CDI- Character Progression- Vertical

in CDI

Posted by: Atlas.9704

Atlas.9704

But what about progress 30-80? Of all the games I’ve played, GW2’s leveling progress has to be one of the most boring I’ve ever played. mostly it boils down to the fact that, once you’ve reached 30, you’ve basically unlocked every skill for your profession; there’s nothing new for you. I mean, yeah, there’s traits and all but I’ve never really found traits to be particularly organic… or as fun as a ‘new power’.

+1 for you because level 30 ish to 80 is usually a dead zone where I’m just trying to get points only for the purpose of reaching 80.
Usually that is the most boring part to me and I’m so glad you brought it up.

CDI- Character Progression- Vertical

in CDI

Posted by: Atlas.9704

Atlas.9704

Agreed. Let’s spend a little more time discussing and brainstorming the following questions:

Controversial: Vertical Progression acquisition can be a pain but what if any elements do you like about Vertical Progression?

There aren’t that many elements I find appealing in vertical progression.
I did like the fact crafting was bumped to 500, because I like crafting.
Though I did not like that the Ascended weapons all have the same art except the colors are different.
One ascended scepter looks just like another, only this time in blue.

Had Ascended weapons been useful in making Legendaries, then that would change how I look at them.
To be completely frank, if ANet stops making more and more BiS stuff I’d be happy.
I stopped playing other games because of gear treadmills.

Vertical progression in the form of elite missions for only level 80s, people who completed the Personal Story, or even the Fractal levels is a better form of vertical progression to me.

Folks that put effort into playing should be rewarded with more challenging missions and events.
You are obviously a skilled player because you can handle Fractal level over 9000 or whatever.

Lets keep coming up with some awesome Horizontal Progression systemic ideas and also reward ideas?

Try to tie these ideas into the core foundation of GW2’s systems and mechanics please.
Chris

Art from armor and backpieces we’ve earned in events shouldn’t be one use only.
Allow them a place in the Achievements skin box like the Radiance pieces I already have.

Give us something worthwhile in the Home Instances. We have nodes and that’s a good first step.
Other things we could use are guild halls, statues which commemorate certain markers in the Personal Story (A monument to Tonn or Apatia, or maybe a wall of the fallen for those dead due to the artillery strike as examples).

Giving us markers, art, statues, or even small books to pick up which retell some instances in the Living world we participated.

Another form of Horizontal Progression I’d love to see is something where professions can specialize based off more specific traits than what we have now. Other games that I play do something similar.

GW1 had the two class system, but I doubt GW2 can do such a thing.
At best we could have one special trait per line and you can only use one of these special traits.
Doing so would give you great benefits in that trait or perhaps unlock something that profession can’t do initially. The cost could be a reduction in efficiency on another line since you are so focused on one.

No two Guardians or Warriors should be the same in my ideal game.

Similar to Firefall’s method. I have an Assault frame and a more specialized version called the Firecat.
While one deals with standard blow uppey damage, the latter is geared towards AOE at the expense of spike damage.
There’s another, Tigerclaw, which is faster and spikes beautifully but against a group it doesn’t do as well.

I like that type of dynamic.

Maybe different missions that can be repeated based on the inital Order we joined?
Where I see Vertical Progression as how difficult a game is, I see Horizontal as how many choices I can have.

Also more skills for weapons or even give us the chance to use different weapons that certain professions could not use before. My poor Engineer is stuck with Rifles and Pistols, but I would love to see a Tazer Mace!

I’m sorry I couldn’t go into depth more, I’ve been busy elsewhere too much.

Is it fair to say that regarding Ascended Gear we would like to see more ways to earn it and in terms of drop rates, a higher percentage chance of acquiring them through this method?

Chris

Though I don’t care much for them, yes. Better drop rates for particularly difficult content would be a better reward than more bloodstone dust or whatever is filling up my bank slots.

Anise does battle in the human story if you rope her in. She’s pretty good.

Oh no doubt about that, I’ve played a few missions with her in them.

If YOU could change 7 things about GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Atlas.9704

Atlas.9704

1. All classes get all access to weapons.

2. There’s no leveling system as is right now. Enemy mobs range from simple (one or two skills max) to Champions (5 to 7 skills they could use against you).

3. Ascended weapons and armor are the precursors to a Legendary. This way you don’t rely on random number generator, but the time you actually put into crafting.

4. At the start of the game you are given a tutorial which explores your race, your personal story arc (the missions just before the three Orders part), and then you are dropped into the living world.

5. Living story/world is broken up into arcs which can be revisited by a historian while events occurring in the “now” are 1 month long or half a month for smaller events. This would allow folks to “go back” and see what they missed.

6. WvWvW is a massive free for all instead of server versus server fighting. Guilds can purchase peace treaties with gold and trade them for official alliances. Benefits include not getting damaged by their attacks and ability to chat on “alliances” chat. Such treaties will expire depending on purchase (longer treaty means heftier price.)

7. Structured PvP allows for duels within a contained arena or allow random hot seat fighting. Winner stays in arena until he or she dies, afterwards gold and other rewards are given to player based on how long they lasted, damage dealt, enemies slain, etc.

