Open World generally just isn’t that hard period as you learn to play the game. You can challenge yourself by trying one of the dungeons though and you will have access to them as you get higher.

Also, the Orr zones may start ramping up the difficulty a little at the end.

I just leveled my 3rd character a ranger, and yea even with the level 20 scroll, half a dozen exp boosters and crafting chef to 400 and armorsmith to 300 it was really annoying, and that exp nerf from crafting wasn’t very pleasant at all.

I wish the level 20 scrolls just added 20 levels.

But gearing at 80 is probably the worst part as it can take a bite out of the bank, and that’s not even the worst part— all dem ascended trinkets! Buying exotic jewelry seems so lame since you know they’ll be obsolete quite quickly.

I run full clerics shout guardian. I feel super effective at playing support/healing.

99% of players ahve never even tried healing gear much less to the point that they’re good with it……………….that’s the reality of it.

You wouldn’t need to heal if the others in your group know how to dodge/avoid things, unless of course this is WvW then ignore what i said. Also on the support side, you can do all the boons of a zerker guardian, yet the zerker guardian will also have 10x the damage capabilities which of course is all that really matters in PvE.

You can only control your own actions though; they need to learn to dodge on their own

And yea, you definitely can go full zerker and still offer support in PvE contexts which is why 10/30/0/5/25 is so popular. In fact said build offers MORE support than the selfish AH builds.

Starting point for wvw?

It would be nice if you could wait until level 40 at least to go in, because even if you get upleveled, the lack of traits and stats from gear will make you a very vulnerable target. You may in fact die to just arrow cart fire and you going down can result in enemy rallies.

I say level 40 for these reasons
- Access to yellow gear but you don’t NEED it.
- Major Runes (Consider Monk/Water Runes)
- You get the level 40 trait manual which allows master traits.
- You won’t instantly die

For this reason, it’s best to play a support role and staff is the obvious thing to bring with group swiftness and might. I recommend Strength in Numbers (increases your toughness as well as the toughness of others around you. Shouts are a no brainer (Hold the Line/ Stand your ground) so take the shout reduction cool down and finally grab the inspired virtues for the boons that get granted on virtue activation (in particular f1)

So it should look like:
10 Valor
15 Honor (selfless daring gives you healing dodge rolls)
5 Virtue

As you get more skill points, you will want to take the Tome of Courage Elite skill but that could take a while to get. Two handed mastery for cooldown reductions is nice.

On switch you can put on scepter/shield, since you won’t be doing much up close, thus you can try plinking away, and giving group knockback and protection.

Main problem will be conditions and Pure of Voice has not come yet so you better pray your group has decent cleanse or you may take purging flames/smite condition and eat some clam chowder (level 25, really cheap food) and/or use major melandru runes.

As you gain wvw abilities, I recommend taking the supply line traits except the last one for now. This will make you useful for supply runs at least.

Support roles work fine in wvw, sure it’s pretty lame that only dps matters in PvE but I think it’s honestly more fun that roles aren’t “enforced” in this game.

Support works fine in pve too. As long as you have 2 or less supports and 3 dps you’re golden.

Honestly I seriously doubt that any of you even own healing gear. I know this game inside and out and I also know that 99% of my guild doesn’t own healing gear, has never owned healing gear and never will own healing gear.

Assuming my rather large guild is fairly normal I know for a fact that most of you don’t even run boon duration.

Boon duration is more important than healing power for support but 300 regen ticks don’t hurt either.

We have! It just got salvaged >.> And I get boon duration from traits, lol.

Although you have a point beyond boon duration being very nice. Honestly, you don’t have to be “meta” to get things done in this game and I think that it’s not as narrow as people may suggest.

The irony of adding strictly defined roles is that this would become the “meta”. Let’s say that a fight revolved around you having a dps, a tank, and a healer for optimal play; well, then that becomes the meta and every other style of play would be made inherently inferior…

Prower

I share pretty much the same feelings as you do haha. The only reason I really play now is because of my guild/friends.

