What went wrong with gw2 pvp?

Three problems.

1. Tools missing.
One of veewee’s posts lately said that the game still doesn’t have a pause feature. It still doesn’t have that. It’s kinda sucky. ESPAWTS umpires need tools, and arenas need those tools to sometimes happen automatically.

2. Infrequent balance.
Big blobs of balance changes every 6 months is not good enough. A high tempo of shaves fortnightly or monthly keeps the meta from getting stale.

3. Infrequent expansions.
The game has not had a team queue suitable map added since 2012. Twenty. Kittening. Twelve.
Since release, there has been the addition of one healing skill and five traits for each class. Otherwise, only one ability has been added, which is Tainted Shackles. In the meantime, compare it to Big Fatty WoW; a game with an incredibly slow patch cycle is now working up to releasing a new expac.

Hello frands! Vee Wee here, #1 Engi NA and world first rank 80!

Vee Wee has a few theories! In terms of esportz, nobody wants to play conquest! Conquest is not esportz! Arenas are esportz! It’s a shame Anet spent 2 years balancing the game for conquest! Guaranteed the next game mode that comes out will not be so great because of balance! We’ll have to wait a long time before it will be playable! Mark Vee Wee’s words!

Anet is too slow to balance! 1 patch every half year! That’s just thuper insane in the membrane! Anet wants to make everything perfect! Well newflash frands! You can’t balance perfectly! It can only be good! And everything good can then be made better! And then you keep making it better! Biweekly! Even monthly! Hell at this point Vee Wee will even take a patch every 2 months! But twice per year! Bad! So bad! So very bad! Warriors have been op now for over a year! Why do we have to wait over a year for things to change!

No pause feature! A few weeks ago Vee Wee was watching a tournament on Blu’s stream! Someone on the blue team disconnected! The casters told someone on the red team to afk in spawn! That was the saddest most ghettoest thing Vee Wee has ever seen in a video game! Especially one that tries so hard to be esportz!

Camera angles! I have no idea what’s going on when watching a stream! In game camera angles are just as bad! Why isn’t there any 1st person camera like there is in Guild Warts 1!

That’s just for esportz! There are other problems plaguing general PvP! Skyhammer, lack of team communication, etcetcetc. Vee Wee made a thread about it already and does not want to type everything out again!

Wahoo! Bye frands!

Anet: Why no monks?

Hello frands! Vee Wee here, #1 Engi NA and world first rank 80!

Many months ago Vee Wee had a drunken rant with someone, Vee Wee can’t remember who, on the lack of Monks and Dervishes! Vee Wee had some ideas on how to implement Monks and Dervishes into the game!

First the new Monk class would only be allowed to equip one weapon similar to Elementalists and Engineers! But they could weapon swap! Weapon swapping swaps the Monk’s stances or power or whatever for that weapon! One stance is a physical Monk with melee and other physical damage! When you weapon swap, you go into a magical stance with new weapon skills that do offensive or supporty Monkish magic attacks! So for example a Monk equips a staff! That’s the only weapon he can equip! He has a bunch of physical melee staff attacks! He presses the weapon swap key and is still using a staff! But now he has offensive and support magical attacks! Yippee!

Monks are a light armor class! Monks will be able to use a staff in melee! Monks will be able to use magical ranged Maces! Anet could also introduce fist weapons! Guardians, Thieves and maybe Elementalists could also use these weapons! Maybe Anet could introduce spears that you can use on land! Monks could use these too! Also Warriors and Rangers!

Also bring back Ray of Judgement! That was Vee Wee’s favorite ability in Guild Warts 1! And now it’s reduced to an unimpressive, barely noticeable little beam on the Guardian’s focus! Rename Focus 4 and bring back old school Ray of Judgement!

Wahoo! Bye frands!

Anet: Why no monks?

Judging by the lack of new game mode I am lead to believe that you are stuck. Like.

You’ve run out of ideas for game modes nothing will work.

The only thing I have seen suggested is Capture the Flag which will also be boring and gimmicky and suck.

