1. No really, what happened to their ability to shape-shift?

They can still shape-shift. This was one of the features about them that drew Scarlet to them. Their ability to shape-shift makes their forms more malleable and thus a better subject for the transformation in the nightmare plant.

2. Is it still true that the Oratuss invented the prophets to control the krait people?

This is ancient history. No one knows the truth behind this, not even the krait—although most krait would not take kindly to the implication. If and when we reveal the truth behind this, you’ll hopefully be there to discover it in-character.

3. Does “not anytime soon” in reference to joining the pact indicate that you’re willing to change their ‘black hat’ status if the story demands it and that the possibility that they can change exists (it’s a living world after all cough) or is it just your way of saying never? :P

I’m always willing to make changes to characters if it makes sense with the story. I learned long ago to never say never. I mean…look at the charr.

4. Last but not least – need moar krait interaction ingame. Preferably without the annoying whining Quaggan middle-(wo)man. ;(

They’ll be around for a long time.

I’ll tell you a little secret about the krait, that’s perhaps not so secret, but that may help you understand how and why they’ve changed since GW1. The krait once believed themselves to be the top of the food chain.

But, in these intervening years, they’ve been attacked, driven from their deeps, scattered into smaller groups, and forced to move into more shallow waters. The rise of the dragons gave them a little taste of humble pie. (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Unending_Ocean)

This group of krait are hungry to regain their previous level of power and confidence, and they believe that the one way they can do it is via their prophets. And Scarlet offered them a chance to take back what they’ve lost.

As the wiki says, “Krait doctrine fortells the return of the obelisks’ prophets, bringing with them massive armies to flood the surface of the world and destroy other species.” (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Krait)

They may have wished they could do it a different way, but this particular group of krait agreed to Scarlet’s offer of obelisk shards and the chance to “grow” a prophet.

Official state of skill lag and server optimizations

Keep in mind that there are a few very different issues being mixed up here. “Skill Lag” as discussed in the original post here is referring directly to Game Server CPU usage. I want to ensure we are all on the same page, so here’s a little refresher:

  • Game Server CPU usage (which is the #1 issue discussed here)
    • Let’s be honest, Guild Wars 2 has a lot of moving parts, and the Game Server is pretty much always in the thick of it.
  • Player/Client → GameServer bandwidth
    • Most cases usually come from players having other heavy traffic going on while playing the game, weak WiFi signals, or their ISP is having difficulties.
  • GameServer → Player/Client bandwidth
    • This can happen sometimes in our datacenters during peak hours or when hardware is having difficulties, but normally resolves very quickly.
  • Client frame-rate
    • CPU and/or GPU bound hardware
    • Extremely heavy combat, dense populated areas, and/or effect spam (which causes a lot of overdraw, which can cripple even the beefiest hardware )

So how about what you actually want to hear… When are more improvements coming?

Like always, I don’t have a date to toss around (yet), but I do have a couple things that are well on their way, and hopefully will make it in the next few releases (fingers crossed). So, what can you expect?

Another round of Game Server optimizations

With most of the previous improvements to the Game Server, I’ve tried to focus on improving combat responsiveness. Its just not a fun experience when you try to execute a skill and either: A: Nothing happens, or B: It just doesn’t execute in a timely manor (which is arguably worse). The changes coming should make a nice impact on content that has large densities of creatures and/or zergs of players.

Though, not all “Skill Lag” scenarios are a product of the bullet points stated above. There are other causes of input delay, and a good example of this would be Ranger Pets. I’m sure plenty of you agree that their responsiveness has been arguably, well, next to none. I recently spent time working on improving the interaction Rangers have with their Pet using the Command Bar. I’d love to hear your feedback on this once it ships. Issues like this are something I definitely plan to continue improving upon (Necromancer Minions also come to mind).

