As has been pointed out, Shield of the Moon is about a heterosexual pair. I don’t remember which NPC says this, he’s in one of the 15-25 zones (I think) and is involved in wine making, but mostly wine drinking… and he called my male Sylvari female. When I corrected him, he said something to the effect of “I’m so drunk, I can’t tell my pistols from my stamens”. So yeah, as per the lore, Sylvari have sexual organs.
That said… at no point have I encountered a story where my male Sylvari is told to go rescue his boyfriend. As far as I am aware, my Sylvari’s orientation is up to me. Does he encounter homosexual Sylvari? Well yeah, he considers Caithe a friend. Does he care about that her beloved is female? No, he cares more about the fact that she’s fallen to Nightmare and is a bad person.
I don’t see my character being “forced” into any relationships against his, or as his player, my will. Homosexuals exist, in game and IRL, and either way I don’t really care. My characters orientation is my choice, and just because an NPC or another player made a different choice for their character, has no impact on me.
TL;DR version: unless the devs are saying <female character> your are now the new girlfriend of Caithe/<male character> you are now the boyfriend of the Green Knight, what’s the big deal? You aren’t being forced into anything.
All Sylvari are effectively pansexual by human standards. Including the player characters. No sylvari anywhere take into account their partner’s sexual organ when they fall in love. I think that’s what a lot of people are having problems with.
Does this mean that a straight person has to play a gay sylvari? Nooo. It just means that there is no such thing as a “straight” sylvari. Your male sylvari could only ever have girlfriends. But when you come up with a reason, you just can’t use the fact that they’re female as a reason, because no sylvari cares.
LOLL I just went to find the wolf pet a few days ago. Got slaughtered by swarms of enemy. I don’t think I went at a very good time, they were pushing our server hard. All that just for my pet. xD If only I could talk to them LOL Be like I come in peace, escort me xD My thief friend survived fine tho. I wish we had some sort of slight stealth like a camoflage, which would make sense since rangers are a wilderness survival/adventurer type class. But details for that might have to be worked out.
All worth it though. Such a gorgeous pet! and Fear rocks. Running with two wolves now
Btw, the wikipedia link is only for NON-Charmable wolves. If you click the pet wolf link, it says Eternal Battlegrounds.
We do have that. It’s a trait for when we get stunned.
Then people will complain about how similar the two classes are. Making such a big deal just because it’s called Ranger and it doesn’t match up with your definition of Ranger is quite petty. Anyone who has spent a few minutes on the wiki would have clearly known what they were getting into.
And the split and merge happened so early in development I don’t think it really made that much of an impact on how the singular final product came out.
You have a point. People will always complain.
That’s why I stated that we will just have to deal with it: pets are in to stay, as much as I dislike the concept.
I would like, yes, that the class would be called something other than ranger, because that would give me hope that in the future, a ranger class would make it into the game. (Maybe wanderer? roamer? pet-killer? one can only hope)
Now, that doesn’t mean we cannot argue and try to make the class more appealing to everyone, like I said.
I’m all in for a “remove pet, give buff” option, but I’m pretty sure Anet already stated that this is not happening. Ever. So, why not try and improve the class by giving us options? I don’t think that is complaning a hammer isn’t a drill.
It’s more like: “hey, there’s this really cool concept called ranger, and this class could aim in that direction instead of the one it’s aiming at right now, how about that?”
But that’s just it. This IS a Ranger class, just not the kind you have pre-conceived in your head. This is ANet’s ranger. And ANet has made it quite clear that their ranger is going to use a pet, and not be a high damage singular unit.
I’m particularly against getting a buff for ditching your pet. This is the class’s mechanic. And while it may not make it unique in the wide spectrum of all MMORPGs, it gives the class a unique twist within its own universe. You can’t compare the ranger pet to minions or summoned weapons because the Ranger’s pet doesn’t eat up utility in order to be used and (this is debatable at the moment) be effective. It is our mechanic. No other class gets benefits for ignoring its mechanics. The warrior, for example, was once stated by someone to be rewarded for ignoring its mechanic. This is not true. The warrior’s real mechanic is adrenaline, not the “super” attack you get once you’ve stored up enough. So all traits that benefit you for not using this attack are not rewarding you for not using your mechanic – it’s rewarding you for using it(Though “using” is used loosely for this particular mechanic). We should not be any different.
