The difference between Need and Want

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I agree to an extend. Though I have to point out that “It’s optional, you have HAVE to do it” is the worst excuse for a problem and I’m sick of hearing it.

Keep in mind that the entire game is optional.

Your grievance with the use of the word “optional” as an excuse to the problem comes from your misunderstanding of the exact use and context of the word “optional” when we apply it to things in guild wars 2.

When we say that it’s “optional”, we mean, “you do not need to do this first in order to do or see any of the content in the game.” You do not need ascended gear in order to complete explorable dungeons. You may need ascended gear to do some later levels of fractals, but later levels are not considered new content, they are the same fights with lower tolerances on mistakes; ascended gear is not necessary for Fractals lvl 1.

Notice, this sort of system where the best gear is unnecessary to complete certain content is not present in all games. In vanilla world of warcraft, epic gear was not optional. There were simply some fights in the later dungeons that your group simply had no hope of beating without farming up epics from previous dungeons.

But in Guild Wars 2, the best gear (and the best skins) are not necessary in order stand a reasonable chance of defeating all the content in the game. Thus, they are optional.

This usage of “optional” is not the same at all as the “optional” you use when you say “the entire game is optional”.

You NEED ascended gear to progress your character to max stats. All the stuff you listed are usually things people do in order to accomplish the ultimate gamer goal, maxed out stats. If you can recognize that playing any game is a want, then you should be able to realize that inside of a want there are needs. If those needs aren’t met then the person no longer wants. With games one of the needs is character progression.

GW2 does horribly at cosmetic progression(worst armor design) so they added ascended. Instead of just making ascended gear have an agony slot and no increase in stats, which would make it truly optional to anyone not interested in fractals, they went for stat progression. Now people are forced to grind content(dailies, missions, fractals) in order to fulfill that ultimate gamer need of max stats.

When that need cannot be fulfilled in a fun/timely manner people will quit the game because they no longer want to play it. Blockading that progression behind grinds and time gates is absolutely poor game design trying to exploit the need for progression. Not only that it hurts character variety because people don’t want to try new specs/stats combos because of the time sink that is ascended. Laurels, commendations, and Pristine fractal tokens(least of the bunch) are terrible progression systems for a set of gear that should have never been in the game.

Apologies or at least explanations please.

Who cares?

I have 15 alts. I run Zone 1 on each of them daily, if I feel like it and time permits. So far I have one found skin and one bauble-purchased skin. I’ll have one more bauble-purchased skin today.

If someone has dedicated that much time to deleting and re-creating alts, then running again and again, I don’t see a problem with it.

The nice thing about SAB is that it actually is accessible to everyone who wants to play it, the way they want to play it, for as long or as little as they want to play it. It has a chance to get nice things, and a guarantee of getting nice things.

There are plenty of things to be elitist about and angst over who has something you do or who didn’t earn it the way you think they should have. Please don’t bring it into this.

The main warrior questions

in Warrior

Rommy.9875

We’re going to be working on a lot of Warrior stuff in the coming patches. But will we be changing things, in the OP’s words, “in a few days”? Nope. We have to wait for patches to move through the system of developing content, refining it, iterating on it, getting it tested, and then getting pushed to live.

Warriors are very strong in PvE, and they’re struggling in PvP – we know this. Contrary to popular belief, we play our game, in all formats, and we talk to player experts in all formats. We also read the forums.

But that doesn’t mean we’re going to throw knee-jerk/reactive changes based on any piece of feedback we receive. As we’ve said NUMEROUS times, we’re doing slow tweaks so that we don’t have to do whack-a-mole balance.

Just because things don’t happen “in a few days” doesn’t mean they’re not happening!

Hey. For now i like only play as a warrior because of his gameplay style. There’s so many ppl like me. And as you say, you ruined our main gameplay mechanics and the class itself for months only to see what’s happen. To get some statistics… Do you think thats normal?

Well, now you see clearly about warriors dead in pvp and need no more stats to prove. What about some temporary fixes? Like decreasing frenzy penalty to 25% or million possible decisions that are easy to deploy and cost nothing. Just playing with values. This is what i meant “in few days”. By the way, what about to do this things right now?

