They’re hardly making a big deal of it. We’re talking about one NPC standing in Lion’s Arch who, if you choose to speak to her, will tell you about one of her recent personal life choices.
It’s hardly Anet making a political statement, any more than the asura in Rata Sum who talks about having a trial separation from her partner is making a grand political statement on divorce.
Obviously there will be some cross-over between real life people, events and opinions and those in-game because even when creating a fantasy world you have to start from what you know. But in this case I don’t think it has anything to do with real life politics, whether it’s a current ‘hot topic’ in your country (or anyone else’s) or not.

This is fantastic, now can we have major characters who are trans? Or even Sya here could become more important?
Also, quick question @ the devs: who is the voice actress for Sya?
i don’t really get it… nothing against the lgbt community, have several friends who are, and legally i think they should have more rights, but why the need to put hot topic issues in a fantasy video game? In a game about unity and fighting dragons just seems like a good way to stirr up controversy and have more religion debates in trade chat and can see otherwise good people who just happen to have a religious belief getting banned just for having a discussion (even if in a polite/friendly manner)
why not put obama or hillary flyers up, or crosses or other religious symbols ingame too? Thought the whole point of a fantasy video game was to escape reality.
bunny trail but… why do voters even care about social issues atm when we are billions or trillions in debt atm in the usa. everything else seems kind of irrelevant in comparison to the giant problem that isn’t going away.
again (just to make it clear and i dont get banned for even posting this lol) i support the agenda, but I don’t get the need for it in a game. let the politicians and preachers fight in real life, ingame i just want to fight dragons and talk in trade chat without debates.
The inclusion of this NPC has zero to do with any “hot topic issue,” unless you believe it is up to you to debate whether transgender people do or don’t exist. And let me tell you, bud, that ain’t up to you! We exist regardless of your opinions on the matter!
Regardless, this NPC has nothing at all to do with any discussion of people’s real world legal rights or other real world issues. It is simply a fact of life that gender variant and gender non-normative people are a part of the real world (and they are not at all a modern or Anglo-European invention either, btw). It should be zero skin off of your nose that an aspect of human diversity be acknowledged as part of a game world. And if you feel that it is some skin off your nose then I think you have to face the fact that that’s nothing but ignorance and prejudice.
I think this is great, and I commend anet for including a trans character in game. Also, for having our character, AND the lionsguard they talk to be so cool with it.

In my experience, anything that starts with “nothing against the lgbt community” is probably going to be against the lgbt community, just like anything that starts “nothing against black people” is probably going be racist.
I always hope to be pleasantly surprised, but I wasn’t this time, and I doubt I will be the next time either. :’)
It’s more about being inclusive, and showing support in a subtle way. Anet isn’t pushing it down our throats. They have an NPC with dialogue that indicates that she used to be known as a he. If a player doesn’t like it due to whatever religion they follow in real life, it can be simply ignored. Just like how I don’t like Fractals anymore, so I no longer do them.
Now if a player(s) chooses to focus on this NPC, that’s up to them. Knowing that this character exists doesn’t change the overall MMO experience of killing dragons. Yet a small addition like Sya to the lore of Tyria can mean the world to a player who can relate to her identity/lifestyle.
Thank you, ANet. I can’t tell you how much this means to me and to my guild.
I love this.
Especially since the total makeover kit has been in the game for ages, it’s really nice to see the same option available to NPCs and therefore working it into the lore.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
This was such a lovely addition. Thank you, Anet.
And thank you for having interactions with her, both from other NPCs and our player character, show 100% unambiguous support of her.
A+ job, truly wonderful! <3

Anet pulled through, and introduced a transgender NPC into the game! A big Thank You to Colin for showing love to my LGBT friends.
Aid Worker Sya, formerly know as Symon. Tyria took one step closer to equality for all!
I actually feel like they’ve done a good job of making it look new whilst retaining the essence of the original. It’s still got the roofs shaped like ships hulls, the sails and nets and other nautical themes dotted around and some of the haphazard design of the original.
I agree there’s more concrete in the new version but even that I’m ok with. It actually reminds me of various European seaside towns.
If you’ve only checked out the area around Trader’s Forum and the Grand Piazza then I can see where you’re coming from, but if you venture into the Commodore’s Quarter, the streets along the waterfront around the docks, or Western Ward I think you’ll see a lot of the old LA is still there. And of course Farshore Ward and the other outlying areas are relatively unchanged.

no
15 characters
oh ok thank you! that’s a lot of characters you have wow
You have to have something to keep you warm, since the T3 alone isn’t going to do that.
Female Character, Librarian glasses, Scarf, check check check. How to thief
Forgot the blue flower hair. Bonus round: If they stream or make videos they have an anime character somewhere on their screen.

