Overall, I’d say that I enjoyed the event. That being said, I did have some issues:

The lag was horrible initially. I was chilling at Canach’s Folly with a bunch of other players with no issue and then as soon as the event started, the lag started. I got DC’d, lost my place in the event, logged back in only to die, and then had to run back.

Eventually, the lag got better, but it was still present.

The other issue I have is the time for the event. Luckily, I don’t start my new job until later on this month, but if I had been at work, I totally would have missed the event. The whole concept of 1 time only events sounds really cool, but for people who miss out on them it sucks. All I can say in regards to this is thanks for not giving people an achievement for killing the karka boss. I would feel pretty bad for people who couldn’t make it.

Bugged quest chains was another issue.

Another problem I have is with the lore. Even though I did almost all of the quests and read almost all the text, I still don’t quite understand what the Karka are and where they came from. I have even less understanding of the consortium and the fractals of mist dungeon. In the FotM, am I looking at past events? Or am I playing in current events. I honestly have no idea what’s going on.

Thanks for the event, it was fun. Hopefully you guys can have things running a lot more smoothly next time.

Best part is that I dc’d. Reconnected and was in the exact same place as last time, but no longer with my party or the zerg. In fact, the overflow I transferred to hadn’t made it that far. I immediately died. Go to use a waypoint…guess what, I can’t select camp Karka. Now I’m dead, waiting for the zerg to appear, missing out on getting proper credit for the event.

I really like this game, but the lag during events blows. I know I shouldn’t be getting as angry as I am and that this is only the second event they’ve done so far. I just hope that in the future, things are much better because as it stands, my desire to do these events ever again is nil.

Fractal scale issue

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Xfraze.1704

according to the dev blog at https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/leah-rivera-on-the-new-fractals-of-the-mist-dungeon/, the dungeon lvl should scale up to the highest lvl of all players (quote: “The dungeon will remember your progress, and will poll the party’s levels when you enter, scaling the dungeon to the highest common attained level”), but it’s scaling to the lowest lvl of the group, making it close to impossible to get a group of the right lvl, since almost no one wants to repeat the same, and it’s very hard to find ppl of same lvl.

Please fix this asap

According to the part I put in bold, it is working. If I’m at fractal level 4, three other party members are at 3 and the last member is at 1, then the fractal scale is going to be set to 1.

1 is the highest level that’s been attained among all the party members. Basically, it takes a look at the levels available to all the members and sets the fractal scale to the highest one each member has access to.

I did documentation for a software company and it was honestly a nightmare. Half the time a programmer could make something but if you asked them to explain what exactly it did or how it worked in terms a user could understand, they couldn’t. I’d have to wrack my brains trying to explain extremely complicated concepts in sentences that were easy to understand.

I’m not trying to say that it’s excusable not to have everything documented as well as it should be. I’m of the opinion that things should be properly documented BEFORE they get released even if it means the customer has to wait a bit longer….but since I’ve worked for a software company before who is doing the same things ANet is as far as documentation goes (and from seeing how the OTHER game company does it), I guess it’s SOP in the gaming world to release first and document later.

10/7 Update: Buff to guard spawn rate at keeps?

in WvW

Posted by: Xfraze.1704

Xfraze.1704

During a night push, myself and about 5 other players were attempting to take a keep. 2 Guards spawned, then after we killed them, 2 more, and so on and so on. Then some 2 enemy players appeared and next thing we knew, there were like 5 or 6 veteran guards running around wrecking our faces with the two player characters helping them out…with more guards showing up every time we downed one.

Someone was saying that the guards usually didn’t spawn that fast and I posited it might be a “fix” for the nightcapping everyone is complaining about. You know, evening out the difficulty so people who play at night are presented more of a challenge if the other side doesn’t have as many people on the map.

I’m wondering if anyone else has noticed this.

The other idea I mentioned was that the keep had purchased additional guards or something.

Camera and FOV (field of view)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Xfraze.1704

Xfraze.1704

The FOV debate is balance vs. preference.

Letting it be changed means balance suffers, people who choose the warped, fish-eye view will see around corners, etc.

