I’ve had my moments where I wanted to scream at ANet.
Even then I didn’t consider leaving this title, because it is a fun stress reliever for me.
I think the scariest thing would be if I had no opinion, good or bad, for them because that would mean there was no passion for this game in me.
Vanilla and BC WoW took MONTHS to level, even an experienced powerleveller would take about 2 months to hit the max level. And even with this incredibly long levelling time, it was still the most successful MMORPG ever. Pacing is an incredibly important aspect to making an MMORPG successful.
Well goodie for BC and Vanilla WoW, but this game is not them.
Nor is this game released during the time they were, when online games were something of a novelty and just before they became a big thing.
Yes pacing is important, we agree there, but nowadays the pacing of old might not be the intended goal of newer designers and titles.
I’ve heard similar gripes on games in the past as well.
Why can’t Title Y be like Title X? Title X was fun, successful, and makes folks feel nostalgic.
Title X was successful because either there wasn’t much competition, it just “got there first”, or was rather well constructed in the mindset of players at that time.
Sometimes the stars align and Title X gets all three, if not more, of these lucky factors.
Title Y is a product of Title Y’s time, not X. The gaming tastes have changed, the demographics aren’t what they used to be, technology has changed, and competition has differed.
tldr version: GW2 is not WoW, Vanilla/BC/any other expansion-wise.
Comparisons or even lamentations that this title isn’t like that will not make anything better.

The problem is right there in front of you. You approached the game like this -> “Right what’s the fastest way to get the best of everything and level to 80 with the least effort possible” That will make EVERY game boring. I’ve been playing since launch and it never gets dull or boring but that’s because you have to enjoy the lore and EVERY detail of the beautiful world.
The problem with most players is they only care about beating a game and getting the best stuff as instantly as possible.
Maybe if they made levelling slower I’d have a reason to do that.
Unlikely because the gamer culture still dictates that someone, somewhere, would try to find the quickest and easiest way to reach top level.
Then those that follow said way would still get bored quickly and not enjoy the game on the idea that end game shouldn’t matter here.
We will get to kill Scarlet.
The problem will be if ANet tries to pull any of those “I was under a mad spell” strings just before we put the flag through her heart.
She will die, oh yes she will.
Then Keil will award Hero-Tron a medal for his work, who will in turn support Evon Gnashblade out of gratitude for the tune ups he recieved.
Somebody on the Captain’s Council will either be dead or wounded so badly they can’t hold office (I’m looking at Magnus). Evon will then take up the mantle and resume gladiatorial fights to recoup his losses with the Black Lion company.
With this we’ll get the following:
Keil and Evon in office
Hero-Tron receives a Quaggan parade out of gratitude for his actions
Evon initiating a Gladiatorial dueling arena, there’s your 1v1 dueling area folks.
Scarlet dead
A new underground zone to play
Possibly new bad guys coming from said zones
Scarlet dead, just in case I didn’t get that point across
Quaggans leading a parade, just in case I didn’t get that across either.
:)
Well at least that’s how my fantasy world would work.
She’s going to capture whoever made the Steam creatures down below Lion’s Arch.
The Steam things aren’t her initial creation. She’s just modified stuff from other people here and there.
Oh, I thought “mini game” was a reference to games played with minis, like the polymock game they were planning.
I want polymock once again. Hopefully with a way to incorporate minis we’ve collected into it. Even if they are just for display.
Activities like Keg Brawl, Sprint, Crab Toss, Survival, Dragon Ball, and whatever else they’ll make up should be accessible from both areas in my opinion.
Though I will never agree that the mini game activities should use our character’s skills.
Hopefully that wasn’t the intention of this thread. If so then I’ll still stand by my statement.
The games are fine with their own skill sets, sometimes that’s what makes them more fun for me than any of the PvP I’ve seen here.
The sPvP game mode does need new ways to play, possibly more variety in maps as well. However just tacking on mini games in the area won’t necessarily fix the deficiencies of that game mode.
I’ll agree it looks strange, but how does it break lore?
Elsa the Snow Queen will come and freeze everyone. :P
Hmm Soule’s music combined with Idina Menzel’s voice and oh dear Six Gods my ears need a cigarette from such a beautiful thought.

Or they thought “Hey cool design, let’s use it”
What gets me is when the downed player never says thank you. It is not that hard to type “TY” after a rez. I always say “TY” no matter what is going on.
Yes, yes it is when Aether or Molten are all over you that second.
If I rez you in the middle of a fight and you don’t say “TY” I completely understand.
Your implied thanks will be shown when you get out of the line of fire or start attacking the enemy.

I’d say more like Recluse from City of Villains because they look more mechanical.
Heal O Tron to the rescue! (speculations)

Heal o Tron will become Optimus Tron and sacrifice himself to help the heroes kill off Scarlet. His unlocking the Matrix of Rata Sum will light our darkest hour.
Then Optimus Tron backpacks will be available in the Gem Shop later, as a way of Evon honoring his actions.
Still to figure out why Tequatl got stronger!