These WvW upgrades are amazing and I’m surprised they are not getting more attention, i would buy the expansion for these alone
Or you can just ignore thier, bashing and do as you please. If a zerg comes in and wipes everyone out, it’’s thier right to do so. If you want to interupt duels then go ahead. kill them. it’s not thier place only. you cap lands. that’s what you do. if they wanna duel. then it’s thier risk they are taking. u are not obliged to wait for thier duels to finish. it’s thier job to maintain that area so that they can duel.
Well he could do that, but of course that has repercussions, for example if he interrupts my 1v1, then cries for roamers to help defend his upgraded camp some time later, guess what, he isn’t getting any help, which is my right to do so, same for a blob interrupting a couple of guilds having an open field fight, sure he could do it, but then he might find that when his beloved garrison is attacked that guild decides not to help, which is their right to do so.
its really cold in wvw
yeah, i was seriously wondering that, why in the world do they constantly wear winterscarves? it’s funny considering those people move around so much ala dbz style, make backlfips, jump several feat in the air, use hand to hand combat here and there. u’d think they’d be hot enough.
Serious answer. it’s got something to do with actual irl ninja’s wearing ninja scarfs from time to time. And then you have several anime exagarating on those scarfs, making them even more humoungous and all. the most recent example bieng the water-dark pokemon, Greninja.
When you stealth you go into an alternate dimension with no light and no air (that’s why they cant stay in there too long).
In other words its like space, so around -100 degrees celsius. Bring a scarf.
You’d be cold too if you had no soul to keep your body warm.
lets deal with the problem of nearly every piece of light armor being a dress or robe, and every piece of medium armor either being a mall flasher trenchcoat, or something that just looks silly.

Once upon a time WvW was place where u played with your team, helped you team, played for win, where u fought and killed reds with your team members. Now all i see is WvW turning into personal battlegrounds for individuals where team players are liability.
This still happens.
I just hope that people who dont want to play wvw can take thier duels, gvg’s, scrimms to some other place like guild hall arenas and leave wvw to those that want to play it like it was meant to.
“Duels, gvgs, scrimms” are not mutually exclusive with the above. Attempting to fracture the community will weaken it. Attempting to vilify people that do these things is dishonest.
There is nothing to give back, and nobody to give it back to. WvW is meant for all people with a copy of Guild Wars 2 with an account in good standing. Attempting to claim otherwise is selfishness and also futile. I am glad Arenanet is moving along with the flow, and reaching out for ways to expand its game mode beyond its original intentions to fit the development of the player base. They are not taking anything away from anyone, rather they are adding more things for people. Whether or not people appear in wvw is up to their own choice regardless if they fit anyone’s definition of playing.
for there you have been and there you will long to return.

Once expansion hit in and guild halls start to roll, are we gonna be able to play WvW properly?
To enter battlegrounds fight and kill any guys with red names over their heads, to capture and defend towers and keeps, to use siege and roam around, to be organized in small or big groups, to have your guild go out and play WvW to defend place we claimed with any means necessary, without any judgement.
To do all that without having bunch of “veterans” “guilds” “guild leaders” “pro mad skillz (watch me on twitch) roamers” bashing at you, cursing you and telling you not to do all that because you add up in 1vs1, interrupt their duels, gvg’s, scrimms, because you are danger that server might win matchup and rise up in rank, _________________________ type in all other stupid reasons.

I just hope that people who dont want to play wvw can take thier duels, gvg’s, scrimms to some other place like guild hall arenas and leave wvw to those that want to play it like it was meant to. The OP claims to be a real wvw player but really has no idea what that means.
And please rename this http://www.gw2wvw.net/ to http://www.gw2gvg.net/ ty bye
There is no way to play WvW “properly” and this guy has rose-tinted glasses on regarding “once upon a time”. SINCE RELEASE WvW has been a sandbox PvP environment with players playing WvW in many different ways, not the way the OP wants them to.
This guy ignores that there are different types of units in an RTS with different roles. He wants everyone to play WvW as an RTS where there’s only one type of role, the one he defines. Lame because that’s not how RTS works. Claims to be a “real wvw” player but really has no idea what he’s talking about. Ironically the coming updates to WvW and guild halls with HoT are going to make WvW unrecognizable from dreamworld OP seems to live in.
I’d give more consideration of what else the OP wrote but it really isn’t worth it. OP is just looking to stir up drama.