Keeping it the same will mean you will get militant forum posters stating that the FOV is the sole thing which they consider when deciding if they should play a game, and they will try to convince you that everyone they know bases their choices on the same thing too.

Personally, I think balance trumps a few forum threats.

There are people out there who abuse FOV to get an advantage, but there are lot of us who need a higher FOV to play comfortably. The standard for most people tends to be around 90. I’m not sure how this translates for larger monitors, but most games that support FOV will also scale things accordingly to avoid the whole fish eye view you get in extreme cases.

Maybe they can make it so the FOV slider can’t go past a certain point if you’re playing at a certain resolution. There are resolutions that monitors just flat out won’t support, so if you’re playing on a smaller monitor and try to get the FOV higher, it’ll fail because your resolution doesn’t go far enough for the game to allow it.

I’m sure there are ideas out there that can be implemented that will strike a balance between “performance and balance.”

Xfraze.1704

If they widen the FoV for everyone, everyone drops in performance, and those that don’t have the hardware to handle it are SOL.

Then don’t make it the same for everyone, make it a slider.

The argument that it’s unfair to some players who opt not to play with a higher FOV is out the window since people with 3 monitors or custom resolutions from their video card settings can have a higher FOV.

Jon,

Thank you for the game I will playing for the next 10 years.

If you are reading through this thread full of hate and ignorance and you happen to read this post. I hope it restores your faith in humanity.

Peace,

proteininja

I don’t think my post was hateful or ignorant. I find your blanket assumption that the majority of us don’t know what we’re talking about to be ignorant and insulting.

Sickness from FOV is real. ANet thinks that the issue is related to camera smoothing. Maybe their fixing this will correct that particular problem, but I’m not sure it will. As he said “We believe a large number of these cases are not FOV related but rather due to bugs in camera smoothing.” They believe, but they don’t know. It almost sounds like they’re looking at everything that could be the problem but FOV because they don’t want to make any changes to it…not that they can’t.

Besides, the camera smoothing fix does not negate the contradictory nature of his third statement in the OP. People with three monitors have better situational awareness than those without. I’m not saying that I want those people to suddenly lose what they have, but I want to have the option of having it as well, without having to pay for a third monitor.

I am very saddened by this response. Hopefully the camera smoothing corrections will address the headaches and nausea I get from playing the game.

Aside from that, the problem of not seeing as much of the art as I’d like is also a problem for me. Hopefully, changes to the camera angle (if they ever happen) will address this issue as well.

Until then, it looks like any money I would have put into the gem store will most likely go to dramamine and aspirin.

As a side note, I want to point out that this response feels a bit lackluster (not just because it wasn’t what I wanted to here) because of the fact that individuals with a 3 monitor setup have a higher FOV.

It was my experience that even after getting 25 stacks with my staff, when I switched to my GS which had an increaser as well, the buff indicator did not switch out to match with what I had on my GS.

I’m willing to concede that I might be doing it wrong. Do you think you can provide step by step instructions as I’m having trouble understanding what it is you mean.

So best option for Illusion fighters are still stat-charge sigils. “+10 precision each time you kill a foe”.
If you use a GS, you can put precision on scepter, condi on focus, power on trident and toughness on spear. Charge all counters and then use your GS with +250 stats, unless you map-move or are downed.

I tried stacking the stat on kill sigils and it did not work. Basically, the first one to proc was the only one I could continue to prokittenil I died. I had one on my staff and another on my trident. Maybe it was due to the underwater/land differences?

Why Charr Have the Best Story *1-30 Spoilers*

Xfraze.1704

If the writing team handled the editorial duties, does that include making sure that all of the branches a player could choose tied in logically? Only reason I ask is because on the sylvari side, sometimes it seemed like a choice I made in the previous story step or a few story steps back didn’t actually happen from the perspective of the world/dialogue.

Meeting a character a few quests back, then being reintroduced to that character as if we never met….credit for what my character did being given over to another character, etc.

Is there any chance of these issues being reviewed and taken care of later on, or is this a case of “we’re fine with how it is” and then you’ll surreptitiously do better in an expansion?

I can’t describe how sad I am that when I recommend this game to friends have to say “The story is pretty good, but there are issues with how they tied the different choices together,” instead of saying “The story is amazing and they managed to keep things pretty consistent for an mmo,” like I want to.