He was tired of being beat up constantly.
So he went to the gym and tried to buff up, though at first his trainer was Jormaag and they didn’t get along well.
Eventually Teq found a training regimen that worked for him and passed it along to the Wurm brothers.
Meanwhile Shadow Behemoth still cries in the bathroom at night, looking at his reflection while whispering “Be strong, be strong, you can do it”.
In all seriousness it could have been a development where it had nothing to do with Scarlet directly.
Maybe the ley line wibbley wobbley energy things just pumped him up for a moment.
Meanwhile on my server I’ve seen people go out of their way to revive or rez folks.
Yeah I’ll pull away if my health is how and some Aethersnot is firing off his proton pack at me, but I stick close because Aetherman will die and then I can get back to helping people.
Great quote from Magnus and it does reflect humanity at times.
In fact Star Trek had a quote with similar context:
Let me tell you something about Hew-mons, Nephew. They’re a wonderful, friendly people, as long as their bellies are full and their holosuites are working. But take away their creature comforts, deprive them of food, sleep, sonic showers, put their lives in jeopardy over an extended period of time and those same friendly, intelligent, wonderful people… will become as nasty and as violent as the most bloodthirsty Klingon. You don’t believe me? Look at those faces. Look in their eyes.
I’ll gladly take a Dragon’s Bash pinata and a couple of spores in a garden to get my taffy and poison.
Zergfest all over town, ppl are doing it for loot and you call this great?
Yes because ANet is attempting to give content to different types of players.
If you want the coordinated big fights there’s the revamped Teq, Wurms, and there was the giant puppet.
If you wanted smaller coordinated events there’s dungeons and Fractals.
For big stompy zergy action, Queen’s Jubilee and WvW (if you are into PvP action).
I like that Lion’s Arch is now borked six ways to Sunday and flying into the Mists in a handbasket. Just because people are doing the zerg routine doesn’t mean you need to as well. Group with close friends and take on the objectives the zerg aren’t handling right now.
I sure hope that when we assault Scarlets flying drill we get a 5man dungeon and not a mindless zergfest clusterf like Nightmare tower was.
The idea of a new dungeon would be fun.
Much like the Molten and Twilight Assault, I could see ANet making it a fun story driven event. What I want most of all is Scarlet dead in it.
I finally managed to connect and play yesterday, not ANet’s fault but my computer just died on Sunday.
I’ve got to say this patch has been one of the more fun Scarlet based ones out there.
If Flame and Frost’s opening release had this much chaos and fear for its refugees then its opening would have been solid. It does look like ANet did listen to us a bit in terms of atmosphere.
Though I still have a gut reaction that Scarlet doesn’t/won’t care what we do in this one, because chances are this was one big diversion from her.
I’m willing to cut the story some slack since we’re getting close to the end finally.
If there’s one thing I would love to see it would have been a few smaller instanced missions for solo or 2-3 players.
For example, you’d have the big instanced Lion’s Arch “raid” style activity. Outside amongst the refugees some would cry out to you and ask for specific help.
That would spawn you in a mission for something specific with the miasma countdown for timer’s sake.
Yes the rewards wouldn’t be as big compared to the Lion’s Arch main event, but it would give those who prefer smaller missions some fun as well.
you do everything in WWW home map, unless its prime time, then you sit in que
Hey look, they found a way to get more people into WvWvW! lol
I tend to use Divinity’s Reach or Hoelbrak more anyways, the only time I cared about Lion’s Arch was when I pressed the PvP button to get a free ride back to a city.
It like a big shout out to City of Villains.
Thank you! I’m so glad I’m not the only one who saw this.
When I looked at the release notes and pics I just kept thinking, “Lord Recluse is here?”
Very interesting, can’t wait to try out the fights.
Well now they can play Ghosts and Charr with Scarlet’s army.
Now I’m imagining some Aetherblade running around with a sheet on his head acting like a ghost.
I bet the orphan’s trip was Kiel’s idea.
They need not fear we all know Evon will protect and evacuate them.
Well of course he will, he’s going to need the labor for rebuilding his trading posts after all this goes down.
But it was all thanks to Ho-Ho-Tron that the Orphans didn’t have to burn each other to keep warm in the winter.
That’s only because there’s no such thing as Sylvari orphans.
I’ve had it with your anti-Sylvari bigotry, meatbag!
Now hold on there Sprouts Supermarket.
I don’t have bigotry towards the Sylvari, Charr maybe but that’s another story.
I’m mostly indifferent unless we’re talking about Scarlet.
She can burn for all I care.
((A dice-golem would be funny/cool))
If I had enough dice or clay, and time, it would make a fun sculpture at least.
The RNG becomes self aware?
My Gods, a Inquest Golem Mark II with all the cubes shaped like dice.
Probability in physical form!
Even if we do take it down we’re only given two blues and a green.
What has science done?!
I bet the orphan’s trip was Kiel’s idea.

“Picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue”
heh, I loved the Airplane reference.
End game is WwW mate
To some, but to others not so much.
I sometimes see WvW as a elaborate mini game at best and a strange hybrid experiment that is still ongoing at worst.
Dungeons and Fractals are my end game, that and surviving Karkha island solo.
Thank you for this progress.
Meh I’ll just use one of the 35 crafting boosters I have that are collecting dust in the bank if I needed help.
Lion’s Arch burns
We go to ground
Ashes fill the sky
Broken bodies litter around
We see buildings crumble
and see Scarlet try to act like a boss
but the town was a waste anyways
so nothing of value was lost.
;)
(slow clap to ANet)
They may as well remove the supposed bonuses, they don’t really add up to much for the PvE player anyways.
Agreed, no need for me lower myself by taking base in Rata Sum.
Divinity’s Reach will be my home for crafting and such.
Good riddance, let’s shake up the maps a bit more ANet!
Will we ever see changes in NPC’s reactions to our characters based on Charm/Dignity/Ferocity?
Thanks, I know I cheated with six instead of five but ANet does like to do things differently. Plus six is a good round holy number to the Humans of the game anyways.
Scarlet destroys the water fountain, because it is basically the running gag.
Divinity’s Reach 2.0 form together in a giant Asuran based Golem made by Zojja in secret.
Braham and Rox form the arms, for the Ka-bam! feeling.
Jory and Kas the legs.
Canach the body because of a sudden redemption scene (Evon paid his way out or something), and Taimi will form the head.
They’ll fight the Mecha Puppet Lady of Doom.
Lion’s Arch will be damaged, the map will change a bit.
Finally the lovely Lionguard Lyns (alliteration ahoy) will accept another token for items she’s willing to trade.

4) She is an american creation, and we know americans loves that oil.
As an American I want to say that I’m appalled she associated with my country.
I mean come on! Without getting too political, we’ve created far more dangerous villains. Put her on the kiddie table, as the beginning salad entrée.
I don’t care who you are, you don’t try to defend some place by killing 10s of thousands of people. Generally speaking, that’s what the villain does.
Have you seen Watchmen?
How about Star Wars . . . I submit there were thousands of people on the Death Star when it went up. While some of them were undoubtedly evil people, many were more than likely just doing their jobs or posts without actual malice in their hearts.
That’s not even touching what happened to the still-under-construction second Death Star. I mean, those work crews . . . whew.
How anyone doesn’t see the Rebel Alliance as anything other than murdering terrorists is beyond me
Meanwhile the Federation in Star Trek lets whole planets die due to their precious Prime Directive.
I for one fully enjoy the idea that I can purchase WvWvW levels with Laurels and Badges.
This way I can get the bonus chests that have been collecting dust and enjoy the process.
A fair compromise really.
If Anet’s made any mistakes here, it’s that they should have introduced Scarlet’s torment sooner. By now so many players are fed up with her that they don’t really care about her true motivations.
The past year of Living World has been a massive learning curve for us for many reasons, and there have been some areas like this where we agree that there is room for improvement. We’re committed to taking the lessons that we’ve learned over this year and applying them to how we author content and deliver story moving forward, and I’m confident that our storytelling in this format will get better and better as a result!
Good to hear, I have noticed improvements as the releases go by.
“Who wants Doylak rides?”
“Giddyup!”
Nah, we had this Asuran father and son relation drama already in GW1, Anet would not recycle that for GW2 with a father – daughter thing would they…?
Oh, heavens, no. ANet would never recycle ANYTHING from their previous game to use for this game. EVER. Perish the thought.
Agreed…Anet doesn’t recycle stuff. Hey check out my Flameseeker Armor!!!
But was that in GW1?
Delaqua’s instance should not be used for new players to recap the story so far.
To propagate a story forward you cannot keep recapping. Right now it’s like every episode in a TV drama series is a recap of the previous episodes such that the story is mostly Episode 1. We have a wiki for that. That’s what I did when I missed out on GW1 lore since I never played GW1.
And we’ve had quite the number of people in forums scream how they shouldn’t need to scour through stuff outside the game to see how the plot progresses.
Besides this update was more for the WvWvW folks and is leading up to a bigger one, or at least in theory, so a final recap and focus on the next big target isn’t that bad.
Perhaps it’s a set up for the next LS arc? Taimi will become the villain.
In her quest to be like Scarlet, she’ll find a way to stop her, only to harness her evil intentions so that she may be strong and “walk”. She’ll be half asura/half watchwork and her army of Toxic Molten Aetherblades , lead by Colonel Scruffy, will rain fire and brimstone across Tyria!! AAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHA
Long live QUEEN TAIMI!
By the Six I hope not!
Though if we want to go cheesy I think Taimi should do a Luke Skywalker moment.
Scarlet offers her power and abilities beyond normal society.
She has the technology, she can make her faster, better, stronger, with more Daft Punk auto tune, you get the picture.
Then Taimi refuses, “I am an Asura like my mentor before me.”
She and Zojja then Sparta kick Scarlet down some lava pit.
It was short, sweet, and very helpful for those who haven’t been up to date on the storyline recently.
I agree I liked it more than I anticipated.
Interaction with the PvP elements were low, character interaction was better, and it stopped at just the right time to give that cliffhanger.
I don’t mind it because now it gives her a two fold reason to like Scarlet’s work.
Not only academic freedom, but also the freedom to do anything with the research.
To study what she wants and use what she wants to fix her legs if she so desires.
