I reckon the abysmally slow updates, the terrible balance to the game every 3 months, and the overall lack of polish in everything they do is hurting the game.

The review stating that you have to be a “yes man” is pretty telling and confirms my suspicions. Anet is a gaggle of idiots that cant handle criticism. Why else would they post that they dont listen to any “negative” criticisms on their own forums?

Reading the description of the gyro I too thought it would be OP but putting it into practice is a different story. The gyro wobbles around barely keeping up with you so you have to move at a snails pace to even get the 30 seconds of stealth. Its pretty worthless for an elite skill TBH.

PvE players being forced into WvWvW and PvP is a lose-lose situation for the majority of people. PvE players dont want to do it and WvWvW and PvP players dont want hordes of people that dont even want to be there ruining their PvP objectives/experience.

Precursor Crafting Overpriced?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: TheDraco.3965

TheDraco.3965

The way the precursor crafting is set up now isnt an alternative to buying one, its a straight up inferior choice. Why would I go and do random tasks in the world when I can farm and bank gold to the equivalent cost. Both of these are too expensive, and if the price is the same then crafting is an objective waste of time.

If you want to get it quickly than farming gold is the superior choice. If time is not an issue for you the collection is superior, since all of the mats can be gathered while doing multiple types of content and you can choose to either supplement it with any gold earned or not.

Time is exactly my issue. Time is a currency. If you are going to make me spend more time to obtain an item then I expect to be adequately compensated for my time. If I could buy a book for 10$ or buy the same book for 1$ a week over 10 weeks, why the hell would I pick the later? The better choice is to just save up 10$ and buy the book.

Honestly if they just removed the timegate from the crafted materials it would be more reasonable. And enough of this “that would ruin the economy excuse”.

Why wouldn’t it ruin the economy?

The economy really shouldnt be the first concern. The biggest problem with the original GW1 is bleeding into GW2. There is a massive economic wall barring players from progression that keeps getting larger and larger as Anet nerfs farms. All this leaves is a very small percentage of players will all the wealth. This is nonsense and should be destabilized.

This is just wrong. You are forced to grind events. In core GW2 you could go anywhere you want and do anything you want, you could even walk to cursed shore at low level. There wasnt a single arbitrary restriction.

In Heart of Thorns massive amounts of exploration are locked behind a wall of experience that can only realistically be gained through events. If they made it so you can gain HoT mastery experience outside of the HoT zone it would be a lot less frustrating.

TheDraco.3965

What are the odds this beta revealed everything the expansion will bring? I didn’t play it, but by all reports I’ve seen this beta did not show that much.

The odds are slim. We have access to only one part of a zone so far. That is it. Although there will not be a huge number of zones, there will be several new zones.

So no, I don’t believe we have seen everything the expansion has to bring. In fact, I find that to be silly.

I believe there will be a lot of content we will never see until the expansion drops.

Or maybe. Just maybe. Arenanet will continue to to exactly what they’ve been doing since GW2 launched. Minimum work/Maximum profit fodder for the “casual audience”.

Open world is not "challenging group content"

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: TheDraco.3965

TheDraco.3965

This talk about the marionette is a perfect example of the point I made in the original post. You cannot have meaningful group content in the open world if your success is dependent on people you cant even reasonably communicate with.

yes you can, you just are going to have to have people accept that they are a group, and that means if a enough people play poorly, they will lose.

i lost a lot of marrionettes, and i won some.
The difference was that people played better, thats a good reason to succeed imo.

people will not learn how to read chat/communicate/learn the game, if they never have to.

I played games where world bosses would wipe people who didnt play right, i dont know why thats such a crazy concept in this game.

You are outlining the problem here and propping it up like its a good thing. When you have an abundance of players who never have to communicate with you and you fail solely because of those people that’s BAD design.

When you have a small number of people that you can actually talk too, strategize, improve play with, where the victory is more within your control rather than blindly on random people that’s GOOD design.

They have world bossed which required like 40-60 people, that’s not to different than organizing 80-100.

It can be done, tequatl and wurm, while not personally interesting, have people doing it who learned how to play it.

People will learn to play when there is an incentive to do so. Even large groups, it happens here, and in every other game.

The difference between marrionette and teq/wurm is that it is more entertaining while learning, with more personal skill and less simulation level organiZation.

Other games have proven this wrong. Ill use the textbook example of WoW 40 man raids. The content was very challenging and had a very very low percent of success based solely on the fact that getting 40 people on the same page is too much. The 40 man raid was abandoned very quickly because they acknowledged this is terribly toxic design for the people who look for challenging content.

TheDraco.3965

A bit of a bold statement but hear me out. Its been nearly 3 months since the announcement of the expansion and the only information given about “challenging group content” is pointing at an open world Wyvern boss. I find this fundamentally antithetical to what actually is “group content”. The open world is designed to allow anyone in the map to participate in fights. Now here’s the problem. Lets say the boss is easy and 50 people are participating. This leads to what is well known as “zerging” and is not interesting or engaging in any way.

So what if we add a bit more of a challenge? We’ll add more mechanics to the boss to make it more interesting and add accountability to the players. By the nature of the system this also becomes a problem. Lets say 15 of the 50 people are really dedicated, know their stuff, and want to get the boss down. Then the other 35 people are a mixed bag of not really invested, casual, apathetic to the situation. Its not reasonable to expect accountability from dozens of players that don’t have the same investment as you.

This is why there NEEDS to be actual group content. Content where small groups of friends can overcome a challenge. Content where GUILDS (its kinda in the name of the game) can form together to overcome a challenge.

"Challenging" content in open world concern

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

TheDraco.3965

Reading the recent post about outposts and adventures has me concerned for PvE. Open world by its very design will never be challenging. There is nothing stopping a giant horde of players autoattacking everything to death. Even if you add player accountability (something this community seems to be allergic too) to the fights it simply wont match the skill it takes and the satisfaction given from overcoming something in a small group. If they go this route many people who have been waiting for legitimate PvE content will be sorely disappointed.

Its living story season 3 not xpac.
No new races or classes.
More tuning to WvWvW when it should just be rebuilt from the ground up.
Maybe some new lands in conjunction to living story.
Maybe new legendaries.
Many people will rage and diehards will continue their sophistry and regurgitate “This just isnt the MMO for you” as per protocol.

I’m going to feel really old saying this but… they don’t make them like they used too. I’m not just referring to GW1 or even just MMOs but gaming as a whole. Somewhere around the year 2009 gaming took a massive change from making a good game of substance, strategy, story, replayability. But now this has shifted to flashy, empty, set pieces. This is really how I feel about GW2. Sure its pretty. Sure its “action packed”. Sure its expansive. But ultimately its a hollow experience.

-no end game
-grind all the time
-crafting

These are all points beaten like a dead horse for some time now that go ignored. I can expand
1. There are virtually no high effort high reward content in the game.
2. All of the end content revolves around grinding ascended/legendary and cosmetics, the only way of doing said grinding is low effort extremely low reward content.
3. The constant nerfing of farming, no more champion runs, NO MORE DYE DROPS (desperate grab for peoples money from lion chest keys).

Two, three, five guys here can keep a thread going forever. But if you count individual names in those threads, for and against, you’ll find that a long held thread doesn’t mean community agreement. It doesn’t mean everyone is saying the same thing, or that it agrees with anything else.
