So it’s broken and does not work right. Thanks. Was wondering what the problem was.

The description says: Entangle your foe. They are immobile until the vines are destroyed.

Apparently that until the vines are destroyed is a typo.

It is just one more thing anet screwed up on. Sadly the biggest problems the ranger have is anet.

5 rangers standing still and invisible inside SM. Suddenly SM flips. Cant sweep for something that’s perma invisible.

I don’t think it should work on man made objects. It would be pretty silly to be able to apply camo on yourself on carpet or concrete floors, lol. Plus it doesn’t work with the theme of the class.

I was thinking you could only use this skill if the ranger was standing on something natural, like grass or water, or beneath a tree. That way, it’s very limited sweep for keeps as there are very few areas in inner Lowlands or SM that has shrubs and grass.

My original intent for this was to be used for scouting and roaming and not so much ninja flipping.

Regardless of intent it will be abused by players to no end. this was probably why it was removed in the first place. I think instead of a full invis it should be transforms the Ranger into either some form of vegetation (lol) or the nearest mob type WITHOUT having the invader tag over his head.

That shouldn’t be too hard to implement as its no different then drinking a morphing tonic. To make it even easier just turn players into Rabbits. Those buggers are everywhere and in some random as hell places.

As long as we could mingle with the nearest mob type and not draw aggro from them.

Bird in the game don’t really fly; they “walk” on invisible stilts, for the purpose of determining where they can and cannot get to. If your other pets are blocked by a fence, your bird is too. Flying is just an animation, but it’s still earthbound. Drives me bananas, but GW1 was the same.

They should either remove birds or give birds true flight. So annoying that the stupid bird cant actually fly.

Would be extremely useful, I think a skill like this should be given to the rangers. Have it be dispelled when one is in an enemy controlled point, i.e a tower, supply camp, keep, castle.

I have no clue, I know on the state of the game video they said they were looking at these 2 weapons but as far as I know they are not live. The problem still remains that 30 to 40% of the rangers DPS is through the pet. Until this changes rangers are going to continue to be kitten in WvW or dungeon runs.

No worries, and you are right we will still be subpar in WvW the part of the game that matters to myself.

Devs just can’t seem to get balance right on a Ranger. Our main problems right now are due to pets and just being a lame mechanic in general

Sadly our main problem is the fecal matter coding from anet and the dev team. Pets are a major problem, anet is out biggest problem.

Just because there’s a red bar on the skill doesn’t mean you won’t still hit the target, it just prevents auto attack from going.

I know that the red bar dosent mean jack, I am quite familiar with anets crappy programing I do play a ranger after all.

You can’t move side to side… I had soooooooo many bunkers/other rangers try this in tPvP as I was harassing from 2k (out of short bow range) and the just kept eating my arrows, that bug was fixed a while ago!

Lick wounds works 100% of the time until you die on a slope (needs fixing)

Can’t perma stow cause we are THE PET PROF anet doesn’t want us to perma stow they’ve said so A LOT now.

Buffs to other class’s that are doing well while ignoring the range class and putting in some poorly coded band aids that do no real help. Like buffing mual but ignoring the other attacks and issues with the nerfd great sword. Along with platitudes from the rangers enemy er the devs.

Truly disappointing, it is sad that the worst thing the ranger has going for them is the dev team.

Took my thief out last night and was like o so this is what it feels like to be useful and have good dps. Then I went back to my ranger and was like o yea this is what it feels like to have the suckiest class in the game….thank you anet dev team….at least the ranger is best at something.

Bright side is Robert didnt try to deny the class being screwed over and left out when he posted in this thread.

To be fair, the other classes didn’t get Robert Hrouda to post in their respective forums. One problem at a time guys.

I’d gladly welcome pet changes over any of the other stuff you listed since they’re active all the time.

And it did us how much good to have him here? WVW were still screwed in, only thing that really matters imo.

Poor AI mob fights don’t do it for me and the mob fights in this game are nothing but poor ai. Dragon encounters for example.