Clone Aggro

in Mesmer

Posted by: Xfraze.1704

Xfraze.1704

Currently, I’m finding the way aggro works to be extremely puzzling. When I summon a clone (not a phantasm), technically, according to the game mechanics, i should no longer be targeted.

Following this assumption, especially if I’m no longer attacking the mob after wards, I would figure that it would go for my clones.

Most of the time the mob goes for me. I also noticed that a large portion of the time, my phantasms are taken out first, even if I’m doing more damage or there is a lull in their attacks.

I’m not entirely sure that the whole “stop targeting” feature of summoning clones is happening in PvE. I’ve even been attacked while using decoy and under stealth. Clone gets ignored and I’m attacked instead.

The major oddity i’ve seen is when I had 3 wardens up for the entire fight against the centaur boss in CM explorable. For whatever reason, the centaur never attacked my wardens. I kept shattering and bringing em back, but not once did he go for em.

The Prestige might need a little work.

Choices don't matter AT ALL. [From my perspective]

in Personal Story

Posted by: Xfraze.1704

Xfraze.1704

I really love the game, but I’ve lost faith in MMOs providing a consistent narrative for story.

There are a lot of really cool and fun scenes, and as long as I look at it in the context of me not really mattering, it’s all fun and games…but as soon as I start to think that I matter and notice that things I did before aren’t being properly referenced or just plain ignored, it falls apart.

I had a similar problem with SWTOR, but since the enjoyment for that came strictly from the story more than the game mechanics or systems itself, I eventually stopped playing. I really hoped that GW2 would be my fix for a persistent world with a coherent narrative and I’ve been disappointed.

I’m not saying that the writing is bad, each individual scene is really good…but the way it was tied together wasn’t nearly as tight as I was expecting.

Maybe someday this will be fixed…or at the very least, maybe future expansions will do a better job of tightening things up.

This is not good communication with players

Xfraze.1704

I’m still not sure what the “exploits” were. In my runs we did everything legitimately; we just did it as quickly as possible.

As far as I can tell they just lowered the rewards because they got tired of people getting money faster than they wanted them to, which is a major problem in GW2. When pretty things cost 100 gold and when you get to 80, it’s the only thing left to do other than revisiting locations for no real reason, it results in irritated players and a lot of grinding.

I really just wish they would resolve some of this by making it possible to stack currencies to make up for deficiencies in one or the other. Like if I want cultural armor, it’d cost about 110 gold – months of casual play, and even weeks of hardcore dungeon speed runs. If they just made it so that you could also spend karma on them, gather tokens of some kind for them, and even perform a quest chain for some of them… it wouldn’t be such a big problem. As it is, things like this just end up being goals that you won’t achieve for months. The game shouldn’t have things like that. There should be enough content that you can achieve goals in a few days, then move on to a new one.

I’m personally fine with the way progression works. Instead of there being a new goal you have to do every day and then falling behind all the other players, you can steadily work towards the goals in this game since they are all cosmetic in nature. If the exotic gear had better stats within the exotic gear range, then I’d agree with you, we’d need a way to get things faster…but as it currently stands, it’s all about skins. The game gives you enough things to do consistently, you just have to do it a lot.

I’m not trying to say your point isn’t valid though. Obviously what you want out of a game is different than what I want, I just figured I’d put in my two cents to say that I approve of how things currently stand.

Added a system to limit the experience and gold that players can receive from speed-farming dungeons.

Magic Bullet (Pistol #5)
— Sometimes the projectile vanishes and does nothing.

I have had this happen quite a few times and finally noticed the reason. It’s a side effect of how clicking pretty much anywhere to adjust your camera removes your target. I’ve moved my camera to get a view of the field and pressed #5 at the same time. Instead of going to the nearest target that’s in the direction the bullet was fired at, the skill goes off and nothing happens.

I think other people who have experienced this problem have probably done the same thing.

There are two types of illusions. Clones and phantasm’s. Clones aren’t meant to deal a lot of damage and as you put more traits into ones that boost phantasm’s they start to do a lot more.

