For the millionth time, that is Zhaitan.
No it’s not. It’s got branches and roots all over it and it’s using the generic Tequatl model. But if the plants are to symbolize anything, it has nothing to do with Risen.
It has been explained before that this is in the dream of the newborn Sylvari and everything is plants. The player has never seen a dragon, this is what they see in the dream. It’s a foreshadowing of the players wild hunt, which is to kill Zhaitan.
Exactly, heck this is why Caithe is so interested in the Sylvari player. The reason why it’s plant based is because it’s manifesting out of that area of the dream. Pardon the expression but the stuff the Dream is made of. Or at least that section.
And the devs aren’t going to give you a look at the REAL Zhaitan until the have to. Kind of like how you don’t really see Jaws or Clover, or Sauron it adds to the menace.
How is saying that the Pale Tree is a Champion of Mordremoth simple? We have NO evidence of any connection between the tree and the dragon other than that they both are connected to the plant world. Everything else is speculation at this point.
The only things we know at this point are what we saw, which is summarized in the LS journal, what we’ve been told Scarlet saw, and the little we actually know about the dragon and what we know about the Tree.
The tree is magical, to the point (as someone pointed out in another thread) of being a deity, considering she birthed an entire race. And while that’s not the GW definition of godhood, it does mark her as being a very powerful mystical being. If Dragons, as they seem to be, are elemental forces, then Mordremoth would be drawn to the Tree being she’s of his element. To a lesser extent he’d also be drawn to her children, but that’s another discussion.
If the dragons are intelligent, which I’m not sure pans out from everything I’ve managed to see in the PS, then Modremoth would go after the tree in order to control it and through it the Sylvari.
The reference to plant creatures and other seeds is vague, and doesn’t really prove or disprove anything, but considering in one of the Sylvari PS there’s mention of another possible Tree, and Sylvari who may have come from that tree was neither evil nor in any service to anything, in fact the Nightmare Court was trying to corrupt him tends to make me think that the idea of her being a servant of the Dragon is an iffy proposition. (sorry I tried 5 times to use the tag, but it wouldn’t work)
Of course, I’d like to see something different, not Glint’s story rehashed. Not that Glint’s story wasn’t good, but let’s see what else the writers can do. But for right now, it’s best to take what we do know for certain then go from there. We know that the Pale Tree was at the center of the arrangement of the six dragon energy spheres, we know that the spheres broke from the arrangement but only one of them attacked the tree, and there seemed to be either a corruption or destruction at that point.
We know that Scarlet had a someone extended version of this sequence with some Sylvari being born and some withering and dying. The vines she saw, I believe, were just her mind’s way of comprehending what she was seeing. But either way, it’s an attack and it looks as if it has the potential to be devastating.
That’s the point where we should go forward from. These are the things that the devs have specifically highlighted at the moment.
And now I’ll make reference to another device, this time literary, we need to be looking for Chekov’s gun. “If the gun is on the wall in the first act, it should be used by the third” or what specific pieces are they giving us now that are foreshadowing.
One of the reasons I’m leery of the Champion Theory is that they would have highlighted her birth in some form early on. It would have been easy to have it in one of Scar’s journals. They may bring this up in the next episode, but until then, the fact that she’s magical, and her kids are magical and all plant based would make her a target alone.
Though, there is ONE thing. Why did those Nightmare Courtiers join Scarlet in the Toxic Alliance? I mean it could have been just a cool device to bring in known bad guys… Just sayin’

i would have to disagree with OP. having one mechanic to work around makes this a “teaching moment” that has been long overdue in this game. so much of the game is just run up to mob/boss and AA til its dead (because there are so many ways to “skin the cat”). Anet devs realize the main player base has been trained poorly by world bosses and melee stacking….so they are retraining the general masses through the LS (especially with the new mordrem mobs)…………kudos.
Teaching what? Retrain? What are they retraining? This is supposed to be a fun game, and it’s not supposed to be played in any one mode. Giving several intelligent options in order to overcome obstacles, ones that give the player agency in the fight, are better than being depended on a kludge system of slow moving escort quests through minefields.
I hate this kind of talk, it stinks of elitism. It’s a game, it’s supposed to be fun. people should be able to play their own way at their own pace, and not how any one person thinks it should be this way only. Options are good things, intelligent options even better.
And help us, an Asuran teenager at that. Can you think of a worse combination to end up in Scarlet’s lab, or her machine???
An Asura Inquest teenager?
This is when i shut off the computer and run screaming into the night… Only to be caught and eaten by the Risen waiting off screen.
