Some day you’ll actually bother to split balancing for the kitten formats.

It’s a disgrace that weak elementalist shouts and mesmer’s already bottom tier DPS are getting nerfed just because of PvP.

Same goes for ranger, nerfing the one pet who doesn’t do absolutely non-competitive DPS.

You hired a raid team, why won’t you hire a PvE balance team, since it’s so obvious your current devs are focused on their beloved e-sports balancing at the expense of all other content?

I rarely like when Anet changes or “fixes” something in the game, but the recent fractal change was really good, not only does it not waste my time to do every single level now when i can just do t4 and get rewarded on all but i also made about 22 gold from fractal dailies today from 2 ascended mats that dropped. So im being totaly serious when i say i like this change and its step in the right direction god job anet developers ^^

Why are people so afraid of raiding?

Raid Leader: Guys, this raid boss is Rock. We gonna need to bring Paper. Food check! Let go.

After 30 mins of wiping

Raid Leader: Okay, this is not working. Everyone pinged weapon and chest piece so I can make sure we all have Paper.
Casual 1: [Scissors Weapon][Scissors Armor]
Raid Leader: Hey Casual 1, you are bring scissor. Do you have Paper armors/weapons or a Paper set up.
Casual 1: Well, this is how I want to play my class.
Raid Leader: It is fine if this is how you want to play your class. But we need Paper. So we gonna kick you for a actual Paper set up.

Casual 1 got kicked. Raid Leader went to LFG for a Paper set up and then proceeded to kill raid boss in 1-2 tries.

Meanwhile, Casual 1 logged on his GuildWars 2 forums and complained how toxic the raiding community is. To him, raid community is a bunch of elitist jerks, that does not appreciate his marvelous build.

The nature of MMR hell

in PvP

RubberDougie.2750

The nature of the MMR hell (Matlab analysis)
To those who are unfamiliar, MMR hell refer to the long streak of losses many players experienced in season 2. It’s caused by reducing MMR lead to reduced teammate quality which leads to further reduced MMR. This also applies to win streaks. Some people do not believe this happens, and think everyone who has this problem is bad (ROFL).

I have written a Matlab Simulation of the Season 1 (and unranked) and Season 2 algorithms to find out exactly why this happened and what factors were involved. I made some educated guesses on the distribution of player population and implementation of the matchmaker. The purpose of this is not to publish in Nature, but to reproduce the symptoms people are experiencing. If you are interested in the assumptions, please see the figures at the end of the post and comments in the source code. I also made the source code available to anyone interested in running this simulation. (http://www.ssnt.org/personal/pvp/pvp_sim.rar)
For the complete post with inline figures, see:
For Full Sized figures, see:

So without further delay, the pretty pictures

http://i.imgur.com/eFxtmkR.png

Unlike real players, true skill levels of simulated players are assigned. This allowed me to have a look at how matchmaking captures the real skill. Both algorithms were terrible, with S2 being a little better with the added “benefit” of vastly inflating or deflating rating of some players. In this simulation there were about 4.5% of stuck players, and that number did not decrease as season progressed.

So why is this happening? Let’s look at a few factors.

Login Randomness
Eliminating the login randomness not only kills the MMR hell, it also allow S2 algorithm to vastly out-perform S1. If everyone who played less frequently only logged in while people who played more often are online (In the other words, the number of players online is a perfect sinusoid), there is no snowball hell. This is probably why Anet thought season 2 algorithms was better on paper. But reality doesn’t work like that. People have jobs.

http://i.imgur.com/O1uJLQI.png

This happens because people can’t find even games during off-hours. Looking over the data for the stuck models, I realize they overwhelmingly had very poor number of close games. But before we get to that, there is another factor to consider.

Within-team MMR Tolerance

http://i.imgur.com/eZmb03K.png

Removing the limit for difference between MMR of teammates improved the situation dramatically. It did not eliminate the MMR hell (about 3.5% player were stuck) for S2, but it did allow the MMR to have some resemblance of actual skill. The reason is an increased number of off-peak games, which increased the chance of finding even games during these hours. This leads us to the heart of the problem.

Rating Error and Close games

http://i.imgur.com/O0T1eDm.png A
http://i.imgur.com/eEz1DP8.png B
http://i.imgur.com/0RX0EEw.png C

In every case (A-baseline, B-Nonrandom Login, C-No MMR limit within team), the Maximum Rating Error is a decreasing function of number of CLOSE games (team MMR difference less than 300). This can be seen from the Glicko equations. A close game where team MMR is identical changes MMR by five times the amount of a game where the team rating difference is 600. This means as far as Glicko is concerned, games between teams with vastly different ratings are not meaningful. The team with the higher rating cannot gain MMR, and the team with the lower rating cannot win.

The job of Glicko algorithm is to estimate a player’s true skill from CLOSE games. Without them, Glicko cannot rate players. While these streaks of wins or losses are subjectively satisfying or frustrating, they don’t provide any meaningful information about the players’ true skill. The job of the Matchmaker is to provide Glicko with these games from which true skill of players can be inferred from wins and losses.