This. It’s always the people that keep me going – without a bunch of friends and a guild to spam to, I probably would have quit this game before completing my Sunrise. It’s my friends that motivate me and keep me going in between new content patches, and they’ve done so sufficiently for me to begin working for Eternity.

Trust me, after over 3000 hours you’re sure to tire of the content and begin playing to chat more than to be productive.

Guilds sure do help. I admit, I may not be around if it weren’t which is why I understand those that can’t find a good guild to have an inferior playing experience.

But I’d like to put something in perspective. I know 3000 hours is an arbitrary number but…

It’s been 498 days since Gw2 came out. 3000/498 = a little more than 6 hours. I’m not sure how one could possibly not exhaust an activity that has 25% of their entire existence devoted to.

I just don’t think it’s a problem that can be solved because at the rate of content consumption, the requirements would be massive and even if people who played more than this had those needs satisfied, then a lot of the more casual gamers would feel left behind.

The only hope is in user created content, like pvp and wvw. But for those that aren’t into that, the only chance is to add things to enhance the player’s ability to express creativity. More skins, colors, and some form of roleplay. (Like housing; my heroes have earned so much slaying evil, and they’re still homeless beyond that lame instance? I should be able to buy another house!) And confining any intresting look to the gem store is not adequate. And even considering them, it’s really so little variety. Why does Medium armor have only a handful of non-trenchcoats?

So basically, the focus needs to change. No more of this 2 week release thing. It just doesn’t work and only fulfills a temporary need to grind. True horizontal progression >> Shallow Vertical Progression.

It sounds insanely boring to play as a dedicated healer or tank.

I mean I can understand that a healing/tanking fighter would be an idea, but just sitting back and timing heals?

I honestly prefer the concept of everyone having to take the responsibility for healing and support.

Healing power is still a joke in this game and that needs to change though.

"This is a skill-based game"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: ArchonWing.9480

ArchonWing.9480

A testament to how skill based a game is, is by how many bads complain about failing.

It’s not too bad here. Although let’s admit that this isn’t an esports despite what some may claim.

Also, it’s also dependent on performance difference between 2 equally leveled and geared characters. Is there a huge difference between 2 equally geared rangers, but one just camps with a longbow with a bear vs a ranger that switches weapons and pets? I think so, I hope. Is there a difference between 2 zerker players of which one tries to facetank and the other dodges? The former leads to wipes due to being a deadweight, the later leads to speedruns. And a lot of people aren’t able to do dungeons properly; there’s a big diffrence between casual runs and those hardcore speedruns.

And I find it’s perfectly fine that there’s easy faceroll content that caters to just pressing 1 (actaully if you turn on autoattack you don’t really have to spam it, scrubs). Of course, you could do the harder stuff, like roaming in wvw (maybe on a class that doesn’t have 9 billion escapes) or the instance content which can’t be “zerged”. But if you can’t, then maybe you should just stick to 1111 in zergs because chances are, that’s all you’re capable of. You know, especially the crowd that goes “all you have to do in pve dungeons is to wear zerker and dodge”, but don’t do actually do it, because it’s too tedious or not how the way they want to play. Eh? I’ve played 1300 hours in this game over 400ish days (that’s like more than 3 hours a day!), and only have 2 80s with a 3rd one heading towards 80. Have made one ascended weapon, have not yet gotten map completion, have not gone past fractals beyond level 20, and have like finished one dungeon (cof lol).

It’s a good thing I’m not a masochist, since when stuff comes along that I don’t care for such as the last few Living Story things, I just don’t do them. And this is coming from someone that HATES grinding. I hate leveling to 80, and all this ascended trash to me is pretty awful, so I haven’t even planned on ascended armor. But that’s because so little of it actually matters. I just go plink away in wvw somewhere.

