A Veteran's Leveling Experience

CalamityO.2890

One part that WAS a handy improvement was the weapon skill unlocking. Yeah, for all the spite it received, getting to level 10 and having ALL weapon skills unlocked for ALL weapons at that point… I liked that. No more having to grind through every weapon. So yeah… the haters are wrong here. Sorry guys. This way is better.

^ This. As experienced / vets – weapon skills should be second nature as to what they do (alts should be loving this). This is literally cruise control for the experienced / vet. I really don’t understand why they are heavily against this. It makes less work for the exp / vet players. They should be using it to their advantage.

As another poster stated, the NPE does need some adjustments to make it more palatable for everyone.

I agree with you OP. The system – whilst it has it’s good points, it also has it’s flaws, but with some adjustment. By making the new leveling system more palatable (giving more weapon skills early on), they can make the game as a whole more enjoyable.

The key word Anet is looking for is balance.

LOL they are scaring off the very people they ‘claim’ to be catering towards. What a joke Anet… great job with that update to ‘enhancing’ the new player experience. Your ruining your game for EVERYONE!

Not ‘everyone’ – just the vocal majority on the forums. Heck even ipan (one of the biggest critics of the game on this forum) even said s/he’ll uninstall – but ended up re-installing and saying the new leveling system (1-15) isn’t that bad.

@ Lilith, to see you go is a major blow to the dungeon community. And to the game itself. As one of the biggest supporters of this game and community (along with Vayne). Indicates just how bad it has gotten.

If Vayne throws in the towel, then that should be an indication that the game is going to struggle. For most that are leaving; this game will not be remembered for what it is, but what it became.

Personally I’m going to tough it out with the game. NPE and all.

"Leveling as a Reward" Experience Crippling!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: CalamityO.2890

CalamityO.2890

Yeah, the old system was really perfect pacing in my opinion. It gave you adequate amount of time and experience with each weapon before unlocking each skill. Really disheartening and sickening.

For altoholics (if they are still interested in the game that is) it would have cut their grind time down. At least if they wanted to learn all the weapon skills. From a new players perspective, I can understand what you mean.

"Leveling as a Reward" Experience Crippling!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: CalamityO.2890

CalamityO.2890

Um, what? You can typically unlock the first three skills on your first weapon just by running around the beginning zone to your objectives. By level 2 and following a couple of hearts, you could have at least one weapon fully unlocked, and at least one more halfway unlocked. In 10 minutes of play. Now, it takes 45 to 50 minutes, if you’re grinding hard. This isn’t working smarter.

Have you ACTUALLY tried leveling a new character? Pre-patch, my keyfarmer always had two weapons fully unlocked by the end of the key storyline, after 20 minutes (and we’re talking about a speed run, not going out of my way to kill things). It took an hour to level them to 10 post-patch, as I wasn’t actively trying to participate in every single event that occurred (leaving me underleveled for most of the hearts after level 5…)

Maybe I should rephrase my comment shall I. Try leveling all your weapons skills at one time [pre-patch], and not just two full and a half. Post patch, whilst it is grindy to unlock all the weapons skills. You only need 1 weapon to do it. After that equip which ever weapon(s) and them skills will unlock automatically. Without me having to grind to learn each one. For some one who has leveled a character, I thought you should know what I’m referring to. Or did you just skip and not bother with the rest of the weapons?. After 10 is a whole another issue.

CalamityO.2890

Sigh…

No longer can you unlock your first three weapon skills by killing things in the starting area, to have to level to Lv2 and Lv4, meaning you might as well run past everything straight to the boss.

To be fair, once you’ve reached lvl 10 all weapons skills are unlocked for all weapons. Unlocking each weapon skills individually was way more grindier than under this new system. So I don’t understand where peeps are saying this system is more grindier, than the last one. But yes, this new system has lots of problems. If it was implemented correctly, it would have been a better system.

I’ll leave this phrase for you and the vets:

But the new system… no. I don´t think I would have kept playing.

and playing alts is now very boring.

I agree that the new system has its glaring faults. But you’d have to admit, unlocking all weapons skills all in one shot just by reaching level 10. Saves time from grinding each one individually. The rest is just done in a bizarre or poor way.

“Take the Personal Story. Before the new system, you could do the personal story at any level. Basically, you can do it whenever you wanted. The only restriction being whether you wanted it to be very hard (below recommended level), average difficulty (at recommended level), or very easy (above recommended level).”

