Hey guys just letting you know that we’re still looking into this as the general workarounds do not seem to be resolving the issue for all players and so we’re having to dig a little further to get to the root of the cause of this issue.
We appreciate your patience!
@ Fynthix -
Since the new drivers didn’t do the trick I would like to rule out the possibility that there is another program interfering with the game connection. To do this, we use a Windows command called “MSCONFIG.”
Please note: this command will not uninstall any applications from your computer. All MSCONFIG does is prevent these applications from automatically starting when Windows boots up.
To do this:
1. Press and hold the Windows key and then hit the R key. This should bring up the Run dialog box.
2. Type “MSCONFIG” without the quotes, and click “OK.” This should open the System Configuration Utility.
3. Click on the “Services” tab and check the “Hide All Microsoft Services” check box near the bottom, then click the “Disable All” button. (You MUST click “Hide all Microsoft Services”)
4. Next go to the “Startup” tab and click the “Disable All” button.
5. Once these items are all disabled, click the “OK” button and you will get a prompt to restart your computer. Please restart your computer.
6. Once you return to Windows, please try connecting to the game again.
To reverse these settings, simply run MSCONFIG again and click “Normal Startup” on the first window labeled “General.”
Note: If you need a specific application to run with Windows but still want to use MSCONFIG, just follow the above instructions and on step 4, re-check any application you feel needs to start with Windows. Examples would be wireless connection software, mouse or keyboard applications or even security applications. Please note that security applications can often be a contributing factor to such issues. If you haven’t done so already, please also disable any Anti-virus, Firewall or other security applications for testing purposes.
Hi Chevvie -
This may be due to the use of more than one keyboard type in Windows. To resolve this, please try the following:
1. Click the “Start” button and select “Control Panel.”
2. Click “Clock, Language, and Region”
3. Click “Change keyboards or other input methods”
4. Click the “Keyboards and Languages” tab and select ’Change Keyboards."
5. Remove any non-use keyboards from the “General” tab and use only an “English (United States) keyboard service.”
Once done, try running Guild Wars 2 again.

Hi Fynthix – I did notice a couple of things within the Game Advisor report that might explain this error message that you’re receiving. Typically, despite the message, it has nothing to do with your Internet connection. Generally this is a result of another application blocking the game connection, hardware failure of some sort, or you simply need to update some drivers on your system.
That being said, let’s start with your video card drivers. This may be tricky since this appears to be an onboard video card and your processor is just under the minimum specs but you SHOULD still be able to play. I went ahead and located the updated drivers for your graphics card since it appears they are about a year out of date:
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonmob_win7-64.aspx
Please let me know if the updated drivers have any affect on the issue.

Hi Ryshken – I would recommend first updating to Service Pack 1 for Windows. You can do this by clicking the “Start” button, “All Programs” and then selecting “Windows Update.” From there I would make sure you select every critical update for your system. Secondly, I would try a clean installation of the latest Nvidia drivers:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook-win7-winvista-64bit-301.42-whql-driver.html
It is for use at your own discretion, but I might also advise trying out the latest Nvidia Beta drivers as well:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-306.02-beta-driver.html
Please let me know if these updates have any affect on the issue.
Hi Afterburner – If you are running a 32-bit OS unfortunately this does appear to be a known issue with some Nvidia cards. We do not have an ETA for a fix at the moment but this is something that is being looked into.
Thanks for the report! First, I would either disable, remove, or configure AVG to allow Gw2.exe to run since there are some compatibility issues with that particular security software.
Secondly, if it is not an application interfering with the game connection then it appears the error message may be a bit misleading. There are a few reasons why the client will not complete the installation such as out of date drivers. I noticed both your Windows and drivers could use the latest updates. I would recommend first updating Windows to Service Pack 1 and getting the latest version of your video card drivers.

Hey guys – We’re still collecting data in regards to this issue. While some players do have issues with their systems such as not meeting the minimum requirements or needing to update their video card drivers or even reseat their video cards, we recognize that some players with no issues are experiencing performance issues.
Please follow the steps below to provide us with some additional information in regards to the performance based issues:
1. Run Gw2.exe with –perfdebug as a command-line argument.
2. In the game go an area that exhibits poor performance.
3. Hit Ctrl+Shift+C to start performance profiling, this should take 15 seconds and post a message in the chat window.
4. Once it is complete it will dump a *.dat file into a “Profiles” folder located in the same directory as the local.dat file. This should also post a message in the chat window.
5. Attach the file to the thread, preferably zipped to cut down on size(4mb).