As I’ve said before – I am not on the balance team… at best I can present things and harp on issues and constantly bring them up to keep them in focus, and to remind the people on the team and who make the decisions in the end that it is an issue that needs to get resolved. I’m a dungeon content designer who plays ranger at a high level, and that is why I am in the meetings, to be a representative for that sect (for lack of a better word).

This thread and my presence really isn’t damage control, otherwise I would have failed pretty hard at it in business terms. Making a visible list of issues to bring up with devs and allowing non-devs to see it isn’t exactly good damage control since it can set up high expectations, and the only reason this thread has reached the size it has (I feel) Is because I am posting in it; drawing even more attention that the topic would have garnered otherwise. So if anything my coming here has served only to shine a brighter light on the improvements needed to the ranger/pet/player dynamic (trademark).

How does the customer reach the dev team or are they just totally out of touch with the customer?

I say go for it, its been long enough they should have resolved this by now. Once (ha) they get pets fixed then they can re work the beastmastery line and introduce pets back for those who would like to have a pet be a critical part of their build.

But right now, enough bs from them lets get a fix out and get us on equal ground with the other class’s.

I’m just curious what the reasoning is behind asking for ranger/pet damage to be split 90/10, or whatever – what does this solve, exactly? The current pet mechanic is simply broken; tweaking numbers isn’t going to address the core issues, it’ll just make us slightly less handicapped. I suspect that just tweaking the numbers would do absolutely nothing to address the desirability of rangers for groups, either – why bring a class that’s going to have 10-15% of its damage dead most of the time when you could have a class unburdened by a sad core mechanic?

90/10 split ranger/pet would improve things a ton.

The sad part is their is not enough talent at anet to get pets working properly. Infact no company has been able to get a good AI programmed and some of them have a ton more resources. If they had then people wouldnt be looking to pvp for a challenge as a good ai could give it to them.

Their really is no chance of anet to get this right, and with wvw being an end game of theirs it is something they need to get the ranger working well in. I suppose I should be happy that no one can program a good ai, other wise we may have skynet and other nasty things.

Anet may have amazing people, although getting pets working right and in a timely manner just is not going to happen. Peters already proved what his word was worth.

I use the long bow and it makes me cry. The range is ok, not great even traited. But watching the warrior next to me walk a few feet in front of me, and using kill shot out damage me by 700% or more.

I realize that pets are not going to be an easy fix and that it is just not changing a few numbers. We also know that much more is wrong with rangers than just their pets especially in wvw. Would be nice to have some information on what was decided about the class, what they are currently working on and what they plan on working on for the next patch. How much time the rangers have been slotted for with the balance team for the next patch etc.

I appreciate the reply, I realize that things can come up and derail the team although I would prefer to have the info of this is what was decided, this is what we are starting with and this is what we decided did not matter etc. Frustrating being in the state we are when sitting next to me I have a warrior, mocking me that their range is actually useful and a thief who taking out targets in melee range with no trouble with both class’s bringing so much more than the ranger….thank god our groups messer and guardian had sick kids so our class didn’t look that much weaker.

I realize that things may be added as you go, although at this point the team has to be working on items already just curious what they are and hoping they are more than health pool fixs for ravens etc.

Here is the solution,
The ranger has already suffered enough due to anet so lets just get this awesome solution implemented.

Take pets out of the game, give all the damage back to the ranger and once er if anet ever fix’s pets then reintroduce them to the ranger class as an optional component in the beast master line.

Pets are broken, the devs know it the customer knows it, the game was in development for how long and has been out now for how long? Enough is enough already.

What I mean is that they won’t add visible pieces of armor for pets, that would entail a huge amount of extra work for the devs.

Job security for them yo.

I like the idea of barding and of being able to outfit them in light/medium/heavy if they could handle it. Could even give pets abilitys based on armor type they are wearing allowing us to choose it, or the pets standard f2 skill.

I forgot to mention before, but really the cooldown on signet of stone could be altered as an alternative to pet dodging.