Conquest is fun and all but what happened to GvG from GW1? And what happened to competition in Heroes’ Ascent.

A new big mode is clearly needed. Do you expect us to be playing conquest our whole competitive life. Only reason I remain faithful to GW2 these days is ‘cos there ain’t nothing else there to play.

I think you are stuck in the mud here Anet.

And the best possible solution you have is conquest which let’s face has bored many of us on occasion. But we are loyal enough to come back and compete.

So.

Why not bring back Monks just like in a Guild Wars 1 type of way with the introduction of Paragons, Dervish, Ritualist, Assasins at later stages in the game which went down rather easily and made the game more expanse.

You could get around having no aggro bubble, with ranged skills. Almost anything with code, you could code it.

With Monk support at the battlefield we will be able to have team deathmatch and epic duels, in GvG arenas and Heroes’ Ascent and bring back all the playboy titles that go along with it to make it super competitive and fun.

Monks are able to watch the arena quite well with this new system you have and it will bring protting and healing a new sense of depth.

You are stuck for game modes otherwise!

MonMalthias.4763

Hello frands! Vee Wee here, #1 Engi NA and world first rank 80!

Yes Vee Wee knows all these suggestions have been mentioned before many times! But repetition is the mother of all learning! Vee Wee just hoped maybe a dev would come in and say these things are being worked on! Vee Wee just hoped a dev would come in and say, “Hello my frand Vee Wee! Don’t you worry your pretty little face you thilly bear! We are actively working to make our game better! And we are doing it in a reasonable amount of time! And we are taking your suggestions to heart! And we are going to buff Engineers to be thuper OP and we are going to give them a turret or gadget that works exactly like Flesh Wurm!” Gosh Vee Wee can only dream!

Wahoo! Bye frands!

Flesh Wurm for Engineer aside, what really needs to change is putting the word “Soon!”™ into the dumpster. At this point, there have been more than enough missed windows for action and indeed, Anet has demonstrably delayed action many times, such as with-holding the Sigil of Paralyzation bugfix, and in more recent memory the Ranger Spirit of Nature bugfix to be folded into feature packs even as they announce changes weeks, sometimes months ahead of implementation.

I don’t know who does PR for Arenanet but there is clearly something silly in promising something, stating that it is fixed and then dithering on delivering it even as there are demonstrable negative consequences for ongoing balance. The upcoming PVP Feature Pack for September finally delivers on the Asura issue, which is great. The only problem is that we’ve had more than 2 official publicly broadcasted tournaments where this was clearly being abused by practically every team, and more than that besides – all the while players were making mention of it since late 2012. There is a clear and growing disconnect between promise and delivery and I can only attribute it to Living Story’s voracious demand for resources preventing Anet from properly iterating on game systems.

Back in February when I made the Balance, Iteration, Wrongdoing thread, which Allie Murdock responded to, I was hopeful that the feedback would percolate and that more frequent changes in terms of balance and systems iteration – no matter how small – would occur.

But now that Karl McLain’s great Tooltip Fix project is over, there is yet another feature freeze; and the clearly OP setups that were predicted in early April when the Previews were coming out are now dominant like Celestial/Strength Rune/Might stacking in general. There was a 2% damage nerf and the heart of the problem – the fact that 45% Might duration is possible – was never addressed. Air/Fire was predicted and not addressed. Anet needs to recognise that 1 tweak per 6 months is not going to be enough and it never will be. Yes, one could argue that the game is more balanced than it ever has been, and it is true to a degree. But to then take that as a sign to rest on one’s laurels and allow “perfect” to become the enemy of “good enough” whilst running QA on minor changes for 5 months will never get the game to reach its peak potential unless Anet follows the footsteps of LoL, Smite and DotA and tweak and tweak and tweak again, farming out those man-hours of QA to the community itself and iterating off of mistakes using a PTR. Since neither case is happening, we get threads like this where the same things are rolled out time and time again.

Vee Wee's PvP Suggestions!

in PvP

Posted by: ArrDee.2573

ArrDee.2573

Hello frands! Vee Wee here, #1 Engi NA and world first rank 80!

