It’s still a terrible and useless utility skill. Utility skills are so important for engi’s, they rely on heavy dmg kits, on life saving elixirs and then u got this crappy skill (that is almost not to be taken seriously) which makes you jump forward, without breaking stuns and crappy damage, it was a joke, and it still is.

stuns, no, but all other movement impairing effects? yes.

blast finisher? check.

damage? check.

gap creator/closer? check.

i find your lack of faith in the booties disturbing.

Maybe then they will learn that video games are meant for fun.

It’s ironic to read this, and go to the other topic about a guy who loves to grind and farm complaining that he doesn’t like Liadri… Video games are meant to be fun, not meant to be a grind or a farm. Rewarding time spent is bad, rewarding skill is good. I think some players are angry with this boss because they got used to having everything in the game through mindless grind, but have now hit a wall when faced with content that requires skill.

I think you missed the stream, in which they tried some bosses and previewed the event for the player base, and making difficult content obviously doesn´t mean they can do it, because the player are investing tons of time in playing the content, the Dev´s have other things to do. And they said they had 50 alpha tester for this event which tried liadri only 4 of them made it. If you know the ropes Liadri is doable with any Class, there are some videos on youtube where some players do some of the bosses gambits on/off which were twitterd by the official gw2 page to help some players out. Change up your Trait-Build, your gear and weapons if Liadris achievement is to hard, it´s an try and error boss after all.

i think the “only 4 made it” thing was referring to trying her with gambits or something, not “just” being able to defeat her.

I sincerely doubt it. Even without gambits she is a pain thanks to the challenge only requiring 3 things: DPS, vitality and condition removal. Also the reason why I want devs to try their content is in order to see their mistakes like the dumb camera and many other issues. As for me not liking to fight her, it’s not quite so. I didn’t hate the fight itself, but rather the inconveniences like the camera, not very visible circles, high hp boss, long walk if you run out of time or if you don’t get ressed, laggy thanks to the arena being in a huge zerg farming area and so on. The idea of content is to have fun and I sincerely doubt those factors made liandri fun at all.

dps and vitality?

funny, i went with DoT and vigor maintenance instead, with a low CD heal, and it worked. maybe the problem is that you’re spending more time complaining about liadri and less time trying to figure out why you can’t?

oh and as for the “only 4 made it”, i looked up, only 5 testers did her WITH 5 GAMBITS ON.

Some pretty interesting ideas here. I was actually spit-balling some ideas on how to address this today. This has always been something that has bothered me, too.

For example:

  • Have kits respect the existing back item flag. If you have a back item and you want to show it, hide the kit. If you don’t have a back item or choose to hide it, always show the kit. Obviously this makes it a little harder than usual to tell what kit you are using, so:
    • A nameplate icon similar to Elemental Attunements would be a good addition (I may add this regardless if we can get the art )
    • Move the kit somewhere else on your body. I know, crazy right? For example, who doesn’t like a sweet fanny-pack?

Hopefully this finally gets resolved soon, and I’ll do what I can to see that happen. Keep in mind, as Colin mentioned before, that there are some pretty beefy projects going on that are consuming our engineering time. But that doesn’t exactly mean we can’t sneak stuff in here and there .

I’ll make this quick. I posted something similar to this thread months ago but I feel like now might be a better time for this to get noticed because of ANET’s great success in the plush backpacks.

Situation (Optional Read): So I’m walking down Lion’s Arch and the sylvari ladies are swooning (and some of the men). A little flex of that 3 inch circumference bicep and they go wild. That Nightmare Court Set shows how much of a bad-boy my sylvari is. I’m feeling a little kitteny so I decide to put on a little fire show for my amazed spectators so I slot my grenade kit. However, to my dismay, the hobo sack instantly drains all of my charisma. My 3 inch bicep reduces to a 1 inch instantly. My nightmare court gear instantly withers away to dust. The show was over before it even began. The once entranced sylvari ladies now walk over to the suave elementalist who displays a fire show so great, it nearly made a steam vegetable mix out of the audience. I log out, uninstall, drive over to ANET HQ, and dump 10 lbs of freshly steamed garden salad in front of their doors.
—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-
Story Time over

-This game is based on cosmetics. Endgame is based on cosmetics. Dungeon armor serves only to provide cosmetics. People spend hours and hours on cosmetics.
-Engineers must wear hobo sacks and stow their weapons during parts of fights. Almost all engineers have at least 1 hobo sack in his/her utility slots.

