I’d like to clarify this statement. The reason you don’t want to always blink out of traps is because of ToF (the ring of pointy blades). If you teleport across it (or try to walk across it while blocking) you will still take damage. You CAN however dodge across the ring or walk across it while invuln without suffering any damage. The main reason I say don’t use blink here though is because they can most easily pull you back in (if they haven’t used it yet) or JI to you and follow up with their burst. If you use an invuln to get out of a trap bomb, their burst has to wait, or they waste it. Either way it gives you a second or two to think and react accordingly!
I was actually completely unaware that blinking or trying to block across the ToF trap still caused you to take damage. I’m sure that accounts for a lot of my issues since typically I’ll see the trap animations going off and just blink out in a panic. Good to know!
Hey guys, I just got back from work so I’m reading these comments and it’s really awesome stuff. I’ll try and reply to some of it to get some more conversation going, as I know that the forums is full of ’nerf x nerf y" and maybe we can help some others too.
What do you usually try to do when you face a full trapper?
So as I mentioned I run glass cannon, I try and send in iZerker or Mblade clone to trigger the traps from a distance (assuming they already stacked some on the point) and follow up with getting to the point to either set up an iLeap shatter or a Diversion>Mind Wrack shatter. Usually (stars aligning) this is at least able to chunk off a good 50% of their health, but this is the part I find myself having to Blink out or just getting downed since they “spam” their traps that daze and down me (which I’m glass, so that’s fine I took the risk)
In the case I did manage to Blink out, I assume they have nothing else up to fend me off with since they’ve just blown all their utilities, but they’re usually back to full health and by the time I fight through the blocks and manage to line up some decent burst the traps are back to chase me away, or I die.
Arcaedus
You wrote a ton of awesome info and I thank you for it. Interesting you recommend not to blink out of the trap when caught, as that’s 100% my reaction. I’ll try to keep that in mind. I tend to use BF and my Invulns both offensively and defensively, I suppose in the case of fighting a DH it just forces you to make less obvious decisions, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I may take you up on that practice sometime!
ThatNAESLGuard
I actually enjoy your explanation on fighting a symbol guard, mainly because I tend to not face them as much in unranked (which I have stayed in since coming back to the game, can’t have me dragging down teammates you know?) but I have read a lot about how symbol guards are hard to break through and it’s nice to have a heads up on how to deal with it.
Thanks again guys. I know what it’s like to have a lot of hate in your direction (I main mesmer after all, that’s the story of my life) so as much as I get salty I really do want to learn and this will all be super helpful.
Yes, this is a post about how obscenely strong Traps are in spvp.
No, I’m not asking for a nerf.
I’m asking you Guardian mains to help me in what I do when faced with one. Or multiple, as seems to be the case lately.
I play a shatter mesmer (glass cannon, I’m pretty old school) and I can honestly say no class in the game since I’ve returned has given me issues like DH has.
Now I had been gone for a good portion of a year, so when I first got back into spvp I chalked it up to not understanding the new classes. But I have one of every class leveled and I’ve worked with them all in spvp again to figure out how they all play.
And DH is one I still cannot beat. And I don’t feel like I learn anything from playing it myself because (for lack of better term) I just spam the traps and win points.
So help me out. Too many matches have ended in a loss that clearly was carried by one dude on a Dragon Hunter, and I am willing to learn what to do to stop him. And save for getting salty in map chat and logging out after a match (which I am guilty of because of this class) I don’t know what to do.
Thank you kindly, and I look forward to learning something new.
PS: I am asking strictly about the full trapper set up. The ‘meditrapper’ variant isn’t as obnoxious and typically actually puts themselves at risk which gives chances for counter-play.
It makes a good roamer, that won’t die as easily as a shatter build. Not sure why it isn’t as popular with all these terrible mesmers I see.
Actually PU trash is extremely popular due to how easy it is to play. Minimal effort→ high reward. If you aren’t seeing every single mesmer running this build in wvw then consider yourself lucky. I’ve been off GW2 for like, 3 months and I came like this week and all I found were PU.
The way I always tell that a class is a little too strong is when people start making threads titled “X is not OP” in an attempt to defend their current easy class.
