Thanks to everyone who posted! I feel like I have a much better understanding of some of the problems with the current PvP system. There are some great observations and suggestions that have been posted.

I especially like the suggestion of alternate game modes. It seems Anet did attempt to add some variation via a few of the different map traits. For example, Spirit Watch has the orb, and Legacy of the Foefire has “bases” that can be conquered. However, due to the low number of points many of these features award, it’s typically more efficient to simply capture and hold points as usual. It’s almost more common for players to ignore unique map features than make use of them (except for Skyhammer, but Skyhammer tends to annoy everyone).

I think Temple of the Silent Storm is my favorite map because it does have unique features that are worth utilizing. Any of the team buffs can easily tip the balance, which makes fights to control them important.

I would love to see some suggestions about possible effective ways to implement different game modes and match categories, if anyone has any ideas!

Also, for those who believe there are balancing issues that should be fixed: what exactly do you find unbalanced, and what would you propose as a solution for the issue?

Awesome discussion all, let’s keep it going!

Outfits and the future of Armor.

Let us toggle the shoulders and gauntlet visibility on outfits like we can with armor. The outfits already let us hide headgear if we so desire. I love the witch’s outfit, but the shoulders are dumb (imo) and have to go. If I could toggle shoulders off, I’d have my main in that outfit all the time.

I did something similar (with the Piquant plant food recipe) because I foolishly assumed it would be an account-wide unlock. I have all my crafting disciplines on one character except cooking, so transferring the recipe over slipped my mind.

Cost me about 50 geodes, but now I know.

Berserker gear and builds are not required. They are simply what allows for the fastest clearing of most PvE content.

If you line up a bunch of different builds that excel at different things, then there is no “this is the BEST build.” There are builds that are better for different things.

In dungeons where a fairly one-dimensional AI is behind every enemy we face, certain builds become more useful, more optimal. Bosses often telegraph their hardest-hitting attacks. Now, for these fights you have two main options. You can trait and gear in vitality and toughness and take the hit. Or alternatively, you can wait until the telegraphed move starts and then hit the aegis key, or the dodge key. Since the second option has found a way to avoid the largest hits without treating or gearing for it, they are free to use builds to maximise damage instead.

This is not necessarily true in other game modes, such as PvP. In PvP there is no one-dimensional AI, but rather a team of very active players trying their best to down you as fast as possible. Here once again DPS builds are viable, but not necessarily always optimal. Many good PvP teams will include a bunker, or a decapper, or a control specialist. And every avid PvP player knows how powerful condition builds have become recently.

Here’s an example that’s not Guild Wars. Ever played the Pokemon games for the GBA or NDS? One very strong “build” for a party member is a so-called “toxic staller,” which essentially does damage over time while keeping up constant blocks and heals. It’s typically very powerful. It’s also a massive pain to play with outside of PvP. Why? Because it’s slow, and because such a defensive control build is not necessary for the PvE gameplay. In the open world and in boss fights, more damage is the way to go.

The common complaint here is that not all builds have the same usefulness in all areas of the game. Tanks, healers and damage over time builds are all viable in dungeons. Some people play them for fun, some people use them to compensate for a lack of skill or a lack of interest in active defensive gameplay. But taking into consideration all of the factors that make dungeons what they are, a straight DPS build is most certainly the best in dungeons.

This has been said, but I’ll repeat it anyway. If Anet implemented some massive changes to the game such as boosting enemy armour, giving them unblockable melee attacks, and improving AI, then perhaps straight DPS would no longer be optimal. Perhaps the number of “avoids” each player gets through dodges, blocks and blinds would no longer be enough to keep them alive. In this case, the meta might shift to ranged condition builds, the exact opposite of what it is now.

In that case, the only difference would be that ranged condition builds would have become the most efficient way to clear dungeons. Simply take all the current content that advocates “zerker” and replace it with “condi” instead. LFG speed run groups would become “80s condi 5k ap ping gear” and straight DPS builds would be kicked.

