I’d have to disagree with this idea due to the fact that you’re missing out on a whole other perspective. I.e players who have earned these skins or have had the money to afford them feel a level of prestige amongst the community. Some skins signify ones hard work or even just basic participation in events that took place before newer players started to arrive. Please stop pushing for the idea of “everything for everyone” because that’s not how mmos should work. If I played gw2 at launch and got an exclusive skin during a one time event it means I invested time to obtain this item and would be degrading if it was just handed out to new players. It’s just a matter of loss of prestige.

This is also coming from a player who never had any fancy back wings or jet packs or horn tonics or whatever. I just belive people are entitled to exclusive skins because there is sentimental value behind them.

As someone who played all the betas and was present for Halloween 2012, Fire and Frost, and Southsun I can attest that it did not take time or effort to obtain these “exclusive” skins. It took RNG. I played the heck out of the first Halloween because I enjoyed it, but never got one of the Halloween skins. Half of my guild mates got precursors during Southsun, but I did not. And I farmed the Molten dungeon like nobody’s business but still never got the molten backpack. Getting these items does not mean you played longer or better than anyone else, only that the die came up for you. Furthermore, since many of these skins are purchasable on the trading post, there isn’t even any prestige involved. So what, exactly, is the point of denying people the ability to earn these in game?

1. Are we going to see more AI improvements? Creatures still don’t scatter from AoE as well as they did in GW1

2. Do creatures have fields of vision or can they detect players 360 degrees? Can some creatures ‘see’ farther than others?

3. Will we ever see conditions and elements vary for different creature types? Dredge currently are immune to blinds but fire elementals can take fire damage, ice elementals ice damage, etc.

4. When an ettin swings a club at you, what is the size and shape of the damage ‘field’? Is it hewn tightly to the club? Is it a tube around the club? A moving box? Or a cone in front of the creature that simply activates when the ettin swings the club through it?

At least 90% or more of the people doing Teq know what to do; no mechanics were changed.

The mechanics have changed a little. The poison stacks are now brutal, making the fingers more of a threat than ever. More attention needs to be paid to taking these down to allow the zerg to survive. The north turrets now need to cleanse the zerg, but even that is not enough to keep up. The crit box is reachable by most or all fingers, so critting Teq puts you in dire jeopardy if you don’t have a dedicated team burning down the fingers.

I think the Teq changes are an improvement. For the first time in a long while Teq is actually a challenge. Some people are already beating him. By the end of the week I believe it will happen more than half the time. By the end of July it will become routine again.

In the short term, the players unwilling or unable to adjust skills, tactics or thinking will be unable to beat him. They will fall away and leave the skilled to work out the winning strategy. The fair-weather Teq fighters will then slink back and reprogram their robotic actions with the new commands.

So if you buy a t-shirt today at Target for $20, then 2 years later, random person A buys the same T-shirt that is on sale for $10, then Target is being unfair? They are not getting more value than you, you’ve been playing this game sans subscription fee for x number of years. In that time you have managed to accumulate more in-game resource than they have. Experienced content that have now been permanently removed that they can’t experience as a new player. Given the chance to obtain skins that are now no longer obtainable. Received the LS2 updates for free, while they would have to pay around $20 to unlock all of that.

Your arguments don’t even make any sense anymore, that T-Shirt at Target would never be ‘free’ 2 years later, it would still cost something, the core game now evidently does not cost anything for new players if they buy the expansion, and yes they do get more value then me, they will ALSO get to play the game subscription free for years to come, seriously your entire argument is “You got to play for longer, that is your reward” which makes NO sense whatsoever, if -you- are happy with that as your reward for being a loyal customer and supporter of the game then fine? Good for you?

One look over the forums suggests that the majority of said customers are not, so we being the majority and you being the minority, please explain how ‘everyone’ is wrong and only you and a few select individuals are ‘correct’.

If you don’t actually enjoy playing the game, then why are you even here?

Wow…really, I mean it really is not that often I find someone either this horrendous at logic or just lacking the ability to read before posting.

