obsidian flesh 4 sec invulnerability shocking aura stun when they hit u burning speed to reposition ur self and keep theif farther away from a back stab plus u can dodge twice these are some very simple ways for u to solve the issue just be better at ur class instead of calling for nerfs pls and if they are D/D then dodge the very telegraphed cloak and dagger skill and they will run out of utilities to go invis with

salty. if you think regen is better than init traits/skills than you really should think a lil harder. even if you had 1.5 init per second its not as useful as having initiative gain skills/traits bc u need them on command to finish enemies or escape or to go stealthed. having initiative on command is a NECCESSITY for thief. not a luxury.

Isn’t that one of their reasons for nerfing, the fact that it’s a “necessity” to be using skills/traits that give init. You know if they nerf them so much that it’s relatively useless to take those skills/traits… then we don’t have to, and that promotes build diversity! So, if any of our skills/trait’s become another necessity, that’s when they become targets for a nerf (buffing/fixing other skills/traits? lol good one)…

u missed the point. its a neccesity bc we need to have a FAST gain. not a fast regen. for emergencies and finishing. low hp low armor no block no invuln no protection no aegis …. its a neccessity. this init nerf is making it worse. its taking the control from the players and making it passive not to mention for an overall loss.

p.s. I was being semi-saracastic on saying nerf something to promote build diversity because that nerfed something is now useless… pretty soon we will be running the famous reroll-to-warrior build or the bother of that build reroll-to-guardian build.

The Dec. 10th changes seem reasonable for the reasons listed, but my thief still seems like it has a ton of problems which have not ever been addressed.

Don’t hold your breath, just use the reroll-to-warrior build.

TLDR; Thieves with 15+ in critical strikes and no other initiative traits will be slightly less efficient. All other thieves will be equally or more efficient.

Ive been running d/p glass since day 1 lol 25/30/0/0/15 now that my build will be less efficient when its already takes a lot of game play time and skill to be able to fight groups with out having that perma stealth option and house cause ur an easy target for aoe and ur only stealth skill is heal cause 5,2 cost way too much ini when ur not traited in SA for ini back on HS. They pretty much leave u with limited options in the end. Go warrior or P/x … i did both

i hear u on that ive had to deal with it on other mmo’s it’s just an issue thats rlly hard to deal with since they will never change the height for them. There only option is to put symbols over there heads for certain skills and that just a pain lol

There’s a reason the warrior is getting nerfed on december 10th.

Mostly because complaining about something on a forum is much easier than actually learning the game mechanics and how to counter whatever you are facing.

2-3k earthshakers that your average ham warrior puts out in WvW is pretty ignorable by itself. For anyone specced to hit harder, then it’s a simple matter of countering it with the knowledge that they specced for dmg (primarily reliant on an earthshaker-->backbreaker —> staggering blow --> follow up attacks routine) at the expense of some survivability. If you’re repeatedly getting hit by the most common intiatior, earthshaker, one of the most telegraphed and delayed abilities in the game, it’s time to bind your dodge key to your keyboard or press your blink/blind/evade/invuln/stab/block ability (pick one) and recognize you need to press it when the war stops, brings the hammer behind his head, and awkwardly leaps forward. Unlike many other instant-cast ranged abilities in the game, ES can actually be countered before you’re even hit by it through proper animation recognition and timely skill response. Now it’s on a min 7s CD and they’re stuck with melee weapon in hand vulnerable to kited ranged damage.

The most frustrating thing about this is the nerf is that it is catering to a lower-skillset playerbase that refused to learn the proper counter the the ability, the result of which will open up a gap between war and other classes at higher-level play.

Here’s another suggestion, something that I tried and liked. Run a full set of Runes of Scavenging:

(1): +28 Condition Damage
(2): 5% chance when hit to cause your next attack to steal health. (Cooldown: 15s)
(3): +55 Condition Damage
(4): After using your healing skill, your next attack skill steals health.
(5): +100 Condition Damage
(6): 7% of vitality becomes condition damage.

Run sigils of Leeching with this set, and you have some decent healing, some of which would be on tap with a weapon swap, or a heal. The sigil does 975 healing and the same in damage to your target.

The 5% chance seemed higher than 5% and I noticed it triggering a decent amount.

I was using that rune set prior to swapping over to Traveler runes. I liked it a lot. It wasn’t flashy like Perplexity runes, but it was handy.

so does it just instantly stealth u when u steal it or is it in ur steal skill waiting for u to use it, because if it just happens then i would hate this signet. I like to manage my reveal properly after attack and random stealth could mess it up and get me killed lol

p/d with the rights runes and sigils is an amazing build to play. its easy but hard to master/play well in a competitive setting.

