Utility skills:
- Coolant blast: I like this healing skill, and the added effect from heat makes is really good imo. Will it rival the turret, probably not. But is seems viable. The F skill Cauterize: seems like a nice condi removal up to 4 condis, I would have liked to see maybe 1-2 condis removed from allies as well. But giving this is a dps specc. Might be to much. But nice skills overall.
- Laser disk: This skill looks really nice, and it does seems to pack a punch. Think I had a 20k dmg with extra duration from heat. And the F skill: Blade burst seemed okay as well hitting everything within 600 range. For decent dmg. It doesn’t do much else, but I expected a dmg only utility. So fine with that.
- Photon wall: Not sure how I fel about this. the duration seem too low. And the projectile seem kinda useless. Even with added heat. It just lacks flavor kinda boring. The F skill: Particle accelerator is also kinda meh, but has a low cd so could work with Static Discharge? but it just does dmg. and some cripple and swiftness. And like alot of eni skills. If you don’t have a target it will shoot straight to the ground. Dissapointd with that.
- Hard line arena: This skills looks really cool. And the boons are nice but why in the #### is it not shared with allies. This could finally be a skill where engies could provide some nice boons. But nooo only to ourselves. Really dissapointed here. PLease give us some boonshare. Everything else is really cool and the added radius and duration from heat feels rewarding. The F skill Prismatic singularity: However is freaking awesome, really nice aoe pull and looks cool too. and the cd is fair as well. Loving this.
- Spectrum shield: I was really hoping for this to give engi some more reliable stab. But alas. The stun break is nice though and dmg reduction also really nice. I suggest changing it. Giving it 10% dmg reduction. down from 50% but give a solid 3-5 stacks of stab for 6 sec. Giving it more functionality as a defensive skill. The F skill: Flash spark is kind of a kick in the face. an aoe blind on a 40 sec cd? Like really? I know it gives 4 sec of light aura above 50 heat. But that to me seems very weak and useless. compared to the Prismatic singularity. This is vastly boring and questions the work put into to some of these skills. Completely change this skill to something more in flavor with the engi. We only have like 5 aoe blinds already.
- Prime Light Beam: This skills however shooting a long laserbeam. Now that is awesome! and it feels really impactfull and dangerous as well. nice animation! The dmg is nice and the cc is strong. Really liking this! And the F skill: We’ll this is where I get confused because there isn’t any. it is now our Photon forge mode. Not sure I like this because the elites F skill should be there imo as i compliments the otherwise strong elite. Maybe they have worked out something new I dunno but so far I’m confused about this change.
Conclusion:
it’s a 50/50 for me just like with the Gyros some of them seemed really cool and their F skill really cool. And others just pale in comparison, And seem weird and uninteresting.
- Traits:
Liking the traits so far. They seem interesting and rewarding to me. And since the other skills get changes via the heat mechaninc I like that it only affects the Photon forge mode.
- Photon Forge mode:
I really like this idea and concept, it feels like it belongs to some science aspect of the engineer. Mechanically I like too. It feels awesome to get into that almost burst mode and unleash all those cool skills. The only thing is I think the dmg from overheating is a bit much.
- Heat Mechanic: Again I like this alot as well. Since the traits don’t affect any skills outside forge mode. We have heat to alter/boost our skills. And more risk gives more boost. BUT what I don’t understand is, why isn’t at least our other weapons. Rifle, Pistol, Shield Affected by this as well. This would give more incentive to use those weapons as well. Again looking at Weavers mechanic, transitioning to their other weapons. Why don’t we get that too? it does seems a bit undfair and may be an oversight. But I hope for this to be adressed.
- The missing F skill: On a last note. I would like to ask the question. Why is our elite F skill gone? I get that The Forge mode needs an activation key. But since they gave us the F5 skill with the Elites can’t remember when. They just take it away with this specc? again seems short sighted. And I hope that the devs will adress this too. With a reason as to why?
Okay so I had a look at Holosmith, and though I really like it thematically and mechanically. I do think there are room for some changes/tweaks.
First of weapon skill:
- The auto attack seems to do nice dmg and are not too slow considering the 3rd skill recharges the other skills by 3 sec(pretty neat).
