I will concede that it is entirely possible, though unlikely in my opinion, that Anet spokespersons were not aware of the content of the company’s marketing efforts.

. . . said best stats not being remotely necessary to playing roughly 80% of the game

Not necessarily accurate but sure lets say, for the sake of argument, that for most people and for the most part ascended gear is not necessary. I did not claim that the gear was necessary.

, but hey why quibble over most of the game being completely able to be handled in greens when we can continue the fiction of Ascended being “necessary” because it’s best-in-slot?

Which is of course completely irrelevant to the point that the claim was made and is not true. If I promise to give someone a hundred dollars to buy groceries then choose to not follow through on my promise the fact that the stated recipient does not need my money to buy groceries does not make my statement true.

Which is demonstrably false. Ask anyone who has a good palate.

Which merely proves that the individual with a supposedly, “good palate,” has an opinion about McDonalds. Again, opinion.

Not going to search out the links again, but:

It was stated before launch that it was expected that we would have BiS gear by level 80.

It was subsequently stated, post launch, that it was never intended for us to have BiS gear that fast.

Changing their mind by saying, “we have determined that our original intention is not going to meet the needs of the game or the player base,” is one thing. To deny that the first statement was ever true means that either the first statement was a lie or the second one is.

We were told that grind would be reserved for cosmetics but not for stats.

The best stats are now gated behind grind.

“McDonalds is delicious,” isn’t a falsehood, its an opinion.

Can’t say I’ve ever really heard it argued either way about Kormir stealing/not stealing anything from players in NF.

I have, however, seen blatant falsehoods stated as truth by company reps. Maliciously ? Probably not. I am sure the goal was not malice but rather self interest.

If they do communicate they’re lying.

Probably not as much of an issue if they communicated better. Unfortunately they now have a reputation for being less than honest in the eyes of some portion of both their own playerbase and the gaming/MMO community at large.

One’s statements are far more likely to be scrutinized closely, and have inconsistencies called out for possible dishonesty, if one has demonstrated dishonesty in the past.

wouldnt that actually be unnatural?
When you go in a fight your main aim is to kill your opponent why would you want to be kitten in doing that?

Your main aim is not to necessarily to kill your opponent, even if such is the most effective way to achieve your true main objective.

Not every member of a military, even a military at war, is directly charged with inflicting casualties on an enemy force. Quite the contrary.

Someone mentioned this before, a combat medic isn’t issued with a knife instead of a gun just cause he has the ability to heal and thats an important point. Like wise a soldier may not be an awesome medic but can still do first aid if needs be.

Medics are armed for defense of self or their charges. He is armed with a gun primarily because not everyone, including signatories, abides by the Geneva convention regarding the sanctity of medical personnel.

Thing is Trinity works by putting limitations in place not by making roles more powerful. There is a reason you never see 3 tanks and 2 healers. or 3 healers a tank and a dps.

Never is an awfully long time. I have seen just what you describe in another game where the design allows for even more hybrid character building than we see here.

DPS is always king cause well thats what a fight is always about primarily.

Don’t really agree. In GW2 yes. Other games ? Not as much. DPS are a dime a dozen in plenty of other games. Healers and tanks are kings there. Personally I prefer to play a blend of DPS and soft control (GW1 Interrupt ranger for the win) ankitten ot particularly bothered that in GW2 control or support as full on specializations are not needed. I do see how others might feel otherwise.

When Anet speaks of a new trinity, where trinity in MMOs has traditionally been a reference to role specialization, of DPS, control, and support, it gives the impression that their new trinity are three role specializations. Such is not the case.

Will Anet ever make Non-DPS role important?

I think part of the disconnect here is that some people are arguing for non DPS roles while others are arguing that non DPS abilities are available. Sure control and support are present, and used, in GW2, but generally (?) not as roles in a group. The character with a blind, knock, block, reflect, water field, whatever is a DPS role, primarily, who has some control and/or support ability in his build.

