Guild Wars on Consoles??

I’m in school for game development and this is a part of a presentation I’m doing. Hypothetically speaking, would any of you or your friends be interested in playing GW2 if it was made available on consoles? Once again, this is COMPLETELY hypothetical for the sake of a school assignment and there is no truth to my knowledge that ArenaNet is actually doing this.

prob not, cpu performance on consoles is still awful. need to wait until the next gen console are out. This half gen console cpu performance stinks

Did get my PC updated with new hardware and now I get FPS drops on recommended settings all the time. I upgraded so I can play with better graphics..

What I got was:

Corsair 2GB (1×2GB) DDR3 CL9 1333Mhz VALUE SELECT (2 of them)
AMD FX-6300 6C 3.5 GHz Black Edition 8MB
EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB SC Gaming
ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0

It all got installed, every driver updated, got windows 10 from 7 but still it gets lagspikes on recommended settings. It is unplayable in WvW

Do I need to upgrade something more? Not enough of something?

upgrade from what? fx-6300 is almost half a decade old. You should be buying ryzen from AMD which is 40-50% better

Loseridoit, thanks for the tips, it helped. I always had pretty low FPS while my specs seemed OK for GW 2. Overclocking my CPU did help a bit.

And thank you Swift too, ARCdps had me really on an all time low FPS, removing it helped.

well, i was wrong. your main problem is ARCdps i guess.

Either way, it seems that anet have increase cpu requirement as they added new features. Oh well.

story 100% monotonous (“Just follow your log.”), no choices given
no personalized quests (race, personality or profession don’t provide any individualized content)

Quests are very expensive to develop in every game. Are you asking Anet to double the work?

constant additions of new means of travel are getting out of hand

I am more annoyed at the camera then the new means of travel. Looking vertically quickly is a pain.

dungeons not made to scale with group size

Dungeons are designed as puzzles (Predictable bosses). As a puzzle is solved, scale does not really matter any more. All that is left is patience and time.

raids also quickly become repetitive

Define repetitive? I dont raid at all. I look at a video and could not care less.

game has become too grindy (especially with newer content)

Most of the grind is for rewards thou.

Quality performance 64 bit Mac?

There are two clients at the moment. The 32 bit is a cider(wine) wrap windows binary.

Anet release a 64 bit native client as beta. Anet will probably roll out performance improvement after they squash rendering bugs. I think it might change in a few months since I believe Jon Olson did not implement all the optimizations yet. You should take a look at the mega thread below.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/support/Feedback-Guild-Wars-2-Mac-64-Bit-Client/page/5#post6636867

I use unix servers, I grew up with linux systems prior to Windows. It fits my needs.

I dont understand why you dont use a linux desktop with an amd card. Wine + gallium 9 should have better performance than whatever mac client Anet puts out since you get all the optimizations on Anet put into Window, and native dx9 support in Mesa. Mac client will always be a second class citizen since they are running a different code path.

Nothing against Windows. I just use everything that is syncing up together, phone to watch to tablet to computer and I use unix servers, I grew up with linux systems prior to Windows. It fits my needs.

I wish Microsoft fix i/o behavior/performance and properly unify software updates. If MS fix those to problem, I would use windows more often.

That wasn’t because they moved. That was because of Bank Fraud.
I’m curious as to why Anet is in Seattle in the first place? Are there some underwater internet cables going to Asia from Seattle?
All the lines going to Europe are on the East Coast. Wouldn’t it make for faster server times as a whole if the Servers were located in NY? Or anywhere on the East Coast for that matter?
So people in Europe have to ping to the East Coast, then down to Texas, Then up to Seattle, back down to Texas, up to the East Coast and then back to Europe? Put the Servers on the East Coast plz.

There are lots of software companies in Seattle, including Microsoft and Amazon. It’s apparently a popular spot for software development, though I’ve never understood why.

Bill Gate kinda lived Seattle during his childhood.

Amazon wanted to poach Microsoft talent/experience by locating in Seattle. (cannot find the source of this claim thou)

sound like a cpu bottleneck. there is a difference between 60-70% usage total vs per core usage.