Vee Wee has made many PvP suggestions! Even though Vee Wee is a Guild Warts 2 critic, it’s always to help better the game! Vee Wee just wants Guild Warts 2 to be the best game it can be! Vee Wee is frandly like that! Here is a compilation of suggestions made by Vee Wee!

Test servers!
Test things before they go live! Balance changes! New maps! Vee Wee knows that obviously Arenanet tests new changes! But it’s too small scale! Invite people to sign up for your test servers! Invite top PvPers to test balance changes! Many of them just want to see the game get better and can offer useful input! You guys said that you want 2 weeks to collect feedback from the Ready Up videos! We can give you all the feedback you want on what it looks like! But if we can’t play it, all our feedback is essentially worthless! Something might look overpowered but it really isn’t! A change might look minor, but could have a big impact in an actual game!

A perfect example of this is Skyhammer! Internally you guys said it was great! Turns out it’s the most despised map in the short history of Guild Warts 2 maps! Speaking of Skyhammer…

Skyhammer!
We’ve all seen this before my frands! Skyhammer needs to change! It doesn’t necessarily have to go, but goshdarn it my frands it needs to change! And Arenanet taking your time to find the perfect solution is not helping! Make a change! If it doesn’t work out, make another change! Just do something! Not changing things means things don’t get changed! It’s so simple!

Split PvP/PvE/WvW skills!
You cannot balance for all 3 game modes! They are completely different and often use different abilities! Buffing something minor in PvP could have dire consequences in the other game modes! Please don’t say that this will confuse the players! We are not morans! We can figure it out! If you were so scared of confusing players, why did you even release the game! Vee Wee was confused as heck when the game first came out! But Vee Wee learned! And now Vee Wee is the #1 Engi NA and world first rank 80!

More communication in game!
The key to victory in any game mode is communication! If an enemy Thief is going to backcap our home point, I am not going to type it out while being trained by an enemy Necromancer! Take a look at this feature that Dota 2 has! It’s simple and quick and can be extremely useful! http://dota2.gamepedia.com/Chat_Wheel Vee Wee thinks this could be an excellent addition to Guild Warts 2 and not just PvP! PvE and WvW too!

Vee Wee thinks it would also be cool if you could combine some chat and skills! For example if Vee Wee is playing a Thief and Vee Wee’s teammate is down, Vee Wee could use Shadow Refuge and say in team chat at the same time, “Hey frand! I’m using Shadow Refuge! Don’t use any skills you thilly goothe!” Or maybe if Vee Wee is playing a Warrior and has Balanced Stance up, Vee Wee could stomp and at the same time in chat say, “Hey frands! I’m stab stomping!” Who here has been in a situation where multiple people started stomping with no one cleaving, and the bad guy ended up getting revived! Vee Wee has! Communication my frands!

Passive Skills
Vee Wee thinks passive skills like Shared Anguish, Incendiary Powder, Reaper’s Protection, Mirror of Anguish, etc should have a tell! Maybe an icon near your boons similar to the icon that Sigil of Doom grants you! Maybe classes could have an aura to show that these strong passive skills are off cooldown! Incendiary Powder could make an Engineer’s hands glow all fiery! Reaper’s Protection could surround the Necromancer with black smoke! This will help you keep track of your cooldowns, as well as let the enemy know so he can maybe counter these things! Too much randomness is not fun my frands! Wahoo!

Leavers!
Everybody knows 4v5s are not fun! Well there isn’t much you can do to stop a leaver! But you can make sure other people aren’t penalized for leaving! Vee Wee has an idea to combat leavers! First penalize all leavers with dishonored even if it was the first game they left! A first time offense can only be 5 minutes! But every subsequent time will add time to dishonored! Second set up leavers into 2 categories! We can call them early and late! If the game is a 4v5 or less within the first 3 minutes, then everybody is free to leave and join another game as soon as they leave with no effect on rank or leaderboard or whatever! After 3 minutes, you are free to leave and play another game but the outcome of the match will affect your rank and leaderboard status and whatever!

