Simple answer: Too much ranged damage, too little close quarter damage, far too much CC. The game revolves around who can either kite the better and blast from the distance, or who can kite the better doing damage and moving in for the spike kill.
You can only have some many different builds that essentially do the same in one class…

Nop, not trolling, not being aggressive either, i asking a simple level headed question. I am a rather long time and returning customer, disappointed with the product, that is it.
As it stands i am simply asking if it is possible to close the account and get a refund, they can verify the account is no more than 1 or 2 (don’t remember exactly) weeks old.

I have all GW1 expansions, and i am a long time MMO player, i was really looking forward to GW2 for that PVP MMO experience. Sadly the state of PVP in not what i hoped for and everything is reduced to kiting and blasting from a distance.
I am really sad it has come to this but i would like to know if there is a way to request a reimbursement given the fact that there is not trial period.

melee has higher burst. ranged has higher pressure.

Yes and no way to get there to use it, other than again class like ele or rogue, that do not stick to the opponent just jump in spike jump out.
And higher spike is up for debate at this point, the warrior and the guardian do about the same damage melee than an ele or a mesmer do ranged.

No? Where are you getting that impression? All professions have weapons and builds suitable for ranged and melee (well, maybe not a ranged Guardian). You can have both, or one or the other.

So it seems and as a result, 99% of players, shot from a distance. Still i would like a dev to make it official. People that dislike it, would just leave (like me) and people that like it, would not have to put up with this kind of threads. Until they make it official, to me this is a balance issue. If they came out and say we are happy as it stands, then so be it, my best wishes and ill leave (and i imagine a grate many will as well).

Also as it stands the problem you have is that since range can outdo melee, nobody fights melee. Period. There has to be a trade of, melee has to have a damage and control advantage over ranged once in close quarters otherwise there is simply no point for it, which is what happens now.

It's time to balance PvP apart from PvE/WvW

Well they could try to Instead of separating the stats and sets, which imbalances how the same skill acts in one setting vs the other, merge them together as they did in GW1.
Values will be the same, damage out put and intake will be about the same, may be ramp def a little, god knows no one gives a crap about wearing a tshirt vs a full plate in this game any way, and you valance from there. Sure you will get builds that are popular for one setting and builds that are poppular for the other setting, at least you will have a base line to draw comparisons from.

A skill that triggers on crit, does not work the same way when you can easily come up with 100% crit with out sacrificing your other stats vs that forcing you to for go the others. It just does not happen.

To be honest, while i might agree or disagree with the idea, i dont currently think is fiseable, you already have long ques for pvp, if the system should also have to match the classes, you would be sitting there forever waiting to be called for the game.
Not to mention, the difficulty brought up by the fact that the most powerful classes are generally speaking the ones more played as well.

Melee is a dead breed in this game. Ranged outclasses it in every single way.

I agree, but is it intentional? that i think is very important, if this is what Devs want, then complaining about it is pointless and one should just move along or move away.

There was nothing toxic about your comments. I don’t think what you’ve said has been well received because the people responding probably never played gw1 pvp, so they have no idea what you are saying.

I’m a gw1 vet, gw2 pvp isn’t even close to the level of gw1 pvp. Many fans of the original migrated to gw2 in hopes to experience the next level of pvp. But instead they got something that is far inferior to gw1. The roles have significantly reversed, while gw1 pve was lackluster but pvp phenomenal. Gw2 pve is great but pvp is generally lacking.

And I suspect just as in the original gw1, were they couldn’t fix pvp due to the basic mechanics gw1 revolved around. Gw2 pvp may suffer the same fate.

Well i don’t think GW2 has received a death sentence yet, CD mechanic can still be salvaged, its all about redefining the classes and their roles and balances. How ever I dont think the player base actually realizes how Critical it is they act on it pronto. This aint WoW, there is no subscription fee in place. Much of this game´s future relies on how well its expansions sell, and at this point in time, i dont really think they would sell all that good, thou this is completely my opinion and i have no hard data what so ever to back it up, i dont consider the expansions would sell all that well based solely on the pve aspect of the game.

