3. Dynamic locations for monster groups and others
This was a feature I actually expected when GW2 was going to release, that I will never see a bunch of centaurs standing around in a field, and my Dailies say “Kill 10 monsters that look like a centaur”, that makes no different than the traditional MMO.

While the dynamic events add some depth to the world of Tyria, it doesn’t give much of an impact as it should have been when on paper. Dynamic events repeat too often and has little known variety for an area, as I roam around a village I get the captain saying “Help! My friends are stuck in web cocoons! You have to save them!” for the 4th time in the same hour. It’s insane. This repetition makes the player feel weary and gives emotions much similar to a grind. This also leaves the world is very little actual impact, why should players care for the captain’s friends if they have a constant habit of getting stuck in web cocoons?

While we’re not talking about dynamic events in this thread, it is a great problem to the game’s core and makes it personally worse for me when the AI is a bunch of brain dead people. A key step is having animals and mobs migrate place to place around the map depending how the situation goes for meta events and dynamic events. I’d love Skyrim random mob spawning, seeing all kinds of mobs as I explore the map, it gives an enhanced feeling that it isn’t Tuesday every time I go to Queensdale. While these things will most likely go into random stages of cycles, and gives more of an illusion of dynamic events, this is a great start to go with.

TL;DR:
- Mobs and mob groups should have a random location to spawn depending on the dynamic event/meta event situation. They should also have migrations (watching an army of deer moving up north, away from a village for example), and see the beauty of it while on top of a roof. Since the megaserver is kicking in, this feature should be randomized when a map opens. If you love keeping track of animals whereabouts, that really sucks, because I’m not aware of any solution for this.

- Boss battles (champions included) should be different for each battle, having some kind of significant change. So far any significant change I’m aware of is the different kinds of moves a mob could make, being randomized each battle.

- Mobs should be attacking while moving, healing other allies when needed, dodging more, and predict how the player will approach and attack them (example: A player using melee, bandit switches to range and takes a step back). Other various attacks should also be added of different kinds of mobs should be added, too. Horses don’t exist in Tyria, but I’ll still use them as an example. (example: horse has a flee or fight option which will most likely be random. Earth elementals has a self destruct move that spawns tinier elementals which may execute depending on the player’s melee/range and health)

- Mobs should have some kind of awareness to do different strategies and tactics depending on the player’s melee/range, hp, their hp, and what’s going on with their allies and enemies.

- Bosses shouldn’t have large health pools all the time. I solo range them and walk in circles, never got hit. (though that’s an AI issue).

- In dungeons, mobs shouldn’t return back to their position if a player is too far.

- Stacking should be fixed, seriously. No more, please. I occasionally hear the excuse “But it’s quick!”, either because completing them gives little rewards (which is the most plausible) so you have to farm them repeatedly to the most efficient way possible, or people are just lazy. Using sneak and clever ways to skip mobs that doesn’t make the AI look like a blind guy is fine, but stacking is another thing (position exploit).

- I don’t want the captain yelling at me for the 4th time saying his friends got trapped in web cocoons in the same hour

- I don’t want to bash a stick against the Shatterer’s leg to death while this dragon fires its attacks at nothing.

While these suggestions will take many months and probably years to implement, starting on them is better than nothing at all.

Thanks for your time.

A list of suggestions for AI

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Avascar.9237

Since the dawn of the announcement of Guild Wars 2, I have never expected such a delicate and artistic style of the game’s AI. Such remarkable feats by professional programmers, drawn to the hardcore testing and rewiring, sharpening and optimizing its efficiency, and enhancing and upgrading its way of thought from the ground up by the creators of the heavy lore game that is Guild Wars 1. Filled with such personality and distinctive features, every mob is remarkably different!

Not so, unfortunately. So far, compared to other games that I have played, they’ve been quite shallow and lacking depth to a game that adds so much combat variety. Maybe this AI is acceptable on a game like World of Warcraft, but with a combat that’s as deep as below the ice berg, the game absolutely cannot reach its full enjoyment potential when 70% of the time I’m engaging with some kind of AI in the game. They’re literally moving punching bags.

So I will have a list (with details and such) for suggestions for the AI. Anybody with an idea that believes it helps the AI is welcomed.

1. Have different behavior for different types of mobs
When the games of TERA and other combat/adventure games came, they had a handful of variety of different kinds of monsters. Charging unicorns, fleeing fairies, and fish that eats your cash when you drop it in the water. While some of these things are subtle to the game world, they add life and encourage explorers to investigate and give light to their friends perhaps a mysterious creature in a underwater cave, slaughtering the Krait mindlessly for a reason hidden in lore (of course, this personally isn’t a great example itself).

Moas having a choice whether to flee from its attacker or maybe a charge, it wouldn’t be so repetitive if I see a refreshing breath of a unique attack from a particular mob. That is, if I don’t see a wild boar trying to act like a horse, that’s a bit off. The 2 minute animations does well, but is only fluff and does no significant impact to the player.

