The main problem with this incredibly long and frustrating instance is the way they lock out your friends playing with you when they die. A lot of the frustration with this fight would be eliminated if your entire group could keep playing from the last phase they completed after death. The way it resets is just needlessly pointless.
Not making HoT map completion soloable was a huge mistake. They should have seen this coming and adjusted accordingly.
Trying to get DS map, with population...

I used to play this map for hours when it first came out. Now that it’s mostly dead when I play, I don’t bother with it any longer.
Of course, most of the HoT events and maps are going this direction. Given a few more months…well, good luck doing anything.
This is why I’m not going to do the HoT story on ANY of my alts. It was painful and disappointing the first time. Not going to do it again.
Whenever I’m on, there are so few people playing that there’s no real reason for me to go out to HoT maps. Can’t get anything done, anyway.
Will you pre-order the next expansion? [Poll]

No, absolutely not. After the complete farce that was HoT advertising, I’ll never trust Anet enough to pre-purchase anything again.
Yes, it should be changed. In fact, if the company knew what it was doing, they would have had that changed just before the public announcement was made so that everything matched up. Of course, even if they’d done this properly, it wouldn’t change the far more serious problem of thinking it’s okay to take peoples’ money for something and then never deliver.
MMOers are the only people I know that will blithely pay for unfinished products and products that they will never get.
I am referring to the large number of people who taxi in and zerg around so that they get 100% participation and maximum meta rewards including 4 octo chests for minimum effort. If everyone did this the meta event would fail.
From my experience these days, the meta fails repeatedly for all kinds of reasons. This is only one of them.
New Legendary Weapons (Greatsword/Sword/Scepter specifically) was one of the main reasons i bought Heart of Thorns. I feel betrayed.
There are a LOT of players that feel like now they’ll never get content they specifically purchased and were promised. If you were really wanting the new legendary weapons to work on long term and had bought HoT largely for this, it’s just been confirmed that you wasted your money.
I hope ya’ll bought the cheap $50 set…
TBH, GW2 today is mostly unrecognizable from GW2 at launch. This is not a good thing. The game has serious problems, and thanks to decisions they made with HoT, the problems are only getting worse as the weeks and months go by.
This expansion is falling apart. [Merged]

They really need to fix their false advertising problem. People are never going to get their money’s worth for HoT now if they at all expected to have that legendary weapon content.
Sorry, but canceling content you advertised and then killed AFTER everyone paid for it and now will never get the content they paid for or even a refund is just all kinds of LAME.
I think he made a lot of good points and the future of the game’s next expansions is very worrying. If a person or a company lives in denial about their problems, they generally don’t do well.
HoT WAS a partial expansion, and a small one at that. I’m not paying $50 for another expac like the one we just got.
I can find decently populated maps on the weekends, but that’s about it at this point.
Who hates this game now because of HoT?

Yeah, I don’t play quite as much as I did before HoT. HoT made other games that I used to think were grindy like LOTRO look like games with no grind at all. lol
For me, the grindy systems in HoT have detracted from its appeal. By a lot.
lol Yeah, not sure I’d pay that much gold for it. It may be rare, but it’s just not epic enough to really make people take notice overall, imho.
I’ve seen on countless sites that GW2 in on the top mostp layed MMOs out there, mostly in second or third place.
I also noticed a lot of the controversy caused by the expansion — more related about its content, features, perfomance and price.
I’m on a weak laptop, but I manage to run GW2 with average 25-30 fps in all of Tyria. Sadly my fps are below 10 in HoT, but I manage to play it if I select the lowest graphical setup available.
I don’t really like the new maps. They’re really hard and I feel lost. I prefer to play by myself and when I bring a friend we just rush it. I also have died a lot.
There are way too many threads complaining about GW2: HoT. Many people have left because of the expansion and another handful of players avoid the expansion like the plague. I also heard that the HoT sales were dreadful. Is this true?
Meh, the sales weren’t as high as they wanted, mostly because they didn’t get as many F2Pers buying HoT as they wanted. No surprise there, though. They didn’t say the sales were “dreadful.”
Have players left after HoT? Well, yeah. We don’t know how many. I’ve talked with a fair number of people in the game about this and most of them sited lack of time to play how they want in HoT due to all the timers on the events and fights, so they ended up not playing the new content as much as they thought they would. This is the #1 reason people have given me for why they’re not really playing HoT when we’ve got to talking. The #2 reason is boredom with the mastery system.
From personal experience? HoT maps seem to have become less busy overall as time has gone by, but there’s still folks out there, like on weekends. Numbers don’t seem spectacular for the events overall, but it you don’t mind skipping some hero points, you can still get stuff done.
There seemed to be a lot of people that were disappointed that they’d sprung for the pre-purchase and I don’t think a lot of the people that pre-purchased HoT will do so again. I think a good portion of them are going to take a wait and see approach, which means numbers for a second expansion could very possibly be even more dissatisfying than HoT’s numbers.
And it doesn’t surprise me that their idea of F2Pers buying the expansion didn’t play out as well as they thought it would. When you compare core Tyria’s content for free to HoT’s tiny content for money along with the grindy system, yeah, don’t know why they’d buy it. lol
Basically, I worry about myself. Other people I let worry about themselves and don’t bother with negative emotion over something that’s just not worth it. I really don’t care that much if people are getting or not getting a pixel in a video game.
At the end of the day, ANet’s a business. If the eSports investment really is doing that badly, then they’ll cut it; that they haven’t yet either means they’re seeing growth that justifies continued investment or it’s doing much better than you think it is.
Even people in business have blindspots. Esports may very well be one of these.
It’s looking increasingly like the entire HoT set of maps are becoming “weekend-only” content due to the lack of players out there as time goes by.
And yeah, it’s frustrating.