You can change the meta. But there will always be a meta because there will always be a most efficient way to clear dungeons.

Hit, dodge, repeat. If you take a big attack, heal. Timely use of blinds and aegis.

It’s not a simple fight, but it’s definitely doable.

For those that can’t or don’t want to fight it normally, just send Scruffy to fight it, camp on the crates and range it. You might take a tiny hit occasionally, which then you can heal.

Spirit Watch tactics

in PvP

Posted by: Blair.3796

Blair.3796

Because since the orb gives a decent number of points all at one time, it entices people to want it. Instant gratification. Plus since it’s the unique mechanic for the map, people feel somewhat obligated to make use of it.

You’re right, holding two points will grant far more points in the long run than running the orb will. I like to suggest such a tactic to my team whenever I get Spirit Watch. However, the orb can help as well. If your team is successfully holding two points, then you might as well have the rest of your players go for the orb. Maybe send someone to decap their home.

So, that’s what I like to do. Bunk mid, bunk home (depending on the game), decap enemy home whenever it’s easy, then have the rest run the orb. For bonus fun, try to run the orb to their home just to keep as many of their players away from your two points as possible.

Might not be the best tactic, but it seems pretty reliable and when I get a team that follows along things usually go fairly well.

How Do YOU Eval Your Performance?

Blair.3796

I main a boon/support guard bunker in SoloQ. So, I typically critique myself on the following:

  • Did I win my 1v1s (especially against glass cannon builds)?
  • Did I successfully defend any points I was tasked to defend by my team?
  • When in 1v2+ situations, did I last long enough for my teammates to arrive and tip the balance?
  • Did my arrival to ongoing combats tip the balance in my team’s favour?

I think those are the core elements of this build. As others stated above me, things like being aware of the general map situation, paying attention to chat, keeping tabs on decayers, etc. are all important, but because those factors hold true for every player regardless of class or build they’re going to be constant.

Of course, one very important thing to note is that you (or I) won’t win every fight every time. Sometimes, we can do everything right and still lose because the opponent was simply better or luckier. So if for example I lose in a 1v1 against a glass cannon warrior, rather than beat myself up about it I simply consider what happened and attempt to modify my play style accordingly to prevent such an occurrence from happening again.

To answer your second question, if two of your players are AFK at base, then you shouldn’t expect to win. However, I believe you should always try regardless. Go for decals, try to avoid zergs and hope the AFK players come back. Occasionally they’re AFK for a legitimate reason (baby crying, important phone call, etc.) and are not purposely taking advantage of their team; such players tend to hurry back as soon as possible and then apologise for their absence. Real life gets in the way occasionally.

Have fun and keep playing!

Why is PvP supposedly "poorly designed?"

Hello! Just stopping by to make a quick inquiry.

Recently I’ve read a lot of posts, both in the PvP forums and in other topics (endgame content, etc.) in which various players have noted that to them, the PvP in this game is “poorly designed.” Not having played many other MMORPG games prior to this one, I was curious as to the reasoning behind these claims.

I am a casual PvPer. I had never tried PvP prior to the April feature pack, but once I heard about the changes I decided to give it a shot. And now I love it, it’s one of my favourite parts of the game. Just last month I earned Champion Paragon with my support/boon guardian (not particularly impressive, but a personal goal nonetheless) ankitten ow experimenting with Elementalist and Mesmer builds.

In the time I’ve played, I’ve witnessed several of the things people complain about on the forums, such as:

*AFK players resulting in 4v5 or worse
*disparaging comments among teammates
*insults and arguments between opposing team players
*players who give up and stop playing as soon as they’re losing by a decent amount, 50-100 points
*a loss is always everyone else’s fault

Sure, some of these aspects can be annoying, and when multiple games in succession contain these elements then it can certainly hurt the experience. But these seem to me to be minor flaws that will be inherent in the system no matter how PvP is actually structured.

