Opinions on the Largo Race!

The tengu are for more customizable then the largos, as well with us knowing almost nothing of the tengu in the lore where as the two times you meet the largos much is revealed about them that further narrows the customizing and lore for them. Bottom line tengu are an open book in many was and much of the ground for them to become playable has been made.

Btw largos are viewed as assassins only, so we only allow the thief class to play them? I know there would be ways around it but to most people they are simply more appealing as npcs.

DOLYAK EXPRESS: CHARACTERS AND RELATIONSHIPS IN TYRIA

Greetings,

Today, we have answers to some of your questions about characters and relationships in Tyria from this thread and the other language forums. Today’s answers come from Angel McCoy, Bobby Stein and Scott McGough.

Q: Do charr understand the concept of love, or do they select merely based on primal instincts like protection, best fit, alpha status and alike (much like in an animal society)?

Angel McCoy: Charr most definitely understand love, fall in love, fall out of love, and love friends and warband-mates deeply. When it comes to procreation, opinions vary. There are those who look for the partner with the best “genes,” and there are the surprise pregnancies as well. There are couples who love each other and want to make little versions of themselves. Everyone is an individual.

Scott McGough: I’d like to add that the charr are largely a military culture, so the qualities that make for a good soldier (bravery, fighting skill, leadership ability, loyalty, etc.) are considered attractive, but that is not the only criteria a charr has in terms of who they seek out as a compatible partner.

Q: I play a charr, but I can walk through Ebonhawke without getting the stink eye – where is all this sudden tolerance coming from?

Angel: The cease fire while treaty talks are under way. Humans and charr are currently under a cease fire arranged between the legions and the queen. Only renegades and separatists take action against the other race, and they’re bad guys.

Scott: Also, random open hostility by humans toward charr in Ebonhawke would raise the ire of both Divinity’s Reach and the Black Citadel, and drawing too much attention to the Separatists’ provocative underground political/martial movement is a sure way to get that movement crushed before it gets results. In other words, the anti-charr humans of Ebonhawke don’t like charr, but they know enough to bide their time and pick their battles.

Q: Are there relationships between races in Tyria? We know of Braham and Rox…but is such a thing more common or the rare exception? And is there a possibility for cross-species offspring?

Angel: That is up to each individual to roleplay. You will currently find no official cross-species NPC relationships in the game. Rox and Braham are good friends. That’s not to say we might not one day have one.

Q: Who were Taimi’s parents? What is Zojja’s role in Taimi’s education?

Bobby Stein: We intend to explore answers to both questions in future stories. Stay tuned.

Q: Why can’t Logan and Jennah love each other freely or marry each other? Is there a tradition preventing them? Can’t the queen choose her consort? Is Logan not highly born enough (he is still Gwen’s descendant)?

Angel: The nobility of Kryta is modeled on historic medieval feudalism. It’s unusual, and frowned upon, for people from different social strata to intermingle. Of course, there are always trysts between gentry, commoner, and street folk, and even love. But, socially, especially from the point of view of the gentry, it’s considered demeaning. There are also real social boundaries to it. A noble must behave a certain way and speak a certain way when in noble company. Most commoner and street people don’t dress, talk, or behave that way, and they actually disdain that kind of “snootiness.” There are stories in history of a royal loving and even marrying a commoner, but these are rare and come with heavy repercussions to both usually.

Specific to Logan and the queen, there are a lot of political machinations going on behind the scenes. They have many hurdles to overcome if they’re to be together, the least of which is that they both have bigger priorities to deal with. We’ll delve into these more at a later time.

Q: Why the focus on the characters instead of the world…

Bobby: We’ve populated most of the explorable and city maps with lots of ambient characters, creatures, events, and secret areas. I don’t believe we’ve chosen one over the other, since we’ve put a lot of resources into building an immersive, interactive world that players are free to explore at their own pace.