Rock n Roll have fun! this build can beat anything including d/p and pesky warrior guard builds. high healing is important to keep up that poison so make sure those steals hit and not get blocked/dodged. torment on melee…its pretty strait forward. you average 6 stuns a minute…not as high as a warrior but time it forheals andbig moves.

IMO carrion isnt as useful now that dire is available since power doesn’t scale your condi damage. Better off having higher armor because the direct damage is more or less laughable.

dire is better defense. but the defense is already superb. dont need more. need power for poison dmg. and direct dmg. some classes have -65% condi removal time so youneed to have 1100 dmg on sneak attacks etc. it really adds up! even burst thieves dont make me fret. takes 3-4 good crit backstabs to take down this build.

Power doesn’t make poison damage any better. Might is the only thing that effects your condi damage that also adds power. Power is a wasted stat. Most dont run -65% condi duration and thats limited to certain classes/builds. Toughness on the other hand is absolutely not a wasted stat.

went in with testing conditions ….. the difference between direct dmg is 100%. that is carrion deals 100% MORE than dire. guess power isnt as wasted a stat as you claim. now if we dothe math …which i wont bc its 2am now…but i can tommorow if u like. the extra toughness …few hundred or w.e. it is…. only realistically saves you hundreds of hp? 400? 600? 700? over a 1 v 1 fight i mean. 100% dmg or save 3-4% of your HP during a fight from ever being taken. thats the way it should be looked at. no which ever you choose is truly up to you…. and again i can do the exact math using the toughness formula if you TRULY want to know but if u know how toughness works….its never really worth taking over HP stat. its quite minor. trust me i bought rabid and apothecary just to try it out. wasnt impressed. lost way to much attack and fights take too long and didnt really notice much of an HP change. very experienced thief here so if i couldnt tell the hp % change than its just not a stat i found worth taking. hope u found this informative

i also don’t kno the exact numbers right now but it helps with the food! also dire gives u health and toughness with condi dmg so ur just giving ur self more time in a fight to let the condi’s do there job against tanky high health classes

Ive found that going with Dire runes and getting ur duration from food alone (which i get 40-50%) is enough to keep guardians down; longer fight but with flawless game play u always win in the end. With warriors ur gonna need a lot of poison because they shed it off like a boss! You need it to stop there healing signet or else u will lose against an experienced warrior in the long run.

right. but dire runes? u mean gear i think right? dire issuch a hit to your power. its basically cutting direct dmg in half or more. thats many thousands of HP per duel. you need more than bleeds to win a fight against a good player. i run carrion. between by blinds , invis , healing , condi removal, and +300 toughness and healing power, and 19k hp, do you really need to drop power on your gear to get extra toughness?

True i have thought about this for a while now and i have not tried carrion yet. With the points into toughness it does help with the food i use (Potent Master tuning crystals condi dmg = to 6% toughness and condi dmg = to 4% vit) because i figure if ur gonna go condi might as well go all in lol. Im running with 2,064 condi dmg thats with 25 stacks from sigil of corruption and 40% duration from veggie pizza. The toughness helps though especially when u run into a group of ele’s and warriors all trying to kill you with aoe and burning everywhere lol

P.S. I would have gone for more condi duration but everyone runes with set ups to shed them like nothing thing so i also took that into account.

ive run into these -% condi players. annoying but i still win. i have about 900-1200 direct dmg on sneak attack. its not much and even if the bleeds only last 4 secs thats still 3500 total dmg between both or whatever. it really adds up. especially between auto attacks and shadow strike torment…. there are so many condis on a person that they just cant target them all. in the first 1 second of combat…my opponent has this on him…

IN THIS ORDER——-

poison 1 stack (20 seconds or so)
stun 1.25 seconds
vulnerability 3 stacks
blindness 1 stack
bleeding 7 stacks
torment 2 stacks

i run about 90% additional condition time and have about 4 initiative left after this combo hits from 1500 range away and in only about 1 second. after that a few auto attacks…dodges…..if he gets too close shadow strike again or body shot for an ADDITIONAL condition (immobilize)

now you say the 2 damaging conditions are added last so they will get removed first. well thats fine bc they are also the easiest to add back on …. Hide in shadows, shadow refuge, blinding powder, scorp wire etc. its the POISON that you really want to keep on the enemy. i have sleight of hand for extra coodlown….heals with mug…dmg with mug… and most importantly 100% uptime on poison every 20 secs renewed if they dont remove it. its alot to keep up with for an opponent.

right me too i run 10/0/30/0/30 so i also put all of those on one target with steal + 2 skill + 3 skill and the 1 skill out of invis and some times i like to start with short bow and save steal poison for safe keeping on top on the chill from utilities i just trade ur base dmg for more toughness and more condi dmg its fun! Ill have to try out your build and see if giving up some toughness is worth it

1) The guy sacrificed his elite skill, which are normally far superior, for a skill that just lets you escape, with a huge cool down. I don’t see the problem with this, especially since warriors hardly have problems running without this skill. Unless you’re really just complaining that someone denied you an easy kill by using an unconventional tactic, in which case that’s your problem.