Another similar issue that has been extremely frustrating in combat is trying to hit objects like Engineer Turrets (I’m still having nightmares of Graveling Burrows). Or, rather, turrets getting hit by attacks that seemingly shouldn’t have hit them, resulting in what seems to be “lag”. This is something that myself and a designer spent some time tuning, and the results are pretty self-explanatory. I believe some of these changes are actually coming as soon as the next release, though this will only affect attackable objects that don’t have navigation-blocking collision (turrets, some siege equipment, etc).

And, of course, there’s more non-performance/optimization related improvements well on the way that’ll increase the general experience and responsiveness of combat. An example would be Mesmer Illusions/Clones/Phantasms that unreliably attack their target – Warden, I’ve got my eye on you!

Lastly, client frame-rate and memory usage is still being actively worked on. I’ll have to follow up on when more improvements will ship, but I know there are some exciting things in the works.

Thanks Christina for your lovely post. We shared it with the community at large on our social medias.

Hey! This is amazing that you shared your story. I contacted you ingame because the Guild Wars 1 and 2 community do a charity fundraiser every April ingame for Multiple Sclerosis! We are hosting it on the 19th this year…but haven’t posted the final details yet. My mom has MS…and I totally understand people not understanding. I am a huge avocate and an ambassador for the MS Society in Canada. I hope that we can get in touch so you can see what this amazing community does for MS and helping to spread awareness Thanks soooo much for sharing your story! <3

Hi Yailith, it looks like you’ve already used the In-game Events subforum for a past event but we’d like to encourage you to do it again for this event. If you could also send us an email at community@arena.net with the details of the event, we’ll see if we can help promote it! Thanks for your work on organizing such a great event.

On behalf of the writers, artists, game designers, and everyone else who contributed to Taimi’s character development, you are very welcome.

Speaking as a writer, one always hopes one’s characters will matter to the audience as much as you describe Taimi mattering to you. I am honored for my part in inspiring such a reaction and I am moved by your eloquent description of the positive impacts Taimi’s character has had on your outlook.

All of us here at ANet are sending you our most positive vibes—hang in there. I sincerely hope the support of us and the larger GW2 community continues to be a source of comfort.

Now bring on them cookies! <JK—in all seriousness, this thread is all the sweet reward we could ever hope for, but if there are cookies on top of that, we’ll take them, too :-)>

To the devs who worked on Taimi, who wrote her and created and animated her model:

I want to thank you for Taimi. I live with multiple sclerosis, and while I was only diagnosed a handful of years ago and am looking forward to a future where I won’t be trapped in my own body, I value characters like Taimi more than you can know.

My greatest trouble spots are my legs, specifically the joints in my hips and knees. There are days that I wake up and I can’t get out of bed. I’m young (in my 20s) and I walk with a cane and have a handicapped tag for my car – and I get nasty looks from people all the time because I’m young and, clearly, I shouldn’t need a cane or a handicapped space. I’ll never forget the day a pregnant woman berated me outside a grocery store for taking the handicapped space she wanted.

When I play games, it’s usually as an escape. I like to imagine that I’m the perfectly healthy Commander Shepard, or some outrageously good looking Final Fantasy character on a quest to save the world with magic. Games take me out of my situation and, for a little while, allow me to be someone else. Maybe this is why I play a hyper-mobile d/d Elementalist.

But when you introduced Taimi, I was overjoyed. I didn’t play the Marionette weapon testing update, so I didn’t see Taimi until just recently when I was mucking around the refugee camp in Gendarran. The friend I was playing with pointed her out, and I think I shrieked loud enough to wake the dead.

I don’t know where you’re going with Taimi. But honestly I don’t care. Because now, in Tyria, I can imagine having a giant golem cart me around when I can’t feel my legs or when they hurt too badly to walk. Now when I get derisive or pitying looks, I can take a minute to imagine I’m sitting on a golem’s shoulder like a complete kitten.

So thank you for thinking of people like me. Thank you for thinking about how someone with a disability might get along in your world. And thank you for making her awesome.

Christina

March 18th Glory change FAQ

in PvP

Hey everyone,

Since the announcement of Glory removal, there have been a lot of questions popping up about what this means. As such, we have put together an FAQ to help answer some of these questions. If your question isn’t listed here, it is likely that we are not ready to discuss it at this time.