Q: …And why the emphasis on providing a narrative of a character before we’re really given a chance to make our own assumptions and preferences about them?

Bobby: For the Personal Story, we wanted to give players the opportunity to do a little roleplaying by letting them customize the look of their characters and pick their backstories, which affect certain chapters in their journey. This is a bit of a change from the original Guild Wars, but we felt it was an important evolution of the player experience.

Q: Recently, characters seem a lot more fleshed out and entertaining. Is this due to a specific change in how you write or just learning from experience?

Bobby: Thanks for the compliment! We actually haven’t changed too much about the writing itself, but we have put more resources into the presentation, which is probably what you’re noticing. We’ve learned a lot over time, and as a result we’ve evolved our story creation process. Our story meetings these days are a lot more involved and are very collaborative across disciplines. People on the teams are becoming very invested in these stories and characters. That makes a huge difference in the quality.

In the past, we generally didn’t build story instances where the player could interact with these characters, nor did we have the resources to build a lot of cinematics or special areas like Scarlet’s Lair. We even wrote (and voiced) a lot of character-building moments that unfortunately never made it into the game due to time constraints.

We examined player feedback over the course of 2013, and realized that we weren’t giving people enough opportunities to get to know our characters or understand the season plot. We were being a little too secretive and leaving too much to speculation. So starting with the Nightmare Tower releases we built more content specifically to impart story and develop our characters, and the responses have been overwhelmingly positive. Because of that, we’ve more closely partnered with designers, artists, and audio folk to continue to improve the story and characterization.

I’m especially excited about the remaining episodes of this season. We’ve got a couple of surprises in store, so I hope you’ll join us for the season finale!

Q: Do you have plans, or would you consider, adding a prominent gay male couple to the world (not sectioned off into one sylvari personal story path), and additional prominent people of color (i.e. non-white human/norn) to the world?

Angel: Absolutely. But we’re not in any hurry to do it just to do it. We’ll do it when the story calls for it.

Q: Some questions regarding Garm; how did he and Eir meet, and where specifically? And assuming dire wolves are by now extinct in Tyria (as well) with the only live specimen being him, what happened to the pack he was born into? Lastly, what happened between them that makes him follow Eir as his ‘alpha’?

Angel: That’s a big story. I’ll put it into my list of possible ideas to tackle in a blog post.

Q: Lorewise, how close is the bond between a Player and their npc Companions (Ranger Pet, Necromancer Minions, Thieves Guild, etc.)?

Angel: That depends on the character. Everyone is an individual, and it would do no good to generalize something like this. Each player can choose to roleplay their relationships as they wish.

Q: What exactly was it that caused Sayeh al’Rajihd and Trahearne to join forces the first time they met?

Angel: We’re keeping this story in our pocket for potential future release.

Q: How come Queen Jennah is so trusting towards Lion’s Arch? It is a melting pot lair of pirates ruled by the fiercest of them all, when she, on the other side, lead a battle against Kryta’s bandits who are not so different?

Angel: Lion’s Arch has been an established trade ally for a long time. She may not trust individuals from LA, but the city as a whole is very unlikely to attack Divinity’s Reach. Kryta’s bandits, on the other hand, are in the streets of DR and have damaged the DR economy as well as assaulting citizens. They are an immediate threat to DR.

Q: Which characters and their relationships inspired the developers the most?

Scott: Every developer and designer has a different answer, but (tongue firmly in cheek here), if we had to pick one answer, it would be Hobo-Tron and Minstrel Marcello.

Bobby: Lord Faren and himself.

They’re the DR water system, called Grenth’s Spoke

The Greater Good of human street rat storyline takes place there, where you have to stop bandits from poisoning the water system.

Scarlet may try to Sabotage her own plan

in Lore

Posted by: Konig Des Todes.2086

Konig Des Todes.2086

First, the attack on Divinity’s Reach had always felt like it was done by Scarlet on a whim, even the investigation instance kind of gave the same impression.

