My personal opinion on fighting DE’s over that weekend was they have stupid ranged damage. Legit broken with the numbers they put out. Is that viable in highly organized PvP tournaments? I’m not the one to say, but I can say it’s viable in ranked queue.

One of the things we don’t know is how the entire meta will pan out b/c it’s too early to tell. We have to wait for the player base to fully get their hands on the xpac and develop new builds. Once this happens the Meta will pan out and you can subjectively judge where DE stands.

Because the top meta thief build haven’t changed since 2014, i’m not gonna create a build that is weaker just to be innovative. However if you look at minor tweaks everyone has followed what I have picked, since HoT start until now being sigils and runes.

Also I’m purely talking about the 5v5 tourney aspect about DE being viable, I couldn’t care any less about ranked, hell you can play S/D power and reach top10 in EU then you can literally play anything.

Check it mate I’m not flaming you just stating that you haven’t ever been the innovator of thief builds. I can readily admit I haven’t been the innovator of Mesmer builds too. Even your boy Helseth doesn’t innovate. It’s not a bad thing just some people do it better than others.

That being said I agree with you on DE in organized 5v5. I just differ as I don’t know what the rest of PoF is bringing to the table. It might be that DD mobility isn’t needed and the extremely high single target burst of DE is. We don’t know yet.

Look at s/d condi now. Again that’s some really smart innovation to use a predominately power build w/ zero condi application as a condi load out. The fella who created bunker rev. Another example albeit a different class, but none the less that fella really created a nice build.

Look that’s you failing to innovate. Watch Caed’s video on DE compared to yours and you’ll see the truth of the matter.

I never said NONE of the innovation comes from ex ESL players I said MANY of them don’t innovate. If I remember correctly Helseth didn’t create the bunker mesmer. I don’t think he even started playing until he had too.

There is 0 reason to innovate a build as long as it cannot replace drd dp dash in terms of being more optimal. Do you comprehend? If you don’t understand this, there is nothing to discuss.

Just a reminder, ATs are the only “5v5” gamemode in the game currently and even that isnt played by that many people, so who cares if DE is or is not viable there if 99% of time you are solo/duo queing ranked ? so with that in mind:
1) Will be DE viable in sPvP? – YES
2) will it be the best spec ? – probably NO , but who cares if you enjoy playing it
3) Will DE be viable in WvW? – Hell yes
4) Will DE be viable in PvE? – Yes, rifle probably wont be best choice mainly in raids, but that does not matter at all, everywhere else in PvE you will be able to play Rifle

So conclusion is: DE will be viable spec, period.

Sure lad, who are you to say people don’t care about them? AT’s have good rewards and I’m sure there are players who are interested in beating us in them. Besides idk if you watched but they actually lost the AT day before so helseth and mancow didn’t have enough QP for monthly.

No, actually it’s the same with all thieves I’ve encountered recently. You can’t hit them unless you use a port – like D/P 3.

Sindrener: It has got nothing to do with D/P, but all thieves I’ve encountered since Feb 2015 were, with a few exception D/P. The very bug I’m talking about is in game since Feb 2015 – I guess that was before the teleport bug and has got something to do with the evade frame of thief.

I could make a video and I probably will, depending how much it bugs me, although I know you guys still wouldn’t believe me.
But for that I have to create a channel again, get vegas somewhere and so on.

I just tested it: there’s no way I can time CnD + steal to hit a thief – and not all of them are really dodging or porting. I can hit a running warrior without problems though.

Sorry for necroing. Try it yourselves, you probably come to the same conclusion. And this very issue becomes less of an issue depending how many tools you’ve got.

ETA: Actually it would be great would you guys make as many 1 vs 1 videos as you can. Haven’t seen any in ages. Especially not thief vs thief.

Probably you both felt the new specs were garbage in comparison vs HoT specs which may be true but again who knows maybe someone make a strong and make it viable, maybe some team make work mirage/de and be successful with it.

Nobody is saying they will replace or be better than old specs or that a team will win WTS with them but they could work, who knows. You both need you chill out a bit.

