They didn’t destroy the dungeon community. The dungeon community (especially the casual side) just moved on.
….
You don’t seem to understand the syntax of what you said. When you say “destroyed the dungeon community” you are placing blame on Anet, not stating the dungeon community moved on of its own will and volition, which is what happened.
no offense, but are you new? Dungeons died out because 1. Anet killed the gold you could get from a dungeon (IIRC they at least slashed it in half… maybe worse). and 2. they took their dungeon team, said “we’re not doing dungeons anymore” and put em on fractals. this was when the fractals were greatly expanded (from 50 to 100) and enhanced (no more randoms. better dailies, better loot).
so yeah. no matter how you try to slice it and no matter what wordplay you try to employ… Anet killed dungeons.

you know what they say… everyone on the internet is a guy until proven otherwise.
Yea, I agree OP. You can’t enjoy the game or become immersed in it unless you identify on a fairly deep level with your character.
pretty sure there is nothing at all deep about my pastel colored gigantic norn named Fruit Loop Warrior or my cosplay character Sniperoth (take a wild guess what he looks like) or my ele named Pointless Timewaste.
some people do it to explore the other side… some do it just because they don’t want to stare at their own gender’s kitten running around everywhere… some people just do it because they really don’t like the race model for their own gender (male norn looking… lopsided, for example)
Guys who play female characters are just feminine men in RL (which is fine I guess).
my husband has about an even 50/50 split on genders in this game. he had 2 female characters in the last game we played. he is DEFINITELY NOT a “girly man” in any sense.
i am most assuredly a female.. and i have 2 male toons here, and 2 male toons in the last game i played.
the way i see it is this: if you’re ok with playing a character of the opposite gender.. that’s fine. if you’re NOT comfortable with playing a character of the opposite gender, that’s fine too.. just don’t go telling either group they’re wrong in their feelings.

This thread is still a jumbled mess because everyone has their own definition of the word casual.
OP, could you please give specific things that the developers need to do to "remember the casuals"
This request is just too vague.
Stihl didn’t actually request anything. he simply asked if a certain gamer demographic had been remembered. a great amount of this thread has not actually addressed the question at hand, but instead has quibbled over word definitions and had plenty of accusatory finger pointing, wrong assumptions, and borderline trolling.

"i haven’t played for a year, so i’m super rusty and right now i look like a monkey humping a football" =/= "i have absolutely no idea how to play this game."

~o hai there :D~ LONG LIVE ET
few things.
casual is NOT about how much time you play or how skilled you are, or are not, and how much you do or do not solo.
it is about your approach to the game. do you play just for giggles? do you just log on for an hour or two to blow off some steam? or do you attack it like a job... researching the best gear, theorycrafting with the planner, reading the metabattle builds, and watching videos of how other, potentially better, players play (yourfavoriteclass)?
that being said... certain marks, while not impossible, are usually only attained by people who AREN’T playing casually... owning 5 legendaries is out of the scope that would normally be considered casual... so far so that the sarcastic response to the poster who mentioned they were casual with 5 legendaries was not only unsurprising... it was expected.
i’ve played 3 years out of the last 5. i started playing 5 months after the game came out. have 12 characters (1 of each, and 4 rangers) all at 80 all fully geared in at least exotics, and almost all have their elite specs. i have 11k AP. i have 2 legendaries (both times i had the precursor given to me). i have one character fully outfitted tip to toe in ascended Vipers. i have every trade skill at 400 or better. i’ve made maudry and light of dwayna. i’ve done a level 79 fractal. i solo towers in WvW without too much trouble. i was a liked commander, and i even commanded for 16 hours straight one day.
i did NOT consider myself to be a casual (altho with the "casual" resume i’ve seen some post in this thread, i’m sure they would consider me such)... and i’m pretty sure that, while i’m certainly not the best player out there... i do actually know how to play my favorite class quite well, and many more at least passably.
i’ve NEVER completed a raid... i disliked all the HoT maps and found them frustrating and difficult to maneuver. i stopped playing shortly after HoT came out.
i too, like Stihl, have come back tenatively to check out the new expac. if it is more like core Tyria in overall feel... i may buy it... if it’s all crap like HoT... back to DDO i will go... where i’ll go back to soloing epic elite content and various raids (yes raids) on my bard, just to see if i can.

