Without the enrage timer, raids stop being a test of your skill, since everyone can just facetank it and slowly whittle down the bosses.
This really gets my goat because it’s so patently not true. If you screw up the mechanics, the raid wipes; doesn’t matter what gear or what build, if you don’t stack in the green field/get off the platform/beat the boss before the platform is destroyed then the raid wipes. Removing the enrage timer just means that you have to beat the mechanics consistently more often, the fight goes longer but no matter your gear you can’t face tank the bosses because the mechanics will kill you.
At the moment there is literally no choice, you have to run zerker (or condi equivalent) or your raid will fail. That, to me, is bad design; enrage timers are a lazy gear/meta check, nothing more.
You’re right, I should have worded it differently: Without the enrage timer, the only thing left to do is taking care of the mechanics, while slowly [….]
Let’s face it:
Heart of Thorns is a goldsink. Not just any kind of optional goldsink that doesn’t hinder gameplay; it’s a mandatory goldsink that is bankrupting small guilds and likely has brought in a ton of revenue to the gem store in the form of buying gold.
This is a small compendium of issues my fellow guildies and myself have noticed that are completely ruining gameplay.
Firstly: The Guild Hall:
The expense of everything in it is WAY too high. Some guilds only have a few members but are Commanders that run WvW zergs. We can no longer cost-effectively afford to operate defenses on towers, keeps and camps. We are in Tier 2, yet haven’t seen any towers or keeps running these Tactivaters from any faction. No one can afford to get to the upgrades, and if they can, they certainly can’t afford to put them onto assets that will likely flip soon.
Legendary Crafting: Scribing Edition:
Scribing is not a crafting profession. A crafting profession is one that any player can pick up and within a few days or a few weeks, make their way to the max. Unfortunately, this is not the case; it takes an ENTIRE GUILD to fund one player to level scribing, which demands resources which are necessary all over the Guild Hall upgrades.
I get the massive costs involved in the Guild Hall are considered by many [large guilds] to be negligible; it’s true that a guild with 200 active members can get away with a cost of only 1 or 2 gold a day on these upgrades, whereas smaller guilds are bankrupted with costs of 50-60 gold per day. Players are now less likely to be recruited into smaller guilds if they think they might become liable for sharing in such a massive burden, when they can easily join a larger one for cheaper fees.
Guild Arena Requiring Expansion:
Our guild is a great small guild example: We have maybe 6 members with expansion, and another 15 or so active members without the expansion. Many of our players who didn’t own the expansion helped get the Arena 2 Restoration upgrade; only to discover that they were LOCKED OUT from using it. This made several of them stop playing immediately. There was no warning or caution. No heads up. Just a slap in the face.
Cost-Justification of Upgrades:
No upgrades are cost-effective. The resources that go into the synthesized nodes will never be paid off by the nodes they make.
Guild Portal:
After finally getting this, we realize it goes to 2 places and mission locations. WHAT?
It should be able to go to any Waypoint the operator has unlocked and chosen. This would justify the upgrade.
Onto The Next Issue: Dragon’s Stand:
…seriously?
One of the most vital resources to the Guild Hall lies in Dragon’s Stand, during the event…the event that only comes up once with a 2 hour cooldown…the event that usually fails quickly then you’re stuck waiting yet another 2 hours for. WHO HAS TIME FOR THIS?!?! Most adult players only get a couple hours at time to play; this requires us to essentially watch a Dragon Timer and wait for a painful event that likely won’t net the resource we need.
The Fix:
Things necessary to gameplay equality (WvW upgrades mainly) should be comparatively and relatively cheap. This should be primarily timegated, not held back by gold.
Make Dragon’s Stand event trigger more frequently and not rely on the World Timer. If one server’s event has failed, another one should be just starting.
Lower ALL Guild Hall costs. Seriously. We won’t demand our gold back or anything, but please lower the costs.
Make the Arena 2 available to all players to use, not just the Expansioneers.
-MAKE THIS RETROACTIVE TO ANY OTHER UPGRADES LIKE THIS
Make the Guild Portal capable of Portalling any players to a location the operator has available.