As i said on another forum post, rifle is obviously not something I wished for as a thief main since the play style isn’t something I enjoy nor feel has a place in pvp it’s more orientated into wvw IMO. I would rather had a 1v1 blade master S/S type of game play but that’s me. And as i said i’m beyond bored of all HoT specs and the meta and would love for it to be gone and of course i’m disappointed, I do hope lots of the feedback comes through from the forum post about clunkyness and stolen abilities getting tweaked up and some things not working unless you have a rifle(malice getting applied quicker being first thing that comes into my mind)

Hell I would love for scrapper/DRD/Chrono(all HoT specs) to get nerfed to the ground to unplayable so we get to play something else, I love all the new stuff as I also said on stream. Mirage/Holo/Scourge but as long as DRD stays as strong as it is I won’t play something that is weaker just to lose same goes for DE

I understand where your frustration comes from I guess we all are extremely boring with HoT specs and I get that rifle thief is not something everybody likes ( I don’t either) but I think you as a pro player has to be a bit more cautious in what you say because most people take it too seriously, but you’re right DrD will problaly remove any DE build heck any PoF build tbh, it is just too strong right now.

Being said that and also taking into consideration what you just said, what would you do as a dev? nerf DrD? (dash/pi) buff DE (less clunky more variety).
Imagine someone comes with a good DE build but can’t make it work because DrD eats it, unless they buff DE to a certain extent it will never be meta/viable only for the fact DrD will be there to destroy it.

1. I mean nerfing DrD to make it unplayable would also make Mirage instantly more viable in terms of 5v5 gameplay, just compare a DrD/Mirage(Jaunt) vs DrD/Chrono(Moa) opening, you can’t even compare. Would also make other builds more viable again because you suddenly have same classes with the same mobility (rifle thief even with sb you are not that much quicker then others, rev being one for example)

2. Cautious in what way? DE remains unviable in my eyes as long as all the HoT Specs exist, there is two specs of the new ones I can see reaching the meta and that is holosmith (Zan is doing some insane work here, can even beat/do very good vs helseth/mishas chrono) and Scourge seems absolutely crazy and I love the visuals even if they are too much.

3. DE needs to get rid of the clunkyness of kneeling, DE mark instant revamp the stolen abilities, they can’t compare to the core thief ones like they are a joke in comparison. One example is adding maybe something unblockable? Also theres tons of bugs right now for DE.

  • Malice does not get applied quicker if you attack with anything but rifle
  • The #4 on rifle standing up needs to act like phase retreat, remove the cast time it’s dumb and makes about face really clunky and 5 initiative for condi remove is a very high cost
  • Resetting Steal(Deadeyes mark) with mercy makes you lose your stolen abilities, intended or not? Bad if its intended.
  • No reason to use auto attack, too slow and less damage then rifle engi/ranger standing up/kneeling
  • Need to be able to steal without target for SA traits to work
  • Mark needs to be instant to get back that play with stomp/resses that can be so clutch in a saving fight (steal when stomping or steal when ressing is interesting plays, you lose this completely with mark being cast time, it’s already a “nerf” that you can’t port to low HP targets if they kite on high ground etc)

Utilities seems underwhelming, heal too and traits needs to be looked at

4. If you want to make DrD unplayable nerf AA damage on daggers, increase headshot/SS ini decrease dash range from 450 to 350-400 and reduce swiftness from 10 sec to 5 sec. Nerf PI further either dmg/add ICD whichever, same result in the end

I also however have the impression that removing DrD from the meta wouldn’t make DE replace it tho, you would just have a meta similar to revenant’s era at least that’s what I think. And I also don’t feel DE would have been played that much differently in it’s role then a DrD except it’s new mechanics and a weapon but I assume the role would still be played the same way so I don’t really see what difference it makes (you still stealth, use mobility to +1 from stealth) it’s just done differently.

If they just made a specialization based around 1v1 instead or a bruiser type of gameplay that would have been a lot more interesting

Condi on S/D has literally nothing to do with Daredevil.