Also Baam, i dont know if you ever played GW1, and i dont want to sound condescending or insulting, but all the roles you described were already there in GW1, and they were much more complex than their current incarnation.

So the first video is about an Engineer, running a grenade build, which again is a kiting ranged build, bombs are left there and the pistol, well its a pistol it fires at range. So in all honestly, this video strikes out and falls under what i described above, kiting, closing for spiking, kiting. If you meant it about the dagger elementist, yeah i grant you 3 on 1 melee builds can work, as well as anything else for that matter.

Should i sit through the others?. I do appreciate the effort how ever, if you tell me the others are different, i promise to sit and watch them.

The biggest difference is what mechanics they can fulfill, (peeling, stomping, bunkering, rezzing, killing, providing utility, support, teammate condi clears, condis, CC, mobility, etc.) and how well they can do it. This is really just an issue with you being not yet 100% familiar with the game.

P.S.: I get that you are not happy with GW2, but stop with the toxic comments in other threads. Try to keep the forum environment constructive and positive

I made no toxic comments, this are realities that many of us dislike. I am glad you are happy with the current state of the game, how ever a rather large majority seems not to be. When a game renown for its pv kitten alvaged thanks to its pve, then there is clearly an issue there. When so many people leave and complain the about the same things then you should pay attention to it, i own GW1 expansions and I would not buy GW2 expansion even if they were 50% off, heck i would take a reimbursement if they offered one on the GW2 core set. They experimented with the Design and it failed, there is no reason the game cant be salvaged yet, Its pve will not keep it alive forever.

Sorry I do not understand what you meant to write. If you mean that there are viable warrior builds, I am sure some one might pull something off here and there. The norm how ever is that melee sucks. I “dare” you find on this forum, 10 videos of high level pvp play of any sort, where Melee warrior are actually present. Forget about owning, just showing up on the screen for anything other than getting massacred. All you see out there is:
Ranged Mesmer
Ranged Engineer
Ranged Elementist (big surprise there i know)
Ranged Ranger
Ranged Necro
So on so Forth

At the very most they play kite, until they can close in to spike and then kite again.

Which as i said before, can be intentional, no melee play, that’s cool, would be nice if they stated it thou.

Melee can also exist but like GW1 if you want to stay in melee you pretty much need someone to support you so you don’t get rolled.
Guardian/Ele helps in that respect.

Problem is, you get no benefit from doing this, unlike GW1, there is no dedicated support class, and what your partner does to keep your target glued in place so you can reach him, would most likely be more effective you both simply blasted away from the distance.

I’m not sure why anyone would want to be melee only. the versatility of combining ranged attacks with melee attacks is fairly potent. That’s half the reason I bought the game right there.

Well for some classes it is kind of iconic, When i think ranged physical damage, its a Rogue or a Thief what comes to mind, no a warrior, much less so a Guarian/Paladin. That regarding design.
Regarding Mechanics and Valance, right now, being melee is a drawback, plain and simple. As I said before, this can be intentional, not saying i would like that, but there would be a logic behind it. It kind of comes with the territory of breaking away from the trinity, if every one can do everything, then what is a warrior but an overdressed Thief?.

Yeah right, because the idea of defending a pvp build and the word warrior go hand in hand…

It can be entirely possible, they just dont really care if they are viable. It would not be “wrong” per se, its a design choice.

I mean from a design point of view, what do designers want? given that all classes can effectively fight from range, and that there is so much CC and gap makers in this game, do Devs actually want melee focused classes?.
Not a rant but a simple question. Right this moment there is no class that can effectively depend on staying on melee combat. The rogue bypasses this by spiking damage and shadowsteping, they do not stay in melee but get in, spike, and get out. On every single video posted here, there is no one engaging or focused on Melee fighting, this is both on spvp and wvw. Is this intentional? is this the direction the devs want to take the game?.