Your “methods” – to do things slooowly, get statistics blabla – totally bullkitten. Look at the most balanced cybersports games like Starcraft 2, League of Legends, etc etc… They have regular balance patches, hotfixes. Some test servers to experiment, “watch feedback” and to prevent stupid mistakes be on live ones. And your game with your unique super-ultra-methods-mark3 has no balance at all. Has some core features broken after your tweaks. No test servers. You said that you do some tests before apply. But you dont even know how pvp works. NO SIMPLY BUG FIXES. Only words and promises. Sometimes it seems like all of your class changes are pretty random and were maid in a day before its release date just to show ppl that you do something.

I love this game so much, I see its awesome pvp potential and it hurts very hard to know developers does not interested about that. Nothing personal to you, Jonh. I hope you prove me wrong.

Weapon tickets at end of stories.Fused/Frost

in Living World

Posted by: Geotherma.2395

Geotherma.2395

I’m not sure if this is solely a suggestion thread, but it does pertain just to living world. I’ll start by saying this isn’t my idea, this has been mentioned in several other threads. But I haven’t seen a thread dedicated to the idea. (Correct me if I missed one and this is a repeat.) I am adding on anything I believe would better the general idea.

I think the living story ends should allow players to receive one weapon ticket for trade to get a skin. Now it is called flame and frost, so I’m hoping there may be a frost style weapon to counter the fused ones. The ticket should be account bound, and 1 per account. So technically you would finish both/all the stories and receive one fused and one frost ticket. This would allow the weapon skins to remain somewhat rare as only one character could wield it. I believe the point of these skins being so rare is to allow them to not become an every day skin. Much like dungeon skins have become the norm for many players. Both tickets would still be available inside the BL chests for those who are lucky enough to get them that way. This idea allows for 2 possible ways of getting them, while keeping them rare.

After the one skin both fused and frost, players could then; if they wish, purchase keys to try and get more.

So hopefully this thread can be seen by devs and the people who wanted this idea can be heard. I understand the frustration some people have about the BL randomness of getting skins, but please keep in mind that is not the purpose of this discussion.

So how many people would like to see this idea implemented, and does anyone have anything to add to this?

Thank you for your time.

It's time to balance PvP apart from PvE/WvW

in PvP

Posted by: Ostricheggs.3742

Ostricheggs.3742

As Allie said, we want to be careful to balance their WvW/PvE potential against their PvP potential, and then inside of PvP, we have to be careful to watch how they perform at high ranks vs. low ranks.

This is a scary idea that I’ve heard bounced around quite a bit from the devs. To be perfectly blunt, it’s also a pretty stupid idea.

To say that PvP and PvE/WvW are different is a complete understatement. The goals, gearing and playerbase are so vastly different that to balance 8 classes around both sides of the mists is impossible. It cannot be repeated enough. BALANCING AROUND BOTH PVP AND PVE IS IMPOSSIBLE, WE WILL NEVER BE SATISFIED IF YOU CONTINUE THIS TREND!

Take for example, gearing. In WvW I can get a ridiculous 120% crit damage with full zerkers and two ascended rings. That’s not even the max you can get. That is quite literally double the amount of crit damage I’m able to get in the mists. In addition, with runes of altruism, I can maintain 20-25 stacks of might to get a ridiculous 3400 power, 120% crit damage and 65% crit. Are you kittening kidding me? How are you going to balance around THAT when I can only get 3k power and 30% crit damage and 50% crit in my glassiest build in the mists. It literally hits half as hard.

Those are hard numbers. It’s also only one of the very many differences that the devs seem oblivious of. The least of which is how completely rabid the playerbase of PvP is in comparison to the lackadaisical semi-casuals in PvE (not to seem insulting, I know that PvE has its hardcore players as well, there are just a relatively low proportion of them in comparison to PvP)

One of the largest differences lies in the fact that the needs of PvP balance are far different than the needs of PvE balance. In PvP, winning revolves around time. How quickly one person moves from one point to the next is, in my opinion, THE factor that makes eles overpowered in the current meta because no other class is able to fill that roll. Speed and time are huge factors that don’t exist as major balance issues in PvE, so how do you balance both? You also have to deal with the fact that this is an attrition based game with each individual player dealing with their own health pool and rarely with that of their team. You do not whittle down a boss mob like you do another set of 5 players. To balance around both ideas just boggles the mind.

