AMD or Intel CPU ?

Console development is immaterial because this game will never be targeted at consoles.

Those doing cross-development start with an engine that’s already supported on consoles and PCs and it’s the engine developer that worries over thread balancing issues.

The new consoles consist of what’s equivalent to the CPU portion of two Athlon 5350s (each is a quad on it’s own). One is roughly 30% of the performance of an i5-4590K Intel quad core in multithreaded benchmarks. The primary advantage of consoles is that you can target it’s hardware exactly. No need to generalize for an unknown hardware platform. That’s also why the graphics API on those can be closer to the metal upfront. No need to abstract.

When the development started for this game, creating (well modifying) their own game engine, all you had were dual and quad cores. Windows 7 wasn’t out yet and Dx10 wasn’t enough of a draw for gamers to target it or do 64-bit port because Vista wasn’t catching on.

The Haswell rehash, the “Devil’s Canyon” line of CPUs such as the i7-4790K uses a new TIM to significantly reduce heat build-up by 10-15 degrees Celsius over the original Haswell CPUs. Likely Broadwell will incorporate this new TIM as well.

Now you may believe that someday ANet will update the core graphic’s engine to support Dx11/12 and have a renderer that scales to number of cores you are sporting. but I don’t see that day coming soon. Or even two years down the line.

Back to what the OP was asking I reiterate. There’s nothing wrong with choosing AMD if you play a wide range of GPU dependent games or use software frequently that can scale up to whatever number of cores you have. But what is important in this game, right now, is per core performance in which case Intel is the winner hands down.

3710g for a perm hair style contract!?

But it’s unlimited on every character you ever make. 4000g translates now into roughly 160 Self-Style Hair kits. Now you have the ability to go crazy. It’s all about convenience.

Korossive, was the reason you only changed hair 3 times the cost? If you put that all behind you with a one time fee then how many times would you change your hair? It’s like the unlimited use gathering tools. You look at it from a purely economic nature the repayment time is huge. But never ever needing to worry about it? It makes it worthwhile.

AMD or Intel CPU ?

Behellagh.1468

Looking at the current steam survey 94.46% of users have 2-4 physical cores (meaning i3’s count as dual cores and i7s count as quads). Ignoring the single core systems that leaves 2.14% with more than 4 cores. Now why would anyone optimize their game or spend the effort to let their game scale beyond 4 cores on the PC. Now if you get that ability for “free” form licencing a game engine that someone else developed and maintains, that’s a different matter but rolling your own 5 years ago?

Back then you have a main thread and a rendering thread and a bunch of support/utility threads. The advantage of running on a quad is that the utility threads don’t impede on any CPU time the two main threads. And since a thread doesn’t run exclusively on a particular core, the entire workload is spread across all cores which is why you see activity on all cores although you may see a couple of cores markedly higher than the rest.

And where ilr are you getting your customer satisfaction numbers? Forums are such a lousy sample of either the player base in general or an indication of satisfaction specifically since there is always a greater likelihood that upset players will post while happy players don’t.

Also doesn’t help the balance when calling someone a “troll” is an infraction while calling someone a “white knight” isn’t. Both are pejorative terms at opposite ends of the spectrum in my book. Both should be added to the “kitten” list or on another forum where I post “unicorn”.

The interesting story of Chaos of Lyssa

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

It took around 9 hours to add 4 million buy orders. And during that time the low sell order went from 157g to 173g. However supply started to slip at that point from that point and once supply dipped under 40 from mid 60s, prices spiked into the 280g range.

From there players start raising their bids which limits how for the price can drop when supply recovers. New supply will lower the low sell price via undercutting but unless elevated buy orders are cleaned out there is a lower limit. Right now the recipe is at 190g with supply in the 120s but the profit after the 15% is only 2.2%. Before the surge of 1c bids there wasn’t any profit on the item for flipping.

I’m guessing there are still 30 or so sell orders at 280g and up and if supply ever drops back down to 30 or less, there will be another price spike.

Gold wars 2 Question

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

Here’s the thing. Current high bid and current low sale price doesn’t necessarily means those are the prices players are selling to and buying from. They could be localized min/maxes based on the ebb and flow of trading at the moment you look in on them.

There are a number of items on the TP that have ridiculous spreads and profit margins. If you see an item with a sale price of 5+g with only copper prices for bids, believe me nobody is selling to high bidder with that kind of spread. That’s "let me throw a couple of coppers at it and if someone is really, really dumb/distracted/in a hurry then I might get a deal of a lifetime. But that’s not flipping, at least efficiently.