Occum’s Razor: the simplest answer is usually correct one (paraphrase)
Now let’s look at the plot in the simplest of terms: the new dragon’s sphere is plants. The Pale Tree is a huge magical plant with magical plant “children” aka the Sylvari. If you’re our beloved elder dragon, where would your first stop on the lunch menu be?
And Occum isn’t a movie originated ‘scientific’ principle:
Occam’s razor (also written as Ockham’s razor and in Latin lex parsimoniae) is a principle of parsimony, economy, or succinctness used in problem-solving devised by William of Ockham (c. 1287–1347). It states that among competing hypotheses, the one with the fewest assumptions should be selected. Other, more complicated solutions may ultimately prove correct, but—in the absence of certainty—the fewer assumptions that are made, the better.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occam%27s_razor
I figured using the Occam’s Razor logic device was probably less… inflammatory than the other way I could have stated it: the KISS principle.

I find this whole conversation funny since the AC Unity flap opened up a very important conversation about representation in gaming.
Okay, this is silly. Nobody ripped anybody off.
However, with the machine, I do find the ME references coming from the peanut gallery fun, since I do love ME, and my Xbox is in the shop… Must get Mass Effect fix, even if from a twisted an tortured route.
How about we go Occum’s Razor and say that Mordy wants the Pale Tree as a source of probably one of the biggest magical feats in Tyria’s recent history: birthing an entire race. Considering they happen to be plants, which is our dear dragon’s home ground, of course he’s going to want to get his vines into them.
Okay, the Elder Dragons are really Archdemons…. and anybody who understands what I’m talking about knows what THAT means.
Orr was just a setback!
Anyway, watched the cinematic again, and it does look like art deco vines from the underworld after Mordy attacks.
Taimi suffers from a huge case of “teen invincibility syndrome”. We’ve all see it, heck the majority of us probably have been through that phase, the believe we can do stupid stuff and not get hurt/killed or in trouble.
I used to live in the north suburbs of Chicago, and there’s a road called Sheridan Road which follows the curves of Lake Michigan. It’s a popular place for teenagers to go at night and take the turns at the highest speed they can manage. I can’t tell you how many accidents and tickets come out of that one stretch of road, just because of teen invincibility syndrome. That’s Taimi to a tee, and it doesn’t help that she is intelligent and thinks that’s all she needs. She doesn’t understand yet the difference between knowledge and experience.
Very interesting you say this. It reminded me of an article I had read in National Geographic about the teenage brain. It explains a lot even if it doesn’t make one feel any better about teen behavior…
http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2011/10/teenage-brains/dobbs-text
Teens often value reward over risk and may do risky things in order to achieve that reward. I see Taimi as doing just that. She acknowledges there is a risk but finds the ultimate reward worth taking that risk. I will be interested in following her story as I find her a very interesting character. Asurans have a big ego and she is no different.
It’s an interesting article. I studied developmental psychology in college, many moons ago, so they were just touching on these subjects.
And you’re right about Taimi. She really does remind me of a teen. And help us, an Asuran teenager at that. Can you think of a worse combination to end up in Scarlet’s lab, or her machine???
Ariella, Guardian should be one of the easier classes to do this with. I’ll have to try it on my Guard to see. I’d say this is a build or lack of DPS issue making this fight overly long for you. GS should be a great weapon choice. I’d go Hammer myself with it having a punt, protection, good DPS, and crowd control. Symbol healing trait should help keep the minion alive as well.
I got it with Staff, some buffs I’d been saving for a rainy day, finally being able to time the barrier so it cut off the wolves from following the blessed minions, and getting rid of those vines was a godsend.
For the fight itself, you are supposed to be a team. More so, Jory and Kasmeer should actually be considered friends. They are calling out how they can aide YOU in getting to the Boss in the dialogue. It sounds like the difficulty and duration of the fight created frustration, which lead to this feeling of being a henchman.
The calling out didn’t bother me as much as we’re being funneled through this one mechanic. Even after I got the patterns it was still a frustrating thing having to watch those blasted minions, keep them alive. I would much rather be the one who was dealing the the barrier myself. Rather than a minion, Jory could have given me some poison that would have done the same, or Kas giving me a globe that had chaos magic that would have disrupted it. The fact that the minions spawned so far from where the characters come in, and that they’re slower than a glacier, where those hounds are fast (I saw in another thread in the bug forum that it seems like they’re going too fast, but YMMV). I would have rather had more options on how to take the thing down.
As I said though, taking out those vines made things much easier. Thank you to whomever mention that. Flipping vines!
Still doesn’t change the basic point active vs. passive on dealing with the shields, giving more than one option to take things like that down.