By removing the limit on the MMR difference of red and blue teams, Season 2 matchmaker is wasting everyone’s time with strings of pointless games. It’s less efficient without any benefits. In less technical terms, season 2 algorithm is dumber than two bags of rocks. Relaxing teammate MMR requirement for the old algorithm would do a better job.

Assumptions

http://i.imgur.com/R2GV77G.png

This is the distribution of player models used. It makes the following assumptions:
- Most players are casual and plays a couple hours a day, but a small number of players …
- Online time modeled as sum of a sinusoid with a random variable, and is strongly correlated (R squared ~=.5) with a pure sinusoid.
- Player skill is normally distributed and is strongly (R squared ~=.45) correlated with play time.
The more you play the better you get.
- Most players are okay, but there aren’t many past 2500 ratings, and there are 2% player with zero true skill ratings, which represent AFKs, brand new players and people who intentionally throw matches.
- Most players are pretty consistent between games. Their performance in each game is a Gaussian random variable with a log-normal deviation. A 100 deviation means 95% of performances will fall within 600 rating points.
- The ratings were adjusted in each game assuming each player played a series of game in the time interval against every player on the other team. Email communication with Dr. Glickman indicates the algorithm was never intended to be used in a sport where teams can rearrange between matches. I also tested the alternative interpretation where the teams were adjusted as a single player. But it made no difference. Please check team_adjust in the source code for this implementation.
- Teammate MMR requirement was 100 for baseline and 1000 for the relaxed case.

It appears that the game is in a bit of a crisis at the moment and there is quite a lot of repair work to be done over the course of the next 12 months or so both in regard to rebuilding customer relations and in fixing some of the many broken things in the game.

I applaud the decision to focus on regular LS content updates over completing the remaining legendary weapons. However damaging in terms of player relations that decision may be, in the long run, ending the vacuum of regular content updates which we had all become so used to, will have a far more beneficial effect in stabilizing what I suspect is a rapidly falling player base.

However much some individuals may like it, there can be no doubt that HOT suffered because it was launched almost simultaneously with the game going FTP and the marketing department did a horrendous job of selling the ‘free core game’ idea to veteran players. many also thought it was overpriced and therefore offered poor value for money, and after much player feedback, Anet has admitted that many of the maps need substantially reworking to make them more fun to play for casual players.

In addition, WvW appears to be dead (I personally have not played since the borderlands map was changed) and The current Season 2 PvP league is probably responsible for the single biggest exodus of players from the game since launch.

As I see it Anet has 2 options to get things back on track:

1) Take 2+ years with the limited resources available to develop a much larger expansion pack that delivers value for money and hope that the game remains sustainable in the meantime.

2) Deliver another similar size expansion pack this year and give it to all HOT purchasers free of charge in the hope that many of the players who were disgruntled with HOT return and New players are attracted by the offer of the core game and 2 expansions for one price.

Thoughts?

Not sure why your nose is so brown about this, but yeah….if enough of their customers are getting refunds…that is a big scary thing to their apparently non existent bottom line.

Disagreeing with you is not the same thing as brown-nosing.

You think ANet are a bunch of lying cheats, I think they’re a bunch of incompetent hacks. You want to see the game crash and burn so that you can gloat and make people miserable, I want to see ANet get their kitten together so that I might one day have a good game to come back to.

If people get refunds, so what? It doesn’t affect my bottom line, and if the game crashes and burns, I have plenty of other games to play. It does, however, mean fewer people kittening on the forums and making everyone else miserable, so it’s actually a win on that front.

The disrespect coming from the tone of your posts is so real Mo, I have no idea why you’d think this tone is ok? How you expect anyone sane to care for whatever you ship however far off in the future after this, I don’t know. I certainly don’t care. I’ve pretty much stopped caring when I read Evan’s equally condescending posts in the pvp subforum and when you pushed any actual new content to summer. With this announcement and the way you have handled it, any last bit of care for this game I had and any trust I had in this company is dead in the water. Nothing you say will make us ‘feel better’ you say? Like we’re children who were just told we’re not getting the promised pony for Christmas? Fact of the matter is, we’re not children disappointed in a lack of free presents love, we’re paying customers. We paid you to deliver us these items, you took our money and you failed to deliver them. Its not about making us ‘feel better’, it’s about compensating us for your failure to deliver promised and paid for goods. When you do something that feels like you’ve just taken our money and then laughed in our faces, I don’t see how you expect us to feel goodwill towards your company. Worse, I don’t see how you expect us to pay for another expansion or your gem store fluff when you’ve actually just taken our money and then refused to deliver what we paid for. And it’s all delivered in a kitteny, disrespectful tone at that. I mean heck, you even tried to tell some people how they’re supposed to feel about HoT. Honestly… This is just wrong.

Won't be getting Legendary armor!

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

He’s right, we need to get legendary armor by other means than raids, like wvw or pvp. Gated behind raids is just bad, what would you think if Twilight was gated behind 100 lv fractals 2000 world bosses and 100,000 events done.

Doing raids is not unrealistic. They are easier than the average raid I saw in other games. People beat them in the first days after release.

