Yes, the stuff that has disappeared forever (for now) are elements of town clothes that they didn’t make into skins. Bunny Ears, several pairs of glasses, boxing gloves.

Here’s the problem. You really should go Intel for CPU, preferably a true quad core. But that’s costly but the alternative, going AMD, will be an impediment since when the game binds up it binds up on the CPU side. However going Intel will likely mean you are forced to suffer playing under the Intel HD Graphics 4600 which is pretty low end.

Current crop of Asus M32 series only has VGA and HDMI out to your monitor. You can get an HDMI to DVI if your monitor doesn’t have HDMI in. But I can’t find any specs about what’s under the cover beyond a 300 watt PSU. The manual doesn’t even talk about cracking open the case for adding anything.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883220739

Not sure if I recommend this without opening it and getting a better idea what’s inside.

Edit: By “what’s under the cover” in terms of number of memory and expansion slots. They obviously like CPU, amount and speed of ram and size of the hard drive.

Supersampling is a setting in the graphics options. It’s not on by default even at the high default setting.

Zergplay is when there are a lot of players on screen in combat (or not) like World Vs World and world boss events. The game becomes very CPU bound at those times even with top most end overclocked Intel CPUs. GPU makes little difference in those situations.

1. A few coppers is relative, they are 24 copper each. At the very least in any race’s city at the merchant (stacks of coins on map). Other locations are listed in the wiki.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Gathering_tool

Also this list was written long before they changed up the “New Player Experience” and they removed material nodes out of the lowest level areas on the starter maps. You need to be in a level 6 or 7 area for nodes to show up on the mini map. I think you get a full set at level 9 for free. Lumber and Ore gathering tools are good for 100 “swings” while Foraging Sickles are good for 50.

As you level up and move into higher level areas, you will need higher level and more expensive gathering tools.

10. ? means Renown Heart. Those Hearts you see on the map (assuming you are zoomed in) and and mini map. Upon completion of the “quest” the “quest” giver unlocks and turns into an NPC vendor who can buy junk and stuff but also have items unique to them for karma. Karma is a currency you get for doing Renown Hearts and Dynamic Events. I would argue the notion of “great” stuff but certainly nothing you can buy off the Trading Post or armor/weapon vendors.

Like the Dx11/12/Mantle/Vulkan crowd you are under the assumption that they should be actively rewriting their engine for every new thing that comes out.

That kind of rework doesn’t happen in the real world unless you either have a lot of money coming in, you sell your own engine or you share your engine across multiple games. It’s a resources needed/cost Vs payback decision. Look how long it took them just so we can have some minor camera adjustments.

Actually you can’t tell how much of the CPU is being used by the game from the data provided.

yes you can, look at core temp it shows per load per ‘core’. We know that 2 cores = 1 FPU.

do the math.

No you can’t because you are assuming the OP only has the game running. What that is showing is the CPU running at around 75% for the system and not the game. We need the taskmanager up to see the game’s share. I notice Skype is running on his taskbar.

And why do you keep focusing on FPUs? The vast majority of code being executed by any app is integer and not floating point or SSE. Again a module is no different than an Intel HT core in this regard. Both can run two threads and those two threads must share the single FPU.

The FX Bulldozer architecture blurs the line in determining what’s a core and what isn’t. Each module has two integer units (2 cores) and one floating point unit (1 core). The integer cores share a single L1 instruction cache (1 core) but each has it’s own L1 data cache (2 cores) but the module has a shared L2 unified cache (1 core). AMD marketing went nuts when they found out about the twin IUs per module and labeled them cores and has made the whole issue a confusing mess to talk about.

Nobody is arguing that Dx11 or 12 wouldn’t be a lot faster. The argument is whether ANet feels the cost to do is worthwhile and that it’s not a trivial, quick change.

People have linked to Microsoft’s own guides to porting across Dx versions and the changes from Dx10 to Dx11 are relatively minor compared to the massive number of things that have to change going from Dx9 to Dx10. And that isn’t even changing the rest of the renderer code to multithread to scale to the number of available cores.

Of course it will look nicer. Of course it would likely run faster. But if ANet decides that the development time isn’t worth it’s …

FX CPUs are crippled by having one FPU per Module. SO… your FX4xxx is a dual core CPU, your FX6xxx is a triple core CPU, and your FX8xxx is a quad core cpu. The additional core count is just a thread that is attached to the single FPU to ‘increase’ threaded performance, VERY similar to how Intels Hyper-threading works that is the inherent issue with the FX line. Also, the FX line’s single core performance is slower then the previous Phenom II line.

But as you explained it the FX module is no more crippled with one FPU than an Intel core with HyperThreading enabled is since in both cases there is only one FPU supporting two threads. The FX-8xxx series is functionally equivalent to an i7 desktop CPU; the ability to run 8 threads but only having 4 FPUs.

Again there is no “crippling”.

Behellagh, if there’s a lost of performance of various fps then yes, it cripples. I never said that pcie speed have an enormous impact in performance.
But if lowest fps in those tests are 36 for x4, 43 for x8 and 49 for x16, I had a 20% more fps from x4 to x8 (2.0 x8 to x16) and 14% increase from 3.0 x8 to x16.

