I think one of the big issues with this is that all complaints about the pre-purchase are being stuffed into one merged thread. the truth is, there are several groups, all with different opinions, and there are a significant number of people for whom the free core game – either its inclusion or the way it’s being handled – is a major issue.
what we need to do is separate the main complaints, and then discuss them individually, but any attempts to do so will probably just be merged before any real progress is made…
This. I don’t care at all about the “free” copy of GW2, nor particularly about the price (though I think it is high, especially the jump from standard to deluxe in the UK).
What I do care about is feeling disrespected as a customer. Which after the traits fiasco, the ongoing issue of the Infinite Continue Coin, the lack of communication etc. etc. etc. this is kind of the log that buried the already broken camel in the sand.
Sorry but i’m livid. I’ve had it UP TO HERE with all those white knights saying “people would be far less agitated if not for free core game bundled for new players”.
No. Stop insulting me, making me some sort of grinch that can’t bear other people’s fun. I’m all for them getting it for free, more players the merrier (especially in this game, and it’s pvp hehe).
My beef is that standard package does not feature extra character slot for a new profession that must be made as new character and is a payed (50$!) expansion content. If they cannot do their xpac buyer this basic courtesy, which is upheld by almost all and any mmorpg company, far less reputable ones at that, then we got a problem here. It’s about the principle for me (since i got a free slot anyway).

So they expect you to stump up £35 for an expansion pack with a new character class that you can’t even play unless you hand them another £10 or so for a character slot?
Way to alienate and flip the bird to your loyal players ANet.
(edited by Tachyon.5897)
I don’t care about vanilla being included in HoT
I don’t care about amount of content I get for my money
I do care that I’m forced to pay more, grind or delete one of my characters to experience content (Revenant) that I have already payed for …
it’s like buying new car … and then the retailer comes with “oh, and here are your car keys and they cost additional 20% of what the car cost …”

I think it would be fair offer with the standard edition a character free slot. New players get core game and HoT despite who is playing from beginning has to pay more to have something extra.
good job

The standard version of Heart of Thorns should come with a new character slot, it’s completely unacceptable to charge $49.99 and expect players to shell out extra on the gem store or delete characters in order to make a revenant.

Well based on the pre-sale information the most basic package will NOT come with a new character slot (or so it seems). That’s LAME. It really is lame for them to do that to their users, as buying the expansion does not immediately let you participate in all the new content. It’s an HIDDEN CHARGE that I would not expect from them.
I sincerely hope that I am wrong, and simply mis-read the pre-sale info (or you get 2 new slots total for the elaborated version), because if I’m not…I might not stop playing…but my satisfaction and opinion of ANET will definitely change. And with a lot of MMOs moving free to play (SWTOR? You can play for free 30 mins from now) the MMO “switching cost” is disappearing.
Also, have they started accepting pre-orders before they have announced a release date? I am not excited by that. If I’m going to pre-order (so much better for their cash flows; don’t let them pretend like they are doing you a favor by letting you give them what amounts to an interest free loan) I want more than access to their unspecified number of “weekend betas”, especially considering their poor communication around betas past!

Hey Anet Devs,
Don’t get me wrong, I love this game and I admire and respect all your hard work to provide us the best content you possibly can. I’ve been playing this game since launch and personally I can’t complain about the expansion price – 50$ is what expansions cost these days and HoT is totally worth the price, especially considering the fact that you’ve been giving us free content for 3 years.
What I am asking for is to treat your veteran playerbase with respect and to give us a choice – whether we want to buy the xpack with another base game OR with a character slot.
I believe it’s a fair deal and not asking for too much.
This slight change would definitely change the grim moods around the veteran GW2 community and raise your HoT pre-order sale. I’m sure you are aware of the current situation – a lot of people are simply boycotting the pre-order even though they’d gladly put their 50$ (or more) in your pockets at this very moment.
Please, consider giving us a choice. We’d be eternally grateful if you did.
With respect,
Yog Sothothe
Possibly a simple solution that would fix the anger of many veteran players. Don’t want to discuss the price here (Anet’s strategy), but the fact that veteran players feel neglected wrt future ones.
Standard
- 1 new GW2 account
- HoT expansion (that can be attached to any GW2 account, be it an old one, or the new one)
- If HoT is attached to an old account (i.e. not the new one), add 1 character slot to that old account
Rationale: veteran players should get a gift of equivalent value to the one offered to new players
Deluxe/Ultimate
All additional benefits are provided for the account on which HoT is attached.

To clarify: $50 is the price of the expansion. We included the core game as a free bonus to make it easier for new players to get into it.
You’re making your veteran players pay $60 for the HoT experience while a new player gets the whole thing plus the base game veteran players already payed for for $50. This is incredibly stupid. At least add a free character slot to the $50 so we don’t have to delete a character or pay $10 to play Revenant.

So which of your characters will you delete to play the Revenant? Or will you purchase the deluxe so you can get the extra slot or pay for the gems to get it. Existing player are not getting same value in fact in most cases are being forced to spent more.

I completely agree with the OP, I think it is the most balanced opinion I have read on the topic this morning.
The price itself is not a problem for me… I mean, I payed more for single player games that required probably the same hours to play HoT story alone.
What is really missing is a character slot for existing accounts. This would reasonably balance think for old players, and new players would still have the nice “extra”.
Please Anet consider this!