2) Re-read your first post OP, you’re the only one crying here. Also, posting a cry-post about stealth on the thief forums is not going to get you any sympathy, especially when your complaint doesn’t involve a thief.

1) lets get this straight the simple attributes to this skill are easy to understand so the fact that it keeps getting referenced like a 4 min CD is irrelevant considering the fact that you will almost never have to use it more then once in a fight which is the basis to this conversation in the first place.

2) I like how i ask a opinion on a skill from other players ( True shouldn’t have posted in thief forum should have been in cultural) and it immediately leads to ur bad u apparently don’t have a 30 sec immobilize or stun or daze to counter them from casting stealth and dash for a crazy distance in one elite (10sec cd on these 2 skills which is fair)and ive tried it. Its not that hard to use and abuse it like resetting the entire match against someone so making it another 4 min to pop it again is very easy! and not just for a theif but all other classes except necro’s they suck at running rofl

3) Yes i did start with Nerf so ill give u that but a response like ur bad u suck so just get better and magically come up with a 30 sec cd to keep them down for the entire duration of the elite is laughable and hilarious but if u have a better answer to countering this affect then get better or waste all utilities on cd skills and run p/x or s/x and spam 2 to waste all my ini but at least they didn’t run away is not a good answer in my book so if anyone actual has some good advise besides ur bad then ur post would be greatly appreciated.

well then i would have to sit down and look at the 9 other play styles from the people around me (high burst dps theif with high burst mez x2 and ele guardian some warriors) and realize that nothing is wrong sept the elite that im talking bout just sounds like to me another bk trolling instead of being realistic so pls dont waste my time posting if ur just gonna troll! anyways besides the fact that u can travel that far while under stand stealth in the matter of seconds and laugh at cd time since ur gone in a flash and can tp after right after just makes it easy for most classes to disengage in a second might as well make a norn for every class if u want an easy mode button

The Snow Leopard dash and invis is crazy u can get away or catch up to anything in a blink of an eye ive seen warrior run 1v10 all day with this and the cast time must be instant cause im not noticing a telegraph to interrupt unless its a bug but still amazing elite just a little too amazing lol

not bad i run 10,0,30,0,30 with dire set and condi duration food sept i use daggerstorm for groups and large zergs and shadow step for condi’s and escape and and scale venom for tanks its nice just hard to keep condi’s up with out losing toughness from leaving shadow arts and going into power then im more squishy with no blind on stealth, heal on stealth and condi removal on stealth lol its a toss up but love the build!

i like shadow refuge sept it is an invitation to aoe spam from ele’s and guardians warriors etc lol they wait for and hope u have it when im play against BL and SOR blinding powder is more of a quick situational skill with low cool down i can cycle through to help apply more bleeds and keep them blinded. Im gonna get on and try this build out right now though it sounds interesting ill let u kno how it goes

To me it sounds like most builds are going to end up with MORE Initiative than before, meaning they can completely ignore any additional Initiative regeneration.

I mean buffing passive Initiative generation to 1/Sek. is a MASSIVE buff with unforeseeable consequences, even with nerfs to the trait-regeneration.

As far as I see it, Dagger/Dagger for example won’t even need Infusion of Shadows any more to sustain itself and neither will Pistol/Dagger. Only Dagger/Pistol might end up with a nerf to perma-stealthing.

And while I like the changes overall, I’m not sure if they’re really doing much to improve Venoms or many of the other under-appreciated Thief traits.

The Deadly Arts tree in general could do with a major overhaul, as could many of the passive damage increases. I think that would do more for Thieves than simply altering already popular traits.

right pls fix the deadly arts tree its boring in there venom traits aren’t good enought to bring along with zerker build … well for me atleast bring us something new in deadly arts traits pls

His ressource based attacks can be spammed unlimited, while the other classes have timers and THAT is where the Thief beats you. He waits when you are in the timer gap and from there you have zero escape. Whereas the Thief can stay in stealth virtually indefinitely.

Did you read the patch notes? This will no longer be possible. Thieves will not be able to stay stealthed indefinitely and come out with full initiative. That is done… finished… k-put hence why most D/P thieves are or will be upset as their entire style of play will need massive adjustments.