You have an 2500k. Why dont you overclock your cpu?

it should hit 4.5 Ghz on air

Character Model Quality: High

lower this setting should give slight more fps.

at source control it says my memory has 100 errors a second.

I am not sure what this statement mean. I guess run memtest on your memory to see if you need to RMA?

Life or Death in Fractals

loseridoit.2756

How do people learn fractals/raids when then the learning curve is life or death?

I’m trying to get into fractals and raids, but when each person has a specific person role to play and a single person isn’t doing their part (aka me) … the team fails. I feel intimidated to get into that part of the game because I don’t know what to do.

I’m also finding that in certain cases these are becoming a cookie-cutter approach; your team has to use a Mesmer, Druid, two warriors, and a Guardian or it will fail. There doesn’t seem to be room for the random necro or elementalist.

There are two ways to learn.

Play and die a lot or just watch other people play.

Either way, many of us die very often until we can finish task with muscle memory. You can only learn muscle memory with real time practice. Either way, all pve enemies are puzzles. Once you learn them, many of them become boring (Please delete Mai Trin).

I would admit that it is easier to learn when the content is barely released. Less elitist dictating on the type of build you are required to use.

Game crashing during Teq

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: loseridoit.2756

loseridoit.2756

I know this is a very late reply. Replying in case anyone else has this problem, as I have found a way to stop my game from crashing during world bosses. This may or may not work for all those who experience this issue, but it is worth a shot.

First of all, let me list off my complete system build.
Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
Asus ROG Maximus VII Hero
Intel i7-4790k @4.0Ghz (4.4Ghz Turbo)
16GB (2×8GB) G.Skill Trident X Series DDR3 @1600Mhz
2x Asus ROG Striker GTX760 4GB (equivalent to a GTX 970)
1000w PSU

Now as you can see, my system is well beyond the recommended requirements and should not have any performance issues while playing Guild Wars 2. I still crash about 90% of the time when doing large world bosses such as Teq, Jormag, and Karka Queen.

The solution that worked for me was muting main in-game volume while doing these high population events. Ever since I started muting my main volume, I have never crashed. It has been at least 2 years now, maybe longer, and I have yet to crash. Give it a shot and see if it works for you. If not, I’m sorry my solution was not the one for you!

Good Luck!

3 years a long time in technology. I wonder if the 64 bit client existed 3 years ago. If you are crashing on the 64 bit client, I would highly recommend that you report it to anet. Anet cannot fix issues they do not know about.

Dont waste your breath. Some things they fix sure but when Anet get this idea in their head that everything is fine despite pretty much the entire community agreeing it isnt fine, it aint ever going to be fixed. We’ve had this discussion sooooo many times in the WvW forums.

#FixTheGodkitten ACDamageAlready

Fine is a relative term. I wonder what John Smith consider is “fine.”

For one, I remember a thread where John Smith was saying low level players should sell everything. (I cannot find the thread. Unusual of me of making a claim without links). Every other forum member bashed at that idea because John inveterately locked out that low level player from crafting

I wonder if Anet will ever release what they define as fine.

question to dev's about game engine

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: loseridoit.2756

loseridoit.2756

The point was that it was disappointment. After 7 years, comparing both at stock speeds, the top single threaded benchmarks were only 30% better than what I was using. For comparison, 7 years ago was when I last upgraded, which was around a 600% increase. Single threaded performance hit a limitation, so until DX12 and the usage of at least 4 cores becomes common, there was simply no point in upgrading, especially when I could still manage 80 FPS in GW2. Most people are also not going to OC, so I was also showing that a 7 year old CPU was just as good.

Then prepare to be disappointed for the rest of your life. The future of cpu core is no longer in the tradition pipeline but specialize instructions. Look at the new Xbox One X ( pointlessly confusing name ). There are special instructions to speed up DX12. Dennard scaling is broken and dark silicon is getting worse. CPU designers will have to look at perf/watt in addition to transistor usage.

http://cseweb.ucsd.edu/~ngouldin/papers/taylor-aspdac-final-2012.pdf

Enjoy the future. Old applications will less likely become faster unless we either have the source to recompile to use new instructions or applications are dynamic link to libraries that has proper cpu dispatching.

question to dev's about game engine

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: loseridoit.2756

loseridoit.2756

This is utterly wrong. First off you’re not specifying which processors, but in general it’s wrong.