And aiming in a new direction ties back into my first statement. “Aiming it in a new direction” means “Completely different from your intent and design”. Giving us “different options” in this way, much like giving us rifles, detracts from the spirit of the class, making it loose its definition. ANet Rangers are not pure bowmen. They never were. Am I saying we should never get a class that is more of a true bowman/marksman? No. I am not. What I am saying is that as they exist now, as far as what they are and how they are meant to work should not be changed.
Good point. Next time my hammer doesn’t work like a drill, I’ll just go complain until it does, because I’m always right.
Well then it shouldn’t have been tagged “drill” then, shouldn’t it?
Maybe change class name to beastmaster and give us a real ranger in an expansion.edit: trivia. did you know that the current ranger class is result of a mix between two planned classes: marksman and warden?
maybe they should just split them up again, because throwing the two into a mixer didn’t yielded good results for anyone.
This gets me to the final point and the main reason I’m wasting my time typing this: dont ever say: “ranger is not for you” or “go play another class”. I’ve had a dev say this to me. This is almost offensive.
Just because you share Anet’s vision that the ranger is someone who would love to work in a pet shop, it doesnt mean that there aren’t people out there that are very dissapointed that they didn’t find the class that they were expecting: a true ranger, a versatile fighter more at home in the wilderness than anyone else. And that doesn’t mean having a pet. Not at all. Usually it means pets are turning into BBQ to feed said ranger.tl;dr: I hate how rangers turned out in GW2, but I know there’s no way to get rid of pets. Pet doesn’t make rangers unique. I propose letting rangers be more in control of how they wanna play with their pets (all the way from ranger-supports-pet to pet-supports-ranger). Also, I hate people that say “go play another class”.
thanks for reading.
Good point. Next time my hammer doesn’t work like a drill, I’ll just go complain until it does, because I’m always right, creator’s vision and intent be kittened.

Just gonna say this.
The Ranger’s class symbol is a paw print.
The Ranger’s forum symbol is a paw print.
The Ranger is the only class that has a permanent pet (Making them unique over other classes who can use “pets”; Our pets do not eat up our utility slots)
The Ranger’s class question is about your first PET.
Every trait line has benefits for your pets.
You cannot perm stow your pets.
Our pets give us access to many boons and conditions
Nearly every image of a ranger includes their pets.
I’m just gonna say: Ranger is THE pet class. So giving The pet class the option to go petless just feels wrong from so many points. Don’t like pets? Don’t roll the class. No other class can get 1200 range? False. Rifle Warriors have decent damage and 1200 range. The whole point of the ranger class is their pet. Other classes don’t rely as much on their mechanics? Well, that’s what makes the ranger different. When you pick a ranger you are choosing to pick a two-unit character.
You want a master of ranged damage? Roll a warrior huntsman.
Ranger in this game is a pet class. You may disagree, but in GW2, pets are what make a Ranger a Ranger.
Pet perma-stow has made the rounds several times, and as I have said elsewhere, if you choose to ignore having a a pet that SHOULD be your choice, just like a thief choosing to only have a single sword vs having an off hand. However, just like the thief losing 2 skills, Arena Net should not be responsible for undoing your “self nerf”.
If you enjoy the ranger but do not want the pet at all, use a hawk / crow on passive and ignore it. They take up VERY little screen space and will not be impacting your play that way.
However, it is ludicrous to expect a complete revamp of the class AWAY from what Arena Net intends when other classes offer a play style similar to what you are wanting. Try a thief or a warrior if you want a pet less ranger, but don’t expect Anet to completely change the dynamics of an entire class to fit your expectations when they have SO many other things that need to be addressed.
It doesn’t require a revamp of the class. It requires one trait somewhere that lets you gain a bonus while the pet is stowed as well as making stowing pets permanent (meaning they don’t come out in combat unless you call them out).