What we don’t have and no site has because ANet doesn’t make it available, is transaction volume or even a range of what prices those transactions were made at. Without those two bits of hard data it becomes tea leaf reading of the charts at gw2tp.com for transaction prices and guessing volume. I’ve compared the volume question with trying to guess volume of a brand of cereal at the grocery store if you simply visit daily and count the boxes on the shelf and try to draw a conclusion on popularity. If you stop in more frequently to count you may get a better picture but it’s still not the information the store gets based on what’s ringing up at the register.

Also demand numbers on the TP can’t be read at face value. How many of those bids are within 10%, 20% of the current high bid versus absurdly low bids. Number of sale orders tend to be a bit more realistic but that still doesn’t mean that all the items are priced for the current trading range. Some may reflect prices that the item traded at but the price has collapsed but the item wasn’t pulled for sale. Some may be the result of long term speculation, X will sell for Y someday so I post it for that price now. Some may simply be there as storage, like renting an infinite storage unit.

Believe me, if it was as easy as looking at gw2tp.com and sort by decreasing spread, nobody would be flipping anymore because the spreads would virtually gone.

"Griefing" steam champ at the reactor

Behellagh.1468

Geeze, makes me sorry using the “G” word.

All I’m saying was it used to be one way, where it’s done after FE, at least on JQ during the times of the day I run it, and lately that event is being done up just before FE finishes and in a couple of cases the crowd around waiting for the barrier to be dropped was taunted by someone saying the lock was intentional to deny those doing FE from another chest.

I’m simply curious if this is a new trend or not and if others have seen it. It seems obvious now that my previous experiences of always waiting until after weren’t the norm.

I’ve also had players start to kite critters into me while I was waiting for the Vets to spawn during the run up to FE. As in run into a chamber, run by one or more critters, not attacking them, then run up to my character, pause and then run out of the chamber. Critters get within range and aggro on me since the original player is out of range. It’s a mild annoyance at most but it’s new. I’m not a bot simply because I’m not running around, hopping like a jumping bean.

It’s the change in behavior that I’m curious about during FE.

My other thread on announcing group/champ events on /map or not. If I see a group/champ event starting I announce it. The more the merrier is my take. I see no reason to keep it to yourself. During the Q champ trains if I found myself near a newly spawned bandit champ, I simply waited for the train to arrive so everyone gets to do it (maybe take out most of his bodyguards and the cannon to pass time). I was simply being considerate.

Trait system on new characters overhauled.

Megaserver tech means underflow zones are created for normally lightly populated maps so multiple servers can share the same zone. This also means that boss events have a train like schedule.

Overhaul to skins. Now account bound and reusable with transmutation cost. Downside is you can no longer move upgrades. It’s buy again, salvage (if you are able) or the gem store extractor.

Most champs have been downgraded to vets in the 1-15 zones.

For the LS, once you activate a chapter during it’s initial two weeks, you can play it whenever. Even with characters you create after that chapter has passed.

That’s all I got.

OP needs to learn 2 things: The rules https://www.guildwars2.com/en/legal/guild-wars-2-rules-of-conduct/ and the definition of griefing.

As I said earlier, that’s why I put griefing in quotes. I know it’s not griefing, just like jumping the train wasn’t. But it’s a chest. It’s in the same local as a Boss event. You need the defeated CLEANER to finish charging the key. Everyone gets the reward if they participate. Why not let everyone do the event? Seems terribly selfish and to taunt the crowd in local by saying they did it already so everyone finishing FE can’t. That’s just rude.

They worked to find the key and infuse it. They decided to open it. They opened it.
/thread

The last thing they need to infuse it is the spark from the defeated CLEANER. So they already had an charged key, use it, find another one, do FE to get CLEANER and then they charge the other three elements the next time they do FE? That just seems odd to me. Out of order.

It does makes sense that those rushing to the next boss may want to do it before.

As for me, tonight those who did FE did it after, like it’s been done every time, other than the recent handful of times, I’ve done FE in the last 19 months. And tonight the keymaster even waited until the entire crowd gathered before using it and let everyone drop their traps before calling it up.

That’s why I put grief in quotes. I know it’s not griefing but in all the time I’ve done FE the Steam Ogre was always the bonus round right after but in the last month the fact it’s locked because it was recently done is new.

Knowing it’s a 10 minute lock (I got the 30 minute number from someone last night pounding their head on the barrier with the other 40 players) that means it’s likely being done while everyone is protecting CLEANER in the main FE room or during the two minutes FE is up. That’s even sadder since it’s done while everyone else is distracted and won’t notice it being done and they can run in during the last minute and still get the FE chest.

However, given that the exchange rate has actually dipped in the last week, I think it’s safe to say that people WILL be buying gems to exchange for gold, in ever-increasing ratios, as the price continues to climb.

