I want those wings for my necro soooo badly
I’m truly surprised such a big deal was made out of what Wooden Potatoes said… he’s not even a member of ArenaNet, so I fail to see why his words are so important. Yes, he makes good summaries (a lot of mistakes or lacking-of-details, sure, but good nonetheless), but it’s not like he’s a Word of God.
Yehs.
I know I did not even mention WP
I just thought it was an interesting, different topic.
I must disagree I have recently gotten a friend of mine into the game and he wishes the content was harder at time.
It’s called having multiple layers to a story. Everyone can see what is on the surface while those who want to can look for more.
So back on topic, we are in majority agreement that in Tyria, just as in the real world, djinn and genie are interchangeable.
I am guessing this subject as brought up because of wooden potatoes interpretation of what happened in the shadowbox short story. Where he say’s that Zommoros is a genie and not a djinn. Supposedly A-net made this canon somewhere. In which they separate the two into different entities, and WP will not believe anyone unless it’s a developer that say’s different.
It started with that, but I made the post when I asked some people in game and there is a bit of split. Fair bit of dispute about what he was.
Plus I thought we would put it to rights here, something different to talk about you know instead of Zhaitan and Sylvari.
I’d go with the dev word as well. Now I wish we had whichever source WP is using.
WP was using a source from the game, if you talk to the woman by the Mystic Forge she says he is a Genie. It is were all of this stems from.
So it seems that most here agree with me that he is in fact both, because djinn and genie are the same in GW. Just like real life.
In my native language Djinn and Genie mean same :/ What the difference?
The only difference is the origin of the spelling really. But as I say above some seem to be under the impression that they are different, at least in terms of the game.
Though on a side note what is you native language? If you don’t mind me asking.
Right was have been told that Zommoros is a genie though in game text. However this would mean that he is the only genie we have encountered in any Guild Wars game (at least according to some). Making him one of a kind (excluding the one in the box).
We have also been told via early dev interviews that Zommoros is a djinn, something we have encountered in GW:NF. They fit the same description as Zommoros but some would say that they are not genie, but a different creature all together.
I am just wondering what anyone else has to say on this matter?
Personally I think that genie is a simply a colloquialism for djinn in Tyria just as it is in the real world.
7 years? I thought it was 5 and the kid was 4. I would check but my friend is currently reading it.
I could be completely wrong and pulling that out of thin air, but I could swear it was not seven years.
On the opposite side of the fence, I made a Charr for the following reasons.
- I prefer beast races
- Their backstory was interesting
- Their current civilization is steampunk
- They have a very unique culture
- DEM VOICES
Ditto, also Steve Blum and his epic voice
I weirdly use axe/shield with a rifle secondary.
With the right traits you can stack a fair bit of might without taking any damage for a time. Nice and versatile. Axe/axe just does not have the same shine that it used to.
I just think snaff is the biggest kitten and I really hope that isn’t the end of him because he truly was a great character in a book I read. Yeah that might sound lame but snaff will always be remembered by me if not anyone.
He may be gone but his legacy still live on.
zhaitans brain will be why the dragon came back in the first place, the body is like a puppet on strings, so long as the brain stays safe and hidden, it can eventually re-use the body form provided it has accumulated enough magic energy.
This is part of why the zhaitans mouth exists. and why the dragons seek to eat so much magic, like a wasp queen setting itself up for summer and winter.
any thoughts on this?
I am inclined to agree with you for Zhaitan, and only Zhaitan. As the undead dragon it is not too far fetched to say that the Dragon has no real form but simply cocoons it’s self in a physical form. Kill the shell and Zhaitan needs to recuperate. Though that does not mean that he is not beaten.
If this theory is true then it could take thousands of years for him to come back and rebuild his power and form.
Man and here I am thinking I want more jumping puzzles. I love them so much lol.
It does lock people out that hate and/or are terrible at jumping puzzles. I know my GF skips anything JP related, or I have to do them for her. Luckily for her I love them so…
Ditto I love em too, I love wanting to pull my hair but eventually getting to the end and get that same feeling that I got when I finished Dark Souls.
There is no lore against Norn having giant moustaches, chill out and stop worrying about other people’s characters.
Necromancers in GW1 were those who followed Grenth. And I mean really followed Grenth, the powers of underthings were an extension of his will so to speak, allowing necromancers to harness the power of Aggression (if memory serves).
So they originate from where ever humans worshipped Grenth or from where not worship ears harnessed aggression magic.