Personally, I heavily disagree with perma stow. However, what I disagree with more is the fact that you want compensation for ditching your pet. You should not be rewarded for ditching your class mechanic. And, as it’s been said before, don’t like pets? Don’t play a ranger. Everything about the ranger is their pet. Plus their pets give them awesome utility. I hate cutter-solutions like this. Instead of cutting pets, just wait until they approve them! (Speed post, so I think there might be some holes here)
I agree. Love the animations! Very childlike, so I think it fits.

Furienify.5738:
But I can’t think of a gay character in the game that isn’t sylvari. No, Faren does not count.
That’s really a failing of the developers. They haven’t ruled it out from the other species, but they haven’t given any examples either. It’d be nice to see in the other species too.
Shhh. Do you want them to add one more gay couple and see someone posting about “The avalanche of gay this game is smashing into my face and trying to turn me!”
My Norn character is gay. xP
Mine disappeared from my pet list. I tamed one – but I can’t even find it on the list of choices.
I’ve bolded all the obvious examples of massive hyperbole in your post. Honestly, you seem so utterly convinced this game is bleeding players like a severed artery all over your new MMO carpet, so why are you even asking this sort of question?
How much communication do you want? For the first week of launch, they had a day-by-day State of the Game.
1.) There are a lot of players upset about DR. 2.) There are a lot of players who are leaving because of this (we don’t have numbers but the forums are lit up over it). 3.) The implementation of DR came unplanned post launch as a response by the game studio to a problem (broken system) that did not reveal itself in beta testing 4.) Most MMOs fail, even the great ones like SWTOR. When you look at all the data and try to figure out why that happens it generally falls back on things like item 3. The studio in panic mode throwing solutions at broken systems. And trying to just keep the water out the bottom deck with no resources to focus on new content. The worked very hard to create a great game and then in haste end up destroying it. This is how great MMOs die unfortunately and I would say that statement isn’t even a point to dispute you can see it time and time again. So my question is how long before we know…
I don’t ask because I hate GW2, I ask because I love this game and don’t want to see it happen. I’m not happy with ArenaNet’s communication post launch, but that is subjective.
1. what is DR
2. even if there are a lot of posts, there are over 2 million people playing the game, and not nearly that much complaining on the forums.
3. that is not true, their are plenty of mmos that are successful, just the subscription models (like SWOTOR) have failed mostly.i hate this about new games, first people say that the developer is not updating enough to fix all the problems, and then complain about how the developer is rushing the updates and not thinking about how it impacts the game, make up your kitten mind.
Diminishing returns. Fine mats drop less the more you kill, events give less rewards the more you do in an area, and I guess there’s something about dungeons giving you less. None of which bothers me, really.
AndrewWaltfeld.4621
not to mention programming is not as simple as people seem to think it. It’s not like you can viola fix it. Programming is a complex and often painful experience debugging as you have to sift thru dozens, hundreds and sometimes thousands of lines of code to find that needle.
(Quote button ran away)
What, didn’t you hear? 2/3 of the players are coders/used to work for an MMO. Seriously. Have you seen how many times people throw that out there?
Well my character’s pistol is only interested in stamens. Period! No pistol/pistol action here, no sir, no way!
Pft. False. No sylvari anywhere care about pistols or stamens. Including yours!
We’d generally say “tore us” and “tore een”.
False.
I’m American. I say Tar-us and I’ve never needed to say taurine before, but I’d imagine I’d say it tar-in or something else. I also say My-no-tar.
And though pronouncing actual names wrong is more of a legitimate complaint, I rather like the pronunciations. I far prefer them to the usual fantasy affair.
(edited by riku.2091)
Caladbolg is starting to sound like the Red Violin from the same titled movie. Only the people using it didn’t all die.
Only most of them.
It like it, personally. It’s different.
Wow. This place is even more complainy than the Ranger thread in the Beta. And that’s saying a lot.
They finally gave you some fixes. Did it fix everything? Hardly. Would you have preferred no fixes at all?
I also love the mentality “The more disrespect we show ANet, the more they’ll do for us!” Really motivates people in all the right ways, I’m sure.
I’m playing a necro, and I like it. Meh. Thanks for the work, ANet!