Not once did I say I do not enjoy playing the game, not once did I mention anything in relation to my enjoyment of the actual game, only about this whole expansion, free core game and price situation…seriously, I’m starting to think you are just trying troll now.

ok let me give you a better example. If you buy a car for $20k today, then two years later a new version of the same car (the base game) is being sold for $15k, but this new model comes with better seats, improved headlights/braking whatever (the expansion). Were you ripped off? No you were not, you have used that car for two years as a mode of transport. You got to use that car to go to some one-off festival last year that will never happen ever again. You got to use your car to go on a road trip with some friends, if you didn’t have that car you would’ve had to rent a car or go hitchhiking instead etc. In the same way the game has given you x years of enjoyment. It allowed you to enjoy content that is one-off and will never come back. You have got your money’s worth in the form of experience.

It’s more like this.

You go out and buy a car for $20k. You drive it around for three years and enjoy the heck out of it. Each maintenance you take it back to the dealer to show your loyalty. Eventually you decide to add something extra. You go into the dealer to add a camping trailer for another $20k. While there you see another person buying a camping trailer for the same price but he doesn’t have a car so the dealer throws in a free one. Sure, the free one is three years old but, dang, it’s free. You look at the dealer and say “What do I get for being a loyal customer all these years.” The dealers says “Nothing. Only the new customers get the perks.”

gw2 is a great value but they should have been able to understand that people do not like feeling like someone else is getting a better deal no matter how good the deal they are getting is or that they aren’t getting something they are paying for. Its a human behavior problem more then the value proposition that I think most are upset about. It was just careless packaging on their part. Logicaly gw2 is a great value being subscriptionless.

There is also the assumption, generated by both GW1 precedent and other MMOs, that an expansion with new classes should come with a character slot to put that new class into. Veteran players need to shell out an extra $10 or delete one of their existing toons. Since toons get gifts as they age, this is a painful thing to do and most will avoid it. So the veterans will end up paying $60 for an expansion and one slot while new players will pay $50 for an expansion and five slots.

OK. But a new player is getting 5 characters slots and the expansion at $50 while existing players get the expansion only. In other words, if I and my new player friend buy the game on the same day, he gets more than I do for the same price.

Well, your new player friend would have to level up, and do a bunch of story missions, and gear up, and learn how to play. Where as a Vet you can just port to Maguuma and go to town, learn masteries and such.

Why does it matter that my friend has to level? I am talking about what is being delivered for the purchase price.

The low-level areas became a problem with the NPE. With the locking of traits they felt the need to weaken the enemies. Now the down-leveled players knock them over with a puff of air. Hopefully, with the new trait system, they’ll be able to restore the enemies to their former glory and they’ll last for a few fractions of a second longer. Either that or properly nerf the down-levels so that they don’t make the lower level characters irrelevant.

You do realize they don’t need to completely finish HoT before release date, right? They need to have the Revenant, the specialization and masteries frameworks, the first 1-2 areas and probably guild halls. Everything else can be released on a Living World type cycle of every 2 to 4 weeks.

Stronghold and the WvW changes are outside of HoT and their release dates need not be linked to HoT at all.

Yes. it’s a sucky name. But Anet have said they would like to see all professions have all weapons at some point, which means lots of specializations to come. Perhaps the cool name you have come up with has already been tagged to another spec.

Anyway, if you don’t like the name then don’t use it. I will continue calling my guardian a guardian, even if I specialize. And if I see someone in chat or LFG saying they are a “DH”, my mind will translate that to “designated hitter” and I will happily hum along.

I hope the next is open. I farmed every day for 2 solid weeks and didn’t get a portal stone, and I am not the only one in my guild who did the same. There were 4 people in our guild that got the portals with one guy getting two of them. Of those 4, 3 of them only played in Maguuma Wastes for a few hours before getting theirs. I don’t think any of us are willing to go through that grind again.

“Most games you go out and you have really fun tasks occasionally that you get to do and the rest of the game is this boring grind to get to the fun stuff. I swung a sword. I swung a sword again. Hey, I swung it again. That’s great. We just don’t want players to grind in Guild Wars 2. No one enjoys that. No one finds it fun.”