Nope, you are scaled to the level of the personal story if you are above recommend level (this coming from someone who completed personal story recently).
_________________________
As for weapon skills. Whilst the system has its glaring faults. To say it’s dumbing down isn’t accurate. I would say it’s more convenient. Having 4 low lvl toons below 10. I can categorically say that weapon skills is less time consuming to do. Reach lvl 10: all 5 weapons skills are unlocked – just by equipping the weapons. Having to equip each weapon separately & levelling was timing consuming to do. A grind in it’s own right. The main issue is from 10 onwards – utility skills and traits in other words. And various other issues like having no access to underwater combat till lvl 8?. No weapon swapping till 7. No access to POI, vistas, skill points, and tp. Whilst the new system has its faults and problems. If implemented correctly, it can be a better system. For now, a very flawed & problematic system.

I dont know really, doing hearts and then few stories didnt even feel bad.I liked actually sometimes just trying to see how fast i could rush first parts without leveling much. It was challenging at the same time and fun.

I might not like new patch and new desings. But I have to say that they really changed the game and i dont feel im playing same game again. This feels more worse than another mmo’s now. Personal story is now reward we should enjoy just because we leveled up. Who cares about the story and what devs wrote for us. Reward means exp and items so lets forget story.

Basically if you were at lvl 80 and then decided to do your personal story, you were down scaled to match the level required as you went through the story, up until the last bit.

to people who have been playing this game awhile and know how combat flows and how to dodgeroll while tabbing between four class skills and coming out exactly where you need to be at the end, this probably does seem frivolous. i have some friends who just came over to GW2 from another MMO, though, and the change in controls was like culture shock. they weren’t unable to do anything, by any means, but i had to coach them through a LOT of stuff, because, as it turns out, there’s a lot to learn when you first get started.

this absolutely will make the game more accessible to new players who want to come over from other titles. hopefully it will drop the learning curve, too. i don’t see how it could be anything but a benefit to have new players in possession of a firmer grasp on what they’re doing.

Whilst we’re at it, it will save the dungeon thread a massive headache from people complaining about how they got kicked for [insert reason].

I shouldnt level up to play my personal story.

You pretty much had to do that initially before the new patch. It even gave a recommended level, to do your personal story at. You had to be level 80 to complete your personal story.

The problem is simple: most did not bother to finish off their personal story. They took it for granted. And now they are screaming about it?. That is very odd.

Yes, doing alts will be a chore to do though.

Why I left GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: CalamityO.2890

CalamityO.2890

The OP has a legitimate grievance. He feels he lost money on something spent in the gemstore. He’s not saying he dislikes the game, he’s saying he dislikes the silence. By the same token, the OP never contacted support (as far as we know) to attempt to get a refund. He depended on a response to a thread. I’m relatively certain he would have gotten a refund had he attempted to get one. After all, functionality had changed.

He would have gotten a better response, if he actually made a separate thread raising his concern to anet. Rather than depending on a single post, a single post – which is buried in a 20 page post. And he expects to Anet to respond to that. When we all know anet can’t respond to every comment or concerns. As you said, support would have been better for him. At least they would have given him a ‘reply’.

CalamityO.2890

Wow, I’m impressed. I think I like the post claiming this is an attempt to get attention are my favorites. Thanks for the attention? LOL

Obviously, yes, it’s as much an attempt to get attention and express my point of view as any comment, question, or statement ever made in any medium since the begging of infinity. Yes, I waited several months for a reply to the complaints. I have a great deal of patience.

Many just don’t see what the issue is, and on the surface I can see why you think it isn’t one. It isn’t about the money. I honestly don’t care if I get a refund or not. It’s more complicated than that.

It’s the silence, and the complete unwillingness to take even the tiniest bit of responsibility that bothers me. I’ve seen it before in other mmos, and all too often it’s a sign of things to come. How can a game be fun if your favorite aspects of it constantly disappear? If the devs aren’t willing to listen to what the players think, if they will do things their way and only their way and ignore anyone that disagrees with them, that’s exactly what happens to a game.

And I only ‘QQed’ about it because the game is worth the bother of lodging a complaint, so that doesn’t happen- and because I WANT to come back. Unfortunately, it bothers me so much that I can’t just enjoy the game until I have some reason to believe they are at least aware of it. It’s the principle of the thing.

And besides, patience is stubborn’s little sister. I have a great deal of that too.

I didn’t ask for an apology or refund, either. My exact word was ‘reply’- I said what I meant, and I meant what I said. I understand that they are busy, and I also understand they may have instructions from the idio- er, their superiors. A simple ‘hi’ would qualify. They can even leave out the letters, if they like.

PS
Just a little something for all you level 80s to think about: To me, end game is… the end of the game. Once I hit max level and do a little end game content, I loose interest in the character. Other people claim that’s when the game starts. Everyone has different play styles. Why criticize someone’s concern because they have a different play style?

Interesting…..