You know what’s fun in PvE? Sending out an eagle to singlehandedly destroy same-level mobs. It’s fun. Sicing them on bats is even more fun. Full aerial combat!
So…are spiders gonna take over for bears now? Lotsa vitality (according to Wiki; I don’t use them) and immobilization?
I use canines heavily in PvE. Signet of stone and 10 in BM. Knockdown and cripple, so he’s usually good about staying in range.
(edited by riku.2091)
If it helps you find mats, that’s a pretty big helper. Does it?
Am I a bot?
I generally never chat.
I am not guilded.
I kill everything I see in order to get mats.
I’d go for toughness. Defense is more important.
An example is Become the Bear – you get a massive HP pool, but it gets cut down VERY fast due to the form’s almost non-existent armor-rating.
There used to be an event where said crab came back to life and attacked, but I haven’t seen that event since Beta.
…Sen-tore? I have never once heard it pronounced like that.
Tar.
Tar-us.
Sen-tar.
The stow feature is not intended to keep the pet permanently stowed, as rangers are not meant to be without their pets as far as gameplay is concerned. Whenever you take damage, it comes out. I think zoning does too.
I know it’s petty, not important, but is it just me, or do the images behind Beastmastery and Wilderness Survival look like they should be switched?
Now it says there’s a transaction in progress. Anyone else have that?
Of course it just had to happen during my first delve into PvP.
I’m just going to say that Sylvari have no sexual organs, and thus, no sexual relations. I don’t care if someone said they do, because that’s stupid.
But since they’re plants, they likely pollinate. Maybe that’s what all those fireflies lurking around the Grove are.
Congratulations. You called a Dev stupid. ._.
They can have physical sex. But it doesn’t make babies.
I know that ANet said they couldn’t interbreed, buuut…yeah. I wonder too. I’m guessing it happens.
How would an increased time commitment decrease the feeling of dungeons being a grind?
Omfg, are you a Fanboy undercover or something?. why are u asking all these questions.
Isnt it obvious?
Yeah, I feel it just becomes a longer grind.
How can it become a longer grind if your enjoying it? instead of rushing through the same dam’n thing for hours… As far as i know “Grinding” means that you do the same thing over and over again…? am i wrong?
You think just because I’m spending more time on something, I’m enjoying it?
How would an increased time commitment decrease the feeling of dungeons being a grind?
Omfg, are you a Fanboy undercover or something?. why are u asking all these questions.

Yeah, I feel it just becomes a longer grind.
Don’t say anything to negative in the forums (even if its legitimate and not trolling)….or itskittenkittentime from most the community…
Don’t say anything positive, or the negative people will tell you that you’re hooked into the matrix.
Probably in Elona.
Have you ever played SWTOR and been to their forums when the game launched? That was the most obnoxious community in an MMORPG. The fanatics of that game steered the developers into not taking action on the problems the game had until it was too late. I even saw people report a player for posting a link to the unsubscribe page while unsubscribe button was broken! That is obnoxious defense. Actually willing to get in the way of other gamers just to stop them from quitting the game.
But that doesn’t excuse the hostility on this forum, it only gives an example of what can happen if people defend even the flaws of a game.
I know I’ve fallen victim to zealot-ing in this game’s favor, but I try to keep my zealous-yness slightly fact-based.
I think right now, though, it’s just a cloud of confusion. Plus the different groups of people posting.
Some people from other MMOs are coming here and finding things they weren’t expecting. Some of those get angry, instead of properly learning the mechanic/gameplay. Some of those then come here and complain. The few that water down into the last step are usually pretty mad.
Another group is usually well-intentioned, with the opinion of the game is new, and a lot of these problems are not really problems, but parts of the game that simply heavily differ from others. They will vehemently guard these aspects, and can often fail to tell the difference between “bug” or “innovation”, and persecute both equally as someone “just not getting the game”.
Rarer are those who post good things, and just try to have fun and ask questions.
The rarest are those who CAN tell the difference between innovation and bug, and construct a very through, valid piece of constructive criticism without insulting ANet or other players.
Just my thoughts and observation.
Historically Guild Wars fans have always been extremely touchy about other MMO’s, to the point where mentioning WoW on guild chat was forbidden. I never quite understood that insecurity. The original Guild Wars was a very good game.