Their main purpose is to serve as utility in some capacity. The warden isn’t meant to take damage for you either, it reflects ranged attacks. Part of using it is knowing when to drop to down and then doing your best to protect it when the attack it does is on cool down.

Carighan, I would not be against the traits being looked at. Sometimes it feels like something is in the wrong place when I’m looking at the different options which makes picking what would be best counter intuitive.

Sometimes you’re looking at something and think it has great synergy but realize with the point spread it’d be impossible to achieve (which could be intentional).

I’m not sure if every trait line should have something that applies to everything, but I think at the very least, they should be more focused and especially geared toward whatever stat that trait line promotes.

Regarding the shattering 3 phantasms and replacing with 2 more pretty quickly, taking advantage of the fact that newly summoned phantasms attack immediately to replace just-attacked phantasms. Can you not do that -without- shattering anyway? In that case the equation is basically:

3 phantasms attacking over [illusion cooldown time] vs. 2 phantasm attacking over [illusion cooldown time] + shatter(3).

Simplified it is:

1 phantasm attacking over [illusion cooldown time] vs. shatter(3).

Is the shatter(3) actually more damage than a phantasm for a phantasm build over the period of the cooldown (which is about 12 seconds if traited I think)?

So far it’s all theory’s based on gut feelings. Since the combat log doesn’t report phantasm damage (at least it didn’t report my iD), it makes it harder to pull numbers. I don’t even know if the log is contained somewhere that can be viewed outside of the game or what tools to use to get this done. I don’t even know if such an undertaking would be against the ToS

I don’t understand why people are trying to make a straw man argument in a feedback forum. The point of the OP is very clear. Phantasm skills do not go well with the class mechanic. That is not comparable to power builds not going well with condition builds. Comments like “I really start to loathe the mesmer community” are really unwarranted. ArenaNet is more then capable of assessing the feedback correctly, there’s no need to attack the OP on his apparent skill.

Whether or not it’s unwarranted doesn’t make it any less true. The things I read on these forums make me wonder why people are even bothering to play the class. Am I asserting that my opinion is the correct one or any better than theirs? No. For all I know, people who read what I write think to themselves “Man, I’m really starting to dislike this guy.” They probably think I don’t care about the class and don’t want to see it improve.

That’s the thing about arguments on the internet, they’re almost always subjective.

Also, I fail to see how a straw man argument has been made. In a game like this, just to simplify it, either there is something wrong with the mechanics/design, or there is something wrong with the player’s skill. The two aren’t mutually exclusive.

Where some people see a mechanics/design issue, other people are seeing an issue in player skill. By pointing this out, we aren’t necessarily attacking the person in question. I’ve played a lot of games where I thought something was horribly broken or wrong, and then someone more experienced or generally better than me at the game points something out.

Is my saying “This game is broken for X reason” and then them telling me “Nothing is wrong, you just need to do this/learn to play better (and then being told how I could get better)” a straw man argument?

A lot of the frustration comes from the fact that some people are genuinely trying to help other people with very insightful suggestions but they just get ignored.

A lot of this is compounded by the fact that there are no hard numbers in these arguments. It’s almost entirely based on stuff people observed at one point and based on their feelings alone. There are no charts or graphs showing what is actually more effective rotation/skill wise, etc. Some of this is probably due to ANet’s design philosophy for the game.

What makes that even MORE frustrating is the fact that ANet has been pretty open on their design philosophy from the get-go and people are still whining.

Not everything is a straw man argument and I can easily counter that by you going around accusing everyone of making one, you’re in turn doing it yourself. Accusing other people of using them in an attempt to lessen the impact of their argument.

This is actually the thing that bothers me. It seems that people are upset they can’t do both shatter builds AND having Phantasm-afk at the same time. If an Elementalist said he wanted to be able to burst people down from 100% to 0 like a Thief, AND also do top-tier condition damage, AND have survivability, AND receive daily massages from their favourite gosh darned masseuse, you’d say they were being unreasonable.