Revenants have only 5 skills for each Legend?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: shogei.8015

shogei.8015

The revenant is a different type of game play from all other classes. They have a set of 5 skills linked to their legend and those are not mutable. That is just how it plays. It’s not a bad way to do things, it is just different. Just like an ele is different because it has 4 different weapon skill sets attached to their weapon. Or the engi is different because they have one weapon but can swap in kits if they have them equipped. If they don’t have kits equipped, then they can’t switch out their weapon skills at all. So be it.

It seems to me they have balanced the “locked in” set of utility skills with rapid recharge and powerful effects. Some people may not find the revenant much fun due to the limitations, others will find ways to be very effective in their legend swapping and weapon combos and will have a blast.

it’s to prevent you from spamming the globes, the second minor still “destroys” them but this time you actually profit from it because you pull them in to get the heal.

without the 2nd minor (which you will have all the time anyway because you will have full traitlines all the time) you would just have to walk through the globes to get the heal.

If you are below level 80 you wouldn’t have full trait line, which is likely the only time this will matter.

Multiple Portal Drops

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: shogei.8015

shogei.8015

..is the common answer. Frankly, it’s as incriminating as pleading the 5th but still, it doesn’t prove you did it but it makes others feel even stronger that you might have.

Basically, what I’m saying is it’s not very helpful, is of no comfort, and only makes people worry about the underlying code of the game more.

Why does the fact that the RNG is random incriminate Anet? The truth is that you don’t want a uniformly random system (which will occasionally yield low-probability craziness like one guy getting 5 drops), you want a system that favors you by giving you what you want. Fairness isn’t people getting rewarded by the RNG when they think it’s appropriate, it’s having a uniform loot table that applies to every player.

Nobody has given any compelling reason (“low-probability outliers exist” is not compelling) to believe that the system systematically favors any individuals or groups.

It’s just QQ that they didn’t get what they want.

There’s a multitude of things it could be telling, from being unfair to cheap. The point isn’t aimed at any particular thing, from my perspective. I have no vested interest in changing the system but I’ve also got no vested interest in keeping the status quo.

Labeling players who encourage discussion as QQers doesn’t help, just adds to the toxic behavior of the forums in general.

As for the portals, I could care less. I’ll likely be gone or busy when the beta tests happen anyway, but I find it lacks care to put such a task as random lottery. It doesn’t discriminate between those that have a passion for the game and the bot so just gets a lot shot in.

So maybe it is that a truly random system is the root of the problem. Leaving too much to chance rather than rewarding merit might be something to explore. Like, what if dodging only had a chance of evading damage rather than putting the merit of skilful dodging in your hands?

This is the problem with how this whole situation is being framed: beta access is not about rewarding people. If it was about rewarding people, then it would be a gem store purchase or reward for some sort of achievement (or achievement point total). No, randomly (and that’s the key word) giving out beta keys to players in a certain area is about getting a diverse group of testers to rigorously test an unfinished product on a large scale, but restricting that access to people who have access to the new areas and are motivated to actually deal with what would probably be a buggy and unfinished product.

The comparison to Dodging is very, very wrong. This is a mechanism for selecting beta-testers. It has no effect on game play. It has nothing to do with merit. The only metric that one could feasibly measure fairness with is “does every loot drop in SW and DryTop have the same chance of dropping a Portal?”, and nobody has offered anything but baseless conjecture, fallacious arguments, and spineless “something could be wrong” arguments to say that somehow the RNG system has to be unfair, because they didn’t get a Beta Portal (“And that guy got 5! OMG it’s rigged!”).

The only reward that we should expect from this beta portal event is a rigorously tested, relatively bug-free Expansion at launch. That’s it.

Except that Anet MADE it a reward. They could have just sent random emails, like they’ve always done before. Instead they made it a prized drop.

If it was about getting a diverse set of players then the portals wouldn’t be concentrated in the Maguuma Wastes, which attracts only a sub-type of players. If it were about getting useful testers, then they would have an application system where you tell them why you would be a good tester. Instead they turned it into a public lottery where players can grind for literally days without getting the touted REWARD.

My thoughts on the Beta Item

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: shogei.8015

shogei.8015

My point is, I’m not liking it because of the Portal i got, I’m liking it because i can take my chances affecting the RNG, EG: Do nothing = no chance, Do Something = A chance, Do something more = Even more chance.