This is all I have for now, thinking about doing a thought-out video to further spread the message.
1. I met a snarky quip with a patronizing response.
2. How is my statement misinformed?
3. Casual means time gated, I have never disputed that.
1. It wasn’t a snarky quip. It was a sad truth.
2. Casual players can in fact not enjoy all aspects of the new maps, obviously.
3. Then how do you figure that people with limited playing time can enjoy all aspects of the map?
While running around tyria, I see SO many players on the map. There was one or two vets I was having a bit of a time with, took all of 10 seconds to ask for and get tons of help with the thing. LOL, you would of thought it was a champ.
The point of my original post stands, you SHOULD be able to solo anything you want, you SHOULD be able to enjoy the game, look around, discover stuff, and keep a eye open for events if you want to join in a big crowd fight. Just like tyria, I can run around by my self, have a blast, and if in the mood, go join a big crowd for a dragon fight, good times.
HOT really needs the nerf hammer, I paid 50 bucks for the game, and I should be able to enjoy it by myself, and not spend all my time running for my life, and FINALLY finding a hero point only to get stomped by a mob, or a champ spawn.
So I finally went into the new expansion. This Map is WAY to hard core for me, as a casual player. Every Hero Point is a freaking champ? Really The whole thing is simply confusing, and its hard to find anything.
So its impossible to really wonder around alone, no way you can snag allot of the Hero Points alone, and good luck finding allot of them.
In my humble opinion, the whole expansion needs one serious nerf. Leave the hero points at 10 points, turn them into vets, calm down all the freaking mobs, let us casual players enjoy the game, and do so alone. No fun if you have to spend all your time running for your life, instead of enjoying the game, exploring the map, and checking out the fun stuff.
I understand why some HoT maps force players to leave (in 60 minutes) at times. If enough players leave after a certain point, the map will close in order to keep the player count high.
Many of these forced closings happen often when map objectives are met. The map goes from day to night, everyone gets their participation rewards and some leave for other activities. The map wants to close. Those of us left behind must either leave or hope enough players arrive to fill the map back up before we are forced out.
I can accept the reasons for the change. What I cannot accept is the loss of my time invested in participation, especially if I am willing to keep participating. If I must go to another identical map that may not be as progressed as the one I’m leaving, why must I lose all of the time invested in my participation on that map? This effects my rewards from what I understand. The more I participate, the better my rewards will be.
My participation is my personal investment. I should not lose that because others no longer wish to continue playing. Map progression is a group dynamic effort which progresses, or not, with players coming and going.
I would suggest letting players keep their participation level upon map change as long it is to an identical map.

And aside from all the complaints you listed it’s still been completed by a pug group.
You say waypoints are too far, when in fact it’s faster to waypoint to the respective lane camp and take the wallow back to your lane landing you pretty much in the middle.
Just the fact you seemed to not have known that shows people still do not know the fight in its entirety.
I stand by what I said.
This hasn’t been completed by pugs and you know you’re just lying to prove a point you dont have. Just because there are a few random players (which is always bound to happen) in a map that organized by a huge guild which is communicating via voice chat doesn’t mean it’s a “pug group”.
I also like how you just completely dismissed a whole paragraph of problems I bothered to list with the event simply because you think I dont know about the nuhoc wallows. And then you made a topic on this forum complaining about players acted entitled. Wow. That’s sad.
I love how I often get comments about flawed design decisions taken down because they’re apparently not constructive to whoever is moderating this, but topics complaining about players complaining are totally fine.
It’s funny because if all these kinda complains people are having were feedback given during a beta period people would just go “relax, it’s a beta they’ll change it”, but because these maps didn’t have any beta time, something poorly designed is considered challenging.
Well, there’s no “Suggestions” subforum so here goes…
Dear ArenaNet,
May we please have a UI option to “turn off” the text on the right side of the screen (Story, Event, Dailies, Announcements).
This can get very cluttered and very distracting, and often when there’s meta events going on I don’t see things I want to see because things I don’t care about are taking up space.