IMPORTANT: Please note that the March 18th maintenance build is not the next phase of PvP rewards. For reference, check out John’s blog post here. This build will only remove glory and increase rank points earned.

Q: Why aren’t people with glory boosters being compensated with different boosters or something along those lines?
A: We will not be converting glory boosters because we announced that we would be phasing out glory in John’s blog post and it wouldn’t be fair to the players that used up all of their boosters since then in preparation for it. However, players that spent gems to purchase glory boosters directly that have not used the booster will be eligible for a refund. For those that did purchase them, they can file a ticket here.

Q: Do we need to put our PvP armor in our locker on 3/17 so it can be “converted” or can we leave it on our characters?
A: No, this is not the next phase of PvP rewards. This is a maintenance step that we need to do as we make the bigger transition.

Q: Will we be able to craft PvP related gear after 3/18?
A: Yes, you will still be able to craft PvP related gear. This build is a maintenance step that will only remove Glory and increase rank points earned.

Q: Will rank points remain the same?
A: Starting on 3/18, we will be awarding increased rank points in all areas of PvP.

Q: What is happening to the rank reward chests and their respective vendors?
A: The chests will be removed from the game as a reward. You will still keep the ones in your inventory until they are used, but we will no longer be giving them out or selling them in any avenue.

Q: Will we be able to sell PvP materials to npc vendors similar to tournament tickets?
A: These materials are not being removed as part of the maintenance build. In this update we are only removing glory and making an adjustment to the amount of rank points earned.

Q: Will we eventually be able to use PvP rank/cultural/dungeon armor skins in PvE/WvW?
A: Yes, players will eventually be able to take their looks across game modes; however, this will not be happening as a part of the maintenance build on March 18th.

By players, maybe. Somehow she ends up being the voice of reason in the teenage angst festival that is her guild . Or maybe its just the gushing even other Sylvari do about her (“Have you ever been hunting with Caithe?”) piled on top of the general fawning heaped on Sylvari by NPCs the world over .

Her guild distrusts her. The people that associate with her guild distrust her. Just about every non-sylvari NPC we see her contact distrusts her. The only praise she gets is from other sylvari, and it’s just the praise the sylvari give to all of their firstborn.

Caithe is the only NPC in the entire game who is unimpressed in some fashion by Scarlet.

Two npcs. Canach didn’t care for her much either. Though, judging by his dialogue, she probably bruised his ego in some way.

^Might this be because Caithe compares Scarlet (or Ceara back then) to herself? It can be ignorance and/or arrogance from Caithe, but maybe Caithe knows something (or someone) that made Ceara look insignificant.

I’d argue it’s to Caithe because of how Caithe viewed Ceara. In Twilight Arbor, Caithe says she remembers Ceara but that she wasn’t impressed. Pale Tree, on the other hand, makes mention that she was gifted and the like. Almost everyone else did.

Caithe is the only NPC in the entire game who is unimpressed in some fashion by Scarlet.

I think what she’s saying isn’t as important as who she’s saying it to.

Why not address it to the Pale Tree, why not anyone else who doubts Tyria needs her, which is almost everyone?

She states she knows one of Caithe’s darkest secrets or perhaps even more than one and we know from the Aetherpath that Scarlet and Ceara knew each other, though how well is not explicitly stated, just that Caithe ’wasn’t impressed’.

Either way, I think the blades are a small part of her overall ‘battle suit’ we’ll see her in during next release, and I hope this secret is revealed, be it either Scarlet just screwing with her and there is no secret or the actual secret itself.

If Zhaitan had specifically wanted LA then he would have gone after it. As it stands there were never any major Risen attacks on LA (I’m ignoring Sea of Sorrows).
Had Zhaitan been aware of whatever if under Lions Arch he could have flown over and dealt with it – we wouldn’t have been able to defeat him.