Balance indifference’s will never bother a PvE’er as much as a PvP’er. A PvP player is always trying to win at the cost of another players loss. That’s the definition of PvP. When a PvPer loses to another player running what he considers imbalanced it is far more stress inducing than when a PvE’er notices that class Y does more damage and stays alive longer than him. It is continually rubbed in the face of the PvPer watching his team get destroyed by what he perceives as imbalance and therefore requires a more sensitive and frequent approach. While I’m not touting the much talked about whack-a-mole method, I’m pointing out that inaction in the field of balance will kitten off the PvPer much, MUCH more than the PvEer.

TL;DR The reason why people are so kitten off about balance in PvP, the reason why hoards of loyal players quit, who repeatedly say guild wars has one of the best combat systems in any mmo, and cite balance issues, the reason why you’ll never, ever, ever ever ever ever ever ever EVER have a thriving PvP game is because of your inane insistence that PvE and PvP MUST be the same.

The simple reality is that they are not the same.

We will leave this thread open, but will keep an eye on it. If it will get derailed or something like the earlier “incident” will take place, we will close it immediately.

We understand that leaderboards are very important to you, but please understand that we also want to make sure they work as intended, because I am very sure incorrectly working leaderboards would not make a highly competitive PvP base happy. We will let you know when they will be going live as soon as we feel comfortable to do so.

So please keep the discussion in this thread civil and on point.

Martin,

Thank you first and foremost for communicating this to us. Please understand that 99.9% of the “highly competitive” community would be content if you guys simply kept us in the loop more. In the last 6+ months, we as a community have been jerked around with empty promises of e-sport and it is very hard to continue to support this game when we know NOTHING about the direction it is headed.

You are the first (FIRST) dev to come on and give us something of a concrete answer on what the heck is going on with the leaderboards. Thank you again for your time and please encourage your higher ups to COMMUNICATE via a formal announcement regarding the delay of leaderboards SOON. Without such an announcement, how can you expect the player base NOT to ask questions?

Thanks again!

Is New AC dying?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Let’s beat this horse to death once more, with feeling.

Old AC was fine. Easy, nice introduction to dungeonning, Kohler was a fun fight for organized group, you could go in and out in less than half an hour for reasonable rewards, and it was altogether rookie and pug friendly.

New AC is a chore. Unorganized pug fail it massively, organized groups struggle with tedious/bugged boss mechanics, and it’s no longer rookie friendly as you need to expertly dodge, purge conditions, keep on your toes not to get repeated knocks backs from trash mobs.

Is it more challenging? Not really for someone who already finished multiple times the other dungeons in the game.

Is it more fun? I, for one, find it spectacularly tedious. Ghostbuster fight was fun for two minutes the first time. I don’t want to go through it ever again. Howling King (and the burrow event) lags horrendously on my system (it used to work as intended), so it’s not fun at all being mauled to death by invisible adds. Never tried Grast, but from what I’ve heard it’s the most bugged of the three flavours, so no thank you.

No wonder then no one want to run it anymore, except experienced players that have no way around farming tokens for legendary weapon crafting. HotW is now a better farm spot for PVT exotic armor.

Is Guild Wars 2 Doing Well?

A game without a subscription will never die. If players get bored they can take a break and come back whenever.

It is doing pretty well. I would guess the game has at least 1 million active players. Others come and go.

Based on info around the net it is probably the second or third most populated MMO on the market right now. Depending on how much Aion has dropped in the last year.

A developer should always be hiring and looking for new talent. The skills required to create a game like this aren’t very common. They are quickly snatched up by the many different companies.

Plus there are so many suckers spending a ton of money on the gem store, they have probably made more from that than actual game sales.

That’s right. Best update ever since the game was released. and there was no need to add any tier gear, or gear grind.

THIS is what I’m looking for in a good, creative, fun game. THIS will keep me logging in and playing…not gear grind. THIS kind of thing will entice me to keep buying GW2 related things…because it’s different, creative, intelligent, and fun. It’s not the same old same old with MMO’s.

Thank you ArenaNet for finally listening to many of us. I hope any further Ascended/tear gear is tabled in favor of more great content like this. Let us keep our Backpieces and accessories…but there is no need to add weapons or armor.

