Which runes to use for chrono wvw roaming?

I have full zerker gear (armour, weapons, trinkets). I used to run Traveler runes but since the Chronomancer has the passive movespeed trait, which runes are better for the standard shatter build? Runes of the Pack? Runes of the Ranger? Strength is a little pricey, so if there are some budget alternatives that would be great to know.

On Runes of the Ranger, does the 7% damage apply on activated shatters? e.g. 3 clones out, it should do 7% more damage as long as 1 close is still alive?

I would love to see some more wvw videos, particularly against condition classes. I have tried playing mace with a guardian in wvw but I get kited easily by condition engineers, PU mesmers (sometimes you gotta fight them, like holding a camp), and p/d thieves. Those fights always end up the same way – I’m loaded with conditions while they run around taking pot shots.

I’ve been running a condition build in WvW for some time, with moderate success, but there are a few builds/classes that I have trouble dealing with. I know that there will be counters to the build I run – what I’m looking for is for suggestions on how I can tweak my build to reduce their effect, and playstyle suggestions.

1) I have some trouble with condition builds. Necros are a pain to fight because of the number of conditions they unload. P/D condition thieves are also a problem. I think I need more condition removal other than HT’s burst. If anyone has suggestions on dealing with this, please let me know.

2) Rangers. Yes I have trouble with rangers. Their 1500 longbow range is pretty far and the shots hurt. I usually end up getting kited (no stability, knockback shot has no animation, stealth shot has no animation, canines suck).

3) My runeset. I got perplexity runes a while back near the time they first came out (and were ridiculously OP). Since then they’ve undergone a few nerfs, but gw2spidy has them selling for 8-9 gold per piece. For perspective, I bought them at 1-2 gold per piece. Is perplexity still the best for condition builds? I was thinking of replacing them with antitoxin runes for the reduction in condition duration, but I’m not sure if that is the best option for my build.

Someone on the first page said to inform us, the player base, of future plans with respect to progression. I could not agree more. I would not be pumping cash into the game via micro transactions if there are plans for higher tiers. Of course, it makes business sense to keep such plans hidden, but it comes down to how much Arenanet values goodwill.

My view is that ascended gear contradicts the other developer posts with respect to build diversity. The fact that the developers have the audacity to mention build diversity in balance patches is appalling, when the severely time and gold-gated ascended gears pigeonholes players into one build.

Maximised Hybrid Phantasm Build [Roaming]

Just weighing in to say that this is the most successful roaming build I’ve come across, for me personally (tried Osicat’s shattercat and the PU condition mesmer). I have a few questions on build specifics:

1) Condition duration food. The only condition being applied is bleed and I feel like that gets cleansed fairly regularly. Would it be more beneficial to go for condition damage food instead? i.e. bigger tick for shorter time?

2) Is it worth running condition duration reduction food? Or is the defensive boost a poor trade-off for the damage foregone?

3) Burst thieves – how to deal with them (the D/D variety)? They tend to just stealth off my clones/phantasms until I am out of stealth, and then steal -> CnD -> backstab -> 2222.

Number 3 is my biggest headache now, actually. Insights greatly appreciated.

Edit: given the new healing skills, Necro signet of vampirism heals for about 300 per attack with ICD of 1sec. Clones do no damage but they still “hit”, so essentially this build will give necros a 300hp/sec regen. It essentially negates all the bleed damage. Wat do?

Roaming help

For WvW. Sorry for the long post.

I was hoping to get some insight on how to roam better on my mesmer. In short, I’m just confused as to what I need to do – how to initiate, what to shatter when, etc. I have no idea what I’m doing.

Here’s what usually happens:
- Spot an enemy. Bonus if he’s alone. Drop entry portal (for fast gtfo)
- iWarden on the guy, then focus 4 in front of warden.
- Pull the guy to warden, dodge, then sword clone and burst combo with Sword 2 and F1 shatter.
- kite around with staff and try not to die for the next 20 seconds so I can try it again.
- portal out if I can.
- Die to burst or run away; no kill either way

Thieves are especially troublesome. I played a thief initially in wvw (because stealth, so easy to run away) so I know all the D/D, D/P, and S/D tricks. I feel like knowing the thief combo doesn’t help because after avoiding the initial burst, it’s back to 7k stabby-stabby after 3 seconds. (I linked my thief build below. D/P seems to be the meta and I wouldn’t be surprised if all the thieves I meet are running that. That burst…and survivability…)

Not a thief QQ post. Obviously the good mesmers snack on thieves (I’ve seen the videos). What can I do/change to be one of those mesmers, in addition to just more practise? i.e. change weapon types, change equipment, etc? Open to all suggestions! I just want to roam on my mesmer without going 0/10 and getting frustrated back to EB zerging.