Other people seem to be looking to have a character for whom DPS is not a significant function of their build while focusing on support and/or control be as useful to the party as a DPS focused character who carries some support/control as secondary elements of their build.

The pastry shop owner posted his menu in advance of the shop’s grand opening and then charged a cover fee for entering the shop. Some of the customers were dismayed to find that what had been listed as on the menu before the shop opened was not actually available upon paying to enter the shop. Other customers were disappointed to find that what they had paid for was removed from the menu, from their plates actually, after they had paid. Still the shop owner hinted at addressing the concerns of those upset by some of his business practices and changes to the menu so those who had come because they had very positive experiences with the shop owner’s previous business waited.

Question on this particular macro legality.

I am not sure that I agree that there is an objective point of view when discussing quality of story.

I personally enjoyed aspects of GW1’s story. I enjoyed aspects of GW2’s story. I am not fond of Trahearne, but really liked the whole concept of bringing multiple orders with differing views on how to fight the great evil together.

I don’t think that either game is an example of great storytelling.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Ashen.2907

Traditional end games tend to make the community more competive rather than cooperative. I wanted a cooperative non-competitive PvE experience to enjoy with friends. This game offers that.

At least in the open world content I play GW2 is far more competitive than cooperative. Helping another player means potentially not getting credit, or at least not full credit, for the events I play. The game punishes me for stopping my DPS to rezz another player. Conversely the game will reward me for ignoring players who need my assistance in order to maintain maximum possible damage output.

It didn’t used to be like this…or at least not to this degree. I think that the Megaserver is a net gain for the game, but it needs tweaks to prevent some of the current situations where it makes the PvE game more competitive and less cooperative.

Warrior/Necro will work just fine. You will likely find yourself focusing on the Warrior skills because you may not have sufficient energy to cast many Necro spells.

And Dervish was one of the easier classes for a new player in my experience. It is one of the classes that we often recommended for a new player’s first character back when my guild/alliance were active.

Well, privilege is probably more accurate than, “right,” but you are correct, these forums are here, in part, for people to discuss their views, including disappointment, on aspects of the game. I could handle the outcome being different if I was given a good reason why. If there was a defect with your car shared by other people and you had the option to request a refund and you did at the same time as your friend and he recieved a refund, but instead of giving you one they simple said sorry we can’t give you a refund or tell you why… well you might understand our frustration.

There is no defect in this situation. The item you purchased still functions as it did when you purchased it. In your example I would be owed some form of compensation for the defect. A company’s refusal to offer one would be a breach of the purchase contract (unless the item was sold, “as is.”). Whether or not they offered a refund to anyone else who purchased the car would have no bearing on the company owing me a refund. The functionality of someone else’s car is irrelevant to my interaction and my purchase contract with the car maker.

Anet does not owe you a reason why. Their interactions with a customer that is not you are between them and that customer.

The quality of story or game design elements is subjective.

Mea culpa Ashen. I obviously took this wrong.

I was just trying to suggest that more seasoned players help new players out who may not know proper builds and the skills that each class has at their disposal. The example that Danikat gave so eloquently, demonstrated the best method of informing newer, less experienced players.

I completely agree that seasoned players should (in the sense that it would be a good thing to do) help less knowledgeable/experienced players. Such is an important part of the sense of community in an MMO. It is one of my favorite aspects of playing GW1 and CO.

GW 2 for kids

Ashen.2907

I think if the kid is mature enough to play the game then let them, but monitor their game play also find a good family friendly guild with a strict code of conduct I was in one of these types of guilds in GW1 they had strict language rules in guild chat and in TeamSpeak most of the kids that played only played when one or more of their parents were on. Also teach the kid to have good gaming manners, there are a lot of kids on these games that shouldn’t be on because they have real bad manners and just plain rude.

Well said.

My guild and alliance in GW1 had similar rules for guild/alliance/ventrillo chat. We did include a, “Pirate Speak,” channel in Vent for those who couldn’t control themselves or just wanted to be able to speak freely.

These days many gamers are old enough to have kids that want to or already do game as well.

Applying the same or similar guidance that one would use to protect their children in any other venue seems like the way to go IMO.

I feel that the storytelling is about on a par with old cartoons. He-Man, Dungeons and Dragons, Superfriends, and so on. The occasional element adds a bit of maturity in my opinion, but childish does not seem an inaccurate description to me.

As to presentation of the lore, a bit more in game discovery, perhaps using POI as mentioned above, would be nice. Characters do not have the option to use Google to find stories posted on the internet so I don’t think that such is a good approach to presenting lore.

I think most of the people using the world childish are probably young. There are a lot of older people in my guild who don’t think the story is childish at all.

Totally agree. If old people in your guild don’t think its childish then most who do must be kids. ; P

I am not sure that I believe that compensation of any sort is owed in a situation of this sort. Player A bought item(s) X. Item X continues to function. Player A retains possession of item X.

If player A still has what he paid for then why is he somehow being mistreated by not receiving further compensation ?

If I buy a computer and a year later it goes on sale am I owed a refund, upgrade, or some other form of recompense ?

As to some people reportedly receiving some form of compensation and others not…

Every commercial transaction between a player and Anet is between that player and Anet on a case by case basis. We as players are not siblings, receiving bowls of ice cream from a parent, arguing over who got the biggest scoop. What happens between Anet and a customer that is not me in a situation of this sort that is not really my business in my opinion.

I think that players kicking or excluding others from groups is a bit rude, but within their right to play with whomever they choose, except when you are talking about elite content. I think it is reasonable to expect members of the group to be using builds, gear, etc appropriate to the content for elite missions, raids, etc.

As to stealth, and surviving because of it:

If there are 5 people in the group.
If the opposition, as a group, does 1000 damage.
Each member might take 200 damage.

If one member of the group is not targetable then the remaining members might face 250 damage each.

Yes stealth increases your survivability…by shunting damage to the rest of the group.

GW2 is not a physics text book.

Anet chose a term (Dynamic Event), in many ways using it as a proper noun, to refer to the fact that many of GW2’s quests are implemented in a somewhat different way than similar quests in many other MMOs.

Some of GW2’s dynamic events are not all that different than other games’ static quests. Some play very differently. Are they exactly what Anet said they would be ? Not completely in my opinion. Permanently change the world doesn’t happen, but it was said.

Were they more interesting when they were new, of course. Thats true of most MMO content IMO. When I enter a zone I know, for the most part, what’s going on, what is happening, what I’ll be doing, and so on. Fia needs to study those gorillas after all.

Personally I think a mix of the big Dynamic Events (note the capitalization) and old fashioned quests (which can be done in a manner that really contributes to a game/zone’s story) would be nice.

Elite farming in GW1 was fun. This is much less fun. I’m not sure exactly why. It seems to be more than one factor in play making it less fun.

A couple of things (IMO):

1) It might be less fun because it was added so late in the game’s life. Taking something away and then asking people to earn it back is very different that providing something for people to earn in the first place. I know that existing characters are grandfathered in, but people creating new characters have the experience of how it was handled previously to compare. The previous iteration of the trait system created an expectation of what was normal.

2) You could take a non elite skill in place of an elite in GW1. Not having capped a trait in GW2 might mean having an empty spot in your build.

Hasn’t affected me. Probably won’t that much. But I see why others might be unhappy.

But in Guild Wars 1, elites were much much more important and you were often seriously gimping yourself without an elite. Sure you could take a normal skill, but it meant nothing.

Think of builds made around discord, barrage, signet of spirits, unyielding aura…hell the builds were named after the elites.

Just because you could throw an inconsequential 8th skill in your bar, didn’t mean you weren’t seriously disadvantaged by doing so.

