Class concept is a long range class. Ranged should always be the best option for a ranger, otherwise your no different to a warrior.
this is not true..ranger is not for range -.-
the topic we got about 6 times?and no the longbow should not do more dps than melee weapons
Ranger
Rangers rely on a keen eye, a steady hand, and the power of nature itself. Unparalleled archers, rangers are capable of bringing down foes from a distance with their bows. With traps, nature spirits, and a stable of loyal pets at their command, rangers can adapt to any situation.

Now to explain concept – Which means general idea behind Rangers, It is not melee the general idea is you use a longbow and traps. Its in stone written by GW2 people if anyone argues with that, they are wrong.

What moves punish range players that doesn’t punish melee?
Reflect ranged.
The captain of the Skypirates woman…always teleports to the played furthest away and attempts to one shot them.
Its more difficult to attack multiple mobs with bow and less effective in general for a ranger.

Downstates are hugely unbalanced, some classes have it sweet where as others are easy to finish. Making it the same for all classes would probably be fair, how easy is it to stomp and engineer compared to a mesmer for example.
Why when i am looking for an item on the trade vendor do i have to look through every armor type? Only medium armor effects me so why can’t i filter out all the cloth and heavy? Its the worst search/filer system i have ever seen on any MMO trade and i have played alot
Pros
It makes it faster
It makes it easier to find what your looking for.
Prevents mistakes buying the wrong armor type.
Cons
??
Also when looking for PVP servers…if there is no places left to play I want to filter those games out! Its not a big deal but it just makes things simple…and its not a hard change to make.
Normal filters include
Stat choice – Filter stats in and out
Price range
Type of item – Be it armor medium or heavy
Quality or better – Search rare or better? sometimes handy.
Useable by class?

Very simple as the thread title says, why not have account bound dyes. They are aren’t all that easy to collect once let alone twice, it has no impact on game play and is just nice for new characters.
Downside is the market for dyes would suffer. Personally i could live with that.
Great axe, Flail, Halberd, Crossbow, Ball and chain, (on land) spear.
Just a few things could be added. I would certainly like it even if they just gave a different animation and not a huge gameplay difference.
Oh it should also be said, you wont hit much from long range, unless the target is static because the grenades are so slow you have to predict quite far ahead. You can hit people running in a straight line too with a decent success rate.
They also tend to be very difficult to use up close…in fact the only time they are really accurate is at a medium range :P
its down to personal taste id say. there are those of us (including me) that couldnt live without the target ring. and others turned it of on day 1. imo its easier to aim with the ring, but one click more in an all out click fest.
Fair comment, i have seen both used well…personally i throw all over the place without the targeting rings.
Doesn’t even work on warriors with a certain stability trait…procs it automatically.
All grenade abilities are 1200, so that one is a long range specific weapon.
That sounds like a fun idea, but it seems to go completely against the general theme of mobility that the devs intended in all of the combat design. That, and I really don’t see it as something the class needs. Are you thinking in terms of PvP? I’m not a PvPer so I won’t comment on that aspect of the game at all.
No grenades when speced are 1500 range. Which is the longest range in the game. What you don’t get if you don’t pvp its thakittens very hard to hit anyone with grenades at that sort of range because they travel so slowly..you have to predict like 3 seconds ahead where they will be. Its not easy. Unless you just spamming them into a group ofcourse. They are also the best source of engineer damage along with bombs, if engineer was about mobility we wouldn’t have turrets!
If you want to do the best you can do, best get used to them.

AHMAGERD I know right?!?!?!?! I mean like one day I was like running through a sylvari area and one of the other players like said “this rose has thorns” and there was like no roses anywhere?!?!?!?! I’ve looked and there are no roses in the game?!?!?!?!? Devs don’t even know what a rose is defined as in the english language?!?!?!?!?!?! Worst game ever, -5/10, unsub!!!!!! Amg!
OMG your right! Rifle is a metaphor too!
I think I’m done arguing the point. I’ve also been too tempted to cross into ad hominem territory. Rather than derail, how about refocusing on the one bit worth some discussion. Do Engi’s need a long range option? My personal feeling is no. However, my engi’s only 32 and my opinion might change as I get more experience.
Edit: We have long range skills. I don’t think we need a separate “sniper rifle kit”.
Do you actually know what the long range skills are? Grenade kit. That itself is great in certain situations but you will notice drawbacks when using it. HGH made engineers with grenadier are pretty much your standard WvW build, some would argue the only real viable build.
Thanks for validating my statement.
I find it’s better not to argue with people who are fully capable of providing evidence of their incompetence without my assistance.
Funny coming from a person that can’t actually type sentences that make sense half the time.
My incompetence eh? clearly don’t know what that means either seeing your using it wrongly. Thanks for making an idiot of yourself.
I won’t argue with an idiot you like you anymore, you will drag me down to your idiotic level and beat me with experience.