For gaming, single threaded performance is what matters. The more cores a CPU has, the weaker they are individually. People who don’t know what they’re doing may think the latest and greatest is better, but they can actually end up being weaker than a much older model. The new 10-core i9 CPUs for example are weaker than last year’s equivalent i7 4-core models. Its power is in the extra cores, which has no impact on gaming.

Personally, I have a ~7 year old i7 2600k OCd to around 5 GHz that failed about a year ago. When I went to look for an upgrade at the time, it was very disappointing to see that the most optimal CPU for GW2 (i7 4790k) at stock was actually a downgrade and was only 30% better when comparing both stocks. I didn’t bother upgrading and instead worked around the problem, so now I’m running a 3-core slightly underclocked 2600k and am still managing ~80 FPS normally and ~25 FPS at world bosses, which for comparison is down ~20-40 FPS.

Errr…. why are you comparing an OC cpu to a stock one.

Intel never regressed performance when comparing OC to OC cpus.

The new 10-core i9 CPUs for example are weaker than last year’s equivalent i7 4-core models. Its power is in the extra cores, which has no impact on gaming.

Those 10 core cpu are not marketed for gaming. They are marketed to those who use avx instructions and workstations.

loseridoit.2756

so this is what i want to know is anet going to optimize the engine for the multi-core high-mid-low end rig’s?

Because this is ridiculos a 5 or 4 year old game that runs on a engine that cant be played by the rigs of nowadays is lame im sorry but thats the cold turth i allways loved to play WvW but having all the fps breaks lag on the current day’s it aint good.

What engine do you propose? There isnt that many off the shelf engines for MMORPG.

RSI is having problem with their netcode RSI.

this is the frist time i see a game that isnt optmized for the current need for the demand of people as it also seems that we are not getting any interest by anet at all.

game good gameplay good story good but whats is that good for if people can play it decently nor on high end rigs or low rigs.

Many games already limits scope in their design. Look at bioshock infinite. Despite being in a cloud city, I got the feeling of clusterphobia

GW2 is using DX9, which makes it limited to waiting on a single core. It doesn’t matter what your total CPU usage is because only that 1 core running the primary thread matters. GW2 is already optimized for what it is and will never see any major improvements outside of a complete engine remake, which simply isn’t going to happen until maybe GW3.

rendering is rarely the bottleneck according Johan. The problem is elsewhere.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/3ajnso/bad_optimalization_in_gw2/csdnn3n/

I am guessing Anet made some terrible design but cool/fun decisions with game rules in the core of Gw2. They cant fix it unless they make a new game and break the existing game. I think Anet might completely change their condition system etc. I wonder which core component of the game is bottlenecking gw2.

Downloaded the installer for this, and it just crashes every time i run it. Everything else on my PC works fine. Other games installed fine, just not GW2. So well, I guess I’m not going to play it.
It says I don’t have enough memory, even though at the time I had 12GB free memory of 16 total. Submitted report to ArenaNet, but of course they won’t help since they are NCSoft after all.

Gw2 is just one giant binary blob. When you run it it create 2 more files, 1 giant .dat file and another file which I do not know what it does.

Just download Gw2-64.exe binary, create an director for it and run game. You dont need to install it.

Everyone talks about DX, wouldn’t be VULKAN the better choice as it’s multiplatform and would enable a Linux or Mac client without changing much compared to the PC client?

And getting some additional Mac or Linux players would be too bad?

And VULKAN even works on mobile phones, ok a game with 28gb of space would be hard on any mobile phone, but lower quality textures would be an option for that.

And as more and more players are using more mobile games and less PC, so it’s a thought to be thought.

apple never adopted vulkan.

Black screen and crashing randomly in game

loseridoit.2756

Tried this, didn’t work. I did notice that it isn’t just a blackscreen, it is my monitor saying no signal. Monitor works fine with other computers, even in game. Shutting monitor off and on doesn’t help, nor does unplugging/plugging in.