It would be awesome if I could disable any or all of the above categories as I desire. More options are never a bad thing!
Thanks!
I’m adding my voice to everyone else here. Anet have successfully taken something that wasn’t broken and fixed it into oblivion. It’s just terrible on every level. I get that Anet love and worpship the power of RNG but do we really need to rely on its rarely benevolent hand to decide what activities our guild is going to partake in each week?
Frankly the OP nailed it with what he said. Even if the missions weren’t bugged to the Underworld and back, the increased limitations and lack of choice for guilds would still make this awful. Especially lowering rewards for choosing a category of play that a guild may actually have built its community around.
Lord in heaven, stop it with the hamfisted attempts at social engineering and just let your playerbase play instead of punishing them for not doing what you want. I get it, you’re in love with the idea of esports but, Gretchen, stop trying to make esports happen. It’s not going to happen. Between the first week of missions “just happening” to “randomly” roll a straight set of PvP missions and the penalty to rewards for choosing one game mode it really does feel less like fun guild community time and more like Anet’s attempts to shove its playerbase where it doesn’t want to be.
Guild missions are bad for guilds of all sizes. Small guilds who teamed with other guilds to jointly do content are stuffed because they cant do so anymore, and larger guilds are stuffed because its so flipping random/hard to get rewards for all those taking part.
Not a fan, AT ALL of the new layout.
Firstly I work weekends, so I have only a few hours to get my daily done and do the missions with my PvE guildies. This used to be no problem as we could socialize while being able do them within an hour or so. Now with the constant lack of rewards we try waiting out the timer, redoing the <insert bugged content here> and restarting the mission to work around the problem. All of these measures takes time BTW.
THIS should not be up to us to fix or find workarounds and makes my only playable hours on the weekend much less fun. I agree that the old way was much better!

I’m not the only one. Look at all the other posts, or try to go and play some missions and you will see how terribly wrong they are.
Not being the only one doesn’t make you some kind of majority. My guild had problems with the old guild missions. We often didn’t get credit for puzzles in the old guild missions, a problem that was never quite fixed. That’s guild credit, to be clear.
There was no reason to do treks before, but some people in my guild enjoyed them.
To be fair, there are bugs, but there are always bugs when things change. When the bugs are fixed, the new version will be fine…for some of us anyway.
You just used bugs as an excuse for why you hated the old missions and then said the new version will be fine because bugs will get fixed? If people didn’t get credit before then it makes no sense that the bugs will finally get fixed this time around.
They just added a ton of new bugs on top of the old ones an now we have twice as many bugs
Im probably gonna get flack for this but… I absolutely despise this map..
is it the events?
the mobs?
the bugs?
am I just a frog hater?
none of the above..
It’s the layout…
I have probably thee worst sense of direction possible.. which makes navigating this map a nightmare for me..
I can’t find my way around it.. and if not for the personal story (and Tp to a friend) I’d probably never have found my way to Dragons Stand..
I find myself constantly running in circles trying to find my way to Hero Points or PoI’s
and lets not forget events I am trying to get to that one minute I am above them the next I am below.. then above again.. then below again..
its beyond stressful and its soo darn irritating…
I literally get headaches trying to navigate this map..
please for the love of Grenth.. don’t make any more maze like maps like this..
at least not without some kind of marker system to help people find their way around..
for those of us with no sense of direction this map is a cruel torture
One thing that absolutely makes me raging is the Day Cycle. It’s tedious, takes too long, and unrewarding.
Another thing is that all the effort can go down into the toilet if Night Cycle failed.
Difficulty is ok. Coordination is ok. The work to activate Night Cycle is NOT OKAY.
I just had an organized map that worked hard in Day cycle, but the Wyvern boss decided to troll everyone by spawn under the platform aka impossible to kill. We had to stuck at T3 forever.
That moment when I realized I’m an idiot and wasted 1 hour+ to end up with nothing, no words could possibly describe how angry I was. Kudos to people organizing, but I’m done with the Day cycle none sense.