If the point of the mission is to fight a boss enemy, I don’t expect to have to be dependent on a slow moving escort quest to be able to take down a defense for a few seconds in which I have to inflict as much damage as I can then start all over again.
You obviously haven’t played GW1 with heroes or henchies
Boy did they know how to kitten up a mission or quest. And the game wasn’t as forgiving as GW2 – if you fail a condition it often meant you had to replay the whole mission
Actually, that’s why I stopped playing GW 1, it drove me absolutely nuts at times. Urge to strangle rising…
So what’s the problem again?
That 11 different people replied to the title of this thread without actually reading the OP.
I don’t really agree with the OP though, a mission is a mission despite the mechanics you have to work under.
Am I get the post wrong?
Isn’t the OP complaining about the AP being too difficult to achieved?
My post is to disprove him because I find it quite simple and easy as long as you have some good range dps. (I’m sure MANY OTHER CLASSES have higher range dps than warrior yknow.)
First of all, I’m a her, second of all, it’s not about hard it’s about a frustrating mechanic that slows the pace of the fight down, and if the ONLY option to take the shield down.
I don’t want to be chained to an escort quest through, what is for all intents and purposes, a mine field while trying to pull a mob away from the escort. I find it annoying in the extreme. I also find it annoying that the spawns are all the way across the battle field rather than spawning near Jory, which would make more sense.
Aerin was hard, and at times frustrating too, but the mechanics for his shield didn’t have me depend on something like the bone minion. The crystals were easy to acquire, watch the pulse rate then hit him. Then it’s back to whatever style of combat you’re using, either chasing him from butte to butte or watching for him to centralize and hitting him there.
Again my biggest complaint is that there’s only ONE way to take the shield down, and it slows the fight.
I’m playing a guard using staff/greatsword (switch to the latter for the hold and pull in order to TRY and get the wolves off, though they still can jump at the minions even when chained) and I don’t see my DPS on staff doing all that great.
And no, I’m not all “geared up” nor am I a pvp or wvw player. I play for the story, not huge combats, which is one of the reasons I LOVE this game.
I mean how can you not feel frustrated when you get the thing half way down, die, and on the way back from checkpoint, not only are the characters who are supposed to be supporting you gone, but the kitten thing has regen to full strength. It was after that I said to hell with it.
Hard can be fun, hard can make you think and look for patterns you can exploit to the best advantage. This isn’t hard, it’s limiting and frustrating. The bug with Kass breaks the pattern because there isn’t the support mechanism that’s supposed to deflect more spore damage from the minion as it makes its run. I have yet to be able to pull a wolf away from the minion and keep it focused on me, well until the minion dies then it’s on me like crazy.
Even if, say, Anet pulled back a little on the boss’ spore attack, it’s still be frustrating as hell because it’s still an escort quest in the middle of a boss battle. The minions are slow, ponderous and lengthen the fight for no real good reason except for Anet to try something new.
It comes down to wanting to have more control over the battle. To have a number of options to choose and execute to overcome obstacles. If Anet wants to having something outside the usual skills to take down something like this barrier, fine, but give me control over when and how to deploy it. That’s part of my job as the hero of this little story.
I don’t understand why this is so difficult for people to get. I want a better managed, better paced combat.
I also realize that Anet isn’t going to change anything in this release but I’m hoping the devs will see this and take what I’ve pointed out into consideration. Better to give the player choices than limit them.
Thought I do hope they fix the Kass and Jory bug, that’s just a bloody headache.
So what’s the problem again?

I don’t see where there’s anything fun about this, or how it’s tactical. It’s the combat equivalent of Trahearne.
And yes, I’m aware the wolves spawn the the same place. I’ve used the tactic, but it doesn’t make it any less obnoxious.
Tactical would be say using the siege equipment in a certain way (specific ammo) to break the shield down, then half way in be able to go into the fight, still defending against its attacks, but the shields would be down. Or if the HAVE to have the iconics doing something like the minions, make it something we have to carry to blow the shield. Forces the player to dodge and maneuver in order to get to the target.
People keep saying that this is to keep from “bad players” from bashing their way through the fight. You’re still bashing, just have to bash and hope the thing you’re escorting gets there and then bash hard and hope the thresher’s shield doesn’t comeback up fast.
(edited by Ariella Goldstein.3562)
I know that a lot of speculation has Jory going dark, but remember she’s pretty much a film noir detective, she already IS dark. Noir as a genre is not a happy place. Characters, even “heroes”, tend to be very flawed. The Maltese Falcon is a really good example of this. They may walk her further down that road, but I doubt she’ll ever become what we’d consider evil.