Because it was, stated sadly only in an interview after Clockwork Chaos on Scarlet between Scott/Angel and TowerTalk. A link to said interview is on Scarlet’s GW2W article, at the bottom.

Second, notice how we have not seen any of the Twisted clockwork minions in either trailer video or the released screen shots of attack on Lions’ Arch.

Doesn’t say much, TBH. We only saw, what, four short scenes of Scarlet’s minions? Two of which were Aetherblade.

Wait til the update comes. You may get debunked in this alone right off the bat.

For example, the twisted and crazy mob design, I mean really, can you imagine a rational/powerful mind to come up with something as crazy as the Marionette.

Actually, yes. The Twisted Nightmare is literally a Watchknight placed on top of another – it has 8 limbs, each limb being two normal Watchknight limbs on top of each other (sans hand/feet), and the torso is two Watchknight bodies stacked together (where one’s head should be, the other’s butt is). Twisted Horrors are like a mix of hylek and dog. Twisted Menders are literally mosquitoes. And Reavers are Wind Riders full out.

They’re all rather rational.

Remember that part of Scarlet is struggling against the entity. Remember that her own initial motivation was to actually confront the entity not to become its slave. If that part is still alive and is represented in the Twisted clockwork then she might use them to sabotage the Entity’s plan.

Presuming, in the first place, that it has a plan. Maybe it just seeks chaos? Maybe it’s just toying with Scarlet’s mind – and her thoughts truly are her own, but it’s just going “nah, I thought of that first and told you!” repeatedly.

Notice also how the Marionette is hanging from chains like a puppet.

Oh my… She, herself, is a puppet – you, sir, are a genius.

You realize that was one of the first things mentioned about the Marionette? That it could be a reflection of her being a puppet in the end as well.

I wonder if a Konig summoning spell would shed some light on this…

You are not of the Archivists. My pact is not with you! All who breach the pact must be purged.

Even considering
Caithe says: I “dream” of you
Zojja says: I’d be a “bookah” not to love you http://guildwars.wikia.com/wiki/Bookah
Ritlock says: be in my “warband”

They are all relevant to the character or at least the race.

“I’m under your spell” just seems so suspicious and I don’t see how it is relevant to humans in GW2 so it must be relevant to Logan himself. I have never heard a character in game use a phrase like that before.

As far as the Nightmare Court go, the explanation the NPCs have put forward is “Scarlet gave them a chance to spread suffering”. The least satisfying of the lot, really, especially seeing as their the only group to actually clear space in one of their bases so she could build a bloody factory, but I don’t expect we’ll see anything better forthcoming.

  • With the Flame Legion and dredge, she went to each faction saying she got the other working with her already and offered said others’ technology/magic – Flame Legion wanted technology to gain an upper hand, and the dredge wanted flame magic for the same reason. Scarlet went to them saying “hey, I got what you want via this group, come join me” to both groups.
  • Inquest she worked with, so I presume she used her old contacts being a “special consultant” – no real explanation given that I’ve seen though.
  • With the pirates, all we really get is “work for me or I’ll kill you” and promises of looting.
  • Watchknights she hijacked – she was capable of doing such because they’re based off of Steam creature technology and she is somehow related to them (be it reverse engineering or actually tied to them somehow).
  • The Nightmare Court is never explained, as far as I know. We know she worked out some sort of deal to get access to Twilight Arbor – said deal later turning out to be the Toxic Alliance, I believe.
  • The krait she seemingly threatened using the obelisk shards – “work for me, you get these; don’t work for me, you’ll never get them”. Hard to believe, but if they care enough for the sacredness of the shards it can work.

How does she retain their affiliation? Good question. But overall, as Aaron said, she somehow tricked them into believing that they gain from working for her.

Actually during the Marionette we did have all of them attacking – like yes they were in waves, but they were still all in the same place for the same thing.