So, aside from the possibly inherent toxic elements and bad eggs of the PvP community as a whole, why do some people think the actual system is “poorly designed?”

Thanks in advance for any input!

Looking for a class best suited for me.

Sounds like you’re pretty set on a necro. In that case, I’d recommend a necro.

My other recommendation would be guardian. Lots of different styles of play, especially in PvP, but primarily a melee bruiser that supports with lots of blocks.

Though, that’s my preferred play style. We don’t know your preferred play style. All we know is that you apparently really want to play a necro. Well, why not play a necro?

Would buy. End of story. Make it 1600 gems and I would still buy.

Because it would mean a return of casual clothes. The town clothes, hoodies, etc are now tonics that can’t be customized. The only outfits we’ve seen are cook, executioner, wintersday and now mad king. Where are the normal clothes? The real clothes?

IMO if someone doesn’t like the school uniform, then don’t buy it. But don’t walk your norn thief in stripper armor up to my human engi in a school uniform and start talking about how creepy MY sense of style is.

We got the Balthazar back. Admittedly that’s only one skin that can only be obtained through PvP, but at least that shows that Anet is implementing some sort of PvP exclusive rewards content.

I too would like some cool unique armor skins as PvP rewards, either from rank up chests or track progression.

I couldn’t agree more. This is exactly why Cobalt is my favorite GS. I pulled a second one pre-patch and was keeping it in my bank for precisely this reason. Though I suppose with the wardrobe system it doesn’t matter anymore.

The only exception is my Asura. I purposely chose the smallest Asura frame for my warrior, and for ridiculous contrast I like using the largest GS I can find.

Fantastic suggestion. I too am tired of a blasted and destroyed LA. Especially since I was busy with real-world events for a couple of months, so I didn’t even see it get destroyed.

I expect LA to be reconstructed in the near future, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Anet simply said, “here you go!” and it was fixed. I really like the idea of the players “contributing” to the reconstruction, however artificially.

I want those PvP masquerade armor skins for PvE too, but unfortunately for me, I HATE sPvP, so I guess I will never be able to get them.

The ironic thing is, I have over 15k badges of honor, and despite all my WvW’ing, those skins aren’t obtainable with Badges of Honor. The rewards for sPvP gear should be obtainable through other currencies like WvW badges, Karma, Dungeon Tokens etc. etc. but it isn’t :-(

So much for ‘playing the way you want’ as described upon GW2’s release.

You can play exactly as you want. What you cannot do is pick your single favorite way to play, play only that way, and still expect to have access to all the game’s loot through only that progression.

Though that’s an aside. I completely agree that all the PvP armor should be available. At the very least make it obtainable as sPvP rewards.

Why do you dislike sPvP? I’m truly curious, speaking as someone who only attempted PvP twice before the update. Now it’s my favorite part of the game.

It seems the problem is because Anet is updating a new certificate again as stated in below link, they also told the BLTC on Mac Beta Client will be impacted again. Guess we just need to wait until its done.

I am pretty sure PvP players can get the Daily strictly in PvP, as some of the PvE activities now count in PvP. I could be mistaken, as I don’t really PvP much.

Nope. This is not possible. Even if you play sPVP and WvW you will still only get 4/5.

Whenever I go to Queensdale, the Champ Train is still running full bore. I’m not sure where it has been ‘dismantled’.

You’re right, my wording was a bit strong. They’ve simply been nerfed. A lot. (Edited my original post to reword it).

Yeh I’d hardly call a one off payment of 5g for a trait a gold sink either…

It is if you have seven level 80 alts.

I’ve gotten my daily with nothing but PvP several times since the update. Some of the categories can take a little longer than in PvE (salvage kit uses, kills) but they’re still doable.