there doesn’t have to be constant music... depends on how it gets played off... could be similar to ele where each instrument (stringed, wind, percussion) grants a different set of weapon effects. could be similar to engi where each instrument counts as a bundle with different utility slot effects... could be some hybrid of both.
in D&D (and therefor DDO in a similar fashion) a bard didn’t sing constantly... it would sing to buff beforehand. and sometimes would sing instead of fighting to grant some circumstantial bonus.
in EQ bards sang constantly, but it was more of an aura effect, and they could fight while using songs... each one granting a different ability, and each one lingering a certain number of seconds after you stopped singing it... so skilled bards would "twist" 2 or 3 (or more) songs together at the same time by starting another song while the effects of the previous still lingered... very button mashing intense... but an interesting mechanic. maybe even an aura effect like revenents have... but being different songs instead of spirits
just some ideas..
bards are typically depicted as light armor wearing (would translate to medium armor in GW2) light weapon using... typically daggers or rapiers... primarily support class. possible weapon list for GW2 would be sword, dagger, horn, focus, shortbow. possibly pistol. actual playstyle would potentially be somewhere between a mesmer and a thief (highly mobile, with some illusionary and redirection stuff thrown in). stuns or charms could be an interesting mechanic. (stuns already been done to death, but charming an enemy and have it fight for you? that’s a bard’s bread and butter! imagine the chaos that could cause in WvW! LOLOL)
i’m all for them introducing a bard class. or even a bard elite spec for thief or mesmer. i would play the kitten out of that!
<3 bards!

hmm...
i have 2 human rangers (one female one male), a human necro, a human ele
a charr ranger, a charr mesmer, a charr revenant
a sylvari ranger, a sylvari thief, a sylvari guardian
an asura guard and an asura engi
and a norn warrior
~o hai there :D~ LONG LIVE ET
…for example, I have a guild mate that names all their Sylvari after plants, which it seems, so do a lot of other people in GW2, so they sometimes have a little difficulty trying to get an exact plant, but a large part of that is due to their own stubbornness to want that exact plant, for example, they wanted to use, I think it was Poison Ivy as name, (not really 100% sure) so they went about looking at all the veins, technical names, and everything they could think of to get that name for their Sylvari. They ended up using special characters to make it happen. I got a laugh out of it, But, all their frustration, they brought upon themselves.
yep. guilty. XD actually, my most recent sylvari had the strangest round-about name choosing yet… lol. my first sylvari was a thief. named her Deadly Nightshayd. made sense to me, extremely poisonous deadly plant goes well with thief, which frequently uses poison. my 2nd was a druid that i had originally planned to specifically be a healer… a very common healing herb is sage. i went to the scientific name and tried every combination of letters and name+surname that i was willing to settle for and didn’t hit anything. i finally ended up using special characters and got Sälvïä. that brings me to my aforementioned most recent sylvari… i wanted to make a burn guard. had a concept in my mind of some kind of angelic avenger raining fire upon her enemies… blah blah yadda yadda, so i googled angel flower. got a hit for angel trumpet (which happens to be related to the nightshade family), one of the varieties thereof is called Datura… a beautiful flower, but also a potent possibly poisonous hallucinogenic i went with it, but still had to fight to get the name i wanted with the spelling i wanted. ended up with Datura Innoxiä. i even went one step further and each character’s main color is the color associated with their respective plant name… nightshade is a deep dark (sometimes reddish) purple, sage has pinkish lavender flowers, and datura is white.
but like Stihl said… i brought all my frustration on myself restricting myself to a certain name or certain few name choices. i’ve had no such trouble with the rest of my characters (15 in total between 2 accounts)

fair enough. good points. i agree.
the only thing i’ll add is some of the fractal/dungeon bosses have a "Attack the dude with highest toughness" mechanic similar to what VG has... in that case, while everyone has a self heal, you do still end up with a de facto tank... but since ANYONE could build for toughness... your "tank" was not limited to certain classes, as they would be in other games.
ELE TANK GO~! lol