Pretty sure all of us got at least 20 stacks of Confusion seeing the core HoT offer naked. Using the “Purchase” skill surely promised to lead to a downed state. Mentally, at least.
On a side note, to all of them people comparing the costs here with WoW. This isn’t WoW. Everything else costs though, just like in a f2p game which IS f2p, whereas GW2 is not. It’s a lot better and wiser to compare GW with GW, not with f2ps or with subbed games. Although there are sturdy examples of both other types who have a more swift bug-fixing behavior and respectful and customer friendly approach than what GW2 currently has.
What ANet can offer on its own will does. Everything else is probably constrained by a “Shut up, lie or get fired” warning from the higher ups. Bug fixing, game balancing, content tunning all require time which the bosses don’t want to support and pay for. So they have to make more [Mini Rock]s.

Yup, that’ll do it. I can’t try out the new revenant without canning one of my existing characters.
So to try out one of the major features of the expansion, I need to spend ANOTHER $10, making it $60. (The ability to buy gems is a moot point. That’s just someone ELSE subsidizing that cost for me, that extra $10 is getting spent)
Also, to add on to your math, it’s a more economically sound decision to simply NOT upgrade my account, and get a second one for HoT, giving us FIVE more character slots and keeping our old account as alts for playing base content.
^^^^^^^^
Proof that ANet have kittened up royally.
Jesus christ, how did it get this bad? Do they not sit down and think about what they do before they do it?
I mean, of course not, it’s kittening ANet, but WHY DON’T THEY?
we love to give them the tools they need
to have big, important events!” Stop lying, ANet.

I pay the $50 with no complains if there was an additional character slot, I don’t care about a free core game.

The HoT expansion costs $50, available only bundled with a “free” copy of the core game.
When the core game goes on sale, it costs $10. We can thus pretty fairly feel that the “freebie” in the bundle is a $10 bonus value.
But the practical upshot for those of us who own the game already is this: by including the core game for “free” ANet has tipped their hand that they’ve effectively padded out the price of the expansion by 10$ (the cost of the core game at its lowest price) over what it might otherwise need to be.
You know what else costs $10? Extra character slots. Which is exactly what current players of the game do want and need with the expansion.
If ANet can afford to “give away” one “free” $10 value item with the $50 purchase of HoT, why can’t they do it with another? The value, monetarily, is the same.
This, I think, is why so many of us feel so slighted. Getting the $10 value of the core game is nice for new players, but it’s a thumbing of the nose at existing players who ANet must know would not want to spend $10 in that way. It leaves current (and often very loyal and long-term) players feeling like they pretty much have to subsidize the bonus value being offered to new players, while they themselves are left out in the cold, not given the one thing they really want which, mathematically, is a simple even swap out: an additional character slot.
The idea, certainly, is to generate more income by getting players to spend out on character slots separately. However from the consumer side of things, we can all see that if ANet can afford to give one $10 value freebie that they could just as well give another. It doesn’t make us feel like we are getting a fair value for our money. It makes us feel snubbed, taken advantage of, and resistant to buying anything.

So if you have bought the core game say last week, are you getting a refund when you buy HOT ?
if so cool because as i see it if ANet didn’t then that would be fraud right? they tell you that you need the core game for HOT so you buy it, then ship HOT with the core game so in reality you don’t need the core game ??? thats a law suit right ?
so if that is true and a refund was due, than would they be offering a refund to all the loyal players that have been playing for the last 5+ years?
when they announced the expansion and said you need the core game for it. every one was cool, a little pricey but that’s ok.
Apart from the time span 5+ years, 1 month, 1 week its the same you bought the core game whenever that was, and then they announced the expansion came with the core game.
if they don’t offer a refund to all, then who are they going to refund and is there a case for legal action ?
just asking?

Ok then. So seeing as I purchased the core game, could I get the expansion for free? y’know, to make it easier for me to get into it.
Same logic as ANet. I like it.

Fair enough. I already got my base game and I’m missing lots of contents. As a semi-veteran and semi-newbie, there are no added incentives if you already got the base game.

Exactly, content added in HoT is too small to price it for 45 euro, lack of even character slot is kick in the face. If it doesn’t change, I’m sure playerbase will dive down like (no offensive intentions) numbers during holocaust.

This is my biggest issue.
They are adding 9 elite specializations and 1 new profession. 20% of the profession based features are the REVENANT.
Not having a character slot with the purchase means, in order for me to have a Revenant when HoT launches:
- I need an already empty character slot, or
- Buy a new character slot for $10, or
- Delete an old character slot (but they’re adding this horizontal progression system to the game, so players don’t have to delete pre-existing characters)

You know as well as me that is marketing BS, you are already ripping off many people, dont treat them like fools too. Have a bit of respect for your players before you say things like that.
Behaviour like this is wy nobody likes marketeers, you not even made yourself look like a condescending prick but many people in your company too.

What about converting Dragonite Ore, Bloodstone Dust and Empyreal Fragments to currency? Now that would actually be helpful.
what annoys me on porting is, that it got a nerfin a late patc, which never happened
or in other words, i thought anet changed ports so, that u dont port, if there isnt a valid path
But why are Mes, thiefs, ele and guards still able to port for example in midpoint in niflhel to the upper field? Or in Khylo from the side of the tower up to the wooden bridge?
Others need to run seconds or up to a minute to get there and with a port in a second
that should not work when anet says it shouldnt work.