I re-read the changes and compared them to my Thief, but sorry… I dont see any dramatic changes in the issues at hand, namely the over the top DPS burst.

u must be in the wrong forum since warriors can burst u fast with GS then we can especial after this patch comes out

Oof, fair request, but I fear I am not up to it. The skill system has so many details. The general idea would not a nerf, but a CHANGE.

Thieves lose most of the high burst DPS or applying insidious stacks of bleed, and in turn get greater survivability. More like rebuilding the entire class and virtually making the stealth ONLY as a method to escape, not as part of an attack strategy. I would prefer a full rebuild over a mere nerf. Thieves should not be weaker, but different. Less of the overpowering glasscannons which attack from endless stealth.

I see this variant of Thief as a broken idea. The invis-burst-DPS roamer must be eliminated as viable playstyle.

i beleive the class ur looking for is the warrior go roll one this is a theif not a tank

Wow i never thought i would say this but seriously ive invested so much time in my theif its the only class i play ive got 5 different sets of weapons and armor for the 5 builds i run all day ive spent since day one perfecting my theif and have not complained once but this nerf is the last straw im finally gonna have to throw in the towel cause this is just starting to get rediculous im done playing a class just is just gonna keep getting crapped on like this i understand nerf perma stealth but everything rlly all im left with now thats viable is my p/d build thnx for ruining theif for me anet thnx!

Yes I have experienced this as well as stealing up to my target and not gaining their skill. This can sometimes happen if they dodge perfectly as you steal up to them… It doesn’t happen too often tho

quick question just wanted to kno if anyone was having a prob with gaining stealth on steal when its attributed and no reveal is not on because im not coming right out of stealth and then using steal to stealth again and im not attacking right after i steal so its not knocking out of stealth…. just wondering if its just me or anyone else as well

so this is a quick link to my build i tried out the more popular 0/0/30/20/20 and it just wasn’t for me so i just threw this together and it works wonders for me in TC wvw i run 1v3’s and 1v5’s alot with this build. thieves have amazing survivability if u spec for it in traits most likely leading to perma stealth i do think they need to change up some of the traits in deadly arts!

i disagree considering that everyone is applying bleeds on bosses and mobs max stacks is 25 so every just apply’s bleeds when u could doing more base dmg with short bow and sustaining bleeds with cluster and poison i would rather have a zerker with a SB then a DD applying bleeds when everyone in the group does that with base attacks and can manage it at 25 stacks with out them its a waste for dungeons i think

Taking damage brought one out of stealth, unless vanish was just used. Here, we got thieves stealthing, then stealthing right after their first stealth runs out. I guess we all have to spend money to beat a class…

If WoW had the stealth GW2 had, it would make the Rogues in WoW insanely over powered.

Being able to stealth IN COMBAT is what makes Stealth in this game very overpowering.

i dont understand what the problem is ive been running a D/P 25/30/0/0/15 theif since the game came out and since all the nerf’s lots of kids quit and went to perma stealth or rolled a warrior. Its not as easy as it looks when in high tier wvw server and i can be hit harder then i can hit them due to poor health and toughness; but with the right amount of blinds and counters and flawless game play i do rlly well but one mistake and ur dead. Especially considering that ur not spec’d for stealth and house is a dead giveaway and heal is ur best stealth option besides wasting ini on BP and HS combo and then ur screwed if u get immobilized unless u go with withdraw. This isn’t like it used to be with 2222222222 anymore those kids are long gone and who ever still attempts that is just a bk and will die 90% of the time in TC wvw lol

Well now my beserker theif is done with its hard enough to roam solo and get away quickly when u have nothing in stealth but now that rangers will be able to counter my one stealth skill since house is useless since u just need to aoe and they kno exactly were to do it. How about adding something in the power tree because i run 25/30/0/0/15 since i need something more then a immobilize that’s easily countered

Hey I am a lvl 80 theif looking for a WvW guild. Ive been playing since day1, and i have been participating in WvW since day 1 as well. I have previous experience in Perfect World for 5+ years, Aion for 3, and Guild Wars for 2 years . I am looking for a experienced that knows what they a doing not just a zerg WvW guild. In PVE i mainly do bosses events and dungeon runs as well for eventually in due time getting my legendary weapons I am on Tarnished Coast server’s eastern time.

lol c definately! but expecting a long range necro to chance u to add the extra condition dmg that u need to take them down is not helpfull expecially against a normal player. they are easy to see an avoid just not enough dmg to be that effective expecialy again a necro since they can transfer all ur condition dmg from them to u and have a second life bar