(edited by katz.8376)
Just wondering, which fight on GW2 that you think is more exciting or engaging? I mean, if that’s “tank and spank”, isn’t every GW2 fight is tanking and spanking then?
——————-
I just want to say that those people probably just want to help you and doesn’t really meant you any harm. Months ago during a raid we have a necro who’s running minion build. We were talking about whether minion build can work for this raid or not and asked him if he has a more condition damage oriented skills. The necro then just left, without a single word. Seriously, we want to help him choose skills that’s better suited for the encounter, not berating him for picking the wrong skill =/
—————————-
I have a confession to make. Last week I played necro and my monday raid cleared wing 1 + 2 of w2 bosses with super ease (we phased VG with 7:05 remaining for god’s sake). But to be honest? While my armor is full viper, one of my accessories is actually exotic and one of my asc ring even has toughness on it. Yes, I’m not playing at 100% and we still do awesome on the bosses, BUT I still feel bad for my other raiding members. They’re all probably playing at their 100%, yet here I am disrespecting them by playing with crappy stats =/(huh “giimped” is apparently censored to “kitten” =x)
thank you for a more polite and level headed response than quite a few of the posts in this thread. to answer your first question… unfortunately most fights in GW2 are pretty simple tank and spank variety of varying difficulties. one of the most engaging and interesting fights that i can think of off-hand is actually Triple Trouble. not only does each head have it’s own mechanic, you have a whole series of events leading in to it, AND you have to kill all 3 heads within a short time frame, so you have to co-ordinate a large number of people to get it done. and you do have certain roles that need to be filled.. condi for husks, reflects, etc. this, to me, is more what a raid should be. epic on a grand scale. dodging teleport attacks and running to green circles over and over and over while beating down one guy is kinda meh, especially when there’s no intro… you just walk in and start whalin on the guy. admittedly i haven’t seen anything beyond VG yet. maybe other wings are more interesting, but the intro unfortunately doesn’t make me excited to see more.
to your second point… it does depend heavily on what is being said and how it’s being said. some people cannot take any advice whatsoever, but not everyone. i am much more willing to listen if it is not presented in the “this is why and how you suck” package. i have no idea what was said to the necro in your example, so what i say after this is pure hypothetical, but using a minionmancer as an example. they work great in PvE. so guy takes his minionmancer into a raid. the people raiding with him have 2 options at this point… you can say “you shouldn’t run minions in here. thus-and-such condi skills are better.” or you can say “hey man… minionmancers are awesome in open world, but the minions are grabbing agro and make the boss difficult to control. thus-and-such skill might be a better idea. could you swap please?” it’s hard to read tone in the written word, so while the former may have been delivered with the best of intentions, it is invariably read as “you suck for running minons. n00b.” there are still people that would leave even if told the 2nd option… but the 2nd is much more polite, less likely to be misunderstood. in my case i was told/asked “don’t you want to be the best you can be?” and it came off as very haughty. i’ve spent hundreds if not thousands of gold gearing my main, and spent the last 3 years tweaking my build. no, i don’t want to be told i suck because i don’t match someone’s spreadsheet of what’s the latest meta builds100%.
and as for your last point… 99% is still an A. you are still bringing your A game. you can feel bad about not being perfect if you want, but if i found out i was in a raid group with you, and i found out you had an exotic trinket, and one ring with toughness on it, i would say “so? we won, didn’t we?” the fact that you feel that not being 100% is disrespecting the group, and the fact that someone would feel disrespected by you not being 100% is part of what i feel is wrong with the current raiding scene… it breeds elitism. someone who feels disrespected by someone not being 100% is potentially someone who says “what the kitten are you doing, n00b!” just bring your A game