I guess undo the change or lower it. What tdr delay does is increase the time the driver is allow to hang before windows step in. It seems like, your gpu might actually be hanging. Sometimes, tdr recovery triggers when the gpu is too busy. Windows might reset it although it technically responsive. The driver just missed the window (default: 2)

I guess decrease the tdrdelay. Put it back to default if necessary.

Can you post your actual BSOD logs? PSU model? We are kinda helping you blind.

Like I said, you should report issues to nvidia.

Anyone know if it would be RAM or the GPU most likely? I am on disability, so can’t afford more than one thing. I’m so tired of this.

sounds like tdr delay.

FIrst, update the driver to make sure this problem is not fixed in a newer version

Next, reproduce the crash. Report it to nvidia as explained in this link.

Could you guys optimise your clients please? No other game than Guild Wars is destroying my computer due to constant overheating as of late.

The client is optimized whether you believe it or not. Many games are much smaller in scope than normal mmorpg. MMORPG are literally one of the hardest pieces of software in the industry as a whole. I am guessing it is eating both cpu and gpu at the same time

I’m not sure what you did, but please undo or redo it differently because I’m not willing to throw out money I don’t have on new hardware just to play your game.

I run Win 8.1 x64 on a laptop w/ Core i5-5200U, 16 GB RAM, GeForce 940M

second gen sandy bridge such as 2700k can oc 4.5 on air pretty easy. OC it much higher.

If you are not willing to oc your cpu, I guess you can buy new hardware such as ryzen or skylake. Newer cpu have a higher IPC increase at a small loss of oc ability.

Either way, the game changed a lot. I am not sure old videos are relevant because Anet have change rendering options in game. We now have a player population and model selector. The game currently might be rendering more than video is showing.

Can someone confirm if they actually ported it to a native client or if they just wrapped it up again in a modern version of 64-bit Wine ?

You should read that thread:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/support/Feedback-Guild-Wars-2-Mac-64-Bit-Client/first#post6626279

That thread tells me nothing about the underlying mechanics of the port, just the problems people are having with it with vague info from the devs.

I just checked it myself. Suprisingly, it appears to be a native port ! All of the proper frameworks are in place without a hint of Wine or Winelib. This basically means that the 64-bit client codebase, despite ArenaNet just changing a number on it, has absolutely nothing to do with the 32-bit client. :o

I think the dev is denying that it is a wrap up 64 bit client

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/support/Feedback-Guild-Wars-2-Mac-64-Bit-Client/first#post6626279

Yes, I see that now, thank you.

However: They also say that getting the OpenGL renderer in the Windows version is not going to happen (for now), which means no passthrough.

Getting a native Linux client is about 10% as likely as that, even.

Other than that annoying launcher, i wonder why would people want a native client when vulkan renderer gives a much better performance boost. Wine + vulkan > opengl + native.

Wine overhead is not that large. Most issues is that d3d to opengl translation.

https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/17x0sh/john_carmack_asks_why_wine_isnt_good_enough/

+1 for Native Client, GW2 on Wine is buggy as hell, especially if you use multiple monitors.

https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/6gns25/why_do_linux_games_have_such_a_hard_time/dirpwd4/

And Hugalolic. Native client will probably not fix multi monitors. X11 is just crap as mentioned by former VP porter jaycee_1980.

I know it’s kind of off topic, but there is no way to use the OpenGL renderer on Windows, is there? Us Wine players would really appreciate that… There’s dozens of us! Dozens!

Currently there is not. Despite OpenGL being cross-platform there are a lot of differences between platforms (available extensions, API conformance, etc). We tried it briefly but additional work would be required to get it working properly, and we already have our hands full with the macOS client.

Linux WINE players probably want to invest some time and effort in https://wiki.ixit.cz/d3d9 instead — though I believe it will not work with the proprietary NVIDIA drivers, so spring those $$$ for AMD

Those are some impressive results with Gallium-Nine. I might even get an AMD card to mess around with someday.

From my experience I can safely say it’s very much playable with an Nvidia card on Linux. FPS is very good on Medium settings, ranges between 40-90fps depending on the area and with the 64bit client there are no crashes during big events neither.

The screenshot I attached for example, shows the game running under Wine-Staging 2.0 for just a little over 7 hours straight.

its not really that impressive perf. Gallium nine is literally a dx9 implementation in mesa. I find the overall stability to be nice.

Either way, I wonder if gallium 11 will be made because I wonder if vulkan is as fast as the gallium stack

Did it help? What are your nVidia Control Panel settings for GW2? (screenshot, please) Also, are you using a 64-bit or 32-bit system?

No that suggestions of theirs did not help, and I have a 64-bit system (here’s a link to it, so you can make sure it’s a laptop like RedZebra clarified https://www.msi.com/Laptop/GT83VR-6RE-Titan-SLI.html), but I have been in constant contact with the support over the last 2 days, and maybe, hopefully, we can find a solution to my problem. If I find anything that works completely I will post it here.

For the time being, I play, crash, play again then crash… But I do have hopes, the support team have been very helpful and responsive so far.

I think Ashantara is asking if you are using the 64 bit binary. If you are using the binary from default install, then you are using the 32bit application.

I have been play the game for 4 years, this Constant Crashing only happen 3 weeks ago after the ‘WINDOWS 10 CREATOR’ update. If you don’t have win 10 you will not have this issue, so please stop telling people to update driver/hardware. Anet was try to patch this a few times, the 6/8 patch fix most of the issues, but then 6/9 patch mess up more then ever. I having crashing 5-15 min, sometimes if I change map I crash, sometimes if I use waypoint I crash. Anet really need to fix this for now this is totally unplayable for me

It is unlikely Windows 10 creators update cause the crash itself. If it was the cause, there will be a gigantic megathread warning everybody to not update.

The reason why we are pretty quick to blame hardware/driver issues is that Anet already have a gigantic Q/A team. I assume they vet all patches before distributing it to the user, but they are unable to test all configurations

Apparently windows ahci driver is not behaving properly on newer controllers and the proper raid driver needs to be loaded. It applies to all mobile Skylake systems since Intel change the power management again. Forcing windows to load the raid driver by disabling ahci fixes the issue. Linux was just caught in the crossfire.

I’d also encourage you not to suggest that some drivers are “bad” or “good” without much more specifically quantifying how you believe they are bad. It’s extremely unlikely that any potential issues with the use of the RAID vs AHCI mode for the device and the related drivers will make any noticeable difference to anyone who owns the hardware and runs windows on it.

The OP seems to be having problem with his/her swap file failing.

SWAPPING SHOULD NEVER FAIL.

If installing the proper RAID driver fixes it, then there are issues with the AHCI driver. If the driver crashes the computer, its crap. Hardware should just work.

Edit: I just want to be clear. If the os loads the driver to manage the hardware, there is an expectation that it should work. If it doesnt, it is crap on that particular hardware.

Either way, OP you should monitor the storage device.

I think it’s this one.

Actually, in my state, Gem Cards are considered Gift Cards, and are charged no tax, whether purchased online or offline (retail stores). Gift Cards are not charged tax, otherwise they would be collecting tax twice: once at the Gift Card purchase, and again when using the Gift Card to purchase items/services/etc.

Thus, no loophole. =)

the issue is that gift cards are a proxy to real money. GEM CARDs are not and is practically its own currency.

Are you a tax expert? I am wondering. If you are, then I will concede.

Or, in many cases in the US, we are not charged any tax, at all.

I can certainly say this is true in my state. When I buy a $25 Gem Card, I pay exactly $25. No tax added, which is rather surprising since my state loooooves to tax everything,

The company might be abusing a loophole with inter state commerce and internet transactions.

I believe the current law requires the buyer to pay sales tax and report it to the state.

Either way, I am not a tax expert. I only understand a little bit this complicated stuff. Go consult an actual expert.

