Well OP, you whined and cried enough. BG is open.
On the plus side, JQ and BG guilds are saved! Viva!
Ioj > sor > tc > bg. At least once a year I follow where my guild is.
Oh, basically all servers that were in T1 and guild moved when server fell out of T1?
Time to log into WvW on my BG account and fill up those queues.
Started game at launch on FA. A year later my “hardcore WvW” guild moved to IoJ then BP so I bought another account that was on sale to play with other friends still on FA. Then guild disbanded and I ended up with both accounts on FA, which seemed silly. Decided to use my first account to explore supposed differences between tiers and NA/EU that players related here on this forum. At the time a few friends asked me to level their alts so I ended up playing briefly on both NSP and Mag. Afterwards used it to play with a few different guilds in their GvGs before the scene completely broke up or to play WvW casually with some of the friends I made along the way. Purchased another on-sale account just to keep on an EU server but I barely play it.
First account: FA → IoJ → BP → FA → SoS → TC (T1 tour) → Kodash (EU tour) → BP (T8 tour) → YB → SoS → BG
Second account: FA
Third account: Kodash
So I chose both the migration and the server loyalty paths. They offered two different experiences that helped me retain interest in the game.
I think this thread exemplifies the challenge Anet has with regards to getting guilds that want new members to move to smaller servers.
Guilds are temporary, servers are forever.
Guilds are only temporary if the players let them be temporary… I have guildies who play with me since we started playing World of Warcraft back in 2005.
And servers are forever regardless of whichever hot new game the locust swarm of players feeds upon next.
Case in point? We asked that the top three never be linked – ever.
I didn’t ask for that and I’ve posted on this forum why that’s a terrible idea. Without a link, it means no server is able to be competitive against the old overstacked T1 holdout BG. And we have had two clear cycles now showing what happens when a link is removed from a server that ends up in T1: implosion all the way down to T4 which Anet even had to manually adjust glicko ratings for. Someone in a past thread suggested that the host server should “stand on its own” when it gets to T1, but they forgot that the host server didn’t get to T1 “on its own” in the first place. And this link/de-link meat-grinder effect creates the “tanking for link” incentive.

They’ve been working on a huge WvW overhaul for well over a year. That’s what they said when HoT came out and it’s been a while.
It was delayed a bit but I think they should release it soon.
I just wished they could give us more information about everything that will be included.
Uh, they did tell us sort of. It was battlegroups that could be formed into teams, of which server links is a poorman’s version.
3. Lower the overall populations of WvW Servers :
Anet basically already did this when they implemented the active WvW population calculation change.
I’m going to assume this is directed at Maguuma because I’ve seen our groups do this a lot on the tactivators in SMC.
While I agree it’s a little cheap, I also agree with the others here, kitten tactivators.
Nonsense. My guild has a guy who drove up the price of Feast of Clam Cakes back in Feb-March. Think this is the second or third time I seen someone post about it here.
I’m pretty sure the temporary adjustments were removed when the server links were redone and glicko rating deviation and volatility were reset.
Lets face it wvw now is just who has the bigger zerg.
In 2013, a former guild leader of mine posted on this very forum the very same sentiment in a not-so-diplomatic way. The post was removed for typing in all caps.
My point is WvW in general isn’t just now about who has the bigger zerg. It has always been about who has the bigger zerg.
I really don’t see what this has to do with server pride.
Permanent merging servers will likely create big imbalance as time goes on.
History shows this is true. You and I both recall the meat grinder of several T4-sized servers as they got sucked up into a T3 match against whichever of the four T1.5/T2-sized servers rolled a T3 match while none could roll a T1 match. Permanent merging is a terrible idea.
But it is about being Full. JQ is Full because it has more active population than Very High servers. There’s no reason to give a link to a Full server.
I think this round of links is pretty reasonable. Look at how close all the NA matches are right now.
Population is used for server status. Links are used to better even up matches. This is not whats happening
^This.
I’ve got a lot of friends on JQ and when I look at my friends list during the day I rarely see more than 2 or 3 of them in wvw. But every one of them will hop in at some point, either during prime time or just to get their daily. All of these people are technically active players even if they are only in wvw for about an hour or less everyday.
When I look around on Mag I see the same names logging in every day and putting in way more hours.
Yeah and thats why we’re full, not why we didn’t get a link.
JQ is currently winning the T2 match without a server link. Seems like the T2 match is pretty even.
That’s because it’s the weekend and some of our Sea came on for reset. Today we have some NA playing during EU, etc. Once the work week begins, that coverage and man power goes poof!
Basically what happens to most servers.
But it is about being Full. JQ is Full because it has more active population than Very High servers. There’s no reason to give a link to a Full server.