reminds me of a raid from DDO… The Thirteenth Eclipse… aka Shroud. it was a highly sought after raid for a while because you could use components from the end chests to make very good weapons and accessories. one of those weapons you could make was a so-called boss beater… a weapon that combined a metal type and a damage type to break through the damage reduction of the main end boss of the raid, a balor. if you know D&D at all, you know you need silver and good damage both to hurt a balor. there were other “boss beater” weapons available… if RNG was good to you, you could randomly find a weapon that could break his DR, but for a while, elitest (stupid) people were requiring the very weapon made from components from the end of the raid…to join the raid group. talk about a catch 22.
~o hai there :D~ LONG LIVE ET
>sigh<
alright. fine. my point of view and personal experience on GW2 raids, in it’s entirety.
1. i see lots of, honestly, very nasty elitist posts on the forums regarding being prepared for raids.
2. i’ve attempted to run raids several times with several different guilds i’m either in, or friends with. i have yet to succeed at the first wing. i’ve operated in a few different positions in the raid so far... tank, healer, condi damage, even tried one run on my herald breaking the bar with staff. the raid mechanism for the Vale Guardian fight is not terribly exciting or engaging IN MY OPINION. the actual raid wing itself is a (in my opinion) very uninspired "tank and spank" . it’s a tiny bit difficult, but only because twitch and running to the right place at the right time. basically, in most of my group’s attempts, the tank just needs a little more practice where and when to move close to the end when more than one section of floor is lit. the actual "dodge this, CC that, move here, more there." is straight forward and, frankly, boring.
3. i’d like to have a success under my belt, so i can at least possibly offer pointers to my friends... i join a group advertised here and on reddit promising to be friendly and open raid training. i get stuck in a "gear check" list, and i can’t even make an attempt until i ping all my gear to someone in charge of the group, and he decides if it’s meta enough or not... and when i say anything even remotely questioning or disapproving, i am told "don’t you want to be the best you can be?" I was running a Viper’s druid before it became a raiding meta. i’m in full ascended. i’ve been playing a ranger for 3 years. i’m not playing a flavor of the month or a PvE fun wtf build. let me run with what i got. i felt unwelcome and frustrated in what was supposed to be an accepting training group. i left them without having even once run or even attempted VG with them.
4. now i’m getting really fed up with raids in general. and now people on the forums basically are saying "if you aren’t raiding, you suck." paraphrased of course, but that’s what it boils down to.
5. the announcement is made that i need a mastery that i don’t have to complete the 6th wing. i’m not really enjoying HoT maps. i frustrated myself enough getting the vipers gear for my druid and the sigil of draining for my interrupt chronomancer. i really don’t want to torture myself to get another 2-3 ranks of gliding (not sure how many i need to max it. haven’t looked in a while). i’m already annoyed about raiding. so great. thanks for letting me know. screw raiding.
it would be a lot different if more people were actually helpful and friendly about it. but instead i get told to "get gud n00b" and "quit being lazy".
people are running shortman and speedruns already. and several people in this very thread have said "it’s not really that hard". if that’s really the case, then people shouldn’t be bent out of shape if one person isn’t 100% efficient. no, you don’t want to carry someone in a lolwut build, but it shouldn’t be an issue to take someone who isn’t "meta" as long as they’re good and know what they’re doing and the group as a whole can fill all the roles.
i’m not saying i don’t raid at all. i’m not saying i won’t raid at all. i’m saying that i’m not terribly motivated to work hard to raid, because of the current atmosphere surrounding raiding. i will still be making regular attempts on VG till i manage to succeed. i’ll just be doing it with my guildies, on our terms.

