More Hairstyles please!

Cinder.4865

I said it during BWE3 and I’ll agree here, Asura definitely need more hairstyle choices. Female Asura have the upper hand in this department, too, in my opinion. While they may have the same number, it just seems like a far better variety. Every male Asura I’ve created has ended up with the slicked-back hairstyle, because everything else looks ridiculous, but not in the silly Asuran way.

Warriors and Rangers were both “left out”, if you want to put it that way. Some fixes are easy, others aren’t, and it’s possible that as they fix some of our bugs they’re encountering others as a result.

Just give them a break, things will be done when they are done, there’s no need to make a sarcastic thread about it.

Well, see, that’s the great thing about lore: it can be whatever the creator wants it to be. If they want to introduce an Asuran-concocted serum that they give to exemplary Skritt to adventure alongside them for whatever reason, by golly, ANet can do that!

Unique Weapon Types

What rationale says that I can’t pick up & use… most of those weapons? Any farm hand from a non-mechanised age will know how to use a scythe (which, frankly, is a rotten weapon, as is a whip) . Why is it only available to Necromancers?

Why can you only use rifle and pistol as an Engineer? Why can’t you use rifles as an Elementalist? Why is it that Guardian isn’t able to use a bow like a Warrior can?

Because the game’s creators have deemed it so, for mechanical and balance reasons.

Given this, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with unique weapons for each class, especially if they fit the theme of the class. I know I wouldn’t mind seeing something similar to this idea implemented.

Is it population decline or a severe disinterest in WvW for your server?

I honestly doubt accusations of population decline at this stage of the game. I’d be looking more at things such as population stabilization, disinterest in certain game modes, and on/off peak hours. Add free server transfers into the mix and people are going to go where the party is, even if that party is on a high or “full” server.

Better to leave us in the dark until the framework is in place or just before implementation, frankly.

And aren’t they subtle?

They’re not making out or humping each other at any point in the story/game, they make mention that they’re with this person, with others being reasonable guesses. Eladus and Dagdar felt subtle to me, it wasn’t like other games where they actually inform you of their sexual orientation, just a “this is my beloved” and you go “oh he’s male okay” and move on. At least, that’s how it was for me.

Edit: I forgot to address the bit about player age ranges, so: the game is rated for teens. If a parent allows their child to play the game, they should be aware of this rating and should be prepared for their child to see something they may not necessarily agree with. If they are offended, they can have their child stop playing the game, but there is no nudity and no sexual acts depicted by the game, so I do not see the problem. If they can handle gratuitous violence, I’m fairly sure they can handle a couple of plant men referring to each other as “beloved”.

If I decide to play a female Asura, I don’t have to worry about what the armour looks like, I know it’s the male’s and that it’ll look good in most instances.

Guilds are meant to be fun. If a guild is having a hissy because you’re representing another guild, do you really want to be a part of that guild? People need to step away from the mindset that a person needs to be a part of a single guild, as per other MMOs, and learn that people want to play with others that their “besties” may not mesh with.

In all seriousness, if a guild can’t handle people being in multiple guilds, that’s on them, but don’t let it affect you.

Cinder.4865

Yeah, maybe I did. So what? It’s a nonsensical distinction to make for sentient woody monocots. They shouldn’t feel things physically the same way any of the fleshy races should. You don’t hear about earth elementals doing it.

Obviously, it was placed for the express purpose of enabling Rule 34, and making the gay love stories familiar to people with no creativity (but lots of argument in them!) Wouldn’t want to alienate those who are all too willing to alienate the rest of the world.

Sylvari are not elementals. However, Sylvari were created using Humans as a template. You can then assume from this that they do feel things in a similar fashion, and that they do have similar bits and pieces — especially given the fact that they cover said bits and pieces. It is, therefore, not as nonsensical as some want to make it out to be.

Fantasy lore is a funny thing, really. You don’t have to like it, but to make an assumption behind its role as you have done is a gigantic misstep.

Add Longer Duration "Stealth" PvE-Only Skill

Having played a Thief, I believe their stealth is in a good position. Now, there have been times where I wished the stealth lasted a second longer, but it hasn’t hurt me. Permanent/long duration stealth is really a slippery slope, and it ends up imbalancing far more than it “fixes”, even if it makes a subset of players much happier.

So, frankly, I’m glad ANet is adverse to this.

Reduce Champion HP by 80%

in Suggestions

Posted by: Cinder.4865

Cinder.4865

If you buff their damage, you simply overkill. right now their damage to a un-protected player (via the buff) while unweakened is roughly over 50% of our hp or so from my experience. if they hit ANY harder, we’d be looking at the kind of damage they do NOW to us unprotected and the enemy unweakened (which is still only 50% chance of a diminished attack) which is either a one shot down state, or 90% or so of our hp if unblocked. if this game becomes NOTHING but blocking and chaining block skills, then we’d all just have to stack 4guardians and maybe a thief etc for weakens.
I really, really don’t think buffing the already meleekittendamage levels of boss auto attacks and poorly telegraphed instagib skills is going to increase “challenge” any more than adding another 200k to their bloated health pools.

If you find them “easy” you’re clearly a ranged centric class user. and used to the kite-wars mentality already. That’s great, But sadly others would like to at some point “swing a sword” without being turned to mush instantly

I’ve only made a single AC story mode attempt, but the ease at which bosses (and mobs in general) were downing melee characters was unbelievable. I was playing a Thief (and dodging when I could actually see any sort of telegraph), and it felt very punishing and disheartening to try melee at all against bosses, especially with the amount of AoE going out. =/

So, +10 to this.