After manual close now also manual linking, i’m out. Rip
You know… FA’s been Full/Very High since the population calculation change over a year ago and hanging around rank 6. Anet at the time said some servers marked Full were overstacked well beyond the Full status (like BG still is). When JQ was Very High, you guys still brought out numbers that FA could almost compete with. I don’t honestly know how you expect not to go Full when you can outnumber FA at times and then go and recruit. T2 “size” is basically the new max server size you have to get used to, not the old overstacked T1 sizes. It really sounds like you need to trim players in certain timezones if you want to fill other timezones.
Its not about just being full its not getting a link. Anet has just literally destroyed JQ. Well done anet.
This demands justification.

Thanks Seeker! That may be the one.
This comment specifically was helpful to me:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/2tqf66/guild_wars_2_performance_guide_how_to_get_the/co1no7i/
It mentions Shadows being a big FPS hog.
@Mylerian, you can tell when it is a CPU/GPU issue when you’re getting slideshow frame rates. When skills don’t activate, that’s usually server-side lag. The options UI (F11) will display FPS.
There was a thread on reddit discussing the game graphic settings that I’m unable to find right now. It listed which settings were safe to max out without dropping FPS and which not. In addition to setting character models and numbers to low, turn off all reflections and post-processing. IIRC you could have shadows maxed but shaders low. Really don’t remember the rest of the post, sorry.
All GW2 maps have a water “base” and supposedly the game will render reflections for it even if there is no water actually shown.
Take it to reddit! Riot!
Downvoted 3-2-1-out of sight for eternity.
Thats how long a thread would last there. But feel free to try it.

Now everyone knows that you are talking kitten. Bravo.
Time to stem that corruption from within it seems.

