How is this related to NPE?

If you are asking how is engineer damage related to NPE, it’s simple: since the NPE, level 1-2 chars only have one weapon skill they can use, one healing skill and no utility skills. Engineer weapons do potato damage by themelves, you need kits to be able to do something if you don’t have traits. Since kits are utility skills, and since NPE new chars can’t use utility skills until a certain level, and then only 1 by 1 instead of 3 at lvl 1 like it was before… I think you get it.

Engineer leveling is not for the faint of heart with the NPE for sure.

I don’t understand why everyone’s getting their panties in such a bunch regarding the Beta. It’s a Beta test. It’s going to be access to a rather small section of the upcoming content and features in advance of the expansion going live in order to test for balancing issues, bugs and other erroneous problems.

Honestly, instead of stressing out or becoming incensed regarding who gets a portal or how many portals some people get or the fact that you may have not received one yet, just play the game. You may get lucky, you may not get lucky but you’re really not going to lose out on anything if you don’t.

I’m probably going to very briefly check out the Beta but not play much of it. Why? Well, because I just don’t see the point outside of testing. Everything in the Beta is subject to change and all progress on the Beta server(s) will be cleared before the expansion goes live.

There is literally no benefit gained by having access to the Beta.

Well said.

I know, lets give everyone beta access!

/sarcasm

Actually I don’t think that would be a bad idea. Better yet, test servers. The “Beta” appears to be a thinly disguised load of hype to draw attention to the expansion.

And it appears to work in some cases.

That would be a terrible idea. Anet just doesn’t have the servers dedicated to the Beta to support that. Also, it’s a Beta, not a stress test.

Well, they are going to get input from a rather narrow section of the player base then.

I guess that depends on how you define “narrow.” Sure, it won’t be a large proportion of the player base, but as long as it’s representative of the overall player population (that has access to the Silverwastes and Dry Top and is motivated to participate in a Beta test), you can work with a smallish sample and draw strong conclusions. That’s survey sampling 101.

Are the results perfect? Of course not, but you can’t ask every voter who they would vote for either. You just have to randomly select a sample and draw your conclusions from there.

Thank you. You explained my definition of “narrow sample” very well.

I can appreciate how you’re trying to turn your rage-QQ into some good old fashioned concern trolling, I really can.

It just too bad that there is an entire branch of applied statistics that demonstrates how silly and short-sided your “concern,” which I am 100% completely sure is not in any way tied to you not getting a Beta Portal drop, actually is.

Huh? I actually have no desire to get a “Beta Portal Drop.” I could care less.

Mostly just thinking a bigger and more representative sample would give better results.

But my background is in behavior analysis and marketing.

Next beta event will test how good servers can handle thousands of people pressing 1?

I dont know many people who press 1. Its an amusing accusation, but I rarely see it happen myself.

You don’t have to press 1 more than once. Just let the auto attack function have a chance to do it’s job.

One big advantage of it for ANet is that every one who gets a portal is an active player. Not like the stress test invite that went out to everyone that ever signed up for the newsletter and might have quit playing 2 years ago yet still said they wanted to do the stress test.

Sux for those who can’t make it, but the betas are for ANet’s benefit, not the player’s

Of course, ANet requires players in order for them to derive any benefit at all.

Nothing wrong with a diversified way of getting into it.

It’s not like signing up and hoping for an invite isn’t RNG.

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/claim-your-spot-in-the-next-heart-of-thorns-closed-beta/

But going into the world looking for rare portals is.

You are assuming that is the only way to get into beta. It won’t be. It’s an option. Instead of complaining, why don’t you participate and increase your chances?

I did say my time is currently limited

I spent 6 years in the military with an above average amount of work each day. I played more video games while on active duty than I have had time for since. Sorry that your lifestyle doesn’t revolve around GW2, but unfortunately for you, it isn’t Anet’s responsibility to design a game that specifically benefits you. Like Ralanost said, play more and increase your chances of a beta invite, and do pushups for being a whiny kitten.

If your lifestyle revolves around a video game, you are doing something wrong.

In the AMA stream they said at the end that Tomes will function exactly as they do now so long as you aren’t 80 yet. So they’ll bump your Rev to 80 if you so desire but won’t help post 80.

For skill scrolls, I think it’s time for me to research how to turn those into gold since there’s no reason now to spend them on unlocking skills for my alts.