It’s going to take a long time for me to even think of exhausting the content in the game, but yes I’m not gonna have a mental breakdown if some AP or laurels won’t be made. I like the scenery and I like killing people. That is all.

I can’t understand how someone can feel “forced” to do anything. It’s not like your stats will fall behind by 500% if you don’t. If I log on and find that there’s no action in wvw and the dailies suck… I don’t do them! And it doesn’t really happen too much that I log on and there’s nothing to do. At the very least, I get bored and help some random person or a guildie in a mid level zone. Yea, God forbid anything be done for something other than personal gain. The way some forum posts goes it sounds like people are pointing a gun on them and forcing them to log on. Go outside and do something.

The State of Balance discussion

in Ranger

ArchonWing.9480

I’m currently leveling a ranger (now currently 50). I don’t have too much experience obviously, and excluding the open world stuff, I’ve done some wvw zerging and low level fractals. I can’t say I understand all of the despair though I suppose I may need to level to 80 to see it all. Though I can’t imagine wvw getting any harder.

I can see why zerging can be tough. Aoe ranged damage is quite lame, with it being centered completely around barrage, a skill I don’t find impressive at all since the cast time is awful. Tagging is not amusing at all. It looks like piercing arrow > spotter in zergs?

I’m curious on why people think rangers give crap support. Spotter is a really good trait that increases group dps and call of the wild+ Healing Spring is what? nearly 50% uptime on fury coupled with condi pulsing clear, a blasted water field, and swiftness and also vigor if traited. I wish I could heal groups like that with my guardian. Sure, this is missing protection, but vigor is really good.

The class is also very mobile. It’s no warrior or thief, but since my other characters are guardian and necro, any kind of reasonable escape ability seems like it’s Christmas.

Pet AI is kinda awful; I think they need to be more durable in any meaningful content.

I think the ultimate problem is that this game is very biased against range. Being ranged means you are out of range for boons and gap closers make kiting nearly impossible. And even if you can take people down, the rally system ensures that if anything happens to you, then your efforts will be in vain.

I recommend you start zerker AH; investing in another set will just be too much of a cost for a new player especially for one that will go obsolete, unless you plan on doing wvw. On the other hand, it is cheap to retrait. Once you get more comfortable you can retrait to more offensive builds and if need be just do so immediately. ArchonWing.9480

For the sake of posterity

Dear all,

I am very distraught that my class is so underpowered and I have to work 3x as hard as my opponent who just rolls his face over the keyboard and kills me instantly if I make a single mistake. You have no idea how much skill and dedication I have to put in when all some random scrub needs to do is just pick some OP build and win. Anet, why is every class so easy to play except the one I played? I mean I just rolled the OP class and it was so faceroll! That moa in Queensdale died in 3 seconds. I can’t even do that on my current character. I also got 17 kills in wvw at level 2; sure they were all afk, but still … yea! See, every other class besides the one I play is unfair, except mine, which takes true skill to play because you gotta work harder to overcome imbalance. It has nothing to do with how I play, because my play is always perfect and I don’t exploit imbalance like those other poopyheads. Every time I win, it’s because I was a genius and outplayed them with my brilliance; every time I lose they either got lucky, hacked, brought someone else, or did something really cheap. So please, nerf the crap out of them or I will quit playing. Well, not really. I might close the game though.

Just find a group that isn’t bent on speedrunning. We would never kick anyone just for having crappy gear (unless I know them personally and they are purposely gimping themselves due to laziness. Or they are insisting on doing something and not actually doing it.) , though condi damage is typically a no-go just because it is broken in PvE. I’m pretty sure we could make something of use for you, even if it’s not optimal or whatnot. I’m not really in a place to call anyone bad, after all. ;p

I don’t care if it takes 50% as long as one keeps a good attitude. Yea, I know that’s really the hardest part.

ArchonWing.9480

A lot of people say dead dps = no dps. Which is fine, until you realize they already have like no dps to begin with, aka they’re practically dead anyways.