I always found the claims that Trahearne was some kind of “Kormir 2.0” immature and largely unfounded. During the Zaithan story, his character suffered from a couple of badly written lines, and sub-par voice acting. The biggest problem might have been the fact that a lot of other characters tell us about “that one time back then when he totally saved my kitten ”, etc., but we don’t get to see the rather bookish Trahearne do such things while we are with him.
The important thing – at least to me – however is that he does threat us (= the player character) with respect, he gives us plenty of credit for the things we do for the pact (while Trahearne is stuck doing strategy stuff – do players really envy him for doing all that organizing stuff instead of being out in the field?), he seeks our council, lets us hear his thoughts, and in general treats us like a friend!
Compare that to, for example, Caithe, who betrayed us, stole from us, and does even take a second and try to explain her motives to us – after all the things we did for her during the Zaithan story, like rescuing her from Faolin, reuniting her “worst soap opera cast in tyrian history”-type of guild, and taking down an Elder Dragon! I’d rather having Trahearne at my side than her any day.
I can’t say was surprised to see Trahearne die at the end of HoT ( I predicted Trahearne, Zoija, and Eir dying. 2/3 I guess…). The moment you see him in that vine pod, you know he’s not coming back out. But I do wish they would have given Trahearne a little bit more agency – he opens the “portal” to the mordrem dream for us, allowing us to strike at Mordremoth’s weak spot; decent enough storytelling. Now imagine after we defeated Mordremoth Trahearne would have told us, he couldn’t be separated from the vines anymore BECAUSE he did that dream portal thing. That would have turned his actions from a were plot device into an actual willing sacrifice, and, in my opinion, a stronger (and more worthy) death.
What I really dislike is how there is no epilogue whatsoever – and no, those few lines your comrades say to you after you are put back into the map don’t count, and the cinematic, while pretty, is a classical sequel hook, not an epilogue. I would have expected a ceremony to commemorate all the pact soldiers that died fighting the mordrem, including the pact marshal. He earned that much during the Zaithan story alone. And I would have also like to see a more personal epilogue between the player character and the companions, checking in with Taimi, Logan/Zoija, etc. And bringing back Caladbolg to the Grove. When I saw that item after the mission I was sure I would be going to bring it “home” to honor my dead friend. Turns out it’s just a souvenir from when you finally we allowed to shank that stupid salad who always stole the spotlight from you. It’s very disappointing.

Thank you for stating this. The biggest problem in HoT is suffering is not crashes or any of the other things being whined about in the fora but closemindedness and inability to adapt.
(edited by WeedyZeGreedy.8635)
I keep seeing people complaining about how mastery’s split people up, how “there aren’t enough” people at certain bosses, etc. and THAT’S THE POINT.
Events and bosses scale incredibly hard in the new content. It’s much easier to do events/bosses with fewer people rather than more. It’s best to spread out and get things done in groups of 5 – 10 not an omni-blob of 100 otherwise the bosses get more health or the events spawn a ton of champions.
I know it’s hard for people to grasp because of how all the other content in the game works but it’s not the same for HoT, or at least the majority of it.
And on that note: I’ve been farming the hell out of Verdant Brink and the same thing happens every single night cycle. A bunch of camps get overrun by the Mordrem because people are piling up in one place and the map never gets past T2. That, or a bunch of people just AFK until the legendary’s spawn and all blob them one at a time which takes twice as long because the health scales so much.
Just spread the word that it’s better not to zerg everything on the new maps. I hate to be that person who’s nagging it all the time.

all the things in HOT is perfect.
you have created a world with full of secrets, heavy exploration challenging mobs, treasure chest and cool NPC with funny and awesome writing. and i dont want to mention how awesome the exalted carving writing is.
people complaining about masteries need nerf and need more XP is complete wrong, they will get used to it after one month and everything will settle down.
look at this
Anet never stated you have to play like this i know you devs intend players to explore, talk, socialize, create community and defeat awesome bosses.
but these players are spreading rumors saying this is the way Masteries has to be gained. your game has a policy of play how you like.
so please don’t take care of any suggestion given till now about the grind as this the situation and these players are spreading rumors and converting more players and ultimately whole community is burned out so for these players don’t nerf your awesome game.
the Expansion is awesome and perfect doesn’t require any changes.
so Colin i urge you to disregard these post on saying the game is grindy because its the mistake of players choosing it to make it grindy not the fault of devs and you never told we need all masteries on day one.