So ask yourself, why would that be any different than saying “Hey, I want to be able to have constant, high damage from all my Phantasms and I also want to have zero opportunity or damage costs on these abilities that are clearly scaled to have a cost to them vis-a-vis clone/Phantasm death. I also want a pony.” It doesn’t work that way. These are very strong effects (Guardian’s can help their allies block 1 attack on a high CD. Mesmers can become completely invulnerable for 3-4 seconds) and the cost in Phantasms/Clones is the price they come with. If you don’t think their worth it, you aren’t using them right or you have a beef with the multipliers/numbers involved.

Thank you for putting into words what I’ve been trying to say and probably failing at for a very long time. People want everything and then some.

I really need to stop visiting the forums, I’ve spent more time on here than actually playing and I’m starting to loathe the mesmer community, something I really don’t want to do as I’d much rather treat every one nicely rather than become jaded and bitter.

I would love to see the pistol as a main hand if it could be worked in a way that is logical. TBH though, when I first heard about the mesmer and the fact there would be pistols in the game, I had a nergasm because the thought of wielding two pistols or a sword and a pistol seemed so awesome to me.

Even though I am content with the sword/pistol set up, it is human nature to want more. I wouldn’t mind if the scepter was replaced with the pistol but it had the same skills. The confusion skill could even be renamed suppressive fire and the tooltip could read “unloads the pistol in a barrage of bullets causing confusion”

It’s not that I want more skills, I just want the image of my mesmer wielding two pistols.

That being said, I don’t support the idea of transmutation stones making a weapon look like a different one (with all thekittenpirate leather I get in instances though, I kinda wish I could do that for armor -_-). Being able to tell what weapon a person has out at a glance is far too useful/integral to the overall balance of the game.

Hmm… I’m perhaps the only one about to go off on a random tangent completely unrelated to the current topic at hand…
But. If the guide that I haven’t seen yet is as good as you all say it is… and the gentleman who developed it happens to go by Mr. Prometheus on the forums…
Has no one else found his name to be very fitting?
Prometheus (in Greek mythology), being the wisest titan, was charged with making man, and then does the forbidden and gives man fire on top of that, then gets punished for it.
He is giving fire to you all, use it for good! (If the videos are that good, as again, I haven’t watched them.)

(Also, Mesmers have torches. o.o)

TL;DR: Prometheus is a fitting name if he’s sharing fire with us mere mortals.

I predict he gets a job at ANet. Unfortunately, the success of GW2 makes ANet “go corporate” and MrPrometheus just can’t keep up with the times. Despite his best attempts to keep the game true to it’s roots and all the classes too, as well as effectively communicate with us what’s going on, it all fails. In the end, he gets word of something big that will negatively impact the community and shares it with us. As a result he gets fired and blacklisted from the industry.

in Mesmer

Posted by: Xfraze.1704

Xfraze.1704

There’s so much nonsense being spoken about the Shatter mechanic. It seems to be coming from people who want to play “lazy” with the Mesmer and keep up Phantasms for DPS.

Wouldn’t people who are lazy want to keep things the way they are? They would be able to do plenty of damage and have plenty of utility using their phantasms.

I’m afraid you’re making a straw man argument which doesn’t make much sense. Most people want to decrease the phantasm DPS and make it more compatible with other mechanics. If you disagree that is fine, but posting how good you are and how bad everyone else is does not add anything to this forum meant for feedback.

The feeling I got from people who don’t like the current shatter system is that they think phantasm’s are too good to bother using shatter as it reduces your overall effectiveness. Whether this means making phantasm’s weaker (something that should not be done imo) or making the shatter mechanic attractive in some way (effectiveness increased by shattering phantasm’s instead of clones or some other change), I think it is a good indicator of people either being lazy or not flexible in their chosen play style.

If you want to get 3 phantasm’s up, the game will certainly let you do that, but if it causes you to underutilized other aspects of the class you can really only blame yourself.

If the prospect of pure damage is more attractive to you than some of the more utility oriented spells and abilities mesmer’s have, then again, nothing stops you from going that route as far as you possibly can. To complain afterwards that you’d like abilities other people traited for in a playstyle completely counter to the one picked isn’t really fair.

Not to mention the fact that even with a heavy phantasm build there is plenty of opportunity for shatters if you are smart about it implies to me that people aren’t really trying. They just want whatever it is they want without bothering to work for it.