Rather than waiting for a RNG system to pick for me.

That’s the problem.

You see it as “Doing more-> More chances”.

But in actuality, like with any other random thing, the result is what matters.

If there’s just a single one-time source, you try, you may or may not get it. That’s just luck.

But if you may keep trying, the more you try without getting it, the more it feels like you are wasting your time and efforts.

It’s like buying a single lottery ticket vs working for hours with a little chance to get paid for your time and effort.

Which one do you think will feel worse for most people when they get nothing in return?

Oh my god that’s the most funny thing i’ve read in all this thread. The OP is right, you get better chances as much as you play, every drop is a lottery.
So all of you didn’t get it, stop whining . This time you didn’t get it because you didn’t tried hard enough. All the players that were playing with me got one.
Next time they do something like this try harder.

Nonsense. There are people who have played for hours upon hours without getting anything. There is no “try harder”.

And is it really too confusing to add buttons for 200/100/50/25 gems? Buying less that 400 gems was too difficult for new players? What new player has 75 gold? I have been playing for 2 years and I have never dropped 75 gold (or more) at a time for gems.

RNG as a concept: Discuss

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: shogei.8015

shogei.8015

As someone who has played the game from beta, I must say the RNG in GW2 is cruel. I took part in the first Halloween, the Lost Shores, Flame and Frost, Aetheblade, etc. I have none of the 2012 Halloween skins, none of the Lost Shores minis, no jetpack, no nothing. Others in my guild got some of these. One guy got all of them as straight drops without playing an hour longer than I did. The best I have ever gotten is a Risen Hyalek from Tequatl, despite running it so many times I have lost count.

Pure RNG is bad, bad, bad. Weighted RNG is merely bad, bad. There will still be people who get nothing, nada, no matter how much they play. I think there should always be an alternative way to get things. The lucky can rely on RNG, the normal can get the occasional hurray, the rest of us are given a reward if we are willing to work for it.

Ascended rings, for example, can be either dropped or purchased. You could tweak the probabilities or prices to make it more challenging, but at least there would be a mechanism for people to turn to if they are cursed, like I am.

You can still leave BLT chests as pure RNG since those are a lottery lockbox to begin with.

The items become somewhat less than prestigious when you consider the RNG involved and that they can be sold.

I have played GW2 since beta. I went through the original Mad King mini dungeon countless times and never got a skin drop. I went through the original karka attack on LA and all the events that followed. I never got one of the rare minis. I went through the molten and aetherblade dungeons over and over and never got a jetpack or mini.

In other words, all the items mean is that the player had gold at some point, not that they were at the event. I say bring them back and give us another shot at them, hopefully in a way that we can earn them rather than just roll the dice.

Proposal Overview
There should be a way to send mail to all guild members.

Goal
To notify all guild members of changes within the guild or other matters that affect or apply to the membership

Functionality
This would appear as a mail in the user’s inbox with the name of the guild as the sender. To prevent spamming, the ability to send mail should be bought with influence and merits. An officer with messaging ability would activate the guild mail and be presented with a dialog box similar to the current mail composer dialog. They could enter a subject and mail message that would be subject to the same constraints as a current in-game mail. They would not have the option to attach items or coins. Sending the message would burn one of the guild’s built guild mails.

Risk: A guild with influence to burn could abuse this by spamming users, despite the cost.

To be able to notify people of a current guild event, change to guild message, or to summon them to help in WvW.

Functionality
This would be in the form of a whisper or guild chat with the name of the guild as the sender. To avoid spamming, the ability to send these pokes should be bought with influence and merits, with a max of 3 or so stacked at a time. An officer with message permissions would activate the built poke and be presented with a dialog box. They could enter a message up to 100 characters and send it. The poke would appear in the chat of all online users. It would not queue or be otherwise stored for users not online. Sending the poke would burn one of the guild’s built pokes.

Risks
A guild with influence to burn could abuse this by spamming users, despite the cost.

Firstly, thanks for responding to this problem is such a positive manner.

I really think that the problem is being blown out of proportion. Not in the effects that siege trolling can have on a server but by the numbers of people actually involved. On my server we have 2 identified siege trolls who operate at different times of the day. Thats it. If every server had the same amount thats what 60 people?