I am using Osicat’s Shatter Cat Mist build, or something similar (may not have the exact type of gear. Major difference is 20 in domination instead of Chaos).

Those who feel that Arenanet “Lied” need to realize that their opinion of what a grindy game is, is different then what Arenanet, and many players, opinion of what a grindy game is.

For what it’s worth, at least the leveling curve in GW2 is flat. I have played crazy Asian MMOs where the amount of XP needed from one level to the next is exponential.

I think most players are unhappy with the fact that there is a huge time commitment required to get the ascended weapons. The time commitment doesn’t come in the form of # of hours required (although a significant component), but the fact that it would take weeks of crafting to fully gear out one toon.

For example, my WvW mesmer uses a sword, focus and staff. Assuming I get no weapon drops, and my progress is gated only by the daily crafting limit (i.e. no shortage of crafting materials), it would take 6 weeks before I have all the weapons I need. Any day where I don’t log in to craft is a day lost, for good; progress can’t be made up on the weekend. When a game has a zero-sum component to it, it becomes a chore rather than an enjoyable past-time.

I know I don’t have to log in daily, or that maybe it doesn’t take a long time to refine 1 ecto, but the fact is that at some point in my day I need to get on GW2 or I delay my progress.

No its spoken like a player who knows the real meat behind WvW. You can play is as an open world PvP but your not going to help your world out by doing so. WvW is about movements as a team. If any thing your coming off as the type of player who “does there own thing” in WvW or you know a “rally bot” player.

There are many facets to WvW. My guild sometimes likes to get a raiding party together and take all the camps on a borderland, slapping yaks along the way. Ever try defending a keep without supply coming in?

For a min/maxer sure, but for a normal player who wants to do dungeons, WvW, etc they don’t need that.

WvW isn’t just about zergs you know. I couldn’t care less about ascended gear if it didn’t affect wvw. Have fun being hit by a glass rifle warrior for 20K damage via killshot, because it will happen (my thief with 14k HP and 2600 armour was insta-downed once by said rifle warriors, and this was only with ascended rings and the backpiece).

The time-constrained nature of ascended weapon acquisition is even worse. It is 100% spending 2 weeks getting ready to have fun, vs having fun itself.

They likely realized that playerbase was shrinking as people finished milestones. For example, people who have a legendary may be looking for something else to do (to that effect, I recommend going after the Yakslapper achievement. Look it up).

Nevertheless, I feel like time-gated item acquisition is a poor way to get people to log in daily. Personally, I now regard playing gw2 as a daily chore as opposed to having fun, because I have to (as a mostly WvW roamer and occasional zergling):
- refine ectos once
- zerg towers in EB
- zerg towers in borderlands 1
- zerg towers in borderlands 2
- zerg towers in borderlands 3

If I don’t do these things, I fall behind as a result of time-gated item progression.

Originally I had wanted a confusion nerf, just to spite the mesmers who complained about thief burst, but build diversity makes WvW more entertaining. The game is not fun when each class only has one or two viable builds. Be careful what you wish for, I guess.

have to buy whole new set of gear, and refarm to get ascended gear!

I agree with this person here. It makes my blood boil when developer actions make gear/items obsolete.

The second thing that needs to be remembered is that WvW is not sPvP. If you want to have 1v1 – 5v5 fights that is what sPvP is for.

I wish more people understood this. I don’t understand why players insist on having small group fights in WvW when the PvP style was clearly meant to be large-scale.

Personally, i use glyph of elemental harmony while attuned to air followed by shocking aura. With 70% boon duration it gives you 17 + 8.5s of swiftness on 25s cd both skills. Then i switch to water (pop frost aura if active) and after 10s again to air to keep it up.

Since I am on a roll with questions: Is glyph what most eles run for a heal? I have ether renewal as a heal for the extra condition removal (and short cooldown). But 3 sec cast time leaves this ripe for interruption (after fighting D/D thieves I am constantly on the lookout for that blue glow). If I had 800-1000 healing power like Lert I’d use Signet of Restoration

Toughness or Vitality?

Currently I’m running a d/p s/d build for wvw and can’t really decide what gear to use.