Keep this kind of thing going!

Game launched and its a beautiful fantasy world, possibly one of the best ive played.
But im starting to see it go down hill pretty fast.

I mean what exactly is Anets goal here? Is it not a fantasy game ?
It had some questionable concepts at first, then back packs and hoodies came out in the store…..really ? theres almost nothing worth buying as is, and 1 of the 3 armor sets looks like a reject from a bad kiss concert superhero convension..

But now theres the super box…..now im seeing people running around with digital monkeys and theres anoying digital effects and clouds……

So what is Anets goal here? some kind of hybrid game ? will I be able to buy a ford truck in the cash shop soon ? maybe a skate board ?

Am I the only one disapointed by this stuff? The game has the potential to be a fantastic fantasy world and instead its turning into some kind of mashup of american mmo game play and nonsensical japanese anime styling .

Can someone explain the point im missing ?

I can’t help but agree. This method of content updates just doesnt have the same substance as previous games. The very idea of something happening or changing in the world whether you’re there or not is not going to grow fond memories for any kind of casual audience or players who miss out on such events due to other real life responsabilities. Southsun cove is a good example, any new players joining the game around now will probably have no idea of the relevence behind the karka and will probably wonder why there is an empty level 80 zone in the middle of the sea.

This method also greatly reduces the amount of time people will be playing the game. Older games with expansions of new areas etc. still have those areas open to new people joining the game late. At this stage in GW2 there is just the personal story and the living story. With the living story constantly progressing and removing the old living story content to make way for new content, a new player will only ever have the personal story and the current living story available to them. Older players will have had the entire living story up until that point, with the experience and the memories of what happened in them. New players get shafted, feel hard done to and decide their time is better spent elsewhere. I know it sound ridiculous but in my experience, this is what happens over the course of the life of such MMORPG games.

It is a valid point; this strategy may actually be backfiring.

I know quite a few players who arn’t actively playing GW2 anymore because they are waiting for “more content”; this short term content tends to fly under the radar and when they finally DO return, they see no new content, shrug and go back to playing something else while they wait.

This strategy is novel; but it might not be working as intended

I can’t help but feel like it’s a strange idea to spend development time on temporary content.

If you look back at older MMOs like Everquest or World of Warcraft or City of Heroes(RIP), they contain a seemingly bottomless pit of content. Years and years of updates and expansions stacked on top of one another make for a wealth of content that newer MMO’s can only hope to obtain in time. Even if it ends up being largely unused as the players keep up with the ever advancing endgame, it allows newer players to see and explore the past. Kind of like how the Southsun Cove is now. It’s fallen into obscurity, but newer players who wern’t around for the event have the oppourtunity to discover the area and explore it.

There are still so many areas of this game that can be filled out. Why spend time on this when you can make more permanent additions to your game and use them as selling points? Just from past updates, I get the impression that the dev team is spread thin enough as it is without tacking on tasks that only have a temporary impact. Spend those resources elsewhere like patch QA, bugfixing, mini games, new zones, polishing the personal story, balancing skills and traits, etc. I think that would be appreciated more than what were getting with the living story now.

About the orders, I’m quite surprised that they didn’t do it like EoTN where you can do favors for each of them and in the process, participate in their story and learn more about them. Possibly also progress your character through an order of choice. Even the kurzick/luxon war in factions were more involved than the three orders in GW2 now.

The “Defeat pure evil and save the world” plot is about as simplistic and forgettable as plots can be. I’d be more interested in the conflicts the orders face amongst themselves and how their different ideologies clash.

Instead of just throwing the personal story away though, I hope they salvage it by making all three orders recognize our hero after we defeat zhaitan, and let the three orders continue to drive the story onward. It even fits the current living story. The order of whispers should likely have both the dredge and the flame legion infiltrated by now and can provide a lot of intel as the vigil continue to escort and take care of refugees. The priory should have started working on a solution to the problem as well.

If players could take part in that capacity, it will allow continuity for all future stories, no matter what kind of story they add. Even if it’s a complete new plot where the main antagonists and everything is entirely done from scratch, players will still not find it confusing because by then, they’ll likely have picked a favorite order and has already familiarized themselves with their usual channels. The stories can be delivered more coherently, without unnecessary not-quite-a-quest-dispenser heralds that nobody cares to click.