I would also like this option, we can hide every other piece of upper body armour, why not he chest
and the living story so far
First the positives (yay):
1. New skins are really cool, fused weapons and gloves look really cool and fit really well with the whole theme. Plus the the new gem store weapons where a very nice additions.
2. Dungeon is pretty sweet and the boss battle and the end was nicely done.
3. The living story segments where also really good, and the titles will be nice to show off later on in the game life span.
4. Cool new characters, pretty sweet, with cool unique item skins.
The negatives (boo):
1. Weapon distribution, pretty sure A-net were not too sure what to do here. Would have loved a fused weapon but hey I am not gonna waste cash on a gamble. Having a skin available on a gamble for a small period of time is not good.
A one off payment in the gem store I feel would have been fine, though having it as a reward for completing the whole thing would have been dandy (finish the living story and get the gloves and a weapon of your choice). Eventually as the game grows up and new players are gonna come in they are still gonna have the same feeling but without the whole gamble.
2. Lost and Found – the only thing I did not like about this story. The current state of the game is not designed for this type of quest. I mean I spent 3 days waiting for my last item to spawn because A) it was random and I had the foolish idea to get the items as they were released. No tracking and random, not good.
Suggestions:
1. Find a way to keep the dungeon in, it was really fun and a nice short run. Would be nice at the end of the year that A-net would release dungeons like this is some sort of Asura simulator (or something like that). Like a round up of the years mini dungeons. I mean they are pretty fun and quick to do (going by this one that we have seen so far).
2. No more lost and found quests until we can track them properly. Not much to add to that really I think everyone knows what was up with this quest.
3. Skin distribution, lots of cool skins and well not a lot of them widely available. I am not saying make everything available with ease. But don’t make us gamble (as I said before). Smack them in as a reward for resting at the bonfire at the end. So it ends up something like this:
Skin 1 – taking part at the end of the event (easy access everyone gets one). Nothing special now, but in a years time the new players will be jealous.
Skin 2 – completing all aspects of the story (like the fused gauntlets). Gotta earn it while you can.
Skin 3 – one off gem store payments (like Rox’s stuff). For the cool one off skins that are on these special characters. Looks cool only for a limited time and more importantly supports A-net. If people want it then they will pay but at the end of the day you are guaranteed to get what you want.
So what do you guys and gals think? Go anything to add? Do I make sense or am I just blowing hot air?
Oh and thanks for reading.
Not really the skin people were after though
Even if Cantha does not return I hope they bring forth some Cantha inspired gear.
Personally love the axe as on off hand with the sword. Deflect projectiles while damaging those near by. Plus a nice ranged attack to close the gap
Remember that GW2 is still a baby in MMO terms, not even a year old. The game is still growing. Plus no sub fee so if you want you can shuffle away and come back when you please.
Race specific classes are just not for this game. Defeats the purpose of an even playing field.
I would love this, it would still make them a staple weapon in the future, while making them available to us economically challenged.
Kinda like the end game weapons in GW1 but you know cooler and themed around the progressive world. I mean we have no clue how much of this content is going to stay/go.
Welcome enjoy the game Word of advice if necro does not work for ya try a different class. Too many people give up when there first class does not work out. You are given 5 slots for a reason, so experiment away.
My thief, an homage to the Assassin and how much I miss Cantha.
That really cool
Omg, how can this thread continued for so long! L O L!
Dedicated Supportive/Healer Build is just for lazy people that are too used to trinity based MMO.
I am with the same wavelength with KensaiZen since my first reply on this post. I can’t stop you from using Healer build but….Yeah, healer build sucks. Its trash, useless. Sorry if you’re offended.
Here’s a tip to some of the pugs which are still confuse:
Get a Hammer, 20% cool down, ask any players that gives water field, keep that (2), there, you got your kitten healing and DAMAGE on the same time. I super love to go on dungeon with Ele and ranger, i super love Ranger’s healing spring, 3 Aoe Healing thats too imbalance IMO. Try this in CoF path 2, its so much fun, rather than being with these boring warrior. COMBO is the best to abuse in this game, not frequent tapping “heal, heal heal” without thinking. Secret? Use your skill at the right timing!
Supportive/Healer Build? Nah, “aint nobody got time for that!” Hahahahahha
Supportive/healer builds are quite viable, they just take more work than shout/boon/meditation builds.
You cannot be static as a staff support guardian, you need to time you consecrations right make sure you are positioned correctly to get the full effect of your skills. Not to mention know the right time to use your elite.
The stigma comes from people thinking that Guardians are monks and try to spam these moves with no finesse. Staff guardians are not built for this.