Also, the game doesn’t work using cores, but threads, and cores manage them. This game has one main thread (this is why single core performance matters) and a lot of secondary thread spread all over the cores.
But when things get heavier, what matters is single core performance because of the main thread that can only be managed by one core (and here is where the amount of cores doesn’t matter).
A 4 core cpu will use all 4 cores and a 8 core cpu will use all 8 cores when playing gw2. The only thing that changes is how much work each core does.

Which is what I’ve said in the past as well as here. The game has numerous threads running but only a few that approaches an individual core’s maximum use. Maybe I’m describing it poorly but having more cores won’t benefit the performance of a single thread. Overall the game’s performance in my experience on multiple quad core systems is 50-75% of the entire CPU. That’s why I’ve said it uses 2 to 3 cores of performance but spread across all cores on the CPU.

But it still boils down to a single thread can not exceed the performance of a single core. One thread running using four cores won’t perform any better than if it running on one (ignoring Turbo modes and resource degradation you get on FX modules).

I think the point being made here Ravenmoon is the difference between 16.7ms per frame and 50ms is invalidated by server latency as well as differences in network latency between players. A player with a 50ms network latency advantage at 20FPS could still get their action in before you at 60FPS.

And yes, there are a lot of people who would laugh at your 60FPS minimum and ultra settings or it’s beneath you and the game should feel honored to have you still playing it attitude.

The game doesn’t care about how many cores you have =/= the game only uses one core.
What I said is core performance is the first thing to look. You can have as many cores as you want, that if their’re weak, gw2 won’t run really well. That’s why when you reach the sufficient amount of cores to handle gw2, having more doesn’t have such an impact.

And about pcie, I did tests in gw2 and there is an improvement. I tested 3.0 x16, x8 and x4 (to simulate 2.0 x8):
- x16 had 110fps underwater, 70’s in empty map, 50’s in more heavy graphic situation and 23-24 in heavy cpu situation.
-x8 had 100 fps underwater, 60’s in empty map, 46 in more heavy graphic situation and 22-23 fps in heavy cpu situation.
- x4 had 77fps underwater, 45’s in empty map, 36 in more graphic situation and 20-21 in heavy cpu situation.

Tests were done in South east of Gendarran Fields going from water to a house with a garden and some mobs closer to Cornucopian Waypoint. Cpu situation is upper north waypoint of Rata Sum and wait fps to stabilize.

PD: All people who say pcie speed doesn’t matter only show tests done in a lot of games, BUT gw2.

Yes, you showed about a 10% difference. 10% is not “crippling” as you described PCIe 2.0 as.

FX cpu are also cripples by only having pcie 2.0.

And to be pedantic about it that’s the fault of the motherboard chipset. The FX- series doesn’t have a PCIe interface on die. The only way to support PCIe 3 on an FX motherboard is to use a PCIe 3 bridge chip like the one Asus uses in their the top end 990FX motherboards. And that is slightly smoke and mirrors since the bridge chip communicates to the 990FX over a PCIe 2.0 interface and simply couples 32 lanes of PCIe V2 bandwidth into 16 lanes of PCIe 3.0. And the 990FX is communicates to the FX- CPU over a HyperTransport 3.0 link.

And if the game is single core then why does it show up using 2-3 cores of available CPU performance on a quad core? The game doesn’t scale up to use all cores, I’ll grant you that but a lot of software has the same limitations, especially games built around Dx9.

That’s not true Ansau, the game does use more than a single core. The confusion comes from the fact that in a multithreaded program, no single thread can exceed the performance of a single core which is why people keep saying that single core performance is important. The game uses around 2 to 3 cores of performance on average, spread across all the cores on your CPU.

And please the difference in performance between a current PCIe V3.0 video card running in a V2.0 system is minor for a single video card. And the HD 7970 is a more powerful card than the R9 270x which is a OCed HD 7870 which the test at the following link concluded “In summary, no results were shocking to us with the Radeon HD 7970. See in your 2nd picture, the one with GPU-Z on it’s main page. About halfway down the right side you will see a box labeled Bus Interface listing “PCI-E 3.0 x16 & x1 1.1”. That’s the problem. Instead of the CPU is talking to the graphics card using 16 PCI-E links, it’s using only one at the lowerest transfer rate. That’s 250MB/s Vs 8000MB/s.

What the solution is, I don’t know. The extreme measure is shut down the system, pull the card and reseat it in it’s slot, after making sure their is no debris in the slot and the edge connector on the card looks alright, no foreign objects/corrosion and the like. The slot you should be using is likely the x16 (long) slot closest to the CPU if your motherboard has several.

And of course make sure you have the “latest” windows certified driver for your card installed.

There are others who have had this problem and resolved it, they may come along with other options.

You could try disabling the frame rate limiter and running the game in Windows Fullscreen. I doubt that will make a difference but at least this way you can tab GPU-Z, CPU-Z on top of the game showing it’s settings all at the same time in a screen shot.

Sorry I can’t be more helpful than that.