I imagine we’ll see the alliances continue after she’s gone. It would be odd for the writers to do all the set up and then not really go any further with it.

Zhaitan is small??

in Lore

Posted by: Vyko.6953

Vyko.6953

Zhaitan is very, very huge. I ripped dragon models (with textures) from gw2.dat and animated them in Cinema 4D; that picture of Tequatl’s and Zhaitan’s size on wiki is my render. If you guys want more renders of Zhaitan in comparison with other dragons (or with an airship we are fighting on with Zhaitan), you can tell me.

That model is really beautiful. Its really a pity that we cant see Zhaitan very well in the game. After his death, they could make an instance where we can walk on him or something like that, that would be wonderful

BTW: the model’s wingspan on wiki render is 446 metres. In comparison, model of human from game data is 190cm tall, The Bifrost is 205 cm tall and an asura is 124 cm tall (4 ft.) (from wiki: “an asura is usually about four feet tall”), so it sounds like its a real size.

Comparison images would obviously be great, but I’m wondering..

I’m an illustrator and I’ve been trying to draw Zhaitan for quite a long while, and I’m having problems with some areas of him I just cannot find good reference images of. If you were to post closeup images of his right and left hands, as well as that weird area where his lower jaw should be and how that works, I would be eternally grateful. It’s just not easy to tell how his hands exactly look, and the in-game model has a blinding light coming out of his mouth that obscures everything.

I’m also a bit curious – is Zhaitan’s original model still floating around in the games data files anywhere, or did they yank it out entirely? Hmm. I assume (perhaps incorrectly) that it was in at some point due to it being visible on some old maps.

Oh, by the way, someone yanked Drakkar out of Guild Wars 1. Scroll down a bit.
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/drakkar-lake-ice-creature-screens-t10201206p8.html
He mentions further down how he got it out of the game.

I can render these parts and send it to you, no problem the only bad thing is, I couldnt find textures of “snakes” coming from his mouth, so I can render you them only in grey colour.

Thanks for searching for it. Yeah, I found that too, I writed that guy and he told me how to rip it. However, that program is very unreliable…it rips everything around you and saves it, but its drastically deformated, you cant get the right measure, so I gived up with that.

Here are Zhaitans comparisons with other dragons and Glory of Tyria. Luckily, I found Shadow of the Dragon model, but havent rigged it (that takes a little bit long time), so the wings arent standing up like at other dragons. Unfortunately, I still havent found Pact normal airship model:/. However, I found something very special and interesting, and here is the render of it as a bonus! anyone recognize this creature? (3rd picture) Hint: it can be seen in one of trailers

So what's Scarlet breaching, exactly?

in Lore

Posted by: zamalek.2154

zamalek.2154

What convenient placement. Thaumanova Mk. II here we go.

So I would assume that the drill bit is somewhat like a battery terminal. Conclusions:

  • The sounds coming from under LA were the ley lines all along. Unless there is also an ED at the intersection (some interpretations of the thumper maps had the EDs at the tips of the ley lines, so if you agree with those maps this scenario is unlikely).
  • If she is indeed after an ED she is probably leveling up her airship by siphoning off magic out of the ley line intersection (or at least, she plans to).
  • I even further doubt that LA is the final target.
  • I wonder what that Skritt who enjoyed rummaging around in the sewers has to say.

-Water level is lowering (noticable mostly around Grand Piazza and Farshore Ward)

This indicates that there must be a massive volume of air under LA; because aren’t the harbors connected directly to the sea? In order for the water level to be lower [locally] the rate of flow into the caverns must be immense – unless Scarlet blocked off the harbor somehow so that she could physically access the caverns. Will the new LA be partially built in these caverns? Is the new map we have been asking for going to be below LA? Are these caverns possible one way to access a specific ED? Primordius seems logical, Mordremoth is very plausible.

It really sucks to be missing out on this stuff and it makes me feel like I made the wrong choice.

