Axe is one of the perfect example of the necromancer’s design :
a) Good and even borderline overpowered in theory :
- AA and burst skill pass through all projectile hate.
- Utility unholy feast is an aoe cripple, damage, retaliation provider and boon corruptor skill which is totally awesome on the paper
b) Perform poorly in reality :
- The consecutive low damage on AA, with a probably terribly bad coefficient make it unimpressive and boring. With what i’ve seen oover these 4 and half year I don’t think the axe AA even come close to, say, even the ranger’s lonbow AA which is imped by the fact that they have a pet as damage support.
- No combo projectile. Yes, it’s an important loss in DPS as well as utility. The axe trade damage and combo for being able to pass through projectile hate. (I feel it’s a big high of cost)
- Unholy feast is not worse the theoretical value. The main reason being that retaliation underperform in everypart of the game. Well… that is a bit of an overstatement, I agree that retaliation on the karka defender perform well, but it does twice the damage of what a player can do.
As for the staff… :
- AA : slow projectile, pitiable damages
- mark are only good to tag pack of monsters or to generate some LF thanks to a trait. Reaper’s mark is somewhat usefull when used properly.
Im still hoping for aftercast reduction on gravedigger. And if not then at least a damage buff.
(edited by spoj.9672)
Well, Reaper IS stronger but just because Necromancers sucks.
Do not worry. Anet will get around to nerfing it soon enough.
There is also a thing called “Opportunity Cost”.
True, one does not need to spend 3,000 gold buying materials from the trading post to ‘craft’ it if they acquire all of the needed items manually.
However, all of those manually acquired materials are still worth the equivalent to 3,000 gold if they were to be sold. So, in essence, the ‘crafter’ is still spending 3,000 gold to ‘craft’ the item by exchanging these manually acquired items that are worth 3,000 gold for the Night Fury item.
Then there is also value of the time needed to manually acquire all of these items worth 3,000 gold which is more ambiguously valued.

it’s alright i guess. i started playing this profession as it was advertised to be able to rival the lich king in power, instead i’m struggling to keep up with count chocula.

Although necro was nerfed directly and indirectly in the conditions department, retiring my terror build, I’ve switched to power build and will wait a couple more months. If they don’t balance the class correctly by then I’ll Delete my necro and uninstall GW2 and move on to something better.
I’ve decided to compile all the Dev Posts, in reverse chronological order, that reference Necromancer. I will try to keep this thread updated. If you find a post that I missed please post it here (and if possible where it should be in the list).

Suggestion for Necromancers Lack of Block/Vigor/Evade/Invulnerable
(edited by Myrkr.5803)
• Curses IV—Enfeeble: Decreased the weakness duration to 2 seconds. Decreased the bleeding to 1 stack and 6 seconds. Removed the cooldown.
This is insulting… i feel insulted by this, 2 seconds is something trolls / noobs that you own in PvP would say while raging. I can’t believe this is real… maybe it should have been 1 second… to make sure no one will ever take that trait again…
PS: they gave us damage, when we asked for attrition and survivability vs focus fire… and now… now they nerfed our damage so many times, that we actually have less damage then before “the buffs”… especially if you chose not to use Dhuumfire…
Killed all build diversity… killed the class…

