Hey all. This is Tallman (Briggs). This guide is intended to cover the basics of the Engineer for people trying to break into the sPvP setting. I plan on covering the pros and cons of the Engineer’s weapons, traits, and utilities, as well as share some general tips and tricks.
This guide is a work in progress, so please treat it as such! Let me know if you find any errors or have any suggestions!

Weapon Choices
The Engineer profession only has access to 3 types of weapons (outside of Weapon Kits, which we will discuss in the skills section) – Rifles, Pistols, and Shields. In the following section, I’ll detail their strengths and weaknesses.
The format is as follows:
Weapon
Brief Synopsis.
1. Number One Ability (Cooldown, In Seconds) – Skill Description. Skill Analysis/Opinions.
Rifle
The Rifle is the Engineer’s only weapon that scales well with power, and is phenomenal for kiting, control, mobility, and burst damage. It is a versatile weapon that takes awhile to get used to, but rewards mastery of its skillset.
1. Hip Shot – Deliver a quick rifle shot from the hip that pierces targets.
This is your bread and butter auto attack ability. It deals decent damage, has decent range, and has a decent attack speed. Don’t forget that it pierces targets! Your positioning is paramount to maximize your DPS in PvP teamfights.
2. Net Shot (10) – Immobilize foes with a net shot.
Net Shot is a great control skill that can be used in many ways. For example, immobilizing a foe off a point can secure a capture or a neutralize, immobilizing a foe in an AoE can ensure more damage, immobilizing a foe and running away is a great tactic for kiting, etc. However, Net Shot’s projectile is slow, and can easily be dodged at max range by strafing (not even a real dodge!). If the target is far enough away, you can manually aim by holding down your right mouse button and firing net shot in that direction instead to hit strafing targets.
3. Blunderbuss (10)- Fire a cloud of shrapnel that causes more damage the closer you are to foes.
Blunderbuss does a massive amount of damage in melee range, and rewards aggressive plays. That’s essentially all there is to it.
4. Overcharged Shot (15)- Fire a blast so strong it launches your foe as you fall backward and cures immobilized, crippled, and chilled.
Overcharged Shot is great for knocking people off of points, kiting, and even a bit of burst damage. Use it to get out of Throw Bolas, Entangle, or Devourer’s Venom to ruin enemy’s burst, or use it to interrupt enemy heals! You can interrupt your own personal knockback with a stunbreaker, as well, so use this ability to your advantage.
5. Jump Shot (20) – Blast the ground, damaging nearby foes and leaping to your target.
Jump Shot is a very versatile move that deals massive damage and applies vulnerability to enemies it hits. You can use it to move between points (Say, from the point on Clocktower to the windowsills or the upper levels of the Keep), kite (jump away from people), combos (it’s a leap finisher!) or burst damage. Landing on people does a huge amount of damage, especially when followed up by a Blunderbuss!
Main Hand Pistol
The MH Pistol is a medium-range condition weapon that applies three of the four damaging conditions in the game. While it is relatively straightforward, it’s very effective!
1. Explosive Shot – Fire a shot that explodes on impact, bleeding nearby foes.
Plain and simple. Stack those bleeds! Keep in mind that this is a minor AoE, so keeping enemies clumped up is a plus to increase your damage. This doesn’t bleed in an AoE mind you – it only bleeds your target.
2. Poison Dart Volley (10) – Fire a volley of darts that poison foes.
Once again, relatively straight forward. This fires a series of poison darts which stack poison on the target. Try to use this when your target hits around 60-50% health (depending on the target, maybe wait even longer) in order to help negate their healing ability. Since it’s a volley effect, targets can dodge and negate most of your poison duration, so watch out!
3. Static Shot (15) – Discharge a lightning shot that bounces between multiple foes, blinding and confusing them.
An AoE blind and 2 stacks of confusion on one ability is great. This is a great opener to some combo classes (warriors, thieves) to mess up their combo. Make a warrior miss that bullrush so he can’t knock you down for the hundred blades with this move! For damage, use this on cooldown. Otherwise, save the blinds to negate critical disables.