2. Attacks of a handful of variety brings different strategies
I hoped when I finally reached Orr, I would see the Risen attracting attention of its own kind. Perhaps when a Risen mob says “Everybody… Come!” it broadcasts a signal that even alerts the Risen from the other side of the island, creating its own zerg of zombies with teamwork. I also would love to see a mob attack while moving for once, I pity their handicapped skills.

Having strengths and weaknesses in all the creatures of Tyria, much like the Dredge will bring in more variety of combat while having players experiment with potions and traits that help them during their journeys (but not so much as to switch to a different set of traits every time I go to a different map). The Dredge as they are is a wonderful example of how Tyria’s monsters should work. Their underground attack and immunizations/strengths brings different strategies and encourages players to play with different strengths/weaknesses/tactics than the average mindless zerg player.

However, not all mobs should have strengths/weaknesses, because this actually messes up a player’s sense of organization by having to switch to a different set of traits and potions every single time he/she goes to a different map. Attack variety of mobs should be dynamic, a giant jumping and slamming the ground, harpies flying in the air and shooting down projectiles, or the Shatterer actually moving for once, destroying turrents and damaging Charr bases and it wreaks everything in its way.

Maybe one battle I see the Shatterer staying in put because we’re successfully surrounding it, or maybe another battle the Shatterer decides to ram into our defenses, having us to setup layers of turrets and traps and drag the Shatterer to where we need it to go. Giant mid-boss battles should bring a great risk of danger if not completed, not the result of a mighty dragon feeling bored and deciding to fly away.

World Raid Bosses are TOO EASY!!!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Avascar.9237

Avascar.9237

I believe world bosses and dynamic events should be scaled upon the number of players and the players participating average level

For example, fighting Shatterer with 10 level 80’s is like fighting Shatterer with 30 level 20’s. Since I’m level 80, I can kill everything below lvl 40 with a couple hits, this shouldn’t happen.

Scaling is also way too much or way too low. I started soloing a boss, when suddenly a zerg appeared! The 50-man zerg started spamming 1 on the boss, when eventually the entire zerg got killed because they were stupid, and I ended up soloing this boss with maxed out difficulty.

Sorry to be extremely cheesy, but

I think that would be a great idea to keep the game alive. There would be a new system called “Mods”, where you can download dungeons, maps, weapon types, and such. These mods will have to be approved by devs and players (and will have to have a majority vote of yes), then your game will update (in-game) and will be applied instantly. Although you can only choose to download them via browser or when you come across content that needs it.

Players can create traditional quests and upload them in the mods menu, and can create instanced maps for the player and his team to explore, and may occasionally see another stranger on the map, experiencing the same thing he is. However, only downside is that you won’t see many players as you would be used to (of course, you barely see any players in mid-game anyway, this shouldn’t be a problem as long as scaling is fine).

I seriously doubt new races and classes will be added if there will ever be mod support.

Different Map Zones with Different Donditions

Avascar.9237

I’ve been exploring the world more a bit lately… But something always bothered me. It’s more personal, I suppose you can say. I know no MMO has ever done this, but I think this mechanic will bring in more tactical thinking and change strategies a bit.

For instance, deserts will increase burning conditions, sunshine attacks will be more effective, while water and shadow attribute skills are less effective. Of course, if this is ever considered it won’t be to a great significant level, but will be useful when facing bosses, champions, etc.

Swamp zones will have moist air that will make burning conditions less effective, cold zones will make burning condition durations shorter (especially blizzards), hot climates will make water attribute skills less effective (shorter range because of evaporation, etc). Night time will have shadow and dark attribute skills more effective, while at sunrise light and holy skills are more effective. This kind of thing shouldn’t be an all-you-need-box-to-stop-zergs, since this won’t do much of a change. Of course, this should be considered when all of GW2’s professions have considerable variety of element attributes.

-More dungeons
-More fractals
-Mounts (no flying mounts unless there’s sky zones, floating islands, etc, should be given for free)

-Deeper dialogue for random NPC’s

That’s all I can think of. Some of these features will take a few years if they ever consider it.

It was a bit satisfying, that I’m the one that does the final blow. Although I’m not satisfied because of the answers I got, I wanted answers from her but SOMEBODDEEEYYYY just had to ruin it. Though in the cutscene, she had yellow veins surrounding her face, and looks like something’s happening to her, but then the screen faded to white…

Overall, I don’t exactly think it’s the end of Scarlet, if we need to solve the mysteries of Arc 1 we need to involve Scarlet. I felt there has to be more, there has to be! While it was pretty awesome at first, I played the instance 2-3 more times and interacted with her control panel.

I got the message “The thing she was after… Was the dragon.” Why is she after the dragon? Which dragon? Was she manipulated by the dragon? If A-Net deliberately didn’t give a clear reason why she was after the dragon, then we can all be safe to assume that the dragon was messing with her mind.

But this also raises a big question, when Scarlet saw the Eternal Alchemy, why did she find Mordemoth there? Why is the dragon linked with the Eternal Alchemy? How is it linked? And since she’s so bizarrely smart, why did she fell into such a trap that has the possibility to wake up a kitten dragon!? Was it that she thinks that the Pale Tree and the Elder Dragon needs to have a fight? To make them on equal ground and power? Makes sense if you look at it that way.