The black market gold supply got hammered about a week ago – whether it was nuking a bunch of bots, banning stolen storage accounts, or something totally different, we won’t know, but the black market rate spiked, which should push the gold to gem price down.

Only if purveyors of those services go legit by converting gems. It’s still much better than the legit route but the risk of banning may not be worth the extra gold anymore. ($7-8 per 100g Vs $13-14 with gems).

Why do some players do the Steam Champ at the Thaumanova Reactor just before the Fire Elemental so it’s locked for players wanting to do it after? And then brag about it? Players get the matrix cube key, charge it up wait for FE to finish and all interested participants to gather, put in the key and find out it’s locked out because it was run within the last 30 minutes. Usually after trying it and finding it’s not working someone chimes in on map that they had just run it to screw over everyone else.

This is starting to become annoyingly frequent. “Traditionally” it’s saved until after FE so everyone picks up more loot but since it looks like it can be locked out if done before FE when few will notice the barrier down. Why grief, if you can call it that? Why?

a8-6600K even at 4ghz is a slow processor compared to any of the last 3 generations of Intel quads. That’s just the way it is. On top of it the A8 doesn’t have an L3 cache like the FX-4350 has and it’s slow at 4.2GHz. The individual cores of the current AMD CPU architecture significantly under perform Intel’s cores. And with a game that is CPU bound more often the GPU bound, it’s the performance of an individual core that limits the upper frame rate of this game. I enjoy two shotting critters with my level 80 in a level 10 zone, it at least makes me feel powerful and heroic than outnumbered and outclassed.

As for event scaling. There seems to be a bump where the time required to complete the event increases dramatically with 5 or 6 compared to 2 or 3 only to drop back down once the number of players is greater than 10. The “dirty mole rats” in Diessa comes to mind. Total number scales to players present but it takes a certain number of players to increase the spawn rate thus slowing the event down.

I am going to beg to differ on that now :-)

4790K OC to 5.0ghz, 8GB Ram OC to 2100Mhz, 280x OC 12% above reference.

Solid 28FPS at Maw (easily 80+ players on the screen)

This is another case where the colloquial definition of a word has a very different meaning from how it’s used in a particular subject matter. The same way in science the Theory means a widely tested and accepted fact when theory to the public means a conjecture and supposition.

When Smooth uses monetary value it’s in the very specific definition of Economics. Gems in and of themselves have no value and therefore can’t be used to as a transitory property to equate cash that has a monetary value to in-game gold earned by playing the game.

How to sell an item on the TP

in Black Lion Trading Co

Setting your own price: Exactly what the title says. Click match highest seller and lower price 1c below. (tip: if you click the copper field at the top and press down arrow or mouse wheel down, the price will lower by 1c)
Pro: You will sell your item before the 7 already listed and get more money than Option 1.
Con: It takes 3 seconds to change the price.

You cleverly left out a second con. This is also not instant.

Why would you ever click Meet highest buyer after reading this? I’m serious. Please tell me the reason. I want to know.

You already know why. Mainly, some people are better off getting money now.

If you want other reasons:

  • If the buy price is 80c and the sell price is 1s, some people aren’t interested in haggling over a few coppers.
  • Worrying about how to wring out every possible copper of profit from every item they ever encounter is not a source of enjoyment for some.
  • Some people feel undercutting on sell orders by 1c is dirty pool.
  • This is a game that could be unplugged at any time ANet desires. Some people don’t care how much fake money they amass, since it’s fake money that could disappear any time. When the zombie apocalypse strikes, you may start wishing you had a pile of real gold instead of ANet gold.
  • The time that you spent earning more fake money could have been spent earning real money.

Don’t take any of this to imply that I think nobody should enjoy playing the market. I just have difficulty with a mindset that seems to think everybody should be playing the market.

If you agree with Eggman’s reasons not to use the TP beyond selling to the highest bidder then you surrender the right to ever complain about flippers earning more because all they are doing is picking up those coppers you and players like you decided to leave on the table because you can’t be bothered.

@Nerelith

If you were involved at all with City of Heroes then I can understand why here it feels like the devs are ignoring us because in CoH you really felt you could have a two way conversation with Paragon’s devs. They would tell us why X was hard or why Y got delayed. If you were willing to engage the devs with a modicum of respect you didn’t get the impression that they were treating you like mushrooms. But CoH was a fairly tight community especially toward the end.

There’s 10x more people just in the EU/NA that bought this game than CoH/CoV. That simply increases the number of people who will take offense that the Devs aren’t listening to them. The Noise to Signal ratio would be so high if they attempted anything that resembled the dialog we had in CoH/CoV that it’s understandable why they don’t bother.