At the moment it gives 6 seconds of invulnerability but has a cooldown of 120 seconds. It could be get say, 40 seconds cooldown but 3 seconds of invulnerability. I believe that it is instant cast at the moment and could be used as another way of allowing people to have the invulnerability effect of a doge.

I think its interesting the idea of having them do an evasion move every time you recall them to yourself when you are in combat. Each family of pet could have their own skill. For example the Devourer family could use the ‘Devourer Retreat’ (tunneling skill) as soon as you recall them, and perhaps birds could fly above combat in the way flying AI enemies sometimes do.

Signets is a horrid way to go, under no circumstances should the solution be put into a skill. We should not be forced to give up a useful skill for bandage fix to poor programing. We already give up enough as it is with the pet being a portion of our damage.

There have been some calls for perma-stowed pets, and while I have said this in other areas I will say it again here. I don’t think we will let you perma-stow pets – the main reason being we want the player to be interacting with the pet, and the pet to be part of the identity of the player. The role of ranger is to to have a pet in our game, and with that comes a bit of extra micromanagement that comes with the package. Right now the micromanage is difficult and more tools are desired, and I honestly feel that once we make micromanaging pets easier, more responsive, and better in general that players won’t mind that they don’t have perma-stow capabilities.

It is unfortunate that you feel this way, as pets will never actually be of real use to the ranger. Their simply is not enough talent to program a truly good ai and with out that pets will be a detriment to the class. Their should be an option to allow a ranger to be just as competent with out their pet as with their pet, let the customer decide what works best for their vision of the game and not some one from management. And if you really wanted pets to be a part of the ranger why after all this time can we not name them properly? I.E. Have the name stick.

I’ll admit I don’t WvW as much as I likely should. When I do though, I tend to avoid the larger battles due to culling and those pesky stealth thieves who seem to pick my Anet tag out of the crowd and proceed to stick daggers in my spine.
When I WvW, I tend to run off into areas where I can get the drop on someone who is running to an objective that is contested. Rangers are really powerful in 1v1, especially when you can get the jump on someone and have good daze\evasion. When I am caught up ikittenerg trying to push back another zerg, I tend to keep my pet in pacifist mode so it doesn’t go running off to its death.
In a 1v1-3 situation though, double hyenas and a trusty spider can be a real game changer and difference maker.

The lb is quite weak in wvw and does no where near the damage a warrior and a rifle can dish out, especially with their useful skills like F1. Our traps are sub par compared to other class’s traps. Spike Trap vs Needle Trap for instance.

And as has been mentioned if you are playing against a competent thief our pets are a detriment to us giving the theif easy c&d.

And if we are forced to have pets and the poor ai that comes with them will they at least be fixed. My birds cant fly as an example. Jumping Puzzles, Cliffs, Keep walls.

I appreciate you trying to fix the ranger class, I just wish it was going better. Pets are only a part of the problem, long bows, nerfed gs damage, anet etc are just some of the many that plague us.

Here’s a thought I just had.

What if we made f3 use a defensive dodge skill instead of returning to the player, and we re-did the “Guard” and “Avoid Combat” button to better serve the function of “return and Heel” and “Attack and be aggro”

So it would be f1 to attack target, f2 to use special skill, f3 to use defensive ‘dodge’ skill, and our stance button would then be tweaked.

Would this mean we could then customize where these and other attacks are on our hot bars? If not then I have to say no thank you, although please keep trying.

P.S. I still want a return to me command for the pet, it’s AI is just not good enough to have it roaming all feral and stuff

About Traps

I dont know if devs are reading every topic in every forum but i will try to put an idea in the table.
I never was fun of builds that are to focused in some skills.For example i dislike the fact that Trap Rangers and only Trap Rangers are using the Traps as utility skills.I would like to see some other builds choosing some trap.And the opposite,Trap builds choosing a signet for example,but this is another conversation-topic.
So i thought a easy way that,maybe, would make traps viable in other builds.
How about making traps triggerble?
The idea is to make the fire trap so you can shoot some flaming arrows in some cond builds,so you wont have to wait someone to step on it.
I think it would mess a lot some builds and some traits but i think it would be a nice idea to work with it

Traps are useful for any build, unlike spirits I’d say almost all builds benefit from using them at least occasionally. With 30 points in Marksmanship you can make excellent use of frost trap for chilling opponents, poison is always useful on mobs that heal a lot and other players, spike trap is good in PvP just for the immobilize and cripple, and flame + frost traps are always useful in dungeons for the combo fields alone. If you choose to do so, you can specialize in traps to max their damage output. I see no issue with that except for the fact that trap traits are for some inexplicable reason in the skirmishing line.