Thanks, we will try and monitor this. Once again a reminder that fixes take time to make and test.

REALLY? REALLY? Seriously, I thank people when they pull monsters for me. Farming is a lot faster if you don’t have to pull them yourself.
You should too, that’s etiquette.
This will depend on your char and how good you are in handling multiple mobs at once. Not all people are able to stand strong in a train and will surely die. I’m thinking about elementalist or ranger (have only experience with those 2). They play great, but when rushed by a large train, its very hard to survive this on your own. So be carefull with this.

For those that don’t know what “training” is. I will define. Training is when you cause aggro to be established upon yourself and you lead a line of these mobs into someone else. Thus leaving them to with these mobs on them, which can cause their character to get killed.

Hey Krosslite,
it’s a bad experience and as you tell it, it got worse. People sometimes train mobs to another player by accident. I mean, when you get a bigger chunk then you can chew, you run, right? And then you sometimes get a train that follows you, so if you pass another player (again, not deliberate) you can be call for that. But in that case its an unfortunalle experience.
On the ohter hand, the story you tell, where the whole guild, including the leaders, come and train you and let you die, that’s just NOT DONE!! No other explanation or hiding behind “peer presure”, you just don’t do that to another person.
So indeed, go report them, try to avoid those kind off people and keep following that golden rule! I know i do the same and i count my blessings that i (so far) never had an planned train on me.