Let’s also at least try to create some justification for why Orr is still swarming with undead after it’s supposedly purified. Maybe the process just takes very long, but at least people who have completed the story should be able to visit that sanctum in a separate instance, it could be a hub for people who have completed the story to meet and possible have some ongoing story stuff there.

Sick of RNG, Nothing rewards skill, Long Post

FearMeOrBeerMe.6587

Just my rant. Deal with it. It’s been said before. Other people saying it doesn’t make me feel better like this does.

If i get a DEV reply just answer this. Why does skill offer no reward? But time and repetition do.

Nothing in this game rewards skill. You can gear up in exo’s in a couple days that look terrible but have the stats of the most expensive sets so sure theirs no REAL gear grind… whatever…. So let’s talk about the thing’s that are expensive. Acquiring them is based on RNG. Named exotic, RNG, pre-cursor, RNG, Fused weapon, (extra terrible RNG), what else… endless anythings…. fractal skins… yea anything of value represents RNG. I don’t even look at legendary’s and respect the player because their three possibilities that player could represent. Someone who got lucky (no relation to skill) and got an early pre-cursor, someone who sat in CoF for hours because theirs only two methods of efficient farm (that dont require the use of a certain ‘middle of the night program’ or botting) those being TP manipulation (with current market require a lot of gold already or just good RNG) and CoF farm. Or someone who played for a long time being very stingy. None of those are fun.

Named exotics, want em. RNG. Or run magic find in dungeons and be a leech to all those around you who have real skill and are min maxing. Fix magic find, was implemented in a terrible way. Or at least give us an inspect function. If i see magic find gear in frac 30+ (or hell 20 +) they need to get booted. Even having them link gear is pointless. 90% of people have multiple sets.

Pre-cursor, RNG the mystic forge AFTER grinding or abusing the system (event farming which was nerfed and CoF)

Fractal Skin, RNG. 500+ fractals complete 1 character, I’d say close to 100 on the other. No skins. People have had WAY worse. But I see people get skins all the time. RNG. No rewarding skill. Skins should be token based anyways. In fact. Why the hell do you get a random one and not a token to turn in to get a choice item. Warrior gets fractal dagger. RNG the skin, RNG the type. No skill involved. Want double daggers. Have fun with RNG.

Fused Weapon. RNG. Wanna increase your chances. Be exploitive. Do key runs. (this is done by creating a human warrior and taking commoners path) get lvl 10 story done get your key and delete character. Rinse repeat. Can be done in sub 20 minutes.Or Farm CoF to trade for keys. Since mindless farming that excludes most classes is fun (thank god i have a warrior, sorry rangers)

Fixes:
Give inspect function

Pre-Cursor at 5k a net points would be fair. Or Break the pre-cursor itself into several pieces that have definitive non RNG methods to acquire. Charged lodes are ridiculous btw. Want em, farm those specifically. Or farm CoF for hour and hours.

Fractal skins no longer skins, make them tokens for skins
Fractal skin token @ first fractal 50 completion or 500 completed. Better Yet. Token when the following completed: 100 complete 20+, 100 30+ , 100 40+

Non-rng method for fused. We get it, you need to make money. Then tell us drop rates and give non-rng method to acquire requiring skill. Not just time and luck. Say. Complete so many specific dungeon paths in a set time limit. That would be fun (since they are all so simple speed runs would be more entertaining for those bored @ end game with no content to do), or instead of that( or to allow for different play style ) complete X many specific dungeon paths without being downed/dying
———You failed entirely when dev posted something like “we dont want the gem store to posses items that cannot be acquired using other methods” sure you can get black lion keys without buying them…. but look at the COPPER price of chests… and compare that to the drop rate of keys….gotta either gold exchange (gem prices SKY-ROCKETED and un-realistic for non end game players), pump money in (good marketing, it worked… but the whole dont want the gem store to have items etc… contradicts)
K i’m done, haven’t proof read just ranting
I’ll prob be leaving this dying game for ESO and hope for the best their unless theirs some SERIOUS additions and fixes to allow for skill.