Especially when it’s followed by “People just haven’t learned how to counter it yet” or “It can do all of this but that doesn’t matter because…” posts.
And look what we have here.
The 06404 build provides better defense than 6/6/X/X/X from greater Toughness, Last Gasp (and longer Protection duration), and Reaper’s Protection. These are not negligible defenses.
And you have 6 in Curses in PvP on a condition build because of Path of Corruption, so don’t tell me “64004 .”
I’ll just hide my 6/4/0/0/4 necro over here….
Well of course color schemes match skill colors. What fashionista would have black armor with guardian blue fire coming out all the time? What necro would match his dark green skills with bright pink?
I’ll just hide my pink necro over here…..
Pretty sure hotjoin isn’t meant to be taken seriously. I mean I have a friend that plays condi gaurdian when he hot joins, and I play 2013 dhummfire necro in hotjoins.
So nah, it’s fine the way it is. A place to go just to mess around.
Yeah, loading into a game and seeing 2-3 engineers on the other team practically every game makes me want to kill myself.
Engi has taken it’s place next to warrior as easiest pvp class.
This is probably the first time I’ve ever said this but I agree with Pyro. In Pve setting conditions only hinders the overall dps your party will be dealing, especially when talking about condition mesmer.
Look at it this way, mesmer’s primarty/spammable conditions are torment and confusion. We’re going to ignore the random poison and burns (and in your builds case bleeding, ‘cause without pistol even those aren’t guaranteed) because they are just that, random.
Confusion only procs when a target attacks, which pve mobs have abysmal attack speed and will maybe proc once before the duration ends. Torment is only hard hitting when the target is moving, and in dungeons stacking the enemies makes this mechanic null and void. So you’re left with your bleeds, and your random poisons and burns.
Basically, you’re not offering anything of value to the party. Now people are going to say “Play how you want” and that’s fine, but the question was if the build was viable in pve and the answer..as Pyro stated..is no.
Now the reason your ele build is “okay” for dungeons is because you’re offering enough to the party to just barely pass as a viable addition to the group. Your ele is still dealing more damage and offering more group utility to the party than scepter/torch mesmer ever can dream to do. It’s not even close to a comparison.
Edit: And everyone that keeps complaining about Pyro’s “attitude” need to get a grip. It doesn’t change that he’s correct just because you don’t like the ‘tone’ of his typing.

Make them frenzy charge like those cursed risen that sprint at you the instant you step into Orr.
1: 2 vs 1 mesmer … as soon as an enemy is downed = Moa on the other (possibly by invisible) to finish the target downed easily.
2v1 mesmer? Then you got outplayed sweetheart and need to deal with it. The mesmer was fighting against 2 players and happened to have an elite ready to handle the situation. Same can go for any class that has any CC available (or stealth) to secure a stomp.
2: Invisibility -> Moa -> shatter combo ….. target in crisis.
So a mesmer used either Decoy, Veil, or Torch to go invis…and you didn’t think to prepare yourself? What about ranger with LB 3→4→2 ‘target in crisis’? What about Thief with stealth→ Venom→ Backstab ‘Target in Crisis’?
Deal.
3: Moa on the tank ….
What’s a tank? Is this WoW?
All of them, because I don’t judge.
Edit: Unless it’s a PU mesmer, then I hate them for life.
If the mesmer is sitting in a Shadow Refuge then you have a whole different issue and it’s not just Moa.
Add all the possible tells you want, Moa is never going to be “balanced” to people who are unprepared. They could add block letters on the screen that said “Dodge now idiot” and the instant someone got morphed they’d be right back on the forums complaining.
Either learn to play, or deal with the fact that a mesmer wasted a 3 minute cd skill just to take you out of the fight for 10 seconds.

The video is nicely done, and there are some really nice fights in there. I can see what Sandrox is stating, with some being ganks and the whole running before taking out a lone straggler, however it’s still a good video.
Xiao my advice to you is maybe before posting a video to the forums you decide if you can handle people critiquing it, because based on your replies on this thread I don’t think you are. It’s not like you’re the best players in the game, so don’t act like you’re above being criticized.