Impaling Lotus adds 3 conditions to cover the poison stacks just by dodging, 4 with the vulnerability sigil. That’s the only reason condi thief is kinda broken, because cleanses can barely dig through all the cover condis.

ToF really dude? like really?

not like. bugfix firebrand. speed up casttimes. make the 33% cd trait effect virtues. and increase healing power scaling.

feel like that would be far better than nerfing ToF again lol. but I guess if it’s still killing u I get it lol. pretty embarrassing to be rolled by trapper these days.

Then don’t nerf ToF, I don’t care, but something has to be done. No, I have no problem with DHs now, it’s a problem for the future. Have you played against any this weekend on new specs? It’s ridiculously effective for no real effort. Or Daredevil, which makes any future thief spec completely garbage because it outdoes them in every way AND counters them.

I for one do not want another HoT release. Season 1 turned a lot of players away from the game, I do not want another disaster. This is our last chance to make something out of PvP and these 2 cancer specs cannot stay as they are.

Idk I would have loved a sword/sword thief/blademaster type of gameplay and base it around 1v1 instead of some terrible sniper CoD wannabe, it’s so obvious it’s not gonna work in pvp it’s actually laughable. So of course you are gonna have daredevil outperform any thief build in pvp because no one can compete with the +1 role as they do, nerf that and you won’t have any thief in the top tiers, will be down there with what warrior is right now. Like don’t get me wrong I would love to be wrong and get to play something else. I am tired of seeing the same meta that’s why I’m so disappointed in rifle to begin with.

And tbh let them nerf drd to the ground if they want would just give me an excuse to play some other class LUL

You literally queue ranked when everyone’s trying builds so everyone’s clueless, you don’t duel any current meta build (that you even know off since you say you been gone for two years) and you say you can 1v1 anything. I dont know how many times I counted that you would have been obliterated from the whole game by a normal DRD thief/DH/Rev/Condi S/D thief hell even core D/P thief would have done so.

But yeah, you can basically 1v1 everything when they die out of boredom and logs out.

I’ll happily be proven wrong when monthly AT comes up after expac launch and we’ll see if there’s any successful DE in any top team, I know I won’t be playing one but I’ll defo fool around with it in ranked

Heres some that I have so far

1. Mark needs to be instant, you lose the interesting “plays” in example steal enemy when ressing your teammate, or steal when you are stomping, I consider these plays interesting and you kill the possibility with having a cast, you already have a trade off and that is the fact you do not port to your target so people can LoS steal now.
2. All the stolen skills are really undertuned and needs heavy buffs.
3. Snipe #5 feels incredibly clunky, I want it to be more smooth and be able to leave the stance by wasd instead of having to #5 again.
4. Malice bar is not so clear graphic wise to see, same goes for the stolen abilities, all have the same dark tone of graphics and is hard to tell the difference between them, compare them to core thief ones you can tell really quickly what stolen ability is which due to the color difference in all of them
5. Malice does not get applied quicker if you attack with anything but rifle
6. The #4 on rifle standing up needs to act like phase retreat, remove the cast time it’s dumb and makes about face really clunky and 5 initiative for condi remove is a very high cost
7. Resetting Steal(Deadeyes mark) with mercy makes you lose your stolen abilities, intended or not? Bad if its intended. Same goes for if target dies, should not be like this IMO.
8. Autoattack is also damagewise worse then ranger #1 and engi rifle #1 when standing up. I also feel most of the attacks feel slow and clunky somewhat.
9. Deadeye heal CD and cast too long IMO
10. Improvisation seems to be resetting VERY little so I’m unsure if anet coded it so it ignores daredevil utilities even if you do not have them
11. Need to be able to steal without a target so you can get stealth from Shadow Arts traits/trickery buffs etc

I’m trying again:
The february patch in 2015 messed the whole combat in this game up. I have no idea what they did but since then: D/D was broken (not being able to hit moving targets, steal CnD combo broken), D/P is super evasive, the ping/lags between red, blue and green are off – mostly. And more was destroyed, just that I know thief the best.
Most people don’t notice this because they’re AoE-ing everything or excuse everything with ‘game is laggy’ which it isn’t always. I’m trying to be heard since feb 2015 and most who I told this called me nuts, just like you guys. I still know I’m right. Maybe because I’m playing this game for 4 years, was on NA, so was used to high ping, am now playing on EU and see the difference (high/low ping) and so on and so on.
I might not be right in this very case, that’s why I’m asking anet to check it – they won’t say anything anyway, so it might well go unchecked or fixed if it was broken and we’ll never know. So what?! Whatever – it’s worth a try.