I’ll just burn the rest if it’s too much trouble to spec them out.

These changes are in line with the trend in this game to make alts less attractive to create and play. Exactly how this is helping the bottom line eludes me, but on the other hand, it’s not my paycheck in question.

The best joke is going to explain to the shareholders why the game lost so much money on 4/1….love to be a fly on the wall during that board meeting…

Lost money how? From all the subs cancelled? Oh wait, those aren’t a thing. From… no, there’s no way for them to specifically show a loss of revenue associated with this day, even if that were actually happening, which it’s not.

When cash shoppers don’t log in they don’t spend money which is where the real profits are made in gw2….

And then Anet will release the Balthazar outfit on the gemstore. Good luck saying ‘no’ to buying that.

If I buy that, I will do it with some of the gold I have saved since the traits patch last April. I have not had to outfit alts.

It gave me meaningful enhancements between level 30-80. Before the trait system, I simply power leveled because leveling was boring.

Be honest Blade. Leveling is still boring once you get your first 80.

Look at my signature. Count how many characters I have.

Most of them are created after the new trait system has been implemented.

And you did not find the repetition tedious?

Taco Bell has these amazing things called Club Chalupas. They’re chicken chalupas with a special club sauce and bacon bits. They’re delicious; my favorite thing Taco Bell has ever done. Unfortunately, they’re not a permanent menu item. They come back once in a while, for a limited time only, then they’re gone. I never know when they’re going to start selling them again (if I did, I’d be planning ahead to ensure I had enough money to buy at least one every day, they’re that good.) The last time they had them, it was during a period of time where I hadn’t gone to Taco Bell for a while due to a number of different circumstances. I had no idea they were selling Club Chalupas again until my friend called me and told me he’d gotten one the day before.

Of course, I immediately rushed to my local T-Bell and ordered half a dozen Club Chalupas, only to be told that they were a limited time item and they were no longer available.

Taco Bell completely screwed me over with their limited-time-only item. I’m sorry I can’t swing by my local Taco Bell every day to check and see if they happen to have the Club Chalupas for sale. Sometimes, my wife wants Burger King; sometimes my kids want me to actually cook dinner at home.

Seriously, it makes me want to quit eating Taco Bell forever.

That would be a good move health wise.

Just my experience, but most new players I’ve played with don’t even know what traits are by the time the hit 80, an most haven’t unlocked more than 1 or 2. From my point of view it seems like you’re just delaying all the things that they need to know about character builds until 80, making the whole process a long drawn out tutorial without a skip button (they can’t afford traits).

But I do like the idea, its just so poorly implemented. Full map completions for low tier traits is ridiculous for example. It should build up instead of being so random imo

Trait unlock is not random – this is big quest http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Trait_guide

A big tedious quest after you have done it once.

And for those who think traits don’t matter, just refund them all, then go out and see how well you do.

The ability to train Masteries is unlocked at level 80 for all players that own Heart of Thorns.

And just how will traits and skill points work for those that do not own Heart of Thorns?

No where was it said that the new trait system is tied into the mastery system. Colin mentioned that with the introduction of masteries, they are also re-evaluating other systems, like traits.

I’ve seen this misunderstood in several places. By mentioning them in the same post, and then not giving further clarification, these two get tied together in people’s minds and causes confusion and fear. This is one reason we need further information sooner rather than later.

Hell, maybe I’m the one misinterpreting the statement.

This is unclear?

Colin recently shared some information related to the Traits system. In addition our article on Masteries provided other early info that could be part of any conversation about traits or character progression. (Edit: I don’t mean to suggest that the two topics are intertwined, only to point you to two discussion about character progression that have been released in recent days.)

Yes, it is unclear to me how traits and skill points will function for those that do not own Heart Of Thorns. Or for those that do for that matter.

Skill points and Masteries are linked in the article regarding the changes.

Seriously, it looks to me like I should just wait until the thing rolls out before I waste time, money and progression that may be obsolete in the blink of an eye.

I really wish there was some way to let me be treated as an experienced player though the account itself is new.

THIS is the point. Teaching new players is always good and a needed thing, but with NPE all players are treated equal, not taking in account how smart and/or experienced the players can be.

Some of the NPE does disappear on the second character you level. And leveling through levels 1-15 is much faster than it used to be.