Must be what the maintenance is about.
The volatile of this system is suppose to reset after each server relinking. So some mashed up servers can move up and down easier.
Hopefully they do the volatility and deviation reset of Glicko this time when servers are relinked so that new teams aren’t carrying outdated rating data.
New servers for WvW, please?! Less skill lag!? Can you give any details for what this is about?
Hopefully that’s what this is!
So in T1 you either stand on your own as a server, or you get picked off and drop back down again.
As we can see from NA so far, this is a terrible idea. No server is able to compete against Blackgate without having a link and even then it depends upon how populous the link is. Moreover, it isn’t creating revolving servers, but revolving population transfers.
(edited by Chaba.5410)
Given how disorganized the place is, the way they get there (if they do) will be typical YB anarchy.
The problem with tanking is that it is only temporary. Playing only in a matchup that is easier relative to population activity and then quitting in a matchup that is more difficult contributes to that yo-yo effect. Anet’s server linking and population calculation assumes that a server is performing to a norm, not yo-yo-ing.
The problem is that there is no “rotation” in NA. Where did all the SoR players go? Where have all the DB players gone? The only rotation in NA is the players jumping from one dying T1 server to the next bandwagon T2 server. Until recently, JQ was always T1. And for years it’s been BG>TC>FA>Mag, with DB and SoS rising and falling.
There has never been more than a 4 server rotation in NA, unlike the 9 server rotation in EU. Your rotation dream will never happen because of the attitudes of the NA players, who’d rather stack to win instead of trying to win an even numbered fight through skill. This attitude of the NA players has caused server locking to fail, it’s caused server linking to fail and it will cause battlegroups to fail.
What? This made no sense. The tiers aren’t locked. The match up changes frequently. The rankings changes frequently. As we progress, it happens at an greater effect to the point now, where we are seeing NSP in Tier 2 and Yaks Bend in Tier 1 coming from Tier 4. Each time people are forced to move. They are also forced to spread. Every 2 months a reevaluation happens to set this into greater effect.
There is indeed a rotation of servers hoping throughout the tiers. The Tiers are not locked nor should they have ever been locked.
Yeah, YB in a T1 match with zero first place skirmishes and a KDR of 0.5 along with NSP with 6 first place skirmishes and also a KDR of 0.5 must be tons of fun for both of them.
Artificially rotating servers into a matchup that they don’t belong is not going to spread out the population.
Hrm Last week YB came in second in Tier 1 and beat two Tier 1 servers in Tier 2 the week before and KDR doesn’t mean coverage. Try not to focus on 1 week or 1 tier.
YB did not come in “Second” in the last two weeks.
The only reason we did three weeks before was because DK came out of hiding and didn’t tank.
Now we’ve been told to stand down and tank. Tanking hurts players. Tanking is manipulation.
Manipulation of the game, the players and massive abuse of those who will not stand down is in progress – and not one has addressed the blatant 2v1 we see in every Tier and on most servers.
Maybe it’s time for WvW= 1v1 server and forget the third.
Anet, this is why you need to keep NA players in the dark regarding which shards get linked. An expectation has been set that rank 1-3 servers do not get a server link and players will use that knowledge to try to game the system.
Ominous message.
I didn’t vote as I didn’t see this, but I would have voted Yes.
Maybe they wanted YB to still have chances of rolling T2 (#RotateTheDream)
Which YB wouldn’t even need +75 to their published rating on the RNG roll to do….
I don’t know… After seeing NSP rolling a T2 match in FA place like when they had a 150 rating difference feels simply like they are just adding the rating at the time of RNG roll.
That’s possible. That wouldn’t be reflected in published ratings then. But what confuses me about it though is how YB’s “temporary adjustment” was changed to +75. YB’s showing a published rating that puts them as rank 3 server pretty solid in T1 so why would their adjustment need to be reduced then?
I am assuming that the NSP and DB adjustments are being removed, since NSP is now solidly in T3 and DB is now solidly in T4 (last place in the ratings), as ArenaNet intended. Continuing +150 for NSP will put them solidly in T2 (with a chance to get into T1), and continuing -150 for DB will give them a 1455 rating which is just insulting.
I think you may be misunderstanding how the “temporary” adjustment works. “Continuing” doesn’t mean DB will get -150 additional on top of their new rating at the end of the match. The rating changes for servers that have been adjusted “temporarily” don’t exhibit that kind of behavior you are describing. Seems more like a one-time adjustment on a rating on X date that can be removed/changed later with some complex calculations that would affect rating at the end of next match. They do have all the data of the historical matches and can probably re-run predicted rating on past matches without the temporary adjustment.

Time to introduce the Asuran Gundams that went missing a millennia ago in one of the long forgotten lost wars.
It has a Turbo Laser that kills everything.
I just don´t know why BG was the only closed server.
Because BG is a relic of old T1 before the population calculation change and is basically still overstacked. No other server can compete against it without a server link.
I’ve always been partial to charr tanks. Can we get mounted asura lasers on them too?
Look at it this way Now we can be Horrik ???? And unleash the cannons
Ooooo! Mists War Instability incoming! I like how you think!
I think T1 players are too used to overstacked servers and so they don’t have a good handle on the kind of population sizes the new algorithm introduced. Old T1 is a thing of the past. Blackgate is the last remaining anachronism.
The algorithm smooths out activity over time. This means your server can either be stacked in one to two timezones with coverage gaps that can never really be filled or have activity in all timezones but get out-blobbed by these T1 relics who have more pugs sometimes than one can shake a fist at.