Here’s a tip: don’t stick your main concern / complaint in a 20 plus thread. Where it has little to no chance of it being seen by anet.

There’s principles, and then there is down right attention seeking.

CDI Update- Topic Phase 1

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

CalamityO.2890

Would it be a good idea to put the communities points in a short, clear concise post(s). Something like this:

Key areas:

  • Insert key area needed
a small summary stating why it’s needed.
  • Insert key area 2 needed
a small summary stating why it’s needed.
    ______________________________________

Desired areas:

  • Insert desired area needed
a small summary stating why it’s needed.
  • Insert desired area 2 needed
a small summary stating why it’s needed.

The key areas is where you think it will benefit the game and community as a whole. The desired area is what you like to see be added. Having a wall of text – whilst there is nothing wrong with it. Has a good chance of it being skimmed over. You don’t have to include 2 key & desired areas. Just 1 key & 1 desire should be enough.

The idea is to make Chris and the team read the posts with ease, to see what the player base needs, without having to go through walls of texts – and guessing what will be a good idea. They can then spend more time and resources on the areas that the community have heavily suggested via reading the most frequent key and desired areas.

Just a suggestion as to how it can be approached.

In GW1, characters had the option to save different loadouts to quickly adapt to different places in the game without the hassle of picking out each individual class feature and stat combination.

If you mention anything like “harder content”, you get assaulted by players who equate it with WoW. Guild Wars 1 had harder content that did not introduce a gear grind. Liadri was also an example of it – although it was solo content, not group. But hey, keep those straw-man arguments a-coming! It is simply disgraceful that this MMO has (almost) nothing to offer players in PvE who have learned how to play the game and still seek challenge.

And the problem with Liadri, which did cater to the hardcore / vets / challenge seekers – was the players that couldn’t beat her. They complained on the forum about how hard she was. I didn’t beat her, but I didn’t complain either. Instead I just thought “run an alt that can or will beat her in the future”. Come on, even in LS, LS we’re talking about here!. I do agree with you, that the first season LS was decent. And Scarlet wasn’t a bad villain. But Omai is right, many people on the forums weren’t too happy with Scarlet. They wanted Anet to drop her asap. And they did, even when her actions had major repercussions in LS2 – people were still complaining about Scarlet. Even though she’s dead.

I think GW2, whilst remaining / having links as part of the GW1 lore. It’s trying to be it’s own game. This being – creating its own lore. Look at how much attention the sylvari are getting. And all I’ve read is how “the sylvari are Mary-sue type characters” on the forums. GW2 looks almost (or was) scared of creating it’s own lore, due to it being in GW1 shadow. As you can tell the stark difference between LS1 & LS2.

Whilst I agree with the OP on RNG and table loot being re-worked on rewards in fracs & wurm. I disagree with precursor crafting. Increase the chances of getting a precursor – maybe as a reward for high end content like fracs lvl 50. But precursor crafting….will degrade the value of obtaining a legendary even further. The value of getting a legendary is already devalued enough as is it, when you can just buy it out right off the TP. Not to mention it will really undermine the ones that spent ages making one. I know how that would feel, spent ages just to make one and then “hey presto” craft a precursor. That would really kitten me off – all that hard work and then this.

I wouldn’t even bother engaging the “there’s nothing wrong/LS is good, steady content/there’s plenty to do/you’re just being negative” crowd on the forums. Anyone who WvWs with any regularity knows that the population has decreased dramatically, and that whole guilds are disbanding and leaving. Anyone who’s been around longer than 6 months knows that, prior to the megaserver change, the majority of PvE maps were complete ghost towns outside of a few t1 servers people flocked to for temples and world bosses. And anyone who can read can see the numerous first person accounts of massive teq, dungeon, and RP guilds reluctantly fleeing GW2 on Reddit and elsewhere.

…and then you come to forums where there’s an eager squad of white knights waiting to pounce all over your observations with a knock-down, “nuh uh!” Why even bother?

There’s an equal squad of black knights on this forum waiting to pounce on similar threads. I liked to know exactly where you are getting the impression of hoards of players are leaving. WoW – whilst still being the largest mmo game, aren’t doing so well. It’s well known that the game has lost about half of its player base / subs. In comparison to it’s hay day of having over 12 million players. Will its up coming expansion bring back players? probably. Guilds disbanding?. Plenty of guilds come and go. Most new guilds are disbanding because they aren’t attracting enough members – or various other reasons. Not because they are getting tired of the present content, as you make out. So don’t try to make out as if you speak for all the guilds please.

Whilst this games has it’s fundamental issues, the devs are trying to sort it out now. Some will say “too late”. And to be fair, that is their feelings and if they wish to leave this game, that is their prerogative. If they feel they have done all they can with this game.