Okay, the complete lack of agency in this fight makes me want to scream. Being completely dependent on an NPC’s mechanic. Actually, if at least Jory’s first minion were to spawn somewhere by the player rather than on the other side of the field, I’d consider it a victory.
I do however think that Anet needs to consider having multiple ways of taking things like the shield on the Thresher down because depending on one of the iconic NPCs to do so, really relegates the player to henchman status even more than certain story choices, which people have mentioned, do. Give those options cooldown so you can’t spam just one, but multiple options to get the job done. And if we are going in with the Iconics, their best contribution is support.
Do I have to log on to each individual character on my account? Or is just logging in on my Guardian or w/e good enough for the entire account.
According to what we’ve been told, logging in will give your account access, but your alts have to be 80 to play it.
Taimi is a liability. I would remove her at the first chance I got if it were actually up to my character.
She’s definitely a loose cannon, but she’s also pretty darn useful. She just needs constant adult supervision . . . and possible a leash.
Having sudden flashbacks to the Buttons and Mindy skits from Animaniacs. But yes, Taimi needs one of those child leashes that were popular in the 90s. Link her to Braham. Better yet, something that’ll shut Scruffy down if she gets more that 20 or so feet from the group.
I’m going with this is what Scar saw, and Z wasn’t dead at the time. Just me though. But does our character get an innate understanding of the dragons after this, driven into their mind by a… wait, wrong game.
But we didn’t see the same thing as her. We didn’t see a thorny vine strangling the Pale Tree, nor did we see new Sylvari being born and others withering.
I doubt we would have seen things exactly the same as Scarlet or anyone else for that matter. Whatever the Commander of the Pact saw would be different because it was being filtered through a different set of perceptions. It’s make sense that Scarlet saw vines where the Commander, who has pretty much come to think in more military terms would have seen the attack as more direct. And also saw the effect of said attack differently aka the corruption of the tree.
I just wish this mechanic wasn’t purely based on needing an outside source to break the shield. At least Aerin you broke through yourself, but having to depend on the minions as the sole way of getting at the thing is frustrating. Feels less like a boss fight and more like the biggest pain in the butt escort quest at times.
And, while tempting to blame stomping a quaggan, it’s important to remember that correlation is not causation.
Thank you, Duckideva. I for one needed that. So I also know that Anet has said they’re working on it, but what exactly can they do in response? And that IPViking is just trippy
It is, been watching it for the better part of the afternoon, and some massive attacks that happened coincided with times that my friends started dropping like flies off the server.
Now, of course not every single person is being affected—you have your anomalies and people that are getting lucky by not being on a “pipeline” being affected (in layman’s terms). Kudos to them.
As for the people that ARE being affected, well. ANet is working on figuring out a solution/defense/how to get it to stop, but I think it’ll take some time, as they’re not the only ones being affected by these spikes. They have to contact outside people and their service providers, get them on board and figure out a solution with them. So they have to wait a little like we do in some aspects.
Generally sucks all around.
Agreed. More the writer in me was just wondering what a company could do in a situation like this… And I’m remembering the attack that took down the SOE network and ALL their MMOs plus the PS3 network a few years back. And this is where I start twitching…
I hope they can fix it soon. And I hope they get enough data to figure out who is doing this. I’ll buy a round in the Reach for everyone if Anet does.
Well in terms of blocking the servers/hosts that have already attacked, sure, they can do everything in the world. But a good DDoS hack is going to be pushing from continuously unique and irrelevant hosts and servers. Therefore, the only way to block is to tigger an auto kick if you try connect a certain # of times is a certain # of seconds (milliseconds). It’s hard to allow everything to be public, but at the same time shut down unique ips.
At the same time, I’m starting to think my quaggan stomp started this whole worldwide war on the internet
I like that idea. Quaggan stomp.
Been watching Viking again. It’s so bad that even they are freezing up trying to keep up with the rate of attacks. Santa Ana, San Rafael, Kirksville and Seattle are the cities I’m seeing under major attack. Considering going to play DA2 until this is over, but honestly I’d miss GW.
I’m going with this is what Scar saw, and Z wasn’t dead at the time. Just me though. But does our character get an innate understanding of the dragons after this, driven into their mind by a… wait, wrong game.
Gummy, the story doesn’t go away after the two weeks because of the new mechanic. All you have to do is log in during the two weeks to get the chapter and then it’s open season. This is how you can replay the LS on characters who aren’t level 80 yet when they reach that point.