And I’m not talking about genuine improvements and bug fixes, I pretty much mean all the stuff going around about overhauling the system or how it’s flawed, etc. If your play style doesn’t work well with the shatter system, or rather, the shatter system doesn’t work well with how you want to play the class…then maybe instead of the class being inherently broken and in dire need of a rework, a different class should be considered.

Seeing as how most of what is being bandied around is purely subjective with little to no “hard evidence”, it’s very easy to accuse people of making straw man arguments. Even what I just said could be construed as an attack on people who think the shatter mechanic needs to be reworked.

Maybe as more time passes and more data accumulates ANet will be able to tell us if the shatter system is being used as they envisioned it as well as the phantasm’s. In the end, it’s their vision we’re playing around with and while our input is appreciated to a certain extent and we can conjecture whatever it is they had intended, they have the final say.

I hate to bring this up, but the last thing I want to see is the Mesmer to go the path of the Warlock in WoW. I loved that class to death, but as time went by it basically became a mage that shot fire and shadow. DoTs were slowly nerfed to the ground bit by bit the utility spells we were given became inconsequential.

I don’t want to see the Mesmer turn into a weaker version of an elementalist with purple magic or a carbon copy of a necro with an army of purple minions. I wish people would take the time to try and work with the class instead of try to fundamentally change it so it plays the way they want it to play.

Thanks for the explanations of the skill. I’ve been using it a lot with mixed results and I think what you’ve (EasymodeX/True Seeker) said will help me use it more effectively.

Speaking of the focus ability, does it suck enemies out in the direction the arrow is pointing when it’s placed? Is there an easier way to manipulate the direction it’s going? From what I observed, if it’s in front of your character, the arrow faces forward, if behind, the arrow goes back.

I usually have to run up close to an enemy, place the marker behind me, then activate the skill, then the enemy gets sucked away.

Further complicating it is the fact that it appears depending on how close the enemy is to the line, the further they get pushed through which can make using it effectively a little hard.

Do I need to practice more, or am I just doing it wrong?

Phantasm or Mind Wrack ?

Honestly I think the phantasms are generally better.

If you get the timing down right, you’ll do more damage with phantasms AND shattering.

Place holder vendors?

So I’ve noticed that there are lot of named NPC karma vendors who sell the same exact stuff, many times not even 2 feet from each other. Then there is the whole black market in LA with the NPCs who run it giving a spiel about being able to get anything you want, etc.

Does anyone think this is all there for flavor, or is ANet going to be beefing up the items available at these vendors at some point with some variety between them? Currently, it all feels a little lackluster.

I mean, how cool would it be to go to the black market and be able to buy outfits or gimmick items with gold or karma, I was half expecting that only to find out that instead I could buy ginger, basil, or that other cooking item. And alcohol, can’t forget the alcohol.

Do you guys think phantasms/illusions persisting after an enemy dies is necessary?

I don’t think there needs to be a change to mantras at all. You charge em and use em, and there are traits that make them a lot more powerful then they are initially.

The warden is all about positioning. I hate when I get it set up just right and someone knocks the mob away or pulls it away from the warden. Then I have to figure out some way to bring it back, assuming those abilities aren’t on cooldown.

I ran CM explorable and didn’t feel like I was kittening my party. Is it possible that an ineffective trait set up was being used?

Half the time when I use the prestige, the stealth effect doesn’t happen. Am I doing something wrong? Usually I pop it and am moving around, but I’m not using other abilities in between.

Keeping phantasms is better than shattering, how do you know?

As a side note, I think I now have my answer as to why people think phantasm’s are more useful if you don’t shatter them. I’m wondering how many other people were like me and didn’t realize that the damage numbers being displayed were stacked for certain abilities.

I never really thought phantasm’s were better off not shattered, but this explains a bit.

Diversion needs to add more time on the stun per illusion destroyed.

Distortion I wish it had a secondary effect. Maybe an aoe blind.

There is a trait that gives distortion a reflect against ranged attacks.

At this point, I think we can safely conclude that the scrolling combat text behaves differently depending on the ability used. If what I posted isn’t considered actual proof, then please test it out yourselves for those of you who don’t believe. That being said, if the thread continues in this direction it will no doubt be locked.
