Its a question that requires an accurate description if each weapons strengths and weaknesses. We all know what to do in small scale game play but what about WvW!
SB: Flanking, its so obvious that this weapon has flanking as a huge part of its strength. All of us have seen what happens when speced for it and flank with a SB targets melt. Is flanking a viable tactic in WvW? IF yes we have a winner, if no move on son!
LB is clearly a weapon every ranger needs to have in bag during WvW, but build for it? If talking zerg then sure 30/30 LB+Trap bombs and we have a winner! Abuse zeph and pet swap with AE nukes and traps in middle of zergs!
But OP raises a good point as I also play a GS Guardian Med/Shouts as I change depending on what I am doing and I doubt Ranger will ever be able to play like that! Guardian strength is up close an personal, you never want to stay in melee range of a guardian for long!
Ranger strength? Range?
The most burst I ever got out of my ranger is:
1) Sword when I pop Zeph+Rampage with a DPS pet.
2) SB when speced and I can perma flank with a flame trap on target with Zeph and DPS pet
I run GS/S Horn with a 0|0|30|10|30 build.
I swap to S Horn for bursts when RaO is up as well as supply boons to nearby allies. GS is primary for its huge defensive benefits. Pro Tip sword becomes much more powerful when auto is turned off, you can leap and slash where you please without being locked out of your dodge.
Which utilities and pets do you use? I found that a fire trap goes a long way when using GS+S as they both have combo finishers.
I have never seen a post about the 20 BM double spider amazing control that provides chained 3sec+3sec immobilize and permanent cripple on target when coupled with any weapon that has a cripple like dagger or SB.
Would like to hear what people think, am I over inflating what this pet can do or over weighting its control aspect?
How would you build for GS traits, utilities and pets? Playing with it I found great synergy with Fire Trap as GS has 2 combo finishers and double spider -with traited cripple- for poison field, 6 sec immobilize and 8 sec cripple.
I’d like to see Asura added, they are akin to vermin but why not!
The only Spirit I have seen of use is the elite in tPvP with a roamer or point holder.
Any with PvP experience can comment on how good this signet is alone or when combined with natural healing? Do actually feel it? In PvE I can see and feel it.
I want to give GS+Sword/X a try, what kind of build and pets would you use if it would be offensive minded?

0/0/30/20/20 Healing Spring / Flame Trap / Signet of Renewal / Signet of the Hunt
If you have Natural Healing (BM 30) and use SoW they stack, or is SoW used with builds that stack +healing say 7xx – 9xx?
For trickle damage I think we all agree it is a great utility, what about PvP?
I’d go for full dwayna set, someone told me that signet of the wild procs the 5 second regen from it, not sure though, going to double check this.
Still. Even without that, i think dwayna would be best.
would love to know more about this!
I have never ‘liked’ sword because of the perceived ‘root’ (I know its not a real root per say), last night a Sword dropped during regular game play and I used it without an off hand -had none at the time- and was blown away.
Veteran mob, I jumped in with my Lynx, used Rampage and QZ and the mob melted…Literally it went down so fast I could not believe it so I targeted my pet it had 18 stacks of Might! I had never downed a mob regular or Veteran of same level that fast before…and I had no off hand either!
a build is a build and everyone has thier own
but if you do some number crunching and want to get serious about it and WvW/PvE/sPvP, this is not a build those types of players will pickup
What you are saying is targeted at P/D in general or P/D Crit build?
I use it as a maker and closer. I don’t see any problems with it.
No problem at all, was just wondering if you think it that was the design intent to be able to use it as a closer and maker?
I’ve come across many posts giving subjective answers in line with ‘you need more’ healing for SotW to be worth it -comparative advantages sort of thing- but I never came across a single post that was more objective.
Looks solid. I’d change up the runes a little, at least for sPvP. Keep 2 Strength, but then have 2 Runes of Fire, and 2 Runes of Hoelbrek. The 40% extra might duration is better than the 5% extra damage, IMO (I say for sPvP, because there should be other ways to get extended might duration in the open world.) I’d also switch up the Soldier’s amulet for the Knight’s in sPvP; I’m not a huge fan of the toughness stat in PvP.
You can use your block/Elixir S to defend against burst, and toughness doesn’t do anything against conditions. I’d rather have the higher crit chance, for more devastating burst damage.
-Travail.
Cool, thanks!

Above is your build (OP build).
What about swiftness? You seem to have no way of getting it or is it from runes?
Do you use it more as a gap closer or gap maker? Or do you just turn on auto attack and go with the flow?
At what amount of healing is it ‘worth it’ to use Signet of the Wild?
Edit: My guess was +300.
Muddy Terrain did not hit once lol
But seriously it was fun watching, cool toons.