Sometimes it’s pretty annoying as I do drop dead as I am bad at this game (what the heck is a dodge?) and need to be res’d but then I notice the boss is almost dead and is taking forever to go down anymore because most of the damage came from me! I remember my friend telling me that he wasn’t using his damage set but he didn’t tell anyone. Yea, I wasn’t fooled at all. And it’s my fault of course. Wait, where’s the healing to me? (You’re healing yourself) This support? This tanking? What are you doing? Well, it’s your job to res me I guess.

I’m not exactly a dps zealot though it’d be nice if people actaully sought to accomplish what they were actually doing, optimal or not. Although truth be told, a cleric Battle Presence Hammer Guardian is most likely better than a AH soldier gear useless person.

in Guardian

ArchonWing.9480

Guardians are in a good spot…. my kitten! If they’re in a good spot, then what’s with this change to staff 3 that nobody asked for?

They were in a good spot when PoV was bugged. That’s kinda telling? The class was doing fine due to a bug, and not genius design?

What’s the compensation? A boost to condition grandmaster trait, when our only condition gets overwritten so easily? A heal that, lol. To actually explain it out loud why that is bad would be insulting your intelligence, so I won’t start.

The balance patch is quite a disaster simply because we were told in advance and NOTHING was done about feedback since most stayed the same and it’s not just this class either. I have the suspicion they’re trying to drive certain classes into the ground so people will stop playing them, thus they can remove it and spend time on balancing less classes. Kinda like how there’s only 1 good stat combo in PvE excluding World Bosses.

Alright, so I’ll say that perhaps I lack the knowledge to achieve balance. But please, anyone who thought of the changes can look at the mirror, play this class at level 80 in any of the commonly played environments and say with a straight face that these are good changes that involve deeper gameplay, or invoke a higher skill cap, or leads to more engaging gameplay, or screw it, just anything reasonable that involves things in practice rather than actual concept with a straight face, then I will accept their position somewhat. Or I’m just going to assume 5 minutes were spent testing in Queensdale. If even that. :/ Perhaps it hurts to read this as it might have a little basis in reality? If it does, don’t get mad at me; then consider that things might have to change.

It’s something that needs to be understood. On one end, players are tunnel visioned and resistant to change, including myself. They will only look after their own interests and not seek to adapt, thus they will not place priority on creating good gameplay. On the other hand, developers simply are not capable of beating the player base at the metagame, because the collective skill of players will always be higher. Your players are always going to be better at the game than you, and thus you need to adapt your concepts and gameplay to that assumption. Actually you don’t have to, but nobody here wants Gw2 to go into the trash bin. TL;DR You can’t possibly know everything, so open your ears. This applies to everyone! I’m not saying that Anet should listen to me in particular, but there’s just so many people out there that spend so much time exploring the depths of the game that really should because they just know better, and even excluding their biases.

Yea honestly I think it’s kinda dumb. It’s not like PvE POIs are randomly filled with 30 champions waiting to block you; most of PvE outside of group events is just your own failings as a player if you can’t get it. And even in those cases you can guest. I also just don’t think PvE should be in WvW. I mean how many WvW players complain about that Living Story garbage in the maps? It adds nothing, and you don’t really explore anything in WvW anyways— you have the whole map revealed already.

Of course, this is coming from someone with all 4 maps done and thought it was a waste of time. On the other hand, the only zones that I am missing from 100% map completion (at 87 on the highest character) are all 1-15/15-25 zones which I refuse to do because it’s so friggin boring.

Probably just 1 on my guardian main. The main problem is the bother with crafting across multiple professions— with incoming armor making the issue worse. I currently only have weaponsmith to 500 and could craft a 2nd ascended weapon, but in practice the 2nd most used weapon is scepter and that requires artifactor. So Armor is gonna be way down the line. I play mostly wvw and don’t really care for grinding any more.