I don’t know, there’s something immensely entertaining about ~20 players defending a vigil engineer during a toxic offshoot by forming a line in from of him and only using bows to take out the charging enemies. It’s the kind of thing I “dream” of when I envision cooperative MMO play. That never happened pre-megaserver.

I’ve seen nothing wrong in the slightest with the megaserver system. There are more people on maps, more guild invites and more idle chatter. Some of these may not be to any one person’s personal liking, but there’s nothing fundamentally wrong with them.

As far as I’m aware (and I may very well be mistaken), Ferguson’s Crossing has yet to beat Tequatl. Maybe now the megaserver implementation will give us the needed edge to do just that.

People don’t realize that megaserver had improve the game. I think most of the whiners had mistakenly thought that Gw2 is a single player game.

Exactly. I have a guild mate, of all people (who’s one of my best friends IRL) who gets legitimately frustrated whenever he runs into more than one or two people on a map. Just two days ago I asked him something along the lines of, “You’re playing an MMO, a massive multiplayer game, so aren’t you supposed to at least run into other people, if not play with them?” He said, quote: “No.”

Really. This isn’t Skyrim. And I for one am sick and tired of a chat channel filled with nothing but repetitive NPC chatter.

I wonder how many times GW2 have been killed now.

Hating MegaServer is the “cool thing” right now. Just wait a few weeks and most people will have calmed down and will keep playing as usual, until the next thing to hate comes along (probably the lack of new LS or something like that).

People will only hate the lack of a LS until there actually is a new LS. Then people will switch to hating the new LS.

Hate threads and pity parties are all just popular fads. It’s like you said, eventually hating the megaservers won’t be “cool” anymore.

I can think of a few ways in which megaservers could potentially help the game. I can’t think of any ways in which they actively hurt it.

As an aside, why do people think that megaservers are killing the “communities?” We’ve all got guilds and friend lists, so I at least have yet to run into problems communicating with old acquaintances. And post-update I’ve met a ton of new people thanks to maps actually having a significant player population.

Now, if you ever went to the bug section, or ever read a single suggestion on these forums you would come to the conclusion that they (Anet) do not care.

Because they don’t usually respond, or because many of the bugs still aren’t fixed? Because fixing bugs takes time, and it’s often an infuriating process. Debugging was always my least favorite part about my programming courses.

Unfortunately, many of the bugged issues simply aren’t that big a deal, comparatively. When players say “we want <x>, <y> and <z>,” and <z> happens to be an old minor bug, the developer teams are more likely to focus on <x> and <y>.

Is it the player job to fix the game? The answer is no.

All the power we have is to point out things that do not work, or things that could added etc.

There’s a level of moderation for everything. Something like “the trading post hasn’t worked for five days, please fix” is a legitimate issue that warrants immediate attention. And making suggestions such as, “why not add new maps so that veteran players will have some fresh permanent content” is a helpful way to contribute to improving the game. But comments such as, “I don’t like <x>, <x> sucks, why did you implement <x>, I told you not to do <x>” are quite the uninspiring read; if there’s a problem that isn’t a bug or a tech issue, then propose a solution.

Maybe my way of saying things is not the way you think is right. But deal with it.

Now if you have something constructive regarding things that the game lack of, feel free to list them. Otherwise, feel free to go on another topic and try your best to beat it to death.

I love you too <3

Hold up, you guys don’t want to do dungeons, WvW, or PvP? Why are you even playing this game then?

I’m just trying to put it in perspective. Of course I do all of the above. I don’t spam any of the game content, but each day I try to do a little of everything: a dungeon run or two, a couple PvP matches, ~30 minutes in WvW, complete a map, maybe even a fractal if I have time. In my opinion it helps keep content from getting stale. I’ve had days in the past where I’ve put four or five strait hours into PvP and, despite a 70% win ratio, by the end I was a seething ball of rage anyway (mesmers on Skyhammer…)

PvP players on the other hand have to do PvE in some way in order to get their dailies now.If anyone should be complaining its them.