Waiting for dev answer
Didn’t notice that it was player only, otherwise that whole second bit wouldn’t have been necessary. So basically we’re getting a kittenty warrior healing sig, that gets the horrible trade off of doing some damage to the foe in return for not healing at all if the opponent doesn’t attack instead of every second regardless. I had a sliver of excitement to come back when I heard lifesteal signet despite the nerfs coming this patch, but after the other recent BS that’s happened (t3 cult. gem shop, weed in new fractal, other heals, etc.) I’ll just play and spend money on other games as usual.
We get a signet heal with 0.001% of the warriors healing capabilities and without any healing power scaling. Or a spectral with zero to nothing LF gaining.
Necromancer:
For the necromancer, we felt that a few traits and skills were too powerful, while others were lacking in efficacy. We brought down some of the raw DPS conditions that necromancer enjoys, while also maintaining their pressure and sustain elements. The necromancer’s mobility will remain where it is currently, as we want the Necromancers to be focused on sustaining themselves through death shroud, siphoning health, and slowing down their opponent’s ability to act.
Hmmm…
They want us to sustain ourselves through Death Shroud and siphoning health? Really?
Who could forget this zinger from the July 23rd, 2013 patch:
- Damage taken while in death shroud will now overflow to the necromancer’s health pool if the damage taken is greater than the remaining life force. (nope, haven’t forgotten; nope, not gonna let it go)
Or these gems from the October 15th, 2013 patch
- Bloodthirst: This trait now grants 20% bonus siphoning, down from 50% more effectiveness (which results in no change when combined with the change to other siphoning traits). <== Their words, not mine.
- Vampiric, Vampiric Precision, Vampiric Rituals, and other life siphon skills: Increased the base siphoning by 20%. (which resulted in a net increase of a whopping two – yes, you read that right – two additional points of life siphoning when combined with the nerfed Bloodthirst)
And now – just for kittens and giggles – the upcoming December 10th patch:
- Soul Reaping II. Vital Persistence: Increased reduction of life force drain from 25% to 50%. (A little tip: our sustain issues have nothing to do with how fast or how slow Life Force degens while in Death Shroud; nada, zero, zilch, zip.)
But to be fair, they didn’t say, “…we want the Necromancers to sustain themselves through death shroud, siphoning health…”.
What they actually said was, “…we want the Necromancers to be focused on sustaining themselves through death shroud, siphoning health…”
Ok, fair enough. I’m focusing. I’m focusing real, reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaal hard.
Hmmm…
My sustain doesn’t seem to be any better than what it was before.
Here’s a crazy idea:
Maybe it’s not the necro community that needs to do the focusing. Perhaps the focus needs to come from somebody else and directed at listening to what the community is telling you, rather than balancing off of a database of metrics or around the least played game mode (sPvP/tPvP).
And for the love of Grenth, could we PLEAAAAAAAAAAASE get someone on the balance team who actually plays necro as a main and knows the class.
Spectrals are worthless?! What planet do you live on lol you get a single skill that can eat an entire Ele burst in DS from 1/2 to barely more than 1/4. Without dodging. That is unbelievably strong.
Skills that can “at an entire Ele burst”
Warrior endure pain; check
Guardian renewed focus; check
Mesmer distortion; check
Ele mist form; check
Thief teleports+stealth; check
Engi elixir s; check
Ranger signet of stone; check
And those are just the ones that popped right in my mind, there are even more.
Stop uttering nonsense and trying to bring down a class cause you can’t play yourself.
I think they may might be actually trying to discourage necros from entering the tournament…
i could believe that……and promoting perma stealth / back stab thieves…..lol……when you can see one near death and a stack of bleeds go stealth and come out at full health…..REPEATEDLY……yea…..
We will see soon enough if audacious teams get rewarded or not. Anyway, just 4-5 days for EU players to adapt to the changes is really short. Most teams will probably stay with a composition they are comfortable with, and just work a bit on how to counter potential opponents’ necro.
(edited by Ara.4569)
Tried necro in the pvp-setting – focus fire all the way w/o any chance to react.
DS burns down, flippering all the way .- downstate #2 no option because of stability…
no lemming option left – desparate
Does anyone remember the days when warriors would wreck entire groups on point with hundred blades spam and how every kept calling for its nerf? I do. Now people call warriors useless. What happened? HB wasn’t nerfed. People just learned how to play. Give it a few more weeks. If we’re still blowing “groups” of people up (game is not balanced 1v1), then something needs to change.
Its to early to call necros OP. Top teams telling me they just face rolled with a double necro comp doesn’t tell me anything. These people have played together for so long that they should, without even telling each other, already understand what needs to be done and how to support one another.
(edited by Kravick.4906)
So people are mad that Necros are like a real class now?
They should just make them slightly larger. I have trouble fighting Asura Mesmer, Engineer, and Guardian. You just cannot tell what they’re doing.
This thread goes to show you just how upset the necro community really is. I know Bas and Bhawb, as well as some others, try to make the situation as positive as they can, but lets face facts here. Necros are angry. Very angry, and rightfully so. We don’t need fixes now, we need them yesterday. Hell, we need them last month! This class is in absolutely horrible shape right now.
While I am not going to give specific details, as I don’t want to out anyone seeing how it could get them in trouble, but there is even some resentment within ANet itself at how this class was destroyed after BWE and then largely ignored.
I’m still predicting disappointment in the upcoming balance patch, however. Remember, developers did not say they were focusing on necros this patch. They said it was a hot topic. They also said that this was a balance patch for all classes. I’m still predicting that a majority of their focus will be on the more populated classes.
If I’m wrong about this, I want someone to dredge this post up from the depths and shove it in my face. I would love nothing more than to be wrong and have to eat my words here.
(edited by Kravick.4906)
and this would not really help any non bleed builds much…
Warriors aren’t even viable and yet you want them to refocus their attention on extra builds for classes that are already at the top of the food chain… lets at least get every class 1 viable tPvP build.
This SotG was pure Necro and Warrior + sPvP in general.
I’m hopeful, but still skeptical until I see what gets done.
Still, better than just disappointed like other SotGs…

Our class code is most likely an abomination that only the bravest of coders agree to work with for 5 times the payment or something like that.
Necromancer is perfectly fine where it’s at in my opinion, ranger just needs to be brought down a little to make it a more viable option for teams. Even if ranger doesn’t get nerfed, necro is just one of those classes with a higher skill floor than the other condi classes out there, and can bring a lot of things to a team comp that ranger simply cannot (aoe blind spams on point, epidemic, boon hate, WELLS, insta clutch fears, ect…). Just because it’s harder to play doesn’t mean it’s not viable.
Now build diversity is a whole nother matter.
Ranger is not the problem with Necro. Necro disappeared almost entirely as a few things happened.
1) HGH Engis – as more people started picking up HGH everyone figured out that it provided far superior condition pressure to what Necro can bring to the table
2) Boon strips became more common on other classes to compensate – Some comps were handcuffed to necro to get the boon strips, but when they found out they could make due by altering their other players slightly and Thief got a spammable boon steal there was no longer a limiting factor forcing a Necro into a spot in the comp.
3) This goes back a way, but the Epidemic nerf was a biggie. The skill was too much the way it was, but pre-nerf it was a crutch that made Necro’s worth having.
There are other points that chipped in along the way, but in my mind these are the biggest factors.
3.- DS is also fine, again learn how to use it instead of complaining. It’s only issue is Doom’s bug (doesnt do anything and triggers CD if used right as you enter DS).
This has never happened to me, and I tap into Death Shroud to instantly Doom most of the time I use Death Shroud.
You have no idea what you are talking about.