And, while tempting to blame stomping a quaggan, it’s important to remember that correlation is not causation.

Lash, this isn’t something they can fix. It’s an external attack DDoS.
Considering a) the name was probably chosen well before the Costa Concordia salvage operation began yesterday b) the actual sinking of the ship happened in 2012, i doubt Anet was even thinking about any association.
Make the personal story piece of L2 solo, or voluntary group.
Since we’re moving back to personal stories, more interaction with the new NPCs from L1.
And like the original personal stories have NPCs either base on race or class or order (race or order would be easier) as your supporters.
I liked the fact that you had the feeling of having friends along the way, especially with the mentors in the orders.
Generally more story, less just beat up the bad guy. Instances that are more like some of the hearts, where you’re doing something useful but other than fighting.
I’m not expecting full out expansion type content like new maps or such, but these smaller tweaks would fit well with what you’ve establish in the original game.
I’ll admit I was expecting a little bit more than just a wall paper. It would have been nice to get a couple more hints as to what’s coming next aka the actual legacy…
I’m unsure why the snark. Is there anything wrong with the idea that lower level characters might wish to participate in non-festival events in the living world, which is what we are discussing, not the general content of GW2 which has pretty much been there since day one.
I’m not saying level 80s should have no new content, but there has to be a better way to balance the content so that lower level characters don’t miss out on the entire experience. This is called living world for a reason, which means everyone should be able to be involved on at least some level, even if for lower level characters its tangential quests that still allow them to be a part of the story. I don’t see that as a large threat to any level 80.
Okay to be blunt, is there anything available for lower level characters to take part in? I don’t mind adding high level content, but it would be nice to see more low to mid level content without it being festival based.
While I’m enjoying the recent living world content, I am concerned that those of us who have lower level characters (my highest is 62) might not get a chance to participate. Anyone have any answers for that? Thanks
Finally, all these refugees keep telling me that, “raven told me you were coming.” What I don’t get is why didn’t raven tell them to get out before this disaster struck? Why is he telling them useless things like my daily schedule. Kinda sounds like raven is a kitten. Maybe raven is behind all this… …. maybe …
What I’ve seen of Raven seems to follow some Native American traditions where Raven is a messenger. Also, the Ravens of Odin Huginn and Muninn (thought and memory) go throughout the world and deliver news back to Odin, so it’s possible the Raven doesn’t have foresight into events as much as a deliverer of knowledge.
I realize that F&F is just getting started, but I would have liked to have seen more story build up in the prelude. The refugee trail and the vents seemed a little disjointed to me, and the threat didn’t feel eminent. So if I might suggest that maybe next time build up the threat factor a bit more the next time so that when the next chapter breaks it still feels fresh and immediate.
I guess I’m just wondering what kind of schedule we’re looking at for the prelude. I figure it will run most of February, maybe into the beginning of March, but my concern it that if there’s too much daylight between content pieces and the unfortunate seeming lack of organization on keeping players informed when it started, F&F might not come off well.
Now I’m hoping this is not the case, as the plot looks interesting and I want to see the story play out. So what I’m hoping is for two things: A) Content added once a week to build momentum
mail updates in game if only to get PCs to check with the heralds.
Okay, feel free to beat me bloody
My issue is time. It’s hard for me to do pick up groups because I have two daughters who usually are clamoring for my attention. I am going to pick up GW2 as a gift for my husband so we can play together, so I was just hoping We’d be able to manage dungeons together.
Well, two manning it is something that requires geared/experienced players who understand their builds and what abilities to use for the fights. Starting off like this w/ GW2 is probably not possible. You’ll need to run it to get a bit of your gear and to understand the strategies and what not first. Even then, you have to remember that 2 manning it takes significantly longer. So, if your children are clamoring for your attention, you may not have the time that would be needed.
Just my 2 cents.
Understood, We have time at night, though sometimes the girls are up after their bedtime no matter what we do. I guess it’s just my frustration with loving MMOs and not being able to get all of the story because I’ve got to devote time to the little ones. Not a terrible frustration, but I like knowing all the story.

coming from that other game, I’m used to dungeons being five people, so I’m curious as to the recommended and lowest possible number for AC. Thanks, Ariella
Magnetron, it’s not that I’m expecting dragons flying all over the place, I just wish there’d been a little more in-game information as to where the Prelude started. Just a little bit more organized in getting that information to players.
I’ve never noticed that. Money however…
Thank you Ace
Anyone know where to begin the prelude?
Boy did they know how to kitten up a mission or quest. And the game wasn’t as forgiving as GW2 – if you fail a condition it often meant you had to replay the whole mission