Thanks for the feedback, here is the adjusted build:
I also get a blank link not sure why sorry :/
Basically its 0/10/30/30/0 With Elixir utilities, Rifle and Might runes with Power stack Sigil. You end up with a truck load of power and any non bunker gets burst down quick while you have loads of Toughness, HP and solid condition removal.
Speedy Shoes is 25% IN COMBAT up 100% of the time regardless of what you do or don’t do. That is massive survival power seeing how easily this build removes condition and mitigates burst.
One last point, the build stacks Might+Retaliation! (Well technically you can’t stack retaliation what I mean is it has high up time for Retaliation)

Fixed.
As you guys know Dec 14th patch buffed the Trait Power Shoes:
Power Shoes: Increased move speed to 25% in combat
Did not see many try to build around that so I wanted to share my high powered Rifle bunker build: (Might stacking)

Feedback? (All forms of the game)
Is it intended that the player can use the chain to double leap AWAY from foe? As long as you do not have a target, you can use the chain as a gap-maker.
Reading the tool tip it indicates the intent is to close the gap, players have figured out that it actually is of greater value when used to open gaps.
Rifle Toughness/Power build! I like 30 in Elixirs and use toolkit.
Quick point about PvE: Even if you have NO WEAPON in the off hand its still viable, that’s how low the bar is set PvE wise. So…..
What happens if you go up against this guy, who wins if neither of you decides to run:
You say Pistol is broken? Go tell Wild Bill that!!
rolling without SoH is just silly, especially if youre relying on kiting. the speed increase is too good, and actually makes the pet viable. my 2c, but good build otherwise.
my suggestions:
lightning reflexes > protect me for survivability
muddy terrain instead of sharpening stone.
id use SoH instead of QZ, but having 6s of quickness is cool for power rangers
I like these suggestions and actually did play with it but was kind of let down with the drop in damage :/ What did work though was what you suggested + Torch offhand for that extra bit of damage.
I still don’t think longbow is good enough to take instead of sword/dagger but its a decent spvp build. Won’t be kill anyone in tournaments with this though no offence.
Not at all I posted to learn from others, assume we get rid of the LB why would the build not kill in tPvP?
Since the game went live we all knew about this build, it has 9xx or more healing and 22xx Toughness with 16k HP, its a bunker that pretty much negates conditions and has average damage from the ranger and high damage from the pet.
the build i posted has marginally less toughness (2100) and healing (850), and but boasts 3k more HP and does huge condition damage.
@nerva
You have the choice of getting the 30 Point Trait in BM which gives you and your pet passive regen and boosts your pet damage instead of a trait that triggers when you take 20% of you HP in damage, why?
The better question: Is it intended that the player can use the chain to double leap AWAY from foe?
We all recognize the offensive side to it, but I have seen players use the chain to get away from melee players by not having a target, turning away and using the rest of the chain.
Since the game went live we all knew about this build, it has 9xx or more healing and 22xx Toughness with 16k HP, its a bunker that pretty much negates conditions and has average damage from the ranger and high damage from the pet.
Sometimes its melee based and other times it may use a Shortbow but almost always has a 1h Sword -so DoT based.
Link doesn’t work for me.
Its the forums, copy and paste the builder I use is the best trait builder on the market today :/
Undead will always go for YOU!
Try this:
Hide behind a wall and send your pet towards the ‘Risen’ and then laugh as it goes for you…How exactly does it know you are behind some wall far away?
One thing you may try is CC after it starts walking towards you. I have found that works, also you can always use heavy CC pets like double spider and so forth which pretty much guarantees perma cripple if traited.
With 5 BM you could always Wolf+F2 then drop traps on him!
P/D Thief’s are not all the same build, some are direct damage like the 30/30 ones, some are Venom / condition. Some have condition removal when stealth and can also heal each time they stealth or/and use Venom.
Once they stealth start counting in your head because they will need to use 1 attack within 3 sec for the burst at which point you dodge. Keep an eye on bleeds, they stack them non stop so look at how much they hot for. Some will tick for +130 and some for much less!
At the end of the day he can just run away!

What are your thoughts on the Minor Trait Exposed Weakness in Deadly Arts which requires 25 points:
Deal 10% more damage if the target has a condition.
Seem it would be a huge boost!
Attack #1 out of stealth
Stealth on CD
Might boon
When you stealth you blind, heal and cleanse conditions -depending on what you choose
I like blind on stealth because it is a 100% guarantee that I will not get hit when I stealth as I re-position myself over the following 3 sec.
What do you think of the above build P/D condition all carrion with +bleed duration.
Ranger damage potential is split between the Ranger and the Pet and you would need to look at traits that increase damage for both.
Feline and Birds are the ‘highest’ DPS pets but have the lowest survivability of all the pets and you would need to invest at least 15 points into BM though going further is recommended.
Another key trait is the protection for you and pet when you dodge, used at the correct moment is vital to keeping your pet up!
Condition or direct damage you have choices!
Its the entire gaming experience but we may not agree since I enjoy the Short-bow animation speed -well the entire gaming experience of that weapon.
I main SB, switch to LB and instantly lose gaming experience due to ‘feeling’ the game slowed down.
Condition build P/D
As long as you avoid long bow you are ok for anything other tower defense.
LB = Longbow, not sure what you all are thinking, I am talking about the animation speed for LB arrows.
I know they got increased by 30% but LB still look and feel far too slow, when I switch to LB I feel as if the game went into slow-motion due to the slow animation.
Can you plz explain/link your build, seems really intersting.
Think hes using Wild Bill build:
