol that shoots freakin lazer beams. Not streamers and bubbles

Badges instead of Gold for Commander Title

I think the Commander Icon in itself is just a luxury, and luxuries cost gold. We have had commanders before we even had the first person with that icon, and they are all part of our in server alliance. If some random buys it expecting to be the special snowflake leader then they will be surprised.

It’s not like the Icon gives them a buff or anything. Players are players, and if someone buys the book and doesn’t prove himself to those who follow him, then players will wise up. It’ll be the buyers loss at that point.

Tarnished Coaster here. You E-bay guys have a rather large population of Bots indeed. I noticed that spot north of Dreaming Bay a few days ago and found at least twelve bots all gathered by the cliffside where the Minotaurs roam about. All they were doing was smacking air until something came into range, so I carefully killed them off while reporting each one.

Frankly you can’t go anywhere without seeing bots roaming areas and farming creeps. Or the ‘air fighters’ that you describe. I’ve seen it from all servers. And honestly the amount I found that day could have capped Supply Depots or added a sizable number to your main zerg. If I find them I report them + kill them if they are from the other two servers (though sometimes I get chased off by their ‘team’). The twelve bots I killed would have shown up on the map as a pile of dead friendlies. Pretty sure someone came and rezzed them eventually :/

I consider having an enemy port back home a victory as it means they will have to run out again to form up with the zerg, and they won’t be harassing supply lines.

The Dreaming Bay three way was awesome. Emhry pushing the north, Maguuma harassing the south, and TC managing to hold out for ages. It all came down to a mashup by the Keep Lord.