Do we really need a new, comlicated system brought into place to deal with these 60 people (across all servers)? Any changes bring with them the risk of creating new (maybe even worse) situations, or new unseen ways to troll.

What really needs to be sorted out is the reporting system. I can understand that the present system is time consuming for the GM’s involved. What needs to be done is for you to specify what exaclty you feel siege trolling is and set up a means for the wvw community to be able to report these people to you in a way that simplfies the processus.

You say you do not want the “banhammer” to fall. Why? Make it very clear, set up the rules, give people the correct tools to report (this could be via a video or screenshots) and then deal with them by simply banning them from wvw. Its your responsibilty to set this up so that your game can be played by us in the way you want.

There is no need to create a brand new system to deal with a very small minority of people who disturb the game for the vaste majority. Any new system would affect the whole player base, this is not needed.

And here is is in a nutshell. There are reporting systems for verbal abuse, botting, scamming and other harmful behavior. Why can there not be a simple report for griefing? There are not that many trolls out there and they could be culled pretty quickly if there was an enforceable standard of behavior. These people are misusing a game mechanic to affect a competitive outcome. How is this acceptable? Any programmer time spent on these trolls should be devoted to automated collecting of statistics on their behavior once reported, not on systems that burden the rest of us.

I really believe the easiest solution is using a system thats already in place. Trolls, as someone mentioned, usually travel to a server specifically to troll..using lower level, non-dedicated alts. Therefore, just use the achievement system and ranking in a way that limits WHO can place siege at all…..for instance, a new achievement,,, “x” player has shown server dedication by taking x number of keeps, etc….trolls don’t really fight against their home server after all….

Also, when you start a new job you have a probationary period…why can’t that be implemented into wvw in some way…again,,,using achievements or rank? Player x joins wvw,,,has to walk dollies, refresh siege, etc, x number of times ,,,,or something equivalent to a probationary period showing server dedication….earning rights,,like siege placement.

Unfortunately, this is simply not true. Some trolls are uplevels on new accounts, many others are full level 80s with 14k achievement points. You shouldn’t be able to earn the right to troll by playing the game.

It would likely help if you listed your equipped armor and gear, including any skins you have applied and any foods or wrenches you are using.

Before the season began there was a lot of discussion in my guild about whether the lack of a server transfer cooldown would enable trolling. I think we have seen our fears borne out. Strategic trolling could be greatly reduced by limiting WvW access after transfers, regardless the length of the season.

Jerk trolling still would not be affected.

My idea is, that the commander (only) is allowed to dissipate (not sure if this is the correct word) the unwanted sieges. The wasted supplies would go back to your owned keep or tower if it was placed there, but not in the openfield and not to the player.

I don’t like the idea of debuffs for building sieges, that will only hurt defenders, not the trolls.

Then all the troll needs to do is buy a commander tag. They can then go into your carefully sieged garrison and despawn everything, wasting the blueprints used to build them.

One small tweak, perhaps, would be to not allow flame rams to be created inside a tower, camp or inner keep (SM & Garrison). At least force the griefers to use something that has a modicum of value.

I wouldn’t want to see this. My ram-master guardian can toss a flame ram down and defend a camp. I just trait up my burning and cook anything that comes at me.

Con’s-Like above there are trolls with commander tags that could tag up just to cancel however that is an obvious action that people will see, the popping of a tag right next to you.

This would help alleviate the problem.

Being obvious does not solve the issue. We have trolls who gladly shout in map chat what they are doing. What is frustrating is having no recourse. They can stand right in front of you and toss siege or jump a golem off a cliff and you can’t stop them.

I could accept the idea of an automated reporting system. If enough people report a person they gain a “dishonor” debuff for 60 minutes. During this time they cannot spend supply and cannot pilot a golem. They will still be able to drop siege. That way trolls cannot dishonor commanders into uselessness; commanders normally rely on the zerg to build anyway. Furthermore, if you report more than 3 times in 60 minutes you gain the dishonor debuff yourself. That will help limit people to report only the trolls. This system would protect the mechanics of the game without being overly punitive.