I absolutely agree that an Elite was usually the cornerstone of your build. I wish elites in GW2 were a bit more important in that way.

But non-elite does not mean “inconsequential.” If it did then every build would have 7 inconsequential skills. The two most important skills on my bar were not elites…rez and d-shot. If any skill on one’s bar was truly inconsequential it said more about the player than about the skill in my opinion.

Heck, there was a period of time when I frequently chose to carry cap-sig because I didn’t like the idea of looking up bosses on wiki and wanted to be prepped in case I saw one of my class(es). That 8th slot was filled with a skill that was highly unlikely to be used, but was still better than having nothing in the slot.

At this rate...a big let down.

Against something with alot of health like a boss, you’ll want to rez but only if it’s safe. If not safe leave them to die.

If dead, you should pretty much always just finish the fight. If they’re absolutely necessary, you could attempt to kite the boss away while someone rezzes the dead necessity

Or is it better to use a disclaimer legend like that in every single post ?
1. always always means “most of the time”

What gets old is people attempting to strengthen their position by claiming that, “everyone,” does as they say or agrees with them or likes what they like, and so on in order to discredit others who have a differing opinion, or to distort the facts of the matter at hand.

That is the only quote I could find (admittedly I did not spend hours searching) with a quote referencing new tiers of gear. It does not state that there will not be new tiers.

Were Ursan and PI popular skills ? Of course they were, but claiming that everyone used or relied on them is ludicrous.

No, its evident now you were not active in GW1 during that time. Ursan Blessing was used everywhere, from DoA to FoW/UW, all the way to solo elite mission clears. Other metas at the time, such kitten, almost went defunct.

Evolution is not revolution. Evolution is a slow, gradual change. Anet has made slow, gradual changes to the model that MMOs have been working on for years. Innovation has a certain connotation. I certainly know what I meant better than you do.

I made no comment about what you meant. I commented on what you said. If the two are not the same…

I tend to think that Anet were/are innovative. I think that they are, or at least are trying to be, revolutionary in their development of GW2. I do think that describing them as revolutionary and then arguing that you didn’t use the word revolutionary, similarly with innovative, is a bit odd in my opinion.

Claiming that other people are exaggerating to make a point while exaggerating to make a point is similarly a bit off in my opinion.

Claiming that you are just trying to defend the game against unfair arguments and the like while inventing facts to support your position is another one of those a bit off things in my opinion.

Feel free to bow out if you like. Perhaps someone will come in to defend the game factually, based on its merits, rather than blatantly making things up.

I wouldn’t mind this even though it would be completely infuriating. This would encourage people to be more social and would give them more reason to be loyal to their guild, even if everyone is a bit bloodthirsty.

I just don’t see it working out that way. People in smaller, less experienced guilds, or guilds formed for the sake of RP would get the short end of the stick. RP guilds especially, because there are some decent spots outside of the cities that would be a magnet for people looking for easy kills.

Smaller, less tight knit groups would just disband or leave the game.

Honest question here, why would RP guilds choose to transfer to a PvP server ?

At this rate...a big let down.

You may not like what Anet has done, but no one else has come close to doing something similar. It’s why I’m here.

Guild Wars 2, and I’ve said this before, is evolutionary, not revolutionary. It’s a half-step forward. But compared to what the rest of the industry has been doing for the last eight years, it might as well be revolutionary.

A claim that Anet is doing things that no one else has come close to doing is a claim that they are being revolutionary. It is also a claim that they are innovating or are innovative.

I think you exaagerate to make points

Ahem…

Everyone says, even people who agree with you, that this game is the best of a sorry lot.

Totally not an exaggeration right ?

I’m responding to what I see are unfair comments.

But that is not all that you are doing…

Everyone says, even people who agree with you, that this game is the best of a sorry lot.

You are putting words in other people’s mouths to a far greater degree than anyone is doing with you regarding the use of the word innovate rather than its definition.