I think vanilla Tyria was designed for a top level of rare gear with exotics being a long term goal. That they weren’t expecting the average player to be in exotics (there were no ascended back then).

for a personal opinion, i will reject that claim. Exotics had a very reasonable acquire time. Majority of the playerbase can easily acquire exotics within a few weeks to a few months.

Anet already planned to release Ascended before they even released the game.

Just crashed again, guild wars triggered it again. Set the page file to be discarded on shutdown, that appears to solve my issue. Will update if it happens again with the file being discarded. Otherwise assume that fixed the issue.

Perhaps, you should manually install intel’s raid controller driver for you laptop. I dont know where is the driver

I heard that intel ahci driver is dreadful on windows so some oem does this ridiculous thing

I am bumping this thread because I have the same issue, and I am unable to resolve it with the suggested fix. CPU freezes up, requiring a hard reboot.

I have a Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti card with an i7 7700

Windows 10

can you post your windows event logs of the freezing event?

How do I do that?

i believe the defaults for vista and up is in SystemRoot\System32\Winevt\Logs directory.

You have to post the *.evt and *.evtx files.

I just want to load those logs up on windows event viewer and find all those errors + warnings. you can take a look yourself.

win key
search evt
run evt

you can view it yourself

Either way, I am suspecting psu issues thou. I wonder if it can be other problems like tdr timeout etc. I dont wanna guess

rivatuner is not the cause because I am having this problem and I run no external programs, it just doesn’t open past the launcher in some resolutions, but if i set it to native (which never used to change anything, it used to be perfectly fine running on the other resolutions) it does open, but it goes to a black screen, but the music starts playing, and the only way to get out of it is to sign out of my computer to force the program to close (alt+f4 doesn’t work, and it lets me open the task manager, but then flashes back to the black screen so i can’t do anything after that)

its not helpful if you do not list your hardware information.

Perhaps post windows event logs?

Or, try to reinstall the driver but uninstall it completely with DDU?

I wonder microsoft mess up the driver abi a bit with the creators update. Oh well, problems with slow abi. I wonder how greg kh manages to be subscribed to windows driver mailing list.

Yes

On that note, so far I have not experienced a crash after setting the pagefile to be disregarded and reloaded on every shutdown and boot. (I restart my computer every other night.) From the time of posting, the problem appears to be fixed.

I will update if it pops up again. (after trying what was stated above)

If that is the case, you should do more extensive testing on the storage device.

You would want the storage to fixed under warranty in case anything happens.

btw, since you are discarding the page file at shutdown, i dont think it would be possible to hibernate.

Windows might not use pagefile on boot. Paging is basically swapping. It usually used when the ram full. I am a bit wondering if it causing your errors since paging shouldnt really fail.

I set it to clear it on a shutdown, and recreate on boot.

I have had GW2 open for about 2 hours now, no crashes as of yet. The dmp file is set to save automatically already.

Forced a crash with that link you provided (reg edit), Blue screen showed up, it saved the dmp file. But with my problem, it doesn’t ever blue screen. The game freezes, then a few seconds later the sound freezes, then all my monitors go dark, then I see the start up logo. It doesn’t get a chance to do a dmp file

Meh, I was thinking tdr timeout, but I cant find it in your event logs

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/display/timeout-detection-and-recovery

oh well, I will try to think something else later. I am just guessing at this point.

May I ask, did you ever check the battery life while playing.

GW2 is harsh on both the cpu and gpu at the same time. I just wanna rule out the obvious and Gw2 is draining too power from the battery while plug in.

Two things, first make a new thread Sister Xing, dont necro old threads.

Thread was already necro’d, latest post was 5 days ago.

second, I am going to pretend the RMA knows what they are doing. Did you ever check windows event logs?

Your description is not really that helpful. It can be anything. It can be the storage for all I know.

yes. I did, and they simply report a critical error, windows shutdown unexpectedly. Not very helpful either. And the error number tracks back to the same thing, some generic error.

you know, you should post all those logs. It is more helpful than getting a translation of those logs from you. Like I said, any part of the system can be a culprit. Heck, I might even ask which what is your storage device and if you ever ran an chkdsk before.

either way, you have not really posted any information about your laptop. I am not psychic and I cannot help you blindly.