Forgive my brief immaturity. I finally had the chance to watch the cutscene and the conversations afterwards. Once again ANet’s art team spiked the ball at the end zone to win, but they manage to hit it over the park for a grand slam, and recover it only to slam dunk it in another gymnasium a mile away.

This was fracking awesome! It reminded me of the art puppet style show we have in the character race intros. Plus the conversations around after all this were nice catches. Jory’s little mad cackle moment is funny. I have now been given a quaggan love story to follow later on, plus the idea of mesmers making their own clothing from illusions.

Well I can’t recite the LS without other sources because it is in my nature to search for all scraps of information. Though I too can agree the game itself hasn’t really explained Scarlet’s motives. Marjory started in Dragon’s Bash because Logan hired her (along with a pretty sweet looking cut scene too) for the murder of Theo Ashford.

As for the Queen, based on what I can remember the Jubilee was made to show that humans are still in the fight.
The game does have great idle conversations at times with NPCs, but they do lack an overall plot synopsis. ANet knows about this and they are trying to work on that in the future.

I hate the fact that as a WvW player I need to craft and pve to get ascended gear. PvE is nothing but a boring champ train and full of elitest PvErs who tell you how you should play. Its bad enough other MMOs force you to raid with your guild to get gear but now GW2 forces you to run with random people in queensdale to get you materials.

see what I did there op? Yeah and to let you know WvW players need to pve more often then pve players need to wvw.

All the more reason to have PvE and WvWvW stand on their own instead of trying to combine the two. Alas ANet won’t listen to that idea. (helpless shrug)

So she has not been confirmed to be our personal nemesis?
Your link is from almost a year ago (February of 2013) — are they ever going to get to the identity of this personal nemesis?

I think they mean to keep this vague so folks, in a perfect world, could pick and choose who they wanted.
However since this was Angel McCoy who wrote it chances are she was alluding to Scarlet being our nemesis.

With the latest backlash from some of our player base, I’ll doubt they will flat out say “This person is your nemesis”. At least I hope not, because that would be downright folly. Some folks might like Canach over Scarlet, others Scarlet over Canach, and folks like me might choose whoever is the next baddie in the future.

-Lions Arch with the Aetherblades
-Humans during the Jubilee and Toxic Alliance

If anything she’s got her fascination towards the humans more than her own people.
She needs to point those silly guns that a way (Points to the Maguuma areas)

And that’s really the sad thing to me about her.
Had her plans and releases hit the Sylvari areas more she might have been a more compelling character.

Why the storytelling isn't strong part of gw2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Atlas.9704

Atlas.9704

Part of the difficulty comes with the Personal versus Living story struggle.
The former helps build up key characters in a player’s life: the race mentor, the order mentor, whoever is ruling that race, etc.
The latter should continue that build up and reach conclusions such as character deaths, passing the torch to new generations, newer developments within said characters.

One of the big problems though is the Personal story is “locked” in a sense and cannot be altered, as such that means characters our players interact with cannot really feel like they are in jeopardy for fear of ruining the timeline of the Personal story.

There is a solution, albeit controversial, that I support: Scrap or alter the Personal story to be the Living Story. We’ve had the Zhaitan arc, now release the Scarlet arc or something better, when that’s concluded they can alter those characters however they want now. If you don’t follow the Personal Story then you don’t see the changes to NPCs.

One point I can see in resisting this is the question of how different is this to other instanced storytelling? Honestly not that much. In fact it almost harkens back to the days of GW1’s stories, minus the annoying mission spots that block parts of the map.

No matter what ANet does one thing is clear: you can’t have a Living World if part of it is locked in time. That means you have sections of your map, of your game, which are always “no go” because Gods help that poor player who hasn’t finished his human Personal Story arc when the Queen gets killed off in the Living World.

For the sake of storytelling the Personal Story, as we know it now, must die. That way we can truly have a world that always changes and have writing which would affect the characters we know and love/hate.

I voted like even though I still do have issues with her.
I like her, but she’s so boring now.
I like her, but the voice is just wrong (in my opinion) for a villain that ANet is trying to sell us.
I like her though I think I would like her better if she changed a bit like Canach did.

I don’t think she needs to be retconned out of existence, but at least wrapped up to a point where we don’t see her as much if any.
Of course I’ve always been a fan of multiple power blocs, different factions piling on each other all at once, and multiple storylines where some come together.

My ideal entertainment runs along the lines of Babylon 5, Game of Thrones, Alpha Centauri (one of the best video games ever), and titles that follow similar format.

When they first brought up the evolution of the Living Story one thing that gave me hope was the fact we would meet many interesting characters.

“Aside from the Living Story main characters, we’ll also be surprising you with interesting villains, one of whom will become your personal nemesis. "

So in my eyes, I thought we’d see multiple villains scheming and plotting against each other and us players. We then could decide if we liked a specific one to be our nemesis.

One release would be a Bad Guy A story, the next a Bad Girl D story, the one after might combine the two or something of the sort.

Yet in the Living Story we had one villain who was quickly arrested (Canach) and another which has spanned for nearly a whole year.
Okay great, but does she need to be in every update somehow? No she does not need to be, but ANet feels like we need to be reminded of her at every turn.
So as a villain I don’t mind her, in a way, but in no way possible will she be my personal nemesis despite how many times she’s shoved down my throat.