TL;DR: No.

That is cool how they put in an Easter Egg for engineers.

Yes, but why? How does waking a dragon tie to her journal/story?

That has been my problem not just with villains like Scarlet but the Elder Dragons themselves.

Why are they doing what they do? Are the dragons just one-dimensional Evil™ beings that want to destroy the world because they are Evil™?

They want to destroy the world, great. Why? This has not been answered by ArenaNet and we haven’t been given any indication that elder dragons have any motivation deeper than an inanimate thing like asteroid or earthquake.

As for Scarlet, awakening a dragon makes no sense from what we’ve been told about her motivations. Maybe Scarlet became a dragon minion the second she made mental contact and got converted into another of the same boring dragon minions we’ve been seeing before.

The motivation of every single dragon minion in Tyria is “Obey dragon’s will. Do whatever dragon says.” And the dragon’s motivation is nothing but “Destroy everything because I am Evil™.”

I like the other characters in the story like Rox, Braham, Majory, Kasmeer and the rest but ArenaNet really, really needs to think about what it takes to make a good villain. We haven’t seen one yet in GW2.

I find that the dragons’s motives are executed not-so-well. I believe they’re forces of nature, it’s like saying why does a tree grow? Why do people die? Why do plants have offspring? It’s to keep things in balance. Although I have no idea why magic goes high and low throughout Tyria’s centuries, since I see no effect on the world. Maybe their spells and rituals weaken, yeah, but what difference does it make? Is Tyria’s magic the life force of all life, or something more/less?

And as humans and other species with human-like personalities, we’re disrupting that balance of nature by killing the elder dragons. Either they will be replaced, or the balance of nature will stir out of balance and cause great destruction of the world.

Perhaps what Scarlet saw in the Eternal Alchemy was literally the balance of the universe, that the elder dragons were eternally tasked to kill everything on the world so new life can grow, it’s like a forest fire. It’s also one of the reasons how we came to evolve without any significant threat during our theorized evolution process, could we really live with dinosaurs roaming around? I believe not.

What happens if there’s no threat for us? We start to grow, grow, and grow until there’s some kind of threat. In the real world, with 7 billions people, our own resources are starting to go against us, we’re running out.

In Tyria, the elder dragons are our threat, but what happens when they’re all gone? We start overpopulating and eventually create so much growth that new life cannot live properly. To be honest, I haven’t really find an enemy in any game that’s actually a force of nature.

Do people still want quests?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Avascar.9237

Avascar.9237

To be honest, I miss quests. But not the WoW quests or anything of the fetch quests, I want quests that has a story and ongoing progression towards its completion. Runescape’s quest system is the best I’ve ever seen, you solve puzzles, go to dungeons, and make yourself feel special. Heck, you even get a quest cape for completing all of them! Truly a reward.
In Runescape, I rarely seen any fetch quests, most of them have some kind of story in them. Some of them are just really long dungeons and crossing a booty-trap underground cave stopping this evil necromancer that put his daughter’s soul in a doll body, about to be sacrificed. Others are about passing 3 tests from holy ghosts, retrieving a special sword to defeat a demon that’s terrorizing a village. It would be amazing to see that in GW2.

So if quests are added to the game, have them like a shortened Personal Story, and have some story with its own characters and recurring characters. I also love quests that mention the choices I made in the past.

Here’s an example of how quests should link each other:
Level 20: Defeat an evil group that’s trying to summon a grawl god, you decided to jail the wizard instead of killing him.
Level 40: A thief has released all the prisoners in a jail, and you see the wizard and tells you what he saw as a thanks for showing him mercy.

I don’t ever want quests as some fetch quests (which are what hearts are, leave fetch quests to be hearts, pls). Quests should be like instanced dynamic events, you can also explore new areas and stuff, and solve puzzles and such, and have a party to do a whole quest. I think there should also be hard mode for a quest if you ever want to do them again.

My 2 cents.

I would say, add in swappable weapon skill slots (so more weapon skills), more weapon types, air combat (have steampunk wings, asura hoverboards, whatever), swap gear stats, and have a environment weapon skill.

For the environment weapon skill, imagine this, I find a branch, and decided to put it in my inventory. I can use a button (let’s us alt) and I immediately equip it. So I can just buy a bunch of gears from Skirtt and start throwing them giving them a bunch of conditions. I can also use this for tonics and stuff if I ever want to use them instead of pressing I and finding them, which is quite inconvenient.

Elder Dragons essential for the Planet

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Avascar.9237

After we do kill all the elder dragons, Arena-Net is going to do the “Good job breaking it, Hero” cliche where heroes are always the ones breaking everything. The Gods will return and will wreak havoc themselves and create an almighty dragon called The Singularity, where it masters all elements and can change the very fabric of existence. Tyria explodes and says “Nothing lasts forever…” and we return to our alien planet where humans originated from, then we unlock the furry race.