AFK Check
Queue times often go above 10 minutes! Have a ready up button before everybody gets ported into the match to prevent AFKs! If 10 people do not ready up in a set amount of time then everyone goes back into queue! So simple!

Standard Models and You

Dear Devs who read posts.

Standard Models. They’re happening, and that’s cool. But as they are now happening, realistically we will need to re-roll humans because at this ‘top level’ you are alluding to, how we present our own animations matter (precast/after cast/terrain etc).

So being such a forum hero, wanted to #first asking for an option to enable standard models on allies too. Players that like to hide animations, use verticality/terrain will benefit from such transparency in what their opponents see, and I guess now’s the time to ask for it.

Thx

Simple thing really, when you queue for a hotjoin map from the open world map, when you leave the match you return to where you were in the open world. why can this not be the same for arenas. I would like to be able to pve while I wait in my queue and go right back to what I was doing after the match while I wait for the next queue.

[Suggestion] Distraction Free Mode

in PvP

Posted by: Ignavia.7420

Ignavia.7420

First of, this is not my own idea, I saw it first here. But I feel it well deserves its own thread.

Currently there is lots of distraction in PvP, like flashy weapon and armor skins, lots of particle effects and people playing the smallest Asura possible. All this is taking away your attention while it is neither part of the actual battle nor requiring any skill on your opponent’s part.

So a simple solution would be to a “Distraction Free Mode”. There should be an option (no forcing) that provides

  • Two standardized character models, one male, one female (the same for all races)
  • One standardized weapon per type
  • A standardized light/medium/heavy armor (maybe with the class icon on back and front of the chestpiece and dyed in the color of the team)
  • Less particle clutter

Since there are already tonics in the game, it also fits thematically. I personally think it should be an option only for PvP, WvW was never meant to be an equal ground. But the particle effect reduction would still be nice to have there.

Discussion is very welcome.

This is a mess

in PvP

Posted by: IcyTotem.3491

IcyTotem.3491

Hi, I played a bit of pvp when GW2 came out. It was weird… but I managed to accomplish something. Now I just come back after years of absence and if I thougth pvp was a messy sprout then, I think it is even more of a mess now. I am talking about hot-joins.

I mean, for an approaching player, understanding what’s going on is really hard. Everything is so quick and ferentic, and I just find myself immersed in a flash of lights and effects, then I am stunned for 3 SECONDS, then knocked back, thrown back and forth like a doll, then I die. Just to respawn and get my hp halved (literally) in a single blow, even if I build full toughness and vitality on a mesmer.
And there are so many characters on the screen, they move so quickly I cannot even select an enemy, let alone tab targeting.

I play a tanky mesmer and I do no damage, which I can accept, but I also don’t survive any longer than a squishy thief. My life goes down in halves or thirds… My clones and illusions are useless since everyone knows which is the real me. If I stay still, I die, if I move I die. If I turn invisibile damage breaks off my invisibility; if I use another invisibility spell right after, it doesn’t work.

Really, everything is just fo frustrating and overwhelimg I completely lose the will to go on and try harder. So, some suggestion:

  • I know everyone is lv80 in the Mists, but this means nothing. Everyone has different account-wide achievements, pvp rank, matches played, etc… I cannot believe that a fair matchmaking is in place when my kitteny character gets paired up against fully uber-equipped players (I know that stats are equalized, but the more awesome the look, the more time spent gaining it, so more experience involved). Just implement a fair matchmaking system.
  • In all matches I start on the smaller team. Literally every match. Either 1v2, 2v3 and so on. Can’t we just wait for a full team to be assembled before starting. And come on, starting with only 1 player in a team? Ridiculous.
  • I can set up all the filters I want and kitten but… no filter ever displays results. If I want arenas with at least 5 starting players, nothing; or with no autobalance; nothing; or just with my favourite maps; nothing. Is it even working?
  • Add the option to make nameplates bigger (without increasing all the UI scale) and to hide minions’ ones (at least for trivially obvious minions). And the possibility to move the enemy target frame: it’s overly onconfortable on the top of the screen and decisively out of reach of my attention during a gameplay so frenetic.
  • Add post-death details on what skills killed you, so that I can start to pick up the pieces and look for the reasons of my defeat. I can die a thousand times but not knowing what killed me wouldn’t make a difference. Also I’ve been told that sometimes heavy-hitting abilities don’t figure in the combat log: just losing 10k hp instantly without knowing why.