You want a short solution, simple, halve the gap closing CDs and or include 2 in every weapon AND double melee damage in comparison with ranged.

Now I understand that the idea behind HGH it to stack might. How ever when i look might up in the wiki, it states that it stack in intensity NOT duration. Meaning if i get the 20s might from HGH, then 5 seconds later I get 1 more for 10 seconds, in total i would get 5 seconds might1, 10 seconds might2, 5 seconds might 1 again not 2, not a total of 15 secs at might 2 either.

Now while i agree might is good, i dont think 1 or 2 pips of might is going to actually matter much.

Disclaimer, assumed HGH = 1 might for simplicity sakes.

As far as balancing goes, they’ve been playing whack-a-mole with a limp-wrist from the beginning. I’m so tired of hearing rhetoric like: meta just needs to work it out and L2P. Instead of junk factors like boonhate, I think they need to start balancing the OP factors that already exist across all classes: more equal amounts of boons, stripping, condis, cleansing, stunbreaks, healing, mobility, vigor, time spent invulnerable, ect.

Problem is that would destroy the already little and mediocre class differentiation that there is.

Well, many people say ele’s can’t be destroyed and warriors are useless… i think that’s a little too eccentric.

Well, i got bad news for you, crushing nerf not withstanding, eles are always going to dominate. Consider it, this entire games revolves around limited and over the top CDs on support and limited CDs on your weapon (which are much less powerful save one or 2 which again have long CDs) on that same paradigm you have Eles Who can essentially bypass this limitation on their weapons by switching atunements. The other ones that do this are engineers, why dont they dominate? simple, all their weapon skills are below average at best.

Same goes for Warriors or any melee class for that matter. With so much crap flying around there is no way your long CDs can keep up with your opponent kiting, and if by some miracle you ever do, you find your self doing about the same damage he does from range. Think about the Thief, he is essentially a warrior, but it works because he shots you and then shadowsteps for the kill. And the extra protection heavy armor confers in this game is laughable.

The only way i can see Meele classes as viable specially warriors in an actual melee role/stile, with out a massive overhaul on the current system is to bunch up Vitality, Damage and Crit on the same trait, Say Damage+Vit and Crit+Vit. Make it so that they have double, may be triple the HP pool of other classes, make them hard to bring down and by ramping the damage this way also make them a necessity to address. In short Lump together a bunker and damage build all in one. You will be kited, be time consuming to bring down and force a choice on your opponent, to deal with you or to kite you and deal with your team.

How could this ever be a team game, every class is self sufficient and self reliant. In that case sure Quake 3 arena is also a team game, every one can do the same there as well.

I find it funny that you have a +Healing skill with no dedicated healer class in the game. Might as well do away with it and balance healing power through lvl.

Its the perfect example of a company promising everything under the sun then failing to deliver. Anet is just lucky that PVE caught on which has hidden this gigantic failure.

Why did spvp fail?

8 Team queue for 5-6 months
No private servers
No rating / elo
No true solo queue
Zerg/farm join
Lame bunker or burst meta / teleport mesmer
Conquest sucks

As a GW1 fan, it pains me to agree, the Downed system is a poor substitute for proper support classes and melee classes are essentially irrelevant and week. I find it ironic that a game Such as GW1 which was renowned for its PvP and had a mediocre at best PvE managed to pull a 180 on this on its sequel.

I play a warrior so I have basically given up all hope and trust in Arenanet regarding balancing

Sad but true, a warrior Class has essentially no place in current GW2, since so much focus is put in dodging, self sustain and "oh “#%”% skills", what does a warrior bring to the game? you are essentially the same as a Thief with less mobility and marginally more survivable (which does not compensate the loss of mobility, no where near it actually)

1- Implement a new Dedicated healing weapon for either Guardians or Whom ever.
2- Implement UI customization.
3- Not possible but i would like they do away with over the top long CDs Skills and reserve them for the Elite Slot and move the game in a Short CDs less extreme skills basis (10s average 15s for “powerful” not elite ones).