Well in Turbine’s defense, how to use Dx10 effectively wasn’t widely understood that soon to Vista’s release. Same could be said about the drivers and the underlying hardware architecture. But several other early adopters of Dx10 had similar problems, yes it was prettier but the frame rate cost was huge. But years of hardware advancement and driver improvements made Dx10/11 viable. Actually a lot of the Vista/Dx10 – Windows 7/Dx11 is iterative and more about stepping away from the bad reputation of those names and giving the illusion of starting fresh.

As an aside, the GT 740 and R7 250, both with GDDR5 memory, are faster than the 8800 Ultra in that HardOCP review. Both are sub $100 cards. The 8800 Ultra was an $800+ card when it was introduced. My, how time and tech flies.

For the record, you can now buy wow game time for in game gold. Bought 2 months worth for dirt cheap.

If 24K gold is cheap. Well when released Blizard set the initial price at 30K gold.

Turbine uses a common engine for DDO and LOTRO. When the Dx10 update was done in Nov 2007, both games were still subscription based. Dx11 support was added in late 2010 but very, very little in terms of features (Dx11 based Ambient Occlusion even though it can be done without Dx11) and in LOTRO Dx11 dynamic water effects.

The HardOCP article on LOTRO Dx10 upgrade pointed out at the time a massive loss in performance from Dx9 to Dx10.

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2007/11/12/lord_rings_online_dx10_patch

“When we directly compare DirectX 9 performance and DirectX 10 performance on the same graph, using the most powerful gaming video card you can currently buy, the results are quite clear. In LOTRO, the GeForce 8800 Ultra is 55% slower when using the DX10 code, than it is when using only DX9 code. We have observed similar performance penalties in the past, but we are no less frustrated to see it here.”

Which is why back in 2007, while providing visual improvements, Dx10 impacted frame rate noticeably leading to few gamers flocking to Vista for Dx10 goodness. So why develop for a platform that many gamers are hesitant to adopt? Which may be one reason why Dx9 was focused on for GW2 when it started development in 2007.

It’s the sad fact that since software isn’t something someone can physically touch, most non-programmers can’t appreciate the complexity, cleverness and scale as they can with some complex physical piece of equipment. That often leaves to the erroneous assumption that something is easy to change or easy to add something on at the last minute. It would be very different if you lead them to a warehouse size machine of intricate clockwork humming away so you can turn and ask if they think adding X into that would be easy or trivial this close to the ship date.

I came from 8 years paying and playing a subscription game that was closed down suddenly. The sense of loss and betrayal was overwhelming. I vowed never to become so emotionally involved with a game or community ever again and certainly not in the tune of over $1000.

GW2 required minimal investment and due to it’s very closed universe and lack of free character customization, there was no chance to become vested with any of my characters. I’m no more connected with them than a Diablo II character.

Edit: And unlike true F2P, there are no nasty pay walls, just minor optional nickel and diming.

Actually I’ve been “coding” for 30 plus years. It is better and cleaner to determine which API you will be using at game startup and launch a custom thread than attempting to write one monolithic renderer that can invoke multiple APIs.

This isn’t a compile time issue but a run time issue.

I also see where we are confused over the word “abstraction”. I’m using the word from a top down design PoV. To me, an API like DirectX and OpenGL are already an abstraction of the hardware. I thought you meant to create an additional level of abstraction that was API neutral. That layer would take care of massaging the data and providing setup to call the appropriate API based on user selection. That would be the wrong approach as you should be trying to get closer to the “metal” than further away.

There is a reason a number of games (Civ V, Total War series) require a relaunch when you switch between Dx9 and Dx10/11, it’s because it either launches a different version of the game with the appropriate renderer for that API baked in (Civ V) or internally launches the appropriate renderer at start up. I don’t know why you keep thinking I’m suggesting you can’t have multiple renders in the same executable, I’m suggesting you can.

On the other hand you were using “abstraction” in an language/object oriented sense. Which is fine and dandy if the project started as C++ and at the time they were anticipating adding future APIs. Now something those who only learned OO programming often don’t realize is that all the features an OO language provides to keep programmers from shooting themselves in the foot can significantly slow down the code, as well as making the executable significantly larger. But in an era of multicore, multi-gigahertz, multi gigabyte computing that shouldn’t be a problem, unless performance is utmost importance.

In my 30 plus years writing, designing and managing projects, getting it done quick is more important on a day to day basis that getting it done right, right as in well designed classes for ease of maintenance and maximum reusability. Upper management, doesn’t care about elegance of design, marketing cares only about how many new features you can have in the release and in the end all they care about is the ship date. Later if, big if, there is time between major releases you might be allowed to refactor the code into something more elegant, stable, maintainable and reusable but often clever, quick and dirty is the rule of the day and you end up with something held together with bubblegum and bailing wire that’s fragile as hell. And it’s only when it collapses under it’s own weight will those with the scheduling power listen.

Maybe you’re at a company that isn’t short sighted about proper design, strive for easily maintainable and reusable code above all else. I envy you if that’s the case.

So around 15-16 thousand gold was spent buying up most of chests. I seriously doubt they can make a profit on them. At least it’s not 10 million 1c bids to make it seem like they are in huge demand (although there are 950K at 1c).