Yes but, from viewpoint of a really new but experienced player… if someone already feel frustrated due being treated like a child just at the first character, do you think they would be patient and persistent at the point of creating a second one just to see if things would change, or would they give it up before that? I believe the last…

Another thing… what’s the point of it being faster? Leveling wasn’t supposed to be an enjoyable experience instead a boring tutorial that you feel wanting to rush in order to finish it asap? Again, that’s it, leveling has became more like a boring chore than a enjoyable playtime.. I never bothered about hitting lvl 30 in the fastest time possible, I liked exploring things and mechanics at my own pace.

However, a thing I tend to agree with…

Calling for people to be fired when you don’t know anything about the internal workings of a company isn’t just irresponsible. It’s unwise.

Mistakes happens at times and firing may not the best solution yes. Sometimes replacing the one or those who did the mistake can cost more than the damage caused by the mistake.

See I just don’t get this comment. I’ve played lots of other MMOs, most recently FFXIV. I’m an experienced player. FFXIV was much much slower in getting abilities than Guild Wars 2 is. An experienced player will fly through the first 15 levels, which are introductory anyway, and have most of the important stuff unlocked.

I’m not even sure why this is a discussion.

Absolutely. I am getting ready to tackle SB for the first time on my $10 account. My only nit to pick so far is that it’s kind of silly to pass a commune with this place for a skill point, and being told I’m not experienced enough to commune lol.

“Ruinous pile” is the best phrase I’ve seen on this forum to describe NPE.

Frankly if I were the CEO at NCsoft I’d be getting on the phone to find the person responsible, and canning the person who pulled this stunt

It reduced an elegant game to a genre dime-a-dozen FTP with childish “reward” window that looks cheap. Instead of coming into a game world of faraway fantasy, I’m bombarded with this psudo reward, feeling it’s like a “candy” treat to get me to even respond. Mmm, my goal in an RPG is to learn, to feel I’m challenged, to step into a world of wander. Not to be handed “candies”. In the starting days of GW2, under ANet’s vision, what I saw was a world of beauty and wonder. Now I feel I’m reading a cheap romance, starting on page one with some “enticement”. If I want dime store stuff, I’ll go to 100 other FTP games online.

On top of it, the rewards are full of items that are not salvageable, so players need to drag to destroy. So you give candy to players, then expect them to labor to get rid of it.

Ok… I’d be calling the QA dept. Shouldn’t the disposal of these items be a bit more interesting than that? Make the game a world people can sink into, not one of pop-ups?

Like, players may get a quest to turn in the reward to an army officer at his racial city and learn more about how his turning in his old sword can help younger recruits.

It was ANet’s goal to make this a world of living, breathing fantasy where people will always feel they are in-character. I see this NPE is full of “let’s get the player excited about pop up reward”, “let’s have them drag it to destroy it for our in-game economy.”

Meanwhile, ANet’s vision is utterly being torn apart.

Sigh. If you hope GW2 will become a unforgetable chapter in MMORPG history, as I felt it could be, then don’t do things like this to tear it down, to bring it down to the level of all the cheap FTP games out there.

I’m pretty furious right now. Yes, if I were the CEO I’d be canning people atm.

Whoever was in charge should’ve been told to go right back to the drawing board or just get fired for sheer stupidity. But of course, someone’s going to whine at me for that sentiment. Anyways, +50 for your post….if I could do that.

Because that wouldn’t cause your gaming company to go out of business. Some people have not a clue how businesses work. Not a clue.

Once, when I was running a fairly large store as part of a chain, a guy made a mistake that cost the company a couple of thousand dollars. It was an honest mistake, but yeah, it cost us. The district manager told me to fire him. A couple of weeks later, the DM sees him working and says to me, I told you to fire that guy. I told him, fire him? I just spent $2000 TRAINING him.

It’s not like he was ever going to make the same mistake again, so firing him would have been counter productive. By keeping the guy, he became not only a loyal employee but one of my key salespeople. That guy ended up being very loyal, because he knew I didn’t fire him when I could have.

Firing people who do something that doesn’t work out, particularly something like this which was undoubtedly the work and decision of more than one person, most of these things are doing collaboratively, means firing more than one person. Who replaces those people? Who trains the people that replaces them? What makes you think the next people can do better? Do you know how long this would set back development?