The cool thing is that most of the time at least a few of the PvE daily achievements will overlap with PvP. Today I got daily with the two PvP achievements, Reviver, Salvager and Kills. Eventually I switched to a new alt and got the other two PvE achievements with that character.

I think the permanent balance for daily is going to be, out of a total of 10 daily options:

5 PvE
1 Dungeon / Fractal
2 PvP
2 WvW

This is the pattern I’ve seen each day since the patch came out. Without even focusing on getting the PvE dailies I end up with most of them in about an hour or so anyway. This system is nice, especially for new players, because it will always offer five very simple and straightforward achievements that players can accomplish for the daily rewards chest (and, more importantly, the laurel).

So, putting all the other post-update changes aside, I am very fond of this one. Simplified the process, made it more accessible to new players, and still left a solid half of the achievements as little bonuses for those players who enjoy PvP and WvW.

Like I said, constructive criticism is good. If you find flaws, make note of them, but please post at least a loosely-formed suggestion for fixing it. People say they don’t like something, Anet changes it, and then people complain even more. Maybe it would help if people made suggestions such as, “I’m not fond of feature <w> because of <x> and <y>, so what if you implemented <z> instead?” instead of, “I’m not fond of <x>. But I hate the new <y> more. And please God don’t do <z>.”

It works for named weapons as well. I use Cobalt on my guardian because I like the effect. I recently pulled a second Cobalt from a chest in AC. I’m saving the second in my bank for when I get another character who uses a greatsword. I could simply apply the Cobalt effect, but it wouldn’t be Cobalt. It’d be, say, a bland level 80 greatsword (pearl) with the Cobalt skin.

It’s also not a Pearl GS anymore, which makes the name incorrect.

It’s still an issue of pride. I legitimately pulled two Cobalt greatswords. So now when I ping my gear, people see “Cobalt,” not “Pear Greatsword of <x>.” Makes me feel happier to have pulled a named exotic.

Constructive criticism is good. “The game has nothing” isn’t very helpful. And “the game needs something” is just a string of empty words.

I think it’s a matter of pride. Getting unique weapons is certainly an accomplishment, but the wardrobe system had the potential to allow for simple clones. Now if you pull a named exotic, you can equip it, and if someone asks you to ping your gear then they’ll all see that you have a legitimate named weapon. So now when I see someone with “Twilight” but it reads “Pearl Greatsword of <x>” I snicker a little.

It’s a little bizarre, yes, but I don’t know why it should matter. The item description gives both the original item name and the applied skin name, so now we know exactly what it is.

The problems people have seem to come from the name of the item itself, but why exactly is that a problem? Does anyone open their hero panel and gaze lovingly at, of all things, the names of their items? I don’t. I spend plenty of time on armor skin combinations and dye schemes, not on what my items happen to be called.

The whole idea of “fake” equipment now sort of makes sense as well. If someone goes through all the trouble to forge Twilight, then he will have one greatsword called “Twilight.” If he applies the Twilight skin to a different greatsword, he doesn’t have two Twilights. He has one Twilight and an imitation.

It works for named weapons as well. I use Cobalt on my guardian because I like the effect. I recently pulled a second Cobalt from a chest in AC. I was in Queensdale leveling a new alt yesterday and there were a group of “experienced” players berating and bullying a first-time user for fighting a champ out of the order of their precious train. They went so far as to tell him that he wasn’t allowed to do champ events out of order and told him to either fall in line or stop playing.

I literally LOL’d

I hate bullying, but honestly a new player can’t kill a champ alone, he’d be lucky to stay alive long enough.
So often times thats just a seasoned player or two doing it on propose with the clear intention to upset a group of people they know it’s out there.

Sorry for the lack of clarity. I believe he killed it with other random players who happened to be around at the time. He didn’t solo it. He also clearly said he was new. I suppose he could have been lying, but I like to think he wasn’t.