Warrior for pure burst and direct damage
Engineer for flexibility
Although if you want to use a rifle as a main weapon go for warrior…most of the time engineers end up using grenades or bombs to be more effective.
You either need to learn the concept of fantasy, or your ability to assimilate complex concepts is about at sharp as a soggy biscuit.
If there’s a weapon who’s projectiles are magical rainbow unicorns and you’re paying no mind at all to it being called a shortbow or longbow, yet are insistent upon a purely semantic argument about rifles, perhaps you chose the placement of your soap box poorly…Crazy Town is a block over, you’ll know it by the posters of Twilight and the Jonas Brothers, and the blaring sound track to the High School Musical…I’m certain they’ll hear you out.
Where as this forum has people too dumb to understand the meaning of a word. Just because some people don’t know what a rifle is that doesn’t make it right.
However you bring up thakittens fantasy, fair enough lets go there shall we, you assume in a fantasy game if it says armour it refers to protective clothing and not a spade or perhaps in you world you don’t because you haven’t read anything more complex than Hello Kitty.
“Furthermore, in many works of fiction a rifle refers to any weapon that has a stock and is shouldered before firing, even if the weapon is not rifled or does not fire solid projectiles (e.g. a “laser rifle”)."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rifle
GW2 is a work of fiction. Let it go… =)
That quote isn’t in the link.
World English Dictionary
rifle 1 (?ra?f ? l)
— n
1. a. a firearm having a long barrel with a spirally grooved interior, which imparts to the bullet spinning motion and thus greater accuracy over a longer range
b. ( as modifier ): rifle fire
2. (formerly) a large cannon with a rifled bore
3. one of the grooves in a rifled bore
4. ( plural )
a. a unit of soldiers equipped with rifles
b. ( capital when part of a name ): the Rifle Brigade
— vb
5. to cut or mould spiral grooves inside the barrel of (a gun)
6. to throw or hit (a ball) with great speed
Where i find that? A dictionary if you can find me a single dictionary that states “lazer rifle” as the correct use of the term rifle i will be very interested.
Definition: A rifle is a firearm designed to be fired from the shoulder, which fires a single projectile (bullet) through a barrel which contains spiral grooves in its bore. (The bore is the hole through the middle of the barrel.) Along with shotguns, these are often called “long guns.”