Sindrener: It’s always the same, no matter which D/P I fight when and where – the 2 who might have had a high ping make no real difference.

cabbage: I don’t hate D/P that much but I still think it’s the bane of all of thief’s problems, yes. I just want the stuff they broke in Feb 2015 to be acknowledged and possibly fixed.

I can tell you this, it has absolute nothing to do with D/P as much as you would like to think that, however now that you explain it something that is broken happened after they added the new option called “Enable camera teleportation” we have issues with classes (thieves, revs, guards and pretty much everything with any sort of port)

This is the teleport problem I’m talking about, there is big ones where you can’t see the player at all until the very end of the animation. As I said this issue has been ever since they added that option.

It can also be shown sometimes as if they are in range and then suddenly pop out of range, this might be what you are experiencing

Personally, and I am speaking as someone who has been playing competitive sports for a very long time, this is my window into competition; so this is my take:

The 1st thing is to get cheating/manipulation under control to provide the proper environment for competition. To many people, who did not earn what they have with respect to titles, rewards and all that goes with legitimate winning, are ruining the competitive scene for the rest of us.

2nd, ihmo, winning is it’s own reward and only those who win on a consistent basis should enjoy the “spoils of war.” Losing should be used to learn, motivate, and grow, but if everyone gets a reward, even for losing, then why would you want to compete to win?

3rd, I think that there should be a hard reset at the beginning of each season (many will bemoan but honestly, name any other competitive sport that carries its record into a subsequent season? – prove your mettle! ). Furthermore, only the first 120 games should count for overall rewards. Again, the only frame of reference I have is competitive sports, where you have a fixed season, play off, and championship. Reward the top 10 players by having a tourney or something of that sort.

4th, when you have a solo-duo que, you get what you get. If they are not allowing pre-made teams, then you end up with whatever you end up with. You can’t always get what you want – not even team mates. It’s the pits, but that’s how competition works when you have a “pick-up” team. Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you have them on your team. I really don’t mind as long as they are NOT manipulators/cheaters. Sometimes, the best way to learn is to roll up your sleeves and get to it. There cannot be real community in GW2 unless you have an avenue, and the people who are willing to risk, in order to bring others along. It is an enterprise that if you do not take the time to invest in others, then the overall quality and pool will suffer until you do. It should be considered a long term investment in the life of sPvP community, but most can’t see past their own nose.

Finally, it’s not fair to keep comparing online games one to another. They all have things they do well and weaknesses. All games are a work in progress and that within the perimeters of the scope of their design. I really enjoy GW2, it has a lot to offer especially in competitive modes. Is it perfect or no room for improvement? No, but that doesn’t keep me from finding ways to enjoy what GW2 brings with it – warts and all.

Even if they started streaming them, you think it’d get more views than Sind or Helseth? Then NA is pretty much dead, knowing how shady that region is I wouldn’t be surprised if some of them were selling info on enemy movement to the highest bidder if it’s in real-time.

It’ll be used once a month for the monthly, best case scenario, but will probably end up being forgotten in 1-2 months.

I’d much rather have the devs work on something that benefits PvP in general like, you know, a 3v3 gamemode. Instead they work on a pointless feature trying to grow a scene that won’t happen. ASP doesn’t bring in new players, new gamemodes do.

It’s hardly comparable to past phases in GW2 PvP. The point is that this is regular monthly tournament, it is not a massive amount of effort for any streamer who wanted to take the role on. The regular format of the AT system is perfect for an ASP to content create around.

And as for the NA is dead thing this is a nonsense. Sure there aren’t many pro level players left. But this isn’t a pro game. It’s about a competitive community, not an E-Sport. There are plenty of people willing to field teams, try hard, and get better.