I would count the Claw Island attack as a major attack against LA. Without the Orders helping the city, it would have been completely overrun by Risen and taken over.

Plus, Zhaitan hasn’t really moved the entire time it has been awake. It seems perfectly content with only sending its forces out to take care of stuff. This seems to apply to most of the Elder Dragons, especially from a gameplay perspective.

It’s not really realistic, but having lazy (or just slow) Elder Dragons evens out the playing fields. With how powerful the Elder Dragons are, they could have easily conquered all of Tyria in a year, if not a couple of months time. All they would have to do is a fly over of the land and corrupt/destroy it as the go.

So, sure, if Zhaitan wanted something, it could have easily taken it. But if it did that for everything, we (the player characters) would have probably either be corrupted or killed a long time ago.

It makes me wonder if Zhaitan wanted LA for the leyline convergence under it…

If Zhaitan had specifically wanted LA then he would have gone after it. As it stands there were never any major Risen attacks on LA (I’m ignoring Sea of Sorrows).
Had Zhaitan been aware of whatever if under Lions Arch he could have flown over and dealt with it – we wouldn’t have been able to defeat him.

I would disagree, about not sending a major attack on LA.

He took Claw Island, but thanks to the mentor(s) and player character, the force was beaten down sizeably (per Vigil storyline right after Claw Islands’ fall), so a sizable force couldn’t have been sent to LA. However, after the “feint” assault on Lion’s Arch, Zhaitan struck the Orders’ HQs, nearly toppling the biggest threats to Zhaitan.

I don’t know if Zhaitan was truly after Lion’s Arch. I think he was trying to destroy the biggest threats to him – just like his assaults during Forging the Pact (trying to keep the newly formed Pact from obtaining ancient history that could help them defeat him; and trying to kill the Marshal at the same time) as well as the “dishonored by allies” fear storyline, in which he sends a mesmer to try to frame you, the biggest of all threats, and assassinate Trahearne again. Even in Battle for Fort Trinity, he tried to take out the biggest threat.

All of Zhaitan’s big moves has been to remove potential threats – though he never bothered to send his full forces, which I attest to future-Trahearne’s statements during A Light in the Darkness, that Zhaitan grew overconfident because he awoke on a nation of ready soldiers and magic.

I suspect Scarlet’s doing the same, even now. Her first assault was via the Molten Alliance, attacking norn and Iron Legion (two of the four biggest national supporters of the Pact); second was via Aetherblades on Lion’s Arch (third biggest national supporter of the Pact); her third pre-planned assault was via Toxic Alliance on Kryta (final biggest national supporter of the Pact). Then with Origins of Madness, we saw X’s over each Orders HQ and Lion’s Arch – she couldn’t have (likely) known that the probe for searching ley lines was going to trigger at LA. I think she was intending to assault the X’s after the drill attack, and it just happened that the probe that turned green was at one of the next targets.

Even though her arc is closing, I don’t think this assault was intended to become her final action.

This also matches the actions of the other Elder Dragons’ risings:

  • The Great Destroyer awoke to annihilate all life, as Primordus doesn’t use living beings in his corruptions. When Primordus awoke, he finished the Great Destroyer’s job underground – whatever races the Great Destroyer didn’t kill or force out of the area, displacing them, Primordus did.
  • When Jormag awoke, the first thing he did was topple kodan icebergs and assault the norn. Even before awaking, Drakkar spent years – decades even – obtaining a cult (Sons of Svanir) and using them to raise Jormag; even before awaking, Jormag and his forces was dividing the races.
  • When Kralkatorrik awoke, he immediately sought out the biggest threat: Glint. Even when passing by, he struck an attack on Ebonhawke – something insignificant in the long run compared to him, but a fortified structure that held two military camps – it wasn’t even his main goal, but he went and attempted a minor assault on a potential military threat.
  • Even the deep sea dragon went and assaulted, not enough to wipe out but force out, the vicious krait, resilient karka, and assassin-cultured largos.