They just need to make more long chain events and trains in other zones.

Truth is, after the repeated Cursed Shore Nerfs before the train started, there was probably zero reason to play open world beyond leveling because there was nothing to be gained from it— oh good a rare after 15 minute world boss! And the only reason people are like that is because crap was nerfed elsewhere— so it’s pretty laughable to think that making the problem worse will solve the problem.

Bring back Cursed Shore or something… boost the loot greatly and revert it back to the old difficulty.

Ah the rewards were just as terribly designed as the season itself. Well, at least I hope that will discourage the multi-hour long queues next time around.

Point for point, it’s clear that power always grants the highest damage yield. However, in the context of wvw, it’s not just about sustained damage that dictates everything because people avoid and mitigate attacks. Thus, the damage spikes with high crit chance and damage can be very effective at downing people the fastest in big fights. And a wellmancer is about delivering really big damage spikes combined with miscellaneous effects.

The Ascii build was meant for commanding, and it provides high survivability and utility while maintaining the ability to put forth decent damage. So the precision does increase some overall dps while increasing survivability without going all out blocky tank.

With the upcoming change to Deadly Strength, it’s going to be even more effective soon.

Spectral Walk over Signet of Locust?

Spectral Walk hasn’t left my bar in forever, though it’s not just the swiftness that makes me use it. If you meet up with a zerg that covers some of your swiftness needs, it’s also good for actually fighting too.

I’ve never understood why people run the queensdale train instead of the frostgorge train. Whenever I run the frostgorge train i get significantly better loot. Is there a real logical reason to do the queensdale over frostgorge? serious question.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Queensdale-champ-train-profit/first#post3254559

This question comes up with surprising regularity about every 2 weeks.

There are multiple reasons, including those listed in this thread and all the threads linked in this thread.

People who view the game as nothing but statistics and numbers will never understand it. And thus they hate what they can’t understand.

I have done maybe a few in the past month or so? And only because I was in Queensdale at the time. My general feeling is of apathy, not hatred or jealousy.

They should really award ascended pieces by doing exceptional feats; (maybe have it as a reward for certain difficult or just inane, aka grindy, achievements). Something like beating a Liadri-like boss. Anything other than just tossing a lot of gold at the problem.

And for those that can’t do a Liadri type boss? Should they be locked out of having BiS gear? As a gw1 vet, that does not sit well with me.

I can agree with not making things excessively grindy. I can also agree with not making things too easy to obtain either. This makes for a very delicate balance to obtain, and no easy task.

Honestly, I wouldn’t care as long as they create new opportunities. There’s many rewards in games I never could get because I didn’t deserve them and I needed to get better, as opposed to I just have to play more. But because this game always adds new content, I don’t think it’s that bad, really.

I never said that should be the only way. They could still keep the crafting part, making a slow and easy way, or a hard and fast way. Like every decent game in existence.

If you’re going to introduce stuff like this that serves as a wall, then you should at least allow different ways to get around it.

I don’t see it as a wall, per se. There isn’t anything I can’t do without it. But yes, I do agree that we need to have more acquisition options. many more

It creates some degree of separation; not much, but it still exists.

My idea of a good reward system is that opportunity should always be there to players willing to display effort and challenge. If the game had more content so that it were a constant test of these things, then I think it makes for a more engaging rewarding system in which people don’t just get tunnel vision, but might actually seek to play well and god forbid, play the content just because it’s engaging in and of itself. A lot of people complain about champion training simply because you can do it half-heartedly and will have similar results, so they don’t really feel like they have to try harder.

People should look forward to Living Story updates as a challenge to be overcome rather than some hamster wheel running. And this being said, I think that content should linger on a bit longer than it has.

This doesn’t mean that each piece of content needs to be nail bittingly close without any sense of forgiveness (You’re talking to someone that can’t for the life of him deal deal with the last Molten Facility Boss) and there needs to be breather content as well, but I actually do think they’re going to get this right eventually. Queen’s Jubilee/Gauntlet was probably the best recent update in this context.