Good show. It was nice to hear their thoughts on the issues raised. Hopefully ArenaNet was listening and uses the feedback to fill the glass up.

I caught the latter half of yesterday’s show while it was still live and went back and rewatched it from the beginning afterwards. Overall, I really enjoyed the show, and it really took me back to my pre-ArenaNet days. It’s crazy to think it’s been over a year since the last SotG, and I’m happy to see that DPS has picked up the mantle. I think this style of show is a great way for players to express their thoughts in an easily digestible format, and it provides considerable insight on player perspective for our dev team.

These shows are also a great way to disseminate knowledge from high-tier players. Meta formation is usually a trickle-down effect, with the top-players developing new team compositions and strategy. Quick communication of meta shifts can change the gameplay experience across the skill spectrum. On this note, and very closely related to what my role is at ArenaNet – I think providing more incentive for players to take competition seriously will help teams venture out of their comfort zones – forcing them to try something new and unexpected to one-up their competition. We’re already seeing this in NA/EU as teams shy away from the traditional bunker linchpins and move towards skirmish/rotation-focused team comps.

Regarding events (my area of expertise), I think there were a lot of great points presented by the players. I work very closely with Mistpedia, DPS, ESL, etc – and we try to cater our events to what works best for both the administrators and organizers, as well as the players participating in the event. I think what makes ToL a great event for us to start with is the fact that it touches players from a wide range of skill levels – you don’t need to be able to beat APeX or Team Mist to feel rewarded for your time. That said, I’m always working to improve our existing tournament structures within the confines of what’s reasonable. I’ll be working to address some of the points raised by the players.

Going forward, one of my main priorities is going to be providing a more competitive outlet for our most dedicated and hardcore players. Exclusive and compelling rewards for our most skilled players is our first step towards that goal. Events like the All-Stars tournament is a great added bonus.

One final note – while I’m greatly appreciative of the love from my fellow friends and players give me (I knew most of you before I came to ArenaNet), I’d like to remind you that everything we work on is absolutely a team effort. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not just Karl, Evan and I sitting in a corner working on PvP or balance. Every project at ArenaNet involves programmers, directors, designers, artists, producers, QA, and even backseat designers like me! Our team is comprised of incredibly talented individuals, all dedicated to improving PvP in every conceivable way. We’re just as eager to get there as you guys are.

ps, I forwarded the VOD out to the team in case anyone didn’t catch it yesterday.

Spectate Mode should be removed from Hot-join

in PvP

Posted by: Dave.2536

Dave.2536

What you described above is a system that makes it much more difficult to cheat by stacking high rank players at the start of a game. That’s good, it should be difficult to cheat, now it is virtually a feature of the game. You have said yourself that you do it because everyone else does.

Also you ignore that autobalance cannot be forced easily after the game starts if players are prevented from going freely from playing-spectate/team-swap-playing. I am sure some scrubs will try to do what you suggested above, but its a lot of effort to go through just to win a hotjoin.

I can tell from your posts that you won’t be one of those scrubs.

This match fixing looks new to you because it took time to discover it and have the idea get spread. I don’t know exactly when it took off, but it almost certainly started because of the disparity between the winners’ and losers’ rewards. I still don’t feel hotjoin is competitive enough to justify a gap similar to what is found in arenas.

The above is done even now quite often when there is a lopsided match or outlier rank (extremely low or extremely high on a relative scale) in the game. Some of them don’t realize they can spectate-autobalance and others feel it is too toxic. It feels like there should be a significant difference between those who leave a game because it is way imbalanced and those who leave a game to try to farm a way elsewhere. In reality it’s nearly impossible to distinguish that motive.