Actually, I quite like it. Before it was the weakest of the elementals in terms of looks. It was… an orb. Now it has a degree of character.
It was a wisp. A form perfect for an air elemental. Now it has all the character of a lightning crab… a ground hugging, crawling creature. Might as well make the Earth elemental all misty with a feather boa stuck in its rear.
I feel I must disagree, I can honestly say that I have never saw an air elemental look like the new model. And for that I like it. I am in the camp the the air ememental lacked character, as in it did nothing. The other elementals all have idle animations and look like they are living being. The old Air model was just a ball, it bounced from time to time.
That’s a matter of taste… to me a floating ball bouncing from time to time has plenty of character – for an Air Elemental. Character isn’t something you get from having limbs, or else R2D2 from Star Wars would be a really boring character.
The main point is that nobody complained about the old looks. And there are plenty of unfinished graphics in the game. Obsidian Skin literally has no effect!
And finally, this change is loved by some and hated by others. Previous look was loved by some, while others were indifferent. That’s a change for the worse whichever way you turn it.
I see your, point though I must say that R2D2 had character because it was expressive in term of intonation not movement. This cannot be compared to the bouncing air elemental. The character of this new elemental comes from the limbs because you can just do more with limbs in terms of animation.
Though as you say it is a matter of taste some will like it some will not, either way.
On the bright side it show that A-net are not done with changing the aesthetic of the game. Which means that if people it bring up and their make their voices heard, then it increases the likely hood that A-net will see it and consider to make the change.
Ok to clarify for people who obviously can’t read. Or jump to conclusions without actually reading the post.
I am not against healing. I am highlighting that as a guardian you are a front line support. I even outlined that the best healing weapon you have is a mace.
Guardians heal while fighting. They don’t hang back and try to use symbols and staff 2 for healing.
Now why don’t Pro Guardian players that want people to play how they want to play (even if it means they become alienated by their guild for being crap at what they do) tell us how they heal effectively without attacking at the same time?
Play how you want to play. That is a choice anyone has. Being picked for a party because you are good at what you do. That’s a choice you don’t have. L2P. Thank you.
I beg to differ, though there is a difference between making a healing build and making a support build. I made an effect healing/support build using the staff and ground targeted consecrations. Granted I do not use it anymore because I got the great sword I was after. But it worked and it was effective.
It kinda sounds like you want all guardians to be the same, but at the end of the day that is not the point of the game.

Hey,
Originally I created an Elementalist with the thought of only doing dungeons with her at full support mode/healing.
I have read some of the forums (after the fact of leveling her a bit) that suggest against going support or heal build and just doing more DPS with minor heal abilities.
I wanted to know if it truly is a silly thing to go full support or recommendations?
I usually play healers in games so it was kind of a bummer that I couldn’t in this one (I do like the trinity, just doesn’t cover the one character I always lean toward :P ) I have a thief as my main character for all else.
P.S Also, someone noted that healing was a very boring way to go versus DPS?
As someone who also enjoys playing healer I gotta say GW2 is refreshing. Water magic is your first port of call when traiting and where your healing comes from. But Just member Support does not equal Healing. All the fields you put down and boons you give are all under support. So there is much benefit to swapping you elements around according to the situation.
Apparently I am in the minority here
I find it ugly, and it just confuses me that the patch notes said the change would only affect the lesser air elemental, but the big one was changed as well. Hopefully it is a bug and will get fixed.
It works on both elementals with me
That my friend is called science!
The Asura as a race saw the first Sylvari they came across and thought “I wonder how they tick”. So they did what most scientist would do and cut em open and take a look.
You see the Asura are a race of scientist. More often than not in RL scientists perform some what unethical experiments, but because no one has performed them before then it is seen as being fine. Until we step back and look at what has been done. Then new laws and rules are made so that these actions are not replicated.
Need we think back to what Zimm was doing to that Seer in GW1
Topic says it all, I summoned up a few Air Ele’s to find that they now are kinda scorpion like. And I really love it. Huge improvement in terms of aesthetic.
Good job A-net
Saint Michael & The Sword of Fire
I am very impressed by this
The goal for all necro’s from this day forward. Well at least it looks awesome!
So, being honest, I refuse to use a greatsword simply because I find the gameplay with one to be boring and lacking in variety.