The only solution I would have is for the developers to actually listen to their CLIENTS(you know the ones who pay their salaries), the way I see them doing business is for them to say “yeah we hear you, but, we know better so we are going to do it our way end of story”.

The changes in the latest patch are all in response to things players have wanted.

Or are you referring to the customers who bought the game 18 months ago and haven’t paid a penny to play it since? Or the ones who announce they’re quitting?

The devs collect a lot of data that doesn’t involve outshouting other people on the forums.

If this update is what players wanted why are there more negative responses than there is positive? Could it be because it was put together the way that they wanted it and not the way it was envisioned by the community?

A day after playing with the patch, I popped onto the forums to thank the developers for doing an overall fantastic job with the updates. It’s not difficult to give praise where praise is due. However, as has been stated in the past, most players who are happy with the new content are busy playing the game rather than posting on the forums.

Therefore, the ratio of positive to negative responses will always be weighted to the negative side because the less-contented people are complaining rather than playing, while for the happy players it’s the opposite.

I ran a dungeon with a very nice group of people with Chinese user tags and character names and who all spoke to one another in Chinese throughout the entire run the other day. I thought the cultural mix was kind of fun. I chatted “xiexie” to them at the end, which I know isn’t technically correct but unfortunately us English users are for some reason prevented from typing in Asian languages on our computers, so I tried to work with what I’ve got.

I’ve also run into people speaking Malay in some maps, Fields of Ruin in particular. And then there’s Spanish users, but that’s not really new.

I think it’s kind of fun, personally.

But the abusive users are more than a little obnoxious.

I reported them for harassment, obviously, and whispered the new player telling him to ignore them and play exactly the way he/she wanted to.

(As a note, I understand that for fluidity purposes it’s typically best to follow the “correct” order with the champ train, but even so that shouldn’t stop players, especially new players, from doing what events they want whenever they want to do them).

Pretty soon the only ones that will be left playing this game are people like me with nothing better to do and can’t afford a subbed game, pure casuals and the fanbois.

Only people who enjoy playing the game will be playing it? That’s awful!

Sorry, but, I don’t enjoy the game in the sense you may mean, I play it just to have something to do other than play Solitair/Mahjongg and the ONLY things I do are my dailies/crafting and world bosses to sell the rares for the coinage, then it’s back to Solitair and Mahjongg.

I’m having trouble discerning your priorities. If this game is so boring to you and such an apocalyptic waste of your time (and from the sound of it has been for quote a while), then why exactly are you still here?

I mean, I occasionally do enjoy me a good game of solitaire, but normally I log onto Guild Wars because, well, I want to play Guild Wars. Maybe I’m alone, but…

So please, tell me. Humor me. Yes, we all know what the perceived problems are, but what are the solutions? If the game is so stale and repetitive with “nothing to do” (Anet tried Living World, but then people complained that new content was too frequent), then what exactly should they implement?

Someone tell me. Anyone at all.

What about “it gives me something to do other than just playing Solitair and Mahjongg” did you not understand, plus I can’t afford to play a good subbed game and I need to add that I also still play GW1 going on 8 years now. To make it easier to understand I am retired/dissabled and limited in my mobility.

Might I recommend a good book series? The collections of Sherlock Holmes short stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle are a personal favorite.

I guess the part I didn’t understand was the part where this was literally the only thing potentially worth doing more than playing solitaire.

Me personally, I use GW2 as a moderately social time filler. After uni courses, after homework and studying, after hanging out with friends and occasionally going to bars and such, I like to come home, enjoy a nice dinner with my family, and then take some casual down time before bed. My current activity of choice is GW2. Sometimes it’s TV. Sometimes it’s a good book.

I used to play console games quite often, but then I decided GW2 was more fun. Eventually I’ll probably move on to something else, but for now I’m enjoying myself immensely, so here I am.

Also you never proposed an actual solution to your plight.