Colin for god sake dont nerf anything the game is perfect.
What a shame. Listening to casuals, just because they have to work to continue their story mission. HOW HORRIBLE IT MUST BE.
Did you also complain back in GW2 when you had to get 10 levels to reach the next Story Line? How utterly pathetic.
This is not supposed to be a rush through the entire thing. If it were.. then what the **** would you be doing the rest of the time?
- It’s meant as a long term investment, not instant gratification. I wish. ******* would get it through their thick skulls instead of ruining for the rest.
Did Anet REALLY have to gate story behind hours and hours of grind?
The point I am at requires lvl 4 Itzel Mastery…..it’s taking forever to get level 3 gliding, been at it for about 3/4 hours (events are sluggish with exp etc) and I’m only half way…half way to gaining an ability to LEAN when I glide.
So you are telling me I cannot access the story because you want me to further grind?
If mastery points/exp was fun and not repetitive to get then yeh, fair enough, but you have made it necessary to zerg about with a commander (yet again), to equip my lootstick (yet again) and mindlessly follow a crowd because;
1. The events are far from soloable.
2. Only so many hero points are doable without grinding mastery and many you need a grp for.
3. Exp trickles into mastery bars. I get you want to make certain stuff ‘hard to get’ but GRINDING ISN’T DIFFICULT, IT IS BORING, A POOR MAN’S ‘INVESTMENT’.
I seriously feel like I grind less in wow compared to this game.
You should probably sort it Anet, cus if my memory serves, during the PAX announcement this came up about the mastery system;
“You do it once, this is all part of our no-grind philosophy for Guild Wars 2.”
Sheesh ONCE is enough and that still feels like a grind.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/2tjxe8/pax_announcement_wordforword_transcription_of/
^ this is a link to a transcript of the PAX announcement.
Mastery does not feel like progression, it feels like another layer of grind that is in the way of me enjoying the game.
Total exp is not really the main issue here. It is the METHOD of exp gaining. It is making you grind events that nudge it forward.
In core GW2 exp is thrown at you, in HoT the amount of ways to earn exp is scarce, you are reduced to meta event farming for story progression.
Simply add that to the total exp from mastery 2-3 itzel (1.7mil) equaling leveling to 1-61 (1.7mil) and extremely low exp gains in events (story wise it is asking you do go from level 1 itzel to level 4 itzel, not 2-3 btw).
Let’s throw into the mix the basic event exp for gold rating is 19k-ish
For level 2-3 itzel I would have to do 90 events. But remember, I am leveling from 1 – 4 for a new story chapter, so that would make it exp wise; 1 million + 1.7million + 2.5 million = 5.2 million (the numbers I use are rounded DOWN http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Heart_of_Maguuma_mastery_track#Itzel_Lore)
5.2 million / 19k Means I will have to do 273 events before I can continue the personal story.
So all in all tell me, is 273 events for 1 story chapter NOT grinding?

…a somewhat eerie feeling this. The forums are relatively quiet, the mice are sleeping, the owls are gliding gracefully through the night air…unbeknownst to them that in just under 4 hours, all hell is about to break loose. Enjoy it while you can fellow Tyrians.
Good luck to the devs and the whole arena net team, this is your finest hour. May Dwayna shed her light upon you, may Grenth keep you from the icy clutches of the playerbase, let Melandru guide your hand and Lyssa, your thoughts and logical thinking. And pray that Balthazar will lead you to victory. Abandons excluded because I killed the kitten out of him hundreds of years ago.