- Refraction cutter: The damgage seems ok given that the Photon forge does alot of dmg. But i’m confused as to why the initial strike only has a 130 range. The projectiles seem rather useless, doing very weak dmg and som bleeds. Plus even with a target they will attack in front of you. Making it very hard to hit. And since the overheat just gives more useless projectiles. This skill if vastly underpowered and kinda dull. No nice effects or animation either.
- Radiant Arc: Getting a leap is very nice. and the dmg plus the quickness and cripple is really good. BUT why og why must it be SO slow! it takes forever to cast. and when you land there is a 1 sec. where you can’t move. This is UNNACEPTABLE. I’ve tried all the new elite speccs, leaps and they are all fast and smooth with little to no aftecast, where you can’t move. Fix immediately! Plus why is it only 450 range seems kinda unfair. should be 600.
Conclusion:
I love that we are getting the sword. But as stated above other than the auto attack. The skills seem lackluster, slow and a bit boring. I dunno if it’s to balance with the strong skills from Forge mode. But the new weapon from an elite specc. Should always feel, smooth, fun, and rewarding to play with. Atm sword is kinda missing that a bit. Especially after trying sword on ele. Getting leap, teleport, and 2 evades. The engi sowrd pales in comparison.
Photon Forge mode skills:
- Auto attack: very simple but very effective, no complaints. It can also be modified to do 600 range. Very cool mechanic.
- Holo Leap: Much better leap smooth and fast. Damage might be a tad too high. But since it doesn’t do much else, than give a slight swiftness boost to allies. It shouldn’t change much.
- Corona Burst: Loving this skill, nice aoe cleave and can give 2 stacks of stab when traited and nice might as well. No complaints.
- Photon blitz: decent range skill although would have liked it to be usefull without a target. The shots seem to hit the ground, when the camera is angled to high. Heat generation seems a bit too hight as well. 2% per shot. that’s 16% heat should ba lowered to 1% per shot. Would also like to see this do more than just dmg. maybe some boons or cripple, blind, daze? might be too much. But a bit more oomph to it would be nice.
- Holographic Shockwave: Really liking this skill. Very nice aoe Launch. And dmg is fair. However I would like not to stand still while doing this. And the heat generated also seems a bit much. maybe 15-20% heat.
Conclusion:
Over all loving the Photon forge mode skills. just some minor tweaks here and there. And I like the mechanic with overheating, maybe the dmg taken from overheating is a bit much. But other than that. It seems like a standalone skillset, that really is usefull for dishing out great dmg. where ALL of the skills seems usefull and not just a couple. like most kits. It also feel rewarding that it’s tied into the traits making you able to some what change the first 3 skills. Really cool.
I have 3 ascended HEAVY armor pieces from PvP. But knowing this I would have bought them for my Engineer my main. When upgrading to Legendary. Can we plz have the option to choose if we want it to be Medium/Light/Heavy? I would hate for my purchases to have been wasted.
What I’m pretty sure A-net are gonna do with this xpac. Is give a HUGE revamp to all existing skills and mechanics for all the classes. So I don’t thjink we are gonna lose our current F5 skills, they might just be changed.
Our F skills are gonna be replaced with other skills. And our F5 skill is gonna be a Foton forge mode. Where we get 5 new skills replacing our weapon skills. However staying too long in that mode or using too many skills. Will make us overheat and we will explode(not sure what that means but that’s what the video says).
Plus we will get sword mainhand!
Well there is a preview of how just the backpiece looks. You did use that right? and if you didn’t like it the why buy it?
3k hours in WvW about 2k on Engi.
Then just w8 that milisecond. We did it before and it was no problem. I actually find the the Cleansing burst is much more consistent now than before. It activates instantly.
I just tested this and with the 0.5 sec delay on detonation. You can literally just spam your healing turret and you will get the full heal, heal from balst as well. So I really don’t see the problem here. The healing turret has just been made easier to get the full heal potential.
I tried to work my way out of this. But my genius. Was not enough to break out of Moto’s Computer ;(
Well got to the toad boss and this happened. That kinda ruined my evening and not gonna do SAB again.
Hmm for roaming you could spice it up ye. And go more offensive But I don’t roam much. So not sure if this build is the very best one for that.