I do wonder if mesmer can achieve the same thing by having 3 clone death traits with DE (probably with energy sigil due to clone demands), mantra of distraction (plus harmonious mantra?) with perplexity, and condi duration food etc. But that would probably be pushing it since opponents need to be actively destroying clones.
So playing PU?
We’re all generally pretty terrible people. I guarantee that the one person that whispered to your friend is an example of literally every other player in the entire game.
I don’t know what ancient computers people are playing on but I’ve never had an issue ever landing a Bull’s Rush and I play with 11 fps on a good day.
As someone who likes to duel in wvw, I respect other people who only play for PPT. Oftentimes people who are dueling are doing so in an area not ‘in the way’ and so I don’t see a reason for PPT players to not respect players who are dueling.
If the duel is in the middle of the road though then I don’t think those involved have a right to complain. After all, you can’t expect people to know the different between a ‘this is a duel’ and ‘I was jumped heading to south camp help me’ encounter.
Hey there,
Here are a few tidbits from the team:
- A lot of newer players had trouble with the interface. That doesn’t apply to you, you’re veterans who have been around the conversion block a time or two. But newer players will benefit from the updated system.
- The goal was to make the Gem Store more like other shopping experiences, and if you think about it, there is more of that feel to it now.
- You may be surprised to know this (I know I was) but very few people bought gems at smaller denominations than the first one offered in the new system. That’s not to say they never did, nor that there wouldn’t be the desire to do so. But overall, the current options were selected based on player purchases in the past.
- The team is going to listen to your feedback and, if and when it’s practical and desirable, they can look towards adjusting the new system to better meet your needs.
So please keep your thoughts coming on the new system. Feel free to make suggestions but please, keeping them constructive would be very much appreciated.
If it was so confusing (and let’s be real here, it wasn’t) then instead of starting at 400 gems the least that could have been done is make the lowest option 200 gems. God forbid I want to buy trans charges or something similar in price and I have to fork over 75g for something that used to be about 25g or so.
That’s not right no matter what way you spin it. Being able to make small transactions was something that I appreciated back when I was a new player, but I guess that opinion is irrelevant compared to the apparently idiot new players that we’re trying to appeal to now.
I don’t normally think lowly of Anet decisions, but this was stupid.

Yes, though I use a slightly different set up for my condi build. It’ll be nice to have a slight buff to it for sure. For reference I use Trav runes and always have blink as a utility, so you should be fine.
Shatter isn’t easy to play in wvw since illusions can be killed before they hit a target, but once you get into the flow of how it works it’s devastating.
…skillfully played PU condie build..
These nouns and adjectives don’t go together.
1] Trait PU (4/4/6/0/0)
2] Gear in full condi (rabids preferably)
3] Have at least Scepter&Torch
4] Go into pvp mode of your choice
5] Apply face gently to keyboard, proceed to roll back and forthCongrats, you are now a pro PU mesmer.
Alternatively (My Preference, Above is good too)
1] Trait PU (4/4/6/0/0)
2] Gear in full power (zerkers preferably)
3] Equip GS + Sw/T
4] Go into WvW.
5] Apply face gently to keyboard, proceed to roll back and forth
6]Congrats, you are now a pro PU mesmer.^^ I play this when I feel like winning 1v2’s even though I’m not very good.
I don’t really like PU in PvP. You shouldn’t be stealthing on points.
Oh yeah, I forgot people actually play PU in zerker. At least that adds a little bit of effort since you theoretically can be killed sometimes.
1] Trait PU (4/4/6/0/0)
2] Gear in full condi (rabids preferably)
3] Have at least Scepter&Torch
4] Go into pvp mode of your choice
5] Apply face gently to keyboard, proceed to roll back and forth
Congrats, you are now a pro PU mesmer.
…
Precisely. All classes I believe have the potential to be truly devastating and intricate when placed in the hands of certain players. That doesn’t change that some classes (or builds) have the ability to be picked up and succeeded with with relative ease.
And maybe I should have stated earlier that I was looking at this from a spvp perspective, where engis have it even easier. Sure, in wvw engi is a little more challenging due to the open field nature. However in a game mode where you essentially have to stay on a point that the engi can more than control with his kitten nal, you can see where what they have is a little too much.