I often end up being a player people stack on (I usually try to pick a side early to break the ice and get things started), and I do tPvP when friends are online. As a result of this I am personally not worried about hotjoin rank rewards and usually manipulate matches not to get wins but to make sure others blatantly stacking don’t get their wins very easily. Just as you are troubled by people abusing the system for wins, I am troubled that one of the few ways for me to help even the odds is to AFK (with the orb on Spirit Watch for even more effect) or spam suicide (Skyhammer).

To me, the autobalance system is evidence that there is a social contract here: ANet keep the matches balanced so the players play fairly in the spirit of the game. The severe imbalance in hotjoin indicates ANet is not effectively fulfilling their end of the contract, and the match abuse is the players’ response.

Maybe if you really want to keep hotjoin fun and casual, something drastic has to be done: perhaps 200 rank point participation reward with a 300 point bonus for winning obtainable only 5 times a day (enough for most casual players). As that win bonus is capped there will no longer be the rush to abuse matches to get it as it will just quickly cap itself naturally.

Content in this game will always seem
to be faceroll at the high levels, because it
needs to be accessible to the casuals and bads.

The game will never be an e-sport because it lacks depth at a fundamental game play level. Combat is too simple and has a certain twitch element to it(GW1 and MOBA players alike prefer more cerebral combat). Dodging and evasion has a nice feel but it prevents players from being methodical about skill choice and usage. In many cases you can avoid attacks without even being aware of them.

Conquest wasn’t the best choice as a general sPvP mode but it’s not terrible and could benefit from a few tweaks(i.e. multiple players affecting point captures). I think they chose it because of the popularity of alliance battles in the previous installment and because they feel movement is of vital importance to this game.

I think they’re aware that sPvP lacks variety and are working on bringing something new to the table soon. The courtyard map, however awful, is an indication of that.

Just my two cents.

Is sPvP ever going to be more than Conquest?

I truely do not like Conquest, never have, never will. I liked old GW1 RA/TA where it was just smash face, last team standing.

I also liked GW1s GvG and Tombs. Having Guild Wars in that Guild Wars game – revolutionary.

Hey dude you are walking into a wall.

Illusionary Leap

I will go on record as saying that the recent change to Illusionary Leap may have been the most ill-advised in the game’s history. Who in their right mind took an appraisal of the game as it stands right now and decided this skill needed added punishment?

The ability — leaving aside its tremendous pathing and consistency issues — is now badly out of sync with comparable skills. Infilitrator’s Strike (Thief) and Flashing Blade (Guardian) are both instant-cast, can be used well out of range to act as a medium displacement and neither of these has a glaring telegraph like a marathon-sprinting bright red clone screaming “DODGE NOW”. I understand the clone can be seen as a positive in the resource sense (on some setups) but Illusionary Leap even has a blinking UI warning as a second telegraph!

Here are some of the ways you can currently counter this skill:

- Dodge the clone
- Evade the clone
- Walk away from the clone (can be outpaced with swiftness etc.)
- Evade the swap
- Displace yourself (Blink, Shadowstep, Phase Retreat, Acid Bomb, Lightning Flash)
- Invuln/pseudo-invuln (Ranger/Warrior blocks, Shelter)
- Dodge during the swap (you will still displace yourself during the immobilize)
- Destroy the clone
- CC the clone (fear, chill, cripple etc.)
- Stealth (clone won’t follow laterally)
- Kite outside of range
- Cleanse the cripple and move
- Cleanse the immobilize
- Abuse the z-axis (pathing issues, does not act as a port without a successful swap)

I urge the devs to please revert this change back if nothing else. Players could still destroy the clone beforehand, the Mesmer just had a port to where the clone would’ve been at the time of destruction as compensate. This recent change has borderline spelled doom for the sword anywhere beyond beginner-level play.

This has probably been asked 100 times, but why no GvG yet ANet?

I even heard at some point that an ANet employee found 2 guilds doing GvG in the Obsidian Sanctum and told them to stop.

What’s up? It’s called GW for a reason no? :s I am very sad