What incentives will players have to run dungeons after these changes go live? The entire game is based around doing what gets you to your goal fastest, and as of right now gold is the end-all-beat-all. If dungeons do not bring players to this goal, what incentive is there to play them??
Hmm … for fun? That’s why I and my friends run them. We pull everything, kill it, banter on Mumble, do as many paths of whatever we feel like and then we stop when we’re tired. It’s certainly not a huge gold source for me and I still have fun doing it.
Question to John Smith, though: Other than tokens, will anything drop in dungeons at all? Tonight’s casual fun run in CoE got my bags choked with things (usually I never see the Inventory is Full message on my dungeon/fractal alt), and I salvaged them for a lot of mats and sold off a few copper of minor runes and the like. Will we now be ending dungeon runs with bags as clear as when we entered?
Dungeons will still drop things as well as they will still have some gold, they will just have much less gold.
Edit meant to say still and said stop, sorry.
Frankly: eff you. Doing a couple quick paths is the only way I can make a couple gold in the limited play time I have. Everything else requires more people and time.
This game needs to be renamed “GuildTradingPost”.

Thanks for those who are looking forward to the event, and who post to say they are. For those who are posting up bile-filled negativity, I’d like you to step back and think about the situation: We’re having a Halloween festival in a timeframe when many, many players thought there would not be one. Dire “the sky is falling” commentary isn’t appropriate. Rude “You got nothing” comments have no place here.
We’re offering to join community events because they’re fun, and our joining in supports those marvelous people and guilds and groups who put their time and effort into creating such events for the community at large. This is in no way a case where we’re “doing nothing” when the team is presenting an entire festival for you at a time the company is also launching an expansion pack for our game.
This thread presents positive and encouraging new information, and I’d ask you to join in the spirit of the thread and not make rude, negative, or nasty comments. I mean, replying is optional, and thoughtfulness seems a simple thing to ask.

And now he gets to have the same experience I had without paying a cent. It would be nice if Anet did something to thank their players who have been playing since beta instead of trying to drive us away.
So you’re now trying to say that its unfair because he will get three years worth of enjoyment from the game? Because by that time you will now have six years worth of enjoyment. Unless of course your argument is that he will experience three years worth of enjoyment in a day, in which case nevermind, I didn’t realize I was debating with someone so… special.
Judging from the way Anet is taking this game and trying to get rid of veterans, I doubt anybody will be here for another 3 years
Could you explain how going F2P will drive vets from the game? Somebody? Anybody?
Bueller?
It’s not just F2P that is the issue with vets. There is also bugs that haven’t been fixed in years, dungeons never even touched, and Anet not even knowing their own playerbase and its wants to add to the list
datamined info earlier showed something about a trial account (this could be the F2P).
It also had datamined tidbits of maximum lvl of 15 for free trial (makes sense, only able to get into those start zone lvl 1-15 maps like queensdale)….
Couldn’t speak in map chats or use trading post and things like that either so I HIGHLY DOUBT its a full f2p game lol
Most likely just a free trial.
Thank you kindly for this info. I’m going to believe it until Anet says otherwise on Saturday.
That datamined info is over a year old. It is almost certainly not relevant. It’s probably something ArenaNet considered in the past and scrapped in favor of something else.
Yeah… quick to the trigger there, buddy.
I’m not against F2P as a whole. It can be done well. In some games. I’m not sold on GW2 doing it though…
But we don’t know yet. This is why IGN sucks. Because they spilled the beans without all the details.
We can’t claim sky is falling without knowing all the details. Or at least some more.
This doesn’t LOOK like good news, sure. But still too early to say. Wait until Anet gives their side of the story. Then come back and post this thread if it’s needed.
Other games going free to play meet the same thing. Bots, bots, bots, bots, bots, trolls trolls trolls, people with no feeling for the game because it is free just flows in and ruin the games for those that played it for a long while and those will start to leave one by one because the game they were used to and loved are now full of i don’t give a kitten-players.
I don’t see how this will be different for GW2. I whish they think this through one more time, if this is truely what they are going to do. GW2 have had a really great comunity so far, i don’t want that to change.