For the record, I agree there are some major issues with GW2’s PvP at the moment, I’m getting rather tired of hearing WoW or GW1 vets coming in here and calling for a Monk or other dedicated healer/support profession like it would miraculously make things better.

Most people in GW2 came here in the first place to get away from that, it was at the core of the advertising.

Really? i came here because i liked GW1, i could bet a great many deal of players are satisfied returning customers, just like in any other business. Actually i find it rather ironic that a game as GW1 renowned for its PvP and with an average at best PvE, managed to pull a 180 on this on its sequel.

The cooldowns are a trade-off for energy (what most games use).

Now you know why other games do not do it this way. The ones that pull it off, do not do it by implementing 100 different CDs, they reserve long CDs to significant skills and tie all other skills to the CDs of a single/multiple (1 to 3 or so) clocks/resources. Call Runes in the DK class in wow, weapon overheating and reloading on FPSes and so on.

Option to change buttons does no work, if i change 1 say to 2 on my main weapon set it will also change it on my secondary weapon set, which may not (and most of the time is not) be what i would want.

Before i get started i little background about my self. I played 3 out of the 4 GW1 “expansions”, Played years of WoW, played years of LoL. Now, im sort of still new to GW2, ill give you that, but i can sort of get the feeling already about its pvp.

This critique is mainly about sPvP, which was sort of a core feature in GW1.
IHMO problem with GW2 revolves around there being too much damage flying round, too long of cooldown on support skills and no dedicated support classes. Yes there are classes that support classes that can sort of bring some utility to the game, but truth be told and as is to be expected with this paradigm, they will essentially be blown out of the water by high damage long range classes.

1rst Problem: No support.
There is no class in the game that can effectively Heal its group, and i mean spam healing, reduce damage intake. The Guardian can sort of do this, but not really being all his healing CDs on 20+ seconds. You get some Damage reduction CDs Like protector´s strike, that are again on a 15 to 20+ second CDs.

2nd Problem: Melee classes not really viable.
Given P1 the obvious P2 arises, since you have no support what so ever, and limited healing the only really viable builds are those that either burn you out from 100% to 0% in 3 seconds flat or Kite you to death. If you think about it, they only class that you see fight melee are thieves which essentially do the former, they don’t stay melee in the strict seance of the word.

3rd Problem: UI extremely clunky.
No macros, Action bar customization, Managing multiple action bars. I understand that you will need to implement multiple action bars for the different weapons, i am not new to this concept, i used to play a feral druid in WoW. How ever, why is it that i can not position the skills on my action bar as i see fit?. Say i need to play a combo sequence involving 2 skills from the main weapon and then switch and cast 3 of the other. Why is it i can not position the skills so that is 1, 2, mouse 3, 1, 2, 3 ?, why does it need to be 1, 3, mouse 3, 4, 1, 3? what is the point on that?, its not like i would be requesting a macro god forbid, but this is extremely exacerbated on classes like Elementists or Engineers.

4rd Problem: CDs upon CDs upon CDs.
So you have your Healing skill CD, you Weapon Switching CD, you Individual Skill CD, Your support Skill CD. To make matters worst, the game is designed in such a way that you essentially should not spam anything but your “1”, which is nice and all but it breaks the flow of the game, instead of a steady combat, you have combos that will break combat one way or the other.

5th Problem: No class Differentiation.
Armor on this game is borderline pointless, yes it reduces damage, but so much focus is put on dodging, skill combination, kiting, condition damage, and X second damage immunity skills that armor on it self is almost relevant, so Defensive damage reduction through armor is about the same for everyone.
All classes have self sustain.
All classes can fight melee or ranged, yes melee sucks in general, but every one can suck just the same or fight ranged and kite.
All classes can spam conditions far beyond any other class capability of removing them.
All classes have some sort of ranged/alfa strike build.
Differences between classes are minimal, they all do all they just do it differently.