I have taken shadow’s embrace as a trait for condition removal so I was leaning towards toughness for damage reduction but I also want to run dungeons and I heard vitality is preferred over toughness in dungeons. So I’m kinda stuck on what to do.

I’m mostly undecided for what ascended jewellery to pick as they require much more time to acquire. So advice on which items provide best stats for both pve and wvw would be much appreciated.

Uhm, whoever moved this. This was specifically about AoE limits for WvW, that’s why it was created there. PvE is a different issue.

This isn’t strictly a WvW issue. The developers treat WvW as an extension of PvE (that’s why you use PvE gear and skills behave the same as they do in PvE). Consider the aoe cap from an orr farming perspective:

- Certain classes have weak tagging ability (I’m looking at you, mesmers). If you allowed AoE to hit everything in range then those classes are at an inherent disadvantage. You’d be creating a divide between PvP and PvE professions where none previously existed.
- Uncapping the aoe limit means farming for mats just became that much more efficient. You’re going to see the bots come back in force, except as staff elementalists instead of bear rangers.

Just a couple of points off the top of my head as to why the cap needs to stay.

I am for the removal of the AoE cap and have stayed consistent in saying it wouldnt remove zerging. The benefits/drawbacks to different systemic implementations is what some of us are discussing.

Much as one shouldnt generalize an entire server, one shouldnt generalize an entire viewpoint.

Touché. Nevertheless I still feel that the discussion centers around how the implementation would work in a WvW context. From a PvE perspective uncapping aoe would trivialize a lot of content (defense missions in dungeons come to mind, such as CoF P3).

This guy gets it. My opinions are exactly that, my own. If you generalize a server based on the comments of one member I hate to see how you behave in real life.

The argument was always about breaking up zergs. OP disliked the zerg mentality and suggested uncapping aoe as a way to dissuade such behavior. My response to OP and like-minded people was that there are alternatives to PvP without 20 other people and he should open his eyes and find out what they are.

Again, this thread is about zerging. If you guys truly feel that aoe cap is limiting, post it in the Guild Wars 2 General Discussion subform.

Only time this happened for me was the weekend after the WvW patch when all three servers decided to try for SM. Except I was also stuck in a wall which was far more annoying than being unable to activate utilities.

The problem is that numbers right now are not just a viable tactic, but the ONLY real tactic as very few things can break up a huge zerg…I would argue that really only another zerg can do that. Really dumbs down WvW a lot.

Yes, the only tactic to deal with a zerg is with another zerg, and that’s just the way it should be. I don’t understand why everyone wants to be Rambo and take on five or 10 enemies at once and win. WvW is numbers and coverage. Do not try to change WvW into a PvE version of sPvP, because sPvP already exists for those who only want to fight five or fewer people.

I would also like to point out that those who clamour for guild vs. guild are essentially asking for organized zerg vs. zerg. I didn’t realize that massing with people from the same guild is distinct from massing with people of different guilds.

The fact that this thread is showing up in the WvW subforum tells me its the “zergs must go” argument rearing its ugly head in another form. If anyone truly feels the AoE cap should be removed, post your thoughts in the GW2 Discussions subforum. This is a change that affects all players, PvE and WvW alike.

I am okay with the zerging. On T4 and below (hint: get out of the T1/2 zergfests), servers can’t maintain 30+ people on more than one map. If you don’t like the zerg, go to a different map. I think it’s foolish to introduce mechanics which allow a group of 5 to take out a group of 15. Numbers are always a viable tactic. All I see is a bunch of people who don’t like the meta for WvW and want the game mechanics changed to suit their purposes.

When you guys say perma swiftness, are you talking about consistent 100% uptime of swiftness (like on a warrior)? Or is it more like being able to get swiftness up again quickly but there are still periods of slow times?

Right now I’m getting swiftness from shocking and frost auras, and when I switch to the air attunement. But between cooldowns on skills and attunements I can’t maintain permanent upkeep of swiftness. Unless you guys are talking about perma boons while in combat (like fire aura which we can’t get without a target for the Earth 3 skill).

Ultimately my goal is to provide some group utility when I party with two or three other people. I’m not too concerned with killing people while solo (I have a thief for that purpose). The ability to run away successfully is probably the most important solo trait for me.

I think way points need to go.

On waypoints – if no one on your server pays money to upgrade a keep to get a waypoint, then you don’t have it for map completion right? This is the one reason why I think WP’s should go.