If every post listing intent is treated as a sacred blood oath I wouldn’t want to poke my head out again until I’m 100% sure.

But it’s not a buff, it’s used to level your luck. Doesn’t matter if you level your luck gradually or all at once you will still end up with the same amount of luck.

Only drops rarely during the Winterday event (possibly only the first). So extremely limited supply. And if you are someone who likes to be able to change their looks then it may be worth that much to them.

Last one that was on the market was priced at 4999g. Time before that one was listed at 3300g. Last time there was more than one on the market at the same time was early March 2013 when they were priced around 170g.

Rare doesn’t describe it’s infrequency of one being for sale on the market.

From a price performance prospective they chose the i5-4590 over the 4460 because if prices in the UK/EU is anything like the US or South Korea, where this blog post is from, the price increase it negligible (US $200 Vs $190) but gives you a higher Turbo frequency (3.7GHz V 3.4GHz) even though it’s only 100MHz difference in standard clock rate.

The FX-8350 is fine if you are also planning to use your PC with apps that scale extensively with number of cores, in which case those apps tend to to noticeably better with the AMD processor. Software development, 3D rendering, video compression, etc. But when games are GPU bound, any middle to high end quad core or above perform similarly. There are very few if any games where 8 slower cores found in the FX are better than four faster cores. And for a game that is CPU bound that use only a few cores worth of performance, like GW2, Intel will crush AMD.

Of course OCing can alter these comparisons but I’m talking standard clock rate here, just gaming, not gaming and streaming/recording just to be clear before we get linked to a Russian site extolling the virtue of massively overclocked FX CPUs.

a flipper

We are not talking about one single flipper, but a population of them. Reducing the expected cycles/transactions (in case you need a stat lesson, expected value is an weighted average and we are speaking in decimals, not whole numbers) an item goes through before becoming a final good would create lower average prices, as every cycle adds cost and inefficiency through the 15% TP tax.

The rest of your scenario is again irrelevant because you either chose not to read or decided deliberately to keep pushing your own narratives which are irrelevant to the discussion.

Until you first said flippers cause prices to increase, this post, I didn’t have a problem with anything you were saying but I can’t agree with that notion. There isn’t anyway they can raise the average price when they can’t control supply. Too many other players including other flippers will keep the price in check, within a trading range, due to undercutting. Prices increasing, and I’m talking average price, have more to do with changes in supply rate or actual demand rate due to content changes than a segment of TP users trying to squeeze a few % out of the inefficiency of players selling to the highest bidder and buying from the lowest seller.

You haven’t read anything I’ve said because you continue not to address any of my points or questions. You simply say I’m too dumb to understand your point or this thread.

First person view?

If they add 1st person then players will ask to see their arms and weapons they are wielding. It also means higher rez textures because if the camera normally can’t get too close you can cheat making super high rez textures. Also the flip/tumble animations in first person could get a bit disorienting during combat not to mention the hit on frame rate because your PoV is swinging wildly about.

what strawman @DaveGan

You’ve been associating me with “2000g dusk flipping”, most likely because you’ve failed to read my posts. Anyone who disagrees falls into the category of “anti TP tycoon” and inherit all of the quality you’ve concluded they must have.

When I said flipping increased prices I absolutely meant they increased average cost, even if only by a “couple copper/silver” as Aidan conceded might be possible. Those coppers and silvers are where a lot of hardcore TP traders build their wealth so it’s kind of ironic to discount it (see the replies in a recent thread arguing about whether 1c undercuts were significant or not).

Given that I mentioned slight shifts in “flipping index of probably between 0 and 1”, I was clearly not talking about significant spikes. For example, put a gate or DR on buy orders and massive stacks of T1 mats can no longer be bought for upcrafting. As the T2 supply dries up, people become encouraged to promote their own mats, removing some middlemen and T1 transactions that were arguably unnecessary.

But apparently you weren’t reading and now you come back with another strawman about speculation.

Explain, in steps, how a flipper could increase the price of an item when they don’t control supply? What prevents other players, flippers and non-flippers, from undercutting their sell orders to keep prices in check? That is what I’m not understanding by your statement that flippers raise prices.

Flippers will undercut one another to move their merchandise first because it’s all about turn around speed to recoup your capital for the next round of buying. And while I understand the individual simply underselling them on 1 of something isn’t a threat, there are a lot of individuals selling 1 of something due to the size of the player base. Posting your items in the upper portion of the daily/weekly trading range may maximize your income but that in and of itself doesn’t raise the overall average price.

So please, educate me how flippers can raise the price of items with the competitive pressure of selling guarantees a constant stream of undercutters to their selling price.