Mistforged Hero Weapon Skins

So we earn these weapons through WvW achievements, correct? Can the skins then be applied to PvE gear with the wardrobe system? Because although I like the looks of the weapons, I’m not a huge WvW fan, so I don’t want to put a bunch of time into something I don’t really care about to get gear I won’t use normally.

Warrior 25 point heal skill. You literally would never take damage.

Leveling is the worst it's been

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I don’t get it. I really don’t. I don’t see any problem with the update, especially concerning leveling.

The week before the update, I decided to start an ele and get it to 80 in a week. I pulled it off with a day to spare, and even so it was the most “difficult” leveling I’ve done. To put it simply, leveling was almost too easy.

I specifically waited until post-update to try a new character. Started a new little Asura two days ago. I’m level 24, and I have never had an easier time with skill challenges and hearts.

I have a good friend who bought the game two days ago. He’s never played an MMO before. He has yet to run into trouble.

Now, maybe I’m old-fashioned, but I level by mapping and personal story. Even with the update I’m doing level 28 story missions with a level 20 character. Once again, don’t see the problem. I don’t grind because, as you said, grinding is boring. I dislike the Queensdale train for the same reason – boring. Only thing more boring than the train, in my opinion, is grenade engi (stand far away and button mash 1, HURRR).

Now I will agree with the transmutes. I had over 100 crystals in my bank, and I had fun using them as I leveled. Not like we could ever run out. But post update I’m sitting on ~30 charges, which prevents me from transmuting each new set of armor. Which is too bad, but whatever, I’ll manage.

Getting traits looks to be a bit of a pain, but whatever. Maybe the game will start getting somewhat challenging now.

New Daily system is less friendly

As I understand it, there are now 10 daily options. Six are PvE, two are PvP, and two are WvW. The only way this is a “nerf” would be if someone had been relying entirely on PvP for daily. I’m a super casual PvPer and I still managers get eight of the dailies each day with no problem.

As for DPS, well, Anet predicted a 10% drop in DPS for complete zerk builds. That’s, like, the difference between a sigil of night and not. I can’t say any of my builds have suffered in the slightest from this update.

Now the TP, sell and currency exchange all work, but the gem store is down again.

Also, it seems to be user-specific to some degree. Last night, I had full access to everything, but my friend couldn’t access anything but the TP.

Reward tracks, not enough

in PvP

Posted by: Blair.3796

Blair.3796

Noting that the first reward track open is Arah (?!) and it only seems to take 40 wins to obtain a full set of Arah dungeon gear, I have to wonder, is there any attempt at equalizing the amount of time spent in Dungeons to equal the amount of time it now takes in PvP to earn a full dungeon set? 40 wins in PvP does not take nearly as much time as the 30+ Arah runs it takes to earn the same rewards. Handing out the armor that dungeon runners have spent months organizing and running for in just a fraction of the time to a section of the game that was never meant to have cross-over is insulting.

So at what point will the dungeons be updated to where I can earn PvP rewards for a fraction of the time investment that it would actually take in PvP? I’d like to wear that fancy new Balthazaar skin and have the Dragon finisher, and don’t care to actually put forth any time or effort into the game mode it was intended to be earned in. Since they’re handing out the most prestigious PvE skins to PvP players, what is the PvE side getting out of it other than having to spend more time doing vastly more time-consuming game modes for the same rewards?

So sorry about your obby shards not being ‘enough’. You’re currently enjoying the fastest track to some of the most difficult to obtain dungeon skins in the game, while the dungeon runners are getting kitten in return for it. We’ve spent months earning the same gear you can earn in… oh how long did that track take you… 13 hours? Cool story.

It’s not a full set of Arah gear, despite what the track says. I just finished the reward track last night and all the box contained was a single piece. After spending several minutes feeling somewhat cheated, I settled on the heavy helmet :/

Game Updates: Traits

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Blair.3796

Blair.3796

I vehemently disagree with the opposition to the new trait system.