Calling for people to be fired when you don’t know anything about the internal workings of a company isn’t just irresponsible. It’s unwise.

You must have had a very forgiving DM. Most likely mine would have fired both of you.

You don’t fire your #1 earner, I don’t care how annoyed you are. I made more money for that company than any other manager in the district.

He did try to fire me once. Man, he got in trouble with the office.

What can I say? I’ve been employed by some very vain bosses. One time I was actually fired, and they ended up rehiring me with a raise and promotion.

I ran a ranger up to around lvl 15, and have banked around 6 gold so far, and a few goodies from 2 BL chests {had a key drop, and the PS key}.

I have not used my chest yet, as I am undecided between the heavy and medium armor set. I’m going to delete the ranger at around lvl 20, and start the main.

I bought a new account over the weekend. The silliest NPE for me was having to go back to pick up the skill points. Maybe they should move those to a more logical location.

Why can't new players do the dailys?

No, you do not need to be level 18.
You can enter it at level 2.

You can actually enter PvP and WvW from level 2. You’re just not told about them until later on.

You can not enter WvW until level 18 and PvP until level 22. I visually verified this after this post. When you try to access them a mouseover tooltip pops up stating these levels are required. I’m assuming this applies to new accounts only and is not applicable if you have a higher level toon on your account.

My point is that the new players are encouraged to participate in these events by a daily quest pop up. Regardless of how many other players think a new player should and shouldn’t enjoy their game experience the fact remains that a new player is given a task they can not complete.

I would prefer the new players be given encouragement to play in areas that they actually can complete.

False, mostly. You have to go to Lion’s Arch. Once you go click on a portal for WvW, the icon at the top unlocks including the keyboard shortcut. Once you go through the portal for Hearts of the Mist, and complete the tutorial, the icon at the top, including whatever shortcut you assign to it will unlock.

Will this unlock account wide?

looks like it.. a friend of mine just bought a new account, made his character to lvl 19 and then he decided to switch server, so he deleted his characters and made a new one, and at lvl 3 he was able to access WvW simply by pressing B, no need to go via LA portal.

Thx. I am playing my new account as well, and that will be helpful indeed.

I never understood the QQ about this, they went from a system where you buy your traits….to a system where you can buy OR unlock your traits and people are complaining? I don’t understand….just unlock them with ingame gold if you don’t like PvE. JUST as it was before.

Maybe because buying them under the present system costs a heck of a lot more than it was JUST before.

My new account level 5 just had the dailies come up. There are 3. One from each basket.

My level 2, new account ranger, only had one daily from each of the baskets.

The mystic coins will be nice starting $ once I get enough to pay the AH listing fee.

Game Updates: Traits

Hey folks,

Now that the HOT is out of the bag, we’re able to update this thread with more details. With the introduction of the new account based mastery system for end-game progression and growth in PvE, we’ll also be re-evaluating our other systems of character progression to ensure they match our over-all pillars and goals for Gw2.

In doing so: we’re going to be removing the current trait unlocking system currently on live and replacing it with a more simplified system that supports where skills-traits-specializations are going in the future. We’ll go into more details between now and the release of HOT on how skills, traits, and specializations will work in the new Gw2 world.

Thank you for all your passionate feedback on this topic – it not only helped our dev team lead to this decision, but has played a large role in helping us define how to build our exciting new account based mastery system for end-game progression in PvE as well.

It remains to be seen, what the current system will be replaced with. I am not celebrating yet.

The current system was hailed as being this new, awesome, and improved thing. I feel quite the opposite, personally. So, I have become a skeptic and reserve judgment . We have been told the current system will be removed but what will we end up with?

Very welcome news that the current system is going away but as I do not know what this truly means I am still not excited. It would be very easy to get excited about this, but I have disliked everything that has been done since the trait change except the free and immediate respec. Experience has made me quite wary.

Indeed. It could end up being far worse than what we have at the moment.

Without diving into the mire of some of this commentary, I think a lot of this could be fixed with simply more choices. I don’t mind the new system, though I don’t find the rewards as stellar as they were sold to be. I’m sort of like, ‘meh’ when I get them. If we got things like Black Lion keys or makeover kits, you’d suddenly have people a lot more interested in the rewards, I feel.

So far the Chest of BL goods has turned out (for me) to be BL salvage kits. One in each chest.