To be hipster? I dunno. I think it’s more “We don’t WoW suggestions because” …meh. I played WoW for 3 months and lost interest. I can’t say I consistently played GW1, but I would play it in small bursts for 6 years after I bought it.
If you walked into Street Fighter IV’s forum and blathered on about how much the game sucks because it’s nothing like Tekken 6, you’d rightfully be met with hostility.
People are doing pretty much exactly that on these boards. Relevant criticisms take a back-seat to uninformed consumers whining about wanting this game to be a carbon copy of either WoW or GW1.
Actually, this is the problem right here. People using this huge strawman against any critic of the game. Obviously we’re all playing this game, and not WoW or GW1. There’s something about it that motivated us to pay US$60, a sizable sum, and spend precious time playing it. That doesn’t mean WoW and GW1 don’t have worthwhile features worth bringing up when discussing this game.
All you’re doing here is painting everyone as swine who can’t appreciate your pearl of a game. THAT is how communities are ruined.
I’ve started to think of MMO communities as gangs.
Complete sucking-up or death.
And the gods help you if you step into another MMO’s territory (forum).
How will games ever improve if only positive feedback is allowed and anyone with criticism should “just move on”?
This makes no sense to me.It’s important to note that they probably shouldn’t have called this Guild Wars 2 because it is nothing like the 1st game. Can’t blame people who loved the 1st game only to be shocked at how watered down the 2nd game is in terms of complexity.
Let’s dissect this post to see what points are made.
1. Not like first game
2. Some people who liked the first don’t like this one
Now let’s see which points were offered to remedy these problems that work within the game’s intended parameters.
1.
Huh. Alright, let’s see what was offered in general.
1.
…Really, then? Alright. To be fair, let’s look at all your posts and see what you offered.
1. …
I just read through all of your posts. And guess what? A whole lot of complaining with absolutely no feedback on how to make their game better. Constructive criticism isn’t just “I hate this”, or “I hate this and this is why”, it’s “I hate this, this is why, and here is a suggestion on how to improve it”, without a suggestion, to them, they have to keep changing things until they somehow stumble onto the right answer.
What have you done on this thread?
1. Presented your opinions as facts
2. Complained when someone pointed this out to you
3. Reported someone for trying to explain his problem with you in the hopes misunderstandings could be cleared up.
(edited by riku.2091)
You can’t go running to hide behind “talking about the game”.
I stopped here. Please stop trolling and talk about the game. This is what the forums are here for, for people to share their opinions. If you don’t like them too bad.
Lawful evil plays a hard game. Chaotic good, response?
Chaotic good versus Lawful evil. Who will win? Definitely no one’s time or dignity, that’s for sure.
Crisu, why would we do that when map chat in every zone in this game is just as bad as barrens chat?
This is why I get hostile.
Hey, you there. Troll. Yes, you. I know what you want. I’ll give it to you! In fact, I’m already giving you the attention you deserve. Try a little harder. I might get mad. C’mon. I know you got a good one.
So anyone who disagrees with you is a troll?
Great community, that.
False.
A troll is someone who posts inflammatory comments merely for the sake of posting things to outrage others and elicit a response. Which is pretty much all of your posts.
Now that that is out of the way.
…Yeah, pretty much. I have to be right. Anyone who says otherwise is an idiot. Same goes for their feelings towards me. So we’ll fight with no clear winner and two losers. It’s a beautiful circle. I call it a forum discussion.
I…don’t remember that. And I was in every beta weekend. And none of the BWE or stress test pet lists had them listed. Are you sure you aren’t thinking of a crimson Moa? Regardless, no Moa exist with that ability. To My knowledge, anyways. I know birds have swiftness.
Golden Moa pets do not exist. Just check your in-game pet list. If it’s not there, you cannot tame one.
I thought about this character some more, and about the story with him. And I think it could be much better even with just little changes. Sure, they would have to redo some voice-over lines to make that happen.
So basically the idea is to make your character a full mentor for him, you could even be stay lower in the hierachy than him (which would just make it more interesting that he is your superior, but still you are the mastermind who plans everything).