Ofc. one of the reasons why it’s usefull. A tip then. You can use the f skill to reveal the enemies then quickly swap to motar kit. That way you can use it as an opener while still using mortar kitin the fight, If that’s what you want
An old WvW vet engi here. I would say you are getting there. But a few things are missing in your build. for a frontline build. As much as I like bombs they are still really hard to land properly so I would take E-gun instead. Very nice support/condi cleanse 25 condis cleansed in 2 sec+ stunbreak something u need in WvW.
Taking elixir S it’s a valid choice it’s also used on meta battles build. But I also really like the tool kit, 2 sec block on a 13 sec cd, plus a long range pull. Deadly for an ele/necro. Plus a nice cleave with the f skill Is something I really like.
And your elite again valid, but if it’s in a larger teamfight I would prefer the nice amount of fields that Mortar kit provides, Chill, Poison for downed, Aoe blinds, Water field. And it gives u some ranged cleave.
As for traits. The explosive line in a tanky/frontline build is useless. And since u wont need bomb go for Tools instead, much more usefull. Reduced cd on f skills(more waterfield, and reflects) 50% more endurance. reduced cd on toolkit.
Then go Aclhemy line. The 2% reduced dmg taken pr boon from Iron blooded gives you around 8-12% dmg reduction and absolute beast trait. Plus extra condi cleanse on elixir skills from E- gun skill5 and mortar skill 5. And 20% boon duration. Is just too good to pass up. AS well as a free elixir S if you get in real trouble. PLus more protection if stunned.
Gear: I try to keep a general rule saying. As much power/crit/crit dmg as possible while still having just under 3k armor. And some decent health is what a frontline should have. As an engi you can go a bit lower since u have so many skills. But it all depends on your skill lvl.

But let me warn ya engi in WvW aint no picnic. And you will be destroyed if you are not carefull.
Sure you’ll need. At least full exotics(obtained in WvW,vendor/Dungeons/Karma vendors in Orr/Crafted/Bought on TP). And then progress to get ascended weapons, then trinkets, and armor as the last. Ascended gear can be crafted, and is quite expensive. But it can alos be dropped or aquired from fractals (5 man pve grp content) the harder the scale the better cance of drops. The daily chests from each lvl there are 4 lvl’s get exponentially better drops. But gets harder as well. And don’t forget to get the required amount of Agony resist. It wil tell you how much for each scale.

Ye the pvp in GW2 is fair and everyone has the same acces to pretty much anything, except some amulets, sigils and runes. Which costs some gold. And all weapons can be bought from a vendor for free. And all weapons are on an equal level. So there is no possbiel way for anyone to be stronger stat wise. only other ways to build your stats.
For me I had no problems. PLayed through it on Engi, ele, rev, necro, guard. For the veteran jade armor/bow. It’s all about knowing what to dodge, and cc them when needed. And just avoid caudecus, aoe and teleport attack.
sure for the expensive version. I use Sigil of earth and sigil of geomancy. And for food it’s koicake, and toxic focusing crystal. And the cheap version is using super veggie pizza. and master tuning crystal.
I myself play condi engi in fractals. And it is insane dmg! but with a difficult rotation. Condi warr is a bit easier but still very good dmg. And can give nice buffs as well with banners etc.
Seems like a decent build for world maps. Just make sure if u decide to do fractals/raids. Viper’s gear is the way to go. Power/precision/condi dmg/expertise. that gives u alot of power and condi dmg. And can make your bleeds/burns last 100% longer. with the right food/sigils.
No he is talking about the stats, not the actual dmg you do.
It’s because u have a 1000 power dmg baseline, just like u have 1000 toughness, and vitality. But with condition dmg u have 0 baseline. That’s why the numeric value is lower. As for your condition dmg, yes it is quite high. What gear are u running? and is it for a tank role or pure dps?
And speed up the projectile plz!
Made a post about this, not long ago. I wish it would be change to either a line cast. or a ground target. But ye as it is now it’s very clunky.
As many here says the Kits are our way of weapon swapping, and has been stated as such, since the game launched. They just happen to be placed as utilities. Whether that was a mistake I dunno. But they are a part of our core mechanic.
Maybe they could make it so we can place 1 kit where others would place their second weapon and it could function with weapon swap and ofc. have 9 sec cd. Maybe that could open up for the use of our other utilties?
Ye after getting some info about how gyro’s work. It seems A-net are determined to make them useless for dmg. Ahh well.
Ye reading more about the gyros they don’t use any of your own stats, which is so dissapointing. Why though?
I have to disagree with everything OP says. The ramp up in the mobs AI, and difficulty with HoT has saved this game. Because all the leveling zones where really easy but fine while leveling. But reaching 80 and getting more and more experienced. The game needed to get progressively more difficult, as the players got alot more skilled(and that happened REALLY fast, the combat is just that great and complex).
And as for you not liking group content. This is an MMORPG, GW2 has ALWAYS encouraged group play. it’s designed that way, to make you play with other ppl naturally. If you want solo content an RPG might suit you better. Because everyone I know, play this game because it naturally encourages ppl to play together, be it organised(fractals, raids, WvW, pvp) or just random ppl on the map(Events, world bosses etc.)
Ps. Sorry to hear about your disabilites. I suffer from some as well (visually), although that haven’t had any significant effect on my gameplay. But A-net can’t really cater to every ppls disabilites. Since it would pretty much change the game entirely, for a very small minority imo.
Although after a quick testing. The self destruct dmg might actually be lower than the tooltip says it crits around 2,6k and not the 4-5 I that I would have expected.
Since the dmg of this skill has been increased by 50% plus still having aoe daze from it’s F skill. And the change of flame thrower been focused on condi now. Could this take up the spot on the power scrapper builds? I like the dmg it does now, and the self destruct dmg is even higher woth 10% bonus from explosion trait now. like 1800 or somthing.
I’m very positive about this change, since I always liked the shredder gyro. But never picked it because the dmg was so bad. But now…
Just a reminder, as it has been since the HoT cutscenes. Again the Sound effects volume in the cutscenes are so low compared to other sounds like music, dialogue etc. It has bothered me ever since. Can you have a look at this. Since it really ruins the cutscenes.
Fyi. I have tried everyting in my power to “fix” it. but nothing has worked yet. I also know of many other who has the exact same problem.
Yeah ground target skill, would be nice as well.
Well since the update to flamethrowers skill nr 2 flame blast. doing decent condi dmg now, and becoming part of the rotation. It would be nice to make it a bit more visible. Since we have to time it going through the target and then detonating it for maximum dmg. It gets a bit difficult seeing where it is, with all the things going on. So would be a nice change to maybe make the ball bigger, or more visible.
Plus it’s still annoying that we can’t use it effectivley without having a target. since it just goes through the ground. make it a line cast? or something like that.
Well condi wise, it’s a start. But power only received minor buffs. But it’s much better than the last blance patch.
A Dev has said in an ama, that for the next balance patch they have been working on getting engi core function and, usefullness fixed. Let’s hope that will happen. But I aint holding my breath, just yet.
yes we should get new kits. And kits shouldn’t just be seen as utilities. But as the core mechanic that they really are.
I just wanted to say thank you a-net for another great episode! you delivered. The story is well made, and finish the story from the dungeon(very clever, and most interesting) the map is amazing. Seeing some krytan architecture, and green grass again, is something i’ve been longing for. The achievements are fun and varied, and can be done in your own time. Both in the story, and on the map. The events are very nice as well, with all the white mantle attacks. plus some strange ones too.
And an average 14-16 hour playtime on my main.(story, events, map completion, achievements, dialogue etc.) that to me is very impressive, in the 2-3? months time it took to make this.

A-net I looooooove gliding but for the love of grenth. Can we disable the autogliding. It is So annoying when trying to do specifik jumps, and the autoglide kicks in and you go way farther than you wanted to. been doing the new jumping puzzle thing. (And really like it) but every time the autogliding has screwed me over.

Exactly! it was NOT their fault. Blame the bad weather and be mad/dissapointed about the situation, but don’t blame A-net. They are doing their very best to get this patch going. And to all the ppl kittening. Grow up, kitten happens. It doesn’t change anything if we get the patch a day later.

I disagree, on pretty much every point. This expansion was the best thing that happened to GW2. And the vertical maps, THE best map design I have ever seen( How you can not like them? is beyond me) I hope the next one will be even more of this. But maybe more balanced elite speccs next time.
Yes I so agree, it’s really frustrating in fractals as well. When you wanna aoe heal with healing turret but need to look at the grp icons all the time. It takes your eyes away from the battle.