I would suspect the other orders have their own NPCs that either explain the same thing, or, further flesh out the information – we just haven’t found them yet.

Anyone else find it poetic that we have come round in a complete circle? The LS started with us freeing refugees, and we are now doing it again.

The “breach” that she’s “making” is the one the drill forms when going into the ground. Y’know, breaching the soil and all.

Or to quote your earlier statement: Scarlet is trying to drown Primordus and make him the ‘Elder Smoldering Dragon’ :P

Like the title says, this is just an artless info dump for what’s going on with our new allies, since most people will miss the dialogue- you have to jump off the zerg train early to catch it. Feel free to discuss any or all of the following.

-Taimi: Running around at Vigil’s Keep frantically asking if anyone has seen Scarlet. Feels like this might be her last chance to observe her in action. Interestingly, now claims only to want to observe her, and not to meet or talk to her, but gives no indication of what changed her mind. Haven’t hung around long enough yet to see if she has other dialogue.

-Kasmeer and Marjory: Turns out Kasmeer’s hiccups are just something that happens when she’s scared, and not sinister hinting at the scratch she got in the Tower of Nightmares. Ah well. Getting panicky, but has a touching bit with Marjory where she says that the reason she’s able to handle what’s going on is that meeting Marjory made her want to be a better person. More backstory on Marjory- she joined the Ministry Guard ASAP to get away from home, since her father “isn’t a nice man like [Kasmeer’s]”. Still keeps in touch with her mother and sisters. Joined the Durmand Priory right after quiting the guard in order to build an information network to support her new profession. Opted not to go with the Order of Whispers because “those rats” are “too secretive, even amongst themselves.” Both Kasmeer and Marjory feel like they’re losing the fight, but want to keep at it as long as there’s anyone left to save. Much more openly affectionate in their dialogue, definitely feel like an established couple now.

-Rox and Braham: Nothing really new, just old friends shooting the breeze. Rox is still twitchy around the explosions. Rox needles Braham about Ophelia when he makes a comment about Marjory and Kasmeer being “too busy making lovey eyes at each other.” Both want to jump back into the fray. No mention of Taimi between them.

-Coriolis Plaza is fortified (by Scarlets minions)
-Water level is lowering (noticable mostly around Grand Piazza and Farshore Ward)
-Canach escapes with Magnus and Kiel at the very last moment
-Magnus lost his left eye? (Molten Berserker event)
-Asura Gate to Rata Sum still active (Not for players to go through though)
-Minions summon Mini Probes Actually miasma containers
-MA machines pointing towards the Breachmaker and one that is pointing towards the sky (Sonic Periscopes AKA listening devices)
-The Molten Alliance machines are all around the Breachmaker, but mostly only the ones pointing towards the sky. The other sonic devices are only found at the Gunnery Range.
-Tengu shoot everyone who comes near their wall
-Lion’s Shadow Inn changed from Waypoint -> PoI
-New ‘caves’ opened up
-Ela Makkay confirms an intersection of ley lines underneath Lion’s Arch
- Ho-Ho-tron, now Heal-a- tron, is being hunted by the Seraph. He approaches Evon Gnashblade about some type of combat upgrade, but the upgrade sound purely defensive in nature.
- Evon has gotten conscripted into the Lionguard as a quartermaster thanks to Ellen Keil. He’s not to happy about it.
- One of said caves has a layer of water in them, perhaps related to the lowered water level caused by the drill.

I’m just not seeing a footstep in some of these images and the red lines you draw are going to have a biasing effect on any interpretation of the images. Be careful of Pareidolia.

I would think if these were footsteps of something large enough to make them it would have been in the cutscene or had some mention of it by NPCs. A Molten Berserker, one of Scarlet’s Steam Creatures, Flame Legion Effigy, Dredge carrier, explosions from the airship cannons or giant lasers from the sky could damage the terrain in such a way. I suspect it’s some combination of the last two.