I thoroughly enjoy running around tagging towers and keeps. This is how I find small group fights in WvW. Otherwise we’d be zerg balling all day. I like my zergs when I want some loot bags but it gets boring.

Edit: Just noticed your bad trinket choice – cavalier. Jewel to trinkets is great if you’re going rather for attack, but trinkets themselves not. I’d choose either soldier or knight.
Count it yourself. Jewel to trinkets – 25/15/3dmg (1 critical damage = 5 stats)
Trinkets – 67/48/3dmg (1 c. dmg = 16 stats).

Those are actually placeholders until I get 7 more pristine relics for the celestial rings (can’t buy any yet until I’m sure they don’t drop. I got RROD for my thief with relics and 2 daily chests later another one drops).

Another question, since I’m asking – how much vitality do most eles run? I always feel like there’s a psychological component with running a lower vit number because when you heal, your bar fills up completely and it discourages your opponents. Maybe this is a dumb reason.

My guildmate used to wvw with a mini quaggan pet. I scolded her for not putting it away since it followed her in stealth. Maybe I’ll tell her to take it out again to trick people into thinking the pro thief transferred to SBI.

Also, anyone got vids of this guy? I have seen him mentioned a few times now.

I can QQ too. Personally I want to see confusion nerfed to 1/2 damage in wvw just like in sPvP. Can we also nerf ele regen and put a big ole 30-sec CD on RTL? And since nobody likes stealth stomps, interaction with a downed player (i.e. stomping) should automatically cancel stability, endure pain, distortion and mist form as well. Also remove the Norn’s Snow Leopard elite – it’s not fair that a warrior can stealth using that skill.

lately it seems that no one wants to stick around and fight. Most people seem more interested in just getting back to the safety of numbers & tagging enemies

Gotta bait people out. Poking towers/keeps is the best way to draw out some scouts. Generally these will be experienced WvW players because the new ones don’t go scouting. Keep an escape ready and let the guards knock you around for a bit. Most people are likely to close in for a kill. Or maybe it’s because I play a thief and nobody likes us.

I wish some commanders had better common sense, and if they see SBI or CD attacking Mag, then don’t attack each other, join in and destroy Mag from the other side! But nope, when CD is invading Mag (and this is on EB) then SBI takes offence because we are not giving them any attention and comes to steal our camps and towers. (And we do the same thing), which makes no sense, strategically, it only causes them to own us both even more.

It does make sense strategically, I think. Neither of our servers has the clout to take down Magoomba so we both try for second. We do this on SBI by taking CD’s stuff whenever you’re occupied with Maguuma. Our scores have been close lately for this reason. Of course, this works greatly in Maguuma’s favour. Me, personally, I just enjoy the fights since my (new) PC can finally handle wvw (and Tomb Raider with TressFX ). I have the good fortune to play during NA primetime when all of our zergs are evenly matched.

If gw2 could be modded I would change ever Maguuma invader toon to this:

Maybe it was me not having the proper mindset. I wanted to try this in WvW too, but meh, can’t seem to convince myself it would be viable ish. I’ll tweek my head around it in sPvP some more first.

They nerfed caltrops but buffed dodgetrops. I think this is an overall nerf to the build since caltrops were significantly better.This build would become much more deadly if the dodgetrops trait procced on evades instead of just dodges.

However I don’t think this would be viable in WvW because fights take place in more open environments (less chance for someone to step in your caltrops). Also, you need a good escape which D/D on both sets just doesn’t offer. I actually considered this build for WvW (bought a full set of adventurer runes and 2x energy sigils), but ultimately decided against it. Like OP said, it’s for sPvP and contesting points.

Crystal Desert really worked hard this weekend, and the three way fight on SMC was AMAZING. I hope players keep pouring in so we can keep the momentum going.

Sad part, we might be stuck against Mag and SBI for longer :/

I think CD and SBI are rather evenly matched. You have better coverage but we have the bigger zerg during NA primetime.

Channeled abilities through Stealth?

I’ve noticed fighting experienced people that they usually have a good idea of where you are in stealth. They don’t need a channelled attack to track you.

You can always restealth after the channel ends if you wanted to. Also, don’t forget that even though the channelled attack is tracking you, your opponent still needs to reselect your toon after you come out of stealth to target you again.

I would rather ANet fix the wonky pathing of Flanking Strike and get rid of some useless skills that nobody uses, like Vital Shot (Pistol 2) and Dancing Dagger (Dagger 4).