And, correct me if I’m wrong Sind, but I’m pretty sure both Sind and Helseth have said they won’t stream the tourneys if someone is casting them or themselves would do some casting. This is what happened with Unity Go Tourney. This doesn’t prohibit PoVs being recorded for layer or some ‘Victory strims’.

Nah we don’t stream tournaments that we are not allowed to stream (in example jebro) this has always been like this with ESL/ToL etc. But Monthly AT’s if we participate we will continue on streaming

You are making it sound like they have to re-invent something that already has existed, I am sure that it doesn’t require many hours to re implement something that has already existed previously – comparing it to developing a new gamemode ROFL.

Fair point. But this is why I hate Anet’s poor communication, we don’t know whether they are working on something bigger and this is just a side project or this is all they are working on while PvE gets an entire expansion.

If I knew there’s something meaningful coming I wouldn’t be kittening about this. I want PvP to grow just like you and more dev time on ASP should be the lowest possible priority on an endless list. Well, higher than changing the division icons again, but still very low.

Of course, If they are choosing between reintroducing ASP vs improving/creating new stuff for PvP I wouldnt be discussing this

I just think ASP is a great tool and will help people who are interested in starting to create content or people who already create content. As I said good example is me and Helseth – we did tournament of groucharoo which was insanely successful just to cast interesting games, problem is that we do not have the will or energy to create tournaments. Having ASP to help us and just tell teams to play a certain AT or even monthly for us to cast and we would probably get tons of viewers for it and also show other PoV’s instead of mes/thief and generally also an overview of the games

Just ASP. The way the spectate stuff works currently doesn’t make it feasible to open it up to everyone. It would be nice if we were able to change this someday, but it would be quite a ways down the road.

No offense but that sounds like wasted dev time. The top teams are already streaming/recording these tournaments, often multiple players per team and the authorized shoutcasters haven’t really done anything in 3 years.

I undertstand what you’re going for I just don’t think it’ll ever be used more than 1 month after its release.

I disagree, currently you have footage from me and Helseth mostly and let’s say we don’t play or can’t play then suddenly you have nothing. Also ASP can let US create content if we don’t participate. Hell I mean it might even be interesting just to look at some AT’s instead of playing and go through what they are doing badly or doing great. I think it’s well worth the time. It also opens up for other casters as Jebro who can then cast monthly AT’s and make it bigger and watch other PoV’s instead of us two only

It’s possible they may remain marked in stealth and visable only to the deadeye, I forget what game I played using this mechanic but it would make a lot of sense to me to use it here.

Where are you seeing these nerfs? I see nothing in the patch nor in the thief subforum about any nerfs to condi thief.

My guess is a stealth nerf, ive co mained my condi thief for a long time and know how to use him

I can tell that his damage is way lower than it used to be, then i played a couple matches, I’m used to seeing 350K+-500k per match, not one match did i break 300k in damage

You need to lay down whatever you are smoking there is no nerfs to condi thief.

I think the reason why people dislike condi thief is the low effort you have in order to do a full condi burst, steal into → lotus → sb#4 and since theres generally very few classes with that much amount of condi cleanse and especially properly condi cleansing they die.

I don’t personally mind condi thief but this is most likely the reason

No, they made the correct skill unblockable, especially with how many blocks there are thrown about with reckless abandon since HoT. They just could have made CnD unblockable in addition to the other changes.

I would whole heartedly welcome those changes, but I doubt anet would dish out that much unblockable to one weapon set, especially if you include basi venom.

A possible solution would be to tie the unblockable aspect of CnD to a traitline that S/D gets very little use out of, like SA.

Or tie unblockable Flanking Strikes to something in Acro, as Condi DD wouldn’t really benefit from unblockable CnD, and Power DD generally doesn’t take Acro.

Agreed, could have been a minor trait that would have made any of these skill unblockable or a trait as well.

If this is intended at the very least the devs should update the patch notes to reflect it.