Thieve’s seem OP i think they need a nerf.
Just to add – Grenades are by far the best kit/weapon underwater.
This is a fictional world where magic exists and we don’t have to reload. They can call the weapon whatever they want and they can shoot it however they want.
You want realism? Go play outside.
So the meaning of words in english no longer matters right? That’s the stupidest thing i have ever read on any forum anywhere.
seriously…
…glittery bows…
…that shoot magical rainbow unicorns…
…and you start a thread about realism in projectile weapons HERE!?
…I’m facepalming so hard I can reach the part of my brain that forced me to respond to this thread and choke it to death…
You had a facepalm too many because you seriously need to learn to read.
.
Additional fun fact: There is no such thing as a Rifle. Rifling is the process of putting a grooved etching inside the barrel of a longarm, twisted or otherwise. The spiral grooves were originally designed to make the gun easier to clean. It was a fluke that it also caused bullets to spin, making them fly further and straighter.
I wish more gaming companies understood the terms they blithely toss around. Another game I play calls their Heavy Infantry from the Industrial Period “Howitzers”. WHAT?! Anyway, the more you know.
*woosh*rainbow*
Wrong, there is a such thing as a rifle.
A rifle is a firearm designed to be fired from the shoulder, with a barrel that has a helical groove or pattern of grooves (“rifling”) cut into the barrel walls.
Rifling and a rifle are not one and the same.
Please give us a DeathMatch Mode soon. I want to win off my ability to fight as opposed to my ability to sneak onto a point or use secondary objectives to win.
Then the game becomes zerg vs zerg is that really more skilled? I am not sure.
hehehe those were a good watch but the first was from ages ago and the 2nd was from nearly 8 months ago, lots changed since then don’t ya think, honestly if any warriors like that ran at me id probably kill them before they got there kill shot off, and as for spvp, its a very different place then wvw, also im not sure this post is about showing off what other classes can do better then the engi.
I said you won’t blow anyone away with a rifle on engineer… so i am talking burst damage. I get linked a guy running around doing 1-2k crits and 600-700 hits in WvW. That’s not good burst its pathetic.
Not to mention that after being shot in the face you won’t die, you will simply loose few ta da health points. It is very realistic. But once again, not always more realistic means more fun.
Its not supposed to be a realistic. That doesn’t mean calling a sword a mace is right anymore than a blunderbuss is a rifle.
I hate when people call things something they aren’t. You wouldn’t call a pitchfork a spade would you? Or a knife a fork? So why are all engineer firearms larger than pistols called rifles. The fact is they aren’t rifles at all, its wrong and misleading.
A blunderbuss is not a rifle
A musket is not a rifle
A shotgun is not a rifle
The difference is rather large for anyone who actually knows how these weapons actually work. The rifle is a weapon accurate at long range for a start and above are not. I won’t go into technical differences but they are quite different weapons…as different as a mace and a sword.
The abilities you use for a rifle actually suit a shotgun/blunderbuss or even musket, they do not suit a rifle. The difference being the former mentioned are short range weapons and the rifle is long range. Scatter shot for example is suitable for shotguns/blunderbuss but not for a rifle!
Its not a big deal but you have to admit it makes you think about the people who actually designed engineers. Its seems a very silly mistake to make.
Ideally i would love to have the choice of shotgun/blunderbuss or rifle for longer range, however unlikely to happen. I know someone will bring up real life but if i wanted to slate engineers from a realism point of view i would be here a while.
Crafting would be considered more useful if it wasn’t a huge money drain for little return.
Quip – legendary pistol

That surely isn’t real. The noise alone would make you want to vendor it!
Always be loyal to your crew!
Warriors have very little condition removal. This isn’t even an issue and warriors have had immunity to damage from direct users since release and it again is fine.
Whats with the pets? Birds? and stuff. Anyway thief didn’t seem to know how to deal with the turrets.
Grenades aren’t effective in 1v1 if some people do make them work they have either a lot of skill or the other player is terrible! Its not the answer but its something to think about when choosing kits.
Alchemy is pretty awesome and going HGH with a power build is always a good choice, if you really prefer condition damage however i don’t really see the need for 50% crit.
Just so you know, rifle is never good damage. Its useful in any power build but don’t expect to be blowing anyone away with it.
its pritty possible to blow people away with a rifle

Thats a WVW one.