Most players meet him around the time you also lose your mentor from the orders, so it would be great when you now become the mentor yourself. That would make it still feel like the story is about your character. So the idea to visit the pale tree should be the one your character suggest Trahearne, who should be the the struggling figure who don’t know what to do with himself. It should feel like he does become the leader of the orders just because you courage him to do so (maybe even making it more clear that you would like to do that yourself, but since you already have chosen an order you think he could be the one who does that under your guidiance, which some could read that your are some kind of puppetmaster pulling just stings).
So, it would have been nice to see more emphasis on the player character now being the mentor after you had two mentors (the one from destinies Edge and the one from the order). So making it a full circle in which the player could feel good about the new role s/he got into. It would feel like one had grown up now, helping others… what is in someway how the hero’s journey normally ends.
And one could have for a expansion a struggle between your character and Trahearne, maybe he starts to become arrogant and you have to stop him then or whatever.
So, in my opinion the proplem is part him being boring and that the story isn’t about your character, which it should since it is called personal story. Give us a reason to care for him and it would feel much better.
I am glad that someone has finally given some really good, well-thought out criticism, and not just some snarling about how the character sucks and you want him dead.
Well, then I’d suggest Speccing mainly into Marksman and Wilderness survival, and toss 10 into Beastmastery(By level 80, I mean, not all right now). Go towards equipment with power or toughness. Condition damage might be good if you want a little added flavor for your traps. Pick up entangle as your elite.
But maybe someone who plays the same style could be more specific. I’m using a condition build, so I’m just making educated guesses here.
It’s been a problem since BWE 1.
Well, you’ll probably get a lot of posts about this, because it’s mostly true:
True DPS builds (High damage, low defense) pretty much do not exist. Trying to go glass cannon will get you killed a lot more than you killing a lot.
You need to mix it up a little. And your playstyle heavily factors in – specifically, do you prefer long-range with a melee panic button, or the other way around? How are you with your pet?
I’m gonna say I agree with the fact that we needed a unifying force in the story, and that is what we got.
I don’t understand the hate for Trahearne. I liked him.
And instead of killing him or retconning him, I’d prefer they just…maybe redo some lines, and give him further depth. I mean, jeez, some of you guys just sound like rabid dogs cause someone else you consider “boring” got center stage. o.o Most of you do make some decent points.
I really don’t understand where this argument of “Rangers shouldn’t have access to Rifles – or firearms at all – because they are nature oriented.” I mean: they use swords don’t they? Aren’t swords crafted using refined metal? Should Rangers be limited to Torches and Warhorns alone?
Rangers have a naturalistic flavor to them but it is not their definition. I know not everyone likes their rifles mixed with their mental image of Ranger. But then I don’t see why Mesmers – a magey class focused around screwing with enemies and wasting their efforts on clones – should have access to the Greatsword as a weapon; this doesn’t mean the Greatsword doesn’t work as a Mesmer weapon or “fit”.
We already covered the swords. Strider didn’t go around headshoting people with a rifle. He DID go around with swords. Dagger poisons, and Torch burns. Two different conditions.
And…uh, yeah. It kinda is their definition. Rangers are to nature as Engineers are to technology. Think of this. There are two firearms, and two bows. Each ranged family has a member based on speed, another on power.
Warriors can use longbows and rifles(Both power options), while Thieves can use shortbows and pistols(Both speed options).
Rangers use shortbows and longbows(Power and speed option).
Engineers use pistols and rifles(Power and speed option).
I believe someone mentioned that ANet did make a statement on this – Rangers don’t get pistols and rifles, and Engineers don’t get bows. Why? Lore, and because of overlap. I can literally think of nothing that could justify giving us another skillset, since we have everything we could want covered through weapons and pets. Whether or not it’s perfect is a matter of patching, not giving us a new weapon.
" Not sleeping with anything that moves."
~Grin~ well seeing their plants that might not be the right phrase to use.
Such a pity that arenanet went with male/female sylvari apart from the gripes it seems to be causing for some it misses the huge unique RP potential of having a single sex race
Eh. I like male/female, as it gives way more customization and personality choices.