- Hobo sacks are ugly. They cover the beautiful plush backpack items. My hobo sack doesn’t match my bad-boy Nightmare Court wardrobe.

Solution: 1. Allow cosmetic upgrades to hobo sacks available in the gem store (Maybe I can turn my cute quaggan backpack into a grenade bag?). 2. Allow us to use kits without having hobo sacks. 3. Let us display our stowed weapons while using grenades or a flamethrower, etc.
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
Simplest and most efficient fix: Give us a toggle to hide or show hobo-sacks when we have a kit equipped. It’s probably an easy update, it is optional (so those who want to keep the hobo look can), and it will probably help sales for the new quaggan and charr backpacks.

Thanks.

I’m fine with this. Pies were a crutch that let people build full glass while staying durable, and they diminished the value of skillful play. There are plenty of other great defensive food options out there, but now if you want to play a glass cannon, you’re going to actually be squishy. This is the way it should be, and we might even see some more build diversity now that building for survival is more important. Definitely a good move on Anet’s part.

Like I said, there’s a courtesy involved. They changed the mechanic of how you can obtain bank and bag slots. If I had known that this change was going to be happening, such as mentioning this change when they talk about upcoming patches, I would have had the foresight to wait until those ‘items’ would go on sale, as they always seem to eventually do.

Otherwise, it’s just nice to see that a sale is upcoming and not immediately upon us. That has been a fairly common occurrence in most games and in stores. In this instance, I would’ve been one who would have been able to save some money. It’s not going to catch everyone, but it gives a little bit larger of a window to have more people catch the sale.

you seem to be missing the point. what about those people who buy something just before the sale is announced?

WoW has nothing to do with it. This has been a mechanic in countless games before it.

The type of armor a class has is offset by the tools available to the class and what kind of combat that class is expected to do. Countless variables at play.

You bring up the necro example, and what does that class have to offset no heavy armor? they get a second health bar and more health than warriors. They also get toughness options.

What do Thieves have to offset no heavy armor? Stealth.

What do Elementalists have to offset no heavy armor? Exteme mobility and every skill option being defensive in nature with fairly large gap openners.

I hope you realize you just explained why your first argument is invalid. Classes with less armor are given tools to make up for it, which means heavy vs light armor is irrelevant to a discussion about the risk vs reward of using ranged weapons vs melee. Especially since, again, access to melee or ranged weapons isn’t limited by armor type.

You’re talking about nerfs to ranged damage, but this is already how the game works. Ranged weapons almost universally deal less damage than melee weapons because melee weapons require the user to put themselves at more risk. It doesn’t matter if the person is a Ranger, Necro, or Warrior.

I’ve spent alot of time and energy on my 3 main toons. Don’t make me mad by weakening them.

I can live with the so called weaker classes being made better, but don’t dumb me down to them.

Heck, if you make the weaker better, I may make one of them my toon as well, and be happy about it.

I don’t get this logic. If everyone is on the same level everything should be fine, right? It doesn’t matter if that means that bad professions get better or “good” professions get dumbed down. If every profession is on one level it would be the best.

When the drinks arrive, each one has a fly in it.
The Asura looks disgusted and pushes his drink to the side,
The Human flicks the fly out and downs the drink,
The Norn grabs the fly by the wings and yells at it “Spit it out ya kitten, spit it out!”

WoW thats a long post Tiger. My sincere condolences and I really hope Support can/will help you.