…
Your point however helps my own point further.
I agree, as I already stated, that skilled players can make engi truly shine due to their knowledge and abilities as a player, however average engi Rose can jump in and do almost as good rolling my face on the keys. I may not know the proper rotations (Spoiler: I don’t) but there’s not much anyone can do under the pressure that engi’s can dish out, whether they know what they’re doing or not. That makes the class have an extremely low skill floor.
There’s a reason so many people are running engi in spvp, and it’s not because it’s complicated. Players always will use what will bring them the easiest victory.
I don’t know Unlucky I feel like you’re using DS wrong, in fights I rarely find myself without it’s loving embrace. Then again, I play a berserker necro and just roll in the amount of DS I can generate. Honestly my health bar itself gets barely touched with proper rotations.
So yeah, pretty sure that’s more annoying than a 3 second invuln.
Then can I have Death Shroud piercing trait?
‘Cause it’s hella annoying fighting through 2-3 health bars in a fight while I’m melting to every condition in the game.
I agree that d/d ele currently is strong but I don’t think it’s the classes fault. I think it’s Strength Runes and Celes Amulet that need to be looked at. Sure, d/d ele has a lot of tools at it’s disposal but it wasn’t until these two were added in that it became an issue.
That’s just my opinion.
Yes, experienced engineer tend to not camp in kits. So are you suggesting you are not constantly spamming weapons skills, heals, utilities, elites, and dodges, on every single profession in every fight?
What I’m suggesting is that in my experience some classes take more thought process to their ‘spam’ as opposed to others. I have an 80 of every class, and am extremely good at playing at the minimal skill level required for all of them.
In my mediocre experience I’ve found that engi is one of the classes that takes the least amount of thought in order to succeed, as I can just click though my kits..rinse and repeat..oh look I’m winning.
Every class has their own spam, engi just has more than others. It takes as much thought as hambow warrior in my opinion. Certainly not as complex as people like to preach.
How are they going to get the AI to understand capping and de-capping points if they can’t even get my pet to understand how to climb a ledge?
Best comment.
I always find it comical how posters try to throw the word “spam” around when they are trying to put down another profession in the “X profession is OP” threads. As if you are not constantly spamming weapons skills, heals, utilities, elites, and dodges, on every single profession in every fight.
Except in certain classes case (Engi, ele, thief) there is literally spam. Engineers always have something available to them, and for some reason this ability to consistently toss everything out and repeat makes them a “high skill” class.
Maybe players who have played engi extensively can actually weave these skills together efficiantly and get the most from the class, but when I pick up my engi and spam grenades on point and down 3 players it’s not because the class is high skill.
Yes, running around with permanent swiftness (and until recently permanent vigor), two blocks on sub-30 second cooldowns that don’t cause a root and armor, healing and passives out the wazoo is very difficult compared to us peons playing faceroll classes. 3-kit Engineer really is the “endgame class”, it’s just so micro-heavy and high risk, much wow.
Literally this. Having more skills to spam doesn’t make the class more challenging like everyone seems to believe.
Have you tried like looking in the general direction of the ele? They’re built so glassy that sneezing will put them in down state.
Charr could stand to get more ‘skimpy’ armor sets, in general. They definitely need more leg armors with subligaria (for all armor classes), at the very least. Pants luck ridiculous on charr. Tights are even worse.
I’m with you on that. I want my Charr to wear more “savage” looking armor that reveals the beautiful fur and patterns I got to design them with.
Skimpy Charr make it happen!
This thread depresses me.
I feel like it’s a little out of place.
“haha I now have the same boons as you! You poor fool!”
“..okay..”
There’s no real benefit to having the skill that would make you choose it over something else, unless you were running a gimmick boonshare build that would be as useful as a mesmer playing a gimmick boonshare build.
All the classes.
I have an 80 of everyone (except ranger, but obviously glass rangers are great now) and I play all of them pure glass cannon builds. Spvp, pve, wvw. Glass is life.
Warriors use Rush to engage? I’ve only ever seen it as they zip away in the distance.
“wahhhhhhhhh…”
“QQ”
Now considering that, I beg you, describe for me in great detail what your character would smell like?