For every thread that wants to remove a champ train in Queensdale, there shall be 5 more.

“Paternalism” as I see it is just the view that players are too stupid to think for themselves and needed to be guided if they were little children. Which is too cynical of an approach. And honestly, putting your own viewpoint as for the the greater good is why you shouldn’t use big words like that; it just seems pretentious. I mean I know that’s kind of a problem on these forums, but it’s something that should be fixed.

This “nerf prime farming spot” has been done a lot of times (sup Cursed Shore). The only thing it ever does is kill the area that gets affected, people move on to the next exploitable spot, and there are about 346185760 threads about how it’s impossible to make gold, and honestly how can one put grind in a game and then start removing the ability to do.

So sure, I’ll see to that all champ trains are removed if ascended gear besides trinkets are removed. Nope? It’s here to stay.

In any case, we don’t need nerfs; we need buffs. Buff hard content and buff the rewards. The easymoders can stay where they are; everyone else can go enjoy something else. Teq is a good step in that direction.

Something like beating a Liadri-like boss. Anything other than just tossing a lot of gold at the problem. I wouldn’t care if I wasn’t able to ever accomplish any of these feats, as at least it’s a failing on my part as a player. It would be far more satsifying if by chance I was able to do it. You know, it’s a game— success should feel like “Wow, I did it”, as opposed to “It’s finally over, oh my there’s still more”

I am just missing one more time gated material (please remove this, really— it serves no purpose. I really could care less if someone crafts 20 while I craft 1. ) from crafting my first ascended weapon and have enough for a 2nd, but since I have to learn more than one craft, it’s going to take a while more. Just something else other than grind+ would be more motivating.

Vertical Progression + Nonexistent drop rates = Terrible.

At least give us the delusion they may one day pop from a chest. Yes, I know they technically can, but sometimes it snows in Hell too.

The drop rates need to be boosted, since most of the stat combinations in the game are pretty useless. So even if an ascended lands, it is more likely less useful than the exotic you may be carrying for your build.

Are we the villain? [SBI]

It’s because SBI had a lot of transfers that were trying to bandwagon on to the top of silver, which failed because the leagues changed; that’s where a lot of the trash talkers came from. Meanwhile, people continue to blame us just because A-net thought that 5-7 weeks of unfair matchups was a good idea, and they’re really just taking it out on us.

On the battlefield, it’s true that the server prefers zerg stuff and runs around in a disorganized mess. Nobody’s gonna deny that, but once again, that’s just a flaw of the game mode itself. We are quite bad as a whole, honestly— I can click the next dozen people in front of me to find no food buff although that may just be a pug thing. If we’re lucky, we’ll have 3 people granting group swiftness. The running joke from a few of our longterm rivals is that you can pretty beat SBI by leaving Stonemist and some random sentries to them, with about 3 guys leading away each zerg. This isn’t a knock at my server mates— note the “we”—, but it seems people think that SBI has won via coverage and not skill, but I think that’s unfair hate and you just have to step away from the delusion that PPT = skill, really, who believes that?

So SBI failed to live up to the “hype”, but honestly since the hype was started by a bunch of people that don’t matter and aren’t even on the server, it’s overblown nonsense. You can just tell by the loads of stalkers that wander into our matchup threads wondering when the great SBI will lose and implode. Except SBI has imploded before (in fact, SBI made the Kaineng bandwagon occur), but stuff like facts aren’t that dramatic and would be ignored.

There’s a lot of trash talkers and excuse makers especially as of last week, but it’s really no diffrent from any other server, and there’s no point in judging a server by its PvF’ers since most of them don’t actually play the game but ride off other people’s accomplishments. And to be fair, not everyone that transferred to this server is a huge kitten, just the ones looking for easy wins.