Thank you for that tale, and that warning.
Someone from ArenaNet ought to read this story, but of course they won’t.
Because it’s not on Reddit…
- Masteries. I like the concept. But I’m new so I don’t have many achiements. The options for Central Tyra mastery points are all gated behind achieves- and ones that generally require grind. OK, that’s fine. Something to work towards. Problem is my XP bar for masteries is now stuck. That is incredibly unmotivating. Poor design, or a middle finger to new players. Either way, poor. This honestly is my biggest gripe with the game.
I’ve been playing this game for 3 years and have quite a few achievements done, so I had a decent leg up on the masteries. But what I have left to do feels like a grind. lol I can’t really imagine having to start as a new player with nothing. Especially when it comes to the Maguuma Masteries.
My average crystalline ore take from 1 DS run is around 12-15 pieces. shrugs So, I get how it can feel like a slog.
I think whether Maguuma feels dead or not usually comes down to a person’s tolerance for the constant taxiing. If I just log into a Maguuma map, it almost always feels dead. If I taxi to a fuller one, then I see people running around and doing events.

I agree that content players had access to before HoT, they should still have access to. New HoT content should be available to HoT purchasers. Not a fan of taking away content in general.
Wouldn’t mind if the prices were lower. DS is starting to get old. lol
Leagues should never have come into the game before some long and extensive balancing was done following such major changes to all the professions.
Seriously, whoever thought having a competition like this RIGHT AFTER a major upheaval to the skills and traits of all the professions, plus the introduction of a completely new profession, was going to be a good idea?
Balancing of so much new content takes time. They should have given themselves that time to properly balance the new specializations and the Revenant before doing leagues. That would have been smart.
Whining about whining isn’t whining.
I think it is. It’s whining just as much as anything else.
Best: Beautiful maps, great music, fun gliding
Worst: Non-soloable HCs, long event chains dependent on time schedules, constant taxiing, map completion items being dependent on group events succeeding.
The best advice on here is to start a new character and begin at the beginning. The game will start to make sense to you and you’ll be able to tell if it’s something you can really enjoy or not.
If you really need a “point” to Verdant Brink, then some of the point of it is to do the events (yes, there are morning and night ones and it does get annoying waiting for the right one to come up), to complete the map items so you get 100% completion in it, to work on your Maguuma masteries, to collect the local map currency and buy things like recipes, etc., and to do the storyline just to name a few reasons for the map.
Mounts have become more and more appealing to me since they’ve really begun skimping on the number of WPs in a given map. Newer maps have way less WPs than original ones did for some odd reason.
It’s gotta be more imaginative than “fun drinker.”
I’ve seen enough people conquer their addictions to know that they absolutely can be conquered.
I just used a hairstyle kit to change my charr’s hairstyle and it changed her eye color.
This is very upsetting because I had previously PAID for a makeover kit in order to get her eye color. Now the money I spent to buy the makeover kit is wasted because her eye color is gone.
So, is there a solution to this?
Having Dailies in HoT would probably make me go there daily. As it stands I’ve not been there in weeks, maybe even a month now. I just find the place too time consuming.
I haven’t been out there for around a week now, either. I’m busy with Christmas activities and events in real life, so I have less gaming time, and I just can’t get anything done in the HoT maps that are dependent on the events because I just don’t have time to waste sitting around waiting for a taxi map or an event to begin or finish.
Maybe later…
You need to learn the difference between challenging and annoying.
This made me chuckle. And as someone already said, challenge is subjective, so no one person’s opinion on the matter is going to be definitive.
But hey, HoT being challenging or not has been argued on this forum ad nauseum. We need some new drama.