I bet the size is related to skill ranges. The arena will still be way more spacious than the original windmill area.
20s all day at the old windmill area, which was much narrower, but longer than this area is. All this will do is to force another meta change in GvG
Exactly. The windmill had that narrow choke point in addition to some hilly terrain features that became part of the tactics for that area. That all went away with OS, which in turn caused the development of a new meta. For example, gank was rudimentary and restricted in the windmill location. The openness of the OS allowed for gank to explode into the meta. This new arena will see the development of new tactics.
New tactics sounds great! And almost at a per-arena level, given the dynamic placement of obstacles. I’m really looking forward to this. It feels a bit small for 20v20, but I was never a big fan of such blob-on-blog games. 15v15 to 10v10 looks just awesome in this space.
I’m really hoping we see three-party fights. 2v2, then a neutral arena-master changing the field over time.
Down the road, I’d love some bigger arenas, built-in objectives (kill pts, respawn pts, capture the flag points). I hope this becomes “a thing”.
Can we just lock this guy in a room with all the people that qq about longbow being op and let them duke it out for awhile?
You know the longbow skills are weak. Why defend it like the aren’t?
I don’t know that at all. I have the sense not to look at skills in a vacuum. meteor shower does more damage than barrage but that is 1 skill on each weapon. You have to compare everything when you consider balance.
The entirety of the fire line while using full zerk nuker makes longbow look weak. THE ONLY skill on Longbow that calculates out decently is the auto attack. Nothing else has the damage of the fire eles weapon skill bar. Nevermind the utility it gets off it’s attunment swaping skills I’m referring to sheer damage nuke ability. There is an equasion that gives every skill it’s final damage output and I’m saying Barrage is not in line with other skills of the same type. Rapid fire is also not in line with the other skills. Being a single target only attack it should be higher naturally than a skill that hits AoE.
That’s because the longbow isn’t designed around every skill being a massive damage skill. You have 2 skills for dealing damage, the rest are for maintaining distance in order to deal that damage. Longbow ranger vs staff ele 1v1 the ranger will always win unless he is completely awful. According to you the ranger shouldn’t stand a chance because you only look at the pieces instead of the puzzle.
Sadly you do not stay in Longbow while in PvP. You said you do not. Why is that? If the pieces of the puzzle are all fitting together why do you go mele? If the damage output is where it should be why do you switch to a weapon that does a better job? You are not even listening to yourself.
Wait… do you think damage output is why you don’t see longbow rangers in the higher levels of PvP? Do you think shoutbows, cele ele’s/engi’s, bunker guard’s, even thieves have their place because of damage output? PvP is all about team utility and holding points.
I guarantee you if every map was laid out like foefire you would see a crap ton of rangers. The reason you see thieves instead of rangers is because thieves have much better mobility, especially on maps where vertical ports offer a huge advantage, and they can boon strip.
Damage has nothing to do with it. 1v1 vs a thief comes down to player skill because our range, cc and single target damage are incredibly effective against a thief.
You are adding in a players unknown where you are great at said skills. Why do you need OUTCLASS someone in such a way simply because it is unbalanced to begin with? I’m not saying there are not elite players that just flay out outclass other players and ranger is their chosen platform I know that is the case. Speaking as a sheer damage output a lot more battles would become a lot more fair if we were not having to work 4 times as hard to get the same result.
You sitting there pew pewing from 1k5 and you call that 4 times as hard?
Not sure what fights you get into but 1.5k disappears in an instant when 60 men come charging at you. At this point you flee. Assuming you got your weak kitten barrage off it does NOTHING to deter ANY of those 60 men. They walk through it laughing.
And the so OP warrior will stand and fight and will slaughter 60 person. And you think that a meteor shower will kill them too? You call that an argument? I call that madness…
You’ve been spamming the forums with your complaints all day long so far, in pretty much every thread. You’ve been given lots of advice and opinions so far, but you seem to ignore all of it.
Can’t you just stop already?
Probably still playing ranger.
As a long time gvg enthusiast, im really really excited about this. Im pretty much sold on expansion now lol.
the beautiful thing about gvg’s is that its meta encompasses so many viable possibilities. ive never seen more build variety anywhere else. until recently, only the engies and rangers have been left out. but we have rangers now, and we’ll have likely have engies in there when the patch hits. in other words, indirectly, they’ve done a great job overall balancing gvg’s. and they did this by staying out of it.
so we cant complain about the balancing aspect. major concern now with GH is the size of arena, and allowing for enough players to do 20v20.