Bottom line, i expected more, GW1 had a fantastic pvp system, where did that go?, it was dated for sure and needed a face lift, but not this.

As engineers i believe we should adapt and use the right tool for the right situation (which involves net turret) thus im liking this build:

The Idea is to adapt and use positioning, you will have 3 immobilizing skills, reasonable long rage damage through rifle + conditions and really good short range damage through flamethrower + conditions. You are fighting a Thief, switch to Rifle and net your way out of melee. Fighting an elementist, zoom in blasting and netting with your rifle and burn him down with your flamethrower in close quarter.
Essentially this high damage build lets you play the weak point in your opponents class.

I actually find medkit strictly only usable in 1v1 dueling and that is it. It does heal marginally more, but that healing is completely negated by the extra time required to use it. In the extra second or so you have to disengage to cast and pick up the healing packs your opponent can easily cause just as much or more damage than they will actually heal you for.

If both sigils have a cooldown, no matter what type they are, the one cooldown can not proc till the cooldown of the other is done.

So in your case: when the might procs, the next 10 seconds the chill can not proc.
After 10 seconds the chill or the might can proc, but whichever it is, sets the shared cooldown in motion again. Either 2 seconds if lucky or the 10 seconds.
Bad news is: main weapon often takes priority.
So maybe swap weapons

No big deal, I would do away with Chilling and either adding 5% crit or Damage. You still get swiftness from Crits so Chilling is overkill.

I like this one, is a little bit softer than a tanking build, but damage is off the scale.

With out any boons you are sitting at:
20k hp
2300 Armor
2200 Attack
1000 Condition damage.
76% Crit

On Crit you have chance of proccing:
33% Burning through Incendiary powder
30% Bleading through Sharp Shooter
50% Vulnerability through Precise Sights
30% Might Through Signet
50% Swiftness through Infused Presicion

When these start stacking and at 76% crit, they will. They put down some serious hurt.

I can handle either the button magic or the targeting, but in a class as complex as the engi, i think both of them in the same skill, is pushing it.

How about 10/30/0/20/10, gear for 71% crit, sigil for steal hp con crit, remove condition on crit and chill on crit.

You would be stealing HP and have permanent bleeding, vulnerability, chill and burning

Hi everyone, i just wanted to make this little suggestion. Before i get into it, while granted i dont have much experience in GW2, i do have it in MMOs in general, played GW1 and WOW for years, And it is my opinion that interface should facilitate (to a point) the player interaction with the system and not become a burden. I have been following the trends here and there and general opinion seems to be that engineers are rather on the weak side. I have no doubt that this is in big part due to the rather steep learning curve when compared to other classes, likely second only to Elementists. Which to a certain point is understandable, the engi is much more of a “mental burden” than say the Thief or the Warrior, having said that, it does seem to me it kind of suffers from a mix of complex gaming mechanics added to that same “mental burden” that also brought the Hunter down in WoW.

For those not familiar with WoW the hunter suffered from the same this as the engi does, a plethora of skills and combinations and an effectiveness rating highly dependent on how and when each each of those skills, across different “skillsets/tools” and independent cool downs are blown. The solution in WoW, came through a skills rework and “Quality of life” implementations.

Now Back to GW2. GW2 is a much more complex and far better and more balanced game than WoW, that said how ever, same technics could be applied here. The grenade kit seems relegated to some support in the form of healing grenades or siege defense where it they can be cast from a safe spot. I think the main reason for this is due to the complexity of the engi class mechanics and the added mental burden of button mashing when casting the first grenade skill (which lacks auto attack). Now the conventional auto attack would not work for this skill because of the obvious targeting mechanics, but i would like (and i think many others as well) to see an equivalent say “auto cast” that works the same way of auto attack but is a “toggle” skill which will continuously cast grenade to your pointer position (when in range).
Players already do this through 3rd party soft running on a lower layer to implement macros, i think this should be avoided and the interface enhanced to facilitate this quality of life change.