I think someone has tried this with me when I’m on my guardian. I’ll be fighting a veteran or something and a couple guys will come by trailing mobs and run right past me. This usually doesn’t cause me any problems because of the way I’ve built my character but I’ve seen it happen. Never thought people were attempting to grief me. But now I know and shall keep an eye out for it. It’s a sad truth that people will inevitably find some way to harass their fellows, even in a system as friendly as GW2.
Report them. It’s probably the only thing you can do. I’m guessing this isn’t the only time they’ve done something like this…and hopefully with enough reports ArenaNet will do something to enforce their rules.
Wow, this is extreme. You remember the name of the guild by any chance? Not that I’m going to call them out or start a trollfight, but I’m sure as hell going to avoid them.
Time to time it is needed to run a refresher thread about etiquette within a game. I know this has been posted before by other in other forms, but it is once again time to refresh ourselves with this.
The most important word that anyone can use for this is respect.
Treat others as you would like to be treated in other words. Last night I had an encounter on my sever which will remain unmentioned. A few days ago two separate members of a guild on my sever purposely trained some mobs onto me.
For those that don’t know what “training” is. I will define. Training is when you cause aggro to be established upon yourself and you lead a line of these mobs into someone else. Thus leaving them to with these mobs on them, which can cause their character to get killed.
To continue; I found out the who the guild leaders of this guild that did this to me and proceeded to whisper to them on what had happened. As a result of this contact I was first called a liar. Then a short time later contacted by one of the regular members of the guild who proceeded to cruse me out in chat.
Within the next hour I suddenly found myself surround by several members of this guild including their leaders who proceeded to bring in a large number of mobs on me and eventually got me killed.
They then rezed me to a point of just below actually fully rezing me. This happened in the two times they succeeded in getting me killed. Act as if they were trying to make up their earlier poor treatment of me. They continued to follow me around for about an hour.
This is called grieving.
This is not how people should treat each other. Be it in a game or in RL. This can also be called bullying. Something that has become something that more and more people are become aware is wrong.
My name reflects my believes. I follow the golden rule. I know not all do the same.
I have been in MMOs a long time. I had thought I had seen it all. Apparently I was wrong. I had never encountered an entire guild of grievers to the point that the leadership itself was involved. Now I have.
My best suggestion I can make to those that do follow the golden rule; is do not hesitate to report someone for this type of behavior. It is wrong and needs to be removed. If you can’t do it in RL you shouldn’t do it here either.
But then your threat will be replaced by those complaining they can’t make any money because mats are so cheap on the TP.
Well I was one of those people who went around reporting bots left and right and complaining about how they were ruining the game…
Turns out I was wrong, the lack of bots is what will be the ruin of the game. Prices for even the most basic materials have gone up 500-1000% since the bots vanished. I can’t afford to craft, I can’t afford to buy armor, I can’t afford to do pretty much anything since the bots were banned.
I hate to be saying this, but the game was better off when the bots made everything more affordable, I was having a lot more fun with the bots bringing in a steady supply of stuff, please bring them back.
If you are an Elementalist or an Engineer, it is intentional.
Hm. If Jeff can’t find it, that says it’s a highly specific problem. More info would help.
-What class are the problem characters?
-What level were you when the problem first happened?
-Do you remember what order did you do things / talked to people?
-Anything else that might be relevant?
As I posted above, after multiple playthroughs, I haven’t been able to reproduce the bug.
I am now level 80 and still no luck. This bug persists and is preventing me from doing anything with my story.
A bit of additional information:
When Steelbane comes down and promptly refuses to turn red, my quest log says I still need to tell him about the destroyed supplies, which of course is what you do when you begin this phase of the quest before the fights. So maybe it’s an issue with scripting? Maybe the quest log just isn’t updating properly. I dunno.
I’m having the same issues. Looking at MissBehaving’s screenshots and the descriptions tell me we’re all stuck in the exact same scenario. The dialogue scene (that I guess is supposed to happen), just won’t start, and I can’t make Steelbane fight no matter what I try. He stubbornly remains green. I’ve tried talking to everyone in that arena, repeatedly talked to Steelbane. I try targeting him with my attack skills, and stand next to him doing AoE skills, and nothing. I’ve even tried picking up boulders and metal bars from the arena, but I can’t force the scene in any way.
I know that I have hardware issues. My graphics card isn’t completely up to spec, but it’s never completely blocked progress before. All it usually does is cause lag (which gets me killed, true), but if that’s what’s behind this issue, it’s a first.
Additional info, in case it helps you recreate the issue: Playing from Europe, on Vabbi, with PC.
Same problem. Ive defeated who i need to. I get the cutscene of everyone running in. Rytlock and Steelbane are standing with a group of Charr, including that annoying one whose name begins with C that I cant remember. There is no current objective, and i have ticks against what needed to be done. Speaking to Rytlock get you a dialog box, with only one answer, being, “Ill report back later” or something to that effect. Speaking to steelbane gets you standard ‘filler’ answers.
Ive done this 3 times, in an hour so far this morning, and each time Ive gotten the same result. Ive relogged, rebooted. Done other stuff, obtained a level, and still no joy. Im currently level 9. Eradon Terrace. Im a Guardian.
Guess I’ll continue to level, and when I’m level 80, I’ll work on my story
Cheers
Ok, here’s what Ive got. I’m now level 49. I went back to this just now, and surprise, surprise, I completed it without an issue. I cant quite recall first times around, but this time I skipped the to the end of the first dialog. Did the fights, and cutscene fired up on command.
Onward, Charr.

I still have the problem as well. It doesn’t show the following cut scene after you beat the Giant Devourer. All i can do is run around and even if you talk to Rytock or Steelbane nothing happens.
I have the same problem.
I see Rytlock and Steelbane they are in a group of 5. There is no current objective.
I just completed it with no issues. I’ll keep looking, but if I can’t reproduce the issue, I can’t give an ETA for an update.
EDIT: I’m now 0/3 trying to get this bug to happen, so I’m at a dead end. What’s your current objective (if any)? Do you see Rytlock and/or Steelbane? Where are they?

Still not fixed. I reported this bug a few weeks ago when my charr was level 4. He’s now level 71, and is still unable to continue with his personal story. This is starting to get annoying.
True still not fixed
Also having this problem. Charr necromancer, level 4.
i am also having the same problem and im thinking its not just at random because ive restarted many times and get the same problem each time…..wish it would get fixed i would love to keep playing as a charr….
I’m still having the same issue and I don’t have a Mac to try it on. Seems like this has been reported for almost a month now. Maybe we could get a fix? Plzzzzz?
Have the same problem on PC. So sick of it that I tried continuing on Mac and it works.
it still happening to me too, please fix it
I had this issue…then I deleted the character, I wanted to keep going but apparently this isn’t going to be fixed any time soon