You don’t like raids at all and post in this thread? Now i wonder why you even read it…
biggest reason i don’t like raids is the kitten elitists i gotta put up with to run them. sucks the fun out of the game when someone else is fussing at you how you HAVE to build and gear, down to the n-th detail, or else you’re gonna get thrown out of the group.

If your tastes are so refined and specific (e.g. "i like to raid but I absolutely refuse to get 30 mastery points") you should have the self-awareness to realize that your tastes are so specific and not have unrealistic expectations of being catered to. It’s fine to only like wine produced in a certain region during a certain year by a certain vineyard, but don’t flip out when you encounter a restaurant that doesn’t offer it.
well. see... the problem i’m having is i’m saying "i don’t really like wine at all. i just drink it occasionally with my friends. i prefer rum and coke. but now my favorite bar down the road told me "yeah, now to get that wine you have to do 5 pushups and 5 jumping jacks first, then i’ll serve you the wine." no, it’s not that hard to do the minor task required to get the wine, but since i never really liked the wine to begin with, it’s trouble i’m not willing to put myself to... so i thank him for letting me know, and i now ignore the wine and go back to happily drinking my rum and coke. everyone else is flipping out around me saying "WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DON’T LIKE WINE, YOU UNCULTURED SWINE!!!!" yeah. that makes me want to go drink the wine. sure

Y’all people who are complaining about this making things inaccessible need to go play platformers or other types of game where everything is unlocked right now. lots of assumptions were made about me and my statement. you know what they say about assumptions.
i’m not new. i didn’t rush to 80. i’ve been around since January 2013. my main is fully outfitted in ascended head to toe and 2 legendaries, and my other 11 characters are all 80 and fully outfitted in appropriate exotic gear, sigils, runes, etc etc etc. however, i prefer WvW. pretty much always have ever since i first discovered it a few weeks into exploring the game. i raided pretty heavily in EQ, and almost constantly in DDO.. soloed epic elite quests frequently (instanced dungeons in DDO have settable difficulty... epic elite is the hardest), and was even the first bard to solo the Thirteenth Eclipse raid in DDO (when bards were widely regarded as the game’s laughingstock worst class.)
when raiding was introduced here, my train of thought went "oh, cool. i’ll have to check it out..." to being totally turned off by the elitest bullkitten that many (not all, but many) people spewed about NEEDING TO BE a certain meta build yadda yadda ad nauseum. i was still willing to run with friends and guildies.... and now, i find out that i need to run a lot more HoT, which i’ve NEVER really enjoyed all that much, to do the final wing? barf. i’ll still run with friends and guildies if they want, but i have absolutely no motivation to try to progress through the raid chain. at all.
if it makes me a filthy casual to admit that i don’t want to put up with that crap... then so be it. just don’t step into WvW on the opposing team from me. :-P

If you can provide a video showing someone who isn’t a total scrub managing to forget to bring all that to combat and managing to die to a cannon…. Then we’ll listen to you.
i don’t have a vid, but i remember about a month ago i caught 3 people who HAD to be totally new to WvW trying to attack a tower on one of the DBLs… i know they had to be new, because… i killed ALL THREE OF THEM… WITH A CANNON. i srsly could not believe it. i was expecting them to run away. O.o

all ascended rings are unique. you’ve never been able to wear two with the same name. this is not a bug. sorry you spent the resources to acquire and upgrade 2 of them, but unless you have an alt to give the 2nd to, you can’t use it. you’ll need to find another ring with stats you like for your other ring slot. that’s Viper stats, right? is there a Viper ring with a defensive slot? that’s the way ascended rings usually work... one with an offensive slot, one with a defensive.

hate to break it to ya, but Anet has already expressed that they will be rotating the maps.. yes, they’re bringing back Alpine, but DBL will also come back...they said likely seasonal rotation
and for everyone who hates it... it really is much better after the changes. give it another shot

warmed my heart to see a tower claimed in the name of TFoR on wvwintel.com a little while ago
been lookin for claims by my server-mates while at work waiting to go home and install my new PSU

Aww that’s not irony, as was 100% technically correct about what loot dropped, because I looked it up.
Irony is when make claims on other topics that you do raids for fun, yet here we are, 19 pages later, and over 20 pages on another topic, because you and your ilk are all hung up on the rewards needing to be what they are to make raids worth doing.
Now, THAT’s irony.
Ah so you agree knowing nothing about raids, that’s a beginning.
Yes raids are fun, but rewards are still needed (cherry on the cake, you know).
where… exactly… did he agree to any such thing… please point it out

first you say every map in T1 had a queue before HoT. now you say that having queues will drive away the people returning after having been driven away by HoT. whut? if they’re coming back to see how things are post HoT, having a queue shouldn’t drive them away if they were already used to having them. i’m a little confused what you’re trying to say...
and for the record.. having no queues (while convenient to play whenever you want) is bad, as it indicates not enough players, having astronomical queues is bad because it discourages people from even trying... BUT is also to be expected RIGHT AFTER a huge new shiny patch.. but queues dying down to a manageable level is good.