SHORT VERSION
I’m the player that requested my guild leader to make some new ranks, so I feel really bad about this. The Idea was to theme the ranks, new member (Mortal), Standard Member (Ascended), Officers (themed ranks) and Leader (godess)

WHAT HAPPEND
Tiger Ashante.1792 the Guild founder/leader of Guardians Of Divinity [GOD] created a new rank and placed herself into the new rank without realising she had to add all permissions. By default a guild member, DancinWookie.5246, whome has not played for months is the new leader and can’t be contacted to re-enstate Tiger Ashante.1792 role as guild leader. Basically making the guild HEADLESS and if it can’t be rectified will render the guild permanently disfunctional.

FIX Request to ANET support
1. Ingame GM tool (if such a tool exists) re-enstate the guild leader; or
2. Email DancinWookie.5246 on our behalf and ask him to log in if at all possible; or
3. Request a DEV to look into fixing the issue. ( change a value in the file data base for the Guild : Guardians Of Divinity giving Tiger Anshante.1792 All Permissions.

Patch Request for Guilds UI
1. Guild Founder can-not be Kicked or Demoted by other guild leaders
2. Guild Founder/leader can not be Demote them self without Warning: “Are you sure” cheak box.
3. Default Leadership goes to Most active/Highest ranked Member
4. In game members roster “last active timer” so you can see how long ago some one in the guild last logged in.

I’m reading through these “concerns” guys and I don’t know, I just can’t agree. After a decade of MMO’s I’m a little burned out on these kinds of complaints. If you don’t like goalposts, why are you gaming? I feel as though many wish their game was like a dvd, where you can boot up, pick your scene, and start playing with nothing to strive for or achieve.

I feel Anet handed you an unprecedented toolbox to achieve your goals in game, with the ability to join multiple guilds, shared xp, shared loot, guesting, gems, and more. And really, if your running a guild and have had an unlock staring you in the face for 6 months and you ignored it because you didn’t think you would ever want it, I guess you made a bad call?

As for the concern they are making you do something you don’t want to do, games are loaded with those. I did not particularly want to run through the rabbits to get my xp, but I did because I set myself the goal of max level, and I knew I would have to do things I would not always want to do. On reflection, running though the bunnies was a fun kind of pain in the a@#. Do some wvw, get your but kicked, explore a little and have some fun kitten

Tough issues

Posted by: Blood Red Arachnid.2493

Blood Red Arachnid.2493

Keeping in mind #3, pure damage will eventually have a diminishing return. If you can kill an enemy 3 times as quickly, it isn’t nearly as much of a jump in survivability than killing them twice as quickly. What also must be considered is that stats always work in groups of 3, and never alone. You can achieve an overall greater survivability, in theory, though the correct combination of stats. This does have one issue, though: any survivability above necessity is inefficient, since killing an enemy quicker does far more than contribute to survivability. It also contributes to income and free time. But, only if you are a skilled enough player, since failure at a task is time consuming and income consuming.

It is also here that this analysis falls apart in PvP and WvW. In PVP, pretty much everyone you encounter has high sustained damage that is nearly unavoidable, and so the point of maximizing survivability through damage and other traits becomes a necessity, and not something that less skilled players do to survive.

As for a way to make toughness and vitality more efficient… I have not come up with a solution yet. This is mostly because I don’t think this analysis is fully complete yet, and I’m afraid that I would break the system further with anything I suggest. But, unless I am missing my guess, toughness and vitality are overall fools errands to invest in anything but the minimum required to survive certain encounters.

I suppose that ends the bulk of this analysis on toughness. For reference, I will list a few extra formula for anyone who wants to pursue this further.

Factoring in critical hits:

1 x (chance of not hitting crit) + (1 + 0.5 + crit damage) x (chance of hitting crit) = total crititcal multiplier of damage.

So, for example, berserker armor, weapon, and jewels (not factoring backpack) give 58% crit damage and 667 precision (36% crit chance), so…

1 × .64 + 2.08 × .36 = 1.39

Or a 139% damage multiplier to power. So if power does double damage, that’ll be 2 × 1.39 = 2.78 total increase in damage. Things become more complicated when factoring in the presence of fury or other things that increase crit rate.

Condition Damage:
Bleeds do double damage 850 condition damage.
Poison does double damage at 840 condition damage.
Burns do double damage at 1312 condition damage.
Confusion does double damage at 867 condition damage.