Organized groups beat them easily, what about lfg sistem?

They are not designed for scrubs who use lfg system because then they would be boring for organised groups

Malediktus always delivers in such threads, keep it up please.

When somewhere someone disputes that people like you don´t use words like scrubs to describe nonraiders and deny that they are elitist and only want to play with their chosen people, I just love to direct them your posts so that they can see a prototype of such thinking.

I want to open pods.

But have to spend an hour completing the meta to do it.

Noxious Pods are suppose to be the reward system after completing the meta isn’kitten Like the chest room in AB and TD after the meta right? It’s meant to feel like a reward for you after accomplishing something, right?

Then why is it that they spawn around a ton of enemies?

Why is it that they spawn so far apart?

Why is it that there is not enough time to kill the enemies and run from pod to pod?

Why do I feel punished after completing the meta?

Why is the most rewarding thing to the meta, being able to access the merchant?

Why are Noxious Pods so kittening noxious???

Why can’t I just kittening farm pods on empty maps? My god, they’re already surrounded by enemies, spaced apart, and somewhat hidden. And on empty maps, that makes things that much harder. C’mon, it’s not like they’re rewarding to get after finishing the meta.

Fortunately, you can use “chat link format” to link items you don’t have in the game. For example, if you type [&Agr2LQEA] in the chat, it will appear as [Legendary Insight]. Here are the first 36 legendary insights code.

Besides the point of having so many unnecessary different types of bag drops, we also have same type/rarity champ bags not stacking together. For instance I have 2 different stacks of exotic Hierloom seed pouches, and 2 different stacks of exotics Fallen Adventurers Backpacks, despite the fact the are the same item. Sure I get they want people to buy more inventory slots so they put lots of junk in-game, but same type bags not stacking doesn’t even make sense.

I want the WvW meta to be the PvE meta. This current trend of maxing damage is sad. Nothing kills build diversity faster. I love fiddling with mechanics but when all things surviving or tank related are decried as a noob-crutch, it sucks the fun out of builds. Who cares if I make a build that can fight hordes of enemies? Some glass build pulls mobs in groups and clears them faster.

I was really disappointed in raid tanking. It wasn’t a boss trying to wreck yourface, it was you standing the right spot so the boss doesn’t wipe the DPS with gimmick mechanics. I went in thinking I was going to have to fight the boss, dodge big attacks, you know combat. Nope! Stand behind a mushroom! Run to Green. Walk in a circle. Repeat.

Next boss. Avoid orbs, walk boss to wall so people can cleave him and the wall.

Next boss, “You got a different char right?”

I don’t really feel bad about LEET people leaving, they helped cause this culture and were the same people who defended it as being good.

Why I like HoT as a casual player

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Shyanekh.4976

Shyanekh.4976

First of all, I should say that I’m very much a casual, solo player. I’m happy enough to lend a hand with world events, but dungeons, raids and the like aren’t for me. I don’t play for long stretches of time, just a couple of hours here and there.

Now, looking at a lot of the posts on this forum, I should be exactly the kind of player who loathes the expansion pack … but I don’t. It has issues, certainly. While challenge can be a good thing, there are some enemies who feel more cheap than challenging.

I do hope that we see some tweaks and balances as time progresses, but even the cheap enemies aren’t enough to stop me enjoying the game. I figured I’d make a thread covering why I’m personally happy with the expansion and for other people to say which bits of it they liked too.

First of all, I like the metroidvania kind of feel to the new maps when you first enter them. Initially they’re overwhelming and I tended to die a lot. Then you unlock your glider and navigation gets easier. You experiment with the elite builds and enemies become easier to handle. Bit by bit, you chip away at the jungle, uncovering new ways to navigate and fight.

On the subject of gliders, the ability to glide in central Tyria was a lovely surprise. I hadn’t kept up with the news much, so when my lvl 40 engineer suddenly popped open a glider I was delighted. It’s made leveling alts that bit more interesting.

I also enjoy the choice I now have. If I fancy a nice, easygoing bit of gameplay, I can spend some time in Central Tyria. Sometimes that’s all I want to do. However, if I want something more tricky, something that’s going to require some faster reflexes, I can head into the jungle.

Finally, I was impressed with how the jungle looks and feels, particularly when you first see one of the various dinosaur creatures. Admittedly, the mushrooms and some of the frogs can take a long walk off a short pier but otherwise I’m happy with the new enemies.

Again, I’m by no means a hardcore player. I’ve no doubt some of the better players out there can spot more problems than I. However, to be completely honest … a lot of the issues I’ve seen raised aren’t things that bother me personally. How about you? Anything about HoT that put a smile on your face?

Whoah there, way to escalate things over nothing. Didn’t realize people were so sensitive. Was simply stating that you must have been really bored to do such a thing. If you can’t handle comments without insulting people, don’t post on the forums man.

He said something you did was boring to watch (understandable for a 20m long boss kill). You said he (as a person) was boring, terrible at the game, had no clue about soloing, and was a “typical casual.” I wouldn’t call that “equal respect.”