All of the Elder Dragons’ first noticeable assaults, is them weakening or attacking potential threats – rather than them first seeking out ambient magic and corrupting the land around them to make minions (only Zhaitan has not corrupted the land itself into minions; but he didn’t really need to either, thanks to waking on a mountain of corpses).

If the entity is Mordremoth, that would be what Scarlet’s doing – on top of whatever plan she has for the ley lines too.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

Indeed, they are fully aware that people do data-mine, and as such I found it rather weird that they would include such information (if real) in the dat-file, especially that early.

But time will tell.
Personally I think that while the basic story might very well follow what they have released, it is likely that it will play out differently.

However if you are really into gw2 lore and how the world changes, you might have hype for a few minutes after discovering what’s happening.

That’s i guess the problem about the theorycrafting theories. If someone actually finds the right guessing and you read it (and you believe it makes sense and will happen), the surprise feelings are gone when it actually happens and your reaction lacks of emotion.

In your opinion, since you appear to have seen the datamine, what would be the largest reaction from the community? I am actually curious what to expect when I get off work, since I’ll be starting work again next month.

If they give us a lot of information and details, animations, events, etc and it feels like really awesome… the ending of the LS might be incredible. Regarding the pronunciation: it was always intended to be as Canach pronounces it, “KYAR-ah” or if you prefer, “kee-YAR-ah.” We settled on the hard-K sound at the front and the multiple vowel sounds in the middle because that was one of the potential acceptable pronunciations (names like Kira and Keira are derived from it) and the soft-C or S sound at the front took the name too close to “Sieran” territory).

I believe this release marks the first time Scarlet’s original name has been voiced out loud by any character (previously Caithe mentioned her by name in an unvoiced conversation).

In addition, regarding the name’s origin/meaning: we considered a great many names with a great many meanings. Along with the other meanings of Ceara (and its variants) like “spear” or “dark,” one of the variant meanings was “fiery red,” and the collective impact of all those definitions pushed the name Ceara into the winner’s circle.

also, YOU MUST IMPROVE YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF OLD IRISH NAMES. it’s see-ah-ra, right? haven’t seen anything in-game that made it seem like i was pronouncing it wrong.

canach met scarlet “briefly, as ceara”. said what everyone already knew about her personality. she was too busy being arrogant and egocentric to pay attention to people around her or care, so he didn’t like her and went on with his life. as for what he knows of scarlet, i think it’s just what he overheard from prison.

but yeah, it sounds canach is on the path of redemption. he refused to escape from prison and intends to serve his full time. he wants to avoid southsun because of his past mistakes too.

Yah, seems like that theory people had about Canach joining the “new destiny’s edge” might end up coming to fruition now that he’s trying to redeem himself and all.

Also, it blew my mind when Canach said “Ceara”. I always figured it was pronounced See-ra, but he pronounced it Kee-ar-ah. Minor thing, but yah. Surprising.

Hey, I was reading Scarlet’s journal again. She writes,

“Tonight, I saw it. I stared into the abyss, and it stared back at me. So much power. I don’t know what’s real and what isn’t anymore.”

This is similar to the words of Friedrich Nietzsche:
“He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you.”

Nietzsche promoted an idea he coined the “Apollonian/Dionysian dichotomy”. Could Ceara be wrestling with herself? Ceara may represent Dream, whereas Scarlet represents NIghtmare? I really don’t know, although I think that maybe this dichotomy served as the inspiration for the in-game concepts Dream and Nightmare.

During story mode of Twilight Arbor, the same analogue is used for Faolain, when she first saw the Nightmare, I believe. The idea used was that Caithe saw and looked away, but Faolain continued looking and it consumed her. Don’t recall exact wordings and it’s not on the wiki sadly… And it may have been Edge of Destiny, in fact.

BTW, the inspiration is already stated long ago to have been the Seelie and Unseelie Court of Scottish folklore. Though that very commonly used line may have been the inspiration between these two bits, the line (stare long enough into the abyss and it stares back into you) is used almost everywhere.