Factoring damage increases by percentage: Things such as 5% bonus to damage when endurance isn’t full, 10% increase to rifle damage, 5% damage while under the effect of might, etc. For now, I assume a geometic relationship, multiplying the damage ratio from power by 1.05 then 1.05 then 1.10 and so on. An arithmatic relationship would be to just add them together (1.05 + 1.05 + 1.1) and multiply them afterwards. I’ll need clarification on this.

I don’t have opinions. I only have facts I can’t adequately prove.

Tough issues

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Blood Red Arachnid.2493

Blood Red Arachnid.2493

But what of vitality? Well, that works on a similar principle. If we were to say that the 920 toughness were 920 vitality instead, then this would add 9200 HP to the character. Going off of the different base HP of each class:

Warrior, Necromancer: 18,372
Engineer, Ranger, Mesmer: 15,082
Guardian, Thief, Elementalist: 10,805

And using this forumla:

1 – Base HP / New HP

We would get the following:

Highest base: 1 – 0.666 = 33.3%
Medium Base: 1 – 0.621 = 37.9%
Lowest base: 1 – .540 = 46.0%

So on a short term basis, vitality investment is either more effective than toughness or a lot more effective than toughness. For the lowest base HP, vitality is almost as good as investing in power. Vitality comes with the advantage that it can mitigate condition damage better, but heals remain steady in their effectiveness, although they heal less as a percentage of health. It is for this reason that vitality is often called ablative, for once the extra HP is worn away the effectiveness is gone. This, again, isn’t a problem for damage, though, since an enemy that is alive for half as long will inflict half as many conditions.

A final advantage to high damage builds is that they also reduce the damage for teammates as well. Killing an enemy twice as fast means that teammates also take half as much damage. Because of this, high damage is ultimately a cooperative form of defense, which is something neither toughness nor vitality can claim (unless you count standing around and taking hits while rezzing someone as cooperative).

This is all well and good, but you’re probably thinking that in practice it isn’t as simple as “if the enemy lives half as long, it’ll only do half the damage”. And this is correct to a certain degree: stats do not exist in a vacuum by themselves, and enemies have bursts of damage and may live for very long amounts of time despite being dealt more damage. However, it is by the game’s very design that the tools for mitigating the various problematic portions of a pure damage build are built into nearly each and every class. Taking a look at the various problems:

1) Burst damage from enemies. A lot of vets and champions may have an attack or two that is capable of bowling over a pure damage build in one hit, and toughness/vitality letting you survive that hit would be crucial. However, this is what dodging was made for: when that OHKO attack starts coming your way, you get out of the way. With copious blocking skills and reflecting skills and dodging skills with control effects, immobilizes, blinds, and vigor, the only barrier to a pure damage build surviving an encounter is how well they can read enemy patterns. Because of this, toughness and vitality become like a safety net until players get good enough that they no longer need them.

2) Conditions. Enemies can apply conditions in one of two ways: either steadily or in bursts. Steadily applied conditions benefit greatly from an enemy dying sooner, since they act like regular damage output. Burst conditions follow the same dodging mechanics as in #1, but with the added bonus that condition curing abilities can get rid of the problem before it escalates into something severe.

It is because of #1 and #2 that, eventually, players will upgrade to pure damage builds as they learn enough about the game. In the long run they survive better while accomplishing tasks faster. There is one unavoidable caveat, though:

3) High sustained damage and thresholds. There exists many enemies in the game that are incredibly durable while having high non-burst damage. They are rare, but nonetheless they are encountered on occasion. Often they are champions that seem to only have a ranged auto attack. It is here that a pure damage build suffers, since there needs to be a certain survivability threshold that they need to achieve. This threshold, of course, is how much damage the enemy does (considering all mitigation techniques like dodging and control) compared to how much the player can heal in the timeframe between healing. It is here that toughness shines, since vitality lasts but for a moment. High damage builds often have to contemplate where this threshold is when building traits, since it will allow them to beat those elusive but very difficult bosses, or they have to develop specific tactics to get around those bosses.

I don’t have opinions. I only have facts I can’t adequately prove.