Disagree on the YB part. When we were facing TC and YB, I’ve had YB groups camp the borderlands JP on our own borderlands. My guild leader rounded up a few other necros and had some fun fearing them.

TC is a classy act though. Bows all around in small group fights.

Most people seriously don’t build tanky for WvW? Seriously? I don’t even know what to think.

There are two extremes you’ll usually see, the Beserker and the Bunker; the former’s goal is to DPS you down before you can get many hits in, and the latter is to be as unkillable as possible (though they can’t kill you either).

I’d say 60-70% of players focus on Power/Damage in WvW, i.e. the former.

When I first started out in WvW, I was told to go glass because when two zergs collide even tanky armour can’t save you. The other argument I heard was that by staying in the middle of a zerg you’re safe from aoe so being glassy is better.

No. You’re able to move while firing the shot.

Nice. I remember I used to burn Shadowstep to make sure I was within 600 units and then hit Shadowshot. Gotta account for the extra second of distance gain my target got when I was rooted =\

Some thieves don’t use withdraw because it messes with their positioning. But I use it for the same reasons that you do – free evasion, fast cooldown. What I noticed about immobilize is that it gets cleansed on heal, so you dodge in place until your heal fires.

Use infiltrator’s signet. Allows you to black powder -> HS -> backstab -> autoattack chain, repeat. It also provides as stun breaker, shadowstep and has lower CD than shadowstep. In this build infiltrator is definetely better than shadowste (though I love shadowstep).

I think Shadowstep is a necessary utility for OP if he’s running D/D and D/P. Infiltrator’s signet needs a target for the shadowstep to activate, and if OP is in a bad spot I don’t think he wants to stun break into the middle of the enemy pack. You can get away with Infiltrator’s Signet because you have shortbow as an alternate weapon set to put some distance between yourself and a fight.

I run D/P and S/D with the same traits you do. Shadowstep is a must for escapes when both weapon sets are melee. Shadowstep -> run around for a few seconds and let your pursuers chase -> black powder -> shadow return -> gtfo

1vX or small group fights – none of the buffs matter.

Most of the time I die 1vX is because a Guard is hitting me. Of course, I’m not even going to bother spending any of my rank points until they add more stuff, but that’s just my 2 cents on that.

I agree that it does help, but I don’t believe it matters in the sense that if someone couldn’t fight an NPC guard and an enemy player before, getting a 5% damage reduction bonus won’t change that. Nevertheless I should qualify my statement to say that “buffs do not make a material difference in 1vX fights.”

As a quick aside, picking the location for your fights is just as important as knowing your class/opponent’s class/build etc. For example, when I face an X/D thief, I lead the fight away from areas with mobs. If the NPC guards are a nuisance, moving away from their aggro range solves that problem. Most people get tunnel vision and will chase you.

I don’t see why this is an issue. Half the time I want to get on a piece of siege it’s already taken (any siege, not just ballistas and cannons). It’s not like they buffed WvW so you need the buffs to remain competitive.

Zerg fights – balling up and sticking to a commander with good leadership (numbers also help) wins the fights.
1vX or small group fights – none of the buffs matter.

I’m having some issues with stat allocation/optimization. I’m not sure what most D/D eles run in WvW but right now I’m sitting at 16.5k HP, 2600 armour, and 1950 power. I’ve tried a few different stat combinations but I wasn’t able to move 50 vitality to power (i.e. trading off 500 HP for an additional 50 power) while maintaining 2600 armour. I was hoping some experienced players/theory crafters could help out. Also, if I’m totally barking up the wrong tree in terms of how this build is going, let me know!

Some background info, of no particular importance:
Normally, I run a thief in WvW and I thoroughly enjoy the gameplay. But thieves have pretty poor group utility and I feel like a kitten chilling in stealth bursting people while my team gets focused. I also feel bad when I end up surviving an encounter due to hiding in stealth while my party gets destroyed. Ergo, I wish to be a better team player by buzzing around as an annoying D/D ele.

We had a queue for EB last night on SBI. I was so happy.

I hope SBI keeps the numbers up. Running 60 mags into 60 SBI on SBI bl was fun.

I hope so too. Back in T5 when we were having our way with DR and IoJ we had queues in EB and the borderlands. I know we have the numbers. Just because we are behind in points doesn’t mean we can’t fill up the maps during NA primetime and have some good fights.

On another note, my mostly PvE guild is starting to branch out into WvW. First guild WvW event on Friday