Hi DarkusVampyrus – What sort of connection method are you using to connect to the Internet? Generally players will receive this error message if they’re trying to connect through an unsupported connection method such as through a Hotspot, USB, Satellite, or tethering to a mobile device. The minimum requirements state that players will need a Broadband Internet connection in order to play Guild Wars 2.
If you have a Broadband Internet connection and are not using any of the unsupported connection methods then I’d like to collect a Game Advisor report from you. There should be a link to download the application to create the diagnostic report in one of the above posts in this thread.

I can’t say for certain… I do know that quite a few players have experienced all sorts of crash issues with that particular card and I personally would not recommend it although I cannot recommend what you should get specifically.
I can only say that before upgrading to a more powerful card that you will want to also look into upgrading your processor, motherboard, and memory otherwise you will create a bottleneck for the rest of your system. In addition, you will need to upgrade to a 64-bit operating system and may even need to look into a higher wattage power supply to handle all the new hardware.
Unfortunately simply updating your graphics card will not give you better performance in the long run since other components will need to be upgraded as well for balance.
Hey guys – Error code 42 can mean a couple of things – it can mean there is an issue with the ports, an issue with your router, security software, or simply that the servers are down. This has even been found to be an account based issue in certain situations.
Unfortunately this will vary from player to player depending on when exactly this error message is being experienced and I apologize for any frustration that may have been caused by this issue.
Part of our job in Technical Support is getting to the bottom of why you are experiencing an issue and looking to resolve it and so this will involve some troubleshooting.
That being said, I would also recommend perhaps flushing your DNS and doing a Winsock reset if this has not been tried already.
Hi Magmarrax – There have been some issues with the most recent Nvidia drivers and so the Launcher will give you this error message until you install the Beta drivers listed. This is completely at your own discretion – you do not have to install the Beta drivers if you do not wish to, however, just know that that particular error message will be there until you do.
I personally do not use the Beta drivers on my home machine, and I have this error message every time I start up the client but I haven’t (yet) had any issues using the non-beta drivers.
Hi Drargoz,
I have reviewed your Game Advisor report and it appears you are missing a very critical update for Windows 7. The latest revision of drivers from AMD.com now require Microsoft Service Pack 1 to be installed on your computer and it appears your PC does not have this installed. You can review those new requirements here: http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/AMDCatalystSoftwareSuiteVersion123ReleaseNotes.aspx
Specifically: (From AMD.com)
Notes.
When installing the AMD Catalyst driver for Windows operating system, the user must be logged on as Administrator or have Administrator rights to complete the installation of the AMD Catalyst driver.
The Catalyst driver requires Windows 7 Service Pack 1 to be installed.
In order to install this update, please visit windowsupdate.com and select all updates labeled “Important” or “Critical.” While not required, you may also want to review any updates under the label “Hardware.” Once installed, you may also need to reinstall your AMD drivers as they were installed without this update being present.

Hi Magmarrax – That doesn’t sound good… did you install the drivers directly from the link or were you attempting a clean installation? Those should be the correct drivers for your graphics card and operating system so I’m not sure why you would encounter a black screen.
You may need to uninstall the previous drivers while in Safe Mode and then run Nvidia’s auto-detect feature to locate the drivers for you: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
You will want to select “Option 2.”
I would first recommend going into your Control Panel and under “Mouse” (may need to click “View by: Large Icons”) there should be a “Pointer Options” tab which will allow you to see whether or not you have “pointer trails” enabled for display. If so, I would uncheck this.
Thanks for the report. It looks like your drivers are fairly old as they’re from 2009. I would definitely recommend updating to the newest drivers, preferably through a clean installation.
I have located the most updated drivers for your graphics card for you: http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7-winvista-32bit-301.42-whql-driver.html
Please try updating your drivers to see if this has any affect on the issue.
I’m sorry to hear you guys are experiencing this issue but I would like for you to try a command in order to resolve this issue. To do this:

Hi Fluxion – This is a pretty loaded question that can be difficult to answer. Generally before updating your video card you will also want to look into upgrading your motherboard, processor, and memory. In addition, in order to support all the new hardware you may need to look into getting a higher wattage power supply as well.
Since you have a 32-bit operating system, and plan to get a card such as the HD 7750 I would highly recommend switching to a 64-bit operating system if your motherboard will allow it and in turn also upping your RAM to go along with it as well. You will not be able to utilize this card to the best of its’ abilities without first upgrading your operating system and memory otherwise you will then create a bottleneck for the rest of your system.
While we cannot provide specific recommendations for any one brand or manufacturer, I hope at least this will give you a better idea of where to start looking.
Just checking in guys!
We are in no way blaming these performance issues on players’ systems which is exactly why we need to collect this information. This will allow us to see if we can spot any trends and issues with particular set ups and find out where people are experiencing these issues, how often, and most importantly: WHY.
There are some cases of course where someone’s drivers haven’t been updated since 2008 or that their system simply does not meet the minimum requirements though we have not ruled out there are many players who have systems that show no reason for the low performance being experienced.
And so while collecting this information we’re trying to throw out some basic “things to check” to ensure all bases have been covered with these performance issues.
@morior – Glad to have been able to help another player get in!
@Wannacookie – Okay so there are two other things that I would like for you to try that generally have resolved this issue for other players. First, I would like for you to try a Winsock reset.
1. Press and hold the Windows key and then hit the R key. This should bring up the Run dialog box.
2. Type “cmd” without the quotes, and click “OK”. This should open a command prompt window.
3. Type “netsh winsock show catalog >C:\LSP.txt” without the quotes. This will save a file to the root of your C drive called LSP.txt.
4. Once complete, type “netsh winsock reset” without the quotes. When the command is completed successfully, a confirmation appears, followed by a new command prompt line.
5. Close the command prompt and restart your PC.
6. Once back into Windows, try running the game again.
Should this not resolve the issue then you may need to flush your DNS. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Press and hold the Windows key and press the R key. This should bring up the “Run” dialogue box.
2. In that box, type “cmd” without the quotes, and click the “OK” button. A DOS window should open.
3. Enter the following command below and press enter: ipconfig /flushdns
This should clear your DNS cache. You may need to perform this command a few times.
If the issue persists your ISP may be providing old DNS information. Some ISPs take longer to update this information. You could also try using a 3rd party DNS service like those available at http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/ or http://www.opendns.com/start/ . NCsoft does not support these services, but there is information on configuring them at those sites.

Hi fcv– This is beginning to sound like it could be more of a hardware related issue. There’s an application that I find to be incredibly helpful for checking out your system hardware called Speccy. Speccy also shows you memory timings, system temperature, driver dates, etc. That being said, if you choose to install this application I’d really like to see the results so we can track down what the cause of this issue might be.
To install and run Speccy, please use the following instructions:
1. Download Speccy from this link: http://download.piriform.com/spsetup114.exe
2. Once downloaded, double click “spsetup114.exe” to start the installation process.
3. Once completed, double click the “Speccy” icon on your desktop.
4. Once loaded, please click “File” then “Save Snapshot.”
a. Note: If this option is grayed out, Speccy is still gathering the required information. Allow it a few moments to complete this process.
5. Save this file to your desktop. From there you should be able to attach the report to the ticket as you have with the Game Advisor report.
Hi KunPun – To start I’d recommend updating your Windows to Service Pack 1. You can do this and download all critical updates by clicking the “Start” button in Windows and typing in “Windows Update.”
Once you’ve done that, I’d recommend updating your video card drivers to the latest version since it appears your current drivers are a couple of years old:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7-winvista-64bit-301.42-whql-driver.html
Let me know if this has any affect on the issue!

Thanks so much for the reports everyone! Just know that we haven’t forgotten about you all and we’re still looking into this issue. One thing I would like to note, however, is of the many causes for low performance for players with high end graphics cards is that their PCi-Express GPU is plugged into a 1x|4x slot rather than a 16x slot. For players who have recently upgraded their video cards, we recommend ensuring that the GPU is plugged into the proper PCi-Express slot for maximum performance.

Hi Perplexus – Thanks for the clarification. I’d like to suggest perhaps trying the Windows command Msconfig to rule out a lot of these applications that appear to be running on your system.
Please note, this command will not uninstall any applications from your computer.
If your issue is not resolved by using MSCONFIG, please generate a new Game Advisor report prior to disabling MSCONFIG. That way, we can see what, if anything wasn’t disabled by these steps.
@Talisauros – Thanks for the report! It does appear as though your graphics card is below the minimum requirements. This isn’t to say that this is the cause of the issue but could certainly be a contributing issue. I can see that your graphics drivers are from 2007 and so I would definitely recommend updating those. You should be able to use Intel’s auto-detect to locate the most updated drivers for your system:
http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect
If this doesn’t work then it may be possible that another application such as AVG may be blocking the client.
Hi Wannacookie – I would like you to try a new command we just introduced to assist players with these types of issues. To do this:
1. Navigate to your Guild Wars 2 installation folder.
2. Right-click on “GW2.exe” and select “Create Shortcut.”
3. Rename this shortcut to “Guild Wars 2 Port Test.”
4. Right-click on this shortcut and select “Properties.”

Note: Please make sure /clientport 80 is outside of the quotes
Correctly Formatted Example: “C:\Games\Guild Wars 2\GW2.exe” /clientport 80
Incorrectly Formatted Example: “C:\Games\Guild Wars 2\GW2.exe /clientport 80”
6. Once completed, click “Ok” to save your changes.