I have never noticed an immobilize with my spike trap, I use it although no immobilize and the tool tip does not mention one that I noticed. It seems the thief has better traps than we do imo.

I am still here and watching. I’m currently composing a list of ideas and statements from this thread to bring to our balance meetings (held multiple times per week), that I can present to at least talk about with the group.
I go to the meetings as a representative for rangers and dungeons, since I play both of those things extensively. Here’s how my list is looking so far:

Core problems: (Note: we are very aware of both of these things)
-Pet AI.
-Pet management tools

Things to investigate:
-Pets auto attacks only hitting a single target.
-On “return” command, your pet gains swiftness so it can escape out of red rings more easily.
-A button that makes your pet momentarily not take damage. A sort of “Dodge” button for you to control. This is mainly due to us making sure players know how to use their dodge-roll or damage mitigation skills, which pets don’t have, and don’t always know how to escape properly when recalled without a direct pet swap.
-Pet/minion AR that is shared with the master’s stats.
-More defensive pet skills.
-Vigor applied to pets turns into swiftness or protection.
-In dungeons, pet’s get more health/armor.

As for things like adding a button that is a kind of dodge, this is a poor idea…..do not do it! Their are more than enough things for a ranger to try and watch and manage let alone this.

Add to the fact that the game is already known as not being handicap friendly this would be yet another mistake and one that would isolate players who are handicapped. People have already asked that we be able to re arrange our hot bars and the order skills are displayed with no luck, adding yet another button would just compound the issues.

Lets get rid of pets before we do something like that! Would solve issues with the botters, agony resistance our lack of dps due to pets and their ease of kiting and or killing.

I wound up farming and selling on the ah then purchased exotic armor and weapons. Also wound up making a crafter to help with making what I couldnt find or didnt want to purchase.

With the recent patch doing events like the claw of jormag is extremely painful. Is their a way for me to tell what characters have done it for the day? I cant recall if I have done it on a character…..infact I am sure my mind is suppressing the horrors of anets poor coding and guesting mistake.

Guild Armor Question

Is their any way to have a guild emblem on a set of heavy armor and not have it look like crap?

The draconic armor looks good although the heavy guild armor is not good looking at all. The medium armor is ok, have not seen the light.

Any ways would like the draconic armor to look like draconic armor yet have the guild emblem on it.

I don’t really play a theif, got mine to the 70s and then stopped for months, came back just hit 80 and as such I do not really want to make comments or ideas on how to fix them. How ever from my other character the issue does not seem to be stealth so much as poor coding from anet resulting in the culling issue and I do not feel that the class should be punished for anets mistake. Sadly I also do not believe anet has the talent to resolve the culling issue.

Thanks for the replies, I do know that generally anet themselves probably wouldn’t instaban some one but I have heard rumors that there is an auto-ban algorithm or something of the sort so that was my main concern.

Obviously they haven’t clarified exactly how it works but I think that only kicks in after repeated transactions. Every time I’ve heard of it happening it was for things like sending large amounts to gold to everyone in their guild or repeatedly gifting gold to a friend or family member.

How sad, what a way to grief some one.

we have 2 computers in my house and sometimes the kids are on mine doing homework so I play on theirs. is that going to present a problem logging in with 2 different ip’s?

You will be fine, I play from different IP’s all the time. Some times I am at home, other times at a friends house, various work sites and have played from the hospital and from on the road.

An e-mail usually gets sent to me asking if this is me and if I want to authorize it.