However let me state that Rddit wasn’t full of the love and feels I expected after reading how the Devs prefer it there to here. The rude stuff some folks had to say just left me stunned. How sad it was it took 15 people a year to craft it, how the guild leader wasn’t even likely a female IRL.. just a bunch of rude nasty trolls. Like every other online forum can be.
So, it’s basically just like this forum…I figured. lol
So, this map is only full on weekends now? Already? That was fast…
There was already a massive topic about this, but it descended into ridiculous arguments about whether or not anyone should like Star Wars and got locked.
Ah, okay. Well, never mind then. lol
I still think people doing this is lame, though.
Just a heads up for people that still worry about this. I just got a mail from a player that is nothing but Star Wars spoilers.
This is the first time I’ve seen or heard this, so you all might want to be careful about opening your mail. Sorry if this has already been addressed.
Good luck.
I’d love to see the action camera for the Shooting Gallery one made optional or completely removed.
This thread makes me not want to talk about any new movies in map chat now because I might get reported and banned.
Thanks, Gaile.
You’re being deliberately obtuse. This isn’t about casual conversation where someone accidentally lets slip a spoiler for someone else. This is a clear case of griefing that has no point and the player engaging in this should at least get a temporary (1 week or so) suspension.
There was a time GW2 was Casual Friendly
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Curious why are casuals always considered to be people that don’t want any sort of challenge from a game. I always thought casuals were just people that only got to play a certain/specific amount of time for the day/week???? I am confuzzled…..
“Casual” means different things to different people. For some, it means playing only a brief time each day or only a few days a week. For others, it means a more relaxing playstyle that involves a minimum of grind or frustrating gameplay mechanics. For still others, it’s both of these. I’m sure there’s more than this, too. So, it makes it hard to pin down a definition everyone really accepts.
(Spoilers!!!) Trahearne (by a non-hater)

Despite the fact that Trahearne’s constant monologuing came across as annoying, self-absorbed, and arrogant in the PS to me, I appreciated his noble death. He seemed to come across better to me in that moment than he usually does.
Griefers have figured out that the Star Wars thing is a hot button issue and they’ve gone ape trying to get attention with it.
Just tell yourself that karma will bite them in the you-know-where really badly in the future and you will then be vindicated. Have fun imagining all the horrific things that will be sure to happen to them.
Has this been in the last few weeks? Because your right that is about the rate I was getting them as well till of late.
I do map comps to lvl alts to 80, then do cursed shore map comp, PS to lvl60, LS2 #6 (key reward) delete and start again. This is a nice mellow grind for me if I’m not in WvW/pvp for keys and low to mid lvl mats. So I do map comp all the time.
I noticed that in the last few weeks I haven’t gotten a single key from a map comp. In total 15 and 0 and that only since I started to notice and counting, so there might be a few before I didn’t count.
So if anyone is getting about a 30% key drop for map comps in the last few weeks then I’ll just chalk it up to the worst run of RNG I’ve had in awhile. But I’m kind of inclined to agree with the OP that there has been a nerf, intentional or otherwise.
Would be nice if Anet could jump in here and confirm one way or the other.
Yeah, that’s been since HoT, but your 15 maps and no keys seems really low. So, I’m not sure if there’s been an overall nerf and I’ve had good luck or if you’re having really bad luck.
It’s not a great system
Pretty much this. Getting to play this map’s content comes down to taxiing to the right map at the right time and hoping they’re not all full before you click.
You’d think there would have been a better way to handle this meta.
This would be fabulous and might help revive WvW some.
I’ve been getting BL keys about 30% of the time from my map completions.
The rest of the time I get transmutation charges.