well... i wasn’t there because my computer PSU died on thursday. Amazon got it to me today, tho. so hopefully... cross your fingers... that’s what my problem actually was, and not something more serious.. and i’ll be attempting to get out there tonight...

it is an interesting system. and ideally it would help... unfortunately the implementation leaves much to be desired. in my opinion the T1/T2 servers were probably loaded enough to stay as is.. on paper to Anet it probably sounded great to combine T1 and T8... give T8 more people to play with, and not increase T1 significantly... however, as has been stated more than once by multiple people... there are many people in the lower tiers because they didn’t like the blob on blob fights... some even because their computers can’t handle a huge blob. they purposely transferred to T6/T7/T8, and have now been thrown back against their will into the blob.
personally... i think something more like this would have been a bit smarter:
T1/T2- left alone
T3 +T4
T5+T6
T7+T8
or perhaps
T1/T2 unchanged
T3+T6
T4+T7
T5+T8
then the disparities between what was and what is for the lowest tiers are not so stark.
this may not be a GREAT solution, but as this is a BETA test, and they already said it will be changed much more often till they get things situated, at which point it will most likely settle down to being seasonal... maybe they can try this next... it keeps the high pop servers as they are for the most part, and more preserves the small group feel that lower tier servers had.
as for queues... yeah they suck, but this is "THE NEW SHINY™" and everyone and their uncle’s dog is going to be playing right now. the queues WILL settle down. take the opportunity to get to know the improved BLs (if you aren’t queued there too, that is, but they aren’t as popular, so you’re more likely to get on them much faster), do some dungeons or fractals to make some gold... try a new character... or catch up on your favorite show... but don’t give up hope. this is live beta. things are crazy, but they aren’t going to STAY this way. honest.

Keviin... no offense, but some of your posts are a little hard to figure out because of the way you quote people... if you hit the arrow button at the bottom right of the post you want to quote.. it preps the quote for you... it would make things a bit clearer...
carry on.

happen to you ?
. I waited for 2.5 hours and went from 146 down to 99ish before having to log out.
anyone good at mat ? 2.5 hour @ 146 down to 99 = ? How much longer do Kanebrake have to wait ? anyone got an answer ?
queue is like waiting for a table in a restaurant , if no one leave , you don’t get in
i wasn’t talking to you. i was talking to the guy being dismissive of the queues.

phsh. i don’t care. i’ve played on ET, NSP, SoR, BP, and FA. and i hate playing on EB map, so i’m less likely to hit a queue, and more likely to find smaller groups and fights of the type that i prefer. i’m just trying to make the point that not everyone is QQing about queues, so blanket telling everyone "oh don’t worry, the queues will settle soon" doesn’t address the problem that some people are talking about and makes you come off as not paying any attention to what’s actually being said.
~o hai there :D~ LONG LIVE ET
lol. you really don’t get it. it’s not about the queues. it’s not about server pride (well, for some people it is...but irrelevent to this discussion). it’s about the fact that some people purposely went to a lower tier server to avoid the huge zerg on zerg fights in favor of more small group action. and now they are forced to deal with T1 blobs. ignoring all queues and server pride.. it’s still a playstyle the wanted to get away from, and are now forced to deal with. THAT is what the core problem is with many people. but go on ignoring the problem that people are actually complaining about and keep popping off the smart kitten answers about "oh just wait for the queues to die down you whiners". you sound so smart doing that.
~o hai there :D~ LONG LIVE ET
You dont get it do you.
You don’t get it, do you? Tier 1 NA got the least amount of additional players. A relatively insignificant *number* added to their queues. These map queues are not coming from the server merge. These map queues are coming from the hyped reset night, and the vast majority of those queueing players were already on your servers.
Every server in the game had map queues last night.
It will pass, and it will do so primarily because a large amount of the people who came in last night will not (and would not, under any circumstance) play WvW long-term *and* frequently.
But, you don’t get it, do you?
no... YOU don’t get it....
ITS...NOT...JUST...THE...KITTEN....QUEUES