The engineer is more trait-dependent than most classes, so they feel especially weak at low levels. I really noticed this on mine.
For the Grenade Kit specifically, note that the Grenadier grandmaster trait in the explosives line gives a 25% range increase and a 50% damage increase (ie: throwing 3 at a time instead of 2) to grenades. The difference between having that and not is just night and day. Until you can get that trait at level 60, the Grenade Kit will be rather lackluster.
For stuff that’s more effective at low levels, you might want to check out the Tools or Firearms trait lines instead, as they have more stuff that packs a punch at the Adept and Master level and will probably help you more now. The Tool Kit is a really good weapon for general play and can compliment pistol or rifle skills nicely.
Well i would disagree with toolkit being good. If they are in close use bombs, in my opinion they are way more effective, take multiple targets and condition and effect them. You can take on crazy amounts of mobs with skill using a bomb kit. I personally avoid toolkit most of the time save the shield and prybar, engineers just aren’t made for toe to toe melee in my opinion.
Just so you know, rifle is never good damage. Its useful in any power build but don’t expect to be blowing anyone away with it.
Remember the turrets AI is not supposed to be high. Its not got some advanced CPU inside telling it what to target. I would expect it to shoot the first thing that comes along until its dead.
Vs a mesmer they will always be pretty poor. It would be silly if they were never attacking the clones seeing it would remove a lot of the mesmer defence.
They are difficult to balance to be honest. They are static which locks the engineer into a position once he has dropped them and with pvp as dynamic as it is this presents a real problem.
Up until about a week ago when they put that aetherblade armor skin set on the gem shop there wasn’t a single set of medium armor skins in the entire game that actually looked engineer-themed. (Hell, there aren’t even many that look ranger-themed. Whoever designed the medium armor skins seems to have assumed they’d all be worn by thieves.)
I like the backpacks because they are the only thing my character wears that actually makes me look like an engineer.
Who ever designs the medium armor needs sacked.
There’s not one plain leather chest piece.
There’s no lack of amazing armor designs for leather armor out there.
The design team were very lazy for medium armor.
Engi with a over-charged rail-gun ftw. Long-range energy beam artillery to replace mortar
or just buff the mortar
Delete mortar, we don’t need another ranged AOE. Grenades work fine.
Just for those who don’t know there is a discussion that Anet are following on nerfing AOE abilties that are doing too much damage compared to single target ones.
No prob. Some classes have a ton of AOE, while others don’t have as much. So we’re not just going to do a blanket nerf to all AOE – that’s not fair to all classes. We’ll go on a class by class, weapon by weapon basis.
And as I’ve said, we may need to tone something down in one area of the game, but it may be totally fine in another area.
For some weapon sets, the AOE options may be too strong compared to the single target options, which is what we aim to address.
Single target should out damage AOE effects its only logical.
My view on engineer is that it is a class that likes to use things not as they were meant to be used (like real engineers) in the way of adding a variety of utility and special abilities and do not use a weapon as that weapon - if that makes sense. Example: pistols in the hands of an engineer become mini flame throwers (blowtorch) and immobilisers (glue shot), wrenches become effective melee weapons, grenades become superb condition appliers, etc.
If you give the engineer a rifle that can only be used as a rifle then they are not a true engineer, just another man with a gun. The utility and control that an Engineer brings to a fight and contained within all its weapon sets is what makes it such a great class. I feel A-net actually got the engineer class right in relation to abilities.
I don’t consider the concept of an engineer is “He is too stupid to bring proper weapons so uses tools”.
Firstly i did not roll engineer to melee, so while i like to use things like toolkit and flamer i think they put you in the path of a hurricane when dealing with a warrior or thief and i prefer to at least weaken my opponent before mixing it in melee…as most of them out damage or last us in close quarters.
I like rifle as it stands to a certain extent, it has some nice CC and close range skills but i feel that engineers lack some sort of long range single target. I find grenades a spam at times and would love just to use some long range shooting instead.
So what i was thinking is separate the Shotgun/blunderbuss style from proper rifle skills. Rifle should be ranged based and about precision shooting and not AOE and melee defence.
Idea is long range rifle for single target damage.
Hes probably think of the old static discharge build
Heroic sacrifice got boring quickly they went to the well one too many times on that one.
There is no character building, they made a great character in Tybalt for example. They build him up a little then kill him off. Killing him is fine but lets look at how many characters are in the actual plot of any significance, there’s Treesus Trahaern and your character. Who else of any real importance? apart from the dragon. The others are just flashes and gone or die.
When writing any decent story you want to have characters die you must have a decent amount. It also helps if you know them for a while before they do die…adds to the shock factor.
30/30/30/30/30 Engineer
Self replicating, Fully automatic turrets with armor piercing incendiary rounds.
Top play doesn’t mean they have no bias or that they are clever.
lol just ran some spvp, tried it with heavy defence + turrets…. lets just say a mesmer phantom insta popped my turrets while swinging just randomly by them … hit me also for 3,5k ..a PHANTOM…
I wanted to laught, but then the thief kicked his 5k heartbannaa twice into me. Glad I took 2k toughness lol
Would have been funnier if he killed you with thieves guild ability, then you would have been killed by npcs!
Luckily we got 1 extra stunbreaker on the Elixirgun so a lot of people tend to forgive Anet, for the fact we “lost” 2 stunbreakers by putting them on abilities where they just dont work or make sense.
That’s only luck if you use Elixir gun! Although thinking about it….might fix that into my build and use for other heal and acid bomb.
Turrets just seem like second rate, non moving phantasms to me. If you want to spawn something to fight for you, your best with a mesmer. Just my opinion
They arent purely cosmetic they help enemies identify what kit you are using in PVP so they can adapt. The should no more be removed than people should be able to change mesmer effects green or guardian effects red.
I didn’t notice where this changed our attacks. Its purely cosmetic and if you can only tell because of the backpack then it is a disadvantage to an engineer. Mesmer don’t wear a banner that says “MESMER” on it, neither do Ranger, Warrior or guardian…you can still tell who they are, look at the buffs if you can’t tell at a glance.
Well i am no expert but i would say it doesn’t do great damage and the skills are pretty close range. Unless your nearly in melee range all you really have is auto attack which isn’t even that great.