Allow me to wax philosophical for a moment. We’re all here because we want to play the game. Guild Wars is fun. We all bought it, tried it, liked it, and now keep coming back for more. If I were to examine each of the enjoyable experiences I had playing this game and ranked them, I’d say my favorite was getting my first level 80 character. It felt like a huge accomplishment, and it opened up a ton of fun stuff in the game that I hadn’t been able to do until then.

But over time, the leveling got boring. I’m now sitting on several level 80s, and I have to admit that after the first, getting each one to max was a pain. Just recently it took me a little over six days to start a new elementalist and propel myself to 80. It felt like there was “no point” to playing without a level 80.

I don’t think that’s the way the game is supposed to be played. I think it’s supposed to be an experience. We’re supposed to invest a lot of time and effort into our characters, and truly come to care about them. Although I am not usually a roleplayer, I think that community has the right idea; by taking an active interest in your character as an individual with a story rather than just a tool to power through fractals and dungeons for better loot, the process becomes fun.

It’s a bit of a cheesy old adage, but the enjoyment should be focused on the process rather than the destination. And I think this was Anet’s idea when designing the new system.

Taking all that into consideration and moving on to the actual gameplay mechanics…

I love the new trait system. In fact, my biggest problem with it is that we are able to purchase the traits at all. I think questing for traits is fantastic. It forces us to put effort into making our characters be who we want them to be.

Yes, the system can be more punishing for lower level characters. But I think that’s okay. The zerk lovers community here has a habit of telling players who don’t run zerk because they’re more fragile that they need to get better at the game. Well, now lower level characters don’t get almost immediate trait buffs to help them. Therefore, they’ll get more practice at getting better.

Additionally, this game is called Guild Wars. A major “point” of the game is to party up with your buddies and run together. But outside of dungeons and occasionally fractals, I don’t see many people do this. But now, if the difficulty levels of mapping and stories and such are harder, then players might actually take a more communal approach to the game.

Tl;DR just have fun playing the game. Don’t turn cash to coin and buy your way to exotic/ascended gear and traits, ignoring the fun of truly earning them all yourself in the process. And by all means, play with other players more.

Ehhh… I think I am going to wait for the actual fix.

Obviously Anet needs a real fix; users can’t be expected to solve everything through workarounds. But in the short-term, for the moment, this fix works. Why protest when you could use the TP?

It’s not entirely forgivable, per say, but honestly I’d rather have a workaround solution now than a real solution in a few more days.

The workaround did work for me. Thank you Anet for the temp fix.

Thanks especially to the team who worked out this solution.

It’s far from ideal, since really the issue should be fixed permanently and not solved through a gimmicky workaround, but at the moment I can buy and sell and that’s good enough for me.

Oh and yes, upgrading to Mavericks helped.

Gem store, trading post, and selling all work. Still get the gamma error, but on macs that’s an incredibly simple fix: command+tab → click GW2 dock icon

A curious question for Anet staff, and maybe I should not have had a few beers at the BBQ I was at, but do you have someone there testing the game on a Mac as if they were an average player? I mean not using your test servers or whatever, but just logging in on a Mac on an outside network and trying to play as if you were one of us. It seems like if someone was doing so they would see that this wasn’t fixed.

The problem with that, I do believe , is that not every mac user is having problems. Lots of us are, but not all of us. My friend is running the exact same system specs as I am, but his TP is working fine. Usually. Still a coin toss, but at least it hasn’t been broken for four days.

Point is, Anet could be doing just that, but lucked out and got a mac with no TP problems.

I’m so sorry to hear that !!!! Can’t you just update your OS to the new one?! It’s Free!!

You can upgrade to Mavericks for free.

Yep, running the download now. I suppose this just gives me the excuse I needed to finally upgrade.

Just wanted to make the note for all users with OSX 10.6.8.