Honestly, the best guess is that they consider their labs their home. You see more private labs in Metrica Province (such as Oola’s), but overall it seems that the Asura operate in Krewes and don’t seem overly concerned with personal privacy — unless they’re working on something secret. Which leads me to believe that a private life for Asura just means anything that happens outside the lab (or even in it in their own time).

Might I suggest not involving yourself in any personal story, then? Stories try to evoke feelings in most cases, and the fact that ANet has managed to do this speaks to their ability to write a story. The fact that the story doesn’t appeal to you, however, only speaks for you. You’ve apparently chosen a new race, that’s great, but now it’s time to move on and leave your disdain for the Sylvari and their (apparently controversial) lore at the door.

Crafting. Does it feel like they forgot about removing grind?

in Suggestions

Posted by: Cinder.4865

Cinder.4865

If you approach GW2’s crafting like any other MMO’s crafting, it’s absolutely grind-y and potentially expensive. You will quickly become frustrated and swear the system is dumb and worse.

However, if you shift your mindset, you will find crafting is a nice, fun diversion with ample rewards. You must make this shift in mindset — and it’s one that I will agree ANet needs to make a little clearer — much like the rest of the game requires a similar shift.

So, grab the items you need and give discovery a good go. I think you’ll find crafting far more rewarding once you do.

Any player chomping at the bit to go back to WoW (and I sincerely doubt it’s half the current population) relishes a different type of gameplay and/or prefers to grind the same content for months on end for that endgame feeling.

And there’s nothing wrong with that. Allow me to repeat: there is nothing wrong with that.

However, ANet has nothing to prove to those players. GW2 is either fun for them or it isn’t, and if it isn’t, minor improvements are not likely to keep them around long term.

This line has singlehandedly won the thread, in my opinion.

You and I both know it has nothing to do with your capability to preach in the game, if you so pleased, but, as others have pointed out, the fact that you can actively see these relationships in the game.

And, frankly, I doubt ANet would ban you for preaching. So long as you aren’t actually spamming the chat or endorsing hate, I do not think ANet has a leg to stand on and ban you with. Granted, it’s their game, they may ban as they please, but I just do not think they would.

Asura Engineer Devices - Graphic Redesign needed?

I believe the implication is that Engineers specifically use that technology, for whatever reasons. After all, there is no empirical “list of technologies by bestness” — although I’m sure every Asura would tell you if there was, they’d be in the first through tenth spots.
In the real world, some people work on bleeding edge technologies, but you’ll find no shortage of people who build and work on old or antiquated technology (vintage cars? ham radios? steampunk trends?), either to improve it, to overcome the challenge of old tech, or simply to enjoy the experience (whether that’s thematic or aesthetic or both).

The thought of there being Asura who collect “vintage” (by their standards) technology and use it is great, I really like the idea of it.

If said cultural armour didn’t switch to your new race’s armour, sure, there would be problems, but I’m sure ANet would plan for that. A lot of other games have factions that switch faction-specific armours and mounts over correctly when you make the change, I don’t see any reason ANet wouldn’t do the same.

You can swap during combat, you cannot equip weapons during combat. And of course one is easier, one is mechanically supported, the other is a simple equip mechanic.

As I’ve already said, it’s a very different thing. You can carry around three extra sets outside the two swappable (in order to be prepared for differing situations), but that doesn’t mean we should have the ability to swap between five different weapon sets, which is the exact sort of logic you’re using to justify a third weapon swap slot.

I think some combo fields and a better spread of combo finishers would help with some of the problems being noted here. Afraid that real life comparisons to a game are often shoddy at best, and completely nonsensical at worst. You don’t need to know how to fight in real life, in any way, to understand tactics and mechanic usage in GW2, mate, and therefore negates any point you may have been trying to make.

I’ll agree with the lackluster comment. For all our variety of weapons, I don’t feel like it really matters, and I generally end up sticking with hammer and sword/sword — these two being the most unique, in my opinion, of all the Warrior’s weapon sets. I understand that Warrior throughout most games ends up being pretty bland thematically, but I’ve struggled with it the most here so far. Asura and armour looks keep me going, though!

And as for auto-pilot, this is exactly how I feel while playing with hammer. I like the hammer, I enjoy the control style of play, but waiting to use cooldowns, either because I need that cooldown specifically for interrupt or because the cooldown is so long (admittedly, for “good” reason), makes me feel like I’m waiting to play, even given GW2’s active gameplay.

Is it actually possible to melee in dungeons?

in Warrior

Posted by: Cinder.4865

Cinder.4865

While I’ve only done one dungeon (and didn’t finish, due to time constraints), I’ve experienced and witnessed the effects of trying to melee a boss — it’s not pretty. The fact that ranged is far superior on most bosses or is even required is a huge design flaw, especially when ANet stressed to us so many times the importance of letting us play the way we wanted. I am absolutely not against requiring some small amount of defensive stats/traits to survive in melee range, but even this doesn’t seem possible.

Add onto this the fact that I was able to solo a champion NPC — and, yes, I know, they aren’t meant to be soloed, that’s not what they’re there for — to half health and would have killed it on my own with rifle had one or two others not shown up, something I absolutely could not do with any combination of melee, and we have a huge problem and flaw in design on our hands.

I don’t have the answers, but something needs done to address the fact that melee play is far more punishing than ranged and far too often a bad choice.