Punishing people for playing together is agaibst the philosophy of the game. It would be much more appropriate to put more work into the balancing of large scale combat.
While this is true, there are several instances in PvE, as well as PvP, where having all players doing one thing will end in failure. Playing together also means coordination and working together. Large groups of players who mindlessly follow the tag should not have an advantage over smaller groups who coordinate their movements (tactics) and team comp.
Straight from Sun Tzu … Wu vs Chu when Sun Tzu drew the Chu forces towards Ying
Well, he also said if you greatly outnumber your opponent you should surround them.
BOMB on FA still raids on reset I believe, they’ve been around quite awhile.
They not from the “first few months since launch”.
PRO would be an FA guild that would fit the description. They’re still around but I think may be effectively dead.
I think we shouldn’t be so quick to dismiss the possibility of tanking. If say I were to be a leader of a guild of 50 dedicated wvw players and we’re part of an alliance who agreed not to play for a period of time. That would definitely have an impact on population metrics. I think the population is measured on activity, right or no?
Everyone here posts mostly based on their personal experiences. It is possible those experiences do not include exposure to exactly how well organized some guilds and servers can be so I’m not surprised at the disbelief. Pugs tagging up because no one else is doesn’t mean they’ll be as effective as an organized group. Terms like “push week” and “hibergate” didn’t come out of thin air.
My suggestion was to keep players guessing at whether a server will receive a link not because of whether one believes tanking exists or not, but to remove an avenue by which organized groups will try to affect outcomes.
Plopping objectives down on a hexagon in mirror fashion isn’t design.
You mean like EBG right : most successful map for WvW and by far the best design yet. At the base the map is basically a 3-way symmetrical map like you complain about but this is just the base. Once you decide on the general layout you can start adding all the other stuff around.
Firstly, a third map I would assume is intended to be a borderland map with defense advantages given to the home team.
Secondly, I would not consider EBG is as a simple symmetrical plopping down of objectives. Care was given regarding the distances between objectives so they could be trebbed based on team strength; for example providing red team with certain defensive advantages since red team was intended to always be the weaker server. Red is the only team that can treb SMC from their keep. So EBG is not a symmetrical map really. I guess I don’t see a purpose of posting a “rough draft” of a symmetrical map if the intent was for it to be something more like EBG.
No, that’s what you believe, the tanking.
If you don’t believe those kinds of discussions happen in a serious manner, then I don’t know what to tell you. I think you are confusing the setting of server-wide goals with their ability to execute their plans.
(edited by Chaba.5410)
Anet needs to consider for NA to provide a server link to T1 servers again. The reason I say this is due to the fact that when players know ahead of time that servers ranked 1-3 do not get server links, those players attempt to game the system by tanking to rank 4 so that they get a link and then do well in T1. There’s already been a pattern established by players watching how both YB and then DB lost their server links in T1 and dropped down to T4. And tanking for a link is talked about in the darker corners of the internet.
I don’t want a simple “small map” thing like players are posting. I want well designed maps that pay attention to details such as fighting lanes and spacing between objectives. Plopping objectives down on a hexagon in mirror fashion isn’t design. Fights happen in, around, and between objectives. Those spaces need to be made interesting and tactical.
Alpine works because the design of the fighting lanes. They are open and easy to access and have plenty of room for open field fights. It suffers only from poor design for spaces immediately next to the objectives.
Desert objectives have better objective design (sadly too far away from each other though) but suffers from poor fighting lane design. Lanes are difficult to get to and filled with too much terrain that hinders fights.

I always add reliable scouts to my contacts list. So why would I need to get that information from a guy who spams item links in chat? /block /block /block
Before the team chat change, those same kids were doing the same trolling. Anet didn’t change their behavior. What the change did do was allow us to identify those kids for our block list faster.
Ring of Fire-themed map. Fissure Borderlands.
k.i.s.s.
keep. it. simple. stupid.or else they will over do it like the desert maps.
they should definitively do a poll of like 20 questions beforehand. thats the only way their going to find out what the majority of players want. i, myself, dont even know what i want.
I agree with K.I.S.S. I don’t agree with doing a poll. Desert BL was an attempt to design a map that did things players had posted about on this forum many times. I think it tried too much to cater to the differing voices.
- Guilds wanted open spaces for GvGs that were free of interference from siege fire at objectives. Desert BL unfortunately put those areas in spaces that basically are not fighting lanes.
- Players wanted k-trains to be hindered so supply and upgrade changes were made, walls/barricades were put in direct paths between objectives, defense buffed, waypoint rules were changed. It became a maze. A lot of that thankfully got torn out from the original DBL release.
- Players wanted towers that could not be trebbed from another objective (when a map was delivered that did exactly that, they all discovered how wrong that was).