Bloodstone dust.
This is the best post
Please stop the melodramatics, it’s getting pathetic. God forbid warrior has a little risk.

I really love how now that the warrior is finally getting toned down everyone is losing their minds.
This thread is pure gold.
So in comparison my post isn’t really that bad. Things certainly took a sharp turn to personal attacks pretty quick.
Gonna start off this thread strong with the most unpopular of posts:
What I hate seeing other mesmer’s do the most…
Play PU – The instant I see a PU mesmer in wvw (which let’s be honest, isn’t exactly a scavenger hunt) I cringe.
Auto with GS in close range – I can’t be the only one who has seen players run closer to their target when in auto? I mean ignoring the fact that you shouldn’t be spamming auto excessively anyway, but does no one notice the range factor?
Cut and Paste – This kinda goes with the build diversity point/creativity, but I’m just tired of every mesmer being a clone (eh? eh?) of every other mesmer. “Oh you have to take this trait, you have to do this to be viable, you HAVE to HAVE to…” For one of the most creative classes I’ve ever seen the players it attracts… are not.
And this last one is my own little pet peeve..
Their names – I am..beyond tired..of walking through any area of the game and seeing the names “Illusions Delusions” and “Illusionary Magee” and “Mizz Illusionzz”. It’s literally the most annoying thing on the planet to me. And it seems to be only mesmer that does it. You see maybe a couple necro’s with death themed named or ele’s with element names, but for every 1 of those I can promise there are 20 illusion named mesmers.
You’re not the first person to notice this.
This is the number one reason why many players have no respect for condition builds and many top streamers are laughed offline and heckled for using them. While some specs will get laughed out of organized dueling for how easy they are too play (PU / clone death mesmer, p/d thief, any spec of anything with perplexity runes), condition builds face lots of ridicule because (1) they have a massive advantage in being able to gear defensively because so few stat points need to be spent to make them strong offensively, and (2) because in some cases, like necros, there simply is not enough condition clearing in the game for anyone to effectively counter the class. There is also the issue of condition food, which forces everyone to use +/- duration food just to level the playing field to something that resembles normal.
While conditions need a lot of improvement for group play in all modes of the game, they need a huge effectiveness reduction in the 1v1 department. lowering base condition damage significantly, while allowing them to crit and having those crits effected by ferocity would be a good start.
The whole part here about “no respect” is so true, and it’s something I myself do. I don’t care how great of a player people say someone is, the instant I see them rolling around spamming conditions they’re immediately a nobody to me.
If condition builds required some kind of actual management or something (don’t ask me how) that actually required effort to accomplish it would be a different story. That’s ignoring the issue with the armor stats involved, I’m not even going to touch on that again. In short current state of condi builds puts them to the lowest of respect tiers.
And sure, people are going say “I don’t care I play to win” but just admitting that you want to win proves you want to be better than others. It’s an instinctual desire in any competitive game to want to show off and impress people. Conditions? Not impressive.
No matter how much they nerf the PU build, as long as stealth is involved players will call it OP.
Also, I think it’s a huge mistake to listen to Helseth about anything. When they announced the change he immediately posted something like … Yes I am once again the only mesmer!
That doesn’t seem like someone who is interested in the health of the class.
I think that was meant to be a comment on how Mesmer became vastly more popular when PU was buffed and everyone started playing the spec. Now that PU is “nerfed” maybe they’ll all move on to the next flavor-of-the-month class.
Which, in my opinion, is good for the health of the class.
If you think about a torch, and were designing it for a weapon what would you have it do? Probably burning. And burning in this game limits the weapon to mostly condition builds, which not too many people use, especially on the classes that can use torch.
Also the super popular professions like warrior don’t use torch, so the mesmers/rangers (two of the most rare classes in wvw imo, and maybe engi) have the weapon but only if they run condis. There aren’t too many people that run condi rangers at the moment, and even condi mesmers are pretty rare for the time being, I bet we’ll see a ton more torches after the torment on AA :P.
What game are you playing ‘cause it’s clearly not Guild Wars 2 if you’re saying no one runs conditions. And condi mesmer rare in wvw? Seriously I’d rather play your game instead.