I’ve chose to use dual axes instead. I’m only level 42 and the build I am currently running for strictly PvE only is as follows:
Strength: 4
Arms: 10, I
Defense: 10, II
Tactics: 0
Discipline: 8Along with those traits the skills I am using are:
Healing Signet, Signet of Fury, Signet of Might, Dolyak Signet, and Signet of RageI’m fairly new to the construction of builds. If there is any information I left out, feel free to ask, but I could certainly use some input.
I was running an Axe/Axe signet build for a while on the run up to Orr. They are pretty effective but I have switched it out to a stance build since.
If you are gonna stick to signets go with the Sig of Stamina not the Dolyak. It is far more useful in the long run.
Though right now I am still running a stance/adrenaline build. Traits wise I put 20 into Strength, Discipline (go up to 30 here if you like but you don’t have to) and Defense. Focus on leveling them in that order, Strength and Discipline to 20 gives you a lot of attack power based on your adrenaline level (which you can keep topped up with beserker’s stance), as well as extra damage with axes (both with crits and base dmg).
Defense at 20 will give you a health regen with adrenaline level and some nice defensive traits (like “embrace the pain” and “last stand”). As well as “sure footed” for that extra stance time. My other two skills are Endure Pain and Frenzy. Activating these at the same time allows to attack attack twice as fast while taking no damage for a few seconds.
Elite skill is up to you, you are not reliant on one (I use Signet of Rage for the extra adrenaline but you can use anything really).
different professions swing it differently, i play ranger, it looks fine
Really? REALLY? Male Norn ranger using auto-attack looks hilariously bad. Its like a fish flopping around out of water!
Thank you finally someone gets it! You flippidy flop around so much.
Currently have a lvl 31 Female Asura Elementalist called Neevi Illumaflow
Neevi seems very Asura to me, but the second name sounds like a lab drainage system, sorry it’s just what I hear
My lil Ranger buddy is Wikk the Ecologist, and his pets Darwin the Fern Wolf and Nikolai the River Drake (see what I did there with the names)
:D
Well mine is black and grey with a light underbelly, kind of a cross between a panther and a cat that used to live near my house.
Daggers are small and easy to wield, so if you are going for a traditional mage look it still would not break your characters aesthetic
Earth is what I have been struggling with the most, tbh
The only thing I can think of right now, and this is a huge stretch, would be some of the armor from Kessex Hills/Harathi Hinterlands. Or even some of the Orr karma armor (not the temples). Some of the stuff with bones hanging off it. Though I’ve always gotten a more necromancer feel from those.
Another option might be the Twilight Arbor set. Beyond that, I’m not sure if there’s much to go with.
I will keep that in mind
If you want more of a water piece than just the glacial head piece, there’s a dagger skin called the Corrupted Shard.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Corrupted_Shard_%28weapon%29
In fact, there’s a merchant in Frostgorge Sound that sells the recipes for a bunch of Corrupted weapons. They’ve all got an icy look about them. His name is Rojan the Penitent.
Citadel of Flame has got some nice firey armor pieces. My favorite is the shoulders.
Some of the Inquest weapons have a bit of an electrical feel to them. You could do Crucible of Eternity for those. The focus from there is probably one of my favorite skins in the game.
Earth is probably going to be the toughest one. Off the top of my head, I can’t think of anything that’s got much of an earthy feel to it.
Earth is what I have been struggling with the most, tbh
I think it fits pretty well the nature of the ele. If you add two arah daggers it’s perfect and feels like a baws.
Very nice but the full set looks a bit sill on my ele (he is a big old norn) I will use some pieces though, maybe the shoulders.
Thanks
Hey,
I am planning ahead on my ele, in terms of how he looks and would kinda like to know what to aim for.
The idea I have in mind is an ele that has feature of all 4 elements (fire, earth, water and air) present in his weapons and armour.
I mainly play D/D but do on occasion switch my weapons. So dagger skin suggestions would be preferred, but not a necessity.
I also have the glacial head piece from the starter equipment (so I suppose that is water out the way)
Any ideas/suggestions would be a big help and give me something to aim for with this character.
It’s one of those side stories where you just kinda think, meh.
The interaction between the two is pretty stale, this is where the confusion lies really.
Though you can look at it from a third perspective, that Jennah cannot be openly entangle with Logan because she is Queen. Logan Thackery is a peasant after all. All of his influence has kinda come from him being so loyal to her, which was his downfall.
Gender as a social construct. As they have no sexes, genders don’t make any sense ( at least to me).
Was what I was thinking, so yeah they don’t really have genders, no gender roles, etc. Their appearance is just for show, so they can fall in love with whom ever they like, and not be in a homosexual relationship