It can’t be intended, because currently BT does not remove stability as a boon at all. As i previously mentioned it only removes 1 stack but that is because of sleight of hand. And I have a very very hard time believing that BT would remove all boons in the game except stability.

Dont bother with Crinn, that guy is obviously not experienced whatsoever, anyway. I can understand some points where as taking stability gets negated by a skill, but so does corrupt boon or other means of “boonrip” except BT now of course. Even sigils will rip it revocation/annulment/mes shatters blabla you name it

The problem still stands if you have a skill with 8 stacks of stab theres no possible way anymore to counterplay it if we remove that boonrip removes the whole stack. So now you got another issue where stability has no counterplay anymore which is dumb, theres no middleground here its either you rip it or you don’t. A solution would be to make stability have very few stacks like 1-2 stacks depending on the skill so you can interrupt it and then get rid of it.

Also by furthering trying it out it seems like BT completely lost the removal of stab so surely it must be a bug. Tried it with an ele again who ran armor of earth only and pops stab and i rip prot only and 1 stability stack gets removed (from sleight of hand) so in theory BT+Sleight should be removing 2 stacks no?

Precisely Sind, I think the point being made was that it did not end at 00:00:00.000, i.e when the server reset and it became the 8th. We stopped being able to 1) get ranking points, 2) clear decay, 3) get pips, from an hour before reset.

This means the effective end time of season 7 was – “2017-08-07T23:00:00.000Z”, which is intensely unfair and frustrating for those – including myself – who had the legitimate expectation of being able to do 1/2/3 or all of the above before the stipulated time.

What are you on about? It ended 02.00 gmt +1 which is servertime 00:00 which is exactly what i linked and what it says. If you go on options and press servertime it will tell you what servertime it is.

I am starting to get a bit more hyped about this. I hvae much more interest in theorycrafting then just finding the one build to rule them all and I start to see potential.

As example the Stealth Attack from the rifle converts 2 boons into conditions. RS in SA outright steals two boons. Which has priority? Ripping two boons and converting two more into conditions with one attack might be interesting.

How well will new steal work with Improv. ? Doubling up on stolen skills that are only usable in melee might be counterproductive yet at the same time a steal off a fellow thief is promising.

What happens when a “marked target” stealths? Is the lock maintained? It would be nice that if a marked target stealthed , you could maintain targetting on it through that stealth even if you might not be able to attack it.

They said with deadeye we get new stolen abilities completely so I’m assuming they will be ranged and we have no idea yet what they are

I still play a Core thief where Daredevil not traited and his odds of a reset on skill are in fact higher as the Daredevil utilities not factored in.

The system assumes they do not exist. Remember that the way these utilities work is that there zeo access to any of them without Daredevil elite wherein all of the other utilities are always accessible.

well if it becomes a problem i am sure the devs will hot fix it. also take into account they are not just going to release the new specs and not rework all the old stuff for balance.

Maybe improvisation was not an issue with only 1 elite spec so they left it as is. but they might change it come xpack do to the issue brought up by OP.

You “assume” they will hotfix it yet lead strikes have been broken ever since they increased vault cost to 6 still only gives you 5, LOL.

You can’t take both elites at once so technically nothing changes..

Doesn’t matter as long as the skills exist it counts as a category, traps/tricks counts even thought you don’t equip them in the RNG of improvisation, so I don’t see how physical would be any different even if you don’t equip daredevil

The issue with the ports not working is that it works one patch and stops working another, frostball have uploaded several videos on kyhlo/colisseum when you can do certain ports, and after a patch it stops working. It is as if they run different versions of the maps and rolls them back when patch hits.

I’m very in touch with the playerbase in NA and I only know of 2 people who have received “dishonor” for the remainder of the season who have already received multiple temp bans.Arena pretends it’s doing ban waves when ik Lora of people who are blatantly match fixing and nope…nothing.They only pretend on here they’re doing something to ease tensions and relations.Look at the last monthly at for example everyone knows that those players were not who they said there were and were infact the #1 team NA.Whatever they do now sets a precedent or the future,and whether or not they’ll simply just take away the rewards from the boosted account or punish the perprators who sold them the win in the first place
